Another question has came up on me while I was coloring (finally aughhh). How do you shade hair? Without it looking unnatural?

Hello and welcome back! I'm glad my previous advice helped! That is a difficult question as I do admit it is a bit challenging to me as well. It is guesswork + studying references, adjusting tid bits until it looks right, my own process relies on a trial and error approach.

Therefore, I suggest you pick some pieces you like where you find the hair gorgeous, and figuring out how the artist does it, or how might they do it, per active learning principles. Try to deduce it. While the following guide can be good for your starting concepts too, it's important to adapt it to your style and preferences. And I even encourage you to go against it, as creativity thrives on experimentation.

That said, I'll guide you through my own thought process, however. (With a quick Ratio sketch, because I really love to shade his hair; fluffy hair is very forgiving.)

Let's start off here (I'll be skipping the black and white part for simplicity's sake from the previous guide. I'll also be using a white environment with a pale overlight):

For highlights, I begin laying down a Glow Dodge layer with a hard brush that doesn't have full opacity, and draw a halo-like shape. After that, I refine the shape by erasing parts of it with a rough eraser to get the desired effect.

Alternative to the Glow Dodge layer, you can use pure white, or other layer types such as Lighten, Screen, Add and Overlay, etc.

In the following pictures, note that I adjust the layer's opacity freely.

Above, I simply blended it a bit to my own liking.

With an airbrush I softly start introducing shadows (Multiply layer, dark purple/blue color).

Then, I start introducing sharper shadows in a separate layer.

You can use a lasso tool for this to map out a jagged like shape which should remind you of mountains. You can blend this out too at certain segments.

(Sidetrack: if you feel like, I suggest reading up on the balance of hard and soft edges in painting, the topic is very interesting and I am still trying to grasp it as well, yet I find it immeasurably useful. This can come in handy upon rendering principles. A very skillful master of it is the artist Yuming Li.)

Furthermore, I add reflections. I've used a Lighten layer with a subtle blue color. As this is subtle, I want to point it out that it appears on the lower parts.

For a final touch, I pick out the skin's color and airbrush, shift the picked color to a more saturated one and apply it near his face/to the bangs, with an airbrush.

For the fundamentals of hair shading I usually wrap it up here and go off to rendering. I use a painterly brush to do this and pay attention to the jagged shape I mentioned earlier. The brush I use is already tilted, so it's easy to manipulate to make such shapes.

Additionally, I experiment with Overlay, Multiply (or any!) layers with either airbrushes or hardbrushes— as I said there isn't a specified way of doing this. Go wild; for such is the nature of hair. Add any shapes or lines you find appealing, introduce new colors from the environment nearby too to make it moredynamic and interesting as well.

Including astray curved lines to simulate how hair flows also builds to the hair-like quality. I also prefer to use it closer to the silhouette of my character as it adds further detailing and a fluffier look in the end!

Attempt to render each strand according to this diagram in mind, note the parabole-like(?) shape for the light, and note standard 3d spheric shading for shadows.

I do deeply believe he is the type of person who would always go for the friends-to-lovers trope. Like maybe you haven't been his best friend, but something close to that, or it's the total opposite strangers to lovers. I feel like either he has to have a serious deep bond with the person that he is crushing on or he simply just finds you super attractive, though I think he is way too shy to make the first move when it comes to a stranger.

Sean would definitely take you on a lot of unofficial dates, like going to the movies or going to a fancy restaurant. There would be a ton of flirty banter, but he just wouldn't be too obvious with it at first. Kind of like a dip my feet in the cold water first type of guy. He wants to know if you are feeling the same before diving straight into something.

(also if you are not getting along with Daniel or his father it is a no-go for him)

So either he would totally wait for you to make the first step or he would start with gentle touches first. I feel like Sean's love language would be physical touch or words of affirmation. He is the type of person who would gently touch your cheek or chin, I am also heavy on the waist touching with him. Like you are in his way and he would scoot you over by softly holding onto your waist or giving you hugs from behind.

However, if he is the person to confess his feelings first I think it would go somehow like this: In the days leading up to his confession, you might notice Sean acting a bit more thoughtful and introspective than usual. He’d be working on something in secret, which he’d occasionally hint at but keep under wraps. Sean would choose a meaningful location for his confession, perhaps a place where you both have shared special memories or somewhere that holds significance to him. It could be a secluded spot he discovered, a favorite park, or even just a cozy corner in his room.

Sean would begin by presenting you with a piece of his art, something he’s been working on just for this moment. It might be a portrait of you, a drawing of a special memory you both share or a piece that symbolizes your relationship. After giving you the artwork, Sean would take your hands in his, looking deeply into your eyes. hi. I really adore your lineart and the way you draw characters (human or otherwise). There’s a nice softness to it that makes each panel feel special. I also adore your use with a purple-centric color pallet and how you emphasize certain parts with how intense the color can be. Expression? Wonderful. Delicious. I love the comedic expressions you can whip out while also being able to make such emotional expressions. The way you draw hair is also so fun and unique!! So I was reading your Athena & Apollo headcanons and it made me think of a hc to help fill a (very mild but infinitely frustrating) plot hole in the books! (Well, plot hole is stretching it, it’s not even a plot dent, more like a detail inconsistency that affects Literally Nothing but it has driven me crazy since I read mcga)

The detail in question: Why are all of Athena’s kids blonde and (possibly) curly-haired, when Annabeth is said to get her hair from her dad and Athena has never actually appeared as a blonde? (Aside from that time in Sea of Monsters but tbf that was a hallucination so possibly not accurate). It’s bothered me for a while, because Athena doesn’t Do romance and therefore it wouldn’t really make sense for her to have a Type, right? Why would someone attracted to mortal’s intellect care about their hair color? I guess I just figured she’d been blonde for a while and decided to go brunette later, but the “dumb blonde” stereotype has been around for a long time, having been especially prevalent since the ‘50s, and I can’t imagine Athena to want to be seen as anything less than the smartest person in the room.

But then your hcs got me thinking… we know that Athena is very proud, but she’s also deeply insecure. Like, “she got made fun of for playing the flute One Time by two goddesses known to be bitchy that she already did not get along with and threw it into the woods with a curse and refused to pick it up again (until Apollo coaxed her to)” insecure. And she doesn’t have very many friends, does she? Apollo’s kind of all she has, other than mortals, but her relationship with mortals is that of a devotee and a god. Reverence is not the same thing as connection. But Apollo, who is in a similar boat to her, makes connections so easily! Even at his worst, he makes people like him against both his and their will. Even his relationships with his devotees were… well they were messy lbr but they were also very genuine, most of the time. There was something more, there.

So, all this rambling to say: what if the reason Athena’s kids all look so similar is because Athena chose to look like Apollo? I don’t think she chose to act like him, but. I dunno. Maybe she thought mortals would like her better if she looked more like her pretty, popular brother. She’s always had to listen to people, mortals and immortals alike, praise her brother for just about everything while she had to fight for even a scrap of respect. Maybe she thought she could absorb at least a little of that something that makes people genuinely like him. That something that draws her to him again and again. Maybe it’s like armor, pulling on her brother’s face. If they don’t like her, it’s not because it’s her, right? Apollo’s been driving everybody crazy lately, anyway… (and yet, he’s still more beloved than her…)

And that ALSO feeds into my preexisting headcanons about Apollo looking like a Chase, which is fun!! (I think his modern godly form looks more similar to Magnus but Lester has a face/hair texture that is really, really similar to annabeth’s! So when he bashes the two forms together he makes the two of them look even more like siblings because he’s basically a bridge between the two of them, lol. But his old godly form looked strikingly similar to Annabeth in a lot of ways… hmmmm.)

Anyway it’s kind of a convoluted hc and once again falls into the “Apollo is the specialist little guy in the WORLD” mindset but I!!! Just like it!!!! When siblings are weird and messy!!! And admiration gets mixed up with jealousy and genuine affection is twisted by circumstance and time!!! And identity issues!!! And loneliness!!! It’s latching on to someone and having them be your whole world when you know that you’re just a small part of theirs!!! AUGHHH. Weird fucked up Olympus dynamics my belovedddd

21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?

MY OCS ATM. AND THE VERSIONS OF EVERYONE FOR MY STAR TREK AU. I put a lot of effort into them and making them feel real and understandable within their story!

Harland is super fun to write cause it's a chance to explore a world and characters I love while being respectful of the canon of the game, but seeing what aspects I can go further into with Harland. And all the snippets of Abe and Orc I've started writing is just AUGHHH THEY'RE COMING ALIVE!!!!

22. Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?

Magland... Abe and Orc...... There's some I want to write, like Leon x Ada or Hylink (again.... Sigh....) that I think I'll have fun with. I just like writing pairings that have interesting dynamics or bounce off each other in silly ways

Ahhh man. It's hard to say cause I feel like I haven't read anything consistently enough lately to say for sure. I can say when I was younger I really loved CS Lewis and as a teen I really enjoyed what little I'd read by Niel Shusterman, and maybe throw in Adachitoka for good measure

SCI-FI / THRILLER ALL THE WAYYYYY BABBBEEEYYY

I like other stuff like fantasy and drama and whatever too ofc but like. NOTHING QUITE SCRATCHES THE ITCH LIKE THESE TWO, ESP IF THEY'RE A PAIR.

Sci-fi is soooo broad and fun, it's interesting when it's low concept or high concept and I like that it's so easy to inject philosophical dilemmas into the bones of the story and leave you thinking, and I like how interesting it is when you can draw parallels to current life (it's especially interesting seeing retro future sorta stories, both the fun aesthetics of 90s shit but also just seeing what people thought the scientific advances could be the further back you go, and seeing things that used to be sci-fi become just sci)

AND THRILLERRRRS.... I find them more interesting and scary than horror, though I've often been mistaken for a horror head even tho I feel like I don't watch horror that much... (Unless it's overlapped with thriller I guess lol) Idk I just find that the kind of stories you can tell when you drag out the tension and let the scares settle in to the atmosphere instead of demanding attention front and centre affect me more. I like when there's some kind of conspiracy or danger to work around and it gets more horrific with worse implications the further you claw into it. I want the fear to linger in my mind instead of only speaking to my body (think like how a jump scare isn't really scary other than startling you, vs something that actually unnerves you and gets worse the more you think about it)

I guess all that to say. I like thinking about things and want the story to haunt me with everything it's got. I want to still be thinking about it years later cause there was something in there that lingered....

"Well aren't you just a bundle of contradiction." Flea mused.

"Pardon?" Harland asked.

Flea sauntered up to Harland, circling around him as he spoke.

"A friend to both sides of the war." He swatted Harlands hair from his shoulder, watching it fall as he avoided eye contact. "A pacifist whose work has made weapons."

Harland opened his mouth to defend himself, but flea dragged his finger across his chest. Harland couldn't help but get distracted as the general's nail tugged at his collar.

"I don't make weapons." He said, unable to hide the slight waver in his voice.

Flea pouted at him condescendingly. "You may not make them, but would they exist without you?"

Harland clenched his jaw.

"Even when you fight-"

"I don't fight." Harland interrupted.

"EVEN WHEN YOU FIGHT," Flea continued, "you are offensively defensive."

Flea smiled, enjoying Harland struggling to keep himself composed. He stood in front of him, tracing his jawline. "What a contradictory mess of a man…”

30. Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet

Oh man there's so much. I will say it's my screenplay, Misled Millionaire, that was an integral part to making me wanna study film. I've planned so much without it feeling ready and I knew I needed to learn more to do the idea justice, and I still have hand written notes from 2019 that I kept, and even found the original quick note I wrote in my phone all the way back when I just had it as a silly little idea:

Reclusive millionaire searching for new life purpose, unlikely friendship with a fake psychic.

The story has changed quite a bit, but the gist of it is that a younger entrepreneur type is feeling lost and lacking despite ticking off so many boxes that should mean he's successful and happy. While he tries to find himself, he grows dependant on his new friendship with a little old lady who gives him fortunes, until one day he can't find her when he really needs her. When I've made progress on other stories, I'll write the screenplay and hopefully direct it myself! So no stealing my ideas!!

To be totally honest with you cleg there is nothing going on here visually, other then that I made the cake pink/strawberry but that’s kinda it, originally I intended to draw a background behind him and have Polly standing there with a hand on his shoulder but then I thought “no, Basil feels alone” and corrected the vibes to depict that better (which was also when it went from being a comic to a video)

Although disregarding the candle thing ALLLL of your observations are correct

In all honesty I can see a world were Basil reconnected with his parents, I can see a world where he wasn’t bitter, where he could grow to love them even despite everything before… if only they’d been at grandmothers deathbed with him, but no. Instead they place a surrogate in their stead, did the bare minimum of paying someone else to give the care they did not want to. Basil could’ve got over his own mistreatment, but to leave grandma? Babcia? Alone as she dies? Thinking her daughter came for her when she didn’t? Leaving him and him alone to bear that grief and play that role to diminish his loved ones suffering just a small bit?

That is the moment for him where that relationship becomes unsalvageable, to shove the burden of death unto another is the cruelest form of neglect, even if it doesn’t feel that way to the perpetrator, even of they remain apathetic to the dying and the one who must take their stead alike

And I VERY MUCH agree that his grandmother was the only thing that kept Basil from attempting sooner, in my idea of things he’d been miserable to the point of self harm for nearly two years leading up to it, not long after Polly showed up… I think that was when it really hit him that grandma was dying, maybe before that when he could mostly handle things and she could still be active enough t take care of herself and Basil maybe then Basil could rationalize that she was just old… that she just had bad days sometimes, rationalize that it was okay that some days she was forgetful or slept until nighttime, she’d be better again wouldn’t she?… they were just.. bad days, everyone has bad days, right?

It isn’t a coincidence that Basil tried to give his photo album to Sunny before knowing he was moving away, he was already planning to do it then, Sunny leaving was just another hit of emotional turmoil to plague him until the end

Oh and lastly AUGH the thing about people seeing old photos of Basil’s mom and thinking it was him is so real actually, I bet Basia (Basil’s grandma because remember how I came up with a name for her) kept a lot of photographs of herself and Basil’s mom (who I’ve yet to name) around the house, and I can very vividly imagine Kel or Aubrey when they were younger curiously asking why a photo of Basil and his mom was in black and white, and little Basil coming over to see the picture of his grandma holding his mom as a toddler and having to explain that “no, that isn’t me, the baby in the photo is my mom”

And I think that plays a lot into Basil being such a complicated character gender-wise too, everyone has their headcanons but in my view and mostly in canon Basil is just a very feminine young boy, but that makes it worse doesn’t it? That his hair is longer then a boy’s usually is, that he would wear a flower in his hair, that he might even wear a ruffled blouse or a pretty sunhat with a big bow- I wonder if he feels bad about enjoying those things… it makes him all the more like her, not to mention it gets him bullied… even if it’s simple things, things a boy shouldn’t be ashamed of…

Anyway! Final comment: the rusty lake games and their music SLAP birthday piano, out of tune is so ingrained in my memory, watch me end up using other songs from the series for more Basil angst/Marzenie stuff PFTTT ANYHOWWWWW

Omg!! I actually did something in time for the event it was meant for!! Anyway, yeah here let me throw some depressing basil content at you-

He makes me so sad honestly … also! The song here is “birthday piano, out of tune”, it’s from the soundtrack of rusty lake: birthday, a game from perhaps the most underrated puzzle game series of all time… rusty lake is great and it thought the vibes were a good match for this post

sooo ruth and i watched the first hxh movie holla

me as soon as we’re done w/the yorknew arc: OH FUCKY ITS ANIME MOVIE TIME

i love anime movies. theyre so often Entertaining As Hell, and also Not Very Good. its a very fun intersection 

overall this movie slots pretty easily into that category. it was a good time but nothing revolutionary. which is ok! and that makes sense bc its not canon apparently 

this movie was basically the ‘killua and kurapika have Trauma(tm)��� movie lmao 

we open w/killua having a trauma dream abt illumi, rehashing the stuff we saw in the hunter exam arc....we see this a few more times in the movie, and it really drives home how killua is still rlly scared of illumi and kinda just goes into a dissociative trauma state whenever illumi is around (even fake doll illumi or dream illumi, in this movie). poor kid :( :( 

regrettably tho ruth and i agree that illumis outfit in this movie was pretty sexy 

ok that whole beginning part where kurapikas eyes get stolen happens SO fast hvbfhdjshfsk its like ok guess thats the status quo for this movie!

also kurapika saying theyre gonna find someone who can help w/pairos eyes ;_; the similarities w/leorios backstory/motivation makes me die 

and seriously im still caught up at how innocent and pure kp is oooof ough 

tho still defs the kurapika we know....theyve seemingly always had a temper, what with the reaction to the dudes in the market 

like, kurapika did NOT hold back...even after finding out that they were just part of the test! tho i do get it bc they insulted pairo...kurapika’s love for their friends/stalwart need to defend their friends is clearly a big thing 

also the market people’s reaction to seeing kp’s red eyes is rlly interesting to me...are the kurta like, known to anybody? or are they more of a vaguely talked-about group that like, ‘probably exists’? or is it that people know abt them but not the red eyes thing? it seems like these people, if any, would know, bc this market is seemingly a day’s travel from where the kurta live....i want more kurta lore bro!!

i big love pairo helping kurapika cheat like that....such an interesting twist, and makes it obvious that theirs is a friendship of equals

general thots:

so this was very much an Anime Movie, in that they cant like, advance to plot or develop the characters much, bc its a movie. and this one is non canon

it was enjoyable but i do feel like it was much more typical shounen then hxh usually is...like, i feel like this was made by the same people who make like, the naruto movies or w/e, and w/the same sort of approach/attitude 

this isnt necessarily bad - i LIKE shounen for a reason - but it was a bit noticeable bc it wasnt quite as smart as hxh is usually, and it rehashed a lot of stuff weve already seen in this show itself 

but still i think it did a good job w/what it had, and it had some good angst, and everyone was very gay which is good

the art style was SLIGHTLY wack but it wasnt as bad as i thought itd be 

overall a fun time like most anime movies. didnt reinvent the wheel but i had a good time. im excited for the greed island arc, and im also disproportionately excited to watch the hxh musical bc that is a thing that exists and i MUST see it asap bc that sounds like the kind of hilarious wackiness that appeals to me specifically

like on one hand i just usually copy the hair of whichever alternate splash shows them with hair but its??? not fitting my ideas of cassi and tal

So like I usually use mythic cassie’s curls as her canon appearance but i also believe cass (at least pre snake) would be one who would keep her hair even longer than katarina and either pin it up elaborately on her head or have some hair falling over her shoulders down to her waist instead of the short ponytail she wears. I can see her having peek-a-boo bangs so she can purposely hide behind her hair in case she accidentally loses composure/keep an aura of mystery to draw people in to her.

I also am debating on her brown haircolor. I guess whatever curse gave her snake powers could also have changed her appearance and along with that her haircolor or whatnot but I also do like the idea of brown being her natural hair color. I feel like it could play more into her inferiority complex/feeling like she doesn’t have a place in the family, and especially feeling super over shadowed by her sister since her hair is literally duller and more plain than her sister’s hair color.

Since we have no information on mama ducouteau I also thought it would be interesting if it was in fact lady ducouteau that had red hair and that marcus has brown hair. kat’s hair and appearance exactly matched her deceased?? mother’s, her father spoiled her a little more and that led to cass resenting her body even though she knows she’s beautiful according to noxian standards.

But I also like the idea of red hair being THE ducouteau thing, and thus cass also must have red hair. they’re a powerful family and you can easily recognize them because of the hair. Also this way it’s super obvious that he’s an outsider when dark haired talon joins the mix.

speaking of this guy i’m really fond of long hair talon based off the dragonblade skin, but then i stop and think “why the fuck would he leave his hair that long for” because it’s impractical as fuck for his job and I honestly see him as an all work no distractions person who would probably get a military buzz cut or something once he got off the streets and could get to a barber. But theeenn i guess there’s always like that familiarity argument that he grew up with long hair and just got used to it so *shrugs*

MOVING ON FROM HAIR i’m also bothered by talon’s eyes almost everyone here portrays him with red eyes which i  KINDA LIKE?? because its edgy and black hair+red eyes is mmmh. His eyes are gold in the normal splash though and I kinda like that more because the color is like a hawk’s eye fitting with his name of talon
