Prąd przemienny w cewce zmienia pole magnetyczne, co powoduje ruch cewki i dołączonego stożka do przodu i do tyłu. Ruch ten porusza powietrze, tworząc fale dźwiękowe. Im szybciej porusza się stożek, tym wyższy jest wytwarzany ton. W przypadku niskich tonów membrana porusza się wolniej, co daje typowy dźwięk basowy.
