The Lucky Australian

~~ 6 Woke Up Late ~~

Woke up late

Somewhere far away from home

Pockets empty wallet gone

The sun is streaming all on down on my face

Yea, last night was fun lets do it again

We both know we're more than friends

Last night we met at one

Drank 'til two

Danced 'til four

Awake 'til dawn

Slept 'til noon

And now I want more

Henry woke up in a hotel bed.

The quiet of the summer morning and the sunshine warming his face, stirred him from his sleep. That, and the headache that was brewing in his head.

He felt his body melt into the bed as sleep beckoned him back, he was in that limbo state where sleep hadn’t left her lover yet, but his body was making itself heard. He needed to pee and a shower.

Henry cracked his eyes open finally, taking in the light, white airiness of the hotel room he found himself. Stretching out his arms, he looked to his side, only to see a mess of hair and a small body curled up under the sheets.

He looked at Aurora, covers pulled up to her ears as she slept soundly. Her body rising and falling softly with each breath taken. He slowly reached out to her, touching a small strand of hair that had fallen in her face. Moving it away, he lay there staring at her. In the light of day, he was able to study her more, organise her features into his brain and marvel at how something so tiny and now so quiet, was so loud and larger than life.

Aurora suddenly screwed up her face. Burrowing in deeper to the covers, she turned away from Henry. He thought it best to let her sleep for a little longer, she might be feeling just as dusty as he was after such a night. He got up off the bed, realizing he was fully clothes and smiled. It wasn’t often these days he found himself fully clothed in the presence of a female. After everyone had left the pub, his father and brothers calling it a night, Raphi and her friends left for a club. So they stayed, isolating themselves in a corner and talking for god knows how long until it was last drinks.

They just didn’t stop talking. On the way back to the hotel, Henry had thrown out any plans he had for the next day, content to just sit and talk on a fluffy hotel bed, until eventually they fell asleep.

After relieving himself, he came back into the room searching for his phone. Breakfast was exactly what he needed right now, maybe if he was sweet enough to the hotel staff they could find him a toothbrush as well.

Scrolling through his phone, a sudden movement caught his attention. He looked over to the bed only to see Aurora suddenly open her eyes. Seeming a bit disorientated, she buried her head in the pillow, then after a minute slowly pushed herself up. She stayed there, playing with the sheet for a bit before wiping her eyes. She took a deep breath and looked up at Henry. He smiled.

“Morning” he whispered.

She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

“Morning.”

They stared at each other for a minute before she broke the silence.

“Uh, did you need to use the bathroom before you go?”

Henry frowned

“No, I was going to get us breakfast and sweet talk my way into getting the hotel staff to get me a toothbrush”

Without a word, Aurora got out of the bed, dressed in only a shirt and pink knickers she moved over to the couch where suitcases were siting. Fishing around a bit she pulled out a sealed toothbrush and walked over to hand it to Henry.

“Thanks, I like the pink by the way” his eyes traveling down her body.

Aurora smiled and rolled her eyes.

“One should always be prepared. I’ll eat anything except mushrooms and coffee" she said, making her way to the bathroom.

Henry followed.

"Wait, no coffee?" He stopped at the bathroom door.

Aurora turned around.

"Correct, no coffee for me." She said closing the door. A second later, the shower turned on.

Henry turned back around, walking around the room looking for the menu. He sat at the table, mulling over his choices when a notification broke his concentration.

Looking up, his eyes fell onto the ipad on the table opposite him.

Notification after notification popped up.

I am fucked, so i'm staying Hanhan today. not moving from the bed.

I am in desperate need of a kebab, do they have them here?

How'd it go with supes? bit of boning or nah?

Amusingly he watched the messages come through.

Did you sleep ok?

Did you have nightmares again?

Nightmares?! Henry burrowed his brow in confusion. Aurora seemed fine. What nightmares?

I'll be back later if you need me. Hanhan is worried about you, she wants to talk to you at some point, you know what shes like. I didnt tell her what happened.

If Henry wasnt confused before, he sure as shit was now. What nightmares? What happened?

Dear god, he hoped this wasnt some weird crazy bullshit, he really liked this girl. What could've possibly happened? an abusive ex? running from bad luck? what??

Hearing the shower turn off, he turned his attention back to the menu. His eyes glazing over the words, none of them making sense.

Aurora stepped into the room, towel draped around her tiny frame. she sat opposite him and picked up the ipad as another notification came through. Henry watched her, as her her features darkened for a bit, rolling her eyes, she shot of a quick message before throwing the ipad in her suitcase and turning her attention on Henry.

"So.. anything look good?"

She did, in nothing but a towel. Henry averted his gaze.

"Plenty. Gives me a bit of time to shower before the food arrives." Henry started to call the front desk. He smiled at her as he made his way to the bathroom, questions racing in his mind.

After showering, dressing and eating, Henry felt a bit better facing the day. They sat in silence for a few minutes.

He couldn’t stop the thoughts racing, or what came out of his mouth.

"Raphi ok? he messaged you a few times while you were in the shower"

Aurora looked up at him.

"Nursing a hangover, but otherwise fine. He just needs a kebab. Actually, knowing him its more like KFC" she pulled a face.

"Not a fan?"

"God no! Maccas is the closest I get, on the odd occasion I eat it.

"Maccas?"

"Yeah, mcdonalds. Aussies shorten everything they can" Aurora laughed.

They fell into another silence. Still, Henry could not get those invasive thoughts out of his head, if there was anything she was hiding, he wanted to know.

"Uh, I didn’t mean to intrude, but...he asked if you had nightmares. Is it a recurring thing?"

Aurora froze, and looked him dead in the eye. She didn’t move.

Henry shuffled in his seat.

"I did, and yes it is. Sometimes it is a recurring thing. I guess if we are gonna spend a few nights together after this-"

"-I hope so"

She smiled at his interjection.

"then you should know, I do have recurring nightmares and night terrors. Not as bad as they used to be, but they do happen"

"What do you mean not as bad as they used to be? Is it related to anything?"

Aurora sighed.

"Yes. they started 3 years ago. its related to trauma. Don't worry Henry, its not a big deal now, just an....ex? i guess you could say?"

"Was it a bad relationship?"

Her eyes misted over as she looked everywhere but at Henry.

"No, the opposite. It was wonderful for how long we were together. I just didnt expect it to end how it did is all."

Aurora sighed and rubbed her eyes.

"Henry, I really dont want to talk about it. If we end up being in each other lives for a while, I promise I will tell you, but for now, I dont want to ruin any time we have together, deal?" Aurora extended her hand across the table.

Henry looked at her, and down at her hand. He wrapped his hand around hers.

"Deal" He smiled gently at her.

They found themselves sitting a tiny little bar, nestled in the back, hiding from prying eyes. The velvet chairs and dim lights doing all sorts of things to Henry, amplifying his pure enjoyment at being in the company with the woman he had his arm around.

He marveled at how her tiny frame just meddled so well into his larger, bulky one.

How her hands raked delicious sensations across his skin anytime she touched him.

How, her laugh permeated every part of his soul, egging on his goofiness.

How her sharp wit and sense of humor kept him on his toes.

How she was able to match him drink for drink

Most importantly, how she challenged him and how incredibly smart she was.

He knew why sonnets and poems and songs had been written about women, about love and infatuation, but perhaps, he didnt truly understand until meeting her. Infatuation was already well established, but that niggling feeling that this could be much more and the impatience of that emotion bubbling at the surface was enough to disarm him completely.

Henry became hyper aware of everything with her. Those literal electrical currents zapping through his body when they touched. The way his heart fluttered when he watched her come back from the bar, and the involuntary smile that would creep upon his face when she resumed her place next to him.

Like a teenager, he had felt all giddy when they started to get closer to each other, little touches here and there, whipsers and tickles on each neck as slowly, boundaries were tested. The new sensations of touch and blossoming love triggering all sorts of emotions in Henry that threatened to spill out. Either emboldened by this feeling or the alcohol, he wasn't sure, but he thanked whatever diety existed when he was able to put his arm around her and she willingly moved in closer to him.

She had buried her head in his chest and placed her hand on his chest as laughter racked her body. She pulled away slightly, only to look at him and fall into fits of giggles again.

Henry looked at his almost empty drink. He took the last swig.

"As much as I dont want this day to end, I know that you have friends to see tomorrow. I'll take you back?" Henry looked at her.

Aurora pouted at him.

His heart melted.

"Dont do that to me. If you come home with me, I will not let you go"

"At your place, there's Kal, and there's you...what part of that is bad?"

He rolled his eyes and laughed at her as he stood up and extended his hand to her.

Soon enough, they found themselves walking into her hotel lobby, not one to be any less of a gentleman, he followed her up to the room.

"well, this is me" she whispered

"Nice digs you got there. rent expensive?"

"You wouldnt believe"

They looked at each other in silence, grinning like absolute idiots.

All Henry wanted to do was kiss her, just once, and maybe that would sustain him for a few days. Just to know what it was like to kiss her, to feel her, to abate those damn butterflies in his stomach.

He looked down at her. Then at her door.

"I think we both should get some sleep" as horrible as the thought sounded to him. He took a step back, maybe he had overestimated how much she liked him, maybe she wasnt going to kiss him, maybe he had gotten ahead of himself...maybe, maybe, maybe.

"Henry, before you go..."

He looked at her.

Aurora smiled and pulled him down to kiss her. Her hand wrapping around the back of his head. Her firm pressure letting him know exactly what she wanted.

That was new. Usually he was the one to initiate the kiss. This, he liked. Having her kiss him. That he REALLY liked.

Then he was caught up in her lips, her taste, her scent. His arms wrapping possessively around her, and holding her as close as he could for those fleeting seconds of bliss.

His chest swelled with happiness as he continued to kiss her.

Then, his lungs started burning with the need for air.

It was the worst thing in the world when he pulled away from her, he rested his head against hers, eyes closed and just holding her, hugging her. She was the lighthouse, he was the ship. He knew in that moment, as early and as insane as it was, that he needed her. Those few moments of just hugging her brought a new layer of intimacy to their relationship. it was so simple, so profound.

He rested his head on her hair and opened his eyes, readjusting to reality around him.

He slowly pulled away from her.

"I promise you, as soon as you want to see me again, I will be here faster than you can blink" He said.

She smiled up at him.

"I'll call you" Aurora laughed

"You had fucking better!" He released her from his grip.

He slowly made his way to the lift. He stopped midway to run back to her just before she opened the hotel door to steal another kiss.

He watched her enter her room as he waited for the elevator to take him to the lobby, to the taxi that would take him home. Without her.
