The series against sixth-ranked Tennessee almost didn’t happen for the Auburn Tigers. First, just getting on campus seemed to be an insurmountable task. The Tigers went through multiple charter buses that kept breaking down on the road to Knoxville. Then, impending weather disrupted the series, forcing the two teams to play game one on Saturday and a double header on Sunday. Even between games two and three, lightening delays pushed the start of the final game later and later in the day. By the time game three began, the Tigers had to be a little fatigued and a lot uncomfortable.
The Vols had their field house and access to showers and clean uniforms between the games, but the Tigers had to spend the down time in the dugout wearing the same uniforms for hours upon hours. The wear and tear of the grind showed in game three as Auburn just didn’t have enough left in the tank to play. The third game wasn’t quite meaningless, but it was close. In games one and two Auburn dominated the Volunteers to the tune of 10–5 and 3–0, securing a series win.
Along the way, there was a shakeup at the top of the SEC standings. Auburn came into the weekend down the SEC leader board. Alabama was at the top with a record of 7–2 in the conference and was taking on South Carolina. Behind them was Tennessee. Auburn was down the food trough.
By weekend’s end, Auburn was on top tied with Alabama. Had Alabama not salvaged game three against the Gamecocks and Auburn not given away its game three, the Tigers would be alone at the top. Still, the series win against the Vols was huge.
However, SEC rankings, especially at the top of the conference, aren’t that important. Ten of the nation’s Top 25 teams reside in the SEC. NCAA rankings haven’t been updated this week, and the last rankings are from on the 25th of last month. It will be interesting to see how Auburn fares in the poll after losing a series to UGA last week at home before taking this one against the Vols.
It was the Snow Show this weekend. Tannon Snow was incredible at the plate for the Tigers in the first two games, willing them to wins. She was 4-for-4 in game one with two homers while scoring an insane SEVEN RBI’s. That ties the record held by former Auburn great, Kasey Cooper. It was Snow’s second multi-homer game.
Ashlee Swindle earned the win after a lightening-fast leash was pulled on Lexi Handley. The transfer hurler can hit 72 miles an hour with her fastball, but she can also mail a lot of pitches to the backstop. Coach Mickey Dean saw enough after two walks, both of which were followed by wild pitches.
Swindle went the distance though she did …
give up seven hits and three runs, not counting two scores from inherited base runners. Ashlee added two strikeouts as the defense played error-free ball behind her. She is a pitch-to-contact player. She may not get K’s and she may give up hits, but as long as the defense is on its game, she will earn a lot of W’s.
As good as Swindle was at getting the Vols to hit to Tiger defenders, Chardonnay Harris was just as good in game two. Harris was phenomenal in a shutout win, a program first against Tennessee. She had seven strikeouts and scattered four hits with just one walk. The complete game was the first of her young and promising career.
Snow added another dinger in game two while Kendall Veach joined in with one of her own. Alyssa Rivera earned an RBI the hard way when she scored pinch runner Rachel Cook on a single. The Tigers took a 3–0 win for the series win, which helps avenge the home series loss to Georgia last weekend. It was the first Tiger win in Knoxville since 2011.
Game three was a clunker for the Tigers after having to wait an hour for weather to pass. Swindle was back in the circle for the Tigers, but the defense couldn’t back her up. The Volunteer slappers put in a good day’s work against the Auburn defense, which simply could not handle Tennessee’s speed. Swindle did her best to limit the Vols’ power hitters by jamming them inside time and time again. However, the lefty slappers proved tough to get out as they hit multiple balls up the middle, and others simply eluded Tiger defenders.
The pressure on the base paths plus the slappers’ crafty hitting forced Auburn’s defense, specifically shortstop Taylon Snow, into a lot of bad fielder’s choices. Tennessee jumped on Auburn with two scores in the first and never looked back.
Auburn’s lone run came on a fine piece of hitting by Alyssa Rivera. She forced the Vols’ pitcher into a mistake from a second meatball in consecutive pitches. Rivera missed the first, showed frustration, but caught the next one perfectly, homering for the eighth time this season.
Chardonnay Harris made her second appearance but couldn’t stop the Vols from blasting the Tigers 8–1 in the final game of the weekend. Auburn had just two other hits, both of them by pinch hitters Carmyn Greenwood and Makenna Dowel.
Despite the bad series against UGA and the messy game three in Knoxville, Auburn is showing great strides at the plate over last season. Though some of the starters have a long way to go, the top six hitters are hitting above a .300 clip. And Justus Perry has a .500 slugging percentage despite a .276 batting average.
That’s not to say that Auburn doesn’t have nine great hitters on the roster. The issue is that Auburn’s best hitters aren’t also Auburn’s best fielders. Coach Dean just has to find the perfect combination. The Tigers have hit 55 dingers in the season and are on pace to rival the golden years under Clint Myers.
The Tigers host a South Carolina team fresh off of a massive series win against the Crimson Tide. Games one and two will be on the SEC Network+ while game three will be on ESPNU. The series kicks off Friday at Jane B. Moore at 6:00 PM CDT. See ya there!

Qualities of a Great Coach
What makes a Great Coach? This is a question many of us ask ourselves when we step foot into the wide world of sports, as well as the wild world of teaching kids. After, watching one of best Super Regionals it got me thinking about how blessed I’ve been to receive some of the best coaching in the world, by many of these coaches that are headed to OKC. So I wanted to celebrate their greatness & describe what I believe the qualities of a great coach are. All of these coaches have many similarities, but very different approaches which makes them uniquely designed to be great. Here is a breakdown of what I believe they all share:
Leadership -This is someone you want to be like, and you trust in them whole heartedly. It’s hard to follow someone you don’t really trust & trust has to be built. Proactive v. Reactive -Instead of harping on what didn’t happen & acting defeated they find solutions to solve the issue. Losses are the future successes to winning coaches. Understanding -A coach that understands their athletes is also a coach that cares. (In my book they are saints for putting up with 20+ girls) Consistent -Their emotions, reactions, and coaching doesn’t shift much… You know what you’re getting into instead of fearing what’s going to happen next Structured -As much as we hate discipline, it is a must and without it there’s no foundation that can be built for a winning team 6. Sense of Humor -Not everyone is blessed with a funny bone, however, for a coach to laugh at themselves & acknowledge they aren’t perfect is a bonus 7. Creative -These coaches get it done no matter what, and sometimes they have to get creative. This is especially important because you’re dealing with many different personalities. 8. Character -There’s a standard that they live by. At ASU we lived the ASU way & that was established by Coach Myers. We felt like a family because he instilled that in our program. 9. Accountability -They have surrounded themselves with people they can count on, that keep them centered, as well as help create the culture they’re trying to build. 10. Knowledgable -They know the game, bottom line, very little is going to slip through the cracks with these coaches. They study the game, the charts, and they know everything about the opposing team.
As you can see this all takes work, patience, and practice. None of these coaches just stepped in and started winning National Titles, it took time. However, if your dream is to coach & you live to serve rather than being served you’re half way there. Don’t get discouraged by faults, losses, or opinions be encouraged that there are MANY of us out there with the same battles and are having to put in the same amount of work. Coaching is such a blessing & you have an opportunity to change lives not only for the sport, but as these kids move on to being parents, lawyers, wives, etc. Congratulations to the coaches that are WCWS Bound & to the rest of us that are passionately driven to help kids experience the WCWS one day :)

The two touchdowns that Clemson scored, the one that Mercer scored, and Missouri’s first touchdown on Saturday were the only honest-to-goodness touchdowns that this defense has allowed. Auburn’s been fantastic this year on defense, frankly, going from very good to elite. I would venture to say that the only units that compare this year that we’ll see are Clemson’s and Alabama’s. I haven’t seen enough of Georgia yet to make a firm decision on them. SOFTBALL!!

Road trip number two comes our way tomorrow night, as Auburn meets Missouri at 6:30 CST on ESPNU from Faurot Field. Despite the departures of Sean White and Byron Cowart, it almost seems like it’s been a bit of a quiet week. Hopefully that means the team has been hunkered down, working hard, and getting things right as they head out of town for the second time this year.
We’ll have our staff predictions coming later, but we’ll begin today’s look around the internet with another one.
http://bit.ly/2xsJq3O
— Josh Dowdy (@heartofauburn) September 21, 2017
Speaking of intangibles, here’s one of the nuggets you only get by reaching deep into the history books...
When Auburn wins the 1st game, loses the 2nd game, and then wins the 3rd game, Auburn is 10-1 in the 4th game in the last 60 years.
— Josh (@joshdub_) September 21, 2017
I’d like to see what the rest of those seasons looked like, because while this is fun, it means absolutely nothing. Looking at meaningful tidbits, however...
Auburn RT Darius James (neck) went through a full practice today, Gus Malzahn said.
— Josh Vitale (@AUBlog) September 21, 2017
Having James back on the field can only help Auburn’s chances, as the offensive line will likely stay the same tomorrow night. Maybe the run game will have gelled a little more since last weekend, but if it comes down to it, we can always run the WildKam formation into the ground.
Chip Lindsey calls Kamryn Pettway's Wildcat package "The Moose." Which is pretty great.
— Josh Vitale (@AUBlog) September 21, 2017
If you want to recap everything that Gus Malzahn said on Tiger Talk last night, he did mention some things about the punting situation and keeping a hold on the ball like a normal team, both of which have been focused on this week in practice.

Yes, I know how that sounds.
Yes, we’re giving you a wacky Wednesday and shifting things around. Today’s link article comes before bed, to give you plenty to check out on your phone before you try to close your eyes. There’s been a ton going on over the last day or so, and we’ll get you the cliffs notes on all of it here.
Obviously, Auburn’s defensive line depth took a hit with the departure of Byron Cowart yesterday. This was one of the weirder recruiting sagas in recent memory, as Cowart committed to Auburn and then we spent all day waiting and waiting and waiting for that letter of intent to come in. There were rumors that his coach was holding him hostage, or wouldn’t sign his letter, or that he wanted to really go to Florida, among others.
Either way, it wasn’t the best foot to start on with the arrival of Cowart to the Plains, and he struggled from day one to break into the playing rotation. There were rumors he wasn’t happy, and it all finally came to a head as he requested his release from scholarship at Auburn.
“Byron had to do what was best for him and his family, so I just hope nothing but the best for him moving forward.” http://bit.ly/2hhPjeA
— Josh Vitale (@AUBlog) September 19, 2017
We wish him the best in his future endeavors, but it’s a troubling trend as Auburn’s now lost two high-profile players this week alone.
What Cowart’s absence means is that there are opportunities for younger players. Yes, Cowart played on the inside this year, sitting at second-string tackle, but it just means we’ll see more of certain guys on one of Auburn’s strongest units.
Byron Cowart's departure from Auburn could mean more time at defensive tackle for Nick Coe http://bit.ly/2hkkVwk http://pic.twitter.com/GZswjWQ0G9
— Tom Green (@Tomas_Verde) September 19, 2017
We mentioned the other high-profile exit earlier this week. This one wasn’t voluntary, but Sean White’s boot from the team creates an interesting dynamic at the quarterback position.
Sean White's dismissal causes Auburn to "think differently" with new backup quarterback Malik Willis http://bit.ly/2hkkW3m http://pic.twitter.com/6sgHdDnsuv
— Tom Green (@Tomas_Verde) September 19, 2017
So, let’s address the elephant in the room. The offense hasn’t looked great. That’s a given, but there seem to be easily fixable issues, like, you know, PLAYING OUR BIG-PLAY THREATS.
Gus Malzahn: Auburn RB Kam Martin will play more Saturday after 2 weeks of zero carries #WarEagle http://bit.ly/2hkkWAo http://pic.twitter.com/Y5Wh4Sjb6K
— SEC Country Auburn (@SECCountryAU) September 19, 2017
In addition to hopefully seeing Kam Martin once again on the football field, we should see Kerryon Johnson as well. The Tiger offense could go from one guy getting carries to three prime tailbacks getting carries.
Auburn expects 1 player back from injury at Missouri, is "hopeful" about 2 others http://bit.ly/2hkkX7q
— Josh Vitale (@AUBlog) September 20, 2017
It should pick things up with one of the sluggiest areas of the team’s output — the running game. Despite the 11 sacks at Clemson, the running game has done just about nothing in the past two games. Kam Pettway took 34 carries to break the 120 yard mark against Mercer, which is way too low on the production scale. So, is this a concern for the head coach? Yes.
What's Gus Malzahn's "biggest concern" entering SEC play? Correcting Auburn's struggling run game http://bit.ly/2hhq5Nw http://pic.twitter.com/rgViJoiO35
— Tom Green (@Tomas_Verde) September 20, 2017
And with Ian Shannon regressing a bit last weekend, we may go back to a kicking dynamic that we expected we may see a bit this year.
Auburn could turn to Daniel ‘Legatron’ Carlson to kick its punting issues #WarEagle http://bit.ly/2hkkYbu http://pic.twitter.com/8TPEArnCz8
— SEC Country Auburn (@SECCountryAU) September 20, 2017
Now, as for Auburn’s new softball coach. He seems alright. A guy that grew up a big fan of Bo Jackson should fit in just fine in town, and he’s getting all of the right endorsements after taking the job.
"I’m excited for this opportunity for him on a big stage.” @JennieFinch on @AuburnSoftball HC @deanAU_TigersSB http://bit.ly/2hkkemI
— Jeff Shearer (@jeff_shearer) September 21, 2017
But, with as great as Mickey Dean’s hiring sounds, the administration seems to be trying to separate itself from what may or may not have happened with the previous softball regime, without much resolution at all.

Aside from the banner win on the gridiron Saturday afternoon, there was quite a bit to write home about from this weekend on the Plains, starting with the hire of new softball head coach Mickey Dean from James Madison.

Dean averaged nearly 50 wins per year in his five seasons at JMU, and seems to be pretty confident that he’ll be able to continue the success we’ve been accustomed to on the Plains!
"We want to take that excitement and run with it." @BoJackson fan @deanAU_TigersSB introduced as @AuburnSoftball HC http://bit.ly/2w2Ryoz
— Jeff Shearer (@jeff_shearer) September 18, 2017
On the other diamond, Auburn made a hire to replace departed pitching coach Brad Bohannon, who traitorized himself to go lead the program across the state. In his place, we’ve now got an old head coach with a ton of experience.

Back on the football field, Jarrett Stidham found a rhythm on Saturday afternoon, completing 32-37 passes for better than 300 yards in the win over Mercer. It was a pretty historic performance for the Auburn quarterback.
"We were able to spread it out pretty well." » @Jarrett_Stidham#WarEaglehttp://bit.ly/2f4HIvB
— Auburn Football (@AuburnFootball) September 17, 2017
He also completed 18 straight passes, setting an Auburn record in the process, beating Stan White’s mark of 16 straight from 1993.
As for Auburn’s biggest injury question, Darius James was carted off the field in the first half on Saturday, but he seems to be fine, to everyone’s relief.
