The New Children's Hospital in Helsinki is struggling to treat pediatric patients within Finland's legally mandated time limits.
Three-year-old Inka has been waiting for heart surgery since she was 18 months old, far longer than the country's six-month "health care guarantee."
Her heart defect means she tires quickly and has less energy to play than her peers. She often needs to be carried back home after a short outing.
"The long wait has been really upsetting, frustrating and frightening," Inka's mother, Pihla, said.
Pediatric heart surgeon Antti Huuskonen said that he shares families' frustrations, but noted that the queue moves forward in order of urgency.
Lack of ICU nurses
An acute nursing shortage—particularly in intensive care—at HUS' New Children's Hospital is the main obstacle to prompt treatment.
Surgeries cannot be carried out without an adequate number of nurses to care for patients post operatively.
In the fall of 2022, the hospital's staff shortage became critical to the point that the Helsinki University Hospital District filed a report over its shortcomings to the regional state administrative authority and Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health.
At the time, in October of last year, 117 pediatric patients were in line for cardiac surgery—more than double the number of patients typically waiting for such an operation.
Jari Petäjä, a pediatric expert at HUS, said that while some improvements have been made since last autumn, around 100 kids are still in line for heart surgery, as the Children's Hospital remains short of 20 ICU nurses.
To improve the situation, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health recently earmarked an additional one million euros to train more intensive care nurses this year and next.
In the meantime, families able to travel can access heart surgery in Copenhagen and Gothenburg, owing to hospital cooperation with HUS.
At the New Children's Hospital, all of Inka's pre-operative procedures are done and she's finally ready to roll into surgery where surgeons will operate on her atrial septal defect.
"This is probably the worst Monday morning of my life," her mother, Pihla, said.

What is the Cost of ASD Closure Surgery in India?
One of the congenital heart abnormalities known as Atrial Septal Defect is caused by a hole in the septum wall that separates the heart's upper chambers, or atria. A physical examination, echocardiography, and ECG or EKG are typically performed to make the diagnosis. Treatment options may include either surgery that closes the defect or medication to control symptoms. To fix the hole in the heart's septum and prevent blood from flowing irregularly between the atria, ASD closure surgery in India is done.
The objective of the treatment is to improve the heart's overall function, minimise symptoms, and avoid concerns. In order to reach the heart, the surgeon creates small incisions in the chest and uses specific instruments. After that, the septum's hole is sealed, allowing the heart's blood flow to return to normal.
Dr. Nadeem Khan, the esteemed owner of Cross Border Care and a leading medical consultant in India, is renowned for his exceptional expertise in eps and rfa cost in India, arrhythmia treatment surgery in India, Best Kidney Transplant Surgery in India, Corneal Transplant Surgery Cost in India, best bone marrow transplant surgery in india and scoliosis treatments. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) or Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is generally termed as hole in the heart, a type of congenital heart defect.
An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) occurs when there is a hole in the walls (septum) between the two upper chambers of the heart.
Small defects in the atrial walls do not cause a problem as such and get closed on their own during infancy or early childhood.
A large hole in the atrial wall on the other hand, may have to be treated surgically because in this case, the hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. Hence, the defect needs to be repaired to prevent further complications.

Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery in Jaipur: Advanced Cardiac Care for a Healthier Life
Heart disease is one of the leading health concerns globally, and timely, effective treatment is crucial to improving both quality and longevity of life. With advancements in medical technology, heart surgery has become more refined and less invasive, leading to quicker recovery times, fewer complications, and less pain for patients. One of these innovations is Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery (MIHS), a cutting-edge procedure available in Jaipur, providing a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional open-heart surgery.
Tumblr media
What is Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery?
Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery is a surgical technique that allows doctors to perform complex heart procedures through small incisions, rather than the large incision used in traditional open-heart surgery. In MIHS, surgeons use specialized tools and cameras to operate on the heart without needing to break the breastbone (sternum). This method significantly reduces trauma to the body and improves post-surgical outcomes.
Common Types of Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery
Several types of heart procedures can be performed using minimally invasive techniques. Some of the common surgeries include:
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): This procedure involves bypassing blocked coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the heart muscle. In a minimally invasive CABG, the surgeon uses small incisions to perform the bypass, avoiding a full sternotomy.
Valve Repair or Replacement: Heart valve surgery is one of the most common procedures performed minimally invasively. Surgeons can repair or replace valves such as the aortic or mitral valve using small incisions and advanced techniques.
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Repair: Minimally invasive techniques can also be used to repair a hole in the heart, known as an atrial septal defect, without the need for open-heart surgery.
Arrhythmia Surgery: Minimally invasive procedures can help correct abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, by using advanced techniques like catheter ablation.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery
There are several advantages to choosing Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery over traditional methods:
Smaller Incisions: With MIHS, surgeons make tiny incisions, which reduce the amount of scarring and damage to the surrounding tissues.
Quicker Recovery: Patients who undergo minimally invasive heart surgery typically experience faster recovery times, allowing them to return to their daily lives sooner. Hospital stays are shorter, and patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks.
Less Pain and Discomfort: Since the breastbone is not cut open, patients experience significantly less pain compared to traditional heart surgery.
Lower Risk of Complications: Minimally invasive techniques are associated with a lower risk of infection, bleeding, and other post-surgical complications, as there is less trauma to the body.
Better Aesthetic Results: Smaller incisions mean less noticeable scarring, which is a concern for many patients. Our services: Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery in Jaipur
Why Choose Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery in Jaipur?
Jaipur has emerged as a hub for advanced medical care, with several hospitals and heart institutes offering Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery. Surgeons in Jaipur are highly trained in the latest cardiac techniques, ensuring that patients receive world-class care without having to travel far from home.
Experienced Surgeons: Jaipur is home to some of the best cardiac surgeons in India who specialize in minimally invasive heart procedures. These surgeons have extensive experience and have undergone advanced training in this field.
Advanced Technology: Leading hospitals in Jaipur are equipped with the latest medical technologies, including high-definition imaging systems and robotic-assisted surgery tools, which allow for precise and efficient procedures.
Affordable Treatment: Jaipur offers advanced medical treatments at a fraction of the cost compared to other metropolitan cities or countries, making it a preferred destination for many patients.
Conclusion
Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery in Jaipur represents the future of cardiac care. With its numerous benefits — smaller incisions, faster recovery, reduced pain, and lower complication rates — MIHS is an excellent option for those requiring heart surgery. If you or a loved one are facing heart surgery, consult with a specialized cardiac surgeon in Jaipur to explore whether minimally invasive heart surgery is the right choice for you.

Congenital Heart Disease Classification: A Comprehensive Guide
Congenital heart disease (CHD) encompasses a range of structural heart anomalies present at birth. Classifying these conditions helps in understanding their nature, guiding treatment, and improving patient outcomes. CHD is generally categorized based on anatomical and physiological characteristics.
One primary classification is by heart structure involvement. This includes defects affecting heart chambers, valves, and major vessels. Examples are atrial septal defects (ASD), ventricular septal defects (VSD), and valve stenosis. Another approach classifies CHD based on hemodynamic impact: cyanotic (right-to-left shunt causing low blood oxygen levels, such as tetralogy of Fallot) and acyanotic (left-to-right shunt causing volume overload, such as ASD and VSD).
Further, CHD can be classified by its complexity. Simple defects might involve a single structural issue, whereas complex CHDs involve multiple abnormalities or combined defects. Another classification considers the presence of associated conditions, such as Down syndrome or other genetic syndromes that may influence the heart defect.
Understanding these classifications aids in precise diagnosis and effective treatment planning, essential for managing congenital heart disease and improving quality of life for affected individuals.

Coronary Artery Disease is the most common type of heart disease. It occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle. Symptoms often include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and fatigue.
Treatment: Dr. Rahul Sharma emphasizes the importance of lifestyle changes, such as adopting a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, and quitting smoking. Medications like statins, beta-blockers, and aspirin may also be prescribed. In severe cases, procedures such as angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are performed at JaipurCardiologist to restore proper blood flow.
Heart Failure
Heart Failure is a condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively, leading to symptoms like swelling in the legs, fatigue, and shortness of breath. This condition can result from various underlying issues, including CAD, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Treatment: Managing heart failure involves a combination of medications, such as ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and beta-blockers, along with lifestyle modifications. Dr. Rahul Sharma at JaipurCardiologist also recommends regular monitoring and follow-up appointments to manage the condition effectively.
Arrhythmias
Arrhythmias are irregular heartbeats that can range from harmless to life-threatening. Common types include atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, and tachycardia. Symptoms may include palpitations, dizziness, and fainting.
Treatment: Depending on the type and severity of the arrhythmia, treatment options vary. Medications to control the heart rate or rhythm, lifestyle changes, and procedures like catheter ablation are common. Dr. Rahul Sharma also highlights the use of pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) for certain types of arrhythmias at JaipurCardiologist.
Valvular Heart Disease
Valvular Heart Disease involves damage or defects in one of the four heart valves, affecting blood flow. Symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, and swollen ankles.
Treatment: Treatment may involve medications to manage symptoms and prevent further complications. In more severe cases, surgical interventions such as valve repair or replacement are necessary. JaipurCardiologist, under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Sharma, utilizes advanced techniques for these procedures, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscle, which can become thickened, enlarged, or rigid. This can lead to heart failure or arrhythmias. Symptoms often include breathlessness, swollen legs, and an irregular heartbeat.
Treatment: Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications. Medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgical options like septal myectomy or heart transplantation are considered. Dr. Rahul Sharma at JaipurCardiologist provides comprehensive care tailored to each patient's needs.
Preventive Measures and Regular Check-Ups
Preventive measures play a crucial role in combating heart diseases. Dr. Rahul Sharma advises regular heart check-ups, especially for those with risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease. Early detection and management can significantly reduce the risk of severe complications.
At JaipurCardiologist, we are committed to providing the highest standard of cardiac care. Our team of experts, led by renowned cardiologist in Jaipur, Dr. Rahul Sharma, employs state-of-the-art technology and personalized treatment plans to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
Tumblr media
In minimally invasive cardiac surgery, surgeons make only a small incision in the chest to access the heart. This approach allows multiple heart treatments without cutting through the breastbone, as in traditional open-heart surgery. The minimally invasive method offers several benefits.
Minimally invasive techniques can manage various cardiac conditions, such as atrial septal defect, atrioventricular septal defect, and mitral regurgitation. In some cases, a surgeon passes a tiny video camera and other instruments through the small incision to seal defects, remove growths, or repair or replace heart valves. The surgeon operates from a console, precisely manipulating the camera and instruments. This technique minimizes blood loss, reduces the risk of infection and scarring, lessens postoperative pain, and accelerates healing time.
After surgery, most patients go to the intensive care unit for overnight monitoring. They may receive fluids, medications, and oxygen. The typical hospital stay is a few days, during which the healthcare team monitors vital signs, administers pain medication, and provides instructions for postoperative care. Upon discharge, patients may need to follow specific measures to promote heart health, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, reducing stress, and quitting smoking.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in Jaipur: A Revolutionary Approach to Heart Health
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) is a groundbreaking technique that offers patients in Jaipur a safer, less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. This modern surgical approach is designed to treat complex heart conditions while minimizing trauma, reducing recovery time, and improving overall outcomes for patients.
Tumblr media
Understanding Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
MICS involves performing heart surgery through small incisions, rather than the large incisions used in conventional open-heart surgery. Surgeons use advanced instruments and specialized techniques to access the heart, allowing them to carry out procedures such as heart valve repair, coronary artery bypass, and congenital heart defect corrections with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
Unlike open-heart surgery, which typically requires a large chest incision and cutting through the breastbone (sternotomy), MICS allows the surgeon to work through smaller incisions, usually between the ribs. This approach significantly reduces the physical toll on the body and leads to faster recovery.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
Faster Recovery: One of the most significant benefits of MICS is the reduced recovery time. Patients can often return to their normal activities within weeks, compared to the months of recovery needed after traditional open-heart surgery.
Less Scarring: The smaller incisions made during MICS result in significantly less scarring. Patients experience less pain and discomfort, with cosmetic benefits of minimal visible scars.
Reduced Risk of Infection: Since the surgery involves smaller incisions, there is a reduced risk of infection and complications post-surgery. Additionally, patients often require less pain medication.
Shorter Hospital Stay: Patients undergoing minimally invasive cardiac surgery typically spend less time in the hospital, often being discharged within a few days, as opposed to the longer stays required after traditional surgery.
Lower Blood Loss: With smaller incisions and less tissue disruption, MICS results in less blood loss, reducing the need for blood transfusions during or after surgery.
Common Procedures Performed with MICS
Heart Valve Repair or Replacement: This includes the repair or replacement of the mitral or aortic valve through minimally invasive techniques.
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): In some cases, bypass surgery can be performed minimally invasively, where a new path is created for blood to flow around a blocked artery.
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Repair: Surgeons can repair a hole in the heart’s septum using MICS, avoiding the need for full chest opening.
Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: Some patients with irregular heart rhythms can benefit from MICS procedures designed to restore normal heart function.
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in Jaipur
Jaipur has emerged as a hub for advanced heart treatments, including minimally invasive cardiac surgery. With expert cardiac surgeons, state-of-the-art facilities, and cutting-edge medical technology, patients in Jaipur can receive world-class heart care without traveling far.
Cardiac surgeons in Jaipur are highly trained in MICS techniques, offering patients individualized treatment plans tailored to their specific heart conditions. Whether it’s valve repair, coronary artery bypass, or another heart procedure, the focus is always on delivering optimal care with the least amount of trauma to the body. Our services: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in Jaipur
Choosing the Right Surgeon
When considering minimally invasive cardiac surgery, choosing the right surgeon is crucial. Patients should look for experienced cardiac specialists with expertise in MICS and a track record of successful outcomes. Consulting with a top cardiac surgeon in Jaipur ensures that the patient receives not only the best possible care but also peace of mind.
Conclusion
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery represents a significant advancement in heart care, offering patients in Jaipur a more comfortable and quicker recovery journey compared to traditional open-heart procedures. By minimizing trauma to the body, reducing recovery time, and enhancing overall surgical outcomes, MICS is revolutionizing heart surgery and helping patients return to their lives with renewed heart health.
