Nalini Chat w/ Ali Hazelwood
Some highlights from her chat today with Ali hosted by East City Bookshop.
she's currently writing the next Guild Hunter novel
Q: what is special about this book in the series for you? A: This book is really about family and I think it's been a big thing throughout the series from the beginning. it felt like the right time in the timeline for this book to happen. Prepare to be emotionally destroyed. She cried writing it. It's a book about family and who we are and those who make us and influence our lives. There is joy! Really important book int he series because it closes a lot of loops which is important to move forward.
Q: what is it like to go back to raphael and elena after writing books about other characters? A: It doesn't feel weird going back because they're always part of the books regardless of who we're focusing on. It's this massive world and we just went and visited someone else. -they're the heart of the series. No matter where else we go they exist and are part of it in some way.
Q: When you weren't writing them did you miss them? A: She does. The newsletter shorts are because she does miss them and writes for them when it's not their book. "I write my own fan fiction"
Q: Shorts in a collection? A: yeah, if there was enough desire for it. She would go ahead and do that. She'll add it to the to do list and poll people if there is a want.
Q: What does she feel about werewolves lore in general since they're closest to changelings. A: Would have been writing werewolf fan fiction had she known about it online. The only thing she didn't like was that they don't want to be werewolves.
Q: What you have written has influenced a generation of writters, how does that feel knowing you have been so impactful on the lives of so many people? A: It's weird. It's a continuous timeline and you just go book to book without realizing the passage of time. Didn't set in until she got her 20 years in the publishing industry anniversary. It's startling. Her hero is Anne Mcarthy and for someone to think of her in the same way is wild.
Q: is it difficult to write a highly anticipated character/pairing? A: She's obsessed with them already for a while before introducing them. You really have to go into your own head and block out what people are expecting. That's the only way it'll be her own.
Q: Does it ever happen that you annoy yourself with your slowburn? A: "I do and then i write it and release it 10 years later."
Q: Is Raphael's father going to come back? A: "Well, he's dead."
Q: who is your favorite young character? A: Really like writing all the kids. They're hilarious and fun to write. Really loves Izzy and wants to protect him the little baby angel. Curious to see who he'll be when he gets older with all these influences around him.
-Thought she would write a book about Elena's sisters but they appear a lot in Lineage and it closes up their stories enough that there is resolution and she won't be writing their own story.
-The series is slowly (slowly) wrapping up. It was always based around elena and raphael and it should end where it makes sense. not drag it out
-Possible she might do some novellas because there are things that can't be wrapped up in the books. Will absolutely keep writing shorts and adding them to the newsletter.
Q: Is there another series in the works for when GH is over? A: Has an idea for a book she'd like to write but won't know if it's a series until it's written.
Q: Are we getting more of Illium and Aodhan? A: It's the next book. it's a different book than Light. There's still some emotional stuff to take care of. There are also major changes in the world. get to see more of the other characters with them. The cover should match the Light one, complimentary.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she’s the best—but she doesn’t know if she’s good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, only one thing is clear—failure is not an option…even if the task is impossible. Because this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad. The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other…and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn’t destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break…

That’s why he’s my husband 🥹
Just thinking about Dmitri being literally the best dad for Illium and basically raising him instead of his trash of a father.
And him being Naasir’s literal dad? Basically adopting him, and treating him as a son even now, when Naasir is like over 300 yrs old.
And Naasir thinking of Honor as his mom the moment he meets her, and Honor treating him as a son?
MY DADDY AND MOMMY ISSUES CAN’T HANDLE THIS SHIT

“B-but Gwyn can’t have sex because of her trauma and Azriel is kinky in bed so they can’t be together”
Me who has read Archangel’s Blade by Nalini Singh :
Do yourself a favor and read other books by other authors. PLEASE!!!!!!!
Gwyn is not the first and will not be the last character with SA trauma to be written about and she will heal and have a banging hot sex life (if she wants of course🥰)
But yeah takes like this are so wierd to me and I have to conclude it comes from children because if you’re an adult and still think like this….yikes
Mind you even as recently as HOFAS,SJM has tackled this issue with Lidia and Ruhn….
Obviously when she writes Gwyn’s story it’ll play a bigger part of the story because HOFAS was a packed book and not much space to fully explore Lidia’s trauma. I am looking forward to reading how she handles it with Gwyn because she can and she will.
And if you have a problem with Gwyn having a healing loving sex life because you “care🥺” about her….lets see what you truly are….

I enjoy reading romance novels and I would love to write a fic that is essentially an essay about me fangirling about romance novels…and fanfiction. Mind you, when I talk about romance novels, I’m typically going along the lines of Jayne Ann Krentz and Nalini Singh. To be honest, they’re the two authors that I am currently reading.
However, I do know that is only the tip of the romance novel iceberg because there’s also the spicy romance novels and that is just too spicy for me.
Honestly, this started when @trickphotography2 posted her fic for the romcom writing challenge that @sorchathered hosted.
On a side note, it’s easy to read smut in public and keeping a straight face. I have a hard time with reading fluff in public and not smiling.
I’m actually not a big romance person, believe it or not lol I like adventure and fantasy more than I do romance, but I’m always down for the romance as long as it makes sense, ya know? I wonder if that translates into my writing at all 🤔

I saw a TikTok from an acotar fan that was like if you love Azriel you have to read this series specifically this book in the series!! And it’s Nalini Singh’s guild hunter series. There’s a character named Jason who’s basically azriel. I’ve been looking for new series so I started it, Jason’s book isn’t till the fifth I think? But anyways series is good! And even without getting to his book yet (I’m on book four), I was like no waaaaay 🤣 when he was introduced and the few scenes of him in the books. Because Sarah really ripped off nalini signh 😭 and I know it’s fantasy there are like so many angst shadow daddy carbon copy mcs running around but the similarities between Jason and azriel are so jarring, it’s even worse knowing that the series is one Sarahs recommended ? 😂 it’s just so blatant it’s crazy. Also crazier that acotar fans are recommending it so shamelessly because there’s zero like self awareness and outrage about Sarah potentially copying another writer!?? buts it’s more like guys hehe we don’t have azriel content yet so let’s all read this one until then 🥰 likes it azriel fanfic and not a published authors original work??? Call me crazy idk you can’t deny that Azriel is a Jason/Nalini Singh rip off, there’s being inspired and then there’s that…
Yesss somebody sent me this the other day. I find it weird that SJM often talks about the books that she loves and then there's just so much she's ripped from them. Like girl why are you giving us the receipts of all the books you've stolen from!!

Title: Archangel's Lineage (Guild Hunter #16
Author: Nalini Singh
Genre/s: romance, urban fantasy
Content/Trigger Warning/s: depictions of earthquakes and other natural disasters, grief
Summary (from author's website): Raphael and Elena are experiencing their first ever year of true peace. No war. No horrors of archangelic power. No nightmares given flesh. Until…the earth beneath the Refuge begins to tremble, endangering not only angelkind’s precious and fragile young, but the very place that has held their most innocent safe for eons.
Amid the chaos, Elena’s father suffers a violent heart attack that threatens to extinguish their last chance to heal the bonds between them and make sense of the ruins of their agonizing shared history.
Even as Elena battles grief, Raphael is torn from her side by the sudden disappearance of an archangel. But worse yet is to come. An Ancestor, an angel unlike any other, stirs from his Sleep to warn the Cadre of a darkness so terrible that it causes empires to fall and civilizations to vanish.
This time, even the Cadre itself may not be able to stop a ticking clock that is counting down at frightening speed…

Spoiler-Free Review: Well, that was something! Sadly, I have to say that this isn’t in my top five books in this series. The plot is pretty straightforward even with the MacGuffin at the heart of said plot, and it just hasn’t got the same amount of depth or interest as the plots of previous books.
But what really makes this book is what’s going on with the characters, especially Elena and her having to confront the mortality of those nearest and dearest to her. Given the ten-year time-skip a lot of characters who used to be children are now grownups, and it was great getting to check in with them again to see how they were getting on with their lives. It was those moments with Elena, where she was coming to grips with their mortality, that were the best parts of this book.
Also interesting were the bits involving Vivek, the hunter who was made into a vampire at some point in the previous books in the hopes that it would cure his disabilities. This book links him with a brand-new character in the series, and I am looking forward to seeing their connection develop and progress in upcoming books.
Speaking of new characters, another one is introduced in this novel that adds a whole new spin to the history of angelkind, and answers some lingering questions about the Legion as well. I’m not sure where Singh is going to take this series after this book, but at the very least I know it’ll be somewhere interesting, all things considered.
Overall, this was a pretty fun read, though not for its main plot. Instead, the best parts were in the side plots involving Elena, whose reckoning with mortality and family is always a fascinating thread and gets really explored in this novel. Vivek also gets some time to shine, and it’ll be really interesting to see where his story goes. That being said, this book introduces a whole new angle to the long distant past of angelkind, and sets the stage for some very interesting happenings in the future, which I am definitely looking forward to.
Rating: four angel feathers

One of my best friends from high school engaged in an international pen pal service. Many years later, she eventually married the Finnish man she had met through that letter exchange service (before the advent of the internet, but not too much before, lol). She now lives near Helsinki, but recently came back just this last month to visit many friends and remaining family members. (She can do the work-from-home thing which means she can work from just about anywhere so long as she has decent wifi.)
And she brought me Finnish chocolates (as she often does), which are less sweet than the kind you find in America, but quite good overall.
However, this time she brought a small bar as an experiment.
(The image is taken off of the Puhdistamo website.)
It's not a very big bar, about two fingers wide, a little bit more than finger-length long. But it was mint, and my friend knows I like mint.
Turns out, it does not taste like any chocolate I have ever had before. And the reason is in the "Raaklasuklaa" part of the name. Raw Chocolate*. (*Note, NOT a direct translation!)
What does that mean? Well...apparently...it's not fermented.
To clarify, chocolate goes through two (2) fermentation steps.
The first is when the pods are harvested, split open, and the seeds are scooped out and dumped into a pile with the pith (juicy bits) of the fruit, where they are lightly covered by leaves (iirc) and left to ferment in the open for a week or so.
Then they go to be cleaned, roasted, shelled, winnowed, ground, mixed with other stuff, special treatments of temperatures, etc...and then they get poured into bars that are then set aside for literal months to continue fermenting. This is the second round of fermenting.
I am not certain which step was skipped (it could be both for all I know), but this chocolate is not fermented.
Now, we mostly think of fermenting as being alcoholic (because drinks!), but it's not. Technically, pickles are fermented. Sauerkraut is fermented. This is a not-alcoholic-in-nature fermentation process that normal chocolate bars go through, to develop the rich, strong flavors that make chocolate so distinctive.
But in this Raakasuklaa bar...?
It's raw, not fermented.
The flavors are there, but they're very very subtle. The mint is much stronger. And like many things in Europe, it's not very sweet, so the mint is the highest riding note, but it's not overly sweet. (Kinda like spearmint gum, in fact.) Aside from the mint, it's mostly a texture that you notice. (Not an unpleasant one, just there's more texture than flavor...?)
I think this is a chocolate bar that those who cannot stand strong flavors would like.
Which makes me think of my fellow author Nalini Singh, and her Psy-Changeling universe, where the psy race underwent a century of emotionless existence in order to learn enough discipline to control their psychic powers. In order to ensure that cool logical attitude, they developed a lot of foods that were, well, bland. Because strong flavors provoke strong emotions.
This is a chocolate bar that would be consumed by the psy in Nalini's created world. it's a good bar that is remarkably mild Even if something is mild-mannered, that doesn't mean it's bad. It's simply something different.
If you are curious (and can get your hands on some), I say, why not give it a try?
(Just don't go into the experience expecting a strong flavor sensation.)

32 and 47!
From here
32. Favorite author
I'd be remiss if I didn't say Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien because he did write my favorite books of all time. But among those still publishing, Mary Doria Russell.
47. Last three books I read
I'm currently in the middle of rereading the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh, but I'd rather talk about the last three new-to-me books I read, which were Starter Villian, by John Scalzi, Stay True by Hua Hsu, and Making It So by Patrick Stewart.
Scalzi has been an insta-buy for me for years, I very much love his work. He's really found a niche in the funny, slightly ridiculous sci fi category, and this was no different.
Stay True is a memoir about how a good friendship, no matter how brief, can change your life.
And Making It So is exactly what it sounds like, a memoir by the one and only Sir Patrick Picard Stewart. I would say the majority of this book focused on his time in stage acting, but it was all good and interesting and I listened to the audio version so he read it to me. :)

Holy fucking shit. You all need to read Anne Bishop’s BLACK JEWELS SERIES. I just started reading it and not only does it (on the first page no less) describe SLAVES as having “dark membranous wings” aka bat boy wings—BUT it inspired both THRONE OF GLASS & ACOTAR!! Uhm HELLO????? Why is no one talking about this?
Also, I’ve been doing a read of the ORIGINAL queen of glass, which has so much HORRENDOUS fat shaming in the first three chapters I had to put it the fuck down.
The question is… who is SJM? What type of person is she? Don’t get me wrong I think she’s probably a really BAD person. But it leads me to wonder… what the fuck possessed her?
I have to admit seeing the stories in this lens is very enlightening. I would also suggest ANGEL’S BLOOD, by Nalini Singh. It’s the DIRECT “inspo” for Rhysand’s power. It features an Angel that has the basic equivalent to “daemati” gifts. She claims these authors are “friends” of hers. But I doubt that.
