AAAHHHH okay I’ve finally finished reading the Sherlock Holmes collection. It wasn’t in the right order (my bookset didn’t order them correctly and I didn’t think to check) so the last case I read was The Valley of Fear which was very good.
To avoid my mistake, if you’re planning to read Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books, read them in release order. This is the order I think it is: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,The Hounds of the Baskerville, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, His Last Bow. But, every single website I’ve looked on has got a different order. However, definitely read A Study in Scarlet first, The Return of Sherlock Holmes after The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and His Last Bow last. Sorry I’m not very accurate, I don’t know why it’s so difficult. I will try to find a less confusing list. (Also, I am really not sure about The Valley of Fear)
I was thinking about writing which ACD cases correspond to the BBC Sherlock episodes, if anyone would be interested. However, this will take me a while, so I won’t be able to post one anytime soon.

“Oh, hell! What does that matter?! So we go around the sun! If we went around the moon or round and round the garden like a teddy bear, it wouldn’t make any difference! All that matters to me is the work! Without that, my brain rots. Put that in your blog — or better still, stop inflicting your opinions on the world!”

Do you remember what Darwin says about music? He claims that the power of producing and appreciating it existed among the human race long before the power of speech was arrived at. Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it.

A Study in Scarlet - Part 1: Chapter 1 - Mr. Sherlock Holmes
Before Reading
Context: In November 1887, A Study in Scarlet was published in “Beeton’s Christmas Annual.” It was the beginning, or at least one of them. And, like A New Hope, the story wasn’t meant to continue. He likely based his characters on one of his professors: Joseph Bell, and himself.
Happy 164th Birthday to Sherlock Holmes! While STUD was first published in 1887, it’s generally accepted that Holmes was born in 1856, based on him being a man of about 60 in LAST. Chris Morley assumed that Twelfth Night is his favorite Shakespeare play for a reason (title refers to 12 days after Christmas on Three Kings Day/The Epiphany). Each year, the BSI holds their annual meeting, The BSI Birthday Weekend, in New York City near this date. Supposedly, they bring the worst weather.
Context: Its 1881: the Oriental Telephone Company is formed, Hebrew is back from the dead, and Pablo Picasso is born. Lightbulbs are just starting to be widely used. The Boer War has ended. Women are wearing s-curve corsets and bustles (nearly all of the shape of the silhouette comes from padding, not tight lacing. Good rule of thumb: if it’s for daily use, it’s not difficult or uncomfortable).
After Reading
In this chapter, Watson met Holmes for the first time in the hospital laboratory. Holmes’ first words to him were “How are you?” not “You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.”
There he was testing a new method of detecting small amounts of blood, “an infallible test for blood stains”. Today, in forensic science, they use the Kastle-Meyer test, though it’s presumptive not infallible. “This is a catalytic test that detects the heme group in blood that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide. It is a two step reaction where one drop of phenolphthalein reagent is added to the suspected blood sample, followed by a drop of hydrogen peroxide. A positive result induces a color change to pink.” (Wikipedia)
Hands are very telling, not just to Holmes, but to the readers. It’s said that your hands show your true age. They can also show your occupations and class. Calluses will cover the hand of a working person, while people who have never had to lift a finger will have smooth and clean hands. The Victorians had gloves to protect their hands from the sun and dirt.
To discuss: Were the two of them depressed before meeting? Consider Watson’s ongoing descriptions and the passage where they’re telling each other “the worst of one another before they begin to live together.”
Dates: Before November 1878 - Watson graduates with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of London. After November 1878 - Watson joins the Second Afghan War. July 27, 1880 - Watson was shot in the shoulder in the battle of Maiwand. Months later - Watson recovers. 1 month later - Watson arrives in Portsmouth. Less than 9 months later - Watson moves to a hotel in the Strand in London, reunites with Stamford, meets Holmes.

"Una vez que descartas lo imposible, lo que queda es la verdad por improbable que parezca" Con este método aparentemente tan sencillo como eficaz, Sherlock Holmes, el detective más famoso de la historia de la literatura, armado con su pipa y acompañado de su inseparable Dr. Watson, se enfrenta a los más insólitos misterios. Sherlock Holmes- his limits
In A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes book that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, there is a conversation between John Watson and Sherlock about Sherlock’s knowledge. Sherlock tells him that he only has knowledge about things important to him, which surprises Watson. I’ve written out the extract below.
For context, in the chapter The Science of Deduction, Watson is telling Sherlock about the Solar system. Before this, Watson says ‘His ignorance was as remarkable as his knowledge’, which is very fitting.
[John Watson’s perspective]
“You appear to be astonished,” he said, smiling at my expression of surprise. “Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it.”
“To forget it!”
“You see,” he explained, “I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.”
“But the Solar System!” I protested.
“What the deuce is it to me?” he interrupted impatiently; “you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.”
After this, Watson creates a list titled ‘Sherlock Holmes- his limits’, stating Sherlock’s knowledge. For example, His knowledge of literature- nil (none).
In the BBC series, Sherlock, series 1 episode 3, Sherlock and John have a very similar exchange. But in the series, Sherlock is probably more harsh about it.
(After reading the books, I love seeing the parallels between the TV show and the original.)

Hey. So. The reading slump is real, and I don’t like it one bit. And I don’t have any “easy” books on my shelves to cure it. And I don’t want to give in to a classic that I’ve been wanting to read for a long time, because I’m scared I’ll get bored and that would mean another abandoned book on the “currently reading” pile. So I started A Study in Scarlet on my e-reader, because I’ve been loving watching the BBC Sherlock again, and I am in such a crime book/movie/tv series mood that I figured why the hell not 🤷🏼‍♀️ How’s your reading been going? Let me know! 😊 #books #bookstagram #bookalicious #sherlock #astudyinscarlet #arthurconandoyle #bookpic #classicscommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CEPNewhggdJ/?igshid=867zs5ol626g
