Navy's Project 17A frigate 'Vindhyagiri'

The Navy's Project 17A frigate 'Vindhyogiri' will be launched on August 17 at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata.Vindhyagiri, named after a mountain range in Karnataka, is the sixth ship in the Project 17A frigates. These warships are Project 17 class frigates.  which have better stealth features advanced weapon sensors and platform management systems.The first five ships of the project were launched between 2019-2022 by M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers.Vindhyagiri The technologically advanced frigate pays homage to its predecessor INS Vindhyagiri. INS Vindhyagiri - During its nearly 31 years of service from 08 Jul 1981 to 11 Jun 2012, participated in many challenging operations and multinational exercises. - Through which maritime surveillance, coastal patrolling and anti-piracy operations were carried out. - It was decommissioned in 2011 after being damaged in an accident with a merchant vessel. What is project 17a - Project 17A was launched by the Indian Navy in 2019 to build a series of stealth guided-missile frigates. - A total of four vessels are under construction by MDL and three by GRSE under the Project 17A programme. - The Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau. - In line with the country's firm commitment to 'Atmanirbharta', 75% of orders for equipment and systems for Project 17A ships are from indigenous firms. - The first stealth ship launched under this project in 2019 was Nilgiri. Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff #CNS reviewed the preparations for the President’s Fleet Review #PFR on 20 February 2022. The 12th edition of the PFR is being conducted at Visakhapatnam on 21 February 2022 as part of the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, being celebrated as #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Hon’ble President of India, who is also the Supreme Commander of the #ArmedForces, embarked on the Presidential Yacht INS Sumitra, will review the Indian Naval Fleet comprising over 60 ships and submarines, and 55 aircraft. Ships from all Naval Commands and Andaman and Nicobar Command are anchored in four columns. The Presidential yacht will sail past 44 ships anchored in four lanes and will be accorded ceremonial salute one by one. The participating platforms in the review include newly inducted combat platforms, the latest stealth destroyer INS Visakhapatnam and INS Vela. IN Ships Chennai, Delhi, Teg, three Shivalik class frigates and three Kamorta class ASW Corvettes will also form part of the review. Ships from the Coast Guard, Shipping Corporation of India and Ministry of Earth Sciences are also participating in the review. The armed forces must work together towards combined plans: Rajnath Singh

On Thursday, the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh conveyed a strict message to the top IAF commanders and asked them to make long term plans and strategies to boost their capabilities to fight the future threats.

Rajnath Singh was attending the IAF commanders’ conference, amidst the crucial conditions with China where the country keeps on confronting the Indian armies in the eastern Ladakh region. Singh said, “Changing dimensions of warfare now include advanced technologies, asymmetric capabilities and info dominance. It is very important the IAF’s preparations for the future must include these aspects.”

In the past, the IAF have proved its capabilities by ensuring “a timely and befitting response to the sudden developments” in the eastern Ladakh region during the last year. The Chinese troop had a forward deployment of fighters, helicopters and surface-to-air missile batteries, said Rajnath Singh.

Sigh also talked about enhancing the synergy between the three armies- army, navy and air force in terms of planning joint operations and their execution. Singh also said that the armed forces must be focused on working on joint plans and also building logistics plans together and implementing them effectively.

In line with the PM Modi’s self-reliance motto, Rajnath Singh aid that the Indian armies too shall try to make boost “Atmanirbharta” in the defense sector. He further said that “in a substantial boost to domestic defense industry and be a game changer from the indigenization perspective”, he said concluding that the recent Rs 46,898 crore order for 83 new indigenous Tejas fighters for the IAF would be great help.
