It wasn’t till I came to the states that I knew what everyone thought it meant to be a boy or a girl.” Apollo shifts his body straight, staring ahead of him at the basketball court, “My first foster family had basically forced me to present and act feminine, I thought they were all like that, so I did it. Honestly, I can’t say if it made life easier or harder.” Apollo leans back on the swing, eyes focusing on the stars, “I thought it was normal, to hate yourself, to feel like you were born in the wrong body.” His knuckles turn white as he tightens his grip on the meta, “To hear girl and daughter and want to stab your ears out so you wouldn’t have to hear it anymore. To see the boys get what you wanted but were told you weren’t allowed.” Apollo sighed.

Decided to continue my (second) replay of Apollo Justice (I'm still on Turnabout Trump) and I'm being hit by how much Kristoph is treating Apollo like an attack dog. Like I fucking hate it but it's also really interesting that only after Phoenix testifies about Kristoph's presence at the Borscht Bowl Club does Kris start manipulating Apollo (because yes, that's what he's doing; I wouldn't quite say he's gaslighting him but he's definitely having a Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss moment).

Like for context this is what had me like "holy shit, Kristoph's just using Apollo as an attack dog" (dunno why I didn't get hit in the face with "Apollo is just Kristoph's attack dog here" the first two times I played AJ:AA tbh):

And he states it like it's a fact. He's doing this to confuse Apollo, who's been conflicted the entire trial about whether his loyalty should stay with Kristoph or with Phoenix, from both a personal and a legal perspective (as he's torn between loyalty to his mentor and loyalty not just to someone he looks up to, but also to his client). Kris is using that to his advantage; he knows Apollo trusts him, and he's taking advantage of it and using it to manipulate Apollo (to be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if Phoenix is also using this conflicting loyalty and the fact that Apollo looks up to him to his advantage, but he's not manipulating Apollo to do so, or at least he doesn't until the forged ace comes into play).

He ONLY does this once Apollo starts questioning the authority he doesn't have in this case. He's been calm the entire trial but here he starts losing his cool and it's made obvious through his dialogue. Apollo starts questioning whose side he should be on, Kristoph's or Phoenix's, and Kristoph starts manipulating him and putting him in a position where he's going to start doubting Phoenix.

It genuinely makes me think Apollo's just another pawn to him. If any part of Apollo's apprenticeship (internship?) with Kristoph was genuine, it was because Kristoph wanted Apollo to become a great defense attorney for selfish reasons; if Kristoph had to tie up loose ends, he'd have a skilled defense attorney who's already incredibly loyal to him, making him easy to manipulate (and had Phoenix not been the defendant of this case but all other details were the same, I doubt Kris would've been caught because part of Apollo's loyalty conflict in Turnabout Trump comes from Phoenix helping him figure out the details of the case even before Kristoph is accused of Shadi Smith's murder). It makes me wonder what Apollo's time working under Kristoph was like; how manipulative was Kristoph, and what did he do to ensure Apollo's loyalty?

It's a good thing Kris got arrested for Zak's murder too; if he hadn't been, I doubt Apollo would still be around, given Kristoph's tendency to murder literally anyone who wronged him unless it's more beneficial to keep them around.

Anyway, Kristoph's attitude shift after Apollo goes against how Kris wants the trial to be done is not talked about enough. He IS manipulating Apollo during Turnabout Trump (and while it was subtle, he does it throughout the entire trial because he's a paranoid bitch).

I could go further into how this parallels Phoenix's actions in Apollo Justice (because Phoenix ALSO uses Apollo as a pawn, as well as Klavier and Ema in Turnabout Succession) but this is long enough and I REALLY want to finish Turnabout Trump lol

baker and baker’s wife - diego and mia : okay so. love cut off very tragically. and for lanamia purposes because lana is cinderella’s (miles’) prince. mia is very determined and she dies in the process of reaching the goal because she became distracted, like the baker’s wife.

jack - phoenix : jack is very attached to things, and so is phoenix. he would be trying to get milky white back like his life depended on it. also made him jack so that diego could say “its because of you theres a giant in our midst and my wife is dead!” because he blamed phoenix for mia’s death 🙏🙏 i <3 angst. oh and also he can be friends with red :)

just…dont ask me who his mother is. i dont know.

little red - maya : shes young and just like little red, is kind of sheltered and has some terrible shit happen to her that leads to a revelation about the real world. shes on a search for her mother, or in this case, granny. i know it makes more since for red to be mia as she was looking for misty and the truth and died along the way, but shes already the bakers wife and it can apply somewhat to maya as well.

cinderella - edgeworth : okay so this one is kind of silly. hes like the von karma black sheep and i think franziska being a stepsister is hilarious. i dont think they would have as bad of a relationship and cinderella and lucinda do in the actual show, but the rivalry is still there. he also is the type to run away from hard things because…we have JFA to thank for that.

also gregory can be the ghost

the witch - kristoph : he doesnt have any relation to mia or diego, but him and klavier work pretty well as the witch and rapunzel. i dont know why klavier is related to diego in this. lets just say kristoph did some weird ass wizarding shit that made himself and klavier look very similar. i dont know. the witch is a very complex character but i dont want kristoph to be as sympathetic as she was. he is very interesting but less “right” than the witch was. in her words, “i’m not bad, im not good, i’m just right!” kristoph…isnt really right.

he also loves petty revenge and would do the whole monologue.

princes - lana and ema : siblings, for one thing. lana and mia could have a moments in the woods type of thing going on. mia has a bisexual awakening. lana also works with edgeworth, but in this version i dont think shes very in love with him. its more about asserting her authority as royalty. edgeworth isnt in love either, just as cinderella is unsure of her decisions. ema is the same way. she cannot stand klavier.

the line in agony where rapunzel’s prince says, “you know nothing of madness till you're climbing her hair…all the while hearing her ‘aahhhh’” i feel like that could be recontextualized from “im madly in love” to “oh my goodness this bitch wont stop singing”. the princes, or princesses, are much more reluctant about their counterparts in this au.

steward - angel starr : okay so the steward(ess) isnt an important character but . maybe idk (im insane) him and cinderella’s prince had some kind of relationship. i mean….he gets around. and lana does too—its insane.

and im pushing the starrskye agenda (cinderella’s prince x steward?? 🤨🤨)

rapunzel - klavier : rapunzel is reminiscent of 17-year old klavier. i feel as if that controlling relationship rapunzel and the witch has is almost like his and kristoph’s. kristoph is keeping klavier close to him because hes afraid if he sees the world he’ll know that what kristoph is doing isn’t right. kristoph is great, and he’ll always be nice, until klavier wants to leave. everything will be fine, as long as klavier depends on his for the rest of his life.

also they both have ridiculous names, and they both sing i guess??

lucinda and step-mother - franziska and manfred von karma : another thing i thought was funny. it just makes sense (somewhat) in the context of this au. its important to note theres only one stepsister now, and i know theres an older VK daughter but im too lazy to cook up a design.

mr. wolf - redd white of bluecorp : hes dangerous and lurking. he killed mia, sure, but he also framed maya and therefore put her in danger. hes definitely got that predator animal vibe to him, but hes also just as charismatic as the wolf. he also had a major hand in the disappearance of misty.

granny - misty fey : a victim of the wolf. a victim of redd white.

WHEW that was long. wow. okay so i hope this was good!! there is not an into the woods fandom and i will personally make that happen if i have to. great musical!!!

Merry Christmas, little Beans

Today we received a Big Box from Japan. It contained 6 months or so of official Ace Attorney merchandise purchases, plus one doujin.

First there was the AA 456 Orchestral pin selection. Displayed here are all of the pins that I'm definitely or maybe keeping. There are 10 in total.

The next picture shows Apollo and Trucy can badges from the October 2024 Japanese Capcom Café (magicians), Phoenix and Miles wooden badges from the Capcom Pixel All-Stars Wood Badge collection (this link is super cute), and a tiny pin showing Apollo and Trucy throwing fish around.

Actually, it is a normal-sized pin, but it has such a detailed picture that it seems tiny. These pins were produced for a collaboration between Capcom and a rail company, and each one shows a location that you can get to by train. There are four Ace Attorney pins in total.

Apollo and Trucy Trading-card style acrylic stands from the October 2024 Japanese Capcom Café. I haven't decided yet whether I'm keeping both can badges or both acrylic stands. I don't normally do acrylic stands because I entirely lack horizontal surfaces in my home (they're all covered in Stuff), but I really like the full illustrations.

Klavier acrylic keyring from FANTHFUL, same design as the metal pin that I already have, but I really love the 3D effect from the layered acrylic.

Also Klavier and Apollo bookmark/keyrings from the online Capcom Store on Parco. The bookmark part is embossed fake leather, the keyring is small enough to be of actual practical use! (In comparison to all the giant keyrings which are more for hanging off bags than having keys attached.)

Finally, this picture shows an A4-sized "clearfile" (plastic binder) with the design from the Japanese-only physical release of the AA456 Odoroki Selection, and a doujin by my favourite Klapollo author, glucose. This one seems to be sweet rather than sexy, featuring such scenes as Apollo buying ice cream for Klavier because he has a sore throat and fever.

I had a random thought, only five AA games are actually the story of their protagonist. Those being Justice For All, Dual Destinies, Spirit of Justice, and TGAA1. (AAI2 is in a weird place but I’ll explain that at the end so spoilers for that game as well)

Like, I know each protagonist is important to the story, but it’s still not their story.

The original Ace attorney is all about the consequences of DL6 (Red White and Mia’s death, Miles and Von Karma) and Miles’ redemption. Phoenix is just the catalyst for it all to start unraveling.

Then Trials and Tribulations was the story of the Feys and how Misty’s disappearance and the inter-family politics destroyed the lives of so many. It’s also Diego’s story to a lesser extent, of him learning to grieve and let go of his anger. Again, Phoenix is just the one being dragged into this mess due to his connection with Mia and Maya. (I would argue that dealing with your evil ex is definitely your story, but that part is so completely overshadowed by the family drama that it is a side plot.)

Apollo Justice was the story of the Grammaryes and the Gavin brothers and how one family destroyed itself while Klavier realized just how fucked up his brother is and the part he had to play in Kristoph’s schemes. Not to mention Phoenix and his disbarment and him learning to trust Apollo, going from practically taking over the defense from him in case 1 to trusting him with winning the Misham case in case 4.

AAI1 is the story of Kay Faraday and the legacy of the Yatagarasu. Miles is there because he happened to be the one with the necessary information and ability to solve the case when it became an international incident, but he does not go through any character development during that time.

TGAA2 is the story of the Professor killings, and Kazuma and Van Zeiks’ families, the misdeeds of Lord Stronghart and the the tangled web of lies that was woven in order to protect the corrupt system. Ryunosuke went through his character development of growing into a proper lawyer in the first game so he’s free to be the catalyst here.

AAI2 is weird however, it is Miles’ story, of learning what it truly means to follow his father’s legacy and learning that he can do that in his own way as a prosecutor. But it is equally the story of Simeon and his misguided revenge, and how authority and the system can so completely fail a person that it drives them to extreme measures. AAI2 is two stories borne of the same tragedy.
