Here lay Ahmat Stuk on his noble home, May it be known that since in the field is this mark cut by my brother Travelers on Earth nor the stars in the sky cannot go astray 1192th year of the Lord in January
I really enjoy this stećak epitaph, I wanted to write a little note about it as I was dwelling on it.
The last line carries multiple implications. Since Ahmat's tomb is laid in this field, is it inherently given life, serving a purpose as a landmark in this world? Or is it a rudimentary, humane prayer, wishmaking, that the grave will command such tranquility and faith in human fragility to keep the living safe? It must be Ahmat's brother's love that has imbued the tomb with this property, as he was the one "making a wish''.
I'd also note a correlation between the vernacular bosnian church emphasizing the teachings and sacrifice of Jesus over any other aspects of Christianity and the core theme of redeeming humanity through death. This is the only stećak I know of placing the deceased in a parallel position. Not quite divine, but a rudimentary, hopeful notion of redemptive death.
As with many epitaphs, the simplicity and "generality" of the words leaves negative space, wherein the living reader can interpret and reflect upon themself. Do you understand?
#This is very academically contentious but if I am to mostly believe Muzics interpretation of the bosnian church#at the time of writing in the 12th century most quote unquote followers were pagans who accepted some christian ideas#only around a tenth being baptized#so a vernacular interpretation by a pagan of jesus saving humanity through his death as a replicable act like a bodhisattva? maybe.#mahayana-like interpretation of christianity <- little joke
