Final Fantasy X e X-2: O Legado da Squaresoft e a Transformação na Square Enix

No já longicuo ano de 2014, eu tive a aspiração de me tornar um jornalista de games(pois é). Naquela época, cheguei a escrever uma matéria inteira sobre o meu amado Final Fantasy X e enviei para várias reda��ões de sites e revistas de videogame. Para a minha frustração, nunca recebi uma resposta sequer.

Hoje, reconheço que o texto estava pouco desenvolvido, mas me orgulho do esforço e dedicação que coloquei nele. E como este espaço está pouco a pouco se tornou uma espécie de refúgio para os meus escritos passados, aqui está a tal "matéria" que fiz sobre Final Fantasy X e sua sequência, Final Fantasy X-2.

No início dos anos 2000, a Squaresoft estava em um momento crítico de sua história. Após o sucesso esmagador de *Final Fantasy VII* (1997) e *Final Fantasy VIII* (1999), a empresa se tornou sinônimo de inovação e narrativa cinematográfica nos jogos. No entanto, com *Final Fantasy IX* (2000) sendo uma homenagem nostálgica às raízes da série, a Squaresoft estava se preparando para dar um novo salto tecnológico com o PlayStation 2. Assim, em 2001, *Final Fantasy X* chegava ao mercado, trazendo a série para a nova geração e solidificando o estúdio como um dos maiores criadores de JRPGs da época.

Ao mesmo tempo, a Squaresoft enfrentava dificuldades financeiras. Investimentos arriscados, como o filme *Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within* (2001), não renderam os resultados esperados, deixando a empresa em uma posição vulnerável. Foi nesse contexto que a fusão com a Enix, responsável pela outra grande franquia de RPG, *Dragon Quest*, começou a se tornar uma necessidade. Em 2003, essa fusão foi concluída, criando a **Square Enix**, que traria uma nova era para os fãs da série.

Final Fantasy X*: Um Clássico Imortal

Lançado em julho de 2001, *Final Fantasy X* foi um marco por várias razões. Ele foi o primeiro jogo da série a utilizar dublagem completa, revolucionando a maneira como os personagens eram percebidos pelos jogadores. O título também introduziu uma mudança significativa no sistema de batalha, abandonando o Active Time Battle (ATB) por um sistema de batalha por turnos baseado em uma fila de ações (Conditional Turn-Based Battle, ou CTB), permitindo mais estratégia e planejamento.

O enredo de *Final Fantasy X* se passa em Spira, um mundo devastado por uma entidade destrutiva chamada *Sin*. O jogador acompanha Tidus, um jovem jogador de blitzball, que é transportado para Spira e se junta a uma jovem invocadora, Yuna, em sua jornada para derrotar *Sin*. O jogo explora temas de sacrifício, amor, fé e aceitação do destino, com um desfecho emocionalmente poderoso.

Final Fantasy X-2*: A Primeira Sequência Direta

*Final Fantasy X-2* foi lançado em 2003 e representou um movimento ousado da Square Enix. Era a primeira vez que a série *Final Fantasy* recebia uma sequência direta. Após o final emocional de *FFX*, muitos fãs ficaram curiosos para ver como a história de Yuna e dos outros personagens continuaria.

Diferente de *Final Fantasy X*, o tom de *X-2* era mais leve e otimista, com uma estrutura de jogo mais aberta e um foco maior em missões e exploração. Yuna retorna como a protagonista, agora como uma "caçadora de esferas", buscando respostas sobre os eventos que seguiram a derrota de *Sin*. O sistema de batalha também mudou, trazendo de volta o ATB, mas com uma nova camada de personalização por meio do sistema de *Dresspheres*, que permitia trocar de classe durante as batalhas em tempo real.

Embora tenha dividido a opinião dos fãs por seu tom mais descontraído e mudanças de gameplay, *Final Fantasy X-2* foi um sucesso comercial, provando que a Square Enix estava disposta a inovar mesmo em territórios familiares.

A Fusão Square Enix e o Futuro

A fusão entre Square e Enix foi um dos maiores marcos da indústria de games, criando uma gigante dos RPGs que viria a moldar o futuro do gênero. Com o sucesso de *Final Fantasy X* e sua sequência, a recém-formada Square Enix consolidou seu lugar como uma das desenvolvedoras mais influentes da indústria, equilibrando suas duas principais franquias, *Final Fantasy* e *Dragon Quest*.

so my version of the au did not originate in the sims, its sorta its own au of an au which you know already im just stating this for anyone else. There are also two different versions. theres the atb sims pilot that was never picked up, and then the atb sims reboot. Theyre like this because the pilot was on my shitty laptop, i didnt have as many mods nor cc, as well as packs either. the reboot is more beefed, its on my better pc, more mods/cc, a lot of the packs. Tobio hasnt even been born yet in my reboot save file and ive been playing it for 2 years i think. Im too lazy to update my game rn bc of the fact i have so much shit lol anyway time to talk abt each of them Pilot: this was way back in 2019 i think and it was honestly no substance other than i just wanted to play umataro and hiroshi and have them get married have a family. i dont have all the screenshots bc theyre on my laptop which is busted and not worth trying to turn on. but when tobio was born he had hiroshi's blonde hair and i decided to keep it, so the pilot is also known as blonde tobio au lol. tobio took on hobbies such as the violin, much like how his dad plays piano. atom and uran were eventually born too but my laptop was dying before they could have their birthdays (also my laptop DEFINITELY could not run any good, crisp graphics so everything looks gross and shitty) 1. hiroshi & tobio 2. i had tobio going thru a little bit of an emo phase, but i kept the blonde hair lol. i even built them this big ass awful house tht took forever (but i was proud of in the moment) but my laptop could BARELY run it, and then not long after my laptop started dying lol.

The Reboot: ah yes. better pc, better graphics, more mods, and cc this is finally the reboot. ive been playing this save file for multiple years now. its more fleshed out, more attention to detail. Motoko did make an appearance in the original pilot, but here she has more of story, I also spent time actually building lab 7, which is where the save file started. The reason I rebooted the atb sims is because I had gotten the university dlc which I thoguht Oh this is perfect bc it also adds robots so a106 made an appearance, and as i got more packs, i added more characters for instance I made tom when I got cats & dogs.

I have more of a story planned for the reboot, but specifically for tobio, I want him to grow up on a little bit of some farm, as I intend on hoshie to be good at gardening. Now my hoshie for my sims save is the OG once upon a time hoshie, not ATB hoshie. anyway tobio will grow up with chickens and I intend to have hiroshi be his godfather (to eventual step father) and like im excited to play more sims i just hate updating the game. my next goal for the save file is to update hiroshi's side of the family since the story has advanced but his family is. stagnant/still in the past. my idea for tobio is for him to still be a loner but to have more family. I also intend on having atom and uran be his younger half siblings (pretend theyre robots)

in my last play session i had motoko take her kids and her friends on a vacation. im tryinnnnnggggggg ot get hoshie and tenma to know each other more and am hoping after the vacation that i can push even further for tobio to finally make his way into the save

oh forgot!!! to mention1!! i also want reno in this save file buit i cant bring him in until tobio is born (hiroshi is gonna foster to adopt him)

Lab 7 Age Gap Au Headcanons

Been working on these for the past few nights and I think this batch is more organized then my last Headcanon post. I wanted to incorporate Jetter Mars in this Au but I'm holding out on that for now. SO they get their own post.

Hiroshi, Tobio and Tenma are done for now. Astro, Uran and Reno is on the back burned right now.

Hiroshi Ochanomizu Age: 25 Sexuality: Bi

Based off of: Mainly AtB, with a few dashes of '03 Ochan and Pluto!Ochan He and Mokoto share a lab near the junkyard. Hiroshi is not above digging for parts as he knows how wasteful people can be. Ran and Tobio pokes around there to help him and for their own projects. While he tries not to sleep in the lab, Hiroshi sometimes pulls an all-nighter and sleeps on a standing hammock when he is too tired to head home. Tenma tried it out once and decided to get one for his backyard rather than his lab as he just heads to his office and sleeps on a couch if need. Fix worker bots part-time (like Robita) while doing the internship. Once he's hired full-time as Tenma's assistant and Six starts entering international Robot fights, he stops.

Being a college student, he wears causal clothes like jeans and graphic shirts with his lab coat over it. He know how to dress business casual like when needed. Tenma helps him with getting a suit fitted.

Found Tom in the junkyard hurt as a tiny kitten but Ran takes care of him mainly. Tenma don't get along with Tom as he sometimes lays on paperwork/clothes or scratches/mark furniture, causing him to shout at him. Tom doesn't attack Tenma, just gives him attitude and walks away. Hiroshi's reactions range from amused or annoyed.

Tobio Tenma Stays with Tenma due to Metro City having excellent schools but keeps in contact with Hoshi. He and Tenma are somewhat distant because Tenma has a tendency to work overtime a lot. Once Hiroshi starts his internship at the ministry, Tenma's workload lightens up and he makes time for Tobio again. Hiroshi and Ran hit off pretty well with him, having similar interests. Hiroshi lets Tobio hang out at his lab on campus and his small studio apartment. He sometimes helps him with his homework and makes sure he goes to be on time when Tenma is busy. Tobio sees the Ochans as siblings he wished he had. Even when Hiroshi and Tenma marry, it takes him a long time to break that mindset. While Tenma lightly scolds him for being too formal with Hiroshi (Calling him by his first name etc.) Hiroshi doesn't push the issue and lets Tobio takes his time on the matter.

Umataro Tenma Age: late 40's/early 50's Sexuality: Bi

Based off of: Dr. Fusion (Go Go Astro Boy!) and the Last Mystery of the 21stcentury! Tenma with a few dashes '03!Tenma and Pluto!Tenma thrown in.

Prefers to keep his business and personal life separate but warms up to Hiroshi fast. His work with Six impressed Tenma, and he picked him as his lab assistant for a year-long internship and later full-time assistant. They work so well together people consider Hiroshi the second unofficial Minister of Science. Was hesitant to make a move on Hiroshi due to being busy with work and Hiroshi being the first guy he really fell for and thus not sure how to approach the situation. (Casual dating in college not withstanding) Rarely take vacations, days off are fine. He prefers to take the kids to educational places like the aquarium or the planetarium or just to the park, but is not above taking them to the arcades or amusement parks from time to time.

Only wears his Neo Victorian clothes when he's going out, doing interviews ect. He' wears business causal clothes, even at home. But Hiroshi and Tobio convince him to wear more causal clothes and he slowly does. Hoshi taught him how to play a few songs on Piano and he keeps the piano even after she leaves. He plays from time to time as a way to relax and think about the good times. Excellent singer but doesn't use it much, prefers to sing lowly to himself when he's alone in his room or office at home.

Hot take!

Tenma and Hoshi dated in college and agreed to Co-Parent after as they wanted (a) kid(s?) but also wanted to focus on their careers. (Yes they made Tobio the 'Fun Way') Metro City is a melting pot so this is somewhat common practice.

While not technically married, they agreed to raise him together, thus Co-parenting. However, Tenma going into workaholic mode when he get an good ideal or making progress with a project, so Hoshi ends up raising Tobio more so then they agree on.

Adding to that, Tenma wanted to move a bit closer to the ministry when he got promoted while Hoshi wanted to focus on her career as well. (They don't live in the same place).

They agree on Tobio staying with Tenma as the ministry is not too far from the school Tobio enrolled into and visits Hoshi for awhile during school breaks.

Today’s mix:

Club Mix 99 by St. Peter & Heaven 1999 House / Trance / Progressive Trance / Big Beat / Nu-Disco

This double-disc mix has a lot of pros and a lot of cons, so let's break them down, starting with the pros. First off, the selection on this thing is pretty great. When you have the backing of a major label like Universal to make a mix, you're not gonna run into much trouble getting access to the tracks that you want. And it's for mostly that reason that this mix is a good one. It has plenty of bangers: some bonafied, surface-level classics (I will never, ever tire of Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone"), some sweet remixes, and a bunch of tunes that should definitely be revisited again. Disc 1 consists of mostly house tracks and Disc 2 has lots of trance and progressive trance jams, and a common theme that seems to unite them both is an overarching feeling of warm bliss, with the second disc especially encouraging you to engage in some fancy-free fist pumpery. So if you wanna try to re-experience some of the sublime feelings of what the house and trance worlds were bopping to in the clubs in 1999 (or maybe experience 1999 for the first time), then this thing'll do the trick.

Now for the cons. As far as the mixing goes, it's really not great. Universal got a couple randos, a brother and sister duo who call themselves St. Peter & Heaven, to put this thing together. Looking at their Discogs profile, they'd done plenty of mixes before this one, but only for major labels, which leads me to believe that they just knew the right people and had never been awarded a major label mix assignment based on their skill or popularity among dance music fans.  As a result, the transitions tend to be weak, often sounding like your most basic crossfades, and placements of certain tracks are questionable at best. Another thing that Universal appears to have skimped on was the audio quality. With tracks like these, especially the epic and euphoric trance ones, you want stuff that's at a premium sonic quality in order to get a full, immersive experience; the type of sound that makes you feel like you're actually sitting in the decked-out studio that produced it. And the tunes on here don't come close to that standard. But if you're not much of an audiophile, it probably won't bother you that much.

So, in conclusion, while this is a pretty ample mix for its selection and the fact that it reflects well upon 1999, there's still probably better mixes out there that contain tracks of a similar caliber and are both sonically superior and have more authenticity.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 03/04/2021 (Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO”, Mimi Webb, Russ Millions & Tion Wayne)

So, we have a #1 debut, and that’s pretty much the only story here in the UK Top 75 as we get a filler week before Demi Lovato, Olivia Rodrigo and Lil Tjay run in and cause havoc. As for now, “Wellerman” is replaced at the top by Lil Nas X’s controversial “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)”, spending its first week at #1 after making pretty sudden gains assisted by the video and alternate versions – the mid-week projection had this at #15. Elsewhere, we just see the fall-out from Bieber. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.

Rundown

It’s a quiet week – only seven new entries, and none from Rod Wave, 24kGoldn or AJR as I had predicted. That doesn’t mean there isn’t some stuff to talk about within the chart, or particularly off of the chart, as we have a fair few drop-outs switching their places with returning entries. In particular, we have Justin Bieber’s “As I Am” featuring Khalid being swapped out for “Anyone” at #25, as well as drop-outs for “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence – slightly premature, I’d think – and all of Lana Del Rey’s songs from last week. We also “Anxious” by AJ Tracey, “Heat” by Paul Woodford and Amber Mark and “Toxic” by Digga D exit the chart, but the only real notable loss was “34+35” by Ariana Grande ending its 21-week run on the chart. Returning to the Top 75 in its place – which I cover – we have “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers of course at #73, as well as “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus at #72, “You’ve Done Enough” by Gorgon City and DRAMA at #70 (really hope this one becomes a hit) and “Don’t You Worry About Me” by Bad Boy Chiller Crew at #66. In terms of climbers and fallers, we do have some notable gains and losses. For songs travelling down the chart, we have “Patience” by KSI featuring YUNGBLUD and Polo G tanking a sharp drop in its third week to #18, “Streets” by Doja Cat shaking off the video gains at #22, “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo continuing to collapse at #27, another sharp drop for HVME’s remix of Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” down to #34 probably due to ACR, which was probably the fate for “Get Out My Head” by Shane Codd at #46. The same probably can’t be said for Drake’s losses, as “What’s Next” is at #40, “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” featuring Rick Ross is at #41 and “Wants and Needs” featuring Lil Baby stalls at #55. We also see falls for “Money Talks” by Fredo and Dave at #50, “Bringing it Back” by Digga D and AJ Tracey at #51, “Sweet Melody” by Little Mix on its way out at #57, “Headshot” by Lil Tjay featuring Polo G and Fivio Foreign down to #61 off the debut (although it’ll rebound thanks to the album as soon as the next week rolls around), “Ready” by Fredo featuring Summer Walker at #62, “You’re Mines Still” by Yung Bleu featuring Drake at #63 and “Day in the Life” by Central Cee at #69. Where it gets interesting are our gains, such as outside the top 40 with “What Other People Say” by Demi Lovato and Sam Fischer which could very well get even higher next week thanks to the album. We also have “Track Star” by Mooski at #53 off of the debut and a couple of tracks entering the top 40 for the first time, those being “Heartbreak Anniversary” by Giveon at #39 and Majestic’s remix of “Rasputin” by Boney M. at #38. Elsewhere in the top 40, we have “Let’s Go Home Together” by Ella Henderson and Tom Grennan at #13 and two songs marking their first week in the top 10, those being “Little Bit of Love” by Tom Grennan at #10, a song continuing to sour on me, and “Your Love (9PM)” by ATB, Topic and A7S, an EDM song at #8 that I initially mocked for its soulless repackaging but has honestly got me pretty hooked since. I’m excited to see how this one does. For now, however, let’s get on with our new arrivals.

NEW ARRIVALS

#64 – “Cloud 9” – Beach Bunny

Beach Bunny is a power pop band who last year released their album Honeymoon on Mom+Pop and it’s basically a modern r/indieheads staple in that it’s an accessible, airy pop-rock record fronted by a woman. It’s not anything unique, really, or different if you look further into it but that’s fine because there’s a lot of vaguely “indie” or music snob releases pushed out every year that miss the charts entirely. It’s a different story, however, when a year later, it gets viral on TikTok and streams its way onto the chart. In that case, we have “Cloud 9” by Beach Bunny, a pretty simple but sweet love song about a guy who just makes her feel a lot better about herself in times where she can’t pick herself up from the rut she’s in. Again, it’s a simple track but enhanced by the wonderful and unique vocal performance from front-woman Lili Trifilo and some pretty great production making sure no guitar lick is missed in this mix, especially in that chorus which is such an ethereal blend of the electric guitar dubs. I would argue that this actually should end at that second chorus even if it ends feeling abrupt as the transition to the final chorus feels a lot less cathartic than it does awkward, especially if the bridge is going to be a simplistic, quirky instrumental meander that doesn’t go far enough to be a guitar solo and hence feels kind of like a worthless addition. As is, this is a pretty great song still, just not the most fully realised once it loses that initial tight surf groove, though I’ll let it pass if we’re going to get rock this good on the charts again. I know this won’t really get more traction for Beach Bunny – or power pop for that matter – but more of this, please.

#52 – “You All Over Me” (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault) (Remix) (feat. DaBaby) (Part 2) (Radio Edit) – Taylor Swift featuring Maren Morris

Sadly, this does not feature DaBaby and is not the remix, radio edit or sequel to any previously released song. Jokes aside, I guess brackets are the next big comeback for pop music, which goes hand-in-hands with remixes and re-releases, hence why Taylor Swift is dusting off this leaked Fearless-era cut for a new recording with country singer Maren Morris, who you probably know from her contributions to Zedd’s “The Middle”. Now whilst Swift is a great songwriter, I do often find myself frustrated by how she treads common ground all too frequently without establishing much different with how a song is structured or how it emotionally connects. This is true not just lyrically but especially sonically as of recent, as despite being written in 2008, it has too much in common with the less interesting cuts off of folklore for me to really care that much. That’s especially if Taylor’s going to undercut the clean acoustic guitars with flourishes of harmonica and crow sound effects, showing some genuine intrigue here before refusing to let any of that develop past a couple stray melodies or notes further back in the mix. I’m trying really hard to be compelled by these re-recordings and re-releases of her back catalogue as I do consider myself a fan, but it’s tough to pay attention when any new compositions we get sound like folklore leftovers with Maren Morris only put to use as decoration, much like HAIM on “no body, no crime” – and we already got an album full of folklore leftovers. I’m not a fan of this, sorry – I can see the appeal, and I do think this has enough of a country tinge to it to make it at least somewhat interesting – but this goes in one ear and immediately out of the other.

#48 – “Tonight” – Ghost Killer Track featuring OBOY and D-Block Europe

Screw the formalities and screw the analysis because D-Block Europe are back to add another D-Block to their EU collection – and since they’re Londoners, their only – and that’s Paris, and contrary to the British nature, we’ve let French rap chart in the top 50 out of the fact that they collaborated with two of the most comical rappers in British history. They’ve also linked up with producer Ghost Killer Track, also from France, as this is ostensibly his song even if he intends not to prove himself with this dull piano-based beat and oddly-mastered bass and percussion, which are really just DBE staples. Unfortunately, past the initial comedy of that first line in the chorus, neither Young Adz or Dirtbike LB deliver any stupid lyrics or funny inflections, instead just resorting to being as boring as they can in their constant flexing as possible. I guess the French guy here, OBOY, commands a higher energy in his verse if only through his comical “no, no, no” ad-libs, but he’s the only French speaker in an otherwise basic British trap song that I just cannot see the appeal in when we’ve had song after song from these guys for three years now. This won’t be the last we see of cookie-cutter UK rap this week though so brace yourselves for that.

#47 – “Last Time” – Becky Hill

It’s almost as if the charts are trying to send me off to sleep as here we have Becky Hill, a singer hedging the line between a non-presence and mildly annoying, which is arguably more frustrating than downright infuriating as her slightly smokier voice does not sound bad, just lacking in texture in every way, especially if the multi-tracking is going to be this minimal on a royalty-free deep-house beat produced by Getty Images with a pretty worthless drop, a generic and simple melody of piano stabs for major chords, and a whole bunch of reverb on the vocal take... but it still ends up feeling dry as there’s nothing here to quench that thirst for a tighter, bass-heavy house banger or even a more ethereal, dreamy trance track, deciding to stick to a healthy medium of boring and utter garbage. Yes, that was a singular sentence. I’m not awake enough to form a cohesive sentence less than 40 words long, and this new Becky Hill track is just worsening that if anything. Speaking of...

#21 – “Body” – Russ Millions and Tion Wayne

Who’s Russ Millions? He’s Russ. No, not that Russ. British Russ – or Russ Splash, stylised as Russ splash on Spotify and nowhere else. This confusingly-named fellow appeared on the charts a couple times and possibly most famously with “Keisha & Becky”, a song also featuring Tion Wayne that is referenced on this very track. Sigh, I usually like Tion Wayne but even he can’t be bothered to delivery his usual brand of suave charm or sinister menace, instead opting for a more growling but ultimately completely monotone cadence that doesn’t flatter him or Russ, who one of my friends described as sounding like one of the aliens from Toy Story. This is a pretty by-the-numbers drill beat too, and it’s pretty safe to say that neither Russ or Tion Wayne here are going to bother with wordplay, even when they start pretty smoothly trading bars and Tion Wayne goes for a more unique chopper flow in the second verse. This is just not of any note. Once again, speaking of...

#17 – “Good Without” – Mimi Webb

I assumed Mimi Webb debuted this high because of a talent show she won or something because I’d never heard her name but instead, she just happened to have a major label deal before her unreleased song just happened to go viral on TikTok and just happened to be supported by one of the women who just happened to be the biggest creator on the platform. Yeah, and this song just happened to be garbage, suffering from every possible millennial pop trope and then some, from the mix dressed rather too overtly in reverb, the ugly guitar pluck, a generic indie-girl voice that you swear you’ve heard before in one of those dreadful piano covers of popular songs they use in adverts, as well as this ballad being undercut by badly-programmed trap percussion. I can tell this label is trying to create somewhat of an Olivia Rodrigo phenomenon from this and I for one am terrified of the Poundland knock-offs to come. Screw this.

#1 – “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” – Lil Nas X

At least Lil Nas X will bring some passion into this chart week? Well, not really, as when I hear this I recall that Pitchfork review of his EP, a much-maligned critique that featured the ever-so pretentious questioning if Lil Nas X really enjoyed making and listening to music. It reminds me because I think I now fully get it – at least when Lil Nas X was making slap-dash pop rock with Travis Barker or meme-worthy country rap with Billy Ray Cyrus for less than two minutes apiece, there was something invigorating in the execution or at least in concept. That 7 EP is still not a bad debut at all, but this new single “MONTERO”, a long-anticipated record that went from constantly-teased demo to Super Bowl commercial to Satanic-panicked videos of Lil Nas giving Satan a lap-dance to own the conservatives, has the same remote dreariness to it as “HOLIDAY” did late last year. The acoustic, Latin-flavoured guitar loop reminds me of his much better track “Rodeo” from that aforementioned EP that used its energy for similarly lighthearted subject matter but with some genuine energy, a Cardi B feature and a lot less subtle moombahton creeping in. With that said, I can’t say Lil Nas X didn’t try, as his vocal performance, whilst largely insufferable and strained, gives some energy to an otherwise aggravatingly stunted beat, and makes it a lot more infectious than it has any right to be. Content-wise, the song is essentially about a full circle where Lil Nas X becomes increasingly desperate for a man who starts off lonely and in a bad place, and the irony is that Lil Nas gets more explicitly sexual and crazed due to a combination of the LA life-style surrounding him and the fact that he’s simply, for lack of a better term, “down bad”, despite the fact that this guy doesn’t seem particularly desirable. Lil Nas knows this, though, and acknowledges it in the pre-chorus where he outright says that this guy is living the cocaine-addled celebrity life, but not living it right without Mr. Bullriding and Boobies in his life. I’m happy about the video and the outrage it seems to cause not just within conservative spaces but also amongst the hip-hop community, particularly Joyner Lucas, and I’m pretty happy with how out and proud Lil Nas X is about his sexuality, even if it leads to lines like “Shoot a child in your mouth while I’m ridin’”. I’m just really not a fan of this song past its content, which could really be interesting but falls flat with this plucking production that wastes time in barely two minutes with humming interludes. It’s not bad at all, just not for me.

Conclusion

And that concludes our week, and wow, what a bad week this was for new arrivals. Admittedly, it’s a filler week so only “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” will probably last – or at least we can hope as even if I don’t like the song, I still have to give out an Honourable Mention to someone, and it may as well be Lil Nas X trying to put the effort in. Best of the Week easily goes to Beach Bunny for “Cloud 9”, far and away the only good song here, with Worst of the Week also going out pretty easily to Mimi Webb’s “Good Without”, which is the type of soulless, unmemorable garbage that makes pop music look uninspired, and as a person who writes about the charts constantly, it’s a misconception I don’t want proven or revisited. Dishonourable Mention is a toss-up but I guess I’ll give it to Russ Millions and Tion Wayne for that sprinkle of drill disappointment that is “Body”, and that’ll be it for this week. I predict some impact from Demi Lovato, Lil Tjay and especially Olivia Rodrigo next week, but for now, here’s our top 10:

Background

My name is Nathan James Gordon Livingston i was born on October 3rd 1995 in Rutherglen and was brought up in the Schemes in the East End of Glasgow i lived in Castlemilk and West Whitlawburn up to the age of six. 

I moved to the Village of Carmyle when i was six and i have lived there ever since.

Carmyle is a place that i have always been very fond of from a young age my earliest memories took place there and it was where my mum and her four younger sisters grew up. 

I come from a large Catholic family I have my mum and stepdad, my younger sister, my grandparents, five aunties, two older cousins and four younger ones. I am the only one in the family who was brought up as Non Denominational and i consider myself as a very God fearing individual. 

I was diagnosed with Autism at the age of five.

I went to Bannerman High School which is in the Baillestion area of Glasgow i was a pupil there between 2007 and 2013. 

During my time at secondary school i acheved high grades in Woodwork and Art and Design, i really enjoyed woodwork and metalwork so i did a taster course in Construction crafts at City of Glasgow College during my third and fourth year and i had plans to leave school and do an apprentiship for City Building. 

On the other hand i loved painting and drawing in Art and Design i felt it was very enjoyable and relaxing subject in school.

The best grade i got was an A for my intermediate 2 Art exam in fourth year, i dont have any Highers. 

I left school in 2013 and i went on to study NQ Computer Arts and HND Computer Arts and Design at City of Glasgow College this was when i began to develop my intrest in Photography through studying modules which involved some form of Photography. 

My Gran also did Photography as a hobby in the years before she passed away, she loved Landcapes and Wildlife she loved taking family portraits and my Grandad even converted their loft into a mini photography studio and study area. 

Ive had nemerous part time jobs in between School and studying full time, i have worked in a sports centre and worked on and off with a run buisness. 

Interests

I love History, Architecture and Engineering, I love to look up things which are based on the history of working class paople of glasgow and its heavy industry that once was.

I like to look up information on notable scottish landmarks such as the famous Bridges.

I like to photograph landscapes and architecture in my spare time.

Many of you will know that i have a very broad taste in music i am very much a  fan of british music from the 80s and 90s, I like a lot of british rock bands such as Simple Minds, New Order and The Smiths to name but a few. 

A lot of these bands emerged working class areas within cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, London and Glasgow between in the 1970s starting off in the punk rock scene and as we moved into the 80s and 90s they developed into more modern rock/elctronic type bands and other sucessful bands such as Oasis and The Verve came onto the scene. For me its very enjoyable not just to hear their music but to also want to know a bit about how all those exciting bands came to be.

I also love Dance music from the 1990s my favourite dance genres are Techno, Acid House, Acid Techno, Progressive House and Trance.

Some of my favourite dance/eletronic artists are Underworld, Leftfield, Faithless, ATB and Paul Oakenfold. 

I dont play any instruments i just like listening to music.

I love watching serial killer documentries and gangster documentries particuarly the glasgow documentaries that are based on the likes of Paul Ferris and the Godfather Arthur Thompson Sr. 

I love to watch podcasts on reformed british Gangsters on YouTube.

My two favourite films are Trainspotting and Nil by Mouth which are two 1990s british cult films. 

I have been obsessed with british soaps from an early age i am a reagular viewer of the likes of Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks.

I have been a die hard Doctor Who fan since i was ten, i love the classic Doctor Who series as well as the Revived series. 

My favourite classic doctors are Tom Baker (Fourth Incarnation) and Peter Davison (Fifth Incarnation)

My favourite modern doctor is Christopher Eccleson (Ninth Incarnation)

I enjoy cycling in my spare time, it just takes me away from everybody and everything, i cycle along the river clyde and into the city centre, i like to cycle up to derelict places around the city as well.

I dont drive and i am not interested in taking up driving lessons anytime soon but i love classic british cars from the 70s and 80s and if i could drive right now my chosen vintage car would be a 1981 metallic gold Mk3 Ford Escort.

Black, Blue, Orange, White and Gray are my favourite colours.

A felvétel a jeles Babka Budapest felső szintjén készült, valamikor idén februárban, Tarr Dávid gitáros kellemes társaságában. A felvételről azt kell tudni hogy élő, és ami él, az a maga módján mindig tökéletes, de főleg a hibáival együtt. A dj béna, a gitár hangolódik, a zenész fárad, az este telik. Teljesen véletlenül ezt az estét sikerült viszonylag elfogadható minőségben felvenni, és ebben az órában még technikai problémák se voltak; ó a technika is él, pláne ha élők nyomkodják; ebbe más is belehalt már. Az ötlet nem más, mint farkaséhség. Elfojtott vágy. Az ötletes embernél nincs veszélyesebb a világon, mert hajlandó kockáztatni. Járt utat az ötleteidért fiam, el ne hagyd! Az az ötletem támadt, hogy játszunk kellemes jazzes hiphopot, és kevesebb mint egy óra után azon kapom magam, hogy Beethovent játszok dubsteppel. 

A borító egy művészetpedagógiai foglalkozáson készült, de művészet és pedagógia nélkül is mindig jó móka szavak nélkül beszélgetni.  Mint a legtöbb asszociációs játék, ehhez is legalább ketten jó ha vagytok; egyikőtök elkezd rajzolni valamit, ami eszébe jut, törekedve arra, hogy ne emelje fel a kezét, és az ő vonalát folytatja a másik, ugyanígy. És még Beatles sincs, hogy mentse a menthetőt. Szerencse, hogy a telefonomon rajta van már a MEGBÁNÁS alkalmazás. Megkérdezhetem tőle, hogy megbánjam-e, hogy ide jutottam. HOVA, kérdezi az app.  Oda, hogy egy tök hangulatos vendéglátói intézményben egy zseniálisan perverz gitárossal azon röhögünk, hogy a Magyar Népmeséknek ugyanaz a köre mint a Dallasnak, és emiatt elfelejtek Beatlest játszani. NE AGGÓDJ, HELYESEN DÖNTÖTTÉL, így az app. Egyébként mindig ezt mondja. A MEGBÁNÁSnak az a célja, hogy boldogabbá tegye a világot. A boldogtalanságot egyfelől a megbánás, másfelől a jövőtől való rettegés táplálja. Ahogy szaporodnak a lehetőségek, annál bonyolutabbá vált az élet. Az emberek az egyik világban élnek, de mellette létezik egymillió másik világ, amelyben élhetnének. Making future transport more climate friendly

The world’s transportation network is constantly growing. “Green asphalt” and sustainable bus transportation will ease the environmental impact of future transport routes.

The EU has greenlighted two major transport projects for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and SINTEF, Scandinavia’s largest independent research institution, in cooperation with Chinese and European universities. “Green asphalt” and sustainable bus transportation will help make future transport routes more climate friendly.

Norway’s largest current road project is the E39 Coastal Highway Route, which stretches from Kristiansand to Trondheim. The ongoing project will make the route ferry-free and shorten the driving time between locations along this route.

China’s giant investment in transport and infrastructure is referred to as the “New Silk Road” and extends transport routes across several continents. We will return to this in more detail later.

These major transport initiatives raise the question of how they will affect both the climate and the environment.

“It’s challenging to facilitate more transportation and reduce climate emissions simultaneously, but transport and trade are bound to increase in the future. What is important now is to make the transport systems as smart and climate-friendly as possible,” says Carl Christian Thodesen.

He has headed the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTNU for the past six years and has been central to the collaboration with Chinese research groups. He was also instrumental in developing two major EU projects that received the green light from the EU just before the summer.

“We recognize that the world’s infrastructure is growing extremely fast and that we have to think smart and be climate smart. The construction and transport sectors account for 40 percent of CO2 emissions and energy consumption today. We have to drastically lower this rate,” says Thodesen.

“Thinking sustainably also gives us a competitive edge. Climate-smart solutions will be prioritized and preferred in the future,” he says. Thodesen took a position as dean of the Oslo Metropolitan University this autumn.

Cooperation strong in transport sector

The collaboration between Chinese universities, NTNU and SINTEF began in 2017, and took a solid step further during a visit by Norwegian researchers and educators in April 2018.

We had long thought about doing something with China. What’s happening in China when it comes to transport and construction is enormous, and the universities have incredibly good lab facilities,” says Thodesen.

SINTEF Bygg and NTNU transport researchers have now established collaborative efforts with Chinese researchers at universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan.

They are working on issues such as:

The circular economy in the transport sector. For example, industrial waste materials are used for filling potholes in roads

Materials and road surface. How asphalt can be optimized to withstand wear and harsh climate conditions

Bridge structures, including floating bridges and fixed bridges

Tunnels, both through mountains and under water (fjords in Norway and rivers in China)

Driverless vehicles

Electricity transport

Rail transport

Through the eye of the EU needle

SMUrTS and HERMES are acronyms for the two EU projects for which NTNU and SINTEF have won EU research funding. They are being led by NTNU and SINTEF respectively, and are part of The Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas call.

Electrifying the transportation sector is an important step towards making transport more environmentally friendly. Several countries are starting to electrify buses in urban areas. In Norway, the largest cities have started the transition to e-buses.

The SMUrTS project aims to help authorities in different countries develop an approach to improving the electrification of public transport systems and making the transition from conventional buses to electric buses as smooth as possible.

SMUrTS stands for Sustainable Mixed Urban Transit System with electric and conventional buses.

Plenty of obstacles ahead

However, replacing conventional buses with electric buses is no quick fix. As of today, electric buses still face numerous challenges, including:

range limitations

loss of battery capacity

battery charge time

SMUrTS is working to find solutions for electric buses in extreme conditions, such as in the tough Nordic climate and in extremely large cities.

“In Norway, the cold climate is a challenge in terms of battery capacity. Tests on Tesla cars in the United States show that battery capacity is reduced by 40 percent in the winter,” says Chaoru Lu at NTNU. Lu is a postdoc at NTNU and was educated at Beijing Jiatong Universtity and Iowa State University. Lu and NTNU associate professor Trude Tørset are the SMUrTS project managers.

In megacities like Beijing, long distances are a challenge in terms of battery capacity.

“During this transitional period, until we overcome the limitations of e-buses, it’s more realistic to develop a city transportation system with a mix of conventional and electric buses. That way you can maintain the service standard of the transportation network,” says Lu.

Research needs to be useful for relevant actors

Since electric buses are relatively new, data collection and information is needed on how e-buses are working and how the transition from conventional buses to electric buses is going.

The researchers will be collecting a variety of data from the public transport company AtB in Trondheim, which this autumn inaugurated 36 electric buses in the transport network.

“Our goal with the research is to make a difference for the actors who are working on public transportation. This means that our research and our analyses need to provide useful information that ATB can use in transitioning to electric buses,” says Lu.

AtB finding research valuable

AtB, the transport company in Trøndelag County, where NTNU is located, thinks that the transition to electric buses has gone well so far.

“Clearly, challenges inevitably come up that you haven’t foreseen or planned for when undertaking something new. But we haven’t faced more challenges than you’d expect when making these kinds of changes,” says Tom Nørbech, division manager of technology and mobility services at AtB.

One challenge of switching over to electric buses, according to Nørbech, is that you no longer get your energy from filling stations but from charging stations, so you have to build a new and completely different type of infrastructure.

He thinks access to the SMUrTS analyses of what AtB does is important in this transition. The project is being conducted at “a high professional level, by people who are at the forefront of this type of research. It’s clear that both the analyses and access to the expertise of the collaborating partners are very valuable to us,” he says.

Models adapted to different cities and countries

This research project plans to collect data on environmental benefits, costs, efficiency, energy consumption on electric buses and on conventional buses, and the influence of the weather and climate on energy consumption.

“We’re looking at the big picture, and data from multiple fields gives us a bigger picture of how best to plan. Based on the data we collect, we’ll create models that we can customize for public transit companies to help solve their challenges,” says Lu.

The researchers also have access to data from Beijing, where large distances are a challenge in terms of battery capacity. For megacities like Beijing, the researchers are developing specific models based on the data and challenges that such cities have.

“We’re finding that the interest and need for electricity-based transport are strong around the world. Technology is evolving rapidly and transportation systems are changing really quickly. That’s why we need a new green transportation policy soon,” he says.

The research will run for three years and has a budget of almost NOK 9 million (€ 877,000). NTNU is leading the project, and the collaborating partners are from China, Sweden and Norway.

Green asphalt

HERMES is the second research project to come through the eye of the EU needle, led by SINTEF.

In Europe alone, more than 275 million tonnes of asphalt are produced each year for road maintenance and rehabilitation. This results in high resource consumption and the release of large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

“HERMES is developing a new methodology in order to reduce the climate impact of road maintenance and rehabilitation. The goal is to find and choose the best available technology and strategy with the lowest cost to the environment and society,” says Terje Kristiansen of SINTEF, who is leading the project.

To develop the new method, researchers will study and analyse infrastructure in selected locations in Norway, China and Austria. The project partners come from these three countries.

Analysing the life cycle of asphalt

HERMES aims to develop a practical method for grading “green asphalt,” based on the Principles of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).

LCA is a life cycle analysis method and a technique for mapping environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life: from raw material extraction through materials, production, use, maintenance and disposal or recycling. The method is used to analyse and assess what can then be done to reduce the environmental impact.

“The new method we’re developing will make it much easier to see how the different elements of road construction contribute to pollution from a life cycle perspective. This insight will enable us to gain a better understanding of the reduction potential by implementing various measures on the material, construction and operation sides,” says Kristensen.

Creating a climate account for asphalt and road maintenance will make it easier to see where environmental benefits can be obtained.

“Being able to have an impact on climate reductions in China will make a big difference worldwide,” Kristensen says.

EU and China

“China has a high level of expertise in technology and research and is a growth market. We’re seeing that China is increasingly important for the EU and that research cooperation between the EU and China is becoming more active. That is why it’s also important to build up our China expertise,” says Kristensen.

Such expertise is created through collaborative projects like HERMES and SMUrTS.

The research project has a budget of just over NOK 11 million (€ 1,117 263) and will also run for three years. The project emphasizes the exchange of personnel between the EU and Chinese partners.

The Silk Road—China’s major transportation project

The Silk Road has its origins many centuries back in time. This was the name for a number of trade routes that ran between Europe, China / Asia and the Middle East. The route network stretched across 6,000 km and derived its name from the lucrative trade in Chinese silk. The trade route was established during the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BC—220 AD).

In addition to trade, the Silk Road led to widespread cultural exchange between different countries and continents.

Business traveler and explorer Marco Polo from Venice contributed greatly to making the Silk Road and the East known to Europeans. In the 13th century, he embarked on a lengthy expedition to the Middle East, Mongolia and China with his father and uncle.

After about 20 years abroad, and bearing many experiences and new knowledge, they finally returned home. The East was mysterious and unfamiliar to Europeans at that time, and Marco Polo’s journey along the Silk Road became widely known through the travelogue Livre des merveilles du monde (Book of the marvels of the world, commonly called The Travels of Marco Polo in English), which became very popular.

The new Silk Road

European countries’ desire to trade directly with China was the main motivator for discovering a sea route to China. In the year 1480, Portuguese ships rounded the Horn of Africa for the first time. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom followed in the 17th century.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, China was regarded as the richest and most sophisticated of all civilizations on earth.

Trade and goods transport are also the main reason for China’s new giant transportation concept called “The New Silk Road.” It consists of several routes, on both land and water. The ambition is to create a continuous transport connection—by road, train and ship—between China and the rest of the world.

The project goes by the names One Belt, One Road (OBOR) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The transportation network will consist of:

a continuous transportation route across China from east to west

a tie-in to the original Silk Road route through Central Asia and the Middle East

a link to the Trans-Siberian transportation route through Russia and to the Baltic States

a water way via the Indian Ocean that strengthens the transport route from China to the coast of Africa, where China is starting to establish itself in a big way

a water route via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean countries and Europe

This is being called the world’s largest infrastructure project. China’s powerful leader Xi Jinping launched the worldwide project in 2013, and many steps have already happened since then.
