A letter from Warden Alistair about the state of the Grey Wardens

Athell, 

There is something happening to the Grey Wardens in Orlais, but don’t worry! The Inquisition has been more than helpful in attempting to figure it out. They think that this darkspawn Magister is controlling the Wardens through a false Calling. 

Which, I have to admit that I’ve been hearing in the background on occasion. Don’t worry, Morrigan and Leliana are with the Inquisition as well. I know they would be the first to act if this magister managed to get a hold on me.

Did I ever tell you about Blackwall? Duncan mentioned him a few times. I thought he would have been taller. He doesn’t strike me as a man bearing the Silverite Wings of Valor, but I think you would have liked him. He’s got a nice laugh.

I hope that your travels have fared better than mine. One day, our paths will cross again and we’d be fighting darkspawn and traveling all over Thedas just as the old days. If Zevran and Lonan are still with you, tell them hello for me! 

Or not. I don’t know what Lonan thinks of me these days. He’s still scary after all this time, right? Think Morrigan’s gone and made that worse, she also is still the same. And Leliana. The amount of Orlesian styled shoes I’ve been shown since arriving would astound you.

When I first played Inquisition (Xbox), I chose the templar route without any prior knowledge of the fact that these two choices would ultimately decide the rest of the game. I never finished that save (the attempt was 2022), and didn't try playing Dragon Age until 2024 when I saw that Veilguard was announced.

Which lead to me playing the series from the beginning for the first time. I still haven't picked up the books or other external media other than the games, and I do plan to change that eventually (currently spending time with family for my birthday).

This became a very near and dear to my heart kind of game series. I've not played RPGs before, only BG3 which I sunk 400 hours into before patch seven broke all of my act 3 saves.

I've been getting back into fanfiction because of it, something I haven't touched since I was super into Marvel movies and writing little stories with friends. It feels nice to be doing something that's nothing super serious and being a fandom lurker. I've never done this type of thing before and I'm very pleased to be here.

Never, ever steal another creators personal work. If your inspired by it, you have to tag them.

The first rule can change on one condition- if it’s a trend- then you don’t have to. If someone suggested it to you though, you should still tag them.

This is a tough one.

Usually, I would run with whatever the games have dictated for what is established as 'canon', but considering my own ideas for my worldstate, I've been rotating an idea in my head.

You know how Flemeth and Morrigan have both carried Mythal? And it is said in a party banter with Emmrich and Taash that Morrigan can turn into a dragon (which she gets for drinking from the well)? I was thinking that perhaps in my worldstate, Eirlin is an aspect of Mythal.

Nothing crazy like shapeshifting into a dragon or anything. Just, a fragment of what was left at the Well, and that's how she becomes fluent in ancient elvhen tongue (if going for a romanced!Solas)

It's a really, really small idea at the moment, but it does speak to me.

Hi, thanks for the ask!!

Backstory: She would go into a Circle Mage background, because she is a mage herself. If there was ever someone should would have brought with her when getting out of the Circle, it would have been Jowan, even after learning he was a blood mage.

5. Choice: This one is tough. The choice that would impact Ethiriel the most would be the choice of siding with Branka or Cairidin. Because of Branka's ambitions and Cairdin's wishes of the Anvil, Ethiriel would side with Cairdin just for the sake of letting the man rest. I think the biggest change to the worldstate if Ethiriel had be the Warden would probably how she would approach Morrigan's ritual. She would refuse to ask anyone to take part in it, would leave Alistair at the gate, and kill the Archdemon herself.

It's super rough but I did make the attempt. (Under the cut.)

Devara was no stranger to the Blight. 

But that didn’t make her job easier by any means. A small village in South Thedas had been overran by darkspawn, leaving several sick and wounded behind. 

Her small company of Wardens were herself, a dwarf named Hamish, and a human who went by Dirk. 

“Aye, we don’t need the likes of you Wardens around these parts.” A man had stopped them from getting any closer to see the extent of the damage done. 

“And if your sick end up dying?” Dirk attempted to reason with the man. 

“Then they die.” The stranger had shook his head, gesturing around them. “It’s better than whatever you’ve got to give.”

“You have a low opinion of Grey Wardens.”

“And what of it? You lot are nothing more than a bunch of thieves and murderers.”

“Tawny!” Another shouted, waving at the old man. “Come off it, you old geezer. Let the Wardens do their job.” 

Tawny had moved out of the way, letting Devara and her accompanying Wardens through. Not that it brought him any joy it seemed. Devara kept an eye on him, as he kept an eye on them. Three Grey Wardens in a village with high tensions would cause trouble, but it seemed as Hamish began to tell stories to the children, Tawny eased his lurking. 

“You know, the Grey Wardens aren’t all that bad.” She strode up to his side, leaning against the smithy as Dirk and Hamish tended to those who needed it. “Murderers and thieves are able to turn their lives around.”

“What are you on about?”

“You’re protective of the people here.” Devara waved her hand, gesturing towards the littered tents and cots, the healers that walked from person to person. “And an attack like this would make anyone nervous.”

“I’m not nervous.”

“But you’re lurking, ready for a fight you might not get. You would make a great warrior if you ever picked up a sword.”

Tawny scoffed, waving her off. “Get to your point.”

“Point is, if you’re willing to brawl with a dwarf with a hammer like Hamish, you’d make a good Grey Warden.” 

Devara rejoined Hamish and Dirk, helping where she could. She wasn’t as skilled as they had been, helping with the bandages and salves when she could. No one had been infected, which was lucky for the village.

When it was time to move on, Tawny had come to see them out. 

“I’ve been thinking.”

“That’s dangerous.”

“I am going to pretend I didn’t hear that from you.” Tawny shook his head. “Look, I’m saying maybe the Wardens aren’t that bad. Would you consider taking in a fool?”

“Dirk is fool enough for everyone.” Hamish elbowed their companion with a thundering laugh. “What’s your name, son?”

“Tawny Thorne.”

“Well, Tawny Thorne. You’re welcomed to join us on our trip back to base if you’re serious about being a Grey Warden.” Dirk shouldered his bag before waving him along. “I promise Devara won’t bite.”

“I might.” She shrugged, putting her shield on her back. “If you give me a reason to.”

To Nug or Not to Nug

Why must they have such creepy feet? Had I known, perhaps I wouldn't have lost that bet to Varric.

I have no clue how Sister Nightingale deals with them, let alone keeps one as a pet.

Little fat, pink rodents with not a thought between the eyes, and topped off with creepy feet that would be described as nightmares. What was the Maker thinking, making that?
