More fun with electronics!

This one's more of a "necessity is the mother of invention" jobs. My wife is disabled, and largely bed-ridden; she spends a lot of time watching videos, playing games, listening to audiobooks and podcasts, and so on, often using multiple devices at once — say, playing Animal Crossing while a book or show is on in the background. She wants to be able to use her external computer speakers or her headphones, but she also doesn't want to keep switching headphone and speaker cables around — we've both ruined a number of headphones and more than one device's headphone jack by the stress of frequent plugging and unplugging of devices — and while there are switches available so you can, say, push a button to switch your computer between speakers and headphones, they're just a single input.

"What I really need," she decided, "is a mixer — just plug everything in, and pot things up and down when I want them."

I went looking — but struck out on finding a ready-made solution. There are stereo mixers out there, compact units that'll combine multiple audio inputs to one output — but not to two outputs, not in a reasonable price and size range, and they're all intended for semi-pro audio, so they're coming with either ¼" jacks or RCA jacks, not the 3.5mm that everything consumer-level uses now. The closest I got was one on AliExpress:

It had the right inputs, but again, only one output. But then I saw that you could order it without the case (for slightly less money, a little less than $12 shipped) —

.— and figured that I could take off the output jack, feed it into a DPDT switch, and thus have four stereo channels feeding either headphones or speakers at the flip of a switch.

After waiting the usual six weeks for surface shipping from China, I got it and put the hack together. The first version ended up with a latching pushbutton switch, all wrapped in a temporary cardstock case, which worked until the switch stopped latching. So I took the opportunity to rebuild it with a toggle switch, and cased the whole thing in heat-bent styrene.

I call it the MixiSwitch; up to four inputs are switched between two outputs. Everything plugs into the back, and the adjustments are on the front. The case is a single strip of modeling styrene, from the local toy and hobby store; I'd picked it up for a different project but had the piece left over and it fit nicely. The added circuit board is dead-simple — it's just two jacks wired to a switch — and made from bits I already had on hand.

If I were to make another, and actually buy parts, I think I'd try to find a pair of stacking jacks to fit in the place of the output jack, and mount the switch separately in perhaps a 3d-printed case. But this one is working quite well for its purpose, so I'm happy, and more importantly, my wife is happy.

IMHO H&K's approach is perfect for the lunchbox format. They've concentrated on creating separate channel voicings that are fit for purpose and what they have chosen works great for me.

If you are used to using the tone controls on the amp to get the sound you want, this amp takes a different approach. As I see it the tone controls allow you to tweak the sound for the room and stage dynamics you're dealing with. If you don't like the basic channel voicings H&K have given you then this is probably not the amp for you, though I struggle to see what is not to like.

It also take the guess work out of things. I toyed with giving the amp four stars for features as it is a lunch box and lacks the versatility of it's grown up brothers, but given the sheer useability of the amp combined with power soak, red box DI and a effects loop I believe it rates 5 stars for the format.
