I was admittedly flummoxed by the announcement that the forthcoming Eldar update would round out the remaining Aspect Warriors and Phoenix Lords when that seemed like exactly the kind of specialist unit that you'd want to use to sell Kill Team sets, but sure enough that is exactly what Games Workshop is poised to do.

We've already seen the spicy elf so the rest of his boys aren't much of a surprise. All of these kits have been incredibly faithful to the 2nd Edition sculpts and that remains the case with all three of the Aspects revealed today.

Swooping Hawks have probably benefitted the most from their long delay as the production team learned how best to make "in-flight" poses work for miniature that are very much subject to the laws of gravity. I have already heard some early grousing that people don't like the Asuryani ruins they're posed atop, and to those people I say get good at basing – there is literally nothing stopping you from pinning them to the battlefield detritus of your choice.

Warp Spiders are probably the most changed of the lot, if only because the switch to plastic enables the model to more accurately represent what it was trying to depict in the first place. It does a fantastic job of unscrunching the tiny, hunchbacked pewter models that were limited by the realities of centrifugal casting molten lead.

And of course, Phoenix Lords including for the first time Lhykis the Whispering Web, Phoenix Lord of the Warp Spiders. This has been a hole in the Eldar range since the '90s, so hopefully they make her introduction interesting in the codex.

Asurmen, the Hand of Asuryan

Finished him up just in time for the end of the year! He is a unique converted model using the following parts:

- Elres Fireflash, a Space Elf Champion from the Rogue Trader days

- Dire Avenger head, specifically a metal one from the 3rd Edition days when you plonked them onto guardian defender bodies

- Idoneth Deepkin Morsarr Guard head, particularly the faceplate and ponytail (the crest is also in there, but acting as a skeleton and buried under green stuff)

- Dark Eldar Raider flag for the banner, also 3rd edition

- regular ol' Diresword from the current Exarch kit

- bespoke 3D-printed arm (holding the diresword)

Everything else is pretty much green stuff! That broken pillar on the base used to be part of a flying base, so it's transparent underneath the paint.

Kitbashed Asurman and Illic are ready to defend Craftworld Iyanden.

Didnt want to spend spend money on models old enough to drink, so I grabbed parts from spare Dire Avenger, Corsair and Howling Banshees to bring these powerful characters to the battlefield.

Took them to a game yesterday and had a blast trying them out.

Holy fucking shit the reveals for the Aeldari look AMAZING

New plastic models for Fire Dragons, Swooping Hawks, Dire Avengers and Warp Spiders - with the Warp Spiders getting their Phoenix Lord Lhykis revealed.

Asurmen, Baharroth and Fuegan (I mean, we knew about Fuegan but it counts) get plastic models.

They look so good. So colourful.

I thought i should show my kitbashed Asurmen model.

I used several aspect warrior kits to make the body, used a custodes skirt for the cape and I had remembered that his sword contained the soul of his brother so i fitted a sylvaneth model to the sword.

There actually is a creative benefit to having too many projects going on at once, but I'll come back to that. The contrast color Asurmen blue is a really rich and saturated blue, in fact it's too saturated and blots out all subtlety. The contrast paint Pylar Glacier is a really nice pale blue but goes on so thin as to be inconsequential. I've been trying to figure out how to use both of these contrasts effectively, and just diluting the dark blue with water causes it to break apart, now I know I need to use contrast medium to do the thinning, and multiple coats of the light blue never resulted in anything really useful. However, using the light blue to thin the dark blue gave me the color that I was actually after, which is the goofy psychic space squid on the left carrying all the equipment. The one on the right is a slightly diluted dark blue, like three to one, and the one on the left is more of a one to one dilution.

Having a lot of projects going at once can result in chaos, but in a chaos situation your mind will look harder for solutions to calm the chaos, thereby helping create creative solutions. So I always take on just a little bit more than I actually need to do to help get a little bit of chaos energy moving. Of course, having too many projects can result in a complete shutdown of the system as you become overwhelmed, so you need to find a little bit of balance to be effective.

I run a matriachal Craftworld so it seemed odd to have male Phoenix Lords rocking up on the battlefield. The conversions were pretty straight forward. Baharroth - banshee body and sword arm. Wayleaper wings and helmet. Autarch death spinner with a ranger rifle barrel. Asurmen - I saw a male version of this on Reddit. Autarch body, Dire Avenger arms and helmet. I had to do a little bit of conversion to create a "bloody twin" for the sword arm.
