Great take on the Hobbie Age discourse!!!
Honestly it should be like this instead of some moral posturing that strip off the agency and personalities of the characters and casually throwing out heavy-loaded words like a huge stick picked out from the ground and waving it around as if it couldnā€™t poke somebodyā€™s eye out and be an all around kill joy about it.
Ugh.
Not to mention thereā€™s multiple sources who have said Hobieā€™s 15 (Phil Lord), 19-20 (some of the animation crew), and his canonical comic age is 16-17. And apparently PunkFlower already has a cult following SINCE their comic era so thereā€™s that too.
On the other hand, I canā€™t help but laugh at the meta-comedic aspect of it all that of everyone, even his own creators, trying to put a label on a character who has claimed his dislike for said labels and doesnā€™t believe in consistency.
Da Powarh, Ser.

Meta-humor aside, I completely agree with your essay there. I think the age discourse happened not just because of shipping reasons but also for the fact that he looked ambiguously older but still have more prominent bonds with the teenage-Spiders that the Adultsā€” which should already be telling, cā€™mon.
But thereā€™s also the fact that harsh experiences ages a person. Grief, stress, and depression affects people physically and not just mentally. Like, just look at Miles-42 with his harsher facial lines and overall ā€œmatureā€ look compared to our Miles. Look at the world heā€™s living in, the grief that heā€™s surely carrying about his fatherā€™s death.
We describe him as a darker version of Miles but we did not uniformly conclude that heā€™s older than him, or that heā€™s a more troubled adult version of himself now, did we?
Apply that same logic to Hobie with his surely troubled background of young teen vigilantism and political activism and the effects it had on him over the years, and thatā€™s the chai honestly.
Thing is Hobie's age could add to the tragedy of his story because every spiderman story where the spiderhero is a teenager and has to risk their life to keep thousands or millions of people safe because of an incompetent safety system and capitalist greed is tragic. Why should a high schooler bear the responsibility of what hundreds of grown adults should be doing, and why does a high schooler need to be the one to clean up their messes and mistakes? And then that high schooler will have grown adults trying to kill them, entire police forces trying to arrest them, news media smearing their name, strangers always trying to take pictures or expose their identity, and always always always the uncertainty of family acceptance at the end of it all.
So with Hobie (bear in mind i don't know much about him) if he's really 16-17 in Across the Spiderverse, that means he's already been through a lot of the same shit that nearly every other spidey had to go through but at a younger age probably (and that Gwen was able to avoid and that Miles is trying to prevent). I didn't get the sense that he'd just come from a massive tragedy when we saw him in the movie. If he's had a police chief close to him die or be killed (by him maybe, idk) that's a lot for a kid to go through. Every other spidey offering advice to Miles was an adult. I'm not saying their Uncle Bens or Police Chief Scenarios weren't as bad, but they don't have the same freshness with it, you know? It's been years, maybe even decades.
Versus if he's on the older side, like 19 to 20, there's been more time to process, i think. More hindsight, more growth, which might give Hobie the best idea out of all of them of what Miles is about to go through because it hasn't been too long, but it's still fresh enough on his mind that he's got a semi-healed rawness that others might not (plus him being anti establishment/the "fuck canon" character would also make him want to help miles).

Why r Non-Indians so antsy about using 'Chai' as Pavitr's ship name
Like I get when ppl make chai his whole personality but it was a cute little joke, there's nothing inherently wrong with using it :/

Whose tongue would win in a battle for dominance: Din Djarinā€™s or that vampire guy from Spiderverseā€™s
I got this right as I was sitting down to start work, and then proceeded to have the busiest and shittiest day ever, but I kept thinking about this and trying not laugh out loud, so thanks for that šŸ„°
Also had all day to think of an answer and this was the best I could come up with

Curate Your Tumblr Experience, homies
Curating your dash is such an awesome and cool thing to do. Is there a ship or headcanon or topic of discourse you hate? You can filter it out!!!
I'm not sure if people know how, so for those who do please bear through the redundancy:
On your profile page, go the the gear in the upper right hand corner for settings. Tap Account Settings. Scroll down to Content You See.
From there, you will see a space for Filtered Tags. You can add all the tags of things you don't want showing up on the dash!
For example, I have h*rringrove as one of mine, same with anyone x reader/x fem reader/x you, etc, because I just don't like those kinda fics. If you don't want to see any bi mike/gay mike posts, melvin posts, trigger stuff, whatever, choose the tags you don't want to see!
The next level of this is just below it, Filtered Post Content. This will allow you to filter any posts that feature words or phrases you don't like in the text of the post.
For instance, before I saw Across the Spiderverse (so good!!! go see it!!!!), I didn't want anybody spoiling shit on my dash. So I filtered both tags and post content for astv, across the spider verse, across the spiderverse, etc.
You may have to type different variations to ensure everything is filtered out.
This isn't foolproof, but it's pretty damn effective most of the time and makes it so you don't have to necessarily block people or stop following the main tag. Hope this helps some people!!

But is astv on the same level of copaganda as b99, where do you draw the line
If I can be honest with youā€”really, sincerely honest with youā€”I care much more about How people are engaging with art than what art they are engaging with. I can try and get into the moralizing tango with you of what exactly makes something ethically okay to watch, but, truly, if someone is actively recognizing the qualities & ideologies of a piece of art, critically examining the impact of those qualities/ideologies, and making personal judgements on them based on their understanding, I am much happier than if people like everything I like and hate everything I hate. Critical discourse will always be more productive than labeling a piece of art as ā€œmorally irredeemableā€ or whatever.

hello hello!
my name is amber, but a lot of people call me mel, melan or melon. i'm fine with any of them. (bonus points if you can come up with something no one's called me before). i use she/they/he pronouns.
i'm a fanfiction writer and you can find me on ao3 under the same username.

Saw a tik tok earlier saying that margo x miles shippers are pro shippers bc op saw somewhere that margo is in college. And it annoys me bc
1) shipping discourse about astv is wild to me and
2) astv margo is clearly not college aged???
They might have seen them talking about margo in the comics but in astv... from her design and the way that she interacts with miles/her little backstory its clear that she's like... around miles' age.
Idk it reminds me of the discourse around hobies age and how they made it this huge deal. I personally think he's like 18 at the most but like whatever. We need to open the schools back up I think

A quick introduction to pin on my blog:
I created this blog dedicated to Miguel, my actual obsession. I did this mostly because I want all the posts related to him to be organized in one blog, and because there are post I'm too shy to share on my main blog.
Yes, I discovered Miguel thanks to the ASTV movie.
I'm getting into his comics because I want to know more about him.
I'm both into self-shipping and shipping him with other characters (especially holofang)
I'm not interested in any kind of pointless discourse or drama regarding to Miguel or the fandom, don't bring it here.
This will be polemic but: Althought I agree that mischaracterization is annoying, I believe that people can just enjoy his movie version and not reading the comics if they don't want to. I still support the comic fans to encourage new fans into reading it.
Expect suggestive/r18 stuff on this blog.
I want to make friends to talk about Miggy! Feel free to follow and talk with me.
Quick info about me: She/her pronouns, +20 years old, latinamerican. I speak spanish and basic english.
And last but most important: if you don't like what I post, I suggest you to block me. I am not interested in arguing and I will just block you instantly if you try to start something.
