Cary Ch F: Roman Safiullin [1] def. Mattia Bellucci [Q] 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 Match Stats
📸 TC Int'l
M. Bellucci dominated the match for a set and a half before Roman started to strike back. The former might have played lights out until the latter injected some more pace, going more aggressively to the former's shots, but once the first seed settled down from his forehand side, he successfully nailed the rest of the flow, which differentiated both players until the end of the match despite the Italian qualifier's best efforts to stay in the match. Interestingly, even though both players had 12 break points, Roman only converted 33% of them, while Mattia comverted 5 of them thanks to his dominant first set showing.
Apparently, there was a tiny difference between both players' service games throughout the match. M. Bellucci scored 7 aces than Roman's 5, he had the slight edge from his first serves by 7% with a 69% winning percentage, which got him out of trouble several times. However, his 5 double faults faded his second serve winning percentage 3% below Roman, who double-faulted 4 times throughout the match.
This marked Roman's first title of the year, rising back to the Top 60 as he tried to pick up his form after a stellar second semester of 2023. His next tournament will be Winston-Salem (250), where he will receive a bye as the 17th seed upon second seed Jack Draper's withdrawal after his stellar Cincinnati (M1000) run. For M. Bellucci, his US Open qualification rounds campaign will commence against wild card Aidan Mayo as the 12th seed despite his Top 100 debut pending as a result of becoming the runner-up. What a run for both players.

Using my tennis knowledge to let you know something funny about Phil's Tire Town Challenger
So, as you may or may not know, this is the competition Art loses against Du marier. The Atlanta Open (ironically the same open where a few years earlier Tashi and Patrick slept together. It's a 250, so it makes sense that Patrick would be able to qualify for them).
Although, the Du marier game could also be in this one, which is just a week or so after and is slightly harder to get in, since it's 500 (keep in mind the dates here are for the 2024 season and not the 2019 season)
Either way! This is the Cincinnati open that Tashi pulls Art out of. It's a masters which is the hardest one right before the grandslams. (the numbers are pretty self explanitory I feel). If you notice, there's a 250 right around the same time, which Tashi could have sign him up for (a much better and more sensible career move than a fucking challenger!!!)
But you're probably wondering, what does this have to do with Phil's Tire Town challenger?? As I am sure you guessed, no such Challenger exists. But do you know what challenger does exist?? And that happens around the same time as the movie?? This one!
The Atlantic Tire Championships!! Which may or may not be the inspo behind Phil's Tire Town Challenger.

Time for a history lesson, folks.
Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly's lives have been intertwined since they were barely teenagers. The first met at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana, racing go-karts.
2005 Mooresville, Indiana Grand Prix ( r to l ) Art Raney, Elliott Bachelart, Conor Daly, Josef Newgarden
Newgarden drove his first kart at the age of 13, and was a regular at the Kart Racers of America (KRA) series at the New Castle Motorsports Park. It was in 2006 that Josef claimed his first titles, winning two Yamaha Junior championships that season. From there, he jumped back and forth between karting and Skip Barber, where he excelled quickly and won a number of races. Daly began karting earlier, hitting the track at the age of 10. In 2005, Daly won the two Yamaha Junior championships and moved on to racing nationally in the sport of karting. Daly scored three WKA Manufacturers Cup Series victories, including a Grand National event. The following year, he moved up to the Senior level, where he earned the Stars of Karting Eastern championship in TaG driving for Top Kart USA.
2008 would be a year to remember for both as they competed in the Skip Barber National Championship. The two swapped victories with Daly earning five – along with the championship – while Newgarden took home three wins and finished runner-up in the standings. That September, the duo was named to the Team USA Scholarship program to compete at the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy Formula Ford event in England. Newgarden became the first American to win theFormula Ford Festival, while Daly took the honor as the first North American to claim victory at the Walter Hayes event.

Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden, currently first and second, respectively, in the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda, were awarded the prestigious Team USA Scholarships for the 2008 season.
Daly, 16, from Noblesville, Ind., and Newgarden, 17, from Hendersonville, Tenn., will fly the Scholarship’s patriotic red, white and blue colors in the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, England, on the weekend of October 18-19, and the Walter Hayes Trophy Formula Ford event at Silverstone, England, two weeks later (November 1-2).
Prior to Daly and Newgarden racing against each other this year in the Skip Barber National – Daly has four wins and two poles, “Newgy” two wins and a series-leading six poles – the two were competitors in the Stars of Karting ranks. The pair are separated by just five points at the head of the SBN championship standings with just two races remaining at Virginia International Raceway next month.
The pair will drive identical Ray chassis prepared by renowned Cliff Dempsey Racing, a multiple championship-winning team based in Ashbourne, County Meath, Ireland.

Newgarden and Daly were selected to race as part of the 2008 Team USA Scholarship program
The latest in a long line of Team USA Scholarship winners, Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden, dominated proceedings this past weekend in the final two rounds of the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda at Virginia International Raceway.
Daly, 16, from Noblesville, Ind., won from the pole on Saturday at VIR and added a second-place finish Sunday to clinch the championship and a $350,000 bonus that will enable him to progress along the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development ladder system and compete in next year’s Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear. Daly hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow Team USA Scholarship winners Dane Cameron (2006), who went on to win the Star Mazda title in 2007 before graduating into the Cooper Tires Presents the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, and Joel Miller (2007), who leads the 2008 Star Mazda points table prior to the final round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Newgarden, 17, from Hendersonville, Tenn., won Sunday’s race to secure second in the championship standings. Newgarden also claimed two other race wins and a series-high six poles during the 14-race season.

Friday, October 17, 2008 BRANDS HATCH, England – Expectations were high for Team USA Scholarship drivers Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden as they went into today’s official qualifying sessions for the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. Each was in a different group and when their 15-minute sessions were checkered, ”Newgy” was on pole for Heat One while Daly just missed (by .07) pole for Heat Two.

Daly and Newgarden each scored victory in Formula Ford action in Europe
BRANDS HATCH, England – Josef Newgarden made history by winning the famed Formula Ford Festival (1600 Kent class) at Brands Hatch – the first American to ever do so. Past winners of the event, which dates back to 1972, include current Formula 1 stars Mark Webber and Jenson Button.
His Team USA Scholarship teammate Conor Daly also played a starring role, rising from the back of the grid in his heat race to finish a sterling sixth in the 25-lap Final.

Josef Newgarden Wins For Team USA
SILVERSTONE, England – Conor Daly capped an extraordinarily successful Team USA Scholarship foray to England by winning the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone on Sunday, November 2. The victory came just two weeks after teammate Josef Newgarden won the Formula Ford Festival Kent Class at Brands Hatch.
Never in the history of Formula Ford, long considered the seed bed of future F1 drivers, has an American — let alone two — made such an impression in Europe. That Daly and Newgarden found this success as an outgrowth of their Skip Barber experience speaks for itself.
Daly, who started fourth on the 36-car grid for the 15-lap Walter Hayes Grand Final, held in cold, wet and extremely treacherous conditions, took the lead at half distance when Scottish Formula Ford Champion Graham Carroll slid off the road at Luffield corner.
Daly, 16, from Noblesville, Indiana, controlled the remainder of the race and set the fastest lap for good measure. He became the youngest driver ever to scoop the Walter Hayes Trophy, which is named after one of the originators of Formula Ford. The presentation was made by Walter Hayes’ widow, Elizabeth, in the Clubhouse of the famed British Racing Drivers Club.

eKartingNews: Josef, what do you remember about the first time you met Conor?
Josef Newgarden: I think I met Conor the second or third time at New Castle. He was racing Junior Can, and one of the bad ass drivers, along with Eric Morrow and a few others. I was just getting into the sport, practicing and understanding more about the sport. New Castle was the first and closest place to our home. It’s one of the best facilities in the sport and the KRA series they run was pretty packed when we raced there. It provided a great opportunity to race without having to travel to other programs like WKA or Stars of Karting.
EKN: Conor, what do you remember about the first time you met Josef?
Conor Daly: I don’t even know if I remember the first time I met Josef. I think it was at New Castle, racing against each other in Yamaha Junior Can. He was one of my main competitors, so we got to know one another and now have raced against each other for so many years. I won the championships one year, and then he took them both the following year, then we moved up together, and in Skip Barber and Team USA Scholarship together. After time apart, we found ourselves racing against each other in Indy Lights, and now at the Indy 500. It’s been a long road.

Michael Jordan screws Riley gambling killed father My favorite and best player ever and forever.Yes he made most of his money the hard way. He earned it. Basketball, sponsorship, smart business moves etc. Gambling was the ONLY real negative thing in his career, in my opinion which to me was his way of venting and something he enjoyed, so F the haters. But some suspect his gambling during the Nicks series may have either had something to do with his fathers death OR was to confuse Pat Riley OR both.Remember Pat Riley tried everything to get his players to beat Jordan. And was very vocal on not messing with Jordan to motivate him after he did it and lost. And Jordan knew this. I feel MJ is as smart as he is, so the media was well aware of his famous night of gambling in the playoffs. Thinking Riley would tell his troops MJ will be tired, embarrassed maybe and lost a ton of money. Michael Jordan never hid the fact that gambling was a huge part of his life that he was unable to rise against for years. His gambling habit left him in so much debt at some point when he was in the NBA and it reportedly led to his father’s murder, James R. Jordan in July 1993. It was the same year that the Chicago Bulls legend took a two-year retirement from the NBA but not many people knew what was happening. Well, Michael Franzese, a reformed American gangster said that this rumour of Jordan’s debts leading to his father’s death has considerable merit and credibility. Franzese, while speaking during an interview with VladTV in 2019 opened up on his time working with the NBA to educate players about the risks of gambling. He then recalled hearing from a credible source that Jordan’s gambling addiction was to blame for his father’s death in 1993. He added that the NBA, which was commissioned at the time by David Stern, did not want to deal with the unwanted press that the rumour generated. Thus, the league asked Jordan to take a leave until the heat cooled down which is when he retired in 1993. “He’s a big gambler. Michael gambles on everything. I don’t have first-hand knowledge of this, but being that I was working with the NBA at that time, I was told two things,” Franzese recalled. He continued: “One that he was told to leave the NBA around the time that his father got murdered because stories were about to come out and there was a lot of heat on the fact that because of Michael’s gambling habit, his father paid the price. And the NBA didn’t want the press, so they asked him to leave for a while, and that’s when he went to play baseball.” In a statement on his retirement in October 1993, Jordan revealed that he was opting out due to a lack of motivation. He said there was nothing left for him to fight for after leading the Chicago Bulls to three consecutive NBA championships from 1991 to 1993. Jordan’s subsequent return to the NBA in 1996 was according to plan. The rumour on the cause of his father’s death had faded away and there was no more negative press about him. The All-time NBA legend was first seen gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1993. It was just before the Chicago Bulls’ game versus the New York Knicks. He previously acknowledged losing $57,000 while gaming but never talked of the huge debts he incurred due to his addiction. Jordan admitted to being a gambler twelve years later, after announcing his retirement. He also said that his gambling behaviour put his family in jeopardy which Franzese says means more to those with inner knowledge of what happened in 1993. Over the years though, he turned his fortunes around to become the wealthiest NBA player in history with a net worth of $2.2 billion by 2021.

This match turned out to be a complete turnaround by the time the third set was set up. Capitalizing on M. Bellucci's frequent errors, Roman fired a timely forehand winner to create his break point before breaking early to 1-0, followed by swiftly consolidating right after. The former might have had a slight chance when the latter double-faulted in the seventh game somewhere, but Roman still held firm until he earned the chance to serve for the match in the tenth game after the first seed took a medical timeout for his presumably left thigh.
However, after initially having a match point when the first seed should have served for the match, M. Bellucci saved 2 match point through his deep returns, going after Roman's backhand (and forehand, this one with a longer rally). Ultimately, the Italian qualifier broke back to 5-5, and another forehand winner from the first seed secured his break point before its eventual conversion to 6-5. As a result, Roman earned another chance to serve for the match, where he randomly fired an underarm serve to M. Bellucci's forehand return ace to *6-5 30-15.
In the same twelfth game of the third set, the drama intensified as M. Bellucci saved another 2 match points due to Roman's serve+1 error (backhand side) and another forehand one to force the deuce. Painting the lines to create another match point, M. Bellucci saved 2 of Roman's match points through his forehand winners, while the first seed double-faulted somewhere that negated the said match point. At the end, Roman's forehand winner on his eighth match point converted it, taking the third set 7-5 to finally win his first title of the year.

Ok so I’m seeing people saying Jericho and Eddie need to have one more match so Eddie can beat him and make him tap but like… THATS HOW THIS WHOLE SHIT STARTED!!! Eddie knows he’s better than Jericho Jericho knows Eddie is better than him he had to come up with a whole new group to throw at Eddie to keep him safe and even Sammy came back into the fold. Like I would like to move on honestly if they have another match I want it to be Ortiz cutting his hair off tbh. I’m sure the feud ain’t done since this group seems to exist solely to fight Eddie.
It probably won’t end until Garcia finally turns on the JAS but I am legit tired of Jericho. On commentary and in the ring. I’m more interested in P&P going for the tag titles, Yuta and possibly Daniel fighting at the ROH PPV for the Pure Championship, and Eddie going for either all Atlantic or the tbs title and proving himself as a champion

NJPW Strong Episode 60 - 10/9/2021; Suzuki Victorious in GCW, West Coast Pro; Tomohiro Ishii v. Vinnie Massaro in West Coast Pro 11/12/2021
This past Saturday was an extra-length episode of NJPW Strong, with matches from Autumn Attack a few weeks ago. This one kinda deserved it, with a title match, a champion v. champion battle and Minoru Suzuki.
Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] d. Fred Rosser (Gotch Style Piledriver, 11:34)
NJPW Strong Openweight Championship: “Filthy” Tom Lawlor [Team Filthy] (c) d. Ren Narita (St. Andrew’s Cross, 20:14) - Lawlor succeeds his 5th defense
Jay White [Bullet Club] d. Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] (Blade Runner, 18:07)
The NEVER Openweight Champion defeats the IWGP Juniorheavyweight Champion, also his former stablemate. Following the match, Jay fired some shots at EVIL, reminding everyone who’s in charge of this New Era. Narita failed in beating “The Strongest For The Longest,” “Filthy” Tom Lawlor, but seems to be adopting a much more Shibata-like demeanor now. Fred Rosser tried to tell Suzuki that he was in Rosser’s house, which did not end well for him. This was not the only time this happened over the weekend. More on that below.
Next Saturday’s episode continues the Autumn Attack cycle of episodes; the next two episodes also run against special Saturday editions of AEW Dynamite.
It was another weekend of Minoru Suzuki doing Minoru Suzuki things on the US indies.
On Friday, Suzuki defeated the current indie flavor Daniel Garcia (at the same time a pre-taped match between Garcia v. CM Punk was shown on AEW Rampage. Funny how this keeps happening with Garcia), at West Coast Pro’s 3rd anniversary show, No Leaf Clover. It was a very shoot and strike heavy match that included several refrains of “FUCK YOU YOUNG BOY!” from Suzuki. OH MY. Also on that show, Yuya Uemura & Karl Fredericks teamed with Juicy Finau to defeat D-Rogue, Kevin Blackwood & Vinnie Massaro in the show opener, whilst Clark Connors & Kevin Knight of the LA Dojo fell to the West Coast Wrecking Crew of Royce Isaacs & Jorel Nelson. Slight followup item to all this below. You can see this on-demand on IWTV.
Suzuki took Saturday off, but then returned to Game Changer Wrestling on Sunday to face Joey Janela, he of the Spring Breaks, in the semi-main of The Aftermath. (The Aftermath of what, you ask? Jon Moxley v. Nick Gage for the GCW World title on Saturday’s show, which was a gnarly deathmatch that saw Mox retain.) This was a fun outing, with Suzuki not really taking Janela very seriously throughout the match as they brawled all over the Showboat in Atlantic City, NJ. Post-match, Chris Dickinson said that Suzuki was in “his house” (there’s that phrase again), and said even tho they have a match next weekend in Philadelphia at the NJPW Strong tapings (that’s on Saturday 10/16/2021 at the 2300 Arena), they have “unfinished business” in GCW too, meaning, their Bloodsport match that never happened due to the pandemic. AFAIK Suzuki’s match at Bloodsport 7 has yet to be announced, so this could be that. But also, we never got Suzuki v. Orange Cassidy either, from the postponed Spring Break from that year, and that has yet to be rescheduled too. Suzuki laughed off the “His House” comment too. Honestly, the Saturday card was more engaging than the Sunday one overall, but both are worth watching, which you can on FITE TV.
This coming weekend, Suzuki is at the aforementioned NJPW Strong tapings, which will also have he and Lance Archer in a Philadelphia Street Fight against Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston, the latter making his NJPW (NJoA, really) debut.
Back to Friday at West Coast Pro for a moment, after the opener, Vinnie Massaro cut a promo where he challenged “The Best” from NJPW, saying he was tired of rookies and Young Lions. Well, he’s got it now, as Tomohiro Ishii will face Massaro at West Coast v. The World, on 11/12/2021 at the State Room in SF, CA. The next night, of course, is Battle In The Valley in San Jose (which will also be up against AEW’s Full Gear PPV). Tickets for this are on sale, and this will likely also be on IWTV as well.

“Skeppy tortures Bad because he just needs someone to torture and I can't find the word for that
Anyways it'll be a longer oneshot so I hope someone does it”
written
Dolphin King (Karlnap) Karl needs a dolphin to quickly make it through the ocean. But first, he needs to ask the Dolphin King to borrow one.
written
Drunken Pranks
Sapnap, ever the insane idiot, decided it’d be a good idea to prank Dream. George, also an idiot, decided it’d be good to join him. Thus starting a prank war between all of them. (make them get drunk)
Nobody hurts Gogy (GeorgeNap | platonic or romantic)
somebody hurts gogy. sapnap gets very protective Fluff ;D [based off when sapnap said ‘nobody hurts gogy’ hahahahahahaha]
Don’t Mess W Niki
basically bamf niki these are the notes i wrote frick im supposed to sleep but was suddenly struck w this idea from animatic aka where wilbur n tommys citizenship is yeeted?? and its all angst and i love it butimagine that but while they're gone niki just gets so mad at schlatt and just like goes full on badass mode gets full netherite armor and stuff for like tommy n wilbur spends hours getting materials for themand when they come back she's handing them tools and weapons and she's got techno on her side and she's just ready to throw hands with schlatt, has tnt prepared, etc, shes just super prepared to murder schlatt and we get to see her sniping people with a bow
written
Atlantic Empire
techno is king of a weird kingdom. He’s known as the blood god, so good at pvp even the Dream SMP kingdom can’t touch him.
His kingdom is just so weird though.
He’s had at least three wars that had no violence at all- literally just about which kingdom could get more potatoes farmed
His subjects all bully him, hes fine with it, and they’re actually all adore him anyways.
All of his citizens are strangely sarcastic (him even more so)
He’s allies with pogtopia, hates manburg
Neutral with the dream smp
“blood for the blood god”
“Subscribe to technoblade”
“Technoblade never dies”
Its a small kingdom but most of the residents are so good at pvp or speed building or even bedwars/skywars in general that they’re all really powerful
His kingdom is normally p quiet actually
When it snows, it snows
Also ngl, all of their kingdom are BULLIES
Also they’re super competitive but have no hard feelings
Much anxiety (a lot of them chill in their homes or w one friend group but they all know each other)
Winner of antarctic empire bedwars championship go against technoblade and theyre just like “wow i win and all i have to do is speedbridge faster than a pig easy win, i’ll be the new ruler”
Its actually a really good match and in the end the winner gets to be Head Knight or sum, techno wins tho
written
Scars (any ship, platonic/romantic)
“what? Shocked by my scars?”
“Kinda.”
“What are you gonna say? They’re a sign of how I survived? Because I know that, I wish I never did-“
“I haven’t even said anything, and you’re already making assumptions.”
“What?”
“I think they make you look imperfect. They make you look like you actually faced hardships. Like your life wasn’t perfect. It’s comforting, in a way.”
“..oh.”
Don’t Hurt The Children [Gods AU]
Don’t Hurt The Children
Prompt: essentially, there are gods on the smp.
Dream - demigod (of war)
George - mortal
Sapnap - demigod (of fire)
Niki - goddess (of friendship and revenge)
Eret - god (of betrayal and loyalty, because they lie hand in hand)
Techno - demigod (of victory & blood - his godly mother is actually p calm n knows when to use these so)
Phil - god (of family and wisdom)
Wilbur - demigod (of violence)
Tommy - demigod /doesnt know it/ (of music, camaraderie - music discs lol -)
Tubbo - demigod (of nature)
Fundy- hybrid fox
eret is a God who lives in the Dream SMP, dream is a demigod of course, Techno also demigod, Phil + Niki other gods
wilbur goes Insane, hurts tommy - and eret, phil, and niki all decide hes d e a d
Respawn AU
respawn au but ppl get to choose when to perma-die or if they want to leave the server, they get as much time to choose as wanted
Wilbur traps tommy ? in a room w just a bed, wilbur goes to explode l’manburg but techno exposes him (jschlatt is good in this one), n wilbur is caught
Tommy dies from starvation in the game just as wilbur is caught and they all panic They have no clue where tommy is but wilbur (who is bad but not that bad that he’d let tommy die over n over from starving) shows them where he is and his bed spawnpoint
But tommy isnt there and they panic because
It shows when somebody dies
Doesnt show when they permadeath
Does show when they Leave the Game
So they all panic but actually tommy’s just in the respawn menu, tired of everything and disassociating. He snaps out of it because of techno :)
written
Coconut 2020 Win AU
what if fundy and niki initially won the election and became presidents..
me imagining reactions
fundy n niki: celebrating, happy etc
jschlatt (bc i love making him a good guy): sighs, shakes their hands tho and says congrats etc
wilbur on the other hand: betrayed, accusing, trying to take tommy and leave - tommy refuses
Citizenship to Run
Jschlatt wins but then Wilbur laughs and is like “lol thought u were joking bc only citizens of L’manburg can run, and ur only a guest” and that’s basically what happens
if you want to use one of these prompts, go ahead!! if it says written under it, that means i’ve written it on my ao3 Cherry_TheGenZ and it’d be cool if you could just mention me <3
i will also be writing this so just mention my tumblr !! give me CLOUT

Michael Jordan screwed Riley gambling killed father My favorite and best player ever and forever.Yes he made most of his money the hard way.

Single Mothers Will Probably Cry During Every Episode Of Queen’s Gambit - Episode 5
Beth has been listening to all of her mother’s advice. Episode after episode. She just needs a lot of time to process it, and she doesn’t need it all at once. But when she needs it, shes uses it.
In Episode 4, Middle Game, Alice was completely absent and Beth was completely lost. She listened to Alma’s advice, which was downright bad (your emotions are your strength) and she lost against Borgov. She also lost Alma and started flirting with substance abuse.
The lesson from Episode 4 was “Don’t block me out”, and I finished my essay with a note about how it’s important for young women to identify with their mothers in order to become balanced individuals, with an “integrated personality”.
Beth learned in Episode 4 that she needs to identify with her mother, even if this is scary. She also understands that the world might be telling her that her mother is a freak. But at the same time, the world is telling her that Alma was in the right. Drinking heavily, the way Alma was doing it, is completely accepted in society (Alma drank on airplanes, at the hotel and in restaurants). But Alma died, which seems to have left a mark on Beth.
If the world was wrong about Alma, than the world is also probably wrong about Alice.
And so for the first time since the series has started, we hear Alice speak, we hear her say something else than “Close her eyes”.
Lesson 5 : The Strongest Person is the person who isn’t scared of being alone.
I’ll go ahead and quote the entire sequence, because it’s just that beautiful and meaningful to me:
“Dark’s nothing to be afraid of. In fact, I’d go as far as saying as there’s nothing to be afraid of. Anywhere. The Strongest Person is the person who isn’t scared of being alone. It’s other people you got to worry about. Other people. They’ll tell you what to do... how to feel. Before you know it... you’re pouring your life out in search of something other people told you to go look for. Someday you’re going to be all alone so you need to figure out how to take care of yourself.”
The episode starts with Beth coming home to Kentucky after she’s lost Alma in Mexico. Beltik calls her and offers her to train her. He aknowledges that she is q far better player than he ever will, however, he thinks he might have something to contribute in order to prepare her for the next championship where she needs to win against Benny.
Half of the episode shows us this growing intimacy between Beth and Beltik. He shares his books with her, cooks for her, waits for her on the porch as she comes back from grocery shopping. She even goes as far as inviting him to live with her for a while.
When he kisses her, she even encourages him. But once they’ve had sex, she rolls over, lights a cigarette and starts reading a magazine. This is bizarre behavior coming from a woman. We, viewers aren’t used to this. We usually expect the woman to want to talk, giggle and make plans for the future. But Beth is emotionally detached from the situation. An ice queen. Where did she leard this. What model is she using?
Of course - she is using Alice’s advice.
The thing with single mothers that i think most people don’t understand, is that they aren’t looking for a new husband to adopt their kids and play house with them. They are single mothers. They want to be single and at the same time they are taking care of their children. Showing up for their descendants. Single Mother isn’t a stop before regaining the town of Married Mom. It is where the train stops and these women get off. They aren’t trying to remove themselves from that situation.
This is mostly why society hates single mothers and tries it’s best to discourage them.
It makes married women extremely uncomfortable. The reason is makes them uncomfortable is married women deal with a lot of abuse in their own homes. And they stay in these situations of abuse because they don’t always know how to exit them. Most of the time they don’t have the financial ressources to exit these environments. They stay in unfulfilling marriages because they believe that single motherhood is the only thing worse than that. This is why when they meet single mothers, they tend to encourage them to find themselves a new partner. It’s painful for them to imagine that there is another way.
Men dislke single mothers because they perceive cingle mother to be defiant. They believe single mothers hate men, or actively campaign against them. They find it important to let single mothers know that they are good men. That they are good fathers and good husbands. If they cannot convince the single mothers of this, they might change their tone and become agressive, and accuse the single mother of being bitter or resentful.
In general, the message we send single mothers the message that it’s just oo hard, and that they can’t raise children by themselves. And to make sure their message gets across they represent single mothers in pop culture as failures.
Single mothers might be poor and they might be tired, but at least they don’t have a man in their home terrifying them, harassing them, destroying their personalities, bringing down their self esteem, being manipulative and dominant every chance they get.
Single mothers are women who once believed in having children with a man, and realized at some point that if they stayed in that situation they would quite literally lose their minds. Think I’m exagerating? Look at Alma.
The episode is called Fork, and in chess it:
“is a tactic whereby a single piece makes two or more direct attacks simultaneously. Most commonly two pieces are threatened, which is also sometimes called a double attack . The attacker usually aims to gain material by capturing one of the opponent's pieces.”
In the first half of the Episode, Beltik is obviously the attacker. He is the one who calls Beth on the phone and shows up at her house to play chess. The name of the episode tells us he wants to attack two of her pieces simultaneously. The purpose of the fork is for the attacker to take at least one of the pieces they attack. The defendent can only save one.
I would argue that Beltik launched an attack on Beth’s mind and her body. Beth never surrendered her mind, instead she gave him sex and moved on. Thus, Beth is maintaining her intellectual independance, her inner peace & her most prized possession: her clarity.
If Beth had given him her mind, and kept her body, say saved it for mariage, for might’ve lost her drive, and never made it to Moscow, which we know is the ultimate destination for this brilliant young mind.
After a couple of weeks, Beltik understands that he won’t get Beth to settle down with him, and that all she cares about is Chess. She would probably refuse if he asked her to marry him. He leaves, and as he exits the home he lets her know that he’s figured out her addiction to the tranquilizers. That’s a very dominant move, but Beth is so strong that she doesn’t even bat an eye.
Instead, we see her sleeping in the master bedroom, smoking in bed and listening to cassettes in Russian as she studies Borgov’s personality. She is lazer focused on what her goals are and gives herself the means to achieve them.
The second part of the episode takes place at the Ohio State University where the 1967 U.S. Championship is held. Benny and Beth exchange some snide remarks as they gaze onto their competitors. They both know they are by far the best players and they will probably compete against each other at the final. In Vegas, they were co-champions. If she wins, she goes to Europe. But can she get past him? Can she beat him?
She certainly seems like she wants to. She asks him why he carries that silly knife around, or when she finds him lecturing a college student about Chess she asks “found yourself a reporter did you?”.
Benny wants her to meet him at the Student Union to have a couple of beers. At first she says no, but later she allows herself to be talked into it. They play speed chess and he wins. Over and over again.
The next day, he finds her on campus and says “It’s gonna be you or me”. She responds “Are you trying to psych me out?”
She ends up winning the game in 30 moves. Just like she gave Beltik sex, in exchange for her freedom, she gave Benny that glorious night at the student union, where all of the boys watched as he won speed chess. She sacrified that for the title - which gets her to Paris, than Moscow, where she belongs.
Alice’s advice was never to fear being alone. There’s a lot of strategies people use to avoid being alone. Shacking up with someone they had sex with once, which Beth could’ve done with Beltik is a way. Being worried about what the college students from Ohio think about your speed chess is another way.
The last scene before playing the match we see Beth gazing at the college students engaging in small talk, as they sit on the grass ouside of the buildings. She sits on the bench, at ease with herself. She doesn’t need anyone by her side to feel okay. That is her strength; that is what gets her past Benny and Beltik and across the Atlantic ocean to Paris.

“So What’s Band Like” pt. 2
aka random stuff people in my marching band have done but make it reminiscing on my freshman marching season edition and more focused on general events then what specific people have done
okay so like just to cover bases that one good percussionist from part one is the only percussionist that continued on into high school band
which is a fucking upgrade if you ask me
also i’m the only flute of my grade so i was flute baby™ last year
and then oboe baby when concert season came around
or as i like to call it
boboe™
oh and don’t fool yourself into thinking we have an oboe section either
it’s literally just me and my friend
anyway lets get deeper in to it then your boyfriend/S.O will ever be in you
or then you’ll ever be in your girlfriend/S.O
I ain’t gonna assume your situation
first band competition of the year we got stuck in a very hot band bus in a thunderstorm for like probably over an hour
we ended up being one of the only bands that actually stayed and performed which was cool
what was also cool is that we sang the 99 bottles of beer on the wall song and actually made it to 0
i’m also proud to say that one of the people who started that was my crush at the time, and my boyfriend now
how chaotic of him
but then again
he’s a percussionist
also my section leaders piccolo decided to just d i e and she couldn’t play for our entire performance at that competition
moving on
catch us drooling over a 200 plus member band at an away game with an elaborate Aladdin themed show
that same band played megalovania as a stand tune and when I say my band dropped all conversation and bopped to that shit I mean it
also the sunset that night looked like the teletubbie sunrise
when i informed my now boyfriend and my section leader of this they both looked at me like “why the fuck did you just ruin that beautiful sunset”
it is what it is
one time we had a flute hangout after school and before a Friday night away football game
except make it like the flute section featuring the alto sax section leader and my now boyfriend (who if you don’t remember is a percussionist)
oh and also briefly featuring one of our drum majors from last year and a trombonist
anyway we ate little caesars pizza at a playground in a neighborhood near the school
we also played on said playground
in the process putting my kermit plushie, who will most likely be a reoccurring character in this series, in the baby swing and pushing him
we then made friendship bracelets but my now boyfriend didn’t know how
so i did what anyone who knows how to make friendship bracelets and who’s crushing on someone who doesn’t know how to make friendship bracelets would do
i taught him how to make friendship bracelets
we also sat on the band bus together to and from that nights away game where I continued to help him make a friendship bracelet and then we looked at memes on the way back
some of them were funny, some of them weren’t
i laughed at all of them
why?
because i was and am…
a fucking simp
we hosted a competition the same day that we marched a two mile parade so basically everyone went home and crashed that night
Me, my friend, and my now boyfriend spent like over fifteen minutes trying to find this one band just so we could hand them a single candygram to give to some kid
that kid better have appreciated that candygram
My two friends and I also received a joint airgram from our moms so we all prompted to split the tiny piece of card stock into three and we each have a piece
It’s almost like a friendship bracelet
but one hundred times easier to loose
moving onto big boy competition territory
aka the Atlantic Coastal Championships
or at least i think that’s what ACC stands for
We were the first people to perform that day so we had to wake up at the ass crack of dawn to get to the competition in time
Like legit imagine a bunch of tired band kids on a school bus at 6am
It was actually kind of nice and very quiet
My now boyfriend and I watched Coraline on my chromebook on the way there
We also watched Coco on the way back but we aren’t there yet
I brought my Kermit plushie, as I should’ve, but he did not escape unscathed
My now boyfriend accidentally dropped him in his spilled chocolate milkshake which had made a fairly accurate rendition of Willy Wonka’s chocolate river on the stands
He was more upset about it then I was honestly and apologized a bunch while frantically trying to scrub the chocolate stain out of Kermit’s green plush flesh with his jeans
My now boyfriend also decided to spin Kermit up in the air like a helicopter and Kermit nearly flew over the back end of the bleachers since we were sat in the top row
Luckily he didn’t fly over but we quickly stopped throwing him around and Kermit promptly sat on the bleachers next to us for the rest of ACCs
Moving forward, I would highlight the game directly after I actually got together with my boyfriend but not a single fucking thing happened
Other then the fact that the concession stand ran out of hot chocolate
But not before my boyfriend, our two friends, and I could get our hands on some
Flash forward, our football team, in an act of what was probably some form of witchcraft or just downright luck, qualified for playoffs and the first playoff game was a FOUR HOUR drive away
They really said “okay everybody lets travel to the other side of the state for a single football game”
And before you say “well it would take a lot longer to get to the other side of my state!”
pack it up west coast/midwest
I live on the east coast our states are t i n y
we had to leave for this game in the middle of the school day right after lunch which meant i had to bring two separate book bags to school that day
one bag for band and one bag for school
regardless we drove on the bus through mountains and trees for four hours before stopping off to have dinner at some rando restaurant
and no offense to old white people but like it must have been senior night or some shit because when I tell you the only people in that restaurant were like 70 to 80 band kids and a bunch of old white people I am not joking
It was terrifying
And I mean like I’m not inherently scared of old white people
But what I am is non-binary growing up in a conservative area of a conservative state
And I was also holding the hand of my wonderful boyfriend who happens to be a person of color
I was scared I was about to be hate crimed
Or he was about to get hate crimed
Luckily I think the fact that we were part of a flock of like 80 other teenagers all wearing red shirts and sweatpants scared them off
Or maybe they didn’t even notice and my social anxiety just said “they’re looking at you, love ;)” when they probably weren’t
We also ran the ice cream machine at that place dry
Anyway this was like November and it was super fucking cold outside so the home schools band invited us inside the school building when we got there since it was still a bit before the game
I got to talk to some of the flutes and they were super chill
We also made this weird ass dance circle where we went back and forth doing steps that I forget but remind me of the cotton eyed joe for some reason
Maybe that’s what we were dancing?
I don’t remember I just know like the entire low brass section plus a select group of the upper woodwinds/percussion were all in on it
I also remember what I think was one of the flutes looking at me and my boyfriend who was hugging me from behind and being very physically affectionate, as he usually is, and mentioning something about wondering what instrument he played
If in some miraculous event you are reading this mystery flute girl, he’s a percussionist
you’re welcome
Nothing really stands out about the game itself other then how fucking cold it was and the fact that our football team won…
by a single point
We then all enjoyed the four hour ride back to the school
Most people spent it sleeping as it was like ten pm
Yeah you do the math we left at like 10pm
JK I’m not gonna make you do math we got back to the school at like 2am
Also notice how I said most people spent it sleeping
I probably would have been one of those people
However my lovely boyfriend, who again I do love, decided that a can of Mountain Dew at 10pm was a good idea
Baby, I love you, but why
10pm is too late for a Mountain Dew
We did end up sleeping for like an hour tho which was nice while it lasted
But then we had the glorious “Everyone we are about thirty minutes away from the school please call your parents to come pick you up” wake up call from our band director
And when I tell you that in that moment it felt like I was in between two different plains of existence
I am not kidding
It is a very interesting vibe
Anyway I apologize for how painfully long that was but I literally could go into so much more detail. This is just grazing the surface of the experience that was my freshman marching season. However, I’m stopping myself here. If for some reason you want to read more of this and aren’t willing to wait for me to make the part three that will be directed toward this years socially distanced band season, you can read the first one of these which has a remarkably funnier collection of events and a lot less cussing. What can I say, I was an eighth grader in middle school band with an instructor who was very lenient on what we did when we weren’t playing. Until next time, this has been Elliot, signing off until i inevitably find something else interesting to share with the internet.

While it looked like M. Bellucci already settled for the title thanks to his lights-out game, Roman steadily absorbed some pace before finding the right momentum as the former tightened up near what could have been the finish line. This set showed the equal importance of the follow-up and the setup of the set, especially as the set went deeper.
Roman initially had 3 break points as he outhit M. Bellucci's forehands, with the latter struggled to find his depth. However, a notable unreturned serve and an ace saved the latest 2 break points that forced the deuce, followed by a service game hold to 1-0. Afterward, a working forehand smash from the Italian qualifier secured his first break point, followed by another smooth forehand down-the-line winner 2 points later, but Roman still saved them and held his serves to 1-1. After holding his serves to 2-1, M. Bellucci broke to 3-1 due to Roman's forehand error, followed by its consolidation to 4-1.
Despite almost being dominated by M. Bellucci, Roman hung in there thanks to a service game hold (4-2), his forehand passes to M. Bellucci's forehand error minimized the gap before setting up a one-point lead, ultimately breaking to 4-3 before levelling the play with a hold (4-4). By then, M. Bellucci held to 5-4, and leveled the play through his smooth forehand winner. Another error from the first seed created the Italian's initial match point, which was fumbled thanks to Roman's forehand to M. Bellucci's backhand error, but another match point was saved in a similar manner 2 points later, thus Roman held his serves to 5-5 afterward.
In the next game, Roman's forehand pass perfectly took advantage of M. Bellucci's errors as he equalized the point through a forehand pass, breaking to 6-5 then. The former then earned his chance to serve for the first set, where even though M. Bellucci's jumping smash saved Roman's earliest set point, the latter converted it to take the second set 7-5, thus forcing the deciding set to determine the championship.

“What was your first reaction when you saw the video of the white cop kneeling on George Floyd’s neck while Floyd croaked, “I can’t breathe”?
If you’re white, you probably muttered a horrified, “Oh, my God” while shaking your head at the cruel injustice. If you’re black, you probably leapt to your feet, cursed, maybe threw something (certainly wanted to throw something), while shouting, “Not @#$%! again!” Then you remember the two white vigilantes accused of murdering Ahmaud Arbery as he jogged through their neighborhood in February, and how if it wasn’t for that video emerging a few weeks ago, they would have gotten away with it. And how those Minneapolis cops claimed Floyd was resisting arrest but a store’s video showed he wasn’t. And how the cop on Floyd’s neck wasn’t an enraged redneck stereotype, but a sworn officer who looked calm and entitled and devoid of pity: the banality of evil incarnate.
Maybe you also are thinking about the Karen in Central Park who called 911 claiming the black man who asked her to put a leash on her dog was threatening her. Or the black Yale University grad student napping in the common room of her dorm who was reported by a white student. Because you realize it’s not just a supposed “black criminal” who is targeted, it’s the whole spectrum of black faces from Yonkers to Yale.
You start to wonder if it should be all black people who wear body cams, not the cops.
What do you see when you see angry black protesters amassing outside police stations with raised fists? If you’re white, you may be thinking, “They certainly aren’t social distancing.” Then you notice the black faces looting Target and you think, “Well, that just hurts their cause.” Then you see the police station on fire and you wag a finger saying, “That’s putting the cause backward.”
You’re not wrong — but you’re not right, either. The black community is used to the institutional racism inherent in education, the justice system and jobs. And even though we do all the conventional things to raise public and political awareness — write articulate and insightful pieces in the Atlantic, explain the continued devastation on CNN, support candidates who promise change — the needle hardly budges.
But COVID-19 has been slamming the consequences of all that home as we die at a significantly higher rate than whites, are the first to lose our jobs, and watch helplessly as Republicans try to keep us from voting. Just as the slimy underbelly of institutional racism is being exposed, it feels like hunting season is open on blacks. If there was any doubt, President Trump’s recent tweets confirm the national zeitgeist as he calls protesters “thugs” and looters fair game to be shot.
Yes, protests often are used as an excuse for some to take advantage, just as when fans celebrating a hometown sports team championship burn cars and destroy storefronts. I don’t want to see stores looted or even buildings burn. But African Americans have been living in a burning building for many years, choking on the smoke as the flames burn closer and closer. Racism in America is like dust in the air. It seems invisible — even if you’re choking on it — until you let the sun in. Then you see it’s everywhere. As long as we keep shining that light, we have a chance of cleaning it wherever it lands. But we have to stay vigilant, because it’s always still in the air.
Police put a gun to my head at 12. Tired of reading about racism? I’m tired of living it
So, maybe the black community’s main concern right now isn’t whether protesters are standing three or six feet apart or whether a few desperate souls steal some T-shirts or even set a police station on fire, but whether their sons, husbands, brothers and fathers will be murdered by cops or wannabe cops just for going on a walk, a jog, a drive. Or whether being black means sheltering at home for the rest of their lives because the racism virus infecting the country is more deadly than COVID-19.
What you should see when you see black protesters in the age of Trump and coronavirus is people pushed to the edge, not because they want bars and nail salons open, but because they want to live. To breathe.
Worst of all, is that we are expected to justify our outraged behavior every time the cauldron bubbles over. Almost 70 years ago, Langston Hughes asked in his poem “Harlem”: “What happens to a dream deferred? /… Maybe it sags / like a heavy load. / Or does it explode?”
Fifty years ago, Marvin Gaye sang in “Inner City Blues”: “Make me wanna holler / The way they do my life.” And today, despite the impassioned speeches of well-meaning leaders, white and black, they want to silence our voice, steal our breath.
So what you see when you see black protesters depends on whether you’re living in that burning building or watching it on TV with a bowl of corn chips in your lap waiting for “NCIS” to start.
What I want to see is not a rush to judgment, but a rush to justice.”
