What do you think drove Frazie and Dion apart?
A lot of things, really.
There's the big, obvious reason—Frazie's psychic, Dion shares his parents' psychophobia. There's the stresses of puberty, of financial strain, of younger siblings that their parents can't care for on their own. There's the differing ways that Frazie and Dion respond to stress—Dion represses, buries everything and pretends to be stoic and unaffected, while Frazie finds something to throw pinecones at to work out her frustrations.
There's Dion trying oh so hard to be "grown up", trying so hard to be Responsible and Mature as a result of his parentification, cutting out the things he views as childish and acting like a jerk. There's Frazie coping with her own parentification in similar ways (no longer playing mind games with Raz, trying to hide her powers, "I'm not going to break Mom and Dad's hearts like you did."), yet still being able to engage with her younger siblings on their level. There's a friction between them, now, that wasn't there before.
There's a lot of things that caused friction between them. A lot of things that combined to create a space between them that wasn't there before.
#ask zaz#psychonauts#dion aquato#frazie aquato#see while i do like to think that dion got the worst of it when it came to parentification#i don't think frazie was exempt from it either#they're the eldest. they both have extra responsibility put on them#and frazie's desire to live up to her parents' expectations is battling her desire to actually explore her psychic powers#also like. dion trying so hard to be ''grown up'' but instead of‚ say‚ trying to approach problems maturely#he just tries to disconnect himself from anything he deems ''childish''#tries to bury his emotions and put on a stoic front like his dad#except it's not that simple. augustus is reserved‚ but he's actually got a good handle on his emotions and how to process them#dion's just got a stick up his ass#a kid trying so hard to be an adult without a real understanding of what that means#because he's still a kid. he's still growing#and trying to force himself to grow faster isn't healthy :[

my take on teenage raz and lili!
some design notes under the cut:
They're intended to be about 16 here! I didn't go for anything too drastic in terms of changes -- these are largely just what I'd consider natural evolutions of their canon designs
For Raz, my main focus besides just making him look older was to add a bit more resemblance to the other Aquatos in his design, since his relationship with them wouldn't be strained like it is during canon
Raz is shown with very straight hair in canon, but since most of his family's hair is more wavy or curly I tend to imagine he styles it that way on purpose as part of his Sasha Nein cosplay or whatever. He wouldn't still feel the need to do that at this point, though, so for this design I wanted to make it more curly, similar to Augustus or Frazie, while still similar to his canon style. This turned out to be incredibly difficult and I'm still not entirely happy with where I landed, but it's good enough
I didn't think he would still wear the helmet but I didn't want to discard it entirely, so the goggles were a compromise. I meant to give them some visible scratches and wear and tear since they're presumably the same goggles he's been wearing since he was 10, but I forgot. rip
Obviously the most notable change to Raz's outfit is the scarf -- I wanted something that would tie him visually to the other Aquatos while still fitting with his general look. I imagine they gave it to him as a gift, sort of an acknowledgement that even if he doesn't perform with them as an acrobat, doing his Psychonaut work is his own way of being an Aquato
Raz's outfit here is honestly very similar to his PN2 outfit. This is because in my eyes "long coat and turtleneck" is Peak Character Design and cannot be improved on. (Hence why I may not be the best person to redesign Raz.) He has an actual coat rather than just an oversized blazer this time though, so that's an improvement. With the turtleneck I was was vaguely intending for it to be color-wise something of a middle ground between the Sasha-style green striped turtleneck and the Aquato blue/green and white stripes, but it ended up basically just being the PN1 stripes with the PN2 color. which, you know, that works
I went back and forth on what their heights should be -- I thought it would be kind of funny if Raz ended up short and Lili ended up taller than him, but then I decided to just make them more in line with their families, with Raz being tall and lanky and Lili being average verging on short. Except then I accidentally made Lili tall anyway because I was only vaguely considering her height relative to Raz. I guess Lili's probably taller than her dad now? good for her ig
Most of their facial features are just slight variations of how they look in canon -- slightly smaller eyes and so on. the only real specific change is that Lili has a more defined nose now, similar in shape to her father's
Lili's outfit here is more different from either of her canon outfits than Raz's is, but there's still not much that really requires a ton of explanation. The goal was to make her look vaguely cool and fashionable, although as I am neither of those things I cannot guarantee I was successful
I tried a couple different hairstyles for Lili, and I'm still not entirely set on this one -- Originally what I settled on was to give her two braids, which I did like, but I kept doing sketches of her where I just drew the top part of the hair and was like "ngl this kind of works on its own" and so I ended up going with the short hair. I also briefly tried an asymmetrical haircut but I couldn't get it to look right. I think this one suits her though
Lili's tattoo (on her left wrist) was a later addition to the design, and even in the later stages of drawing this I wasn't sure whether to keep it. I like it conceptually I just haven't figured out a consistent design for it yet, only that it has to be of plants
god these notes got way longer than I meant them to be I am so sorry. Uh basically I'm still figuring out the details of these designs but for now here's Raz and Lili, they're teenagers now, thanks for reading
#still not completely set on these designs but i think i've mostly gotten an idea of what i want from them#i'll probably revisit them in the future. i'm happy with these for now tho#razputin aquato#lili zanotto#psychonauts#psychonauts 2#my art

Shoutout to your Raz for being a little cutie patootie anyway can you spare a headcanons about him for the poor *holding out my little orphan lad hat*
hehehe thank you also OH BABY YOU KNOW I CAN! i may have like 3 hours before i have to get a train to georgia but i always have time for RAZ and TALKING about RAZ!
PAX RAZ HEADCANONS GO! NO PARTICULAR ORDER OR THEME.
raz becomes pescetarian after the meat circus. i say pescetarian and not vegetarian because of his toxic relationship with Crab Sandwich. crab sandwich is raz's friend. but raz kind of wants to eat crab sandwich.
^ raz is kind of a freak.
like all things, raz picks up hydrokinesis pretty quickly, but for a while the Hand of Galochio Aquato will not grant him access to water deep enough to swim in. he beats himself up over this somewhat because neither queepie or frazie struggle with the hand like he does and while they're learning to swim, he's standing on the surface of the water like jesus.
actually, i feel like the Hand was always the most physically real to raz than any of the others because of his lack of denial about being a psychic. all the others felt the unnatural fear at a body of water and it grew much more violent and undertowed in the presence of the psychics, but a young razputin aquato heard the name "Hand of Galochio" and took that very literally.
sorry for the sadcanons. bonus augustus headcanon for your trouble. this barrier to water is something raz and dad can bond over, because while augustus can physically get in the water, he is utter ass at swimming and learns it the slowest of anyone in the family. he is so brave but after a lifetime of water curse, being in it feels the most unnatural. you know that clip from golden boy of kintaro(?) drowning all the way across the pool before turning around and very badassly going "So! How do you like my swimming. >:)" that's augustus while raz runs across the water beside him cheering him on.
he got his goggles from true psychic tales magazine, but he uses them now mostly to combat visual overstimulation. it takes him several years to realize that's what he's doing. projecting through a psi portal is very visually intense and that's why raz is convinced for the longest time that those things actually did anything psychic.
a combination of what donatella calls "sibling survival instinct" being surrounded by so many kids his age at camp, needing to blow off steam after just having run away from home, and wanting to make a good impression at his big new job is what explains the difference in raz's rudeness between psychonauts 1 and 2. in psychonauts 3, raz is going to repeatedly say some out of pocket shit to some fellow kids and then feel really guilty because he's a professional now.
i know i've said this before but it bears repeating that raz is a little menace about tickling. he just genuinely likes it and can't imagine that anyone might not. but he's soooooo shy so his primary way of getting tickles himself is being a little shit. that tends to do the trick. he's definitely not extremely obvious about it every single time. everyone totally doesn't know what he's doing.
raz proudly eats food off the floor. raz thinks wasting food is a crime!! he'll eat your leftovers. he'll drink the rest of your soda. he'll eat the other half of your sandwich. empty your unwanted snax into the grumpus that is razputin aquato.
this is sometimes the only way to get him to eat because often he forgets to until his stomach is screaming at him to spare its life. when he is very focused on something for a while, raz's neglect of himself hits him all at once. man im tired- ooh wait im hungry- oh im thirsty too- AH my eyes hurt have i not been blinking- whoa how is it after midnight already- OUCH i have a headache! my feet hurt! etc. he. needs people looking out for him.
raz is going to be a really good dad one day.
raz knows he is cute. intellectually. he uses this to his advantage to subtly manipulate adults into letting things slide or giving him floor bacon. but he has not internalized the fact that he is genuinely a little cutie pie not through his genetics and social engineering skills, but by being a little dorky smush face who is always earnest, borderline transparent, so so so brave, easily embarrassed, wanting to be friends with everyone, being a little baby bean,[i am slowly dragged off the stage with a cane]
#psychonauts#razputin aquato#not art#headcanons#i got carried away#uh oh i missed my train!#there are more. there are so many more. these are what i could think up right now

Ranking Aquato family members by how likely they are to commit tax fraud (least to most)
8 - Razputin Aquato
Of all the members of the Aquato Clan, Raz is currently the only member confirmed to be working for the government. He's the absolute model of a federal employee. The kind of agent they would make naively optimistic 50s movies about. The kind of hero who is everything J Edgar Hoover was not. Honest, caring, loyal, hardworking, excited to chase the call of adventure alongside his heroes, who are also employees of the federal government. He's not a slave to authority, but he could best be described as "Lawful Good" in D&D terminology. As such, Raz would never commit tax fraud. He only wants to help people, rescue their brains, and occasionally commit arson and kill animals. But only when its cool. Also, he hates math.
Likelihood: Never.
7 - Dion Aquato
Dion is a contentious character. Some people hate him because of the way he bullies and insults Raz. Others like him because they see past that and see him as depressed and anxious teenager who's taking his insecurities and pain out on his little brother out of jealousy and the fear of his entire world changing around him. But we're not here to talk about that: we're here to ask if he'd commit tax fraud. The answer is he's simply not smart enough to. We're talking about a guy who heard from his toddler-aged brother that real living human beings reproduced via eggs. He simply isn't smart enough to figure it out. He'll either need a caregiver or spouse to file his taxes for him, or he'll download a terrible app on his phone that he can just barely navigate and might still have to go through an audit just because he got stuff wrong.
Likelihood: Too dumb to commit tax fraud. Even if he were smart enough, he'd probably get frustrated and bored very quickly.
6 - Augustus Aquato
Auggie won't lie to you, the thought of cheating on his taxes has definitely crossed his mind. There's a lot of overhead on a circus, even a small one. With how much the family struggles financially, the temptation has always been there to write off a few fake expenses. But he never has, because he's a responsible father and husband, and would never want to endanger his family by putting their finances and freedom in jeopardy.
Likelihood: Highly unlikely. Good dad energy too strong.
5 - Mirtala Aquato
The member of the family we know the least about. She seems kind enough, though often times sarcastic and smart-alikey. A spirited and adventurers young lass, she might find certain parts of the Internal Revenue Code to be arbitrary, annoying or overly cumbersome. The thought might occur to her to commit tax fraud, but its doubtful she'd ever go all the way through with it. The potential jail time and fines would likely be enough to make her decide against it.
Likelihood: Might do it under pressure, but very unlikely otherwise.
4 - Donatella Aquato
A very passionate Italian mother, often times theatrical. Also very uncool about guilt-tripping her kids! Not cool, Donna! Though in fairness it's treated as a gag, and seems to just be her way of burning off the conflicting emotions she's going through. Still, sometime in the VERY near future she needs to give her son a hug and an apology! Moving on to the tax fraud, she's most likely faced the same temptation as her husband, but likely has weaker moral reservations. Donatella strikes me as the rebellious type, the kind who'd angrily stare down the head of a government agency for talking shit to her. Were it not for Augustus reminding her of the dangers, she'd probably get "creative" with her return filings.
Likelihood: Possibly. Similar motivations to Augustus but less moral apprehension. It'd take some pressure before she gives in.
3 - Frazie Aquato
She's a bitch but I like her. She throws shit around and says fucked up evil things. But she still clearly has a heart, can have a pleasent conversation with Raz, and even admits she misses him. Like Dion, she's a dumb teenager with issues, she's just slightly less douchey about it. Slightly. Would she commit tax fraud? This girl breaks into private government property, tosses pinecones at people and skulks around in trees like a spider monkey.
Likelihood: Would commit tax fraud, but doesn't make enough money. She lives in the woods.
2 - Queepie Aquato
This child is an agent of chaos. He runs around in the forest at the age of like 4 and is under no threat by wild animals. If anything, the wild animals are scared of him. His mind conjures up insane and silly conspiracies about psychics that he doesn't even believe and tells his older brother just to fuck with him. This kid will claim his toys and dependents to help fund his pirate radio station.
Likelihood: Already commiting tax fraud with his co-conspirator Morris Martinez.
1 - Nona Aquato
Nona has been committing massive tax fraud for decades, but only by accident. She's been filing as her dead sister, whose identity she unwittingly stole. By now, she's in her golden years, and I'm sure she figures it's too late to stop now. Might as well go the extra mile and fudge some of those numbers. Especially since she recently reconnected with her friend Cassie O'Pia, infamous criminal counterfitter. The stuff Cassie knows about cooking books will be instrumental to her fraudulent claims.
Likelihood: Serial tax scammer

How do the rest of the Mystery Kids feel about and interact with Raz's family?
Ooooh this one is fun. I'm going to leave Raz and Lili out of this one for obvious reasons.
Dipper: Honestly, I think he could get along with Raz's dad. His dad is more curious about psychic stuff now so I think they can geek out a little. As a treat. Dion reminds Dipper too much of Robbie.
Mabel: Trying to think about this, but I think Mabel could get along with Raz's sisters. She would try to get along with everyone else and while they might not click (seeing Dion and Mabel having a similar relationship to Robbie and Mabel), she would try and say they are friends.
Coraline: Raz's mom would rub her the wrong way like oh my gosh- She is not a fan of Raz's family. They're his family so she'll grin and bear it but she wants to get away.
Wybie: He would be awkward, but I think he'd get along alright with Frazie. More naturally with Augustus though. Donatella scares him.
Norman: I can see Norman having interesting conversations with Nona's sister and her husband. He also probably will hang out with Nona and Mirtala. He is going to avoid Dion and Donatella like the plague. Frazie... He has concerns. Augustus is a very nice change of pace.
Neil: I can see Neil trying to be friends but having trouble with Dion. He isn't as good at being buddy buddy with them like Mabel is.
Wirt: Wirt does not want to be here. He does not like the circus. Honestly, as people he might like them, like Augustus. But due to the fact that they are always like "we are the Aquato family circus!!!" he does not want to be around them.
Greg: Oh my gosh, Greg loves them. They are from the circus! They have a tiny pony! This is cool!
Luz: She would probably be enamored by Augustus using powers, and Frazie if she ever found out if Frazie could be invisible. She does not like the attitude from the others about psychics. She does however find Dion to remind her of a certain "bad but sad" boy...
Anne: As acrobats, she does find them neat. If they (Dion) start picking on Raz though, she will tell them off and take Raz somewhere to chill.
Marcy: At this point, assume Augustus gets along with everyone lol. I can see her trying to be friends with Dion, and maybe trying with Donatella but then backing away slowly. She finds them neat, but doesn't really connect if that makes sense?
Sasha: She and Frazie have to talk like "one of the girls!"
This really was a fun ask. Thank you! ^-^
...I don't know about Queepie giving anyone a chance.

I'm going to make an attempt at participating in @ailesswhumptober! I don't know if I'll be able to write something every day, but we'll see how this goes. These fics will be un-beta'd and hopefully short.
Day 1: Drugging / sick / poisoned
Characters: Razputin Aquato, Augustus Aquato, Morceau Oleander (with other characters showing up briefly)
Warnings: Emeto
Summary: The camp is finally safe, but Raz didn't get through Meat Circus entirely unscathed.
---~~~---
The day after Thorney Towers exploded was a weird one for everyone.
Raz woke up in the middle of the day along with all the other campers. At first he wasn't sure the past few days had happened at all, and half-expected to hear his mom demanding to know why he wasn't up for early-morning stretches. But hearing the hushed voices of the campers around him and opening his eyes to find himself in a cabin, not a caravan, was enough to make him realize that, no, it was all real. Or... most of it was real. He still wasn't sure about the whole stopping-the-world-takeover thing, but his headache left him wondering. He stepped outside and jumped back in surprise when his father rushed up to him to make sure he was all right. Well, that confirmed that, too.
It was a strange way to start the day, especially when he was pulled aside by Sasha and Milla, who questioned him about everything that had happened in Coach Oleander's mind. Raz was still slightly out of it when he explained, and he hoped he did a good job. After everything that had happened, he felt kinda bad for the Coach.
The next few hours involved his dad and Sheegor trying unsuccessfully to keep Chef Ford in the kitchen long enough to make everyone something to eat, while the counselors disappeared and the campers raided the candy from the camp store. While Raz wasn't too thrilled about the latter, he couldn't turn Lili down when she offered him a psi-pop. Eventually Sasha and Milla returned with Oleander in tow, and made it clear to the campers that he wasn't going to be stealing brains anymore.
Raz was sitting with the Coach on the back deck of the main lodge, having a quiet conversation, when the door behind them opened. "Hi!" Sheegor said, popping her head out from behind the door. "Um... we finally got Mr. Cruller to start on lunch!"
"Oh, finally!" Raz exclaimed, hopping up from his seat. "I'm starving!"
"Me too," the Coach said, wincing as he rose, "but uh, I'm gonna grab something from my rations."
"Okay! Suit yourself!" Sheegor said, and ducked back into the lodge.
Raz followed her, finding the lodge was already full of campers sitting at the tables, excited to eat something other than candy. Grinning, he ran over to the camp store, where Chef Cruller was parked in front of the grill. "Hey, Ford!" he exclaimed. "Wha'cha cook..."
The smell hit him, and he stumbled to a halt.
"The burgers ain't done yet!" came Chef Cruller's voice, as though from a distance away. "The grill ain't even fired up yet!"
Raz wasn't looking at Ford. Rather, images of floors and walls and platforms made entirely of raw meat haunted the edges of his vision as he stared blankly ahead. Everything reeked, the smell of freshly-butchered flesh and dripping blood assaulting his nose. Slowly his gaze turned toward Cruller's side, to a plate where a number of raw hamburger patties sat, ready to be placed on the grill. The meat was ground, which immediately yanked his mind to visions of live bunnies dropping into meat grinders, and coming out...
His stomach flipped, and he covered his mouth, scrambling out the front door of the lodge. He made it to the edge of the deck and leaned over it just in time to discover just how acidic a psi-pop tastes the second time around.
Gripping the railing for dear life, Raz fought to catch his breath around the acrid taste in his mouth. His whole body was shaking, and he realized with a groan that everyone saw him freak out. His head clunked down against the railing, but hopefully no one would draw attention to--
"Razputin! Are you all right?!" Augustus cried, bursting out of the lodge and rushing up to him.
Raz stumbled back up to the wall and sank into a seated position, wiping his mouth. "Dad..." he croaked, his face flushing. On one hand, it was nice to have another reminder that his dad really did care about him, but on the other hand, he could hear the not-so-hushed whispers coming from inside the lodge.
Augustus crouched down next to him, placing a hand on his back. "You look so pale," he murmured, brow creasing in concern, before he gave Raz a gentle pat on the back. "You need some food in you. Come on, Chef Cruller will be done preparing lunch soon--"
"No!" Raz blurted, scooting further back against the wall as the memory of the smell and sight of blood and meat flared in his mind again. "I-I can't--the raw--the meat!"
Staring down at Raz in surprise, Augustus scratched his head. "Meat?" he repeated, only for something to click. He put a hand to his chin, glancing off to the side. "That's right--that mental world you were trapped in... You were there for quite some time!"
Wincing, Raz looked away from his dad, and was mortified to see a few kids poking their heads out from the door. He immediately recognized the mass of hair belonging to Bobby Zilch, who snickered before opening his mouth to say something. Before he could do so, a pink light enveloped him and the others, and gently tugged them back inside.
"Well, this is a predicament... We need to get you something to eat!"
Raz wrapped his arms around himself and drew his legs in closer. "It's okay. I-I'm... not hungry right now."
"What's that, soldier?!"
Groaning, Raz clunked his head down against his knees as Oleander burst out of the lodge, carrying something under his arm. "Not now..."
"C'mon, on your feet!" the Coach snapped, waving for Raz to stand up.
"What are you doing?" Augustus demanded, shooting a glare at Oleander. "He's not well!"
"Yeah, you don't need two eyes to see that," Oleander replied, his good eye taking a quick glance at Augustus before turning back to Raz. "C'mon, up!"
"Okay, okay..." Raz shakily rose to his feet, his arms still wrapped around his body, and cast a quick glance at the door. "Just... keep your voice down, please?"
The Coach followed his gaze, and the few campers that had huddled by the door again scrambled away. "Ah. Right." Clearing his throat, he stepped away from the door and around the side of the lodge. "This way, soldier. Forward march!"
After exchanging glances, Raz and his dad followed the Coach around to the back porch, where Oleander was setting out a few items--two brown plastic packets, a large metal water bottle, and a couple paper plates. The Coach reached into his pocket and pulled out a pocket knife, which he used to cut open the packets, and pulled a number of other smaller packets out of those. Raz found himself watching in interest, his hands slowly dropping to the side.
"A good soldier isn't gonna fight on an empty stomach," Oleander said, getting to work opening the smaller packets. One contained a candy bar, another contained utensils, and another Oleander didnot empty, but rather poured water into and re-sealed. "We gotta get some fuel in that tank."
Raz wilted. "That's the problem. I know I gotta eat something other than candy, but..." He shuddered. "Those burgers... they just made me think--"
"Yeah, well, you ain't alone."
Lifting his head, Raz noticed that Oleander was frowning down at the food he was preparing. Remembering what the Coach said about getting something else earlier, as well as some of the things in that mental world, something clicked in Raz's mind. "Oh! You... you don't eat meat, do you?"
"Bit hard to eat something you can have a conversation with," the Coach grunted.
"You can speak to animals?" Augustus asked, crossing his arms.
"I can, too!" Raz replied, and his dad cocked a brow at him with an amused smile. "I mean... only a little. I can understand mice! And squirrels, sometimes. But... I've never had trouble eating meat until now."
"You didn't see that part of my mind until now." The Coach lifted his helmet to scratch beneath it. "Sorry, kid. Didn't mean for that part of me to rub off on you." He turned back to the packets of food and resumed unpacking them. "But don't worry, you got options."
The food he ultimately dumped out of the bag turned out to be some mushy-looking pasta with vegetables. It wasn't particularly appetizing-looking, but... it didn't have meat in it.
After mixing in the sauce, Oleander handed a plate to Raz while he took another plate for himself. "Eat up!"
Hesitantly Raz took a bite, and his face lit up. While it wasn't particularly amazing, it actually... didn't taste bad, and all at once his appetite came back. Soon he found himself shoveling the food into his mouth, while Oleander joined in with his own meal.
Meanwhile, Augustus leaned back, his shoulders sagging in relief. "Thank goodness! You had me worried for a moment there." He brushed a hand against his beard. "I suppose I'll have to talk with your mother about making some vegetarian foods for a while."
"Mmmhmmm!" Raz hummed around a mouthful of food, only to freeze, swallowing. "Oh man, Mom's gonna kill me, isn't she?"
"I'm sure she'll be relieved to see you again," Augustus said with a chuckle.
"I hope so." Raz wiped his mouth on his glove and looked down at his plate. Now that he actually had some food in his stomach, he felt a lot less awful. It felt weird to think that the person who'd helped him had been the same one who, hours ago, had been trying to steal his brain. He looked up at Oleander and gave a smile. "Thanks for the food, Coach!"
Oleander grinned. "Anytime, soldier!"

Next chapter’s up!
Psychoborrower 2
Chapter 17
Right as we left Gristol’s mind, Hollis, Sasha, Milla, and Coach arrived.
“Were you just in the Grand Head of the Psychonauts?!”
To my surprise, Norma stepped forward. Though, maybe it was just to cover her own ass. Hard to say.
“Agent Nein, it’s not what it looks like!”
Milla sighed. “Kids, we just saw you come out.”
“But we weren’t in my Dad’s mind! That’s the mole!”
“No, the mole is Nick Johnsmith! Sasha figured it out, but I always had my suspicions.”
Coach smirked proudly, as if he wasn’t one of “Nick”’s biggest defenders.
They started to move in towards Gristol’s body, but we blocked their path.
“No, his brain’s not in there! It’s in my Dad’s head! Ugh, we don’t have time for this, we’ve gotta find his real brain!”
Lili grabbed Raz by the hand and pulled us both out the door, pushing past the agents.
He tried to keep up with her, but when Lili’s got her mind set on something, it can be tough to rein her in. She had already run far ahead of us by the time the storm started.
A watery cyclone was fast approaching from the Heptadome. Gristol went and did it. He awakened Maligula. Idiot.
“Okay, there’s a big swirling vortex of death behind us and all of the adults are back at the Heptadome, what do we do?!”
“We should get back to the campsite. Maybe my Dad can help.”
That was our best option, but I couldn’t help but be concerned for his mental state. I wasn’t sure how long it would take for his memories to come back, but even if they hadn’t recovered, seeing Maligula again was sure to bring back trauma for him.
When we arrived at the campsite, the Aquatos were all gathered in front of one of the tents. Augustus sat in the center, his head in his hands. It looked like he’d been crying.
Donatella was the first to notice us. She flashed the slightest smile when she greeted us, though there was still a somber look in her eyes.
“Hello, boys. He’s… been remembering some things.”
Raz’s older brother let out a frustrated sigh. “I knew we shouldn’t have come here.”
“Dion, please. Not now.”
He immediately shut up after his mother scolded him, then turned his attention back to Augustus. Raz sat down beside him, wrapping him in a hug.
“Oh, Razputin… I lost them. I lost… everyone.”
It seemed all of his memories came back at once. It was like he was forced to relive that terrible day when he lost his parents and was taken away to the orphanage all over again. And… he remembered my family.
I knew that restoring his memories would ultimately be a good thing, but I hadn’t considered that bringing them back would also bring back the pain. All those years, he never worried about what happened to them because he couldn’t remember them.
Everyone went quiet for a moment, all of us huddling together to comfort him. I was unsure if him seeing Mom again right away was the right move, but then again, there would never really be a “right” time for that sort of thing.
I was about to try and make a telepathic connection with her to ask her to come over, but I didn’t need to. I heard her and Dad approaching.
“Reed, what if he still doesn’t remember? I don’t know if I can handle doing this again…”
“You can, honey. I know you can. Youre the strongest person I know. Now, go.”
After a second, Raz’s younger sister, Mirtala, scooted aside, letting Mom through. The entire family looked down at her, waiting for her to speak. I can only imagine how intimidating it must have looked from her perspective, but she didn’t look shaken by it at all.
“Gus?”
He lifted his head, staring at her for a second until it clicked.
“Sibi!”
As if they’d never been separated, Augustus scooped her up and held her close.
“Oh, Sibi, I thought for sure… You were back in the caravan, and by the time I came back, you were… And I didn’t…”
“It’s okay, Gus. I’m here now. And I’m not going anywhere.”
I stared in disbelief for a second. “Wait, Mom, does that mean we’re staying?”
She smiled. “Of course, Flint. I had my doubts about the Psychonauts, but you and Raz brought my best friend back. I’m confident that they’ll have at least two great agents going forward.”
Raz chuckled, that ego of his seeping through. “Oh, they will.”
Unfortunately, by that point we could no longer ignore the approaching cyclone. We needed to somehow get close enough to Lucrecia to get back into her mind without getting washed away.
“We need to get back in there. Any ideas?”
At that, Dion grabbed Raz by the shoulders and started shaking him. With me still being on his shoulder, I have to say I did not appreciate it.
“What, are you crazy?! That thing’s gonna kill you! Are you forgetting about the curse that’s plagued us our entire lives?!”
“It’s not real, Dion. Ford made it up so Nona wouldn’t remember being Maligula. In fact, I’m pretty sure I inherited her Hydrokinesis. Not sure how to control it yet, but maybe if I figure that out, I’ll be able to stop her!”
I looked around and noticed that Frazie was no longer standing beside the rest of her family. She had to have snuck away when the conversation shifted to the curse. She may not have been ready to tell them the truth, but we needed her help.
“Hey, uh, Raz? Can you put me down? Gotta pee.”
“Really? Now?”
“Yes now! It’s been one thing after another today and I’ve been holding it for hours!”
“Ew! Ugh, fine, just go, but make it quick.”
He put me down, giving me my chance to go after Frazie. Thankfully, she didn’t go far. I found her sitting on her own, staring endlessly at the approaching cyclone as if entranced by it.
“Frazie, come on, we need you to help us with Maligula!”
She sighed, shaking her head. “Flint, I told you, I can’t. I’ll only make things worse.”
“You don’t know that for sure. And Raz thinks he might have Hydrokinesis powers too, but he doesn’t know how to control them. If the two of you work together, it might be enough to beat her!”
“It doesn’t matter. Either way, my parents go right back to being afraid of psychics, Dad casts Nona out of the family and gives up on using his powers for good, and Raz and I are back at square one. We’re all better off just running away. At least then none of us will get killed. And I won’t get written off as a monster.”
I tried to think of a way to convince her, but I wasn’t sure how. I got the sense she wouldn’t be willing to listen to my insistence that everything would turn out fine, and I wasn’t 100% sure myself of what the future held for us.
“I don’t know if it means anything, but I don’t think you’re a monster. Besides, it wasn’t her powers that made her become Maligula. Your Nona was manipulated and pushed to her breaking point. She was alone and vulnerable, and Gzar Theodore took advantage of that. But we can still help her. Things won’t go back to the way they were before, but maybe that’s a good thing. We’ll all get a second chance to start over. To be better.”
She smiled, holding her hand out for me to climb on.
“I’d like that.”
We returned to the group, and Donatello immediately pulled Frazie aside.
“Ah, there you are! There isn’t much time, we need you for the Devil’s Firehose!”
“What? Now?”
“Of course! How else are we supposed to get your brother to Nona?”
I leapt from Frazie’s hand onto Raz’s shoulder, and for a solid minute, he looked back and forth between the two of us.
“Why were you with my sister?”
“Not the main issue right now, let’s go!”
We headed to the edge of the cliff, and from there, Donatella took charge. I was surprised to see the youngest child, Queepie, was the strongman of the group. He easily held up the entire family as they stacked on top of each other.
Raz secured me in his pocket and began his climb up the tower of acrobats. On the way up, Augustus briefly smiled at me.
“Thank you for bringing her back, Flint.”
I gave him a quick nod, and Raz continued to climb, meeting Mirtala at the top.
“You ready?”
Raz and I exchanged a glance. The entire time we’d known each other, we knew we could never truly be ready. Neither of us expected to get to where we were back when he first showed up at camp. And yet, despite all of that, despite how unready we were, I knew we could handle it. We’d come so far, and there wasn’t a thing in the world that could stop us.
“As we’ll ever be.”
With that, Mirtala launched us straight into the storm, and with a swift throw of the psycho-portal, we went headfirst into Lucrecia’s mind.
Right away, I could see that her mental world looked very different in comparison to when we were in it before. The whole place was flooded, and there wasn’t a trace of the quilted forest or flea circus. Instead, we stood in a memory of Grulovia, destroyed in the flood. And in the center of it all was a statue of Maligula.
Raz panicked upon seeing it and PSI-Blasted it, releasing some stray thoughts. He used Mental Connection to pull us along the trail, and we witnessed the memory of his grandparents’ death.
“I really wish I could’ve met them…”
“I saw them in my Mom’s mind. I mean, I know it’s just a memory and it’s not really them, but, maybe she’ll let you see them too.”
He smiled. “I’d appreciate that. But first we need to save the family that’s still here.”
We returned to the main plaza, where Maligula’s massive glowing eyes glared down at us from behind the watery curtain. Taking a deep breath, Raz approached her.
“Um… Hi. I’m Razputin, your great nephew. Ah, I’m not saying I’m ‘great’ or anything, just… My grandma was your sister, and she wouldn’t want you to be evil anymore. I don’t either… because you’re still family.”
She went into a fit of maniacal laughter in response.
“Family? You’re just another unruly peasant that needs to be WASHED AWAY!!!”
This was it. The fight was on. I shifted to human form and stood beside Raz, taking on a defensive stance. I wasn’t sure how, but we had to beat her somehow. Everyone was counting on us. Our families, our friends, the world itself was at stake.
But whatever it took, we were gonna make sure the reign of Maligula would end once and for all.

headcanons about the aquatos when they're sick
I had the stomach flu earlier this week! it was not fun and sexy, it was awful and unsexy, but here's some headcanons to make some good out of a bad situation
Augustus: you can't keep this man in one place for long. he will keep trying to Get Up and Do Things while fully delirious and the rest of the family is trying to get him to get some rest. even in bed he'll usually find something to do with his hands, the model trains thing actually started this way
Donatella: drama queen. is this even a question? she will fully insist that she's dying and she has, like, a mild cold.
Lucrecia: the family tends to worry about her a lot if she's sick because she's old and seems fragile, but she always insists she's survived worse and they're all worrying too much. she likes the attention though. also she was exactly the same when she was younger and with the psychic 7 because ford was kind of a worrywart when it came to her. she found it endearing.
Dion: just, like, goes into a tent and refuses to talk to anyone. there is however at least one picture of, when he and raz were around 6 and 12 respectively, an under the weather dion asleep and hugging raz like a squishy toy while raz is just kinda sitting there. nobody will let him forget this even though he doesn't really remember it.
Frazie: it's really easy to tell if she isn't feeling well because she's usually so energetic and if she's not firing on all cylinders the energy goes out of her like a sad balloon. she does however have a bit of her mom's drama queen traits and will complain like hell.
Raz: I feel like I've seen a lot of people saying that Raz would be a kid who gets easily sick. (or at least he would catch lili's cold after the games. he kissed her full on the mouth! when she was sick! germs!) but also he's kind of the same as his dad and more than once he's gotten sick before an important psychonauts mission and continually tried to insist that no, he could go on the mission he's not sick while he's actively throwing up. it's never especially convincing to whoever's dealing with him at the moment.
Mirtala: pretty regular sick little kid. she tends to get high fevers with relatively mild illnesses, and she'll just ramble about the weirdest shit while she's completely delirious. Dona is trying to get her to take medicine and she's just there going "no!!!! if I don't run away the butterflies are going to eat my hair!" and Dona's just like "that's nice sweetheart"
Queepie: has barely gotten sick once since he was born. it's kind of scary.

Prompt: the "welcome to the family" dinner with Norma and frazie
Norma ran her hand through her hair for the sixth time in half the number of minutes. “Does my hair look okay?” She fiddled with her sweater. “How about my outfit?”
Frazie giggled and grabbed Norma’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Norma, Mia Topina, you’re being way too nervous for this.”
“It’s dinner with your parents, Kitten.” Norma retorted with a grimace. “I have a right to be nervous.”
“Norma, you’ve known me and the other Aquatos for almost a year now. “It’s not like we never had dinner together before.”
“I know, it’s just …when your dad came over the other day to invite me, I sensed …something about him. “
Frazie tilted her head. “Like what?”
“I don’t know, I didn’t read his mind.” Norma said with a shrug and a very matter-of-fact tone in her voice. “But he felt …giddy when I accepted. I think your family is up to something.”
Frazie giggled. “Oh, I know they’re up to something.”
Norma gave her girlfriend a suspicious look. “And you know this …?”
“Because they didn’t tell me anything.” Frazie answered with a big grin, which made Norma roll her eyes.
“And you really know nothing about what is gonna happen?”
“Norma, darling, love of my life, in all the time that you have known me, have I ever kept a surprise my family, or our friends had for you for myself?”
Norma grinned. “Not really. You either acted really weird which would make me suspicious and got to the bottom of things …or you just plainly told me.”
Frazie barked out a laugh, a heavenly sound to Norma, and threw her arm around her girlfriend. “And they didn’t tell me about today’s dinner at all, so …they are up to something.” She planted a kiss on Norma’s cheek. “But don’t worry, I’ll be there to protect you.”
“I know you will.” Norma replied, wrapping an arm around Frazie’s waist.
If you were a friend – or even better: a girl-or boyfriend of an Aquato – you always get the warmest welcome from the Aquato parents, but when Donatella pulled in Norma for a hug, the latter could sense …something from the prima ballerina. A sense of …excitement and anticipation. And she noticed that Frazie had sensed it as well. Ever since they’ve gotten together, their bond has gotten closer and closer, and Norma was convinced they were connected in more ways than one.
Like any other time that Norma went over to the Aquatos to share dinner, her knowledge of foreign culinary differences was put to the test. she wouldn’t even try to pronounce any of the dishes that were served to her. The one thing she knew about it …it was delicious and made with a lot of love. And maybe a bit too much salt, but she wisely kept that little titbit to herself, as not to insult her host.
But as time progressed, Norma was more and more than convinced that something was gonna happen and she didn’t need to have her Psychic powers to confirm her suspicions. Augustus and Donatella kept throwing each other these little smiles. Dion kept glancing at her and Frazie, having this weird little smirk on his lips. And then there was the fact that the youngest Aquato kids couldn’t keep giggling.
Eventually, Frazie let out a loud sigh. “Okay, I’ve reached a limit. What are you guys’ planning don’t try to pretend you’re not, because you guys are so obvious.”
Norma couldn’t help but to smirk at her girlfriend.
Donatella giggled. “Can’t get anything past you, eh, Francesca?” The latter blushed when Norma giggled at the use of her full name.
Augustus chuckled. “Well, we wanted to wait until after dinner, but this seems as good a time as any.” He turned to his wife and nodded. Donatella stood up, walked over to her and her husband’s tent for a short moment and soon emerged again, holding a small package, which she handed over to Norma.
Norma gave the package a long look, tilting it from side to side. “What’s this?”
Mirtala jumped on her chair. “It’s a gift. Open it! Open it!”
Dion pushed his littlest sister back on her seat. “Sit down before you crash the table again.”
The bespectacled psychic ripped the paper open …and gasped when she saw what was in it. Next to her, Frazie made a similar sound and Norma could feel combination of surprised happiness and warmth radiate from her girlfriend. Inside lay a beautiful silver-colored bracelet, decorated with inlayed gemstones.
“Is …is this real?” Norma asked softly, letting her fingers run over the material.
Augustus let out a chuckle. “Unfortunately, the whole thing is a replica, but it belonged to my family for a long, long time. My grandmother gave this to my mother when she was a child, and then she gave it to Nona when she moved to the States. She has kept it after Ford …you know.”
“Why are you giving it to me?” Norma asked. “This seems like too sentimental a gift to give away.”
“Nona gifted it to me a long, long time ago.” Donatella folded her hands on the table and gave Norma a warm smile. When me and Auggie had been dating for a year, she took me aside and slipped that bracelet on my wrist. And I had the same reaction as you, Norma. I was wondering why she would give me this, especially if it was so special for her and her family.”
“So, what did she say?” Norma asked.
Donatella gave a warm smile, stood up and made her way around the table towards Norma. “She said that ‘while she hadn’t been sure about me when Augustus and me started dating, I had certainly shown time and time again that her son had chosen the right person to be with. With the bracelet, she wanted to officially welcome me in the family.”
“Mom …” Frazie’s eyes turned big, and Norma felt her mouth go dry.
Donatella stopped in front of Norma and Frazie, planting a hand on their shoulders. “When Frazie told me she had feelings for you, Norma, I was …happy for her, but somewhat …apprehensive. She never had a partner before, and I didn’t want to see her heart break. And after you and her started officially dating, I kept a close eye on the two of you. I wanted to be sure.”
She planted a hand on Norma’s cheek. “But you have shown me time and time again that Frazie chose the right person to be with. In this last year, I have seen Frazie grow in more ways than one, and I am certain that you had a part to play in that. So, for that …” Donatella took the bracelet out of Norma’s hand and slipped it on her wrist. “Welcome to the family, Norma Natividad. We are so happy to have you here.”
The whole table started applauding, minus Frazie, who was just starting at Norma with a big smile on her face.
Norma felt her eyes water. “I ...I don’t know what to say. I …thank you.”
Donatella wrapped her arms around Norma and pulled her into a hug. “That’s more than enough.” Frazie quickly joined into the hug.
A comfortable silence fell over the scene.
Until Queepie broke it.
“So, does this mean that Frazie and Norma are going to marry anytime soon?”
And everyone broke into loud laughter.

Psychonautssss
PSYCHONAUTS ON MAIN LETS GOOOO (BC I USUALLY POST ON AQUATO-FAMILY-CIRCUS HAHA)
The first character I first fell in love with:
AUGUSTUS AQUATO YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS!! I'd always liked Raz of course, but when I was rewatching the first game to prep for the sequel the last like 20 minutes of it rocked me. the difference between Raz's perception of his dad vs the real deal who's just a well meaning if overprotective father captured me so violently and immediately it felt like I was being jostled around. Plus Augustus has such a cool design and his voice work is so soft yet gruff and kind. He's a delight. Idk what my opinion on the first game would be without him bc it's one of the strongest highlights in the emotions department.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
It's haaaard to say bc I just liked most of them off the bat but I do think I needed some time for Cassie O'Pia to grow on me. Her level was overstimmulating the first time I played it so I didn't rly appreciate how nice it looked or how cool her archetypes really were. Love her now tho, of course, bc I love all the old people psychics
The character everyone else loves that I don’t:
I Don't Care Much for the campers aside from Lili & Dogen. I think they're definitely fun, I've enjoyed a lot of fan work about the individual campers and do have favorites among the ones who Aren't Lili & Dogen (Clem & Crystal, Chloe) but they just don't really compel me much. Same goes for the interns but with them at least I can remember all their names and quirks off the top of my head (bc there's only 6 of them)
The character I love that everyone else hates:
I think Gristol is an interesting character, I think he's fun! I don't post abt him much bc I get the vibe ppl get annoyed about it? Which is fair, he sucks, I would hit him with a crowbar if he was real. but he's just kind of a pathetic guy once his plans fail. He's fun to talk about and theorize about what in the world could actually make him become a better person or at least have a change of mind like the other antagonists we've been inside the heads of.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer:
Error answer not found
The character I would totally smooch:
HOLLIS FORSYTHE CALL ME
The character I’d want to be like:
I wish I had the patience and chill attitude of Milla or the cool big showmanship of Helmut. The brightest and most colorful characters basically !!
The character I’d slap:
See: Gristol.
A pairing that I love:
Bob Zanotto and Helmut Fullbear are married and in love!! I love those guys so much it is absurd.
My first playthru experience of not expecting any gay content period was one of a kind.
the shift from "Oh Helmut's so obviously queercoded good for him. I hope He and his "Bobby" have some fun friendly guy pal thing going on"
to "Oh He and Bob were GAY gay"
to "ROBERT ZANOTTO YOUR GIANT WEDDING CAKE IS MAKING ME CRY" can not be replicated.
A pairing that I despise:
Not a big fan of Norma/Frazie! There's cute art of it for sure that I can appreciate but when I'm just alone w/my thoughts I feel like Frazie could do better and Norma needs to work on herself or else they'd have the most explosive teen drama break up ever and make it Everyone's Problem.

Note
give me your softest aquato headcanons 🤲
I've had this sitting in my box for days because i've been TRYING to cook up some soft hcs for you
Nona reads to the kids every night, no matter how old they get. it's a bonding activity :]
Frazie and Raz have a secret handshake that Dion has tried to learn for years but they're too sneaky about it. After the events of Psychonauts 2 he decides to blame the fact he hasn't learned their handshake on their fortune teller tricks.
Tala and Raz are VERY close, Raz is always looking out for her and probably gushes about her.
Augustus does not have a favorite child, he's never made them feel like he has one either. He loves his children and he loves to hear their thoughts, negative or positive. He's genuinely a very good dad <3

I keep thinking about augustus aquato because I know the game does the fakeout ‘dad isn’t as bad as son makes him out to be’ but also the games make a point of showing how wary his kids are of him and how they hide information from him even after ras insists he’s changed. Like… was ras’ perception of him in the meat circus really all that off? Considering psychonauts emphasises how really none of the campers have good parental figures it makes me think
