The parish church serving the Maltese town of Marsa. THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY IN MARSA Il-knisja tat-Trinita fil-Marsa Over hundred years ago, the population of the part of the inner harbour area known as Marsa was fast increasing after the Porto Nuovo project of the late 19th century. Some 5,000 inhabitants in this locality found it difficult to go to Ħamrun or Floriana for their spiritual needs. So in 1909 this church was built and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The church was built on designs by Giovanni Domenico Debono with the master builder being Michele Mifsud. The foundation stone was laid on Sunday, October 20th, 1909. The construction of the church took two years and nine months. The total cost amounted to an estimated cost of £7000 - an enormous sum for that time! On April 19, 1913 the church was officially opened and declared a parish while the International Eucharistic Congress was taking place in Malta. The church was blessed by the General Vicar of the Diocese of Malta, Monsignor Luigi Attard, and the deputy of the Archbishop of Malta, Pietro Pace. The parish church was entrusted to the care of the Capuchin Friars who were well received by the Marsa people and have been well loved ever since. BALBI THE BENEFACTOR The construction of the Marsa parish church and Capuchin Friary were entirely financed by benefactors Lorenzo Balbi and his wife Carmela née Ozzini, a wealthy childless couple from Valletta. Chev. Balbi, who besides being a businessman also dealt in foreign bonds, is said to have exclaimed that he only had to cut one grape off the whole bunch to finance the building of the church and the adjacent convent, both of which were furnished to the last detail. A set of four bells was also imported from Italy. The kitchen in the convent was fully equipped and each of the friars' cells had all that was required down to a candle and a box of matches! However, within four years of all this, in 1917, Chev. Balbi lost all his foreign investments in the Russian Imperial Bonds which the Bolshevists did not honour on taking power after the revolution in that country. Going analogue on Gozo island - by Eva Hoffmann

If you get to meet different people in Malta over the course of a longer research, you will soon discover, that everybody knows everyone – whether they like each other or not. Reporting on the topic of reproductive rights, interview partners often already knew what we were doing on the island before they even met us. The so called “pro-life” movement is just as connected as the activism pro-abortion through personal ties and informal channels. The fastest way to reach out to somebody therefore is not via social media or mail, but through somebody else who has this person’s number, is her friend, co-worker or worst enemy. 

When we took the ferry towards the north west of the main island in order to speak to a certain Maria Attard, founder of a women’s shelter on the small island of Gozo, we had no phone number, no e-mail address or direct way to contact her in advance. It was our last day of research, but we were determined to find her. After two weeks in Malta, we were also confident, that there might be other ways to find her. 

Above the harbour of Gozo, at the end of a steep and rocky road lies the Debono shelter like a castle from a different time. More than 500 women came here since the 80ies in order to hide their unwanted pregnancies from family and friends on the main island. They would stay in the shelter with Maria Attard, who would look after them until birth and afterwards organise the childrens’ process of adoption. Maria Attard was the last missing piece in our research. When we knocked at the door, nobody opened. The mailbox was full of letters, it seemed, nobody had been emptying it since a longer time. After circling the building for a time, we decided, to actively search for Attard. But where should we start to look for a single person on an island with over 30.000 inhabitants?

If you want to find somebody in a rural area, the best way of transport is hitch hiking. Possibly, the driver knows somebody who knows somebody who might know the person you are looking for. We took a car to Victoria, the capital of Gozo and started walking. In a narrow street, aside the touristic main road, an old woman was knitting a bracelet. Her wrinkled fingers quickly moved in a long-practiced manner. She wanted us to buy one of her traditional art works, we refused, but slowly developed a conversation. On my phone, I showed her a picture of Maria Attard, the person we were looking for. Her face lightened up in recognition, she knew her best friend, she said. Her name was Rita. If we find Rita, we might find Maria as well. She pointed at the end of the narrow street, we should ask for Rita over there.

When we arrived at the corner the old lady was pointing at, an old man came out of a garage he transformed into a small workshop. Mentioning Rita and Maria to him apparently did not ring any bell, but he pointed at another old man passing by. We repeated our small monologue and the man, in a natural manner mentioned, that Rita was his cousin. He pointed at the next corner, where we should ask again for her house.

“What is her nickname?”, the guy in the bakery asked, “in Gozo, we all go by nicknames, since everybody has the same surname.” We did not know. After two hours of walking around, I felt fed up with the situation. It felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. Maria was still hopeful. Knocking on a random door, asking these two names again and again, she finally found a woman who walked us over to Rita’s house. Rita, an old lady with a warm smile, just arrived from shopping. She invited us into her home, a garage that was functioning as a living room and kitchen at the same time, and apologised for not having anything there for lunch. It turned out, Maria Attard, the woman we had been looking for all morning, has been sitting on this kitchen table the very same day, hours before we arrived. She would meet her again in the afternoon and take us with her. Coming with her best friend, we were welcomed in a place, that would have had nothing for us than closed doors and high walls if we did go analogue for this last day of our research.

Cette vie semi-végétative de Mikage, l'héroïne de Kitchen, est un jour troublée par un garçon, Yûichi Tanabe, qui l'invite à partager l'appartement où il loge avec sa mère. Mikage s'installe donc en parasite chez les Tanabe : tombée instantanément amoureuse de leur magnifique cuisine, elle est aussi séduite par Eriko, la mère de Yûichi Eriko, personnage ambigu et pur, transgenre à la beauté éblouissante, qui, traverse le récit comme un soleil éphémère.

Femme trans Elle est secondaire mais pas mal présente et importante pour les personnages principaux. Quelques femmes trans ou hommes travestis (on ne sait pas) en fond.

La thématique trans n'est pas au cœur de l'histoire mais on s'y attarde pas mal. TW : mort, violences verbales (mégenrage), meurtre

Avis de Elann :

Ces deux nouvelles ont le deuil pour thème principal et point commun donc ce n'est clairement pas joyeux, à ne pas lire dans un mauvais moment. En dehors de ça, c'est une lecture en dehors du temps, assez planante. J'ai préféré l'héroïne de la deuxième nouvelle même si cette dernière est plus courte. En revanche, pour moi (et pas mal de gens, apparemment), le personnage marquant et lumineux de ce livre, c'est Eriko. C'est une femme trans donc, dont le point de vue, bien que rarement évoqué, est très intéressant. Malheureusement, son fils et l'héroïne la mégenrent très souvent lorsqu'ils parlent d'elle. Même si elle est extraordinaire et a l'air de s'en moquer royalement, ça fait grincer des dents.

Avis de Zinzoline :

Ce livre est hyper bien écrit, avec beaucoup de tendresse. Il est assez court, mais permet tout de même un très bon développement des trois personnages principaux, Mikage, Yûichi et Eriko. Les relations entre les persos sont très mignonnes et ils ont des liens des forts. Les seuls points négatifs sont (sachant que je ne suis pas trans donc j'ai pu en louper) parfois du mégenrage d'Eriko et le fait que Eriko meure tuée par un mec transphobe au début du livre (les persos queers qui ont une espérance de vie nulle tmtc).

The Cabin is a project designed by h2o architectes in 2012, covers a area of 55 m2 and is located in Aravis, Les Ménuires France.

The apartment is situated in the Menuires skiing resort. As an end addition to a 1960’s building, it offers a triple orientation which was not exploited by the original building. The commission was challenging: to increase the living-room surface without modifying any of the structural or supporting elements, to create 2 bathrooms instead of one, to maintain the same number of beds, that is to say 8 beds for 55 square meters. To maximize the use of space, we decided to overturn the perspective: not to try and make the furniture fit into the flat, but rather the flat into the furniture! A large wooden curve crosses the entire surface of the flat. Around it are gathered all the basic functions of the house allowing for a large free space towards the windows which offer a panoramic view of the mountains. This piece of furniture includes in its thickness different necessary facilities: storage space, superimposed sleeping units, a reading corner, kitchen and bathroom (back to back). It is the piece of furniture itself which structures the space. A curtain device allows for greater privacy around the sleeping units. The niches can be used in several ways: as storage or as interior windows between the two sides of the wooden wall. The result is playful and cozy: in the evening, what pleasure after a day of skiing to climb up to one of the little sleeping nests with its own little niche and bedside light! 10.07 - 16.07

Montag - Lulu’s letzter Abend..

Zum Frühstück hatte ich (mal wieder) mit Paul gequatscht. Paul ist für die Kantine, das Kantinenessen und mehr verantwortlich. Er hatte mich gefragt, ob ich ihm ein Dankesbrief schreiben könnte. Ich sagte ihm, er solle später ins Büro kommen und mir sagen, was genau das drin stehen soll.

Als ich im Büro war, kam Paul mit einem Zettel (wo er einen Dankesbrief vorformuliert hatte). Daraus hatte ich dann den finalen Brief geschrieben. Irgendwie war ich schon ein bisschen stolz auf mein Endergebnis :D

Ich hatte auch eine E-Mail an Karl und Francesco geschrieben, ob wir uns nächste Woche mal zusammen setzten könnten und mein Zertifikat für die Uni/ meinen Lebenslauf fertig machen könnten. Danach die Woche arbeite ich ja schon nicht mehr und ich würde das gerne alles fertig haben :D

Nach dem Mittag war das Büro leer gefegt! Kennt ihr diese Westernfilme, wo die Steppenläufer durch das Bild sausen? Diese Musik hatte ich im Kopf :D

Im HR Department war ich mit der neuen HR Managerin alleine, da Francesco in Spanien ist um seine Master Arbeit zu verteidigen und Noel hatte familiäre Probleme. Die neue Managerin heißt Hilda und ist wirklich eine taffe Frau, aber auch total nett :D Sie hatte ihre Tochter mit auf Arbeit, da die Kleine schon Schulschluss hatte. Sie hatte mir ein Bild von mir gemalt, was echt niedlich aussieht :D

Abends war ich mit Lulu und Monia ins Restaurant "Duo" gegangen, da es Lulu's letzter Abend hier war. Jayne war mit ihrer Schwester unterwegs und Chelsy's Papa war hier, weswegen sie mit ihm zu Abend aß. Das Essen dort war echt mega lecker! Wir musste zwar lange warten, aber das hatte uns der Kellner schon beim Hinsetzen gesagt. Danach waren wir zum Buggiba Beach gegangen und hatten uns dort noch einen Frozen Yoghurt gegönnt. Es war ein toller Abend :)

Dienstag - Schlaflos in Malta

Frühstück hatte ich mit Monia, Jayne und Lulu (Chelsy musste arbeiten). Gegen 11 Uhr hatte Lulu dann das Hotel verlassen. Und weg ist die erste Praktikantin.. sehr seltsames Gefühl. Irgendwie fühlte es sich an, als ob Lulu zu Besuch nach Frankreich fährt und in ein paar Tagen wiederkommt..

Zum Mittag saß ich mit Michaela (ehemalige Rezeptions-Kollegin von Lulu, jetzt arbeitet sie im Marketing) zusammen. Da hatten wir Pläne für Samstag geschmiedet. Ich wusste, dass Monia auch off war. Wir wollen vielleicht zur Dragonara Cave (Coral Lagoon), Paradise Bay.

Nach dem Mittag waren Dalziel und Karl ins das neue Büro gezogen. Ab nächste Woche werde ich vielleicht auch dort arbeiten. Meine letzte Arbeitswoche wuhuu :D

Nachmittags im HR hatte ich E-Mails beantwortet und wieder Dinge archiviert.

Zum Abendbrot hatte mir Chelsy eine Nachricht geschrieben, dass sie mit ihren Eltern zu Abend isst. Jayne war bei ihrer Schwester und Monia musste arbeiten (ich wusste noch nicht, ob sie ihre Pause schon genommen hat oder jetzt nehmen kann). Also war ich runter zur Rezeption und geschaut, ob Monia Zeit hatte. Zu meinem Glück konnte sie ihre Pause nehmen, somit konnten wir beide zusammen Abendbrot essen.

Als ich zurück auf das Zimmer gegangen war, war ich ganz alleine. Allerdings war das auch mal schön. Nur einschlafen konnte ich nicht ^^ Erst als die Tür ins Schloss gefallen war und jemand ins Zimmer kam, war ich weg.

Mittwoch - die Bachelorette

Am Mittwochmorgen hatte ich mit Monia gefrühstückt. Jayne und Chelsy hatten ausschlafen.

Später kam Monia zu mir ins Büro und wir hatten zusammen unsere Farewell Einladung geschrieben & versendet. Das war wirklich ein komisches Gefühl.

Danach hatte ich Danica gebeten eine Evaluation über meine Fähigkeiten auszufüllen. Sie hatte sich dafür wirklich mega viel Zeit genommen und Mühe gegeben! Ich wollte eigentlich gegen 11 Uhr los nach Attard, aber da war Danica noch mit schreiben und ausfüllen zu tun. Gegen 11:30 Uhr konnte ich dann los.

In Attard war ich zuerst zum Presidents Kitchen Garden gegangen. Dort hatte ich den Berliner Buddy Bär gefunden. Das war richtig witzig! Ein Stückchen zu Hause hier in Malta :D Außerdem gab es dort einen kleinen Tierpark mit Eseln, Schafe, Vögel, Fische, .., ein Restaurant und Garten mit Früchten.

Anschließend war ich zur Villa Bologna gelaufen. Dort stand ich vor der Tür und hatte geklingelt. Es hatte mir aber keiner aufgemacht. Somit war ich zurück gelaufen zu einem Shop, wo der Eingang zu den Gärten ausgeschildert war. Dort hatte ich mich mit dem Verkäufer unterhalten und er hatte mich für umsonst reingehen lassen. Es war etwas ausgetrocknet, aber trotzdem wie ein kleines Märchenschloss. Es wurde auch gerade alles für eine Hochzeit vorbereitet.

Zum Schluss war ich noch zum Lija Belvedere Tower gelaufen. Das war einfach nur ein Turm in der Mitte eines Kreisels. Abends ist er beleuchtet. So wartete ich auf den nächsten Bus nach Ta Qali. Aber der Bus kam und kam nicht.. somit war ich zur nächsten Haltestelle gelaufen, wo ein Bus nach Qawra (zurück zum Hotel) fahren sollte. Aber auch der kam nicht. Also war ich nach 1h warten und ärgern und schwitzen in der sengenden Hitze zur dritten Haltestelle. Da konnte ich endlich mit dem Bus zurück nach Qawra fahren.

Abends war Chelsy im Zimmer und hatte sich fertig gemacht. Danach kam Jayne rein, mit der ich dann etwas länger erzählt hatte. Das tat echt gut! Sie meinte auch, dass wir uns schon ewig nicht mehr gesehen hatten. Aber am Ende des Abends waren beide wieder bei ihren Familienmitgliedern.

Monia konnte auch keine Pause machen zum Abendbrot, somit musste ich alleine essen. Danach hatte ich "Die Bachelorette" geschaut. Jaa naja.. ich hatte nichts besseres zu tun :D

Donnerstag - Unite with Tomorrowland

Im Event Büro hatte ich heute alles gemacht. Für Michelle ein Skript erstellt, welche Schritte sie befolgen muss um die lunch tags und das Menu zu erstellen. Moustafa wollte von mir ein paar Übersetzungen haben und Ivan musste ich bei seinen Computerproblemen helfen.

Francesco war ab heute wieder im Büro und hatte 150 E-Mails in seinem Postfach. Ich hätte eigentlich länger bleiben müssen, aber ich war mit Aby verabredet. Wir wollten zusammen an den Strand und ich hatte ihr vor ein paar Wochen schon mal wegen der Arbeit abgesagt. Francesco war aber auch so fertig, dass wir dann beide gegen 17 Uhr abgehauen waren.

Kimi kommt in der letzten Woche. Da findet auch das "Unite with Tomorrowland" statt für das ich dann heute die Karten gekauft hatte. Es ist mein letzter Tag hier und die Party geht bis 2 Uhr in der Nacht, also mal schauen, was das wird :D

Nachmittags war ich mit Aby zu Mcces gegangen. Wir hatten uns Chicken Nuggets und Pommes geteilt. Danach waren wir zum Buggiba Beach gegangen und uns in die Sonne gelegt. Die Hitze war heute auszuhalten, der Wind ging.

Freitag - tags tags tags..

Beim Frühstück wurde ich von einem der Küchenhelfer unterbrochen. Er wollte wissen, wie es mir geht, wo ich herkomme, wann ich wieder gehe, blabla. Ich wollte doch einfach nur meine Ruhe.. ^^ Er erzählte mir, dass er auch manchmal in Deutschland ist und das wir uns mal treffen könnten. Uff, das war mir zu viel und ich war einfach gegangen^^

Wieder im Zimmer hatte ich eine Nachricht von Danica auf dem Handy: "Wo sind die Plakate?" Gestern hatte sie mich darum gebeten 3 Plakate für das Luzzu Lido zu machen, da es heute geschlossen wird für ein privates Event. Ich sollte als Vorlage das Bild nehmen, welches Julia auf facebook gepostet hat. Nur: Julia hatte kein Foto auf Facebook gepostet bis zu meinem Schluss. Deswegen wollte das frühs machen, aber das Luzzu Lido öffnet schon um 8:00 Uhr und ich fange erst 9:00 Uhr an. Naja im Endeffekt hatte Danica es alleine gemacht, nur ein einfaches Plakat. Ich hatte später die tags für die beiden Veranstaltungen (Mittag und Abendbrot) gemacht.Zu guter Letzt gingen die tags für das Mittag auch noch “verloren” und ich durfte diese noch einmal machen.

Mit Ivan war ich zusammen Mittag essen in der Kantine und das Essen war seeeehr enttäuschend, aber die Brötchen waren lecker :D

Nachmittags hatten Ivan und Danica im Büro gesungen :D

Als Danica eine E-Mail von der Kundin für das BBQ abends erhalten hatte, war die gute Laune kurz getrübt. Ich musste die tags noch einmal machen und diesmal drauf schreiben, wo Gluten und Laktose drin waren.

Samstag - Pläne

Am Samstag hatte ich frei. Allerdings war ich drin geblieben, da das Wetter wieder sehr heiß war. Ich hatte das Zimmer wieder ein bisschen sauber gemacht und schon die ersten Sachen in meine Koffer gepackt z.B. meine Arbeitskleidung, die ich definitiv nicht mehr brauche. Nächstes Wochenende will ich den ersten Koffer schon fertig packen und in den anderen dann nur noch den Rest der letzten Woche packen. Vielleicht schicke ich auch nochmal ein Paket nach Hause, falls ich die 23kg überschreiten sollte.

Monia war zwar auch off, aber sie musste ihre Bachelorarbeit schreiben. Monia's Freundin kommt nächste Woche und da hat Monia sich die Tage off genommen, Samstag gehört nicht dazu. Somit wollen Michaela und ich nächste Woche zur Dragonara Cave, Paradise Bay.  

Nächsten Freitag gibt es ein BBQ vom Hotel am Buggiba Beach, wo wir alle als Interns hingehen werden. Das wird bestimmt richtig cool! Und ist ein guter Start in meine letzte Woche hier auf Malta.

Sonntag - Spring rolls

Heute war nicht viel los im Büro. Kurt war ab und zu im Office und auch Moustafa war des Öfteren da. Jedes Mal kam er rein und sagte: "Ah du bist glücklich, dass Frans nicht da ist, oder?" Er nennt mich auch immer Frans, weil ich an Frans Computer arbeite.

Danica kam gegen 16 Uhr. Wir hatten uns kurz über ihren Urlaub unterhalten (sie fährt zu ihrem Freund nach Ungarn und danach nach Budapest zu Formel 1 :D

Abendbrot hatte ich mit Jayne gegessen und morgen ist ja wieder Asian night. Allerdings werde ich mit Aby in St. Julians zu Abend essen, da das unser letzter gemeinsamer Abend wird :/ Jayne munterte mich auf und sagte, dass sie mir ein paar spring rolls (Frühlingsrollen) sichern wird. Wie liiiieb :D  

Duo Restaurant - Citrus chicken salad (gebackene Hähnchenbrust, Orangen, Lauch, Yoghurt und Knoblauch Dressing, Salat, Weintrauben) - sehr sehr lecker!
