Audio Technica ATH M50 Review Once upon a time, there was the Audio Technica ATH M50 overview headphone. The ATH-M50 changed into geared towards studio use. They had been advertised as a professional studio reveal. Shortly after gaining plenty popularity, the M50 became replaced by way of the M50x headphones. Though the two headphones are nearly equal, some variations have seen the Audio Technica ATH-M50x advantage more reputation among customers. In this overview, I spoil down the ATH-M50x’s layout and build fine, comfort and suit, sound, packaging and accessories, specs and extra.

Design Looks and Build Quality Like it’s predecessor, the Audio Technica ATH M50x Headphones. Comparing the 2 headphones side via side, there are quite some observable variations you could spot. The ATH-M50x’s build is frequently out of plastic components. However, it feels robust and I sense there’s no difficulty or flaw to whinge approximately.
Audio-technica-ath-m50x earcups
The scarf, but, has metallic included which makes it bendy to wear. The padding, even though extra plush than the M50 isn’t always that exceptional. The materials included aren’t excessive great and seem to crack over time. However, they are gentle and must closing quite some time before they begin chipping off. The terrible information is you can not update the scarf. But, replacement earpads can be sold on line and changed.
Apart from first rate construct quality, the design of the M50x is another win. The earcups rotate and twist to make the headphone very foldable and compact. Portability is a big plus attributed to the recognition of the M50x. Being capable of use the headphone outside and inside is a huge plus for folks who are seeking out an all-in-one headphone solution.

The Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones additionally comes with a swappable cable design that did no longer feature within the M50. The headphone connector is a 2.5mm connector and functions a groove for a twist-to-lock mechanism, which is proprietary. This limits a person to most effective the cables provided by using audio technica headphones m50x before an o.E.M alternative turns into to be had.
Comfort and Fit Headband and Clamping Pressure The scarf is made from a combination of plastics, steel and protein leather-based that cowl the padding. The padding fabric on the scarf is soft and decently padded though it receives uncomfortable. After a few several hours of use, you can dig into the pinnacle of your head. Periodically adjusting the placement of the headband works well to prolong its utilization.

The headband additionally offers a wide range of size adjustments to fit maximum head sizes. The clamping force is a little tight in the beginning but have to lessen with common use. For a brief solution, you could try to stretch out the headphone by way of keeping your earcups and slowly pulling them. Repeat and check them in your head till the desired clamp is done. However, you have to do that with care due to the fact using too much pressure would possibly make a free fit.
Earcups The earcups are huge, but, the earpad’s openings are a little small plus an awkward form that gets uncomfortable for folks with huge ears. The earpads, like the headscarf, use a small quantity of padding but still sense relaxed. However, all through long classes, the headphone does get uncomfortable. The reasonably-priced earpad padding also causes the headphone to get a chunk warmer.

The materials used inside the construction of the earpads is similar to the only that capabilities on the headband. Though it’s miles tender, the satisfactory of the material leaves much less to be preferred through the years. After the usage of the headphone for some time, the earpad and headband cowl starts to crack which escalates to peeling off after a while. However, the earpads may be changed with aftermarket options that are readily available on line.
Audio-technica-ath-m50x compact layout
As I in advance stated, the earcups can fold to a totally compact design for clean transportation or compact garage. The earcups can also turn 180 levels to relaxation flat on the table or lay flat in your chest if you have them round your neck. DJ’s can also use single-ear listening by using flipping one earpiece with ATH M50x Headphones. Overall, it offers diverse adjustments you may use to suit you.
Isolation Decent clamping pressure and an excellent healthy should offer correct passive noise isolation. Overall, I might placed the isolation of the M50x Headphones at a good rating. They do block and drown out the noise in less busy streets or locations. They war a bit bit in very noisy places, particularly with a bad match.
Sound Audio Quality The audio technica headphones m50x is basically advertised as a expert studio monitor headphone. ath m50 headphones review However, thru the general sound is balanced, I do no longer do not forget it to be reference high-quality. The normal sound is warm, with first rate bass response, a slightly recessed midrange and first rate treble reaction.
Low-End (Bass) The bass makes up the primary phase of the frequency response that have to don’t have any hassle with an average man or woman. For the ATH-M50x, the low-cease has numerous power, a respectable sub-bass presence, and a punchy mid-bass. Though the bass is properly prolonged and tight, in some recordings it can get a little bit out of manipulate. I find the bass outstanding for the digital style and some bass oriented music. The bass is the primary consciousness of the M50x also facilitates for visiting round through improving isolation.
Midrange The midrange as I in advance stated is a touch recessed. The clarity is taken returned a bit but the headphone is still enjoyable for long listening periods. Though the bass and treble are a bit suggested, there is good separation. The bass does now not bleed into the mids, and the highs are also properly tamed.
High-End (Treble) The treble is nicely balanced and is derived out without a doubt. Like the bass, it is suggested/upfront and using the headphone at high volumes receives uncomfortable and fatiguing quite speedy.
Imaging and Soundstage The soundstage is right for a closed-back headphone. It isn’t always ‘in your head’ but it’s also not huge. The imaging is good and you could as a minimum tell the one of a kind instructions of sounds from exclusive contraptions.
Packaging and Accessories Package audio-technica-ath-m50x package deal and add-ons
The Audio Technica ATH-M50x is available in a ordinary bundle like most in their headphones. Inside the container, the headphones take a seat in a cardboard reduce out. The packages additionally include 3 one-of-a-kind cables to make every person satisfied, 1/4″ adapter, and a drawstring storage pouch you may use to hold the headphones around. Though the pouch gives a manner to carry the headphone, it’s going to now not defend the headphone from unintended falls. However, you can purchase a tough body carrying case just like the Slappa Hardbody Pro headphone case that well suits the M50x.
Cables The benefit of which include a swappable cable is seen with the aid of the variety of cables covered in this package deal. The packages come with a 1.2–3m coiled cable, a 3m instantly cable and ultimately a 1.2m portable cable. On the headphone give up, all the cables function a 2.5mm TRS connector which has a proprietary design because of the locking groove. All 3 cables additionally have 3.5mm TRS jacks on the opposite give up. The longer two cables have a thread for a 6.3mm adapter jack.
What we Like: Removable cable Build nice Excellent Punchy Bass Semi-first rate consolation Better than average portability Decent isolation Cable choice What we Don’t: Proprietary headphone connector Narrow soundstage Materials and sturdiness Not studio video display units unlike label Comparison Table HEADPHONES IMPEDANCE SENSITIVITY FREQUENCY RES** WEIGHT Audio Technica ATH-M50x 38 ohms ninety eight dB 15–28,000 Hz 285 g Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro eighty ohms 96 dB five — 35.000 Hz 270 g Audio Technica ATH-M40x 35 ohms ninety eight dB 15–24,000 Hz 240 g Sony MDR 7506 63 ohms 106 dB 10–20,000 Hz 230 g Audio Technica ATH-M60x 38 ohms 102 dB 15–28,000 Hz 2 hundred g Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 35 ohms 100 dB 5–40000 Hz 290 g The Competition: Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro The ATH-M50x and the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro fall in a similar rate range. However, each of those headphones is distinctive. First, the construct high-quality may be very extraordinary. While each are properly constructed, the DT770 Pro is the first-class. The earcups are amazing plastic which feels higher than the M50x. The comfort of the DT770 Pro is likewise very good. The earcups are big and covered by velour. The headscarf is also correct and the clamping force is right. The sound of those headphones is quite comparable. Both have an emphasis at the bass and treble while the midrange is a bit recessed. However, the bass of the M50x is lots extra outstanding with lots of power. The soundstage and imaging of the DT 770 Pro is the great of the two and in all likelihood one of the quality in closed-back headphones.
Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs M40x The M50x and M40x are each proper headphones. Build sensible, the ATH-M50x is right, higher than the M40x. The Audio Technica ATH-M40x is smaller, compact and lighter. They do experience inexpensive however it must be k in case you cope with them nicely. Soundwise, each headphones are not neutral. The bass of the M50x has extra slam and effect. The M40x common targets for a impartial and balanced sound signature. The ATH-M40x has a extra flat sound signature which I suppose is superb for budget audiophiles or tune-making. The M50x is higher for listening to track, but not critically.
Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs M60x The Audio Technica ATH-M60x has an on-the-ear design. On-ear headphones have continually lacked comfort. I rarely use on-ear headphones due to comfort problems. Audio Technica did a top notch job with the M60x. The build is good, and the material appears of a better great. Though they’re not collapsible like most headphones in the ATH-MXXx series, they’re lightweight and the clamping stress is good. Comparing these to the M50x, the bass isn’t as loud however has a nice slam. The midrange and treble reaction is greater reported which makes track more immersive and revealing. Vocals, tool separation, soundstage, and imaging are all better on the M60x.
Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs Sony MDR 7506 The Sony MDR 7506 and the ATH-M50x are each taken into consideration studio headphones. The build of the MDR 7506 is notable and robust. The headphone is mild but lacks the portability related to the M50x. The 7506 additionally does not have a detachable cable which is a downside until you need to attempt modding the headphone. Soundwise, the Sony MDR 7506 has much less bass. The treble and mids are prominent which makes them a incredible headphone so one can let you listen diffused things other headphones could otherwise leave out. If you’re identifying between the ATH-M50x and Sony MDR 7506 for studio headphones, I might advise you to choose the Sony.
Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs MSR7 The ATH-MSR7 I reviewed weeks ago is a great headphone. It is nicely constructed with better substances. The comfort is good and typical better than the M50x. For vital listening or studio tracking, the MSR7 is a strong choice over the M50x. The bass is not outstanding, the mids are properly balanced and clean even as the treble is slightly vivid. Read my Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 evaluation for an in-intensity view of the headphone.

Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs M40x vs Sennheiser HD 558 - Best Of The Best!
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x needs little introduction, but I’m going to give you guys just a brief background about this particular model and its rise to fame. The M50x is actually an updated version of the legendary ATH-M50, which trails back all the way to the early 2000s. The “x” model was just released in early 2014, and with it, came a lot of necessary revisions and improvements. For example, the original M50 came with a 10 ft cable that was not detachable, so they weren’t exactly practical. Also, the original M50 was rather uncomfortable with too much clamping force, so the “x” model comes with less pressure and better comfort. One of the most important differences is that the sound has been tweaked for a more modern sound signature, and I think it is noticeable improvement over the originals, which still sounded great in their own right.
The Audio Technica ATH-M50x, M40x, and the Sennheiser HD558 are the absolute best headphones under $200! I bought the Audio Technica ATH-M50x for $150, the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x for $100, and the Sennheiser HD558 for $80 dollars. For the Sennheiser HD558, I have seen them on sale here and there for $60 or $70 dollars which is an incredible deal! For the Audio Technica ATH-M50x and M40x, I don't see them on sale that often but if you have seen them for lower prices please let me know in the comment section. For design, The M50x looks the best in my opinion and the second runner up would be the M40x. The M50x has a clean finish, looks very sharp, and the reason I think it looks better than the M40x is because it has a bigger frame where it looks very sleek. The M40x has a great design as well, it just has a little bit of a smaller frame. Lastly, the Sennheiser does not look bad, it just has a bulkier look and not the most exotic looking headphones but honestly it's personal preference. As far as the flexibility goes, the Audio Technica's are typically very flexible and has a real nice range of motion. The Sennheiser is not too flexible and doesn't have a really nice range of motion and feels a bit for stiff. The Sennheiser HD558 is definitely the most comfortable out of all of these headphones. The ear cushion have a really nice plush feel and also are very soft and the headphone has a lot of padding which create a very comfortable experience. You can wear these headphones for hours and hours with no discomfort. I use these headphones to game and watch movies with and. The second runner up in my opinion is the M50x. The reason I think the M50x is more comfortable than the M40x is because the ear pad is a bit wider so when it sits on your ear, it provides more comfort where the ear pad on the M40x is a bit smaller so it sit a little on your ear and is a tad bit firmer. I would say you can wear the Audio Technica's for 2-3 hours with no discomfort and after that your ears might start to get a bit warm because the ear pad are plastic. So sound, a very important factor when trying to decide which headphone to pick. Some thing these headphones have in common is they have very detailed mids and highs, rich deep lows, and outstanding clarity with a rich sound stage. The sound stage is very spacious where you can here the instruments, vocals, and other things so clearly, you might even hear something you haven't heard before in one of your favorite songs. There is mainly a couple difference that separates these headphones. One is that the Sennheiser HD558 is an open back design so it can leak more sound so if you are going to be in the office or quiet areas like the library, it might disturb others, but I would say this would be at higher volumes. The Audio Technica's are closed back design which create a really immersive listening experience and it doesn't really leak sound much. Another difference between these headphones is the bass. First, I do want to mention that all of these headphones are not bass heavy but out of all these headphones, the M50x has a little more bass compared to the Sennheiser HD558 and the M40x. The bass on the HD558 and M40x is a bit more lean, it's present but not too much bass. The bass on all of these headphones is very tight, punchy, and controlled and sounds great. The best way to describe it is let's say you're going to listen to music like edm, rap, rock etc, I would say the Audio Technica ATH-M50x would be the go to headphones because it sounds amazing and very exciting. In my opinion, the Sennheiser HD558 and the M40x would be great for music with a lot of instruments and vocals where you want to feel like you're in front of the singer and hear a lot of clarity and details. So none of these headphones are better than one another, it just depends on what type of sound you prefer and how you will be using these headphones. Above All, the best way to summarize is if you are going to be gaming on Twitch or just for fun and watching movies at home and not much else, then the Sennheiser HD558 and the Audio Technica ATH-M40x are the go to headphones. The HD558 is very comfortable with a really sweet price tag and would be a great option. The M40x would be a great option if you do not like the design of the HD558 and you're going to be using it at the gym traveling etc. and want a more sleek design. I think both sound very similar. If you want all of the above and want more bass with your music, then the M50x would be the go to headphones!
