I think they’re making fun of it because of how far it is from actual Chinese food. They’re making fun because British people went and bothered every single nation and couldn’t even collect food data properly. The food they eat that they call Chinese is no where near Chinese food and is actually disrespectful in my opinion. If you made a recipe and called it readyplayerhobi’s recipe and it was very near and dear to your heart and someone came and bullied you for eating it and for other reasons and then later on went ahead and told people they loved your recipe and made a complete different dish, you would be pissed too
See...the thing is...people are acting like it's white British people making this food.
It's not, it's Chinese immigrants making this food and owning these takeaways. Usually from Hong Kong, originally. British Chinese food is as authentic to China as American Chinese food, aka, it's not. In fact, a lot of Chinese takeaways in the UK usually say they're Cantonese.
No food will ever be exactly like it originally is because the tastes of the country it's brought to will be different, and they probably either didn't have or don't have the ingredients to make it authentically. It's why Korean versions of Western food, such as pizza or burgers, taste wildly different to the Westerm versions. That's just how they've changed it to match their palate.
British Chinese food did the same, just like American Chinese food did. I've seen disheartened British Chinese on TikTok because the food their family makes to make a living, and that they've openly said they'll eat too, is being made fun of/criticised.

大家好! After catching up with my nephew, LP, on CNY Day 2, we made arrangements to meet again over a relaxing lunch and coffee. Our restaurant of choice: the one which I brought parents to for authentic Japanese cuisine. He and I ended up choosing the same set lunch: nigiri sushi followed by chicken karaage, salad, chawan mushi, miso soup and fruit. The sushi was really delicious; the seafood covering each morsel of sushi rice was thick and succulent. LP loved the ikura maki most. The rest of the set meal didn't disappoint either; the chicken was crispy, tender and juicy, the chawan mushi was consistently good and the salad dressing of sesame paste and wafu was refreshing. We were so stuffed after eating but still made room for coffee.

For parents' loaded sandwiches this time, I tried something different by using sourdough bread and shrimp. The bread I bought was too long, hence the use of larger tupperware each, so I'm on the lookout for shorter slices. Nonetheless, they were thinner than the usual 9-grain bread so I was able to pile on healthier toppings and I did so by binding the salad vegetables with avocado hummus and spreading a thick layer on the sourdough, then heaping on a combo of boiled shrimp, chia seeds and avocado hummus topped with roasted seaweed and a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds. Parents loved this too so I'll include it in my usual rotation, except I may tweak the recipe a little to include either celery or cucumber. LP, who's trying to eat more healthily, wants to try making this!

As far as Cantonese folks and those of us with a Cantonese upbringing are concerned, congee, noodles and nourishing soups are childhood staples. We eat them all the time, especially when it's cold. When Pa and I caught up over the weekend, all I wanted was zhou (congee). The Hong Kong food court that we sometimes visit serves a pretty healthy seafood version. This comes with you tiao (fried dough fritters which I don't touch). The silky congee feels like a warm hug on a wintry day every single time I have it. This wasn't too salty and included lots of shredded ginger, diced fresh prawns, thick fish slices and fish maw. It was so delicious, if I could lick the bowl clean, I would have. YUM! Definitely returning to try their other menu items.

I also returned to the Vietnamese restaurant which serves yummy seafood noodles. I chose the spicy version because it was cold and rainy. It was just as delicious as the original version, filled with bouncy fresh shrimp, crunchy bean sprouts and slurpable noodles. There was a little heat but it wasn't unbearable, great for me since I don't tolerate spice well. Best of all, the piping hot soup was very comforting and not too salty. I'll probably revisit from time to time for their moderately healthy dishes. Prices are also quite reasonable for the amount of seafood they serve. At least I don't feel short-changed when I dine here.

Little by little, colour and vibrance are returning to Gaza. To those of us who've only known the strip as a lifeless, grey scene of destruction, it's wonderful to watch it come back to life and to see Palestinian smiles, already beautiful during 15 horrific months of genocidal war, grow even more radiant as they cook, clean and shop. It may take many years to rebuild Gaza back to its former glory but for now, Palestinians are back where they belong - home - and I'm so happy for them. 下次见!
