ATLA MixedUp! AU part X: The final boss

This character is gonna be the final "villain" of the AU (without counting the adults) and will take Azula's place in the story. We know it's a dude, since only Sokka and Jet are left, and that he's a firebender, since all the villains are firebenders and I would like to keep the story Fire Nation-focused

And this is Sokka!

Having him as the 10 was the exact situation I was semi-opposed to, because I made plans with Katara and now I'm gonna have to change them xD. It's fine, now that I reflect back on it the idea of the Fire Nation heir being the Avatar is an interesting one.

Anyway, Prince Sokka. I think he'd be a remarkable villain. He has Azula's wits and ingenuiosity, and his change of background probably gives him decent leardership & public speaking capacities now. He can be calculating, cold headed if he wants to. Most of the time, he's just kinda sassy, althought not as goofy as the original Sokka. Like Azula in the show, he doesn't let his feelings interefere with his mission, and.... Probably not life in general either. Very healthy.

Sokka is not gonna be in the beginning of the story, or even the middle. In order, it's firstly Suki who chases our team Avatar around, then Aang gets on the hunt with a couple of high-ranking admirals and his own platoon of soldiers, and finally after the Northern Siege, when nothing seems to work, Prince Sokka reunites his childhood friends and gets to it.

Now let's talk about this outfit. I tried to change things a bit. That is all. Goodbye.

I know I said previously Ty Lokka was gonna happen. Jeez, I really opened a can of worms with this one didn't I?

(I know that's not how genetics work. Let me be.)

His father, Hakoda, was the last waterbender of the Great Southern Water Tribe. He was kidnapped by Fire Nation soldiers during the last raid on the Tribe. In an attempt to conclude a treaty with the Tribe, which was still full of strong and driven soldiers, the Firelord at the time forced him to marry his third-born daughter. The Tribe's Chief accepted the terms, but their soldiers didn't. They left the next morning, taking ships and weapons in their fight against the Fire Nation. This didn't stop the Southern Water Tribe from flourishing, becoming stronger thanks to their alliance with the Fire Nation. To the cost of their independancy, maybe, but their chief thinks it worth it.

Sokka never managed to connect with his father. He was too weak, ideals too kind and contrary to the Fire Nation's. He was interested in diplomacy and treaties, like his stupid little sister. When he misteriously dissapeared after his grandfather's unexpected death, he rejoiced.

Much to his dismay, Sokka was the only one out of the two siblings who inherited his father's traitorous and bastardly eye color. To this day, he still hates when people mention it, even if some of them admire them or find comfort in them.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part IX: Morally Ambiguous Character

This one isn't really gonna be on the good guys' side, and neither on the bad guys'. I think it's important to have some of those in the story.

It's Toph! This fits her. What element does she bend?

Fire! We've really hit the jackpot with these ashy bois, uh. Her subelement is gonna be thermal vision, so to change this up a bit and not have everyone live in the same place, I'm gonna randomize the place where she lives.

Earth Kingdom! So.... Well fuck this, she's the Queen now. A very puppet and actually-not-very-politically-powerful one, but still. She gets to appear at banquets and wear pretty dresses (that she can't see, but uh). She will have her very own Long Feng, chief of the Dai Li who poses for her and lowkey manipulates her, but we're gonna randomize that later

As for the drawing, I took some inspiration from the actual Earth King. I really like that little cape thing, very pretty. Added gold on it because of course who do you think I am. I based the crown on the Earth Queen's too.

I could spit you some reasonning behind the untied hair like a metaphor for the fact in this AU she is supposed to have ultimate power but in the end no matter the appearances she's still trapped but Imma be honest I just thought it looked cool and also didn't know how to draw the bun.

Her personality stays pretty much the same. She's still a sassy child who has to pretend to be perfect and follow the rules, althought she is much more high standing there. No Earth Rumble turnament, tho.

As for the firebender thing, it's a secret. The Dai Li didn't know who her mother was. She never learned how to control it but can use thermal vision. It's not gonna be very important to the plot, except in the scenes where team Avatar is with her, but it's just gonna be in the palace.

Cause, as I said in the beginning, she isn't really on anybody's side. She just doesn't really care. She's not gonna join team avatar on their travels.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part XI: One More Ally To Wrap This Up

And our only character left is Jet! So we'll pick him, lol, no need to randomize anything. I do not know yet what his role in the story will be, I'll make it up as I go ig. Anyway, his element is....

Water! Sub-element?

1 is bloodbending, which is very exciting! I like how this works with Jet's character, I'm not gonna have to change him too much to make him go to those extremes.

He lives at the North Pole, I guess? Probably is one of Pakku's (best) students. That's good news, because our team Avatar was going there!

As in canon, his parents were murdered by the Fire Nation, and that instilled in him a boilling-hot hatred. He doesn't make a difference between soldiers and civillians; if it breathes fire, it has to die. This of course will become a problem when our beloved avatar will pop up at the North Pole. Thankfully, he is not a sexist moron (because I say so) so it's possible to make him like her at least. Just... Hard. It helps that she's adorable and has the same sense of justice as him, tho.

I didn't feel like just letting him be inimportant, so boom, he's the heir to the northern throne now. He wasn't supposed to be, his uncle (mother's side), who is the current chief, was supposed to be the one keeping the line going, but his daughter sadly died after a difficult birth. Jet was picked as the heir when he was around 14 years old, when his uncle noticed his proficiency in fight and leadership. So he has kind of like the same place as Hahn, when you wipe off all the bullshit.

Jet is hard-headed and, as I said, has a strong sense of justice. This can be beneficial, when he protects his city or leads his soldiers, but can also cause him to be too obstinate and refuse to change his mind. Basically, he's a good leader as long as you don't disagree with him lol. He dislikes traditions and would much rather do things the fast way.

That's only a headshot of him, because the rest of his clothing is pretty standard for the NWT. But of course I gave him some piercings, he probably is the atla character most likely to have some, period. Also blood moon background yeeeeeee.

Oh, right. I almost forgot he was a bloodbender. It's probably not much of a stretch you have to do to see why he would think that's a necessary technique to developp, uh? Talking about that, he'd probably want to learn as many techniques as possible to help in the fight against the fire nation, so I can see him learning healing in secret. This bad boy is gonna be such a good teacher ! (If he wants to)

Am I gonna get him abducted by the Dai Li and murdered by a peeble? Mmmh? That sure would be creative and interesting writing.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part VI: Friend Blessed By A Spirit

Who's gonna be the Avatar ally lucky enough to find their way around a spirit and get blessed by them (with the obligatory hair color change, obviously)?

Ty Lee!! That's so cool 👀 Althought i'd like to know about the TWO MAIN CHARACTER'S SIBLINGS first lmao stop making me wait xD What's her element?

FIRE! Subending?

Holy shit, it's combustion bending! I hoped I'd get one of them as a combustion bender 👉👈. Althought damn, Ty Lee, you got a busy life

So here's her little backstory I crafted with two sticks and a piece of scotch: I like the idea that being a combustion bender is a skill you learn, with special facilities where combustion benders are trained? So Ty Lee would have been a part of one of those facilities. She'd always been very spiritual, and empathetic even if her "masters" tried to force it out of her.

So one day, she somehow manages to escape, hiding among the Fire Nation people. Ported by the tales of her childhood and her strong beliefs, she manages to find the Sun warriors and the Dragons, who deem her worthy and bless her. Her hair changes color, and her firebending gets stronger. It greatly helps her overcome her trauma, by finding another way to bend, without rage and anger. She will teach that to the Avatar, alongside helping her perfect her Firebending. Because, maybe Katara's learning experience was incomplete? I know I said she mastered Firebending before, but I wasn't sure she'd get a teacher. So I retcon myself lol.

She's... A very good addition to the group to say the least. She's probably extremely powerful?! I think the Dragons helped her developp her actual firebending outside of combustion, and she's trying to teach herself more about it. Her and Katara can exchange about it! :) Not making Katara a full blown Combustion bender btw, just teachings her a few attacks and how to concentrate fireballs, kind of like what Ozai did during his final fight with Aang in the show. It will be VERY useful in Katara's final fight (?)

Maybe after finding the dragons she adopted a nomadic lifestyle in the Fire Nation, kind of what she did with the Circus, and that's how she falls on the Gaang. I picked the Western Air Temple as her background because I felt like it, so... That's where she meets Team Avatar. Because of what she learned and her connection with the spirits, she will feel like she has to join with the Avatar, because nobody else can teach her that. Oh! She's probably Katara's spiritual guide :)

Even with her relatively tragic and probably more traumatising backstory, she's still one of the most cheerful and enthusiatic members of Team Avatar.

Her final design (yes i know I did three of them. She's an interesting character okay xD) includes wide and loose clothing (althought it's probably not the most practical for fighting?) In contrast to her Facility clothes. I imagined she wouldn't want to be reminded of them, and always hated the tight clothes and how they felt. She kept the belt tho, it's probably practical and also was a reassuring constant. The weight, all that. I also gave her another belt, looking more utilitarian, and some bombs are her side. I imagine she's also kind of an engineer, and uses tools to help her. So maybe she was trained in swords, or knives too? Just to make her as efficient as possible. Oh, btw! To fit in with the engineer point, she's gonna date Sokka at some point because I say so. Yes, i don't have a clue what he does yet, but I don't care. Ty Lokka for the win xD

I didn't want to just give her back her clown costume, plus I feel like it's more adapted to... Acrobatics and shit than firebending

Oh, and just for the fun of it, her and Azula hit it off in half a second and become best friends after 2 days.

Ok, this is all nice and shit, but I need an airbender 😭

By the way, if book 1 was Earth, then they went to the north pole (passing by the wrstern air temple first) and lastly (because it's gonna be very hard to find one) katara is gonna learn airbending, we might as well just reverse the whole avatar cycle. Just sayin'

Oh. And also. This is my hot girl summer so I'm adding jet to my list of characters, and a "friend with a rebel cell against the fire nation" category. Just because I can.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part VIII: Leader of a group against the Fire Nation

This one is pretty self-explanatory xD This character remplaces Jet thematically in the story. They problably won't have a very major role, but they're a fighter who actively rebels against the Fire Nation. Who is it?

Mai! You know what, that kinda makes sense. Her element ?

Fire! You know, the concept of someone having a rebel cell IN the fire nation against it is rather interesting. Adds a layer of political intrigue too! Subbending?

None! Fair enough, can't have everything lol

So Mai is a firebender, but I don't think that's where most of her strenght comes from. She's mostly good at leading people, strategies, being smart. She also maybe used to have some weight in court, because of her dad or something, before she betrayed the nation?

She's a hardened, brave leader. Her famous poker face will be extremely useful in what she's doing. She is precise and calculating, not very merciful, kind of has the same outward appearance of power as canon Azula. Her father was executed after a suspiscion of treason (he didn't do anything), then her family was shamed and abandonned by the court, and that's what made her snap and betray for real.

Since we're apparently gonna make all the fire nation kids know each other, I will make them into a big group of friends. Mai knew Katara, and gave her a way to contact her in the future, and that's how she finds her. I don't know exactly why yet, maybe to get them to the north pole? Something to do with the invasion?

As for her outfit, I wanted to change it up a bit. She's a runaway/wanted by the state in this AU, so she'll be fitted to disapear in the shadows and go unoticed. She's gonna keep her ninja skills Ive decided xD I also tried to get a similar shape as canon Jet's clothes going, lmk if it was sucessful. Also I decided to cut some of her bangs, didn't think it was that practical in fights (as a firebender, she can't just shoot people from far away) (also i don't like drawing bangs) I left some on either side of her face tho. Oh, and I kept the color sheme to try and make her more recognisable lol.

Since I'm not really seeing a 14yo (who is not Azula) created a whole rebellion all by herself, I'll probably age her up or something.

We now only have three characters left: Sokka, Toph, and Jet! One of them will be the main villain of this series!

ATLA MixedUp!AU part VII: Ennemy n°2

This is gonna be the second one of the secondary (book 2) villains.

Zuko!! Finally!! I was waiting for him. My heart is racing right now, wew. Him being a villain kinda makes sense, since he wasn't with Azula since the beginning.

Air!! Another very waited for element xD I didn't expect it to fall on good ol' zuzu tho. Since there is, to put it plainly, no Air Nation, where does he live?

Fire Nation! Makes sense.

Since he probably won't be fighting with Airbending just yet, I'll give him back his Dao Swords ;)

So... Zuko, Zuko... What is your story? We know his sister lives in the Earth Kingdom and is an Earthbender. He's Fire Nation. So their parents are probably each from one of those (we'll randomize that later). I have litteraly no clue how they got separated, tho. But I'm gonna say they know each other, because it's funnier.

As for his outfit, well, it's pretty standard fire nation fighting bodysuit. He has golden armbands too because they're pretty and (!) little touch, he has a long flowing piece of fabric on his shoulder because it kinda looks like the Air nomad robes + is something fire nation people wear + I thought that looked cool and was like a.... 1000 IQ design.

Also he has no scar, because.... Duh, and he has! Long hair!!!! This is very pretty I think. I also think he deserves to have a neat design after the fashion disaster his book 1 haircut was. So in this AU he just has drip from the start, and will keep it.

He is with the Fire Nation and Aang at the beginning, but he is going to eventually, of course, join team Avatar and learn/teach Airbending with/to Katara. Maybe when he learns he's an airbender, maybe because of something else, idk.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part V: Ennemy n°1

We, uh... took a big break from this AU. Worst thing about this was that I had already drawn 3 of the next characters and written down most of their backstories, I just... Didn't post them. Good news is I will continue this AU! But anyway! Let's take it back to where we left it. We have Katara, our fire nation avatar, Azula, her first travel companion and prodigy mentalbender, Suki, the swampbender who is chasing them, and Yue, the Princess of the desert.

Now for the first generic villain we got! Yes, btw, I'm alterning villains and heroes so it's more interesting. This might be a villain that's travelling with the main villain group? Or not? We'll see ok, I can't say it right now.

ITS AANG OMG (This is my legit reaction, I screamed) *chanting* Evil Aang! Evil Aang!

Element?

He's a non-bender! Ironic, for the Ex-Avatar xD What nation is he a part of?

Fire Nation! Hey, that makes sense. His weapon?

... A sword. Ok. Very well. So I guess he's kind of a piandao?

Wait, I just got a thought. Katara's clothes kinda look like Piandao's too, tbh. So maybe she was another one of his pupils, alongside Aang? They're ex-best friends (... With maybe a pinch of one-sided crush? 👀), both being from the Fire Nation? It would also mean Katara knows how to use a sword, which is one hell of a sexy idea. I... Ok, I love anything that involves swords.

Aang's main characteristics in the show are probably his compassionate nature and wish to have fun. However, I feel like those are more generic Air Nomads traits and not that specific to him. Plus, positive traits taken too far can become negative. So here's what I got: He felt really betrayed by Katara's decision to leave him. He felt like she had abused of his niceness, and resolved to not trust that easily again.

Aang is smart, he usually seems to breeze throught his problems and opposition like it's nothing. He's very quick on his feet, and has a very agressive fighting style.

He's also somewhat terrifying, because he doesn't take anything seriously, even murder. Everything is just a game for him, and he will probably play with Katara on several occasions. Azula is a good match for him, because she's more level headed and won't hesitate to hurt him. Plus, she can bend his sword. I also imagine he has a group of soldiers accompanying him, or else he's probs gonna struggle a bit. That, or the rest of the villains!

He's dressed a bit like piandao, with h a i r... And also a headband because I thought it looked cool. And it makes sense. He has two metal swords, but generally only uses one at a time.

ATLA MixedUp! AU part II: The person who discovers the Avatar

So, Avatar Katara got lost somewhere and is in dire need of help. Who's gonna rescue the baby avatar?

Oh God. It's Azula

... What element does Azula control, then?

Earth! And what sub-element (if any?)

She's a metal bender !

Here's how it goes (with the limited info I have for now, especially on their families. Because they both have relatives that are still undetermined :/): Azula, earthbending prodigy, didn't feel like her life at home allowed her to reach her full potential. So one night she takes off to travel across the Earth Kingdom. She fights, she hardens, and one day she discovers metal bending. Amazed by her newfound power, she practices non-stop, of course.

One day, as she's setting camp, she hears scream. She goes to see what's making all that noise, and discovers Katara surrounded by a group of Earth Kingdom soldiers. Knowing that the girl with golden eyes doesn't pose a national threat, Azula takes off to help her. But, althought the two girls' motivation is great, they do not manage to fight off all the soldiers. That's when Katara's Avatar State unlocks, and also when Azula discovers who exactly the girl is. She will then join her on her travels, out of a want to teach her one of the elements she's missing, but also to protect her. They're going to try to find an airbending teacher, which... Is easier said than done!

This Azula is... Nicer, in some way? Yeah. She wasn't raised with the belief everyone else is inferior, so that helps. She does have a pretty nice sense of humor. I'm not too sure on her personality yet, because we'll see about that when I know where she was raised ah ah.

Azula wears comfy fighting clothes, and her hairstyle is practically identical to her fire nation counterpart. I gave her green eyes for now, might change them later on when I know who Zuko (who is still her brother) is. She's a lil rough, a lil bloody, with wraps around her arms and a little scar over her eyebrow. I like to imagine living in nature and fighting for her life wasn't a very relaxing job lol. Yes, I clearly stole the same rock background effect from Katara's drawing. Are they both pieces of metal? Can Katara metalbend? Mmmm.... I don't know xD

P.S (for Azutara stans): Don't get your hopes too up, because I'm still not 100% certain I'm gonna make that happen, but it's clearly a possibility in my mind (if I do happen to write it xD ). After all, who wouldn't have a crush on the hot, badass, independant earthbender??

Here's a DTIYS to celebrate the end of the first round of randomization for the MixedUp! AU ! This AU is an Avatar the last Airbender AU where I randomized each of the 11 main character's roles, nation, bending element and weapons. We ended up with Katara as the Avatar, Azula as her metalbending girlfriend, Suki, Zuko, Aang and Sokka as the main villains and way more! I have a problem!! See, MixedUpAU!Zuko is an airbender, who lives in the Fire Nation, and presumably has one Fire Nation parent and one Earth Kingdom one. ATLA MixedUp! AU masterpost

So I just got an idea... Get in for the ride lol. Inspired by an instagram post.

Basically: I'll create a story, probably fanart too, using randomizers (for element and sub element) for each of my characters. I don't know yet with which character it will start, since the first number I get will decide that!

Background has to stay the same, that's my creative limitation. The Fire Nation attacked and commited genocide on the Air Nomads. People that are related stay related. I'll try to keep everyone (mostly) in character, but it will change a bit depending on their story. There's a special case for Yue, she will be royalty no matter what she ends up as because I feel like it's an important part of her character.

First character picked will be the Avatar, second the person that finds the avatar (remplacing Katara), third the main antagonist of the first book (remplacing Zuko), the two next are friends in the group/bending teachers (toph & sokka), the two next character are also friends, but respectively are the leader of a rebel cell against the Fire Nation (Jet) and have been blessed by a spirit (yue), and the three last are antagonists, with the last one being royalty (mai, ty lee and azula)

ATLA MixedUp! AU part IV: Friend n°1

It might be someone that was travelling with Azula? Or someone the (small, for now) Gaang meets later on? In any case, this is gonna be one of the Avatar's allies/bending teachers, and the next person she meets!

Yue!! Oh my god. I only get girls xD I'm not super happy to get her, I'd like more info on the main characters siblings first?? Plus I don't know how I feel about them meeting her that soon... As a reminder, Yue is gonna stay royalty and probably not join the main gaang no matter what. What's her element?

Earth!! Damn. We only get earthbenders xD ...At least it stays in the same area...? Book 1 is def gonna be Earth lol. Does she have any subbending?

...Sand. Goddamit. We got ourselves a Sand Princess Yue.

Yes, there are two versions of this, one with the face covering and one without. I tried to keep the... Relatively unluxurious style of the Sand benders. So I know it doesn't really make sense they would have a princess, but... Maybe she's just their leader's daughter? Idk. Anyway, she is dressed for the desert, with wide fair clothes and wrappings everywhere to not get hurt by the sand. Yue is still looking a bit more classy than your average sandbender, but nowhere near what she looked like as the Northern Princess. Also, no dress, it's not practical at all. And she got pearls! I figured that's the most practical jewelry that still looked expensive I could give her. Plus it fits the style. Idk.

Now for the story!! Well, I think the gaang is gonna have to get in the desert?? Maybe Azula and Katara, after nearly escaping Suki (the swampbender that's chasing them), ended up at the Oasis and met the professor. Then they decided to go to the library to see if they could find anything about Airbending, since to their knowledge no Airbenders were available to teach the avatar (it's a surprise the cycle still continued without them, btw, but shhh that's a surprise we're gonna explore later). Katara's priority at this point is more to learn all the elements and less to defeat the Fire Nation, since she's still kinda... Conflicted about her native country. So they're not searching for a way to defeat the fire nation, just about airbending. They won't discover the incoming eclipse is what I'm going at. (We still might need to have it happen. Maybe Katara already knows about it since she's a firebender, or Suki might tell them because she's very spiritual (bc swamp). We'll see, I don't even know if I need it to happen) And since they're just here for learning purposes, they obviously won't get chased by the giant owl, and the library won't sink, and that's a good thing because Toph isn't there to hold it.

So, they manage to reach the library (don't ask how, since they don't have Appa) find what they were serching for (or not?? Idk. We'll see with how the rest of the story writes itself) then lowkey get lost in the desert. Thankfully, Azula and Katara are both responsible middle schoolers and no cactus juice is ingested. They fall on the sandbenders, who don't steal anything to them this time, meet Yue, who is still a compassionate and super nice princess, she helps them get out and promises them her people will be there should the Avatar need them.
