Here we are again. This is a post to remind folks that in no way and in no universe does ‘No’ means anything other than ‘No’. This is not up for discussion or debate.

Attached herewith are screenshots of a conversation I had with the user named @stormkitty97 over the past week and I will get into why I believe that this is abhorrent behaviour. If you’ve been following my posts for the two days, yes this is the issue regarding my fic 晒太阳 which is posted here on AO3 and originally here on Tumblr as a fic response to an Anon prompt I received.

And at the end, all they had to say was this

So, here’s why I am making this post and here is why I am not okay with what happened:

This individual has not expressed a willingness to understand or respect my wishes. They have exhibited behaviours that are consistent with someone who intends to proceed with their intentions regardless of whatever I have told them.

There is a very clear distinction between ‘continuing’ and ‘rewriting’, and this falls in the latter. I only agreed to this individual’s request because they stated they would like to ‘continue’ my piece (see Visual No.1). In no way was it made clear to me during the period they sought my permission that they would like to ‘rewrite’ - and this includes ‘adding on’, ‘editing’, ‘changing’ - any part of my piece.

I repeatedly expressed that I do not condone, agree or approve of them rewriting my work to pass off as their own. If they had wanted to do an original piece of their own, why did they deliberately write to me asking to ‘continue’ my fic and then send me a copy pasted Google doc of my work with what they had called ‘small changes’? I believe that from the beginning, they had no intentions of doing a ‘continuation’ and instead had wanted to ‘rewrite’ my work to pass of as their own.

I have no issue with people writing fics based on fics or random headcanons that I wrote. It’s fandom! That’s part of the fun, in my honest opinion! It’s been done before and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s lovely efforts and I consider it quite an honour. But this person isn’t doing that. This person is blatantly telling me to my face that they would like to copy paste my stuff and use as their first chapter after, what they call, “if I change it enough so it’s not using any of your original words”. How would I be okay with this? How can or should I be okay with this? This individual said this even after me telling them ‘no’ repeatedly and even after me telling them the parameters of what my permission includes (see Visuals 3, 4, 6, 9)

So, what now?

This individual has rescinded my access to the Google doc and I no longer can see what they’re doing to what they’re calling “Chapter One” of their work. But before I was denied access, I managed to screenshot whatever progress they have made and if anyone wants them, I will include them in a reblog.

I do 100% believe that they will post that fic and there’s nothing much I can do about it. But what I can do is make this post. There are certain fandom etiquettes that you do not violate, there are lines you do not cross. I have repeatedly done my level best to make what I am comfortable with clear and distinct in my disclaimers and how my works can be accessed especially on AO3. I know I can’t stop everything and worse still, I can’t know every nook and cranny of the whole wide web. What I can do is just these small things.

My intent in making this post is not to tell people to spam or flame or harass this individual. They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. I’m just calling out what I see as unacceptable behaviour. Once this post goes live, I will be blocking them. If anyone knows this person and is trying to defend them, please don’t. I will exercise the block button liberally.

I didn't get a chance to shoot the whole road, but I know that the big H&M billboard is there. Somehow. 8 is the Container Hotel from the Hotel mystery. This is the one. Couldn't get in coz it is half past one in the morning and getting in would be trespassing. I added a few more just in case anyone can pick out stuff that my inebriated brain can't at the moment. There's something natural about it. The way he's able to lean up a little and brush the hair out of his face, pressing his lips to his forehead in a soft, tender kiss. Maybe time stops for a moment, maybe it doesn't—that's not what matters. Only that the smile on his face is gentle when he meets those magenta eyes that are so familiar to him, and he knows they don't need to speak a word about it.

"...Thanks, for today, Rafayel. Even I'll admit I needed a little break."

rafayel is rather elated from their little get away, even if it were just for a day; it would be a day that would etched in his mind from this day onward. he doesn't know what to expect, his eyes locked on thomas when he approaches him and his fingers twitch when he notices him leaning up and he has to hold himself back from holding onto his waist as he simple closes his eyes to the kiss on his forehead. it makes something in his chest flip and he has to chuckle as if to hide it.

but when he reaches out to grab onto thomas' hand and he intertwines their fingers like they're simple made for one another's to hold, he doesn't speak much of it, but as he listens to the male, he brings their hands up as he presses his lips against the back of his hand.

"i should thank you... but even allowing me to bring you to that place." rafayel would like to think that thomas knows what he truly means when he says that. our place. he brings their hands down before he reluctantly lets go of thomas', as he speaks quietly. "now you have another place to find me if i... disappear or run off somewhere."

How Thomas would react if someone calls him 'Tommy'? Would he hem and haw because what part of this successful, mature, respectable business man screams 'Tommy' to you?

But if Jeremiah can be Jemmy then Thomas can be Tommy.

It's the nickname that comes out when he's being pouty because you cannot convince me one of Rafayel's acquaintances isn't at least a little bit of a drama queen.

For people asking how to find a good balance between staying informed and not obsessing, here's what has helped me most:

Follow only two news outlets: a national one and a local one. Neither are prone to click-baity headlines, which helps as well. Both are reputable and middle-of-the-road in terms of political bias.

Follow them not on social media, but more like "reading the morning newspaper and watching one news show at night" style: I have an RSS feed app that congregates the headlines from the above two sources, and I check it once in the morning and once at night (if that). This means I'm not inundated everywhere all the time, but at a time of my choosing.

Corollary to this: no notifications on my phone. I get notifications for messages from specific people, for emails in a very strongly spam-protected account, and that is *it*. Anything else, I see if and when I decide to open the respective app. *I decide*, not someone pushing notifications. Not even for Tumblr. It's all off.

Mute any keywords for news that trigger you (if you feel like you mustn't, here's your permit: I herewith give you express permission to protect yourself from any such topic), as well as news that upsets you - especially if you can't do anything about it and it doesn't impact you. I have A LOT of American news buzzwords and names blocked, because I am not US-American, don't live there, can't vote there, and it just upsets me and I can't do anything about it.

If I do see posts about something like that that weren't caught by my blocklist, I mute them individually (thanks, Xkit!), or add a new word to the blocklist.

This includes fundraising posts, if that upsets you (for example because you don't have money to spare or don't have the spoons to vet such posts). Again, if you need permission to look away, let me give you it: you don't have to, if it upsets you. Not even to signal boost! Protecting your mental health is worth it. I have closed my asks completely, and messages for people who don't follow me - I was getting just oodles of fundraising asks that I could not mentally handle, and had to cut that out of my Tumblr experience.

I also block or unfollow users that have doom-y vibes, mean vibes, who mainly blog upsetting stuff. And I make it a habit to reblog, on my own blog, political posts only if they have at minimum something actionable attached to the upsetting part, such as templates to write to your representatives, reputable petition links, etc.

I come to Tumblr to have a good time. It is valid to curate your Tumblr experience in such a way that you *have* a good time here. And this is the way I have chosen. Last but not least:

In the lead up to elections in your area, if and when you want to be informed about who you vote for, by all means take a specific time frame (say, an hour every Saturday or something) to look up candidates and what they're running on, as well as past decisions they've made.

Picking a time frame for this will help you not obsess, and still get the info you need.

Make that time frame as small as necessary to work for you, and stick to it.

Check the reputability of the sources you find!

You are allowed to not fill every waking hour with upsetting shit. You are allowed to look away. (I *liberally* block any post who tries to "raise awareness" by trying to guilt-trip me into looking. That shit is not worth anyone's time.) You are allowed to find good news and surround yourself with them. You are allowed to rest and recuperate and laugh and be merry; you don't have to (make yourself) suffer because the world is bad for someone else.

Yes, practice compassion. But, view your own compassion as a finite resource (because it is! Compassion fatigue is a thing!), and be mindful where you turn it to!
