Does this shot from Dungeon Meshi episode 16 remind you of anything?
...Maybe this shot from episode 11?
Well it should, because it was Animated by the same guy, Atsushi Yoneda! (米田 温) (Probably. He was credited for a key frame a few seconds later, and it looks very similar, so I'm fairly confident it's his work.)
While breaking down the animation in Dungeon Meshi, I naturally tend to focus a lot on key animators Kai Iakarashi and Ichigo Kanno because of their highly recognizable and stylized motion that has defined the series,
But while Yoneda's work is less immediately recognizable (and less ubiquitous), I also appreciate his penchant for realism. Laios's face, which just a second ago was approachably cartoony, is now uncomfortably detailed - his nose and eyes become real, human and volumetric instead of simplified indications, and his teeth suddenly become individual teeth instead of just a line.
Just as the snappy, exaggerated movements and simplified shapes work well to heighten the energy in the most frantic moments, this more straightforward movement and grounded, realistic detail often brings it all back down to earth and contextualizes whatever crazy decision was just made in the real human experience that comes as a consequence of it: diving through a goop wall (with your mouth open for some reason), launching yourself off a cooking pot towards the face of an angry dragon, or even getting voluntarily engulfed in tentacles. (He also seems to be the go-to tentacle guy for the series so far) Yoneda is always there to show the reality right after the split-second decision.
And that contrast between realism and stylization is sort of a theme throughout this episode, from the Ushi-Oni depicted in a different style to the rest of the world, to this scene where Shuro's realistic stare of disbelief clashes with the cartoonish reverse-shot of Laios cheerfully explaining why he was eating a brick. I get into all that in more detail in this video where I broke down the entire episode, so if you found this interesting, consider checking it out!
Thanks for reading.

Ryuuzaki sure gave me a lot of feels and food for thought this chapter that I can’t quite put my finger on it. Yoneda Sensei’s characters are always so real and so layered that it won’t cross your mind that they are just two dimensional fictional characters.

Why The Dungeon Meshi Adaptation Worked So Well
The final episode of Dungeon Meshi season 1, (ep. 24) is like if you took all the best parts of the series so far, all the elements that make it what it is, arranged them all into a luscious charcuterie board, and scraped the whole thing into your mouth in one go like the hungry little bastard ye are.
Series director Yoshihiro Miyajima has shown his dedication to the story and ability to stay true to the source material while enhancing the most important elements and making adjustments when needed to better fit the medium, and that's on full display here with the final two anime original scenes that hint toward the future of the plot and take what would have been a good but not amazing ending for the season and turn it into a great one.
As well as Nobutoshi Ogura's storyboards, whose symmetry and point-of-view and reflection shots always add a touch of foreboding and personality to what's already there in the manga.
Or the addition of color to the scene in the tram where the deep green benches and warm orange glow of electric lighting gives it the comforting atmosphere of respite from the hectic action that came before it -- or a calm before the storm (?)...
But most obvious to me in particular was they carved out a spot for many of the eccentric key animators who have defined the visual style of the show (and who I've pointed out specifically in past episodes of my breakdown series) to go nuts and do what they do best.
Ichigo Kanno's bombastic action with stylized character designs and insanely detailed wrinkles and shadows:
Atsushi Yoneda's clean line work and uncomfortable realism:
Haruki's character acting and subtlety:
Despite the slight awkwardness of having to finish off the changeling plot in the first half, this really is a culmination of everything that's come before and a great end to the season.
There's a whole lot more where this came from, and I get a lot more into the details of the animation in this video where I broke down the entire episode in detail, so if that's something you're interested in, check it out!
youtube
Thank you for reading, and double-dog-thank you if you've been here through this whole series -- I had just started trying to figure out how to use tumblr when I started making these breakdown posts and the response has been amazing both on here and on youtube, so thanks!

So, animators/artists on twitter often tend to do little sketches and illustrations announcing their participation in an anime episode. I thought I'd do a post collecting some of the pieces I could find for ep 3 of dungeon meshi. I'll link the original announcement tweets too of course.
Episode 3

Sho Ooi

It’s that time again
Let’s start with the color pages, which are gorgeous. I especially like that Yashiro - who has a nonstop sexual appetite - got worn out by Doumeki, who wants to continue. That makes me irrationally happy; as does Doumeki’s need to bind himself to Yashiro.
I know we’re all hype that Ryuuzaki’s name is Atsushi, but we also got a name for Chesnut Dude and friend: Amaguri & Co. I’m sure we’ll see more of them since they’re sort of Yashiro’s private army now.
Speaking of Hirata, I love how people can just get casually stabbed in this chapter and walk around for awhile like everything is fine. Seriously though how do Hirata and Ryuuzaki stand/sit that long with a stab wound? I know Yashiro is gorgeous but he really made Ryuuzaki forget that he was bleeding? None of that is normal.
And now that Hirata is healing where will the plot go? Back to Yashiro/Doumeki for a bit and we’ll get to see the resolution of Yashiro leaving. I hope Yoneda Kou does what she usually does and surprises us, even thought he left maybe Yashiro will be more responsive to Doumeki than we think? *prays*
Besides, Hirata just gave something very dangerous to Yashiro: time to think. My Flawless Son is strategic and he'll probably come up with a plan to get Hirata right where he wants him. So far he’s survived getting shot, stolen Hirata’s men, wrecked Hirata’s drug plot (which was going to get him money/position in a new family), and now Hirata’s whole game is out. They know Hirata’s motives and his hiding spots too; he’s running out of options.
Yashiro looking out the window away from Ryuuzaki as Ryuuzaki studies him is one of the many deep parallels to chapter 14. I really like what Yashiro says, that if he was a woman, things would be less complicated; he knows how Ryuuzaki feels. BTW their give-and-take about Yashiro’s loose ass had me in stitches.
I love that Yashiro is so beautiful that he makes men mad. Ryuuzaki was angry about Yashiro’s beauty as he lost consciousness, and when Misumi first saw Yashiro he got angry too.
Finally:
