The Butterfly Effect – Monique Prosser

Argument

After exploring the scientific manipulation of flora in my previous project, I wanted to extend my studies of anaglyphs through a new conceptual drive. Looking at Raku Inoue’s Insect Flower Arrangements reminded me of the concept of The Butterfly Effect and thus Chaos Theory. This concept looks at how small changes in the initial conditions of an event can lead to drastic changes in the results from the event. In other words, it explains how events happen as a response to a chain of events that precede it, and the outcome of that event could be different if the chain before it is altered in some way.

In this project, I plan to represent The Butterfly Effect using a combination of light photography and anaglyphs. Each photograph of the series will encompass a chaotic assemblage of light clusters that respond to a different world event examined through chaos theory. For example, if Adolf Hitler were accepted into the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1907 instead of being twice rejected and having returned home to his dying mother in Germany, he may never have joined the army and perhaps the events of WW2 may never have happened.

Each composition of photographs will act as my personal interpretation/ response to world events through connotations of colour and shape. It is unclear as to whether the light drawings will be drawn in the shape of different butterflies or clusters of lines to represent chaos or the symbol of the butterfly effect. The events I will respond to will be drawn from a list of the 20 Greatest 'Butterfly Effect' Moments in History.

This approach to the project allows me to connect with several contemporary artmaking practices and artists like Peter Solness and Darren Pearson (Darius Twin), as well as various influences of the art world across history simultaneously. In doing this I hope to represent and interpret the past through contemporary modes and features.

Methodology and media

I will be using a Canon DLSR 750D to create a digital, photographic series. The clusters of light will be created using small LED lights of different colours. The series will consist of 8 photographs displayed on walls facing each other with four photos on each wall like a hallway. 3D glasses will be provided for viewing.

Each photograph will be displayed horizontally and be roughly A3 size paper (297 x 420 mm). These specifications have been chosen to create an intimate experience between the viewer and work. Ideally with the right funding and gallery setting I would love to display this works on an extremely large scale, perhaps covering an entire wall, but due to my circumstances a smaller scale print is more achievable.

Quantity

Each week I will aim to complete one photograph of the series accompanied by a critical/historical study of the world event it is derived from. Each session will be conducted at night with no lighting in the frame but the moving LED lights to capture the long exposure time. The photos will then be edited using Photoshop to be turned into Anaglyph pieces.
