is there any piece of writing you've been itching to share lately but haven't gotten an excuse to?
- @innocentlymacabre
Hey @innocentlymacabre! Great to hear from you! :D
Enjoy this snip from the WIP that pantsed its way into my head, and I wrote whilst possessed by a muse!
(I'm currently trying to work a plot around all of this maddness, so it's slow going!)
The smell of the disinfectant tingled in my sinuses, making my eyes water. “You okay?” Augustus, his hands tucked into his trench coat pockets, cast a quick glance of concern my way. “I know it’s a lot to take in. Especially, after what happened to-” “I’m fine,” I snapped, blinking away the tears. Auggie shrugged my temper off, as always, and I took a deep breath, forcing myself to unclench my fists. “Have you managed to locate her next of kin?” “Her parents and little sister are out in the waiting room, taking a breather. I figured you’d want to have a look at her without them present. Her father found her, poor bastard.” I peered over the prone woman in the bed, the smell of antiseptic getting stronger. Her face was a mess of purple and black bruises, one eye was swollen shut, the welts beginning to rise from where she had been beaten. Her jaw had been fractured in several places, and she was due to go in for further surgery to wire the bone back in place. The surgeons just needed her to stabilise again before they could do more for her. “I know you’re not supposed to be back on duty,” Auggie rocked back and forth on his heels. “But I needed confirmation. And I didn't know who else to ask. It’s not like the Family are going to break ranks and admit to something like this.” “You did the right thing.” I continued to study the woman…girl really, she couldn’t have been any older than eighteen years old. Her long dark hair was a mess; knotted and tangled with fragments of twigs and leaves. Her fingernails, ragged and bloodied at the fingertips, were caked with mud. She must have dug her hands into the earth as she was dragged from the tent, desperately trying to grab onto anything, something, but it had rained the night before, so the ground was soft, and gave her no purchase. “Any sign of sexual assault?” I lifted up her prone arm, careful of the wires and tubes that were protruding from her body. Auggie shook his head, his mouth set in a grim line. His brown eyes were bloodshot, dark circles weighing them down. “I guess that’s something, at least,” I said, as I pulled back the sleeve of the hospital gown. The skin of her tricep was inflamed and red where the teeth marks had punctured her flesh. The medical chart had shown that her body was covered in cuts and scratches, not all of them drag marks. “So, was I right to call you?” Auggie ran his hands through his brown hair, brushing it from his eyes. “Or did I get you out of your sick bed for nothing?” “I was climbing the walls anyway.” I gingerly placed the girl’s arm back on the hospital bed, fixing her gown to cover the wound. “I told Tiff I was fine, but she wouldn't let me come back into the office.” “You went up against a basilisk, Piney. No-one has ever walked away from one before.” “And yet here I am.” I gave him a small smile. “Fit as a fiddle.” And as long as Auggie didn’t look under my shirt, he’d be able to believe that; the puncture wound from the basilisk’s fangs looked like the scars from the old bullet wounds from my time in the British army. Just a fresher scar amongst the many others. “I know you’re tougher than you look, Piney, but even you’ve got to admit that you shouldn’t be back at work yet.” “Then you shouldn’t have dropped in on me, and pulled me through a portal to…where are we?” I gestured to the generic hospital room we were standing in.

Can we see the kids you mentioned in past posts

This is Rose, Gabby and Sophie's daughter. She loves Halloween and often gets into spooky antics with her best friend Augustus Wonder who goes by the nickname Auggie (Auggie is Skid and Pump's adopted son). She tends to question Auggie but trusts in his decisions as they haven't gotten them killed or possessed yet. She's friends with the Hatz polycule kids and Lizzie's twin children too, but her best friend out of all of them is Auggie. She is 7 years old.

This is Auggie. He has a nasty habit of summoning demons and other supernatural beings with his grandpa's old occult stuff that Skid just won't throw away despite being the one who's often possessed by the things his son summons. Auggie has heard the stories of his dads' old adventures when they were his age and wants to make memories like that with his friends and often takes things into his own hands to make sure those memories happen. His fathers don't mind him doing this, but they want him to stop summoning things in their house. Auggie is 8 years old.

This is Ollie, Charlie and Hannah's son. His cousins babysit him regularly but often likes being held by Rose because she smells like flowers and he finds that comforting. He is only a few months old but it is clear that he likes spooky things like his parents because when given the choice, he will choose the bat onsie that his dad bought for him. He's calm and doesn't really cry unless his cousins, Auggie and Rose are all freaking out or he's hungry.

This is Maya, Ember and Felix. Maya is the bio child of Roy and Sally but they and the rest of their siblings will refer to Robert, Ross, Roy, Sam and Sally as their parents. Maya is 13 and goes by They/Them pronouns. Maya had a worse gender crisis than Roy did when they were trying to figure out what they were. Maya is often relaxed and goofs off often but can be serious when they want to be. Ember is Sam and Sally's bio daughter and is 12 years old. Ember is the most charismatic of her siblings and was quite the troublemaker when she was little, Ember does have a temper that as inherited from Sam but she rarely gets mad because she's very patient. Felix is Roy and Ross' bio son and is 11 years old but looks way younger because he was cursed with Roy's shortness. Felix is the most quiet child in the family but had his moments where he's quite loud.

This is Edmund, Faith and Aiden. Edmund is the bio son of Roy and Robert and is 9 years old. Edmund has the nicknames of Eddie and Ed, his full name is only used when his siblings or parents need to get his attention. Edmund is also the most chill out of his siblings. Faith is the bio daughter of Sam and Ross and is 6 years old. Faith doesn't talk much and when she does it's blunt and straight to the point, she's also going through a picky eater phase. Aiden is the bio son of Sam and Robert and is 4 years old. Aiden is a troublemaker but is also responsible when he wants to be.

This is Wilhelmina and Octavian, but they prefer Billie and Otto. They were named by their father, their mother Lizzie didn't like their names at first but grew to like them as time went on. Billie loves fantasy and often gets called a fantasy nerd by Otto. Billie can and will be dramatic. Billie isn't the smartest person but she can have her moments of brilliance when push comes to shove. Otto is a horror nerd, in particular he likes clown related horror, hence his costume. Otto likes seeing things go down hill if it doesn't hurt him, his friends or his family. Otto is quite smart for his age, often the one making the action plan for capturing whatever Auggie summons if it breaks loose and posseses someone (which it often does). Otto holds the title of scariest kid in the friend group. Billie and Otto are both 7 years old.

BACKGROUND / BIO
triggering / sensitive content: mention of drugs, child neglect, military, alcoholism, injury.
Born in Oregon, Augustus Caldwell was the first son born to Timothy Caldwell and the second born to Alice Kennedy. Raised in the higher end of the lower class, the Caldwell's struggled to make ends meet for the vast majority of their lives, and at a young age Gus learned what it meant to be in "somebody's shadow". Times weren't always good, but family was family and they always got through it all. To Gus, his big brother was the rock that he relied upon to be the positive male role model in a sea of ever revolving male "friends" of their mother that would come through their home. Because of this, Gus struggled to find any kind of stability.
Sooner or later, his parents discovered they would be having another child, one who Gus knew right away would fall under his wing the moment he was born in the hospital. Unfortunately for Gus, his parents were quite the drug addicts. They cared too much about feeling high than taking care of one another, or even their own children. Thus, the idea of having a younger sibling grow up in the household he was raised in didn't make Gus feel at ease. While he was only around the age of five at the time, he was much more mature than the average child. After all, he didn't really have a choice if he wanted to stay alive.
It wasn't too long after his little brother was born when the kids were whisked away by their parents to a small town in Maine called Merrock. Gus didn't know how it happened, or what that meant for him and his siblings, but all he cared about was making sure he was by his baby brother's side at all times. He made a promise to himself that he'd always look after him no matter what. While there would be a transition period for Gus to get adjusted to his new hometown, he at least had his little brother by his side. If anything, his little brother made things much easier for Gus. His baby brother provided him with a sense of comfort and familiarity, something Gus really needed at the time.
As the years went on, Gus slowly came to realize what his older brother, Beau, was becoming. By the time he was fifteen and in high school, he could see Beau going down a dangerous path littered with alcohol, drugs, and dealing with questionable characters. Quickly putting distance between himself and his older brother, Gus focused on studies as much as possible as the situation at home deteriorated. By the time he was eighteen and graduating high school, his older brother had been in and out of jail numerous times and was struggling more and more with alcohol. And while this was happening, his baby brother was nearing his high school years, needing someone to look after him. With so much on his plate family wise, Gus needed to get out. He needed to be free and do his own thing for a little while. However, he was torn because he couldn't leave his little brother behind. Gus had been there by his baby brother's side for his entire life and the idea of removing himself from that post was not something he could live with. Thus, the prospect of moving somewhere else within the country wasn't ideal. He needed to stay in Merrock.
He enrolled in Merrock's community college with the intention of getting certified as a mechanic. But when he got there, he saw flyers on the walls of the admissions office for an EMS training program, and signed up for that instead. For one reason or another, Gus made the decision to become a paramedic. If you were to ask him now why he chose that career path, he'd probably say it was because he'd get the opportunity to help people. Fortunately, his response would be genuine, though he had bigger things planned for himself. He wanted to get enough experience in the field before he considered becoming a nurse or something else.
Moving into a small apartment downtown, Gus stayed close by as he helped his little brother get through high school. Once his little brother's graduation rolled around and he was accepted to his top choice of school, Gus knew that it was time for him to move on. Knowing that the life that was panning out in front of him was not the kind he wanted for himself, Gus left Maine and joined the Air Force and cut virtually all ties with his family, unintentionally including his baby brother.
Shipping off to basic training was a breath of fresh air for Gus - everything that had been threatening to suck him down with his family had been lifted off his shoulders and he was free to explore who he was. While the Air Force kept him in line and provided him the structure and the challenge that he had lacked for so many years, the brothers and sisters in arms that were beside him across his training and enlistments with the Air Force taught him that while blood was thicker than water, family was who you chose to surround yourself with. Deciding to use his background as a paramedic, Gus became a Pararescueman for the Air Force. Gus found himself all over the globe at various places, helping to rescue those who needed it. After many years of doing that position within the Air Force, Gus decided to not renew his contract after his extension was coming to an end and returned to Maine. For one reason or another, something in him told him to go home.
Going back to Maine after being absent for nearly a decade had been a difficult adjustment for him, as both of his parents and little brother resented him for leaving them behind and going off and living a new life while they were still in Maine. His older brother, who had somehow gotten his life turned around more than it had been while Gus had been in high school had been the only one to welcome him home with open arms. It was a weird situation to be in, as it seemed that the tables had turned and while he had once looked up to his older brother, it seemed that Beau was looking up to him.
That streak didn't last long though, because after having been accepted to the local fire academy to become a firefighter for the town of Merrock, Gus was knee deep in his training when his brother's stupidity came back to haunt him all because of the way that alcohol had its way of taking over his older brother. It didn't surprise him when he learned through The Times that it was Beau who threw some firecrackers into a backstreet alley that caused a girl to get injured, and when Beau was sued, Gus didn't side with his brother. Beau had been stupid enough to let the alcohol drive his actions and Gus wasn't going to stand there and coddle him just because he made a mistake he needed to own up to.
Never showing up to the trial at all and not willing to show any kind of support for his older brother caused a line to be drawn in the sand - his family on side of the line and him alone on the other side made it clear where everybody stood. He had fought too hard to make a life and a name for himself after getting out of Merrock, learning skills that he could use in a career once he got out of the military and now that he was getting close to having a career that he could be proud of, he wasn't going to let anything stop him. With his family essentially declaring him 'persona non grata', Gus had joined the fire department and eventually made his mark at the station as the years went by, climbing up the ladder in ranks as a driver engineer. And when the opportunity to become lieutenant arose, Gus jumped at the chance before resigning from the title because he didn't enjoy the added on duties of the role. He's quite content con where he is as a firefighter, not feeling the need to move up in ranks anymore.
Throughout the years of being back in town and working as a firefighter, Gus created his own little family, having a set of twins by himself through surrogacy. Truth be told, Gus loves being in Merrock, especially now that he has created a life that he enjoys. And while he's trying to make amends with his little brother, he's just fine with having no contact with the rest of his family. Recently, he has moved into a beautiful cabin with plenty of room for his children and dogs to run around out in the countryside. All in all, he's raising two healthy kids, has a friend group that he calls family, and goes to a job that he wouldn't trade for the world.

official name : augustus eric grey . meaning of name : of latin origin meaning ‘venerable‘ accorded a great deal of respect ; of norse origin meaning forever ruler. nicknames : auggie. date of birth : july 1, 1993. age : twenty nine. birthplace : detriot, michigan. hometown : bellevue, washington . nationality : american. gender : cis man. pronouns : he/him. orientation : bisexual & biromantic. religion : atheist. languages : spanish, korean, mandarin, french, english & conversational sweedish. education : bachelor in energy engineering from princeton university , masters in business from princeton university .
。* ❪ 📂 › BASICS
(—) ★ spotted!! auggie grey on the cover of this week’s most recent tabloid! many say that the 29 year old looks like charles melton, but i don’t really see it. while the energy engineer / socialite is known for being loving my inside sources say that they have a tendency to be vain i swear, every time i think of them, i hear the song head & heart by joel corry & MNEK {he/him / cis man }
。* ❪ 📂 › BACKSTORY
auggie was born to a teen mother who thought she could handle raising him. she placed him up for adoption after three months when she realized it was too much. this was the beginning of auggie being bounced from place to place.
originally he was being fostered by a really sweet old couple, the dad was a professor who taught auggie all about language eventually the two moved to korea for his career which meant auggie had to go back into foster care.
( physical abuse tw ) his second family was less well natured, they beat into him obedience, he learned rather quickly to do what he was told to avoid being physically punished. needless to say he was happy when the couple decided they didn’t want him anymore and placed him back in foster care.
atticus grey never intending to be a father, hell he was never intending to be a husband but he fell in love with his assistant anna. he was ( and still is ) willing to do anything to make her happy, including having a child.
orion, while the apple of his parents eye, spent all his time alone at around five he asked his parents for a brother. never one to deny their son something he wanted they started fostering children in the hopes of finding a good fit for orion.
when auggie arrived he was a bit of a little shit with a bunch of behavioral issues, he gave his parents all kinds of grief, hiding from them, taking their stuff, once he flushed a diamond broach down the toilet to see what’d they do
he kind of just assumed they’d eventually give him back like everyone else. the only person he really spoke to was orion and even then it was usually to bully his new sibling.
as he got older and auggie realized he wasn’t going to get sent away he calmed down…slightly. turning his anger into determination to be the best, he essentially crafted himself to be a mini version of his father
auggie is extremely close to his father because well, orion is nothing like him, he likes that auggie would basically do anything to make the man proud
。* ❪ 📂 › EMOTIONAL STATE
has a very explosive temper, it’s really not hard to make him mad, he has the type of rage that has led him to almost going to jail after beating someone nearly to death
doesn’t know how to express himself so he tends to be sarcastic by default, most times he is giving you an honest answer, it’s just said in a very sarcastic manner
he is a shameless flirt but has never had any interest in being in a committed relationship, he’s cheated on every partner he’s ever had, ever
will lie to you if it’s easier for him or to get what he wants out of you
incredibly intelligent but has always had to work hard for it, school does not come easy to him, he’s just the type of person to work himself into the ground for the grade he wants
extremely prideful, has gotten into fights because of his ego being wounded
a bit manipulative, will lie, cheat, steal and do whatever is necessary to get what he wants
annoyingly nice at times, but like with most things, it’s usually a performance there are very few people who actually know auggie at all
。* ❪ 📂 › QUICK FACTS
auggie is the golden child, since orion wants nothing to do with the family business and auggie is literally a mini version of his daddy, atticus just…loves him more
atticus grey owns the biggest energy provider in all of the united states, he wanted orion to take over the family business but he was less than interested so he’s been priming auggie to take over. currently he’s avoiding as much responsibility as he possibly can but he knows he’ll have to step up at some point.
always wanted a pet but was never allowed one, probably for the best he wouldn’t know how to take care of it
doesn’t know how to take care of himself at all, he’s always paid someone to do everything for him, catch him walking around in a weird off pink bc he ruined all his laundry trying to do it himself
hates cats, he got scratched by one as a kid and has hated all of them since
did ballet until he was in high school so he’s actually a very good dance but he will do the whole teach me to dance thing just to feel you up
has an unnatural love for mcdonalds, is still mad he can’t get on the playground anymore without getting yelled at

Carry Them Both

[ Set the day before the events of As the Heavens Burn ]
Khedan strode across the Camp Broken Glass, bundled against the cold, though the big xaela’s stride was more purposeful, more energetic, than that of one simply enduring the elements. Yellow eyes scanned his path, looking for Serai, A’gust, or perhaps the massive hound that had rarely left the boy’s side since the Magna Glacies. Where one was found, the others were rarely far. Save for when Serai went out on patrol, or A’gust worked his potions in service of the camp’s chirugeons.
But since the assault on the Tower of Babil, patrols had become increasingly routine, and the chirugeons less demanding as treatment of both wounded and tempered progressed. And with ceruleum heaters repaired and regular supplies, the greatest threat Khedan had faced lately was avoiding the attentions of a certain increasingly-idle and thus far more persistent Ala Mhigan miqo’te. Why M’naku pursued him, he failed to understand.
So this news from those in command? A relief. At least, no matter how uncertain the star’s fate, he wouldn’t have to face it in the unyielding cold of this frigid waste. None of them would.
He found nothing at the quartermaster nor at the mess, but the sound of dull thuds against wood - different than the ringing of metal weapons - drew his attention to the practice fields with a knowing smile. There, a small horned figure with a shock of lily-white hair assaulted a practice dummy with a flurry of punches and kicks. Two others, an elezen in Ishgardian armor and a hyur with the look of a Limsan privateer, looked on in grudging admiration. Almost as if putting on a show, Serai’s blows redoubled while the wooden dummy creaked in protest.
“Sister!” A deep laugh underscored Khedan’s shout. “You needn’t break another one.”
“But I was just” thud “starting” ba-bom-THUD “to warm up!”
THOOM
He felt as much as heard her final punch as the dummy, set deep into the frozen soil, struggled to resist the last of Serai’s onslaught. And if a few splinters cracked off and settled into the snow, well, it wasn’t broken, was it? There was a reason that few in the camp would spar with her in hand-to-hand combat any longer.
Serai held the stance of her last strike for a moment, then stepped back to work her wrists and shoulders. A roll of her neck and a bright smile for her onlookers before the young xaela monk turned.
“Is anything wrong?” She glanced past Khedan, then back to her looming brother with a question in her mismatched eyes.
“No, but I have news. Good news. Where is A’gust?”
“With the healers, watching them treat the tempered,” she replied, moving away from the dummies to where a heavy fur-lined coat rested on a crate. “I don’t understand any of it, but he says it has some of the properties of equal exchange and just finds it all fascinating. I come out here to practice while he’s there,” Serai wrapped herself in it before she began to chill, a fond smile creeping over her features, “so he can tell me all about what he saw later, and all his ideas about it.”
Khedan chortled, having become long-used to how the pair doted on each other. “Come then,” he turned back towards the mess, Serai dashing to keep up with his long stride.
It took several steps in silence before she nudged her taller brother. “Well? What's the news?”
“Where will you go,” her brother asked, his words low and thoughtful, “when our work here is done?”
Serai blinked at the unexpected question, shrugging deeper into her coat as the warmth of her practice slowly leeched away into the Garlean cold.
“Old Sharlayan, I think?” Her answer lacked certainty, though it came quickly enough. “That’s the last place we knew the Porta Ciela had docked, even if the Captain sent us that box. And - it’s where Auggie’s sister was. So I think there, but we haven’t really talked about it because, well, everything.”
Khedan’s yellow eyes, set in dark sclera, looked ahead - perhaps ensuring that M’naku didn’t wait in ambush at the mess. “Not the Steppe? Not back to the tribe? Maarhai will be disappointed.”
Her reply was uncharacteristically tight. “I’ve disappointed Mother before.”
“Neither of you have shared what you spoke of while A’gust and I were sent to Tertium.” He drew air in between his teeth. “But neither have you spoken more than a hand of words to each other since.”
“I am not moved,” Serai’s gaze narrowed as she looked down into the snow, “by Mother’s disappointment.”
The same low chortle as earlier before Khedan turned to glance at his sister, then reached out to tousle short, lily-white hair. “You never were.”
Serai’s glowering was broken as she half-heartedly batted at his heavy, callused hand, her laughter light in response. “Khedan! Stop!” She finally ducked to the side and out of his reach, “You still haven’t told me the news. What is it?”
“You haven’t guessed? I’d bet your clever A'gust would have already.” Another glance at Serai before he looked ahead - the mess not far. “Pack your things. What remains of the capital is secured. The tempered from Tertius are all but treated; the Eorzean nations have taken those recovered from the tower into their keeping. Commander Junius said a small force will remain, but we of the Eastern Alliance? We’ve been given leave to return home, Serai. Wherever that may be...”
Serai’s steps scuffed to an abrupt halt in the snow, her eyes wide with surprise. “Really?!?”
He couldn’t help but smile. Khedan had seen Serai put down Garlean war machina, put to proof the bold boasts she made on her return to the Steppe. But this? This was the bright sister he remembered from years past, dancing in glee at the sight of spring lambs. “Yes, really. Airships are due to arrive with the dawn from your Sharlayan. We’re to escort those aboard to the Tower, and free to make our leave af-”
A sudden hug, surprisingly strong, caught Khedan off-guard and all but squeezed the words and breath out of the large xaela.
“I know there’s still more and the moon and all the other things,” Serai spilled out a torrent of words, ever faster as she went, “but I’ve missed everyone on the ship well maybenotbeck and maybe we can find Auggie’s sister and Nhaama-bless I-havetogo-tellAuggie-rightnow! Thank you!”
She released him and took off at a sprint across the camp, making a direct line to the building where the tempered were being treated. Khedan was left to himself, still gasping for his breath. After a few moments, he rubbed at his ribs, chuckling lowly
“You still carry them both.” A quiet, amused mutter as his steps carried him to the mess where he drew up with an unexpected start.
A sly smile revealing a hint of sharp fangs, one hip resting against the wall, M’naku waited for Khedan - a mug of hot cocoa in either hand...

Have a May Hare!
Name: May Hare
Age: 17-18 they forget
Gender: Agender!
Personality: Caring, creative, impulsive, temperamental, fidgety, generous, silly and Stubborn AF.
Destiny: the next March Hare
Dream: To own a Coffee shop and lounge in Bookend that brings a little bit of Wonderland to the town. And make a safe space for others to be themselves and experiment with their identities.
Relationships:
Augustine Ella: Nicknamed Veggie by May, Auggie is May's close friend. Theh met in Middle school shortly after May got separated from Wonderland. May is often found hiding in Veggie's dorm.
Primrose Beauty: Nicknamed Rosehip by May. While not tight friends May loves daring Rosehip to do silly things and making bets with them. These two often can be found discussing the terms of some task or another.
Archie Heart: Nicknamed Kingsley by May. May is very protective of all Wonderlandkans and Kingsley is no different. While May loves joining him for wild schemes and pranks, May often has to sit on him to get a decent meal or do homework. May might have dropped out of school, but they know Kingsley can't get away with that.
Clarinette Plum: Nicknamed Slippers by May. May doesn't know a lot about Slippers, but often leaves water bottles and small post dance snacks for them about. They also see their rivalry with Duchess as a little entertaining. May wants to hang with Slippers more, but doesn't know how to approach them.
Dama Jaida: Nicknamed Waves by May. May likes taking DJ out for adventures when they can. May often leaves sticky nots for Waves to remind them to eat and do their work. May has an open invitation for Waves to join Mays Dungeons and Dragons group.
Bodie Charming: Nicknamed Café by May. May doesn't actually know Bodies full first name. Only ever hearing Bodie. May likes to bounce coffee ideas around with Café and have her taste test. May likes the calmer atmosphere around Bodie.
Alyssa Beauty: Nicknamed Speckle by May. May has met Alyssa only a few times and never for long. Like Clarinette, May wants to get to know the Beauty but doesn't really know how to approach and so they leave snacks and drinks for Speckle with notes.
Canon Characyer relationships
The March Hare: May's Dad. May often has anxiety about their relationship as they fear losing him ever since May's mom dissapeared. He loves his child dearly but the two have trouble communicating as they both have different perspectives and ways to communicate. The last May saw the .arch Hare, the two had a minor fight that exploded into way worse due to their tempers getting the better of them both. May hasn't seen him in years and fears he hates them now. He doesn't, but he is terrified of what could have happened to May. Though he won't be happy to hear May dropped out of High School.
Ginger Breadhouse: Nicknamed Sweetpea by May. May met Ginger one day while using the kitchens to make some pastries. The two hit it off very well very quickly. May likes to take Ginger out to try new stuff and Ginger keeps May from cartwheeling into nonsense. Recently May's friendship turned into a crush, but May doesn't realize it yet. Ginger knows. And if she returns the feelings or not hasn't changed their friendship. One Day May will realize. It might take a bit though.
Bunny La Blanc: May's precious Baby Cousin. May adores Bunny to bits and Bunny likes May, though she finds May can be a bit too excitable sometimes. The two get along well and May is extremely protective of Bunny when she arrives at EAH.
The other Wonderlandians: the reason these guys are all lumped in one os because May doesn't actually know them too well. They never opened up to them and spent half a year not knowing any other wonderlandian escaped the curse. May is very Parental with them, especially the younger ones, and it can get annoying to most. But May is slowly letting go the fear that they will all vanish the moment May turns their back and is starting to get to know them more. (Aka ill add more on them later)
Notes:
May dropped out of High school at the end of the last school year. May got into a fight with Milton Grimm and snapped, throwing her mother's copy of "Alice through the Looking glass" at his head and dropping out. May won't say what started the fight. But it was likely in someone's defense.
May's mother left May a copy of "Alice Through the Looking Glass" before dissapearing. It was passed down to May's Mom from May's grandmother and so on. It has annotations from previous family members and dents and bruises from. Past members using it as a projectile. It is always on May's person.
May, somehow and somewhere, acquired a Great Axe. It is a Massive 2 handed Axe that May learned how to use proficiently. No one knows how or why May learned but they did.
May Nicknames Everyone they meet and interact with. It helps then remember people easily.
May has Severe ADHD Combined type coupled with Anxiety. Their ADHD causes Mood Swings and is hard for them to deal with. As such May sometimes shuts down, and simply naps the day away.
May also has developmental disorders. Dyspraxia, which affects their motor skills and balance. Dysgraphia, which effects their handwriting and organization. And Dyscalcula, which greatly effects their math and spacial abilities. May knows this, and is sad that effective treatment for these disorders wasn't found until they were considered too old for them.
May got Lymes disease as a young kid which left them Arthritic. Sometime May simply can't move right or hurts too much to do more than lay still. May has coping mechanisms for this and meds, but it doesn't always keep the flare ups at bay.
May does not turn into a Hare like Bunny turns into a Rabbit. Rather, May has Rabbit Holes that act as portals. They only have 2 and they act like the ACME Portable holes from Looney Tunes. May has to move them to move locations but can use toon logic to move them, I.E. reaching through one to grab another. Or tossing one like a disc and having it land where they want it too.

Wait is that… HERO FIENNES TIFFIN? No, it can’t be, it’s just AUGUST MIKAELSON, a 20/20 year old TRIBRID. He is the SON of KLAUS & CAMILLE. He is ALLURING AND DAUNTLESS but can also be AUDACIOUS AND SARDONIC and classifies HIMSELF as BISEXUAL. He is hiding that HE’S CREATING MAGICALLY ENHANCED DRUGS AND SELLING THEM, but I wonder how long that will stay hidden in Mystic Falls and New Orleans.
BASICS.
FULL NAME: augustus dominic mikaelson.
NICKNAMES: gus, auggie.
BIRTH DATE: april 15, 2045.
ZODIAC: aries.
AGE: twenty.
SPECIES: tribrid.
GENGER & PRONOUNS: cis man & he/him.
SEXUALITY: bissexual.
FAMILY: niklaus miakelson (father), camille o'connell (mother), hope mikaelson (half-sister), poppy mikaelson (sister), more tba.
PHYSICAL: 6′2, short brown hair, green eyes.
OCCUPATION: college student.
ABOUT.
this one here is august mikaelson, better known as gus or auggie (family only). he’s twenty and still very alive and with no body counts, which means he still has to trigger his werewolf gene and vampire side. he’s a really good with everything involving magic though, has been playing around with it for a good time now and he’s curious and eager for knowledge so he’s most likely always flipping through family grimoire and whatnot. and probably messing with stuff he shouldn’t too because why not.
this one has some great self-esteem and i think the only one who could bring that down would be his father. august tends to think he’s always right and sometime don’t know when to shut up. truth is sometimes he likes to push people’s buttons too, it amuses him. he’s not really an asshole though – well, sometimes he can be.
he’s a temperamental one, for sure. gus is usually sort of calm and relaxed and has this ‘i don’t care about much’ aura to him, which is sort of true. he can block a lot of insults as long as he thinks he’s still winning or has the upper hand, but then someone says the wrong thing or does something he doesn’t like and he’s all piercing gaze and ready to throw punches. i guess it could be said he has a bit of a temper and doesn’t deal with frustration too well. baby gotta learn.
august got a sort of artistic soul too. he’s not one to paint too much, but he enjoys drawing and music a lot. he’s a really good piano player so it shouldn’t he hard to find him just playing around with it. he’s also sort of a bon vivant, he likes nice things and has an expensive taste so it’s good that his family’s been around long enough to accumulate some money. you could say he’s spoiled and he’s not ashamed of splurging.
he’s very loyal too, especially toward his family. he’s a proud mikaelson because despite all the shit they’ve done and had done to them, they’ve persevered so how can he not look up to that?

👊 — fighting 🎭 — performance art/acting
08/ 10👊 for Max: Max is a formidable opponent. There’s a reason she’s got herself a weekly spot in the brawler’s ring. Her fighting style consists mostly of high-arching kicks and trips. Where she learned to fight? Well, she’ll never tell.
01/ 10 👊 for Auggie: Auggie, the skinny awkward boy that he is, couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag. Thus Max has him always carry around a few vials of Alchemist Fire.
04/ 10 🎭 for Max: If you consider lying synonymous with acting then she’s a master. Otherwise, Max isn’t suited for the thespian life. Her tempered mannerisms and complicit behavior don’t translate well into the performing arts. Not to say she wouldn’t ever get a part in a play. She’s got a strong voice for storytelling. Thus, if she were ever in a production, she’d probably play the narrator.
08/ 10 🎭 for Auggie: Auggie is a thespian in the making! He’s expressive, emotive, and all around charismatic. Not to mention he has a secret passion for the performing arts. Who knows? Maybe he’ll join troupe if alchemy doesn’t work out.
Thanks for the ask @asharinhun!

This what I imagine for the Girls of Girl Meets World going. I even have personalities for them and more fleshed back out back grounds for these characters. For the Girl Characters, I have Riley Matthews, Melinda Hunter, Maya Hart, and Isadoara Smackle. The male characters are Jet Hunter, Farkle Minkus, Lucas Friar and Isaiah Babineaux. I am doing it this way for a few reasons, one Shawnangela gets together in my version and Angela got pregnant with Shawn’s twins before she left for Europe, two Riley and Smackle’s friendship means so much to me and I think it is absolutely beautiful and underrated and three this is just a concept of that really appealed to me and I love it! So without further a do here are are the characters backgrounds interests and well hobbies. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think and please be respectful.
Girls of Girl Meets World
Riley Matthews: The oldest child to Cory and Topanga and older brother to Auggie Matthews she is to quote Shawn “Cory with Topanga’s hair”. She is really sweet and bubbly, very smart and loves her friends dearly. She suffers from self esteem issues and is very dramatic. She is a straight A student and her favorite subject is science. She enjoys school, hanging out with friends and loves writing and photography. After school activities for Riley, include environmental club, the school paper and gamer club
Melinda Hunter: Daughter of Shawn and Angela and twin sister to Jet. She is super girly, and she will constantly experiment with her hair. She will wear hair in various fashions much like her mother. She is a sweetheart but also knows how to be assertive and she doesn’t let people push her around which is something Riley struggles with and Melinda and Maya help with that Melinda has her own insecurities as well but hardly shows them. She even knows how to bring out the best in people like her brother Jet who she is very close with. She loves animals, fashion and is very much into journalism and art because she is very creative. Her favorite animal in particular are pigs and she even plans to get a pet pig and name him Little Jet much like her father who once had a Pet Pig and named him Little Cory. Her after school activities involve, environmental club, fashion club and photography. She is well organized and plans to run for school president.
Maya Hart: Daughter to Katy Hart. Maya is very much a rebel and is a bit of slacker and prankster. She is kind, caring and she loves to be playfully tease her friends especially Lucas with the way she goes “Ha Hur”. She is very rebellious but that gets better over time as she matures. She is very close with Riley because those two have known each other since they were five years old. Maya will go above and beyond to protect her friends. She loves music and art. She is a picture kind of gal. Her after school activities involve the Art Club, Fashion Club and Music club. She plays guitar and piano and she plans to sign up for the talent show.
Isadora Smackle: Like Farkle her family is quite wealthy. She has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)/Aspergers. She is very high functioning but she is not so good in social situations however she gets better thanks to Riley’s help. Out of all the friends from the female friend group Smackle is closest with Riley. Smackle loves science, debates and anything to do with physics. Her after school activities involve, science club, she is part of the mathletes and debate team. The three girls help Smackle gain more confidence by helping her with a make over but they don’t turn Smackle into their dress up doll they just help her with her clothing and help let down those pigtails. Smackle even does some after school tutoring and she gets heaps better with emotions and social situations.
Boys of Girl Meets World
Jet Hunter: Son of Shawn and Angela and twin sister to Melinda. Jet is very much like his father, a slacker, a trouble causer and spends and he pretty much lives in detention. He gets decent grades thanks to his sister’s help. He isn’t much into school so he doesn’t do a lot of school activities to do. Up until he moves to New York his twin sister was his only friend but unlike her he is a trouble causer. Like Shawn, Jet is very much a ladies man and has a thing for Maya Hart. Him and Maya get into the most trouble out of the friend group and like Maya he does the pictures. Jet is not into sports like his father the only physical activities he enjoys are skate boarding and swimming. He is very mechanical and knows how to fix cars and stuff. Since he is so skilled in mechanics and welding he joins the robotic team thanks to the encouragement of Melinda and Farkle.
Farkle Minkus: He is the son of Stewart Minkus and Jennifer Basset. Farkle is very much a flirt but is not as smooth as Jet or Lucas and he is a male version of Topanga. Farkle like Smackle is very awkward in social situations but is slightly better. He is very wealthy but is very embarrassed of his wealth because he just wants to fit in with the middle class. He is very smart and the class genius like Smackle. His favorite subject is science and he loves physics too. He down right hates sports the extent of his physical activities are clogging/tap dancing. His after school activities involve, science club, debate team, chess club and robotics club tap dancing which is something he has been into since he was 4 years old.
Isaiah Babineaux: Like Lucas he came from Texas. Zay is a flirt and into feminine and masculine things. He loves football, horse back riding, and baseball. He also loves tap dancing, ballet which actually helps with his hand eye coordination in football. He is a very sensitive soul and very blunt. He is not afraid to express his feelings. This is something he helps Smackle and Farkle with. He is un-apologetically himself and when he doesn’t like something he isn’t afraid to let people know. Him and Smackle are the most honest and the most blunt out of the friend group.
Lucas Friar: Grandson of Papi Joe and from Texas like Zay. Lucas came to New York because he got expelled from his old school and he got into fights a lot. Him going New York was a way for him to start fresh. His interests are sports and he loves animals like Melinda but not to the same extent she does. He still plans to be a vet. He is a little vain about his looks, super competive when it comes to sports very much like Buffy and has a temper so much so that his friends have to bring him back to reality and help calm him down. Underneath his competitiveness and his temper he is very insecure because he feels pressure to be perfect. He is very protective of his friends and his very compassionate as well. The reason Lucas is competive is because he wants to impress his grandfather and his father. He has a sensitive side which he learns to let out thanks to being Riley’s friend and being close with his mother.
Honestly I had a lot of fun writing this out but Lucas was hardest for me to write a personality for because he is very bland. Anyways I hope you enjoyed reading this and please tell me what you think and remember keep your comments respectful.

auggie has so much sympathy for people who have crappy parents. like you could easily look at her life & given the circumstances of having her mother murdered as a toddler , her dad killing people for a living & just growing up in a shitty neighbourhood surrounded by crime on top of her maternal grandparents trying to take her away from her dad it’s like she easily could have wound up all fucked up & bitter ( especially with the temper she carries ). but literally the only reason she didn’t is because her dad is such a solid parent.
yeah he might of had to leave her home alone overnight since she was a child to go to work but he was ALWAYS home by the time she woke up. he ALWAYS made her breakfast. he ALWAYS walked her to the bus stop in the morning & made her lunch & made her wear weather appropriate clothing. he ALWAYS supported her & laughed with her & played games with her & read to her. not to mention forced her to take her education seriously ! like that man literally gave her the entire world in such shitty circumstances by just giving her the love & attention a child required --- not to mention the respect. he always treated her as an equal & never talked down to her.
he was only 18 when he & amelia had auggie & he was only 21 when amelia died making him a single parent. he loved his wife so much & yet once she was gone he didn’t withdraw from the world as much as he wanted to. instead , he stepped the fuck up as a dad & became two times the parent to compensate for their loss. now ! that’s ! a ! man ! auggie never even had the time to feel empty about losing her mother because her dad was always enough because he did everything for her ON TOP of leading this gruesome , haunting career as a professional murderer.
so when auggie sees people who have shitty parental situations it fucking sucks ??? because having her dad on her side is literally the best thing in the world to her. that man is her best friend & is the reason she thinks she’s invincible. like she cannot even imagine not having that so the fact that some people don’t is so sad to her wtf.

You Are Your Worst Enemy
I’m so sorry I haven’t been active. I’ve been busy with school and other things going at the moment, so I had to step back from my writing for a bit. I’m slowly starting to write again and working on the stories I have in progress. And, to the anon who made the request, I am working on the prompt. It’s about halfway done.
Anyways, I’m a little nervous to post this. I’m not exactly sure why, but I really hope you enjoy it. I was inspired by the song Worst in Me by Julia Michaels.
Summary: Even though Riley Matthews wants to move forward with her relationship with Lucas, something won’t let her.
Word Count: 5,308
Insecure—it’s the worst quality Riley Matthews has. It wasn’t so bad when she was in middle school. Sure, she cared what her friends thought in middle school—maybe a little too much at times—but she was always able to come back from the dark place her insecurity took her. However, in high school, her insecurity only became more intense. She not only cared about what her friends thought about her, but now, she worried about what everyone around her thought. It could be something as simple as walking home and someone looking at her a little too long, and she would start tugging on her clothes with insecurities seeping through her.
Insecure is Riley Matthews’ worst quality.
Anger—it’s the worst quality in Lucas Friar. It was known that he had a temper—it was the reason that got him thrown out of his school in Texas. He couldn’t control it sometimes, and he thought the move to New York was only going to intensify his anger—and in some ways, it kind of did. Sure, he was in a new environment and had new friends that made he want to be a better person, and maybe that was the problem. He cared too much, and when someone he cared for deeply was being hurt from an outside source, Lucas wanted nothing more than to stop it. But, when he couldn’t, that is when the rage he felt would slowly start to push through. He wished he had better control over his anger, but the holes hidden behind his bedroom posters said otherwise.
Anger is Lucas Friar’s worst quality.
But, it didn’t matter that Riley was insecure, and Lucas sometimes got a little too mad because what mattered most is the unofficial thing that happened between Lucas Friar and Riley Matthews some years ago. It wasn’t that Riley was blinded by her feelings and didn’t see Lucas’ anger, or the same with Lucas and Riley’s insecurity. They were both very aware.
Lucas had spent nights listening to Riley talk about her insecurities late at night when he would sneak over, and Riley had spent just as much time talking Lucas down when his mind was clouded with rage. So, they weren’t oblivious to these qualities. They knew they existed, and they both wished they didn’t.
It was senior year when Lucas tried to make things official between him and Riley. He thought it was finally time. He had got his acceptance letter to Cornell—he was going to be staying in New York. She was going to be going to NYU. It was perfect. He was ready to have Riley Matthews officially as his girlfriend, and just in time for all the end of the year senior activities. Mostly senior prom. He and Riley had promised one another that they would go no matter what—couple or not—but being a couple would be so much better. So, Lucas had big plans to Riley to be his.
But, things don’t always work out.
He doesn’t know what happened. He couldn’t wrap his head around why Riley said no to being his girlfriend. He doesn’t remember much of that night after the single word left her lips. However, the one thing he does remember is waking up the next morning with a sore fist and a new hole in his wall.
But, he doesn’t know that Riley wanted to say yes, but something in her wouldn’t let her.
Riley cried that night after Lucas left defeatedly. She wanted to explain, but she didn’t really have an explanation herself. Well, she did. It was herself, it was her insecurity. She couldn’t fathom why someone as amazing as Lucas would be interested is someone as ordinary as her, not when he had someone like Missy always around. It never bothered Riley before but as she started to realize the direction her relationship with Lucas was headed, she wondered if she was good enough for him—and she came to the conclusion that she wasn’t.
Both had anticipated that there would be some tension between them. Days passed, and Riley and Lucas kept their distance from one another. It’s what their friends expected them to do. Weeks passed and Riley threw herself into her photography club, and Lucas threw himself into his baseball team—leaving little time for each other. Before anyone knew months had passed, and Lucas and Riley had only come into contact with one another a handful of times. Their friends knew something needed to happen to bring them together, but they were a little hesitant to get involved. So, they tried to really hard, but eventually, they couldn’t help themselves.
It’s two weeks before prom, and Riley didn’t feel like going prom dress shopping with Maya and Smackle, mostly because she didn’t want to be hounded with more questions from Maya about what really went wrong with Lucas. Usually, Maya was the one Riley turned to, but she didn’t think Maya would understand. So, she lied and said she wasn’t feeling well thinking she was safe at home.
She’s sitting in her room alone going through some of the latest pictures she had taken. Her parents were out for the day and Auggie was hanging with his friends, and she was enjoying the quiet. But, that didn’t last long.
Riley hears the sliding up of her window and turns from her laptop to see Farkle standing there smiling sheepishly at her. “I hope you don’t mind that I let myself in.”
Riley shakes her head, and Farkle slowly walks to sit on the edge of her bed. “We need to talk.”
Riley closes her laptop and sits up a little straighter. “About what?”
Farkle is careful to avoid her gaze. He knew why he wanted to come here and talk to her. It’s the same reason Zay is right now talking to Lucas. They needed to get Lucas and Riley back in each other lives—at least talking at the very least.
“About you and Lucas.” Farkle eyes meet Riley’s, and by the way, she is looking at him, he almost wishes he never said anything.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Riley throws her legs over the side of the bed and walks over to her desk and sets it down. Truth be told, she just wanted to get away from Farkle. It’s been months since she told Lucas no. Why was Farkle so interested now?
Farkle stands up and follows Riley to her desk. She still hadn’t turn around to face him. “You may not want to talk about, but I think you need to talk about it.”
Riley sighs before turning to face, surprised when she sees that Farkle is right there. “Uh,” she clears her throat, “how is he?”
“Well, he has a few new posters hanging in his room if that says anything.” Riley doesn’t say anything. She pulls out her chair from her desk and lowers herself into it. “But, I’m pretty sure you already know that.”
“Well his swollen knuckles are a little hard to miss,” Riley whispers.
“And, it’s hard to miss you staring at him and him staring at you.”
“You never miss anything.”
Farkle chuckles. “Well, I try not.” Farkle takes a sit on the corner of Riley’s bed as close as he can to her. “And to answer your question, Lucas is, well he’s hanging in there…like the way you are.”
Farkle waits for her to say something, but he has a feeling she isn’t going to. It’s been months, and she hasn’t said anything. He waited for her to break. He waited for her to need him, but the time never came. He didn’t want to push her, but he also knew her breaking point was coming, and he wanted to see if she would talk before it got to that point.
“How are you?” As soon as the question leaves his mouth, Farkle expected to hear the various answers of I’m fine or I’m okay, but she doesn’t. Farkle watched as Riley’s shoulders relaxed, and when she parted her lips, he saw the way her bottom lip quiver.
Farkle didn’t want her to break, but at least he would be here when it happened.
Riley’s eyes become glossed over. She stares mindlessly at the picture of her and Lucas that is pinned to her mirror. It’s a picture of just the two of them. It was when they were in middle school when they played Romeo and Juliet. Their mothers had asked them to pose after the play, and she remembers being nervous as Lucas wrapped his arm around her waist, but she remembers that Lucas sounded almost as equally nervous when he asked her if it was okay.
She wished she and Lucas could go back to then. When she didn’t care what people thought as much. She didn’t know why, but as she started getting older, everyone’s opinion seemed to matter more than her own.
She didn’t mean for the tears to swell in her eyes. She didn’t mean for the tears to fall, but once they started, she couldn’t get them to stop.
She uses her shirt to wipe her tears. She knew this moment was going to come. She hadn’t cried since the night Lucas left her alone in her room months ago, and she was waiting for her emotions to catch up with her. She had hoped to be alone, but she wasn’t, and she knew she wasn’t going to be able to stay silent. She knew Farkle wasn’t going to leave without her talking. So, she started, and she couldn’t stop.
“I’m not okay, Farkle. I’m not okay at all.” She stops to wipe her tears and her nose with her shirt. “I ruined everything because I’m scared. I’m scared that I’m not good enough. I’m scared that someone better is going to come along and win him over. I’m scared that once he and I are finally together he’ll see that I’m not that great, so I said no before any of that can happen.” Tears started to build in Riley’s eyes, and she couldn’t stop them from falling.
“I let my insecurity get in the way, and even if I had said yes, what I felt, what I feel, wouldn’t disappear.” Riley finally brings herself to look at Farkle. “I made a mistake though. I want to be with him I know that I do. My heart is telling me I do.” Her head drops and Farkle knows there is something else.
After a minute, Riley looks back at Farkle with fresh tears in her brown orbs. “But, my head won’t let me…not when I have doubts about myself.”
“So, why didn’t you tell him that? Why did you let him believe you didn’t want him the way he wants you?”
Riley sighs. “Because he would try to convince me otherwise, and when I would tell him my reason, two things would have happened. He would have been gentle with me at first and tell me how wrong I am, and I know I should stop, but I wouldn’t. I know I wouldn’t, and that is when the temper he has would start to show. He would get frustrated and raise his voice. I know he wouldn’t mean to, and he would say that, but his temper would come out, and he would feel bad about it.” Once again, her eyes find Farkle’s, “The worst in me, brings out the worst in him, and until I can get a handle on my insecurities, he and I can’t be together.”
Farkle wanted to push for more, and he wanted to shout at her to talk to Lucas, but he knew that wasn’t going to do any good. Riley would talk to Lucas when she was ready. He only hoped Zay was having better luck with Lucas.
Zay was just about to leave the Friar’s house when Mrs. Friar told him he wasn’t there, but just as he was walking down the steps, he saw Lucas just a few feet away with his gym bag flung over his shoulder. Zay immediately noticed Lucas' hands were wrapped, and it didn’t take him long to figure out that today wasn’t a good day for his friend.
“Hey man,” Zay says grabbing Lucas’ attention.
Lucas looks up from the sidewalk and sees one of his best friends standing in front of his door. He didn’t know whether to be annoyed or relieved. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be alone or if he wanted to talk. After the last hour he spent with the punching bag at the gym, he thought he would have some of the anger he felt today leave him, but it was still very much there, and he still wasn’t sure if he wanted to talk about.
But, he knew Zay, and Lucas knew Zay wasn’t going anywhere.
“Hey. What are you doing here?” Lucas asks just as he reaches the bottom of the stoop that leads to his front door.
Zay shrugged. “I just wanted to see how you were doing. I haven’t seen much of you.”
Lucas chuckles as he opens his front door. “We go to the same school, and we’re on the same baseball team. I literary see you every day.” Lucas says a quick hello to his mother, so she knows he’s home, before heading up the stairs to his bedroom with Zay behind him.
“Yeah, but at school, you’ve kept to yourself for a while now, and after every game, you’re quick to rush off. So, yes, I haven’t seen you much or spoken to your much for that matter, and right now, I think you need to talk.”
Lucas takes a deep breath. “You might be right.”
The boy’s get to Lucas’ room, and he tosses his bag by the door as Zay takes a seat in Lucas’ computer chair. “Alright, well, I’m all ears.”
Lucas doesn’t know where to begin. He wants to yell right now after today that’s why he went to the gym. He had heard something today, and he had no idea if it’s true, but the more he thought about it the more enraged he became. And, Zay knew Lucas’ blood was boiling as he watched his best friend pace in front of him.
“Did you know Charlie Gardner is going to ask Riley to prom? My Riley!” The sole statement rushes out of his mouth, and Zay watched as the color fades from Lucas’ face at the realization of what he said. Lucas stops and turns to look at Zay. “But, she isn’t mine. Why didn’t she say yes? She said no, and when I asked for an explanation, she said she couldn’t give me one!” His voice is a little too loud.
Lucas can once again feel the anger in him rising, so he begins to pace. “I was so mad. I still am! How could she not give me an explanation?! I deserved an explanation. I deserved to know why she suddenly changed her mind about how she felt with me, why she gave up on us. I…I just don’t understand!”
Zay heard the anger in Lucas’ voice. Zay saw the anger that lured in Lucas’ eyes, and he knew he needed to talk Lucas down, but if he was being completely honest, he didn’t know how. Zay thinks for a second about what to say, and each time he tries to open his mouth to let words rush out, he closes it. He was a little too scared to say the wrong thing.
Lucas notices Zay straightening himself up in the chair. He sees that Zay is trying to think of what to say to him and how to say it. He notices how as of late people have been treading carefully around him afraid that he’ll snap, and he didn’t want to be that person anymore. He didn’t want people to be uncomfortable around him.
He slowly lowers himself down on his bed. “I didn’t mean to shout.”
“It’s okay. I understand. You’re mad.”
Lucas shakes his head. “I’m not just mad. I’m hurt. It’s crazy, but I thought Riley was the one. I know we’re young, but no other girl compares to her. We spent years laying out this solid foundation for what I thought would one day lead to a relationship, but I guess I was wrong.”
“Why don’t you talk to her?” Zay asks a little hesitant. He wasn’t sure if it was a stupid question or an obvious one.
“Because what if, what if she tells me she doesn’t feel the same anymore. What if she tells me that the reason she said no was because I’m not the one for her. I still have this small amount of hope that it was something else that made her say no, and talking to her and learning the truth can take all that away, and I’m not ready for that.”
Zay looks at his friend, and he understands the reluctance that Lucas has about talking to Riley, and even though the original plan was to have Farkle talk to Riley and him talk Lucas, Zay was having second thoughts.
He looks at his friend, and he doesn’t want to take the last bit of hope away from him because it would be taking the last bit of Riley that Lucas was still hanging onto, and what kind of friend would he be if he took it away? So, this conversation would be one that wouldn’t turn into a Lucas story.
The last two weeks to prom pass and the conversations stay private. No one knows what was said between Riley and Farkle or Lucas and Zay.
Zay and Farkle thought it was for the best. They thought when Lucas and Riley were meant to work things out that they would. The two friends knew the brown eyed girl and the green eyed boy had things to discuss, but they couldn’t push them.
But, both were wishing that they did because maybe Lucas and Riley would be with them on their way to prom and not wallowing away in their rooms, alone. At least, that’s what they thought.
Riley’s heart is pounding in her chest as she stands outside Lucas’ house. She didn’t think she was going to be going to prom, not after what happened between them. But, she only gets one senior prom, and there wasn’t anyone she’d rather go with than Lucas. She just hoped he wanted to go with her.
She takes a deep breath and goes to knock only to stop when the door opens. “Riley?” Green eyes meet brown and for the first time in months, both feel a sense of serenity flood them with being so close to one another.
Lucas does a double take, making sure his eyes weren’t playing a cruel joke, but they weren’t. Riley was standing in front of him, and she looked breathtaking. “Hey,” Riley’s voice cracks a little with nerves.
“Hi.” Lucas didn’t mean to say it, but it felt natural, and he was glad he did when he sees the smile spread across Riley’s lips.
“Hi,” and having Riley continue their meaningful exchange led a smile to Lucas’ lips.
Riley finally looks over Lucas’ appearance, and she had no idea how she missed it. He was wearing a tux with a purple bow tie, and she couldn’t help but notice that it matched her dress—but it had to be a coincidence. She also noticed the corsage he had in his hand, but that couldn’t be for her, not when the two have barely spoken to one another. She still wasn’t sure why she was here, Lucas obviously had a date.
She shakes her head once, trying to pull herself out of the daze of being under Lucas’ stare put her in. “I-I should go. You were on your way out. To prom, right?” Riley signals to the plastic container in his hand, and Lucas nods. “Well, she’s a really lucky girl. I-I should go.” Riley takes a step back ready to turn around and walk away, but Lucas grabs her wrist stopping her, and Riley feels a spark run through her body.
Riley’s eyes meet Lucas’, and she wonders if he can hear her heart racing, or if his heart is racing as fast as hers is. “We made a promise to each other that we would go together no matter what, didn’t we?”
“We did.” Riley’s voice is soft and scared.
“And, I assume you remembered because you came here and yo-you look incredible.” Lucas' eyes drop to his hand still wrapped around her wrist and wonders if she feels the electricity that he is feeling. His eyes meet hers, “I was on my way to go see you, to ask if you were still willing to go with me, and I really hope you are.”
Riley knew what her head was telling her. She knew her insecurities about them would get in the way, but now at this moment, she wasn’t going to listen to them. Right now, Riley was going to listen to the best part of her—her heart.
A sheepish smile spreads across her lips, “I am. I was here for the same thing.”
Lucas wants to take Riley’s face between his hands and kiss her with everything inside of him, but he knows he can’t. He knows if he did he would just scare her away. So, if all he had was one night with Riley, he was going to cherish every second of it.
He carefully opened the container pulling out the corsage and slide it on her wrist, and Riley took the matching white rose boutonniere and pinned it to Lucas’ jacket. Their mothers weren’t around to capture another moment that the young pair shared, but they knew it was a moment both of them were going to remember, picture or no picture.
When Riley and Lucas arrived at the venue that prom was being held at, their friends were ecstatic to finally see them together. None of them had any idea how it happened considering nothing seemed to change since Farkle talked to Riley and Zay talked to Lucas, but they were glad it did.
The night went on, and no one would have been able to guess that there was ever tension between Lucas and Riley. They were laughing with one another, whispering in each other’s ears, staring into each other’s eyes. They were making the most of the night because they weren’t sure what was going to happen after it ended. They knew they had to talk about what happened between them, mostly Riley needing to explain how she felt, but neither wanted to think about that.
They wanted to dance with each other—fast or slow. They wanted to take silly pictures in the photo booth. They wanted to sit with their friends at the table and not have all of them look at them with worry. They wanted to have fun and not worry about what was going to come tomorrow. They wanted to forget the past couple of months, and for the night, they did.
The night had passed faster than both wanted it to, and before neither one knew, the DJ was announcing that he had one more song for the night, and both Lucas and Riley were happy when it was a slow song. They were able to hold each other close one last time before parting and not knowing what’s going to happen next.
As soon as Riley looked in Lucas’ eyes, she knew what he wanted to say, but she knew right now wasn’t the right time. “Please, not now. I just want to enjoy this last song with you.”
Lucas sighs. He knew he shouldn’t press. He knew he should enjoy this last moment with her because it may be the last one. But he needed to know why they weren’t together for himself, and this moment with her may be his last chance to find out. “I just need to know why you said no. You tell me why, and I’ll leave you alone.”
“I don’t want you to leave me alone. I never want you to leave me alone,” Riley says as sincerely as she can while staring into his eyes as they both swayed to the music.
“But, you said-“
“I know what I said,” she cuts Lucas off. “It was easier to say no than to face the possibility of us not working out. Lucas…I’m not good enough for you.”
Lucas' eyes widen at her revelation. Is that really the reason she said no? Of course, she was good enough for him. If anything, she was too good for him.
Lucas parts his lips to refute her statement, but she doesn’t give him a chance. “I know what you are going to say, and I really don’t want to ruin this night by arguing.” Riley doesn’t say anything else. She lays her head on his shoulder, hoping with that one action it would be the end, but she should have known better.
She feels Lucas shaking his head, and she has to stop herself from sighing. It was just the beginning of a much bigger talk that needed to happen.
“Riley,” Luca begins. His voice is gentle. Truth be told, he was terrified of scaring her away.
“Let’s just enjoy this last dance, and we’ll talk after.”
No other words are exchanged between them as they swayed to the music. They wanted to enjoy this last dance together. Riley didn’t want to talk right now, and Lucas was going to respect that, but by the end of the night, he needed answers.
After prom, the group of six friends went to a diner that was nearby to grab something to eat, but the only thing Lucas could think about was the conversation that was going to be happening with Riley very soon. He was a little worried that Riley would want to tag along with Maya and Zay to the after party at Billy Ross’ house, or Farkle and Smackle would extend the invitation to go back to Farkle’s house to watch movies with them. But, when no one did, Lucas knew that his friends were giving him the time he needed with Riley to talk.
When the group of friends part ways, Lucas and Riley are both nervous. Neither said a word as they begin to walk. They didn’t know where they were walking, but they both knew that they weren’t ready to end the night.
As the two continues on their path, they find themselves walking to a park that was just a few blocks from Riley’s apartment. It was also the place they had their last good memory together.
Riley immediately walks over to the swing set—it’s what she always did when she and Lucas went to the park—and Lucas followed right behind and stood behind her ready to push her — because it’s what he always did.
Neither one knew where to start, or who should start. But, Lucas knew one thing for sure, he wasn’t going home without talking to Riley.
As soon as Lucas’ fingertips touched her back to give her a gentle push, she felt butterflies fill her stomach. She wanted to enjoy the feeling, but she knew she couldn’t. She knew she needed to talk.
“So, you want an explanation as to why I said no,” Riley says barely audible.
“I do, but right now, I want to know why you think you aren’t good enough for me because if anything Riley, you are too good for me.”
Riley shakes her head vigorously. She can feel tears already building in her eyes. She was hoping that he would forget about that, but she should have known he wouldn’t.
“Because it’s true,” Riley is finally able to mumble out, and Lucas grabs the chain of the swing to stop Riley from swinging. “I’m not good enough for you.”
Lucas walks around to stand in front of Riley, and he sees her head dropped staring at the floor, and without thinking, he grabs her hands and gently pulls her up. When she finally looks at him, his heart breaks when he sees the tears that slid down her cheek, staining her face.
Riley knows she needs to continue before Lucas can object. “You might think I am, but Lucas the problem is I don’t think I am. I want to believe I am because I want to be with you, but I can’t.”
“Riley, we can be together.” Again, Riley shakes her head. “Yes, we can. I know we can. I know because I-I love you, and I’m willing to work through anything to be with you.”
Riley can’t control the tears that come rushing out. It’s the first time Lucas has told her he loves her, and she knew she felt the same, but she also knew that she couldn’t be with him…not yet.
“I love you too,” Riley sobs, “and that’s why I can’t be with you.” Lucas sighs in frustration—frustration of not understanding what is going through her head—and Riley knows if she doesn’t continue Lucas is going to try with everything in him to convince her differently, and she also knows what will follow after that. “I would sabotage us. I would be so consumed with my own doubts, my own insecurities, that our relationship wouldn’t be given the chance it deserves.”
“But, how do you know if you don’t try, Riley.” Riley can hear the rise in his voice, and without thinking she moves forward and cups his face between her hands, and her brown glossed over eyes meet Lucas’ green eyes.
“Because I know myself. I know what I’ll do, and I don’t want to ruin it because you are who I want to spend forever with.” Lucas looks at Riley with awe. He thought she didn’t want to be with him because she no longer felt the spark he feels, but at the same time, he was still a little agitated.
He wanted to shake her and tell her he wouldn’t let her do anything to ruin their relationship, but he also knew that she had her mind made up, and maybe it was the right thing to do. Riley was right. Lucas has seen what happens when doubt flood her head, but she needed to know that he was going to be there, that he wasn’t going anymore. But, he didn’t need to because Riley knew by the way he was looking at her.
Riley slowly drops her hands from Lucas’ face and says in a soft tone, “I know, and I promise not to push you away anymore. But, I need you to be patient with me.”
“And, I will,” Lucas takes a step forward and takes her hand in his, interlocking their fingers, “As long as you really try and not let doubts stop you from trying.”
Riley looks down at their hands, and at this moment, she knows this is what she wants. The only problem is that feeling doesn’t always stick, not because she doesn’t want it to but because she doesn’t always feel worthy, and she needs to at all times.
Her eyes meet his, “I promise.”
That night when the two parted way they weren’t worried about the next time they were going to spend time with each other or the next time they would speak. Riley wanted to turn around and tell him she changed her mind. That she couldn’t wait to be with him, but she knew it was from the high she felt from spending all night with him. She knew she wouldn’t always feel that, and Riley couldn’t let the worst part of her destroy her forever with Lucas.

Episode 14 - Girl Meets Childhood Memories
It was the night before they left for their vacation and everyone was sleeping over at the Matthews house. The guys were all going to sleep in the living room, while the girls slept in Riley’s room. They were going to spend New Year’s at a ski resort, although not the same one from freshman year, because her mother told them no to that.
“So what should we do until we all fall asleep, because it’s still early right now,” Maya said as she sat down on the bay window. Josh sitting next to her while Riley sat on the other side with Lucas at her feet, his head on her lap while she ran her fingers through his hair.
“Oh I know,” Zay said standing up. “What about we each say what was our most embarrassing childhood memory, or better yet have someone else pick it for us.”
“Zay how would that work if the only person you’ve known from childhood is me,” Lucas said before he smiled. “Wait I take it back I want to tell you about Zay’s most embarrassing childhood moment.”
“Why did I have to open my big mouth,” Zay said before face planting onto Riley’s bed making her laugh.
“Okay so when Zay was six, his grandmother baked a batch of cookies for the annual fair that happens in town. She was going to sell them,” Lucas started.
“Oh is this why he only gets one cookie,” Riley said smiling down at Lucas.
“It’s a part of the reason,” Zay said interrupting them.
“No, it’s one hundred percent the reason, you see Zay over here loves his grandmother’s cookies so much that he gorged himself on them, and when I say gorged he dipped them in milk and ate fifty out of one of the boxes, and then promptly began to throw up on all of the other batches of cookies. His grandmother was livid and they had to take him to the hospital because he accidentally poured an entire bottle of vanilla extract into his milk but he had thought that the cookies were the reason for all of the flavor and kept eating them. They had to pump his stomach because he had eaten so much.”
“I thought I would hate the cookies after that but grandma made me another batch a few weeks later and started the one cookie tradition soon after that,” Zay said smiling. “I love my grandmother very very much.”
“We know, and we’re glad you have her in your life,” Riley said smiling. “Oh can I be next?”
“Go ahead, but who are you going to talk about?” Josh said but the smile on Riley’s face made him want to get up and leave.
“I actually have a story about the first time Maya and Josh met,” she said bouncing up and down.
“No,” Maya said looking at her.
“Yes,” Riley said before looking at everyone else. “The reason they both hate this story is because they had wanted to forget, but I remember it like it was yesterday, because Josh had been visiting while my grandparents went on a second honeymoon. Maya had been curious about what it meant, only to force Josh to marry her right then and there and reenact the honeymoon. Josh was ten at the time and Maya had just turned eight.”
“I remember this,” Farkle said from across the room. “I was in the park when the two of them were walking around hand in hand.”
“Yeah, except when we got home she had made him carry her over the threshold and Josh tripped making Maya fly into the cake my mom had just finished making.”
“Okay that’s enough,” Maya said trying to stop her from going on.
“And when Maya got up she asked Josh if he wanted to share some of the cake, and he said yes thinking she was going to hand him the plate, and she rubbed her face on him instead.”
“End of story,” Maya said looking at her with a death glare.
“Fine you party pooper,” Riley said pouting.
“You want to play it like that,” Maya said looking at Riley. “Fine, let me tell you guys about the first time Riley got her period.”
“Maya,” Riley yelled. “That’s private.”
“Doesn’t matter, it’s about the most embarrassing memory,” she said looking at Riley and daring her to say anything else about the day Maya and Josh had played a married couple.
“I want to know,” Smackle said interested in what was happening.
“Of course Smackle wants to know,” Riley said throwing her hands in the air.
“I’ll tell you,” Maya said a smile on her face telling Riley that the story was going to happen regardless of what she said.
“Fine Maya but remember, I’ll get you,” Riley said as attempted to threaten as best she could.
“I’ll be waiting,” Maya said before turning to the rest of the group. “So it was a month before the end of sixth grade, and Riley is at home hiding in the closet, she didn’t know what was happening and so she kept changing her clothes in an attempt to hide it because she hoped it would go away… she thought it was a cut.”
“Please Maya stop,” Riley said but Maya continued.
“Her mother comes into the room as I climb in through the bay window, asking why Riley has so much laundry in the basket when her clothes had just been washed and when her mother notices what’s going on she has to pull Riley out of the closet to explain it all… but the most embarrassing part isn’t hers but her father’s, you see once Matthews found out he tripped going down the stairs just to get her those tween pads they sell at the store and had to get like four stitches on his forehead because he freaked out that she was becoming a woman, but he also wanted to make sure that she was taken care of.”
“He had a concussion from that fall,” Riley said remembering it like it had just happened. “I got chocolate and ice cream after I freaked out from him falling, but he had to stay in the hospital that night and I had been so scared that I had killed him that I stayed with him.”
“That man is not cut out to have children,” Farkle said hiding a laugh. “At least not girls because he’s not this bad with Auggie.”
“That’s because once they have a second child families tend to be more centered,” Smackle says.
“Anyone else want to share something embarrassing?” Riley said looking at her friends.
“I have one, but it’s not embarrassing as it is about me saying thank you,” Zay said looking at his friends. “Thank you all for being my friends.”
“Aww,” Maya and Riley say at the same time.
“Wait I want to hear about Lucas as a kid,” Farkle said looking at them. “He’s too perfect I want something that will change that.”
“Farkle I’m not perfect and you know it,” Lucas said while Riley ran her fingers through his scalp.
“Yeah, don’t lie to us,” Smackle said looking him in the eye.
“Fine, okay the first time I rode a horse, it jumped and I landed in a pile of horse poop,” Lucas said trying to deflect.
“Oh I remember that, it was the day your Pappy Joe wanted to take us out for ice cream, except you landed in the poop, and broke your leg,” Zay said looking at him. “It was funny to me, but Pappy Joe was talking about something that day.”
“Yeah he was telling me about how important it was that I learn to control my temper,” Lucas said with a sad look on his face. “It didn’t stick very well now did it.”
“No,” Zay said looking sad. “We kind of let him down after that.”
“Maybe we can go for a visit,” Riley said smiling.
“I don’t know Riley the last time we went down to Texas,” Farkle started but Riley put her hand up to stop him.
“Texas can’t be a bad memory anymore, we have to make it a good memory too,” she said looking at her friends.
They all nodded, even Smackle, Cassie and Josh who didn’t really know everything that Texas stood for when it came to Riley and Lucas. She wanted to change those memories for them all, and make some new ones as well.
Later that night when everyone was asleep Riley snuck into the kitchen so get some water only to wake Lucas. He walked over to her smiling and gave her a hug.
“You don’t have to go to Texas if it makes you uncomfortable,” he said to her.
“It’s not… well it’s not uncomfortable anymore, and I want to see Pappy Joe again, maybe get to know him a little better,” she said to him giving him a quick kiss on the lips. “Maybe some happy memories with our friends is all we need.”
“Well let’s make some happy memories this weekend as well,” he said smiling.
“Walking in the snow together drinking hot cider,” she said smiling. “Making a snow man, and sledding down a hill.”
“All I need is you there,” he said smiling.
“That’s perfect.”

Still finding inspiration from Calder’s circus after all these years.
Julian’s teacher made a passing reference to Calder’s mobiles as she was delivering a lesson about simple machines on Zoom this morning. Apparently, Julian hasn’t forgotten the many trips we used to take to The Whitney to park ourselves in front of Calder’s circus figures. So today, after his class meeting, he skipped the simple machines invitation in favor of rewatching old YouTube videos of Calder performing. On Julian’s initiative, we spent the next few hours making wire figures and sewing clothes for them.
Zoom school has been hard for each of us. For me, it’s tricky managing the the invitations and passcodes, the intrusions on what would otherwise be our schedule and our curriculum, and then trying to coax Julian and Auggie to pay attention to the teacher, follow up on assignments, be kind, etc...
For them, I know it’s hard to watch friends pop up in boxes on a screen without being able to interact in the same way. It’s hard for them to care about work that’s not tangible and that wasn’t their idea— one of the perils of the self-directed learning approach we’ve been fostering since they were babies. Ouch. I also know it’s hard to be in close proximity of their legos and bikes and books without being able to play with them at all times... We are trying to spend three hours in the morning mostly focused and inside, alternating between their Zoom calls and individual work I’m doing with them in reading, writing and math workshops. By 11, we get outside to walk and then they can spend the rest of the day free while I try to do my own work in the cracks of that time.
IT IS A STRUGGLE. The market is a beast; John is exhausted and needs help sometimes more than kids need to be homeschooled. I’m trying to finish some online learning projects for teachers to honor existing contracts this spring. And the renovation work on our new house is so exciting but requires constant attention. We each have about one temper tantrum a day, at least... but I am also quite sure I’ll look back on this with nostalgia.
