Lookism chapter 514: little rant

This is stupid as fuck at this point, genuinely one of the worst lookism chapters i've read so far.

I've been here since 2020, I've felt a lot of things when reading lookism, excitement, giddiness, sadness, suspense but never have i ever felt actual "what the fuck is going on" rage ever while reading lookism.

Nothing in this whole "hunt for gun" arc makes sense, like literally nothing adds up. first we've got the ENTIRE verse assembling like the avengers to take down gun, like we're talking extras that haven't appeared in years. Then these seemingly amazing strong characters that went through so much character development and training arcs get the floor wiped with them, absolutely erasing all the progress they've made so far and get taken down within literally three panels. Not to mention how they deal fatal blows and this man hits super saiyan poses and gets up like nothing happened? Then he proceeds to randomly and casually plunging off a cliff above the mountain forest and lands on the highway in 0.00001 sec mid fight without taking any fall damage whatsoever and gets right back to swinging.

Anyways fast forward to the ridiculous fight he had with johan, which i find to be absolutely ridiculous johan should have 100% won that and the fight should'nt have been prolonged that much, not only was johan in perfect health and his vision was restored, but gun was also getting more and more "tired" and his state was pitiful. But SOMEHOW he still won that. Okay. Cool.

And now fast forward to today's chapter: gun's DUMBASS turns down goo's offer and now they're fighting. So naturally you'd expect gun to lose because goo is relatively equal (as stated multiple times by the narrative) to gun, and gun is in a pitiful state broken arm basically became a flesh and bones smoothie, not to mention his organs must have turned into slime from the amount of hits he has taken. His left eye is popped and bloodshot, his neck is sliced, he even has CLAW marks down his lower torso and forearm, excessive blood loss and nasty bruising everywhere... so obviously goo who is 100% in good shape and is proven to be a very powerful and impactful character will win right? Haha.

*internally screaming throwing up sobbing rolling on the floor in rage and despair*

HOW THE FUCK DID HE END UP ON THE FLOOR SQUISHED LIKE A BUG WITH A SWORD PIERCING THROUGH HIM???? The whole fight made me ENRAGED, i lost it when he blocked the sword with his mouth AND bit it off like are we sure we're still in a slice of life manhwa and not a horror one? I lost it even more when his mouth that was torn ear to ear because of the sword magically healed in the next panel like nothing happened, like that sword didn't just cut through his flesh. Speaking of swords cutting through flesh, how did goos sword sharp enough to cut through metal and concrete walls get stuck on his ankle? Dies this man have titanium bones or something?? How did the sword get stuck on the FLESH not even the bone itself. And the fact that he just walked it off again like nothing happened.. somehow goo only landed like two clean hits and gun magically dodged all the other ones.

Then PTJ proceeds to pull up the double suicide to end the fight in which BOTH goo and gun were stabbed but goo somehow is the one who ends up being squished on the floor like a bug.

This is unacceptable, idk wth ptj was expecting us to get hype after gun some fucking how is capable of weaseling himself out of every corner he's backed up to this is starting patterns that are very similar to jjk.. which i don't like at all. I'd like to say for the one billionth time again that PTJ writing gets progressively worse from the years, which only consists of stalling and dragging the arcs instead of moving on to other plot points, extreme plot armor, adding in an unbelievable number of minor characters, background characters, and extras just to neglect them after a few chapters. Some characters who supposedly were from the "main cast" were gone for YEARS dude, and the lacking female character writing (some may argue with this because it is true there are female characters that are badass and are really good written, but most are created only for the purpose of helping a certain male character with character development. Which he literally directly says on his author note for viral hit in which he says all the female characters form the main cast even the nurse were created for romantic interest, which is an insane thing to say.)

Anyhow, if you've read this far thank you for coming to my ted talk 😓. I know some things i said might be controversial but i just needed to let out some steam, because this is getting ridiculous. Everyone can see the pattern now like there is no way that he's so overpowered that the entirety of the verse wasn't able to take him down.

I can't even say anything without giggling. i did lose it omg. i need to...idek atp, i can't stop giggling, i miss her bad. i took a screenshot every time she was on screen, and it took me forever bc i pausing and giggling. every line she had i was dying. wdym "no matter where you go or which corner of the cosmos you may be, you will always be able to find a safe haven by my side" like let's all die. I want to be at her side NOW. I also asked her if she abandoned me, "you know I'd never do that" what does she meannn, like that's the first interaction we had w her in the game, her leaving. and she's being so soft :( but her saying all that then dumping us on the space station no problem is so kafka. I hate her so much.

I was so unprepared for this, blade saying don't let kafka down bc she sacrificed so much for us. her smile being "half cold half warm" ik that's right

her saying "i don't want anything to come between us, not even doubt" "as long as you stand with the stellaron hunters, you will never know the pain of betrayal." makes me think about what she said about keeping the right distance to maintain long-lasting relationships.

also what she said right before the fight, "all the bloodshed and cried beyond the screen are merely there to serve as the backdrop for the main characters. Together we will dance against the current, until the universe meets Finality." like that's how she sees the outcomes of the "scripts" maybe? and everything else in order to fight fate is just the backdrop. very delicious.

but they were wrong about her not being good at patience. that's her thing. her problem is that she's too patient. idk what the writers were on, but they're wrong. or maybe she was fucking with us the entire time or it was a fake memory. idk.

ok now let's talk about aglaea. (i stopped right after kafka showed up btw, so uh I haven't seen all of her scenes yet)

I love her. that voice? the accent? I love the "divinity is lonely" trope, but I usually just like lonely characters in general lol. she has all that power but the world is still going to end. she's so distant to bc she has to be disconnected on a certain level to maintain the pretense that everything is ok so the people who look to and rely on her (it's everyone) don't worry? she's protecting the last city that isn't destroyed, she killed a god, but the world is still going to end? her plan too. like "planning" to execute the TB so they'll trust the others more and help save the city because she cannot.

anyway I need cheryl to voice the kafka lines bc I know I'll lose my shit even more. I need a few business days to calm down about her tho.

FUCK. they had her so incredibly soft in this little cameo like i dont know what that was about but i was squealing and cheesing so much my jaw started to hurt. i missed her so bad… i also chose the “did you abandon me” line and screamed into my pillow at her answer like she’s sooo unserious for what she then told the tb during her companion quest 😭 omfg real question, do we think that because kaf knew the tb would lose their memories once the stellaron was implanted, it’s why she was so open before?.. that would be so sick. that “half cold half warm” comment was so real and it translates into everything she does it’s like she cant bring herself to be fully committed to anything that doesnt secure her future. shes so obviously passionate (proven once more with her “we will dance against the current” line) but beyond that i wonder if she has anything she wants and would fight for. i loved that line because it really shows how she thinks, that she doesn’t really feel any remorse or guilt for her actions bc she sees what shes doing as “details”. she’s always focusing on the big picture and it’s just so nice to hear her say it ykwim? because idk if i’d consider kaf ‘morally grey’ so far and this kinda just reaffirmed that belief for me, who thinks like that? 😭 once again her “the end justifies the means” sort of thinking is ehhhhh. in one of my philosophy classes one of the arguments against that kind of utilitarian thinking was that we cant predict what’s going to happen, so committing terrible acts cant be “for the good of humanity” if you dont even know that things will turn out well in the end. but kafka does know. kinda interesting

yes they were wrong about the patience thing idk what happened in that writing room but i should’ve been there… /lh idk if it’s an actual fake memory because mem said the tb’s memories were chaotic but as we all know, “memories do not lie” so… im choosing to believe it was real idc ! kaf was so domestic in this idc like its mine im eating that shit uppp, what do you mean “dinner’s ready” and blade giving her his preferences like he cant cook his own meal im crying theyre my family. kaf saying that travelling with people who dont talk much makes her feel lonely makes me wonder if thats why she “loves chatting with silver wolf”

I LOVE AGLAEA. for the exact reasons you just stated like i think she’s gonna be up there in my top 10 guys… the burden of being the one who has to uphold people’s faith is so delicious. so lonely. shes giving it her all but shes still pessimistic as to amphoreus’ destiny so to her, she’s doing everything just so that her people die in the end, thats insane. and its worse that ppl dont only have faith in their gods, they have faith in her in particular because she’s ascended to divinity in their eyes and whether she likes it or not that always drives a wedge between that person and humanity as a whole. she mentions her humanity “eroding” and sounds wry about it aaaaaa, like something she can’t control or fight against and shes just accepted it. love her. that voice??? need her whispering in my ear. the way she says “very good” oh i got tingles all over my body… how she (more than once) guides us through things really brought forth the puppy top in me i can’t even lie

i think if cheryl had voiced those lines nobody would’ve heard of me for at least 2 days. im still recovering from the lines themselves i cant imagine the softness in her voice as she says them i would’ve ended up comatose

from the very introduction of soek jaebom's character as 'the one who lost all his memories' who seems to be a nice kid friends (?) with literal piece of trash gi osung ive been thinking:

imagine one day waking up with no memories of yourself for a good recent chunk of your life. you dont know your friends, you dont know yourself, what kind of a person are you, what did you use to do, what were your interests... (i imagine its similar to wearing your shoes but they feel just enough Wrong and foreign for you to double check and it turns out the shoes belong to someone else but look identical to ones you own)

anyway

you dont know who you are, but still life gotta life so you move along, and you start living again and you meet new faces that shouldn't be new and you make new friends and you start carving a life out, make a new path.

and then one day all your memories come back

and it turns out that you were a completely different person, with a completely different life, so much so a third person point of you would have trouble believing that both those persons are you .

how do you deal with that? how do you reconcile these two parallel versions of you? how do you begin to fit your pre-memory-loss self into the self you are now? does it make any difference? why? how do you even begin to sort all of this out?

and i think, this is the main reason why this plotline with soek jaebom rubs me the wrong way (aside from all the shitty "representation" of DID and and the general bs of this 'twist'). i think losing one's entire self, then building a new one in this place with barely any clues from what stood prior, to being in a position where both the selves stand side by side - is such a rare, complex, layered and like a hundred other ineffable things which this show in its last few episodes has stripped it off and made a cheap 2 dimensional caricature of. in fact, adding another deeply complex layer of DID should ideally make it even MORE interesting if explored and done right, but of course, its just used as another angle for a bad attempt at "spicing things up" or whatever the fuck the writers were going for idek atp what the fuck the intention was.

this whole plotline was just wholly flat, without any depth or complexity, so much so it sorta takes away from everything that the show had built up to till this point in terms of characters, their relationships and the general trajectory of the show.

Because this is my first life

Okay so this one started pretty well, I liked the premise, it's fake dating, and they're just out there living their lives. They work well together, but I think after enjoying these shows where the main characters are so energised and joyful, having two main characters who are more bland and simplistic in their lifestyle just lost a bit of the magic. I might still come back to it, I haven't deleted it entirely yet, but right now I'm watching other things.

As far as it got with the wedding went pretty well, and it looked like things might be taking a turn for the fun, but then we introduce the overly interested kid, who atp could possibly be a stalker? Which is where I've left it, they're unhappily married, she's feeling rejected by him, idek whats going on in his head, and the kid is kinda creepy and needs to back off.

We'll see if i regain interest later.

Like it feels like a voice that might be given to a relatively lanky, disheveled villain of a show like I’m imagining dry crusty villain here it’s not deep enough and almost has some like high strung texture to it (this was such a bad explanation and I’m also going based off memory so excuse me if I’m remembering wrong as we know remembering is not my strong suit LMAO)

I especially enjoyed the idea of President Barbie being the main character, and focusing on the struggles that Black women and girls go through especially regarding femininity, as well as the intersection between other races of women and other marginalized classes such as queer women, fat women, disabled women, trans women, etc. And also showing Stereotypical Barbie acknowledging her privileges while still not making her evil and showing her solidarity with the other Barbies is also good. Rather than the “white as default” rhetoric the movie had, while also being rife with casually racist jokes(the Jezebel line, the smallpox joke, the “life of blond fragility” lyric in that one unnecessary as shit Ken song). Also showing the deserved critique of Barbie as a brand while still showing that she can be empowering is also a good thing, instead of somehow managing to mock her while also simultaneously portray her critic as a strawman(that “fascist” comment took years off my life span, apparently liking fashion and the color pink makes you a fascist? Idek atp).

I also love the idea of showing the many different struggles that real-world women also face, but still having there be positivity and show them embracing their womanhood/own form of femininity(or lack thereof), and finding empowerment in themselves to fight patriarchal norms and be respected and taken seriously without relying on societal validation, instead of the movie which painted a very binary “Barbie world treats women great, the real world treats women bad” view that portrayed women as totally powerless and not being able to have any happiness and strength, and portrayed women having power as something that could only occur in some absurd fantasy land. Like one of the reasons I hated Gloria’s speech was because I felt like it was painting being a woman as just a bad thing that only has downsides, like it’s all about being treated unfairly and never being good enough, and the movie on a whole did nothing to tackle or show the positive aspects of being a woman despite society’s standards. It felt like saying “in the fake Barbie fantasy world being a woman may seem fun and awesome, but in the real world, being a woman SUCKS! Wake up, Barbie, you need to realize that!” And it’s awful. Especially when they fight against the Ken Patriarchy only by using their womanly wiles, like the only strength or power women have is in their bodies and abilities to sexually entice men. Yikes. It disgusts me.

I also like the use of the Kens as supporting characters who help and assist the Barbies and show ally ship that is so so needed in feminism, WITHOUT taking center stage and making themselves the star of the show or the “real” ones feminism is supposed to care about and benefit. In fact, if the movie did want to focus on men so bad, then I think they could have done the “being a woman sucks in the real world” thing and placed it on the men instead(because why does it always have to fall on the women that our oppression is something inherent to us that we can’t ever escape from? Miss me with that shit). Like they could have done “in the fake Barbie fantasy world, men are great and kind and cool, but in the real world, men SUCK!” Hating men as a social class for how they treat women and not letting them off the hook or giving them the benefit of the doubt but showing that the onus is entirely on THEM to be better, not on women to be nicer to them in the hopes that men don’t unleash violence upon them and apologize to them for being “too feminist” and hurting their feelings? Yes, your honor, I am all HERE for it.

And finally I love how you show Mattel as a brand as evil and the actual villain. It bothers me how they were portrayed as the good guys in the story throughout and “just wanting to make little girls smile” when in reality they are evils and sexist and wanted to put Barbie back in a box. Like the Barbie movie is excellent at giving men the benefit of the doubt and portraying them as well-meaning and harmless to justify their acts of violence and misogyny against women, and it being women’s jobs to calm their rage and cater to their egos if they want to get any rights, and it’s unfair. Especially at the end when they say that humans created patriarchy to cope with how hard life is. Excuse me??? Men oppressing women is okay because they’re suffering from an existential crisis and need women to be their punching bags in order to cope? And also implying that women have an equal hand in creating patriarchy as men? Evil. (And ofc, this is not to say that women can’t also have a hand in perpetuating patriarchy, especially privileged women, for example, white women also owned slaves the same as white men, and were just as brutal and abusive towards them, and cis women such as myself also are just as capable of perpetuating transphobia as cis men, but to say that those women have just as much patriarchal privilege as the men of their social class is a laughably wrong myth. Just like saying that men who are oppressed have it just as bad as women within their oppressed class.)

And on a purely fun level, I would love to see President Barbie’s friendships explored more deeply with the other Barbies, especially the trans Barbie and the fat Barbie. And also weird Barbie! And I think that they should have gotten the big song and dance number, not the Kens, whom the movie came to a screeching halt to make the center of attention halfway through in a way that was cheap and made no sense. And the movie should have ended with the Barbie world and the real world being equally accessible to one another, so that the Barbies can travel to the real world to assist girls in need and the real girls can go to the Barbie world to enjoy life and have fun in a safe whimsical fantasy(but not completely divorced from reality) feminist land without the burden of misogyny, to show that a better world is accessible and possible and not just a naïve Narnia children’s fantasy. They should have melded the two worlds together, while still keeping them separate and distinct, instead of having Stereotypical Barbie leave her matriarchal fantasy for the patriarchal reality(which seems to insinuate not only that women should learn to assimilate into patriarchy and stop trying to advocate for their rights, but also that women need to “wake up” from their fantasy that women can ever have power and need to accept the real world for what it is, a patriarchy, both of these implications are…hmm…shall I say? Not great!). And absolutely none of that gynecologist crap. Ew.

All in all, love this rewrite of the movie! I would happily and eagerly watch it. Keep writing more! 🙌🏿

This is based off the answer @aishabellasbigblogofeverything gave when I sent an ask about it months back, but the more I think about the Barbie Movie, the more I really think it should have been about intersectionality in feminism, rather than do what they did with Ken. It should have focused on how different types of women, such as women of colour (and different types of women of colour), disabled women, women who present more masculinely etc, get treated by society. So, here are some ideas I have for a Barbie movie rewrite!

Have the President Barbie be the main character. I really liked how the President of Barbie Land is a black woman, and though I'm not black myself, I think showing the difference between the power and respect she holds in Barbie Land vs the struggles Real-World Black women go through even when they are in important roles and positions could be interesting. Of course, this would have to be handled by, you know, black female writers.

Have the inciting incident be reports of multiple Barbies feeling concerned and frustrated about the 'type' of Barbie they are, that they don't fit the 'image' of what 'Barbie' is supposed to be, reflecting how women who don't fit the idea of a white, 'conventially attractive' skinny cishet woman are often made to feel inadequate because of how they're treated by society

Then, have the President go to 'Weird Barbie' for advice on what to do and how to fix the problem. Weird Barbie tells her to go to the real world and find the girls who played with the Barbie's who are struggling (like she does with Stereotypical Barbie in the movie)

Instead of Ken, have multiple other Barbies go with President Barbie to the real world. Have them see that while they can have equality in Barbie Land, it's not quite the case in the real world. Show them as shocked and enraged that this is how real world women and girls still get treated.

You can still have Sasha and Gloria, and have Sasha do her monologue about the problems with Barbie, but have the Barbie's actually take it into account and slowly realise Sasha is kind of right, that Barbie DOES cause unrealistic beauty standards for women, that the brand is so, so based around consumerism and capitalism.

Also, have the Barbie's meet and talk to Sasha's friends and/or other women and girls. Have it revealed that the Barbie's have been feeling insecure and frustrated is because these women and girls have been made to feel insecure for not conforming/not meeting beauty standards and/or frustrated towards the society that makes women feel that way.

Mattel as the villain! Have them want to put all the Barbie's back in their boxes, the Barbie's refusing after listening to the real-world girls, and a Mattel Barbie chase scene/fight scene ensues

Once they've escaped sort-of, have the Barbies take the real world girls to Barbie Land, where the real-world girls are suprised to see how great women have it there

Have the President Barbie realise that even though Barbie Land is a lot better than the real world, it's still not as 'perfect' in terms of how different women get treated, like how Barbies like Weird Barbie got orchestrated and if they're not careful they could fall into the same traps people in the real world do in how women get treated

If you really, really want to do something with the Kens, then have a minor sub plot where they hear how men in the real world treat women and girls, have them be horrifed, and aim to do better in how they interact with and treat the Barbies

Also - have Stereotypical Barbie be some what of a foil to President Barbie, since Stereotypical Barbie is, well, the Stereotype of what Barbie should be. Maybe have a conflict where SB tries to argue against Sasha's criticms of Barbie, which makes Sasha AND President Barbie get frustrated with SB.

This can result in President Barbie going to Weird Barbie and the other Misfits again for advice. Maybe Gloria even follows her and gives her 'being a women is hard' speech, albiet maybe a bit different here because of the different complex

Meanwhile, Stereotypical Barbie talks to the Barbies that went to the Real World, they call her out on her not wanting to aknowledge the flaws and problems with the Barbie brand

Have the Climax be Mattel coming in to try and get the Barbie's to go 'Back in their boxes,' but both the Barbie's and the Real World girls fight against them and win!

The ending would be the President working to make Barbie Land a better place, the Real Worlds going back and learning to both love themselves and not let society get away with them and other women and girls for not meeting hegemonic beauty standards or not conforming to hegemonic feminity, standing up and standing by each other and not tolerating men who treat them poorly.
