remember that time i invented an entire mirialan anthropology document and have been continuously building and working on my headcanons for them for like literally two years. anyways, there’s a midwinter holiday called the illumination. here’s atro and her widowed dad celebrating it together : )
under the cut, i’ve put more fun lore on the illumination!
-this holiday celebrates the rewriting and recovery of original holy texts after the fall of the sith empire and the restoration of mirialan traditional spiritualism
-there’s one monk who was said to be very young that was the guy who rewrote the original text and is kind of the central hero and is considered one of the force sensitive seers that they also say ascended to be one in the song (that’s how mirialan spirituality treats the force, i have a lot of thoughts on this philosophically and a lot of resentment of the “primitive force worship” moniker used by most lore books, i also have a lot more in depth stuff on this but whatever!)
-cleaning for this holiday is a BIG thing, plenty of people clean out their whole house for this because it’s supposed to be about renewal.
-candles are kept lit all night and usually a different family member tends them all night, parents and children often do it together and it’s a family thing. often votives and holders are passed down as heirlooms.
-candlelit caroling is a huge thing because songs and poetry are very holy. most songs are about family stories and inheritances and poetry about creating things. a very popular song in this season is one that is just all the colors, and beautiful things in each of them.
-unmarried young people usually are encouraged to wear white during this holiday and the following few days. widowers/divorcees sometimes do too.
-most people don’t travel during this holiday bc it’s less of a festive family time and more of a religious vigil and you’re supposed to be present in your home for it, wherever you live.
-mutual aid networks are already a big part of mirialan culture but this is really the time where people just Do More for others. especially welcoming strangers into the home is encouraged.
-because this holiday is the celebration of the written word to some extent, libraries bookshops etc will often host events or parties in the evenings and change their hours accordingly. late night concerts and recitals are also a big part of this holiday. night markets and dances for the more social are also pretty big.
-being able to stay up all night for a vigil at home is a rite of passage for kids, though you don’t have to hold to a fast if you can’t stay up all night (mostly so people don’t starve the elderly, sick, or little kids for holidays).
-it’s considered bad luck for people to get tattooed on this holiday for no real good reason, it just Is.
-gift giving isn’t really a thing during this holiday but it’s pretty common to write cards and letters because this is a celebration of the written and spoken word.
-the holiday is probably the third most important holiday on mirial proper but it’s REALLY popular with diasporic or mixed mirialan populations so it’s often the one more non-mirialans know about.

All of your OCs (or just whoever you want), question 19. 19 just looks like a lot of fun.
19: How would a stranger who had just met them describe them?
Atro: Atro exudes very tired energy and very few people really have the skills of perception to see past that to the genuine drive and passion right away. I think she's very easy, on first impression, to give the impression of someone who needs, more than anything, a hot cup of tea and a nap. She's also a little bit frightening, mostly because she's very intense and seems touchy. A stranger would probably notice that she parts crowds easily without even trying, just because nobody wants to get too close. She's the human equivalent of dry ice.
Tyche: Strangers get a lot of things off her. One who's smarter than your average pedestrian would notice that she has hungry eyes like she's almost a cat-- and she is very cat like, in that she sees herself as the predator instead of prey. Graceful, a little tightly compressed-- but the easy charm is probably what strangers would notice first. She smiles easily, she flirts easily, and she has this magnetic presence that just pulls people's attention in.
Cyra: Beloved, I think people see Cyra and immediately think "oh, she's SUPER fucked up" right off the bat. She wears her heart on her sleeve. There is very little intrigue to her personally. Most of the people she has worked with at least feel a little bit guilty about the child soldier thing because it is obvious that even though she got her positions and status because she is genuinely competent, she definitely shouldn't be there, because she's clearly using busy work to avoid the insurmountable family issues (particularly with her father) that she's got. Like....strangers would go "oh. so that teenager is out here making herself busy as hell so she doesn't have to face all her trauma" after about three minutes of conversation, it's that obvious. I also think they'd think she's a little bit silly and frivolous, which she-- she sort of is. She has a sense of humor characterized by absurdism and making jokes about how goofy the rules she so stringently follows are, and it is really endearing.
Enlil: If Atro is a freezer, they're a space heater, and they just give off nurturing vibes. They're a warm, comforting person, but not in the stifling, over-eager friendly way. The kind of way that is slow, and quiet, and soft. He and his wife are two kinds of cats and he's the sort of cat who will sit on you and make biscuits for warmth when you feel poorly. I also think most people's first impression of him is that he used to be a mess and he's over his ~*wacky adventures*~ now (he isn't) but at least he doesn't give off party animal energy anymore. He used to. He really, REALLY used to. But he mellowed out. I don't think people would immediately see him as a threat, either, but honestly, they ought to, in my opinion. The anger of a gentle man is not something to mess with.

i am honest to god obsessed with atro ashemi-vianno going from being one of the most famous mechanics in the rebellion during the imperial era-- for her weapons modifications, ship builds, things like that-- finally "retiring" from that in her late twenties and early thirties, and following her real passion of designing better functioning prosthetics and mobility aids because nobody helped her when she and her friends needed them, and now she wants to help people beyond "normal" modifications. her husband, for example, loses and arm and an eye, and a lot of her designs for his prosthetics are about helping him with the insecurity he felt about that loss. she designs hand braces and guards that move right for cyra (who has EDS) that are just as beautiful as jewelry. she helps people feel better about things, instead of just the mechanical pragmatism that people come to expect from her, because she's passionate and empathetic. and eventually, one day, i think she rebuilds her legs like that too.

Numbers 3, 5, and 10 for the OC questions ask meme?
3) Do they have any pet peeves?
5) At what stage of life are they the happiest?
10) What is their favorite memory from their childhood?
Since you didn't specify which, I'll just answer for all of them! Going in the order of age.
Cyra:
3: She's very touchy about etiquette. Do not be rude around Cyra. Do not raise your voice or use brusque language. Do not clink your cups or be anything but perfect at the table. There's, of course, times where she's not uptight as hell. But it is few and far between. Also, she has zero patience for tardiness.
5: After she marries her wife, she retires from politics and military advising and decides to teach-- partially because her health is starting to fail her, but mostly because she wants to spend time with her wife. This is in her forties. She and her wife meet as teenagers. Talk about a long courtship. Anyways-- that period is the best part of her life. She finds it really fulfilling and feels less like she's fighting an uphill battle against bureaucracy and her body, and more like she's genuinely doing well.
10: Her mom's dinner parties were always very special parts of Cyra's life because she loved to play at being grown up. One particular one for one of her father's promotions when she was eight or so had a friend of her father's who would later become her C.O. talking philosophy with her-- and being taken seriously by an adult who didn't condescend to her or pity her the way her parents did was incredibly important to her. She held onto that for a long time.
Atro:
3: Atro has a very personal pet peeve about personal space and being touched, and will push people away. Don't get in a two foot radius of her without asking, she will use force. Additionally, do not move her things. Everything has a place. Her tools all go somewhere even if it doesn't make sense to you. She is simply built diffterent!
5: Atro's life is probably happiest in her mid thirties, when her kids are past the toddler stage and she can start teaching them and work independently again, without the shadow of, y'know, the Empire hanging over everyone anymore and the many, many people who were out to get her around anymore. Sure, she's still got issues, but at heart, Atro is a teacher, and her twins are good learners-- and getting to work on her real passion as a mechanic instead of feeling pressured to be part of the effort to protect the galaxy is a great thing for her. She didn't have to build and fix ships and weapons anymore and got to focus on designing prosthetics and mobility aids. It was a really fulfilling time for her and the first time she ever really felt like she was home since she was very, very little.
10: When she was very little and she lived with her parents on Murninkam, her dad used to walk her to the nearest port, Laaskrik, every few months or so. He always made a point of buying her something special to take back with her. Pretty little beaded bracelets, sometimes toys. She probably didn't realize it at the time but it was often at the cost of any of his own spending money. She doesn't have any of the little treasures left anymore, but she fondly remembers it.
Tyche:
3: Tyche has a serious issue with two things. People who she too easily can get the slip on are an immediate dislike, and god forbid you chew in her vicinity.
5: The happiest part of Tyche's life is by far, the part of her life where she has retired from being an intelligence officer, her kids are adults, and it's just her and her ship and her husband joyriding around the galaxy. She feels like she never got to really see places when she was young because she was so busy being, well, Like That (read: a paid assassin and then intelligence officer for the Rebellion).
10: Her happiest childhood memory is her and her older sister picking berries when they were little, gorging themselves on those stupid sweet things and laying out in the snow watching the ships in the distance pass through the system and hoping that one day they'd be on one of them.
Enlil (he/they):
3: Reckless self endangerment and ignoring your own personal needs is a one way ticket to the time out corner with them. He will sit you down if they must.
5: The happiest part of their life in terms of fulfillment is probably just after the Empire falls (so, like, his early 30s), when he and his wife Tyche spent every moment with rescue operations and relief. They were a huge part of the reform in the New Republic's handling of relief and healthcare reform post-Empire, and genuinely loved the work because everything he does he does for other people.
10: His happiest childhood memory is he, and his mothers (they have lesbian moms) going on their first camping trip as a family. He grew up on Miko, where one of his mothers was relatively high ranked in bureaucracy, and it is a very humid, tropical planet, and sure, it was sticky and sweaty and gross, but have you ever jumped into a creek in the most nasty humid summer ever? That's cemented in their memory as the happiest moment. His mum catching him in her arms, as they jumped off the swing.

im also honest to god still so fucking obsessed with the idea of atro being raised as an extremely powerful force user with practically unlimited potential-- and then choosing to do what she genuinely loves instead of chasing after "destiny" or something, because she has passion and skill at it instead of doing something that actively endangered her and made her suffer because "it's fate". i love that she decided that saying "fuck that" was a good answer to people who look at her ability to use the force and assume she should be something greater than a dirty little wrench-wielding gremlin covered in grease. i love that she actively resists the idea that she should aspire to become a jedi since she dropped being an inquisitor after killing her abuser.
so often, i feel like narratives in fantasy and science fiction are about duty and obligation, and so seldom are they about closure and happiness. atro always deserved the latter and letting her get that hits a very soft spot in my heart
