I tried to make a selection, my absolute favourites have a heart next to them ❤️, but my les mis fics bookmarks have 17 pages, so you know, there are still other amazing fics that i didn't include (part 2 maybe?). I also realised while making this list that most of these fics are actually very well known, but still, they're great 🤷‍♀️ I'm an angst enthusiast, be warned.

He opens the door because he feels good enough to take the trash out, and everything’s alright, even the odor coming from the plastic bag, until he hears it.

It’s a cry, a wail, desperate and heartbreaking as if something tiny is trying to cause its lungs to explode and is on its way to success. Grantaire looks around, not willing to accept what he feels coming, before lowering his eyes on the floor. In this moment, Grantaire swears, he's so fucking wasted. * Enjolras leaves to work abroad for a year. When he returns, he finds out that there has been a new addition to their group.

- trigger warnings bc it's not on ao3 so doesn't have tags: murder, gun and knife violence, bombs, conversations about the deaths of children. this is not healthy relationship fluff but it makes for a 🥵 dynamic that's for damn sure.

This is one of those "could be it's own novel" fics.

yes it's the top fic yes everyone probably knows it but it's good for a reason. THE fake dating high school au fic that I broke all my rules for back in 2015. I refused to read unfinished fics, let alone T rated high school fics, yet I remember waiting for the updates for this one as it came out, messaging mutuals on the day the last chapter was released. and every time I reread I remember why. Brilliantly written, the pining, the angst, the miscommunications. All the Joly and Bossuet scenes.

honourable mention to the scene where Joly is so excited for the battle of the bands, then next scene starts with "I think it's more of a sitting night today" the realest simple yet most gut punching illustration of chronic pain that gets my ass every time.

i’ve really been wanting to get into merthur after watching it for so many years!! do u have any fic recs?

Yes! Yes I do! I deeply regret not using the bookmark button on AO3 before, like, last year, but I guess this means you get the ones that have really lingered in my brainpan.

I adore the Merlin fandom. It was the first fandom I posted fic on AO3 for! The fic can be (extremely roughly) bisected into two - the canon era (fantasy medieval!) and the modern AUs (some with magic, some without) with a tiny sprinkling of reincarnation fic yoking the two together.

“And if I wanted to bring him round to Keeley’s… the main house?” Figuring out what to call what is a complete fucking mess, and if Roy had his way they would’ve just bought an entirely new house and started from scratch, but it’s important to hold up the illusion of things until either Jamie retires or the world suddenly gets very cool about polyamory.

This is gorgeous. I sometimes skip feminization stuff, but this was just the right amount for me. Roy calls Jamie “princess” and it’s sort of the catalyst for the OT3 (but mainly Roy and Jamie) working through some gender-light stuff. (I’m doing a bad job of describing it). Ends on a lovely Greek vacation for all of them.  I loved the bit with always-cold Jamie and him not wanting Roy to “baby” him at practice by asking him to wear a coat. 20k.

This is SO GOOD. 11k. I’m assuming this is one of the OG OT3 fics out there. Written for Yuletide in 2021. Keeley kind of sends Jamie to Marbella to keep Roy company. The author really nails the characterizations, it’s incredible. Two of my favorite quotes that I pulled:

Listen, if there’s some well-written Consensual Non-Consent out there, I’m gonna find it and rec it. This one is particularly delightful because the nature of it is kind of theatrical and jokey, as they’re playing parts in a sort of historical scene (the only way Roy was comfortable doing it).  Jamie gets what he wants, they all have fun, there are plenty of check-ins and lots of aftercare and everyone is happy. 4k.

Keeley can't believe she's the only one willing to commit to the concept here. After all the negotiating and discussing and research and Roy's PowerPoint presentation, the two men she is, for some reason, in love with can't be bothered to dress for the theme?

There’s also a part where he’s telling Roy random facts and he tells him one about Roy as a young player, and it’s precious. I love Jamie’s characterization here, he’s such a happy sunshine boy!

Jamie’s bike falters, a bit, the front wheel swerving in the mud. He gets it back under control and raises his eyebrows in Roy’s direction. “Fucking gorgeous, am I?”

OH BOY!!!!

Okay so first of all here are some authors whose Les Mis fic I just wholeheartedly adore: idiopathicsmile, standalone, tothewillofthepeople, samyazaz, lady_ragnell, lyres, merelydovely, and sovin. I'm sure I'm missing a couple, but listen, basically everything these writers have written is amazing.

And then you have the Les Mis fic I wish I'd written that I still regularly think about, by @fahye, dance this silence down (the emergency room remix), which as it says is a remix/accompaniment to another fic which is also excellent, but I read the remix first. And like...ugh, the perfect depression and passion of the first chapter followed by the entirety of the rest...it's so good. It's SO good. Like yeah sure, pining, but what if mind-blowing sex and a time gap and then awful, awful pining. It's delicious.

Also, I read my own fic back a lot. I'm really proud of a lot of it! And it's true what they say - if you write for yourself, you'll never be dissatisfied.

My absolute favourite merthur childhood friends fic of all times. You really see them growing up together, experiencing life together, living it all together. Shots of their meetings and just being the beautiful duo they are. Gah and the writing here!!!! Superb. Go check it rn

2. Let Us Dare by kianspo [E] [29K]

This one is a really good one. Uther dies instead of Ygraine, which is our wish come true basically. Arthur and Merlin grow up in Camelot together, and Balinor is Ygraine’s advisor so magic isn't banned. Shenanigans happen, and honestly it's just so fun and cool to read. Also it features Good!Morgana, so that's always a pro to me in fics. Aaand, Merlin goes for a while so we get to see pining Arthur in flesh and bones. Iconic.

3. Made of Dreams and Bones by lady_ragnell. [T] [7K]

This one is quite different from your idea, but just as precious. Arthur is disinherited and goes to live in Ealdor. Hunith and Merlin take care of him, and then he just belongs there with them. Until it's time. Maann this one is very well written and just great to the core. You definitely have to give it a try.

4. A Mother's Love by ReneeLaRoux. [T] [4K]

This one is modern AU, but is canonic as daylight and my heart triple beats from its beauty every time I remember it. It's Arthur - Hunith centric and so beautifully written you ache how Arthur never had this. Ahhhhhhhh my poor little boy, you are so loved by this fandom.

5. That Which Makes It Whole by LittleGreenGirlxx. [E] [81K] [WIP]

I think this is the exact closest fic to what you're looking for, with Hunith being in the castle as a servant and them growing up together in Camelot. I remember just a few things about this one, but it was soooo good, so here's a promo for a WIP because these deserve our reccing and recognition too!! And if the author ever decides to continue it, (as a writer, show them that you're interested in the fic and it could really help!) I'll definitely continue reading it.

what if I got on my hands and knees and begged someone to write a fic where merlin and Arthur grow up together, merlins mother a servant in the castle and arthur still the prince. We see the young (7-10ish?) prince either stumble upon a small merlin being teased by nobles kids where he protects him or he finds merlin doing smth strange like collecting rocks but decides to tease him (read: follow him and try become his friend) and from there on out their relationship grows????
