Then vs Now
Tagged by @oneiroy
If you're seeing this and you play ff14 and you HAVEN'T been tagged. I'm tagging you. This is a threat. :)
I started playing back in 2016????? but I bounced off of it a few times, started and stopped a bunch, and I don't have any screenshots from back then so. Here's the first screenshot of the Big Lady who would become Vermilion Rose that I have, from way back in August 2021, a little after I actually started getting back into the game:
vs earlier this month:
She's changed a lot as a character, and became uh. Much taller. And wider. And harrier. And buffer. And a bit fatter. Also: no longer paler than a ghost despite GROWING UP IN UL'DAH GIRLIE WHY WERE YOU SO PALE?!?!?
And her lore changed so, so, so much. Like more than I could fit here, reasonably.
She also changed her entire race a few times so here have the highlight reel of that below the cut
The Au Roe days
Andddd the Viera days:
Annnnd the last stop before arriving at RoElezen: BIG KITTY:

Black Wings
I transformed myself into a murder of ebon birds, their tenebrous wings battering the air as we ascended in a burst of dark feathers.
Up we leaped past heaps of bones to soar over rivers of blood whose garnet depths coursed in jagged veins to a distant sea. We followed their branching paths to this sanguine expanse where we saw, amid the haunted waves, great skeletal beasts sloshing and wailing in the wine-colored swells. Raven-swift, we darted across the raw expanse until basalt cliffs jutted into view.
Beneath this chorus of giant knives, the Vermilion Sea was churned to an agonized pinkish foam, the coast’s tidal orifices flecked like rabid mouths.
Further inland we flew, crossing carnal fields of gnawing flowers whose narcotizing fragrance pulled at our desires and begged us to dream.
There, the tired wind’s laborious breath carried us slowly over the fleshy blooms to a forest of pale trees. Their ruby leaves glistened in the wan light like drops of crimson misery as the smooth flesh of their twisted limbs winked with eyes that bore witness to our passing. Beyond them, we crossed wastes that wept with milky marshes. Pumping our wings in a storm of black pinions we rose higher above their troubling miasma and rode updrafts that bore us toward the crooked shadow of distant mountains. These cut through the haze like a great carnivore’s teeth and gave the impression of being swallowed. Onward we flapped, coming at last to circle about a titanic edifice of impossible antiquity. It gleamed gun-metal-black in the cool, distant light of an indiscernible sun. Dark and ominous the tower loomed, its massive length driven like a spear through the world. We entered the structure in a whispering rush through an organically shaped window. Within was a spiraling labyrinth of iniquitous geometries. Insane corridors of pulsating flesh whose membranous doorways opened onto rooms red and glistening as fresh wounds.
The great tower’s lofty vertex was shrouded in the tattered gauze of lamentable clouds, yet at its peak, which rose just above them, was an open court surrounded by monolithic pillars. Near its center was an august and ominous seat of angular stone.
Upon it sat a niveous vision, her dusky eyes glittering in the anemic light, her full, wet lips the color of blood.
She reclined luxuriously there upon her monolithic throne, bare as a sword save for torrents of jet hair that issued from her exquisite head to coil about her pallid face like dark serpents.
A shadow of my shape surged out of the vortex of black birds who swirled madly, a cacophonous maelstrom whose mass then coalesced before her. Having robed myself in human form, I stepped forward and knelt humbly before her.
“Rise”, she said. I did as she commanded and rose to my feet. “Speak,” she said, “tell me your heart.” Trembling with fear and lust, I spoke, “I have crossed worlds of pain and desire to seek you. I have known you in the night as my lover and my mother. I have known your body in the hollowness of my form and tasted your mouth in the spaces between lives. I would know you if I knew no other. You are the chrysalis of doom, the womb of eternity. I will only to will your will, my Queen.” She smiled and beckoned me forward, “Come here and kiss me”. A storm of joy and terror assailed my heart. Nervously, I stepped forward, suddenly viscerally aware of her presence and the beauty and power that she commanded. Just as light falls into black holes, I went to her. Our lips approached, and, meeting, formed a singularity. Then, she gave me the gift of her True Name, but I found I could not utter it. I wanted to sing it, so glorious it was, but I immediately choked as I tried to speak it aloud. Gasping violently, I grasped my throat and fretted with my tongue, but I was struck mute and cursed to die.
Despairing, I fell at her feet and struggled dismayed. Suddenly, the universe seemed to tumble in on itself, as if suddenly unmade, until there was nothing. Not anything. Just absolute, unnamable, unfathomable formlessness.
I was no more. No thought was self, no such concept was there, nor need of it in that perfect aphotic eternity.
And then, suddenly, violently, I was torn from her womb and born into a flowering, effulgent chaos.
In horror and awe, I worshipped her, and she loved me, and by us worlds became.
From us sprang gods, civilizations, and countless empires rose and fell, until at last, all that remained was the glittering abyss and its endless cold silence. I saw myself reflected in her eyes then and knew us to be the same: a luminous self-reflecting void, a dreaming abyss of eternally self-annihilating beauty and terror. As I opened my eyes, space and time expanded, and the darkness laughed as I was filled again with light. © JM Tiffany 2024

It's time to pick our August book for book club! Tumblr will vote, and the book club will then vote among the top three in Discord. If you’d like to join the book club, send me a message and I’ll send you a link to the discord! Keep an eye out for the other poll, and check out the books’ summaries under the cut!
Gwen & Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher
It’s been hundreds of years since King Arthur’s Reign. His descendant, Arthur, a future Lord and general gadabout, has been betrothed to Gwendoline, the quick-witted, short-tempered princess of England, since birth. The only thing they can agree on is that they despise each other.
They’re forced to spend the summer together at Camelot in the run up to their nuptials, and with 24 hours, Gwen has discovered Arthur kissing a boy and Arthur has gone digging for Gwen’s childhood diary and found confessions about her crush on the kingdom’s only lady knight, Bridget Leclair.
Realizing they might make better allies than enemies, they make a reluctant pact to cover for each other, and as things head up at the annual royal tournament, Gwen is swept off her by her knight and Arthur takes an interest in Gwen’s royal brother. Lex Croucher’s Gwen & Art Are Not in Love is chock full of sword-fighting, found family, and romantic shenanigans destined to make readers fall in love.
Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis
It’s bad enough waking up in a half-destroyed evil wizard’s workshop with no eyebrows, no memories, and no idea how long you have before the Dread Lord Whomever shows up to murder you horrible and then turn your skull into a goblet or something.
It’s a lot worse when you realize that Dread Lord Whomever is… you.
Gav isn’t really sure how he ended up with a castle full of goblins, or why he has a princess locked in a cell. All he can do is play along with his own evil plan in hopes of getting his memories back before he gets himself killed.
But as he realizes nothing – from the incredibly tasteless cloak adorned with flames to the aforementioned princess – is quite what it seems, Gav must face up to all the things the Dread Lord Gavrax has done. And he’ll have to answer the hardest question of all – who does he want to be?
A high fantasy farce featuring killer moat squid, toxic masculinity, an evil wizard convocation, and a garlic festival. All at once. All in all, Dread Lord Gavrax has had better weeks.
A Magical Girl Retires by Park Seolyeon
Twenty-nine, depressed, and drowning in credit card debt after losing her job during the pandemic, a millennial woman decides to end her troubles by jumping off Seol’s Mapo Bridge.
But her suicide attempt is interrupted by a girl dressed in white—her guardian angel. Ah Roa is a clairvoyant magical girl on a mission to find the greatest magical girl of all time. And our protagonist just may be that special someone.
But the young woman’s initial excitement turns to frustration when she learns being a magical girl in real life is much different than how it’s portrayed in stories. It isn’t just destiny—it’s work. Magical girls go to job fairs, join trade unions, attend classes. And for this magical girl there are no special powers and no great perks, and despite being magical, she still battles with low self-esteem. Her magic wand . . . is a credit card—which she must use to defeat a terrifying threat that isn’t a monster or an intergalactic war. It’s global climate change. Because magical girls need to think about sustainability, too.
Park Seolyeon reimagines classic fantasy tropes in a novel that explores real-world challenges that are both deeply personal and universal: the search for meaning and the desire to do good in a world that feels like it’s ending. A fun, fast-paced, and enchanting narrative that sparkles thanks to award-nominated Anton Hur, A Magical Girl Retires reminds us that we are all magical girls—that fighting evil by moonlight and winning love by daylight can be anyone’s game.
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
Shiori’anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted. But it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.
A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.
Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard to marry. And she must embrace the magic she’s been taught all her life to forswear—no matter what the cost.
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas
“Only the most powerful and honorable semidioses get chosen. I’m just a Jade. I’m not a real hero.”
As each new decade begins, the Sun’s power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the chaotic Obsidian gods at bay. Sol selects ten of the most worthy semidioses to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The winner carriers light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all—they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body melted down to refuel the Sun Stones, protecting the world for another ten years.
Teo, a seventeen-year-old Jade semidiós and the trans son of the goddess of birds, isn’t worried about the Trials . . . at least, not for himself. His best friend, Niya is a Gold semidiós and a shoo-in for the Trials, and while he trusts her abilities, the odds of becoming the sacrifice is one-in-ten.
But then, for the first time in over a century, the impossible happens. Sol chooses not one, but two Jade competitors. Teo, and Xio, the thirteen-year-old child of the god of bad luck. Now they must compete in five trials against Gold opponents who are more powerful and better trained. Worst of all, Teo’s annoyingly handsome ex-best friend and famous semidiós Hero, Aurelio is favored to win. Teo is determined to get himself and his friends through the trials unscathed—for fame, glory, and their own survival.
The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
A forgotten history. A secret network of women. A legacy of poison and revenge. Welcome to the Lost Apothecary…
Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientele. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.
Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Carline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive.
Vermilion by Molly Tanzer
Gunslinging, chain smoking, Stetson-wearing Taoist psychopomp, Elouise Lou” Merriwether might not be a normal 19-year-old, but she’s too busy keeping San Francisco safe from ghosts, shades, and geung si to care much about that. It’s an important job, though most folks consider it downright spooky. Some have even accused Lou of being more comfortable with the dead than the living, and, well… they’re not wrong. When Lou hears that a bunch of Chinatown boys have gone missing somewhere deep in the Colorado Rockies she decides to saddle up and head into the wilderness to investigate. Lou fears her particular talents make her better suited to help placate their spirits than ensure they get home alive, but it’s the right thing to do, and she’s the only one willing to do it. On the road to a mysterious sanatorium known as Fountain of Youth, Lou will encounter bears, desperate men, a very undead villain, and even stranger challenges. Lou will need every one of her talents and a whole lot of luck to make it home alive…

Obligatory Horseshoe Bend photo.
At Marble Canyon near Page, Arizona.
Update: @amatkins reblogged my post and noted that Horseshoe Bend is actually located in Glen Canyon. Marble Canyon begins further downstream. Notations on USGS topographic maps seem to indicate that Marble Canyon begins at Lees Ferry, at the confluence of the Colorado and Paria Rivers. I'm grateful for the correction. Whenever I'm in canyon country I like to try to relate what I am seeing with John Wesley Powell's account of his 1869 expedition down the Colorado River.
On August 4 he wrote this about this stretch of the river:
"To-day the walls grow higher and the canyon much narrower. Monuments are still seen on either side; beautiful glens and alcoves and gorges and side canyons are yet found. After dinner we find the river making a sudden turn to the northwest and the whole character of the canyon changed. The walls are many hundreds of feet higher, and the rocks are chiefly variegated shales of beautiful colors – creamy orange above, then bright vermilion, and below, purple and chocolate beds, with green and yellow sands. ... At night we stop at the mouth of a creek coming in from the right, and suppose it to be the Paria. ... Here the canyon terminates abruptly in a line of cliffs, which stretches from either side across the river." From The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons, 1875

What W2 Wrote in 2024
tl;dr: Not much!
January
[crickets]
February
Ideal Pairing (@shousetsubangbang) Sexy times in a wine cellar. I wrote this in, what, a day? And it shows.
March
Nope.
April
Heavyweight (DMBJ, Pangzi/Wu Xie) A Pangzi Birthday Exchange 2024 piece for @scaredysap, with some romantic face-punching.
never love someone who could love someone like me (@shousetsubangbang) The only good thing I wrote for SSBB this year, and it's a long prequel to an even longer story.
May
The Part Where You Kiss Him (Legend of Fei, Li Yan/Yang Jin/Ying Hecong) This is that part, cute teen threesome and all.
A Ten-Course Banquet Made For (and With) Love (Otoko Meshi) I wrote this piece expecting a total of three people would appreciate it, and behold, that is what has happened. More people should watch this silly show, is what I'm saying.
June
Nothing Under My Skin But Light (Mystic Nine, Fo Ye/Er Ye) Mixing movie and show canons for sexy times backstage at the Changsha opera house.
The Jewel Thief (Blood of Youth, Xiao Se/Wuxin) Xiao Se is the party bicycle, and it's Wuxin's turn for a somewhat more romantic ride.
Odysseus Didn’t Know What He Was Missing (@shousetsubangbang) I mean, you can't say I didn't go dirty with this one. It's pretty much just solid homoeroticism start to finish.
July
The Other End of the Line (Heaven and Hell: Soul Exchange, Hidaka/Mochizuki) This was unfortunately the point where I burned out on Small Fandom Summer '24, but at least I got some uncomfortably sexy bodyswap porn in there.
August
Paint the Town Vermilion (@shousetsubangbang) A tale about unintentionally going undercover in a gay bar, which was saved by having a cute narrator, but was again very rushed.
September
Nada.
October
Something Else (@shousetsubangbang) A tale about meeting a familiar stranger at a bar. Guess what? This was rushed too! Are you seeing a pattern?
November
Zip.
December
Nothing.
So yeah, this is the first SSBB issue I've missed in years. I tried, I really did, but it seemed like idea after idea just flamed out while thing after thing piled on elsewhere. And in the end, there wasn't anything left to say.
Fingers crossed that 2025 will be gentler on me, and I will in turn be gentler on myself.

hello wonderful mutual, may i inquire what shaman king is?
you've triggered an unskippable cutscene be prepared. was it me calling hana kentacoded that did it for you
shaman king is uh... certainly something
editor's note I go on about the history of the shaman king media franchise for like. way too long and I'm not deleting it so. plot summary starts after the flowers anime image
it started out as a shonen adventure manga created by a mangaka named hiroyuki takei which ran from 1998 to 2004, where it somehow Ate Shit And Died, leaving the manga ending unfinished somehow (idk I wasn't there)
it got its first anime adaptation in 2001
this anime had 64 episodes and covered a complete story. hey goose but if it aired in 2001 and the manga ate shit in 2004 how did they- they didn't. they made shit up. remember kanata dying on the cross? take that extend it to cover half the story and make it FUCKING AWESOME
shaman king 2001 has this impeccable Vibe to it that I really love (the only other thing I can think of with similar impeccable Vibes is sk8). a lot of fans prefer this anime to the manga and I can't blame them it sure has its perks. it also has its downsides. which is mostly terrible dated character designs and diverging from the manga if you're not into that.
I love this show though this is what I rewatch when I want any old shaman king in my spare time
but what's this? a whisper on the wind? that's right baby
SHAMAN KING KANZENBAN MANGA
that's right- between 2008 and 2009 the entire manga was reprinted to get its "true ending", including redraws of some panels
later in 2012 BAM SHAMAN KING FLOWERS
yes there's a full mainline sequel. flowers itself ended in 2014 when the magazine it was in Ate Shit and Died. the story was continued in another manga, The Super Star, before last year the magazine publishing TSS, say it with me now,
Ate Shit and Died (yeah Takei has real bad luck with that)
and then, just a few years ago...
BAM SHAMAN KING 2021 REBOOT ANIME
finally, an anime adaptation of the kanzenban manga, true ending including... this is where I show up. finally! I needed something to watch on a long car ride in august 2021 and happened to download the first eight episodes on netflix, a decision which would have no repercussions on my life philosophies or me as a person (lies)
there are pretty mixed feelings about this anime overall (the pacing goes fucking BRRRRRRR that's for sure) but I can credit that thing with getting me into shaman king and restructuring my brain so it has a special place in my heart
(it's also what I first get people to watch when they agree to shaman king with me. you should really read kanzenban instead because it's better)
lastly there's the flowers anime airing right now
(yay excitingggggg)
and like. soooooo many more sequel prequel and spinoff manga. and also all of takei's works (I'm planning to read ultimo soon because someone said that's where the spirit based on the vermilion bird came from and that has a common ancestor with allen sugasano so I'm going) oh shit and funkuro/funbari chronicles the mobile game that is either closed or on its way out. and so much more
I'm not going to explain every one of them because I realized you probably wanted. a plot summary. so
copy pasted from my mankin slideshow:
"laid-back Asakura Yoh is a shaman, someone with a connection to the afterlife. He participates in the Shaman Fight, a tournament to determine the next god. Hao, a mysterious and overwhelmingly strong shaman, wants to use the powers gained from becoming a god to wipe out humanity. Shenanigans ensue across multiple continents and the boundaries of life and death."
like I said before it's a shonen adventure manga so it follows a lot of tropes, but I think it does them pretty well and in its own way. if you read through the entire mainline manga (kanzenban, flowers, and tss) it's clear takei has a lot to say through his work and he's pretty explicit about his view of the world (shoutout to evil triangle who invented capitalism)
takei's writing and research can be kinda iffy at times and I would never say his work is for everyone but I love it to bits and it has really helped me out over the years
my personal favourite pieces of shaman king media (besides kanzenban) are:
Red Crimson (spinoff of the main sequels following an adult legacy cast, brilliant story about love and grief except for the Horrors)
& a Garden (prequel spinoff about the hanagumi witches, side characters from the first manga)
2001 anime (explained this one already)
if this has interested you go read the kanzenban manga and then come back for sequel recommendations
need more information? I got you
my beginner's shaman king slideshow (if you're reading this within an hour of posting you might see me updating it dw about that)
the patch cafe fansite which has up to date news about the entire series
there's also the funbari hill discord's tumblr account, which reblogs a lot of great shaman king stuff. everyone there is lovely and it's a great community (it's actually run by a mutual of mine hi frost 👋)
I ALMOST FORGOT THE SEQUELS FANSITE WHOOPS (run by an incredible artist and has some fun information about the sequels)
please tell me if you want clarification or more specifics I'm bad at explaining this concisely
#shaman king#koi don't ask me how a cult classic shonen manga fan like myself wound up in the twink rapper project fandom#I don't know either#hope you enjoyed my massive infodump

30. Concern
For: @prongsfoot-microfic Month: August 2023 AO3: Link Notes: Fantasy AU (unrelated to previous Fantasy AUs) in which James is a paladin, Sirius is an assassin and Dumbledore is in charge. Sirius isn't actually in this, but it's very much about him.
James Potter is a Paladin, as were his father and mother before him, as his forebears have been for generations: Sworn to the service of the Crown and the banner of the Vermilion Wings, he has lived every one of his nineteen years with the same unshakable faith in his oath with which he approaches everything in his life. Despite his young age, James has acquitted himself well, earning the trust of the lowliest labourer and the appreciation, if not the well-wishes, of the highest-born noble, and he has never once had cause for doubt.
That changes today, and he finds himself staring blankly at the High Magister, mouth slightly agape in disbelief, while the High Magister regards him solemnly over half-moon lenses and waits for James to regain his senses.
“There must be some mistake,” James protests, brow furrowed, so much at a loss that his usually keen wit has abandoned him. “Sirius is--” James halts himself in mid-sentence, recalling where is and who he's addressing and who they're speaking of, and he swallows hard and tries again.
“Executor Black has earned his place, a thousand times over,” James says instead, his expression schooled into neutral respect, though he can't quite control the slow flexing of his gloved hands. “If you'll excuse me for saying so, High Magister, it makes no sense to doubt his loyalty now.”
“It is not his loyalty I question, Paladin,” the High Magister replies, calm and sombre in his place of honour, “but his blood. We know that Executor Black has been Marked... or do you deny it?”
James flushes slightly, managing the barest shake of his head: “I... do not, High Magister,” James answers stiffly, because it has been three days since the black star appeared on Sirius' skin, three days of James trying to pretend that he hadn't seen its stark outline at the base of Sirius' spine, three days in which they'd felt as if their time together was rushing out from beneath them like sand from a shattered hourglass.
“Then you know what it means,” the High Magister says, “and what must be done.” James has always seen the High Magister as a kind second father, remembers playing in the Inner Sanctum as a child and escaping with little more than a mild rebuke under the High Magister's twinkling eyes; but they do not twinkle now, and James knows that there will be no reprieve this time.
“Do your duty, Paladin,” the High Magister intones, and there is no warmth in his voice, only the expectation that James will fulfil the oath he took when he swore to place the well-being of the kingdom above all else; including life, including love. “That is your only concern.”
“I...” James stops, then bows his head. “I hear and obey, High Magister,” James confirms, and his lips are numb as they shape the words, his voice that of a stranger's even to his own ears.
“For the Greater Good, Executor Black must die.”

The federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is proposing to spray toxic insecticides within treasured and significant landscapes of the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona to kill native grasshoppers.
The areas being considered include portions of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, and the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.
“This is a dangerous plan that could kill creatures that are key to northern Arizona’s unique biodiversity, which these national monuments were designated to protect,” said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “The federal government needs to stop downplaying the extinction crisis and back off its reckless plan to smother biodiversity hotspots with toxic pesticides.”
One out of every 10 plant species in the Colorado Plateau region is found nowhere else on Earth.
The agency's draft environmental assessment omits mention of the national monuments and unique species and habitats they were designated to protect. These species include rare bees, butterflies and other creatures found nowhere else, like the Kaibab monkey grasshopper and House Rock Valley chisel-toothed kangaroo rat, specifically named in the August proclamation establishing the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument.
APHIS oversees and funds the application of multiple pesticides on rangelands to prevent native grasshoppers and Mormon crickets from competing with livestock for forage.
The proposed insecticides — carbaryl, diflubenzuron and chlorantraniliprole — are indiscriminate. In addition to the grasshoppers the agency is targeting, the insecticides can also kill bees, moths and other insects. Spraying can harm entire ecosystems by disrupting pollination and can harm populations of birds, reptiles and mammals who feed on grasshoppers and insects.
Although grasshoppers and Mormon crickets can be locally abundant from time to time, native plants and other wildlife evolved with these cycles. Introducing pesticides to eliminate native grasshoppers is a shortsighted, quick fix that fails to consider the complex interrelationships within these delicate ecosystems.
The agency’s draft analysis shows that it has failed to consult with affected Tribes with ties to the Grand Canyon area. The Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition, which proposed the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument, includes members of the Havasupai Tribe, Hopi Tribe, Hualapai Tribe, Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Las Vegas Tribe of Paiutes, Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Shivwits Band of Paiutes, Navajo Nation, San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, Yavapai-Apache Nation, Zuni Tribe and Colorado River Indian Tribes.
“It’s so important that APHIS honor the promise made to work together with Tribal nations to protect the sacred spaces and resources within the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Monument when it was established less than six months ago,” said Sharon Selvaggio, pesticide program specialist with The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. “We call on the agency to protect natural systems on Tribal and public lands by employing nonchemical management that allows humans and wildlife to thrive.”
In March 2023 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published a draft biological opinion from NOAA Fisheries showing that carbaryl is likely to jeopardize 37 species protected under the Endangered Species Act, and harm 36 designated critical habitats.
While Arizona is not home to any of the species named in that report, the findings show the extreme harm carbaryl poses to endangered fish and other species.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is charged with protecting endangered plants and animals, has not yet completed a proper analysis of the potential harms from the APHIS proposal. Potentially vulnerable endangered species in Arizona include Chiricahua leopard frogs, western yellow-billed cuckoos, Gila chub, black-footed ferrets and Siler pincushion cacti.
APHIS is accepting comments on the proposal until 4 p.m. MST on Feb. 2.
