Audiology - A Growing Specialty
Audiologists are medical professionals who assess, diagnose, treat and prevent hearing disorders in patients. They can be found in private practice or in hospitals and other health care facilities as part of a team of healthcare providers.
Audiologists are trained to assess hearing in a variety of environments, using specialized equipment to collect information about the inner ear and auditory system. They can perform otoscope (eardrum) inspections, remove earwax and conduct diagnostic tests. They are also knowledgeable about the latest in hearing aid technology.
They can be found in a range of settings from doctor’s offices to hospital-based services and are able to provide care for individuals of all ages. They can work on multidisciplinary teams with other doctors, therapists and specialists such as speech-language pathologists, optometrists and physical therapists.
Perth Audiology is a growing profession with a projected 16 percent increase over the next decade. This is due to a rise in hearing loss among an aging population and the increased demand for early detection techniques.
The career of an audiologist can be both rewarding and challenging. It offers excellent salaries and a good work-life balance, making it one of the top careers to choose.
A Bachelor’s Degree is usually the first step in becoming an audiologist. This can be completed in a four year program that is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation and includes supervised clinical practice and a national exam. This degree enables graduates to become licensed in most states.
After completion of this degree, a candidate can then pursue a four-year Doctoral degree that includes a combination of academic courses and supervised clinical experience. This program requires a minimum of 100 semester hours from four core areas: physiology, anatomy, communication sciences and acoustics.
Students have access to research laboratories, mentored student and faculty research projects, and several course offerings within the medical school curriculum. Additional partnerships with area hospitals, clinics and schools further expand student research opportunities.
This field of study is a growing specialty that combines education and research to improve human communication and reduce barriers to speech and hearing. Graduates are prepared to function as clinicians, educators, administrators and collaborators in research.
They are able to conduct hearing assessments, provide counseling, assist with the selection of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and teach lip-reading. They are also knowledgeable about a variety of medical problems that can lead to hearing loss, and they may refer their patients to ear, nose and throat physicians or otolaryngologists if a more serious diagnosis is necessary.
The audiologist is also responsible for finding and implementing ear protection solutions for those who work in highly loud industrial or recreational environments, such as musicians or pilots. This is done to prevent permanent damage to the ears from exposure to high levels of sound or noise that may cause hearing loss over time.
The career of an audiologist is one that requires a high level of patience and dedication to patient care. They are a critical member of the healthcare team and are often required to take on administrative or leadership roles.

I got a bud with cochlear implants who was told on one visit she needed a new processing chip (lots of $$$/some time readjusting to the new sound) when what she actually NEEDED was an $80 new power cord. Even when she changed out jobs (went from bad retail to something that was a better fit for skills/better paying) she was still stuck with the same audiology crew because Midwest. (I don’t recall if she was still stuck at “working but my state actually lets me qualify for Medicaid at salary” or if her new people were “we’ll COVER your care but it has to be local”.)
I’m living in Texas and I can’t even get my “just fractured her foot has NO FUCKING INCOME” close friend any real care. (None of the specialists will do a self-pay and while 99% of us on this hellscape would probably be “sure she’s disabled” so she could at least get MediCAID we pretty much have her clock ticking down to when she’s 65).

Is paramedical good for me?
Let’s see if paramedical is a good career choice for you. Whether a career as a paramedic is good depends on the salary, work schedule, and pension system it provides. All of these factors depend on your state and the agency.
Tumblr media
I also know people who were able to make $60,000 per year as paramedics, but that was in a place where costs were higher and the standard of living was much better. In paramedics, the pay is not bad (about $45,000/year) but the working conditions are miserable. Most paramedics work 12-hour, 12-days-on, and 12-days-off shifts, which is a gruelling schedule for anyone. Placement from a good paramedical institute might reward you a handsome salary.
Worse, for paramedics in some places, it’s almost impossible to find a full-time job. The typical hours worked per week is 56 and the average income from other jobs was $38,000. Most medics have to work a second or third job to make ends meet. The paramedic profession is notorious for causing burnout. It’s often referred to as “The White Coats,” right along with doctors, lawyers, and surgeons. And the stress of the work, especially the stress of the job, is the culprit.
With that in mind, paramedical is a very high-impact occupation and is therefore satisfying. What it means is that there are people in the field of emergency medical care who think they know better than you and me how we should care for ourselves. They have reasons to think that they can tell us what we should eat, what exercise routines are best for keeping us healthy, and even what supplements and vitamins we should be taking.

To an Audiologist Salary Levels and Job Opportunities Continue at Generous Levels
Can you expect to get rich working as an audiologist? We'll get to what the typical audiologist salary looks like, in a minute. Let us though, first take a look at what it takes to become an audiologist.
It used to be a lot easier to become an audiologist. Up until about five years ago, the bar was low enough that you could earn a master's degree and apply for your license to practice as an audiologist. More and more, around the country now though, states are starting to require a doctorate of anyone planning on applying for a license. It is a Doctor of Audiology degree that you need; and in about 20 states around the country, it is the minimum price of entry. Earning that doctorate will take time - it's a full four-year course.
In every state around the country, if you wish to practice as an audiologist, you absolutely have to be registered or licensed. This isn't a one-time thing, taking the exam to be licensed. Almost every state requires that you keep up with the latest in your field with ongoing education. And they will test you for your learning at your license renewal exams. It happens to be one of the most lucrative parts to working as an audiologist - dispensing hearing aids. In several states around the country, a qualified audiologist isn't licensed to dispense hearing aids. One needs to apply for a Hearing Aid Dispenser License to be allowed to run a practice where one tests for, prescribes and issues hearing aids. There is a Certificate of Clinical Competence and Audiology that the American Speech Language Hearing Association issues that can sometimes stand in for a hearing aid dispenser license.
Like all other specializations in medicine, a job in audiology happens to be completely safe in an economy in any kind of shape. This is a job that cannot be outsourced. The job outlook for qualified audiologists happens to be quite stellar. They expect job opportunities to rise in audiology at a rate that is far faster than for most other jobs. Still, audiology is a relatively obscure niche; and there aren't expected to be that many jobs in absolute terms. The best audiologist salary awaits the qualified practitioner who's willing to locate himself to a city that has a large population of older people.
So then, do we finally come to the question of what the specific terms an audiologist salary is likely to look like. This year, the average audiologist was a doctorate will need to around $70,000 a year. It's a reasonably high salary; if you went into private practice prescribing hearing aids though, you coud probably do as well as you found new opportunities, to prescribe hearing aids.
