Auckland Council GeoMaps
One of the first things to do when researching a site is to find information from the council. Auckland Council has the city plans online using GeoMaps. From this website I can see past and present aerial photos, contour lines, impervious surfaces, kerblines, building footprints, services such as waterpipes and more. I can export a 3D model and print PDFs or image files to scale.

Finding green spaces
Existing apps for finding green spaces. CityGardens is a smartphone app for Paris by Philippe Pujau.  Parkhive app for green spaces in Bristol UK.
Studies show the connection between green spaces and mental health. University of Canterbury professor Simon Kingham has studied the effects of public and private green spaces on physical health. Researchers from Aarhus University studied the effect on mental health. (source:aucklandcouncil).

Potters Park Streetball
Tumblr media
Potters Park has had a slick makeover care of the Albert-Eden Local Board.
What is clear is that the Local Board and the Auckland Council Parks team are well in tune with the community.
They have retained the activities in the park that the locals loved – play and basketball – and jammed in more of the same with added innovation, creativity and fun.
You turn up and can’t help but smile with the sound of kid’s fun screams from the play area circulating with streetball happening on the new ParkLife courts.
Potters Park has always been a destination for streetball with locals travelling from far afield to come play. I have played pick-up here in the past and due to the high-profile site (cnr Dominion and Balmoral Roads) you could always guarantee people would be there to play.
More recently the Pigeons moved in which was a sure sign to the Local Board that it was time to reclaim the courts for the locals.
Tumblr media
The Parklife Court layout maximizes play opportunities with a Full Court Mini and Half Court. This allows 3 games of 3X3 to happen at once or 1 3X3 game and 1 mini full court game at once. All told that is a lot of opportunities to play or practice your shot!
The colour splash on the court and backboard tie in nicely to the other colour elements in the park. The use of the court and backboard surfaces as a canvas for creativity is a use we always encourage.
The mighty Basketball Towers are built tough to withstand a life of dunks, bricks, bank shots, wind and rain.
Tumblr media
“Our challenge is to maximise the use of public space, as it is not abundant in our community, to create vibrant, active spaces where everyone feels welcome. That is precisely what has been achieved at Potters Park.”
Margi Watson, Albert-Eden Local Board
All in all, the Auckland Council Parks team has maximized the use of the space which is a key imperative for the Albert-Eden Local Board. The Albert-Eden community does not have the luxury of a lot of space. Providing spaces for active recreation is a great response to this.
Walks or jogs around a park are great if you have a lot of area. If not then creating punchy designs with great circulation, connections and activities gives locals something to do within limited space. These areas become great places to exert some energy but also just to hang out, socialize and gather. The combined result being enhanced community life.
Since re-opening in January 2017 the courts have been a hit with locals.
The process is straight forward with no building consent required. We assess the site, recommend the best location/layout, issue drawings and costings and work commences.
Tumblr media
Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) supports the initiative to increase the number and quality of outdoor courts.
BBNZ have recognized that outdoor basketball is key to promoting and developing the game. Indoor space is maxed out and investment in gyms is a big step whereas creating outdoor courts is very simple and low cost in comparison.
The growth statistics for basketball are impressive. Basketball participation has increased at secondary school level by 18% in the last 3 years and Basketball is the fastest growing major sport in the country.
The 3X3 version of the game is now internationally legit and is the largest urban team sport in the world with over 250 million players worldwide – the most played recreational sport on the planet!
It is increasingly becoming an important influence in the development of the game worldwide. 3X3 has a World Tour, Open World Championship, U18 World Championship, is at the Youth Olympics and soon to be at the Olympics.
Tumblr media
Let’s promote more outdoor basketball!
Here are the benefits of the Potters Park Court:
— integrates well into the park environment
— provides instant activation
— promotes physical activity
— provides for competitive basketball
— responds to the wider popularity and lack of existing facilities for the sport
— the process is simple for the client

Permatrack series 1/13: A series of images documenting the reinstatement process. Say goodbye to potholes, and prolonged or frequent road closures. Permatrack, by Neuchatel, offers a fast, efficient, and very effective system for repairing potholes, cracks and damaged ironworks. Although it’s a two-man process, with no heavy equipment needed, for this trial bigwigs from the council, and various private contractors, turned out to observe the process.
