Can the Hawks continue the streak?

As All-Star weekend finishes up players, fans, and coaches alike are all asking the same question. How will the Hawks do the second half of the season and into the playoffs?  As many Hawks fans know too well ESPN and many other sports analysts say that the Hawks are a mediocre team that usually make it to the playoffs but are eliminated early every season.  Now halfway through the season, the Hawks have the second best record in the NBA and just finished a 19 game win streak while having four out of five of the Hawks’ starters in the All-Star game.  Some sceptics have changed their initial opinions about the Hawks while others still believe the Hawks do not have what it takes to contend for a national championship. Many critics say that the Hawks do not have a “superstar” to take control of the ball game and make important shots when needed.  Most teams have this type of player if not more than one, some examples being LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry.  Another criticism of the Hawks is their lack of a tall “big” or center position. Al Horford is the size of a power forward but he plays center for the Hawks.  Although most of the time this does not affect the outcome of the game, when playing against a team with a dominant or star caliber big like Anthony Davis the stats show it can definitely hurt the Hawks in the rebounding department.

               Although these criticisms do hold water I think that the Hawks’ positive attributes outweigh the negative ones.  Some people may agree that in order for a team to go the distance, especially during playoff time, they need to have a superstar. In most cases I would agree if we are talking about an average NBA team.  However the Hawks are not an average NBA team, they pass the ball better than most and understand the true meaning of team basketball.  Everyone on the team has ability to score from beyond the three point line which allows the team to space the floor extremely well and makes them hard to defend.  On any given night all five starters will score ten or more points, something that many teams do not achieve.  Having a superstar can carry a team to the promised land, it is something that Michael Jordan proved many times throughout his career and it is what made him the greatest of all time.  The greatness of the Hawks is team basketball and it is what got them to where they are at this point in the season and if they continue to play the way they have been playing I do not see how anyone can stop them.
