my heart is breathing for this moment in time by usedtothebeach (E, 160K) Probably my absolute favorite time travel fic. I’ve read it more times than I’d like to admit, and every time I love it more. One of the things I like most is how organically the author weaves in canon events…every little moment is an easter egg without it being so obvious that it pulls you out of the fic. Anyway, this one is so moving and so absorbing, I hope you like it if you give it a try! There’s an 18K companion piece to it as well, but you’ll see the link at the appropriate time when you’re reading the main fic.

your quietest voice by flimsy (E, 8K) Beautiful writing (like, just savor the sentences…they’re so pretty) and a really unique concept for time travel.

as we move slowly by snk (GA, 3K) A canon fic tinged in magic and truly gorgeous, poetic writing.

feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream by togetherwecouldbealright (M, 123K) I read this one so, so long ago that all I remember is that I loved it, that there’s some really romantic and sweet moments, and that my notes from way back when only say, “OMG this one is so good! And I’ve barely gotten to the smut!” HAHAHAHA! (Link is to a download)

every universe but ours by @28finelines (E, 50K) This fic isso touching and funny and sexy and I read it all in one go! Please go read it because it’s like reading multiple Larry fics in one, each one with that “I would find you in any lifetime” vibe.

Soul of the Sea by vurdoc (E, 33K) A gothic romance set in a small Scottish village. Mysterious, melancholy, tender, and such a pleasure to read.

The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep by @helloamhere (WIP, 4 part series, mixed ratings, 128K) Amazing world building, complex characters, beautiful writing.

Black With Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This writer is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good.

i was at an all night diner by @yoursongonmyheart (6K, NR). This is more of a prose poem, and i really enjoyed the way the author built such an intimate portrait of the 5 boys in so few words. It’s beautiful and dreamy and I think about it still.

I Won't Let You Forget by graceling_in_a_suit / @graceling-in-a-suit (T, 7K) I love the writing in this one. It’s one of those fics that has that kind of melancholic, dreamy feel to it that I really enjoy. Plus, it has a “no matter what, I would find you in any lifetime” vibe. So good.

Take Care Down By The Water by shyserious (M, 37K) Oh my goodness I loved this fic. Magical realism, mythical creatures, dreamy/moody atmosphere, beautiful writing. The link is to a download.

The Haunting of Louis Tomlinson by @helloamhere (T, 31K) Like everything else this author shares with us, this is so well paced and so well written and just charming. Great dialogue, great zouis friendship, and this one also has one of my favorite tags ever: Harry is a complete drama queen and also A GHOST

Loyal Knight And True by rainbowninja167 / (E, 52K) Really original story, mystery and magic, great characterizations. All around a very good read!

the bearded stranger by juliusschmidt (E, 2K) This is a wild twist on strangers to lovers and it’s fun and funny and really kind of hot.

You Take Me Over, You’re The Magic In My Veins by supernope (E, 36K) I read this years ago and my notes are not terribly helpful: “medieval princes. Pining forever! Sexy though.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I like this author, in general, so if that sounds good, give it a whirl!

Yours, Truly - hkafterdark - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 12k, T – Regency AU, epistolary. Epistolaries are not normally my thing, but I'll try a lot for a new (to me) Lilo and – wow. Yep, it works. The author did a great job and I literally laughed out loud more than once!

I used the word 'delightful' in my comment and it is that but so much more besides. And I've never seen The Office, so don't worry about not knowing the show.

Waiting For Someone Who Needs Me - graceling_in_a_suit - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 17k, T – genie!Harry, band AU. So inventive! I loved this one. The lamp.

Bet On It - popfly - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 23k, E – How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days AU. It's years since I saw the film so this was practically all new to me, and I could totally imagine Louis hamming it up wailing about Harry letting their love fern die. Because he would.

Big Sky - graceling_in_a_suit - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 30k, M – space AU, hybrids, vive le revolution. I'm not a particular fan of space stories and even so I completely loved it. Such a fantastic portrayal of competent, spiky Louis.

In Your Black Heart (Is Where You'll Find Me) - graceling_in_a_suit - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 36k, E – pirate AU, omega/omega, bamf!Louis for lack of a better term, which is my favourite Louis dynamic, let's be honest. It was WONDERFUL.

Love Is a Winning Game - Rearviewdreamer - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @all-these-larrythings – 47k, M – exes to lovers, game shows, fake relationship. Full on loved this. The game show scenes were a hoot, but it also had real heart and the added dimension of exes to lovers? Wonderful.

Glitter in the sky, glitter in our eyes - softfonds - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @softfonds – 59k, E – omegaverse, historical AU, courtesan Harry/Duke Louis. You know when you just... don't know what to say? This fic. The pining! Great.

The Last Something That Meant Anything - jaded25 - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – M, 95k – band break up (written 2014), emotional hurt/comfort. The angst is so good. The Louis whump is off the charts (which I love) but then also everything is so well developed from then on, no easy fixes or short-cuts.

A Taste of Desire - casuallyhl - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @casuallyhl – 104k, E – 19th century AU, cotton mills, omegaverse. SocialJustice!Louis! This one really stuck in my head. I was constantly thinking about it, and I still am two weeks later. It's also so immersive, I feel like I actually learned a lot about cotton mills. I appreciate that from a fic :D

You Try To Be Everything (I Need) by lululawrence - @lululawrence​  (NR, 36k)

Wars, and rumours of wars, were nothing new for the world in the twenty-fourth century. The fighting had evolved over the years, and rarely did it involve traditional weapons. A group most widely known as the Southern Powers gained strength amongst portions of the western European continent and spread quickly. There was a fight the Southern Powers didn’t expect coming from the north of England, though. Resistance came in the form of an organised underground; a group comprised of people with the Touch that did the best they could to enforce a line that would not be crossed. Slowly, that line was moved from the Channel to boundaries further and further north. It seemed only a matter of time before the Southern Powers took over everywhere. Until that time, people did the best they could to live their lives in some semblance of normality. For Louis Tomlinson, that sense of normality was about to change when his best friend, Harry Styles, goes missing. Louis embarks on the journey of a lifetime where he uses his newly developed abilities to search for his friend, even when it takes him to places he never thought he would see while surmounting trials he never could have imagined. -

I loved the way the magic and technology in this fic intersected in such a unique way and the way the world was built was extraordinary!

red hands by reveries_passions - @dystopianharry​ (T, 132k)

I’ve never told anyone,” Harry murmurs, voice so soft no one else would be able to hear, if it wasn’t just the two of them. “But you’ve told someone,” Louis says firmly. “And that’s not gonna fucking happen around here. You don’t speak a word of it, or someone’s going to kill you, and we can’t let that happen.” * a dystopian au in which harry, an ex-soldier who’s escaped from his government run camp, accidentally stumbles across the biggest rebel movement in the country, and louis, one of the rebellion’s mysterious leaders who appears to hate him, seems to simultaneously have an obsession with keeping him alive. or: harry is wanted for treason, niall hasn’t changed in four years, liam is always smiling, and louis is angry. like, really angry.

- The plot of this is just *chef’s kiss* in so many ways!  I love the way the characters interact with each other and I’m weak for Niall and Harry’s friendship in this.

Love After the End of the World by writing_practice - @mercurial-madhouse​ (E 158k)

“Wait. Just so I’m clear in me fucking noggin,” Niall says. “An international worldwide takeover is well under way and the only thing standing between having hot showers and a second end of the world is us five fuckers?”    -----    Society shattered when all electricity suddenly cut off across the globe, plunging the world into darkness. Now, Prometheus Industries is the sole remaining supply of power, a saving grace to those who survived Lights Out. As fugitives in no-man’s land struggling to break into Prometheus HQ, death lurks around every corner for Louis and Zayn. Things get complicated when a routine recon falls apart and Louis collides with Harry and his mates Niall and Liam, survivors with their own agenda.    When staying alive is already a constant battle, the deadliest weakness is to be in love. For Harry and Louis, finding each other sits on top of the endless list of What Else Could Go Wrong.

This just came out in the most recent Big Bang (that’s still on going so you should definitely check that out) and this fic is so amazing!  I think it does a great job of just really immersing you in the world the characters exist in.  Love After the End of the World is also a Soulmate AU and I love the way those parts come together.  It also has an amazing prologue called PROMETHEUS RISING (M 5k) that I enjoyed immensely set in the same world!

at last, at last by suspendrs - @suspendrs​ (NR 41k) Locked

“Come with us,” Tommo says, stopping at the other end of the gymnasium, near the doors. “Don’t let them make you suffer any longer. Come with us, and be human.”

   Before Harry has even finished thinking it through, he’s on his feet, gaining the attention of every single person in the gymnasium. What has he got to lose, anyway?

   Or, Harry is born into a cult in a post-apocalyptic world, and Louis is the leader of the rebel group tasked with the mission of shutting them down. Together, they make a rather effective team.

This fic does a great job of making you feel like you’re experiencing with the characters, like I could practically smell what the characters were smelling!  The world it’s set in is so cool and the entire fic feels so well thought out and everything is so consistent!

my love will never leave you by we_are_the_same @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed​ (T 10k)

In a world where memories are used as currency, Louis will do anything it takes for Harry to get better.

I loved the idea behind this. Like the entire world is so brilliantly done! And it was all based on ONE word (because of the wordplay challenge).  Even though it’s set in a different world everything feels so grounded and realistic and I really really like that about it.

a prayer for which no words exist by Eliane (M 34k) Locked

"Louis is a few seconds away from blowing up a rather important section of the New York subway when he sees Harry for the first time."

In this fic the characters motivations are so clear (to the reader) and I love how it goes from Louis accidentally sort of, kind of, kidnapping Harry to them becoming friends then more.  I also love how no matter where they are the fic has a real sense of place. This is part 1 of landscapes of war.  The entire series is really good!

Who Painted the Moon Black by throughthedark (E 95k) Locked

   “People died,” Harry whispers so quietly Louis strains to hear. “People died, and I killed some of them. How does life just go on after something like that?”

   Louis shakes his head. “I don't know. It just does.”

   Hunger Games AU where Louis Tomlinson is district six's victor from the 69th Hunger Games and Harry Styles is district seven's victor from the 72nd Hunger Games.

This fic is a hunger games AU that both people who have and haven't read/watched the Hunger Games can enjoy. I like how it explores the world of the Hunger Games in a way that isn’t explored in the Hunger Games canon.  It’s really intense (like the E is for the darker themes and violence) and I enjoy it a lot.  There is a happy ending (as the author assures in the tags) and I really enjoy all the struggles that the characters go through.

Nobody Marks You by graceling_in_a_suit @graceling-in-a-suit​ (T 33k)

“The plan is: we’re gonna put on a play. Now, I see some doubtful faces–” Louis looked around and found zero doubtful faces. Liam looked intrigued, Zayn looked bored, and Harry looked scarily blank. “But this is what’s happening. We’re gonna do some fucking acting, we’re gonna perform our hearts out, and we’re not going to think about anything else. The past, the future; none of it. All we’re going to think about is... “ Niall trailed off, eyeing the bookshelf to his left. He closed his eyes and reached a hand out towards it, running his fingers over the covers before pulling a book out at random. “William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.”

AU: Five assholes stuck in a bunker put on a play.

This is one of my absolute favorite fics.  I just love the way the characters interact and they way the story is told.  It’s nonlinear so you jump around in time and it shows the way the character's relationships change throughout.  I’m a sucker for Much Ado About Nothing and though you don’t need to read it to fully appreciate the fic I think the use of the play throughout is genius.

Dystopian AU. Louis has been alone for too long to remember how not to be, and Harry has too much to worry about to deal with a scrawny, wild, stranger.

Louis shakes his head, his body twitching.

“Fine.” Large green eyes survey him before letting go. “It’s cold. Take this. Wear it.”

Louis can’t help another flinch as the man’s long scarf is wrapped around his tender neck, it’s still warm. He touches the soft material. “Thank you.”

The man bears his teeth. “Don’t thank me. Don’t ever thank me.”

The thing this fic does really does is showing emotional reactions.  Louis’ inner monologue is so well done and I really like the plot of the story.

they live in a world where they can only say four words per day. harry meets some people that don't want to live that way.

I really, really, really, like this plot and the story! The world that the characters exist in is so interesting and I just love the way in which it is a dystopia.

Hi, sweetheart. You know, I have rec lists with HL being trans/gender fluid/bisexual, etc. But I don't think I have any ones where they're demi.

This is the only one I've read where one is demisexual, but I really enjoyed it.

Tiptoe Through Our Shiny City by graceling_in_a_suit (T, 8K) This one is quirky and charming, with great banter and a fun premise. It’s also one of the only fics I’ve read where Harry is demisexual. I really enjoyed this one.

Night Shift by banaanipoika (E, 9K) This was incredibly sexy and beautifully written. I loved that there was such a unique setting with so much descriptive language making me feel like I could smell and feel everything in that hospital room.

Devil in my brain, whispering my name by @lunarheslwt (E, 9K) I thought this author struck a great balance between the dirtiness of a demon defiling an angel and the way the angel gave in to his desire to be defiled. Super sexy.

pull you closer (kiss me harder) by sunshineandthemoonlight (E, 6K) This was absolutely beautiful — just the perfect amount of tension and wistfulness to make me tear up. But then it was sexy and full of hope at the end. I loved how Louis supported Harry and gave him exactly what he needed (and really, H gave Louis what he needed, too).

Allegro/Adagio by coffinofachimera (E, 9K) everything I’ve read from this author has been so beautifully written, and this is no exception. Yes, it’s filthy, but they give such depth to the characters’ reasons for the way they “play”. And this is one of the rare fics that really take us through the build up to the scene, straight through to aftercare. I really loved this one.

your quietest voice by flimsy (E, 8K) Beautiful writing (like, just savor the sentences…they’re so pretty) and a really unique concept for time travel.

no one's gonna know by jishler / @snowjosh (E, 9K) This author always does such a wonderful job of writing an established relationship fic where there’s so much warmth and expression between the characters, while also showing how much lust and passion there is. This is chock full of edging, exhibitionism, and dom/sub dynamics and it’s such a good read.

Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover by @lovingstheantidote (E, 7K) This was sensual, erotic, and beautifully written. The author took a restaurant visit and a flirty first meeting, and turned it into something mouthwateringly sexy.

boy with kaleidoscope eyes by docklands (E, 8K) This was just lovely. There was so much tender sweetness in the way they treated each other and I loved that even though it was just in Louis’ POV, we still got a very clear picture of how Harry felt. Honestly Louis in this fic is just sweetest thing ever. Harry should marry that boy.

Twist the Knife by jishler / @snowjosh (E, 6K) This fic packed such a punch in so few words (I’m beginning to realize that this author excels at that). It’s raw, sexy, and so emotional; I was left both totally fulfilled, and wanting more.

I just loved the dynamic between the two of them—you really get a sense of the difference between them when they play and how they interact when they’re not. Also, just really hot. Did I say that already? Yeah.

something wicked this way comes by cosycryptid / @liamloveslarry (E, 7K) weird, unique, and delightfully quirky. I’ve read a bunch from this author and they can all be described that way, all well as having sparse, crisp writing. This one has a Twin Peaks vibe, and a very concerned Louis trying his best to protect Harry.

The bed and the carpet by orphan_account (E, 8K) So, this was written a while ago, and because of that there are some things which... irk me (like the use of “orbs”). But it’s really gentle and sweet and sexy. Thanks to the anon who told me they cried reading it. I did, too.

Diamonds and Pearls by superglass (NR, 7K) Absolutely gorgeous writing. Tender, delicate, dreamy. Set in NY in the 1980s, so read the tags. I just really loved this one and look forward to reading more of this author’s writing.

Everything You Do by jishler / @snowjosh (E, 7K) This is my favorite of a 3-part collection (all of which are good), and wow. The author explores gender struggles in way that is incredibly tender and emotional, while still writing a super sexy fic. Loved this one.

horizontal like a quarter to three by orphan_account (E, 9K) I always love fics that do kink discovery well, and this one is a favorite. Gentle, loving Louis realizing he wants to get rough with his sweet boyfriend? Gimme that.

gets me overwhelmed by crybaby (E, 7K) Read the tags on this one because it has a number of things in it that some may not enjoy, but if it passes your test it’s a super smutty good read.

sweet baby, our sex has meaning by publunchesownmyass (E, 8K) This author manages to make this fic romantic and filthy and super sexy all at once. Plus, Harry in that lace dress and you’ve got a winner.

mon petit, little one by publunchesownmyass (E, 6K) Yes, you guessed it. Harry wears that fluffy sweater from the Tiny Desk performance in a much less innocent moment. I characterizations, banter, and situation felt really authentic and this fic is super sexy.

Love you in the dark by Perzikje (E, 10K) This is such a tender and moving portrait of these characters. This author does a great job at capturing Harry’s struggle with the shame he feels (yes, I cried), and then beautifully portrays the balm of the way Louis loves him.

til you get what you want by eleadore (E, 5K) This is one of my favorite authors, so if you enjoy this one, please check out their others. This one is is such a fun combo of smut and banter.

Fine Line by bananaheathen (T, 5K) Have I mentioned I love this author? The dialogue and banter in this is top notch. Just a delightful fic that feels perfect at 5K, and at the same time I wish there was 100K more.

little black dress (it's all right) by istajmaal (E, 8K) I think this might have been one of the very first genderfluid Harry fics I read; this author was ahead of their time way back in 2013. It’s so sexy and incredibly gentle and tender and I just love the way they write.

I Think I’m Addicted To Your Light by supernope (E, 9K) Light hearted, sexy office romance fic. I wish my company parties were this much fun. 👀

an island without waves by tofiveohfive (NR, 5K) This is one of my favorite authors for exes to lovers fics. They really do a terrific job of getting right in there with the painful self-realizations and struggle. This one is no exception. Plus, it references one of my favorite films and has one of my favorite tropes: a love confession in a rain storm.

The Way You Smile Golden by PearlyDewdrops (M, 6K) Beautifully written slice of life where I just felt everything this author described––from the stuffy bar to the freezing beach to the confusing emotions both characters had. It’s just lovely.

So much stays unknown till the time comes by becka (E, 5K) Another old one by another author I really like. A short time travel fic that is both sad and sexy. It’s got a bit of an open ending, but you still get the sense everything is going to work out. It’s just a touching little fic (read tags, there’s some internalized homophobia in this one).

blood bank by starseas (E, 9K) I think I was on a roll with old fics by authors I like, because this is another one. This author just writes beautifully and this fic is wonderfully dreamy, poetic, and sexy.

hot, sticky sweet by Awriterwrites (E, 6K) This one holds a place in my heart because it’s the first fic I drew art for, and it began a beautiful friendship. But ALSO, this fic is fun and crazy sexy and involves Harry in short shorts and roller skates.

Cancel your reservations, no more hesitations by 14hrflight (E, 10K) I think this might have been the first alpha/alpha ABO I ever read and it’s really a good one—gender identity, body dysmorphia, but also so much comfort and understanding and sexiness.

violence of my own touch by orphan_account (E, 5K) I just found this fic today, actually, and was so moved by the way this author portrayed both Harry and Louis — the exhaustion, the confusion, the sadness, but also the deep love and need for each other.

Forever, Uninterrupted by sparkk (E, 9K) Written in Harry’s POV, this one is sexy and emotional, with great dirty talk and some serious jealousy on Harry’s part. I really enjoyed this one a lot.

a virgin to that money by eversincewefellapart (E, 7K) Broke univeristy students who don’t really like each other agree to make a sex tape for money. What could go wrong? This one is sharp, funny, and sexy.

Have a Nice Trip by @kingsofeverything (E, 6K) I didn’t know I needed horny Harry tripping on ‘shrooms, but I definitely did! This is really funny and sweet. Definitely a quarantine pick me up

Strip That Down by lovelarry10 / @chloehl10 (E, 8K) I particularly liked the way this one worked in the pain kink and body worship in a different way than I’ve seen it done before. Sexy, fun read.

baby, i’m speeding, and red lights are run by benzos (E, 7K) this author has such a gritty, realistic way of writing. I really enjoyed all the little details that made you feel as though you could get inside and understand the characters. Plus, super hot smut.

however do you want me, however do you need me by moonshinelouis (E, 7K) I just love a bit of baby boyfriends and kink exploration. This one does it so well.

Gentle Sin by userkant (E, 8K) I love when people write about kink discovery and kink exploration. This one was sweet and sexy and I loved their dynamics.

But When We Kiss… by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 8K) At last this author has graced us with another fic and it’s a filthy, fantastic Sugar Baby Harry fic. Hallelujah! But seriously, their writing is so good, the dynamics are so hot, and Harry is just the perfect kind of desperate in this one. Go read it!

When The Wolves Come Out by rosemarianthyme (2-part series, E, 7K) This is the first time I’ve seen anyone write ABO as kink exploration and I loved it. I loved how open and supportive Louis is in this series and how much that allows both of them to explore and connect. The second part of the series is actually a prequel, FYI.

give me forever for a while by mercutionotromeo (E, 5K) This one involves a collar, but in a slightly different way – this time it’s kitten play. I always love the way this author writes their smut and this one is full of dirty talk and soft dom Louis using Harry.

Twist the Knife by jishler / @snowjosh (E, 6K) This fic packed such a punch in so few words (I’m beginning to realize that this author excels at that). It’s raw, sexy, and so emotional; I was left both totally fulfilled, and wanting more.

Keep Me Closer by zanni_scaramouche / @zanniscaramouche (T, 18K) This so tender and thoughtful and just... delicate. I wish I'd stopped to copy down some of the beautiful prose, but I didn't want to stop reading! The author smoothly wove in their backstories and I loved how viscerally they described the character’s physical reactions to each other. It’s just a beautiful piece of writing.

Making My Way Downtown by @disgruntledkittenface (M, 2K) this was such a cute fic... I loved the image this author created of Harry. He was dorky and sweet and crazy about Louis (my phone corrected “dorky” to “dirty” and somehow that fits perfectly since this is a story about wanking) 😆

Hi sweetheart. I actually don't. I have two fics where one of them is Demisexual, but nothing where they're Ace. I have one fic where there's an Ace character and there's some good discussion of different sexualities, but he's not a main character. Shake Me Down by AGreatPerhaps12 (NR, 209K) this fic will run you through the wringer, but it’s really a great read. I really like the way the author took the boys from enemies to friends to boyfriends, and how we got to see how protective and supportive Louis became towards Harry. Plus both of them go through a really well-developed character arc. (Ace side character)

Hi love. I know there are some Hades/Persephone ones out there I haven’t read yet, but here’s what I can suggest:

Say Hallelujah, Say Goodnight by alivingfire (E, 110K) This is an epic Angel and Demon fic that I still think about from time to time. It’s action packed throughout, heartbreaking at points, and full of beautifully written passages. A wild ride from start to finish.

Collision by itjustkindahappened (NR, 225K) This fic is really unique and interesting. The characterizations are a bit OOC (in my opinion), but it’s such a cool story, that this didn’t get in my way of enjoying it. The author has written an epilogue since I read it, which might expand the ending, which felt a little abrupt at the time.

Because I only had these two, I asked @cuethetommo for her suggestions as well:

Hi darling. Ok... let’s see what I can suggest. I honestly have so many so I would suggest that you also look through my Exes to Lovers fic rec, as there will be a lot there that fits this idea, too. 

I won’t let you forget by graceling_in_a_suit / @graceling-in-a-suit (T, 7K) I love the writing in this one. It’s one of those fics that has that kind of melancholic, dreamy feel to it that I really enjoy. Plus, it has a “no matter what, I would find you in any lifetime” vibe. So good. 

It’s Been So Long by @elsi-bee (T, 31K) This fic was really charming. I always love Louis and Gemma as friends, and the “in love with my best friend’s brother” trope rarely lets me down. This one was sweet and endearing while also being very moving. I loved the tender way they treated each other, even when they were pining, and the flashbacks were the perfect way to fill in the blanks.

want it all the time, need it every day by swallowsmateforlife (E, 6K) I read this one way back in 2015, so I don’t recall a lot of details except that it was sweet and sexy. May be time for a re-read!

Mine Would Be You by @crinkle-eyed-boo​ (E, 115K) Beautifully written, flawed characters and an emotionally engaging and ANGSTY plot. Super hot smut that made me cry like a fool. Banter, OT5 friendship, and the grittiness of New York as a backdrop. Loved this one.

we can only look behind by @hereforlou​ (M, 66K) Absolutely gorgeous writing. Childhood friends to lovers fic that made me cry multiple times (Yes, I was a mess). This one had such realistic expression of emotions and such three-dimensional characterizations. Just loved it. (Link is to a download)

For As Long As I Can Remember (It's Been December) by green_feelings / @greenfeelings​ (E, 128K) This author always delivers on the angst, so yes…I cried. I loved the sense of the inevitable with these two characters — as in real life, they’re just meant to be. But first they’ll go through hell.

Such a good read. And even though the tags said there was a happy ending (which there is), I still cried buckets.

all my love was down in a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations, and there’s something so touching about it.

Can I lay by your side? by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun​ (E, 60K) There are a few of this author’s fics that I’ve read multiple times. This is one of them. It’s just sexy and soft and a little heartbreaking. But a happy ending, of course!

no pressure, no diamonds by karamelised (E, 43K) This fic is SO good -- really fun, original story, great characterizations, crazy hot smut...plus, there’s a prequel and a sequel so….what are you waiting for?

The Dead of July by whimsicule (M, 117K) Even if you know nothing about MCU, this fic is a must read. Lots of angst, great writing, and what feels like very well-handled depiction of PTSD and everything else that comes along with kidnapping, torture, and amnesia. Good times. But there’s a happy ending and a 110K second part (with more angst and mental health struggles) that I haven’t read yet, but I’ve heard good reviews of!

Empty Skies by green_feelings / @greenfeelings (E, 134K) I just started re-reading this the other day and it holds up so well. This author is always a pleasure to read and their fics are so well-plotted and the characters are nicely fleshed out. I loved Perrie as Harry’s bestie, the bitterness and angst is PAINFUL, and the ending feels well-earned.

once bitten and twice shy by @pinkcords (M, 19K) First of all, for a first fic in this fandom, I thought this author really did a nice job with their characterizations. I especially liked the way they captured Harry’s anger and humiliation and stubbornness. There’s a beefy epilogue as well which I haven’t had a chance to read!

taking tips and getting stoned by alison (M, 24K) Slightly OOC, but I really enjoyed the realistic approach to the storyline and having a fic about life not turning out the way you thought it might, and the opportunity for second chances.

deleted your number (so i can't call you) by tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix​ I think this author does such a great job with writing realistically about breakups and the emotions that are involved. Things aren’t just suddenly solved -- there’s still anger and hurt and a realization that better communication is needed. It’s just very refreshing to read. And of course, I cried.

don’t tell the gods (we left a mess) by @bottomlinsons (E, 72K) This is a different take on the fake relationship trope, which makes it particularly fun. Plus, this author really knows how to write snappy dialogue and good build up to the reveal. Link is to a download.

Howls Like A Beast (You Flower, You Feast) by @indiaalphawhiskey​ (E, 17K) This author’s writing is poetic without being too precious, descriptive in a way that paints a gorgeous portrait without piling on unimportant detail, and their smut is sexy af. I love all of their fics, but this is a personal favorite because it combines so many things I love (supernatural elements, Versailles, Larry, and smut…what more could you want? LOL).

Black with Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This writer is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good.

like a timebomb ticking by @infinitelymint (E, 32K) Read the tags on this one because it was written prior to the personal tragedies that have happened IRL to Louis. But if you can handle that, this is a really well written exes to lovers fic with a whole lot of angst and hurt/comfort.

The Second Hand Unwinds by kingsofeverything (FullOnLarrie) / @kingsofeverything​ (E, 52K) Also known as “the NASA fic”. This one has such a unique and well thought-out storyline. Add in time travel, exes to lovers, ot5, and excellent pacing….you’ve got yourself a great fic!

Some Clear Jellyfish Don't Sting by gloria_andrews / @gloriaandrews​ (E, 32K) This one is a such a beautiful portrayal of summer love with some pining thrown in to make the resolution that much sweeter. And yes, it made me teary.

What Am I Gonna Say When I See You by runaway_train / @runaway-train-works​ (E, 7K) This one is just sweet and lovely and such a pleasure to read. I love the way they reunite and stray apart and reunite and make it right. Good stuff.

The End Should Be A Good One by bananasandboots (M, 43K) I really like the way this author writes the complexity of emotions that come with heartbreak and reconciliation in this one. It’s really moving and, oh what a surprise, it made me cry!

Lightning Strikes Twice by @dinosaursmate​ (E, 106K) It’s not often that I read a 100+K fic multiple times, but this one is worth it. It’s one of my favorites from this author, and a favorite all around. It’s an epic love story spanning decades and massive life changes. It’s sexy and well-written, and so touching, and so fulfilling in many ways. Famous!Harry, groupie!Louis (also bookstore owner Louis, but that’s later).

This one I’ve read, but so long ago that I don’t have a clear memory except that I liked it:

The three of them have always been a unit, seamlessly pulling pranks to get revenge and keep life interesting. The last few months of sixth form bring about a lot of changes, however. Gemma refuses to let anything stop her from getting into her top-pick uni, Perrie second-guesses what makes her special, and Louis breaks the most common of friend codes: he falls for his best mate’s little brother. A coming-of-age tale rife with sneaking around, late-night vandalism, first times, successes, and jealousy.

Hmmm. That’s a good question. I think I’ve got a few you might like.

I’ll start with the two you mention:

Tired, Tired Sea by mediawhore / @mediawhorefics (M, 113K) Always a favorite author, this one is beautifully descriptive and moody and charming. I was anxiously waiting for this one from the first drabbles I saw on Tumblr. I loved the way Harry’s character unfolded and let Louis in, the way Louis made space for him in his life (and heart), and the way Harry’s character struggled with and eventually found a way to live and be happy with his fame.

Escapade by dolce_piccante (E, 146K) Escort Harry. I know, I know. This fic really doesn’t need more recs –– everyone knows this one. But It’s a good one. In particular, the hate to love chemistry of the main characters is done really, really well. It’s a really fun read

Golden by Shaylea (E, 128K) I loved this author‘s last fic, and somehow, they managed to write another captivating story that’s so immersed in the country it takes place in. I was sucked in right from the start and really like how they write complex, flawed characters that you still root and cheer for. It’s a bit neat in its conclusion, but I think it’s very much worth a read.

Deux Fantômes by ohpleaselarry (E, 16K) So, let me start by saying I cried through ¾ of this. I promise it’s a happy ending, but it’s heavy and very moving. Please read the tags as there are some triggering things, but it’s also so sweet and gentle and really well written.

Turning Page by purpledaisy (M, 68K) This author does a wonderful job with their characterizations which makes their fics such a pleasure to read. This one really has you rooting for curmudgeonly Louis and skittish/secretive Harry to figure their shit out and fall in love. If you like this one, make time to read this author’s fic, Walk That Mile – it’s one of my all time favorites. 

Lambing Season by @helloamhere (E, 26K) This is beautiful little emotional fic and it’s one of my favorites. If you’ve ever wanted to leave your shitty work environment, escape to an idyllic countryside, and find love along the way, read this one. 

I Walk The Line by Awriterwrites / @a-writerwrites (E, 55K - Spy AU) This author is always one of my favorites – her fics are always sexy, fun, fast paced, and she often likes to throw a curve ball in when you least expect it. This one is no different. 

Fall Into Your Gravity by zarah5 (E, 74K) My notes on this one are useless. But I remember loving it and as I’ve already said, all of this author’s fics are worth reading. A little mistaken identity makes for good times!

Yellow by 13ways / @13ways-of-looking (E, 85K) Oh mah gawd. I love this fic so much. This was the result of a reverse big bang I made a prompt for and I’m forever grateful that this was the author who chose it! Yes, it’s Batman/Catwoman. No, you don’t ned to know anything about the comics. But wow! Such good pacing, the smut scenes are fire, the concept is so original and keeps you guessing until the very end. Link is to a download.

Landslide by aimmyarrowshigh, spibsy (lucy_and_ramona) (E, 143K - FBI) Read the tags on this one, it’s very realistic and there’s a LOT going on. These authors are terrific together (they wrote my favorite polyamory fic series) and the writing here is excellent. They really capture the grittiness of living “off the grid” in the 1970s as well as the angst involved with questioning everything you know about yourself and the person you’ve fallen in love with. 

And actually, I think my fic would work here as well.
