I thought this was going to be more UFOs and aliens, but it was actually just a history lesson of the Maya. It was pretty interesting, and it went a lot into their stone carvings, trying to decipher them, see if their gods really were aliens, or just from Asia or some such.

Kʼinich Janaab Pakal “Great Sun Shield” Talon Abraxas
Kʼinich Janaab Pakal means “Great Sun Shield” in classical Maya. Here we are reminded of Psalm 84:11 “the Lord God is a sun and a shield” which is really a reference to the Reuleaux triangle and its emergence from the triquetra. Pakal expanded Palenque’s power in the Maya states and initiated a building program that produced some of Maya civilisation’s finest art and architecture. One of the most enduring and enigmatic relics from this great leader was the lid of his sarcophagus: Pakal being reborn into eternal life.

I have a Roo thought for you 😅😅😆
Imagine the Roo's dressing up as the Lion King's Hyena trio for Halloween XD Rena is obviously Shenzi and she & King (as Banzai) get totally into it; are making dumb jokes and cackling all night, while Ryan's Ed is just completely uncharacteristically silent and scowly, drinking whiskey or something XD
What Disney henchmen/or/sidekicks do you think your WFRR OC's might dress up as for Halloween? XD
Tumblr media
(*cough* Lottie would turn up as full-on Scar.)
I need you to know that I literally squealed when I saw this notification. ROO THOUGHTS!!!
Oh my god XDDD yes. I love this. This is probably the one time King actually chose to get specially dressed up for the night XD I need Ryan being all grumpy in his hyena outfit watching his sister and in-law make fools of himself XD (if Maya was still around, she could have been Zazu? Or one of the background hyenas so Ryan won't be alone ^^ XD) And Lottie showing up as Scar is PERFECT!
Ohhh which sidekicks my OC's would dress up as?? Hm...
Ben: Doesn't dress up for Halloween in general, so I can't see him making an exception here. He's such a spoil sport (though, I do imagine him dressing up as The King of Hearts, even if he's not exactly a sidekick).
Henry: oh Henry would absolutely dress up as Honest John or Br'er Fox. C'mon, it's right there!!! He can laugh about the irony XD I can also see him pulling off Sir Hiss' outfit (even though it's just a hat and cloak XD), possibly the Sheriff of Nottinham? Might be too flashy for him though 🤔 (how would Rena react to Henry dressed up so handsomely like John or the Sheriff? 😏)
Moony: I can also see him wearing the Sheriff' royal garb- except he'd bring more muscle to the look XD KRONK!!! He could pull off a Kronk costume!! He's got a similar build to the guy anyway. Ohh he could be one of Captain Hook's pirates, too! Or maybe Scroop. It'd be easy, that alien only wears a cap and a vest. Moony can do that~ 😏
Poppy: I can actually totally see her dressing up as LeFou- either version. She'd look cute in the little French man's suit, I bet ^^ she could also pull off a Sir Hiss look, too! And with how small she is, it could look like those adorable designs of tiny characters with big and wide cloaks!! 🥹 ohh maybe she and Shiny can dress up as Anastasia and Drizella?
Shiny: Ok technically Pixar isn't the same as Disney, but Shiny would pull off Ken's outfits, with Barbie's spunk! It doesn't help that I've imagined her interrogating/torturing Greasy the same way Barbie does Ken XDD (also Shiny would be caught wearing her heels through her disguise, even if it's an astronaut suit XD). She also has soooo many burlesque outfits with feathers and fur; she can put her own spin on the animal sidekicks, such as Diablo or the Cheshire Cat (I am terrified of the prospect of a sexy Iago costume 😭)
Terry: Jasper and Horace. But they're so close enough to his style, everyone assumes he's just dressed as normal XD bro has to explain his own costume 🥲
If the weasels can count; Shiny is absolutely putting her own spin on Greasys suit (an open buttoned blouse instead of a pink tie, for one 😏), Moony can be Stu, he's the only one who can wear the shirt and carry the bat comfortably XD Henry called dibs on Smartass' suit, so Poppy wears Psycho's straightjacket (it looks comfy so she'd be happy either way. But I also think she could pull off SA's suit). Terry can be Wheezy, and Ben can be one of the deleted weasels XD
Thank you for asking! This was fun to think about!! ^^

Although traditional science believes this to be simply absurd, a great deal of evidence has been found worldwide that supports the ancient alien theory. Perhaps the most critical connection between the emergence of civilization and alien beings can be found in the very history of humanity, hidden in ancient manuscripts and clay tablets that have survived for thousands of years.
Tumblr media
Traditional scholars believe that not everything written on the Sumerian Kings List is accurate. They often claim that the Sumerian Kings list is a mix of prehistoric and mythological accounts, which speak of gods who ruled the Earth, enjoying absurdly long reigns. But suppose we travel half a world, from ancient Mesopotamia to the Americas. In that case, we will discover how the sacred book of the old Maya, Popol Vuh, describes the beings who created humanity.
The creators of our race in Popol Vuh are referred to in the texts as:
 The Creator
The Ancients
The First
The Dominator
Those Who Created
Those Who Gave Life
Those Who Hovered Over Water Like Light Aurora
Although these ancient texts, mentioned above, are extraordinary, perhaps even more so are the countless artifacts that have been found scattered across the globe, representing beings frighteningly similar to modern astronauts. And while speaking of astronauts, Al Worden (February 7, 1932 – March 18, 2020), former astronaut and member of the Apollo 15 mission, had something fascinating to say about alien life while speaking with Good Morning Britain.
Al Worden was an American astronaut and engineer who was the pilot of the Endeavor Command Module during the Apollo 15 Lunar Mission in 1971. He is one of 24 people who went to the Moon between 1969 and 1972. The ex-astronaut is also listed in the Guinness book of world records as “the most isolated human being,” after spending six days alone orbiting the Moon, completing 75 laps around him.
While speaking to Good Morning Britain, Al Worden was asked if he believed the aliens were real, and his response surprised everyone who watched the interview. The former Apollo 15 member said that the aliens are accurate and came to Earth in the distant past and created our civilization. If we want to look for evidence, we have to look at ancient Sumerian literature.
“We are the aliens, but we think that they are other people. But we were the ones who came from somewhere else because someone had to survive, and they got into their little spaceships and came over here and landed, and then started civilization here. And if you don’t believe me, get books on the ancient Sumerians and see what they have to say. They will explain it to you right away.”

MARS
“On a world far, far, far away (or strangely close to home but in a different era) a lone astronaut and their robot side kick have set off as missionaries and landed to begin new adventures in a strange new environment (they hope). Your task is to utilise the random ingredients to create a spacecraft or ship in a Maya trial, an alien creature developed from an insect or arachnid (or is it to be a GOD?), a little robot (using the base shape as a starting point) and an illustration or set of illustrations (these can be 2D or 3D) that tell a story of wonder, a terrifying god or a lost bit of history.”
Tumblr media
For this project we received three different words, a God, an insect and a shape. The task was to utilise these to create a concept based on them. It had to be related to a spaceship and aliens- dhfghdofgh

Wie is God? Een onderzoek naar de oorsprong van religie.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
De Maya’s waren bijzonder ontwikkeld. Bijvoorbeeld hun kalender was erg indrukwekkend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Antikythera is 2000 jaar oud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elektriciteit is toch pas veel later uitgevonden?
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Hello!
There have been a few versions of fics where a happily married Ethan/MC learn that Ethan has a long-lost child that he was unaware of. To make matters worse, before they were wed, he told MC he didn't want children, so she agreed to this (begrudgingly).
Let's flip...
What would happen if your Ethan learned that your MC had a child which was put up for adoption before they met, and she never told him? Given his own abandonment issues, how would this impact his feelings toward MC and their relationship going forward?
(Don't blame me; someone hoisted this on me last night, and now I need to know other writers' answers! lol Oh, and if I sent this twice, forgive me, it's 2:28 AM and my dumb ass should be in bed.) :)
Oh my god, how could you dump something so angsty on me. I literally just woke up, bestie 😩
Tumblr media
Okayyyyyy let’s go. I might turn this into a fic, with better grammar later on.
Naomi gets pregnant at 17. Despite always using protection, she and her boyfriend, Steven are still that 1% of people who get pregnant while taking all precautions.
Financially, Naomi knows she’d be fine. But emotionally/mentally/physically? She knows without a doubt that she would be a horrible mother at 17 years old. She doesn’t want to subject a kid to her selfishness and unwillingness to sacrifice her goals.
Naomi’s already committed to Johns Hopkins, and her boyfriend is leaving the east coast and going to California for college. Neither one of them wants to put any of their plans on hold, so they know early on that Naomi isn’t keeping the baby. Thankfully their parents support the decision 1000000% and do not try to talk them out of it.
They’re quickly connected to a couple, Sheila and Franklin Foster. They live in Arlington, Sheila is a 5th teacher, Franklin works for The Pentagon. They’ve been trying to conceive a baby for 6 years with no luck, and instantly, Naomi knows she’s meant to help them.
After she gives birth to a healthy baby boy, Naomi insists that he’s immediately handed to Sheila so she can experience mommy and son bonding. For a split second, the urge to hold him and never let him go crossed her mind, but she knew that wouldn’t work for anyone.
After two days in the hospital, Naomi is discharged.
She cries. She cries a lot. She takes 3 weeks off from school. Her mom finds a support group for her to join, and that’s that. She graduated high school at the top of her class and went on to college, and the rest is history.
Ethan finds out when they get engaged and on a fluke. One night, he stumbles across a box of momentos in Naomi’s closet, tipped over, the contents spilled out. Out comes an ultrasound and the first thing he notices is the date. It’s dated for 12 years ago. When confronted, Naomi confesses that she was pregnant as a teen and gave the baby up.
Ethan is shocked to hear this, but he listens to her nonetheless. How could she keep something like this from him? Something so huge.
“It’s not like I have a kid out there that I’m not raising or abandoned at my parents house,” Naomi says, and it kills whatever rebuttal Ethan was going to throw at her regarding his own parentage. “I didn’t let them grow attached to me and then leave them. I was a kid myself, I knew I wasn’t in the right space to bring a baby into this world and properly care for them. I’m not a mom. Sheila is his mom. I’m just someone who had the opportunity to help a very deserving couple.”
“I get a picture and a birthday card every year from his parents,” Naomi says, absentmindedly pointing to their bedroom closet. Ethan surmises that’s where she keeps them. “His name is Isaac, he’s 11 years old. The family live in Virginia, and Isaac is great at science and loves football. He wants to be an astronaut football player, and he has a 5 year old sister named Maya who wants to be a princess.” She laughs. “And knowing that, knowing that he’s loved and cared for, and his hobbies and interests are being nurtured, and he’s surrounded by such a great family is more than enough for me. I know Steven and I made the right choice, and I don’t have a single regret.”
“Does he know he’s adopted?”
“Yes. He’s sent me a few pictures before. He said I’m a cool lady who helped him find his mommy and daddy.”
“Would you ever want to meet him?” Ethan asks gently. “If he reached out, what would you say?”
“I would love meet him,” Naomi replies. “After he’s 18 and an adult, of course, I don’t want to overstep.”
“I’m sorry I never told you,” Naomi continues, sniffling. She doesn’t know why she’s crying right now. She’s not even sad. “It’s not something I’m ashamed of at all, so I shouldn’t have kept it a secret.”
“I’m sorry for jumping down your throat,” Ethan tells her, all of his righteous indignation completely gone from his body. “That wasn’t fair, especially since I didn’t have all the facts.”
“I know you said you wanted to be selfish and continue living your life, but I think you are one of the strongest and most selfless people I know. Selfish would’ve been keeping him despite knowing you weren’t in any position to do so. You decided to give Isaac a life that he deserved and putting someone else’s life and well-being above your own is the the most loving thing you could do.” Ethan sighs and wipes away one of Naomi’s tears. He hates seeing her cry. “I got caught up in my head and wanted to compare you to my mother, and I know you’re nothing like her, not at all. I’m sorry for even attempting the comparison.
“Apology accepted.”
The two of them settle onto Naomi’s bed, neither of them wanting to pack anymore, exhausted by the turn of events.
“Hey, Naomi?”
“Yes.”
“For what it’s worth, I know for a fact you’ll make an excellent mom one day.”

One June Global Studios changes their social media profile picture to. Idk a rainbow mr monkey or something and most people are like "yeah ok superficial pride month stuff I guess" and then it hits July and it just. Doesn't change back. People assume they forgot but it's on all the accounts and they're still posting regularly. Finally a week in someone asks and the response is just "I'm the social media manager and I'm gay. Also everyone else is cool with it. -Cody"

Not to be an ace attorney fan or anything but Ive been watching murder mystery shows and it makes me appreciate mystery video games more. Video games are genuinely one of the best mediums for a classic whodunnit and its a shame that we dont get more of them. Let me explain.
In a video game, you are active in the story. You have to follow the logic of the mystery. You have to know what's going on. What the player character knows, you know, so you can't just have a talk offscreen and come into the big reveal with a new fact no one had ever heard.
Now, I've been watching a lot of Elementary lately. It's pretty good, I enjoy it, but inherently, Sherlock knows things that the viewer does not. The camera can cut away from him while he's questioning someone. He has knowledge of the in-show universe that we do not, but sometimes that knowledge gets brought up too late. We can't follow the process, so we just have to trust that what he's saying is true and right. Like, they'll introduce some random guy we haven't heard of or met most of the way through an episode and then say "This is a famous serial killer and the crime fits his MO perfectly" and we just kinda have to go with it.
Meanwhile, with Ace Attorney, you see everything Phoenix or Apollo or anyone sees. If there was a thing that happened that's relevant to the case, it will either be internally monologued about, explained aloud to someone else, or told to you directly. You Know what the character knows (with a few notable exceptions like whatever the fuck was going on in DD but thats mostly because of the timeline, how Phoenix knows Edgeworth in game 1 before the class trial explanation in 1-3, Nahyuta and Apollo being siblings, etc). Anything you DONT know that the character knows is irrelevant to the case. There can be twists, but they're things that turn your preconceived notions about a case around, not just grabbing some random guy in the last 5 minutes and saying "it was him!"
Im just having some thoughts

They really made Apollo’s best friend an astronaut and they were so right to do it. IDK the direct translation of his Japanese name but at least in english we’ve got the Apollo space missions AND the fact that Apollo is the God of the sun. It feels obvious

Mini Fanfic #394: Big Sis Maya (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney)
Maya: (Happily Walk Alongside Apollo) Soooo you're ready to spend some quality time with your Big Sis Maya, Polly?
Apollo: (Rolled His Eyes) Do you always have to call yourself that?
Maya: Well, I'm four years older than you....(Smirks Teasingly) So yes. I have.
Apollo: Figures....I think I'm starting to see where Trucy gets her sass from....
Maya: Just be lucky I call myself that instead of "Your Senior".
Apollo: (Thought Long and Hard about That Wording....Only to Shutters on the thought) ....God, that would sound weird to hear you say that....
Maya: Right? I am wayyyyyy to young to be labeled as a Senior.
Apollo: (Gives Maya the "Really?" Look) You....do realize a Senior doesn't only means being old, right?
Maya: ('Scoffs') Of course I do, Polly. Who do you take me as?
Apollo: Mr. Wright's Former Assistant?
Maya: Uh correction: I'm Nick's First Lady Assistant/BBF, A Spirit Medium....Still in Training, Trucy's Mommy, Pearly's Favorite Cousin in the World, annnnnnnd....(Hugs Apollo's Arm) you and 'Thena's Proud Big Sis~
Apollo: (Rolled his Eyes While Smirking a Little) I'm..... somewhat honored.
Maya: Not the response I was expecting, but I'll let it be for now~ (Giggles Softly)
...................................................................
1:00pm at a Burger Joint.....
Maya: (Munching and Enjoying the Cheeseburger she Ordered)
Apollo: (Chuckles Lightly at the Spirit Medium) You really like burgers that much, huh?
Maya: Mmmhmm! They're sooooooo goooood!
Apollo: At least try and finish your mouthful before speaking?
Maya: Oh! (Swallows her Food Before Smiling and Blushing) Sorry.
???: Herr Forehead! Yoohoo!
Apollo: (Turns to see Ema, Klavier, and Wocky making their way to his and Maya's Table) Hey. You guys made it.
Wocky: (Smirks Cocky) Like we missed a day of lunchtime.
Ema: (Shrugged) Or anything involving breaks....
Klavier: (Noticed Maya Sitting Next to Apollo) And who might this lady sitting next you, my good friend?
Maya: (Turns to Apollo) Yeah, Polly. Who's your friends?
Apollo: (Turns to Three of his Friends) Guys, I like to introduce to Mr. Wright's former-
Maya: (Bump Apollo's Shoulder with Hers)
Apollo: ('Sigh') - I mean.....(Rolled his Eyes) Mr. Wright's Number One Assistant from way back and Spirit Medium, Maya Fey. (Turns to Maya) Maya, this is Klavier, Ema, and Wocky. My Acquaintances.
Ema: (Starts Smirking) And a few of his actual friends besides his boss, his little sister Magician, and a Fireball for his Girlfriend.
Apollo: Athena's not a Fireball, Ema...
Ema: (Shrugged) Could've fooled me.
Maya: (Smiles Brightly) Nice to meet you guys. Mind telling me what you all do besides being Polly's friends?
Klavier: (Smirks Proudly) Well, I, for one, am a Prosecutor by day and Rockstar by Night. As well as being Herr Forehead's only rival, of course. (Winks at Apollo)
Apollo: (Gives Klavier an Unconvinced Look) (Says no one.....)
Ema: I'm just a Simple, Proud Scientist.
Klavier: (Raised an Eyebrow at his Girlfriend to tell the truth) Ema.....
Ema: ('Sigh in Defeat') Fiiiiine.... I'm also a detective in training or whatever.....
Klavier: (Smiles Brightly) And the girlfriend of mine whom I'm proud of very much~ (Gives Ema a Kiss on the Cheek)
Ema: (Starts Blushing and Looking the Other Way) S-Stupid Fop........
Maya: Awww~ That's sweet~ (Turns to Wocky) And what about you, Wocky?
Wocky: I'm a son of a family of gangsters.
Maya: (Eyes Widened) Wait What?
Apollo: (Facepalms while Sighing) They're former gangsters, Maya. They have a Muffin Business now.
Wocky: (Smiles Prouder) Damn right. I wanted the Business to be called the "O.G. Crackers" but my old man insisted on calling it "O.G. Muffins" instead. It's a weak name, but at least the place is booming with profits.
Klavier: (Smirks Playfully) If you couldn't tell by now, our Friend Herr Wocky here is the "Little Brother" of our little group.
Wocky: (Glares at Klavier) Says who?!
Ema: Says us. You're clearly younger than out of all of us in this table.
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) Plus, you're so easy to make fun of.
Wocky: Like Hell I am!!
Apollo: (Rolled his Eyes) Really starting to prove his point right now....
Wocky: (Glares at Apollo) You wanna take this outside, Justice?!
Maya: (Giggles Softly at the Scene) I'm glad our Polly made some friends besides us of course.
Ema: (Chuckles Lightly) Yeah... Apollo's maybe a Dork, but he's our Dork.
Apollo: (Gives Ema the Look)
Ema: (Smirks at Apollo) Hey, you're not the only one in our group who's easy to make fun of.
Klavier: (Shrugged with a Smile) It's the truth.
Wocky: Ha!
................................................
1:30pm Outside of the Burger Joint......
Maya: (Happily Walking Next to Apollo) Your friends seems pretty fun to be with.
Apollo: They're unbearable to be around, but I loved them all the same. (Smiles a Little) I'm glad you liked them.
Maya: Me too. You guys kinda remind me of me and Nick's Group of Friends from back in the day.
Apollo: Were they also as crazy as ours?
Maya: Nah.....(Smirks Playfully) They're a lot worse.
............................................
1:35 p.m. at the Park's Bench.....
Apollo: Hey, Maya?
Maya: Hm?
Apollo: You said your sister was Mr. Wright's Mentor, right? What was she like?
Maya: (Smiles Brightly) She was only the Best Lawyer/Big Sister in the World! You'll love her, Polly. She was THAT amazing at what she do.........(Sighs Before Frowning Sadly) I missed her so much....
Apollo: (Frowns As Well) Mr. Wright told me what happened to her once I joined the agency.... I'm so sorry for your loss.
Maya: Thanks......On the bright side, at least she's in the better place now, right?.....
Apollo: Yeah......('Sigh') You know, I lost someone who was precious to me too.....
Maya: Really? Who?
Apollo: My best friend, Clay. He was an astronaut......(Looks Down on the group) Until he was murdered that day.....
Maya: ('Gasps') Oh my gosh.... Apollo, I'm so sorry.
Apollo: It's fine. Athena and I was able to find his murderer together and put him to justice afterwards.....so there's that at least.....('Sigh') Doesn't change the fact the I missed him though....
Maya: (Gently Grab Apollo's hand) Hey. I know it's sad to miss the ones you love, but it's what I said about sis, your friend is in a better place now. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to be all sad about his passing all day, right?
Apollo: Yeah.....(Chuckles Lightly) He would probably start lecturing me on being sad and moody as we speak. And on a brighter note, I have you, Athena, Truce, Pearls, Mr. Wright, and all of the other people in my life. So I'm not entirely alone.
Maya: (Happily Hugs Apollo) That's right! Life can be pretty hectic and cruel sometimes, but as long as we still have those in our life who loves us, I'm positive the both of us will be just fine.
Apollo: (Smiles Softy while Tears Falling out of his eyes) Yeah.....I....(Hugs Maya Back) Honestly Believe you're right on this, Maya. Thank you.
Maya: You're welcome, Polly. I'm always here for each and everyone of you guys, okay?
Apollo: I definitely know that now....
...................................
2:14 p.m. on the sidewalk to Everything Wright Inc. Office...........
Apollo: (Smiles Softly as he Walk Next to Maya) Not gonna lie, I honestly had a great time with you today, Maya.
Maya: (Smiles Brightly) Aww~ I had a great time with you too, Little Brother Polly~
Apollo: Seriously?!
Maya: Yes. (Smirks Playfully) I'm older than you, remember?~
Apollo: (Rolled his Eyes Once More) At least I'm taller than....
Maya: (Pouts at Apollo) Being taller doesn't matter when you're still younger than me?!
Apollo: (Smirks Playfully) Says the short lady next to me.
Maya: ('Hmph') Now I'm starting get where you get your sarcastic, smart mouth from....
Apollo: (Raised an Eyebrow) From who exactly?
Maya: Your boss.
Apollo: (Was About to say Something....but Decided to Agree what Maya is saying) Yeah.....I think I starting what you're saying here....(Smiles Softly) Still, you were pretty to hangout with.
Maya: (Smiles Brightly) You too, Polly.....Even if you are dork.....
Apollo: Hey!
Maya: .......Whom we all Love very much!~
Apollo: ('Sigh') Be lucky I consider you my sister figure at all.....
Maya: (Giggles Softly) I already am!~

2018 Book Recap!
If you follow me on twitter you saw this already, but here’s my favorites I read this year.
They weren’t all 2018 releases, but they’re what hit my kindle/bookshelf and stood out! In reverse order, basically, of when I read them. Check out the list below - it’s a little eclectic.
The Good Neighbor: The Life and Works of Fred Rogers (Maxwell King) - My toddler is ALL ABOUT Mr. Rogers. Turns out he was just as wonderful in life as he was on TV. If you’ve got a small person in your life who loves him (or you were one), I recommend this deep dive into his life and legacy.
Blackfish City (Sam J. Miller) - This sat on my kindle for months before I opened it, but once I passed the first few chapters and got into the world, I blew through 90% in a day. Beautifully woven storytelling, deep worldbuilding. Infrastructure, plague, and culture clash: three things that win me instantly. PLUS a nonbinary POV character!!
A Conspiracy of Truths (Alex Rowland) - I hate unreliable narrators, and yet, here I am, in love with this book. I finished the audiobook (which is BEAUTIFULLY narrated!!) and actually yelled out loud when there wasn’t any more. WHAT A WORLD. Economics, legal drama, and grumpy characters: three more things I can’t resist in a novel.
A Duke by Default/A Princess in Theory (Alyssa Cole) - I hadn’t read much romance until this year, and I don’t know why because turns out I love it. Or at least, I love Alyssa Cole’s work. Both of these had great heroines and super fun supporting casts. I loved both of them equally. I want the next one immediately.
Witchmark (C.L. Polk) - Everyone said I’d love this. EVERYONE WAS RIGHT. Magic! Bikes! Social class based on a false meritocracy! MURDER! MAGIC-SCIENCE BLEND! REALLY FREAKY PAYOFF! Read it. You’re missing out if you don’t.
Spinning Silver (Naomi Novik) - Now, I’ve loved Naomi Novik’s work for about fifteen years. I knew I’d like this one. What I didn’t expect was to have to lie down for a few hours to contemplate it after reading it in one go. I love a main character who ISN’T traditionally sympathetic but you love anyway. Beautifully woven folklore and feeling.
Legend (and sequels) (Marie Lu) - I love YA dystopias with all my heart. This was such a great one. I loved the characters, I loved the setting, I loved seeing the broader world than is usually seen in a post-apocalyptic setting (how DO other governments handle the end of the old way??) Just a delightful read.
Fuzzy Nation (John Scalzi) - I tried to minimize my white men on my reading list this year, but Scalzi is always an exception. I LOVE the original work, and this is a beautiful update. But then, legal battles in space will always win me over. Love it just as much as HBP’s, which is a pretty high bar to cross.
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Julie C Dao) - This took me a while to get through, because it was so, I don’t know, filled with impending doom? This little book had such a dark, blood-soaked voice, and I love a fairytale retelling that DOESN’T go how you expect. Absolutely worth reading. Lush setting, high body count.
The Poet X (Elizabeth Acevedo) - If I had known this was all in verse, I wouldn’t have picked it up. So I’m really glad I didn’t know that. If that turns you off, listen to the audiobook. A phenomenal performance. What an immersive experience this book was. It’s stuck with me for months after reading.
The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (Meg Elison) - I love post-apocalyptic stories. This was a brutal one. Explores how different communities deal in the face of disaster, and not for the weak of stomach. But one of my favorite PA books of the year for sure. Bought the sequel and finished both in one day.
An Extraordinary Union/A Hope Divided (Alyssa Cole) - The other set of her books I devoured this year. The first slavery-era US romance I’ve read that didn’t leave a sour taste in my mouth. The way she builds her characters and their bonds is just SO #goals.
Orientalism (Edward Said) - I’ve been meaning to read this for a while, and I finally made it through this year. A little dated, maybe, but a dense brick of really interesting thinking and history. A classic for a reason!! The audiobook is GREAT.
Americanah (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) - I love a character who is lying to herself! And I love a book where the backstory is meted out in drips and dabs. A dive into communities I know very little about, some of which are right around the corner from me. Ifemelu is a completely solid character, one that feels ABSOLUTELY real.
Trail of Lightning (Rebecca Roanhorse) - If you’ve read her short fiction, you know she’s a master. This lived up to it. Post-apocalyptic Navajo monsterhunters? Exactly as awesome as promised. The mythology and worldbuilding are perfection.
The Calculating Stars/The Fated Sky (Mary Robinette Kowal) - THESE BOOKS! I love alternate history, I love space, I love characters who confront prejudice within themselves and without! Every character makes SENSE, even when they’re awful! All the science feels absolutely real! I WANT TO GO TO SPACE
The Book of M (Peng Shepherd) - My goodness, I read a lot of post apocalyptic novels this year? This one has one of my personal fears - memory loss that can’t be stopped. Another great blend of science and maybe-magic and spirituality (?) and how humans cope with weird, horrifying, tragic things.
Alexander Hamilton (Ron Chernow) - I figured before seeing Hamilton I needed to read the book, and I’m really glad I did. Super engaging, with just the right blend of anecdote and data. After reading this I definitely annoyed my mother and my spouse during the whole musical by whispering trivia at them.
War Against All Puerto Ricans (Nelson Denis) - I’m ashamed to say I knew very little about the history of Puerto Rico. After reading this book, that really pisses me off. The US really did PR wrong, and continues to do so. A vital read for anyone interested in US history.
Cinder/Scarlet/Winter/Cress (Marissa Meyer) - Apparently people have been into these for years and I’m just hitting them now. Fun YA, a genre I’ve missed (I like all this hard-hitting, serious YA, but sometimes over the top silly is absolutely necessary!). Spouse and I enjoyed pointing out all the absurd fairy tale tropes.
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel) - !!! I’m ALL ABOUT books that weave together multiple stories that you KNOW how to intersect somehow but you don’t know HOW IT WILL HAPPEN! Post apocalyptic, weaving stories over fifteen years, all connecting to the life of one guy as the apocalypse hits. GREAT.
All God’s Children Need Travelling Shoes (Maya Angelou) - Yes, I’m well past missing the boat here. But I’m catching up. My goodness, she’s a beautiful writer. And the period covered in the book is spellbinding and brutal and painful and gorgeous.
Cooking is Terrible (Misha Fletcher) - Okay, do you have like twelve minutes and four dollars to cook dinner every night? THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. Easy recipes in non-threatening form, with going off-script absolutely encouraged. I read this start to finish and have been referring back FREQUENTLY as I cook.
Front Desk (Kelly Yang) - THE MIDDLE GRADE BOOK I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED. Oh, this was wonderful. I want to give this to every ten year old I know (which is actually none?). Mysteries! Racism! Badass middle schoolers! Intra-community problems! Three-dimensional characters! YES!
Edge of Nowhere (Felicia Davin) - SPACE ROMANCE! Teleportation! Cafe-owning lesbians! Sweet big stoic guy/small angry disaster guy romance (my FAVORITE KIND)! SPACE SPORTS! Space HEIST!!!! Alternate dimensions! YES.
Everything I Never Told You (Celeste Ng) - This one hurt. What real, beautiful, flawed, horrible characters. All their choices made sense in context, all their pain felt real, and I didn’t want to leave them when the book ended. Content warnings for child death. The 1970s have never felt so close.
Little Fires Everywhere (Celeste Ng) - I usually hate books that start at the end, but this one earned it. Disaster rich people are kind of my jam, especially when they have consequences. And again the characters were the stars. I felt like I knew everyone, and I loved them even when they were awful.
Into the Drowning Deep (Mira Grant) - I’m never going in the ocean again. Mermaids have been ruined forever. Terrifying. Great characters, some of whom die horribly. Scary scary unending horrorshow. But oh, what a way to go. Gory fun filled with great representation.
Uprooted (Naomi Novik) - I was so delighted by Spinning Silver I almost forgot that I loved this one NEARLY as much! Scary forest, plenty of fantasy/fairytale tropes turned on their heads. Disaster love interest. Competent, frustrated main character. A+.
The Beauty that Remains - There were a lot of dead friends books this year, and this was my favorite in the not-police-related category of those. Strangers whose lives weave together around the deaths of three people close to them all, and the band that brought them all closer. Gorgeous.
An Indigenous People’s History of the US (Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz) - Another one that’s absolutely vital in filling gaps in the history I’ve learned of this country. Engaging writing and strong voice. Didn’t give me any warm patriotic fuzzies, that is for sure.
Company Town (Madeline Ashby) - Floating future town! Unions! Murder! Loved it.
The Underground Railroad (Colson Whitehead) - I know the boat on this was a couple years ago, but what a chilling, brutal, beautiful book. The slight speculative element was just the perfect touch to give it a flavor of myth, if that makes sense. Steel yourself before reading.
River of Teeth (Sarah Gailey) - HIPPOS! IN THE MISSISSIPPI! This was a DELIGHT from start to finish. Leverage on HIPPOS in the Wild West?! YES PLEASE.
The Wanderers (Meg Howrey) - Astronauts on a simulated mission to Mars basically all break down, as does everyone around them. I adored this book. I loved the thousand POVs because each one was its own distinct voice. I loved the different ways everybody fell apart!
Infomocracy (Malka Older) - WORLDBUILDING!!!!!! Future elections, future political system, future tech, all brilliantly built. I need to read the sequels, but I haven’t managed to work up the brainpower I know they deserve!!! READ THIS if you like scifi political minutiae (I DO)
The Poppy War (RF Kuang) - The first half is Tamora Pierce, the second half is George RR Martin, but better. This was nothing like what I expected. Absolutely staggeringly, brutally beautiful. What a bold novel. Will buy anything else she ever writes sight unseen.
Warcross (Marie Lu) - This is what I wanted Ready Player One to be. Virtual reality gaming with real life consequences. References and fantastic characters. The sequel is just as good.
Zeroboxer (Fonda Lee) - BOXING IN SPACE! Secret science!! MYSTERIES!! All things I love.
Dread Nation (Justina Ireland) - GREAT. Zombies during the Civil War. A heroine who takes no shit and instead takes zombie heads off. COMBAT SCHOOLS. SUPER GREAT.
An Ember in the Ashes (Sabaa Tahir) - I didn’t expect to love this the way I did, but I devoured it, and the two sequels, each in about a day. This felt like all the best parts of old-school fantasy novels, the thick kind you shoved in your backpack in seventh grade, but BETTER. And I love a good Evil Roman!
Space Opera (Catherynne Valente) - Queen meets Hitchhiker’s Guide! This was a JOURNEY from start to finish, a glorious, absurd, delightful meditation on fame and Eurovision and what it means to be worthwhile and human and a person. YES.
The Broken Earth (NK Jemisin) - More like the BROKEN ME after reading these. Periapocalyptic fiction, absolutely 100% deserving every award and more. Content warning for very small child death brutally described, and more horrors. NK Jemisin goes HARD.
American Islamophobia (Khaled A Beydoun) - Could not put this down. I learned an astonishing amount, especially about the historical place of Islam, Muslims, and Islamophobia in the US. A hard read, but worth the work.
All the Birds in the Sky (Charlie Jane Anders) - Okay, I have to admit it, I have no idea what was going on in this book. But that didn’t stop me from loving it!! Witches and technology and animals and weird apocalyptic nonsense! DELIGHTFUL
Anger is a Gift (Mark Oshiro) - Another YA book that pulled no punches. What a phenomenal look into the way kids and communities of color move through the world, and how the world moves against them.
History is All You Left Me (Adam Silvera) - SO MANY DEAD FRIEND BOOKS THIS YEAR. A great use of the start at the middle, work both directions format, it covers both the time before the death of the MC’s ex and the fallout. I wept through most of it.
White Tears (Hari Kunzru) - Horror, and the villain is essentially appropriation. Very satisfying! The author’s love of music comes through. A nerdy, scary, millennial read.
Love, Hate and Other Filters (Samira Ahmed) - Loved this. Melded teen interpersonal drama, family expectations vs. dreams, and confronting the world and the way they see you all at once, woven together in a beautiful way.
A People’s History of the US (Howard Zinn) - Obviously this is great. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by his son. Sobbed through the child labor chapters. Cheered at the union chapters. Loved it.
Thornfruit/Nightvine/Shadebloom (Felicia Davin) - I LOVE WORLDBUILDING. This is a fantasy on a world that doesn’t turn, so night and day are DIRECTIONS, not times. SO COOL. And I adore the main character. Small Angry/Large Shy is the BEST ROMANCE TROPE. The magic and language is beautifully developed.
Tempests and Slaughter (Tamora Pierce) - Look. I’ll read a gonorrhea brochure if Tamora Pierce writes it. So you knew this would be on the list. But it earned its spot! I love Numair in the Daine series, and he’s a tiny ball of feelings in this. I need more.
Unfamiliar Fishes (Sara Vowell) - I’ve always been interested in Hawaiian history, and though this was a little light and memoir-y for my taste, it contained a shocking amount of information that went down easy in her light, friendly style. Absolutely worth the couple hours it’ll take you.
The Only Harmless Great Thing (Brooke Bolander) - Elephants! Memory! What it means to have value! What we owe other beings! Radium! Sharp and dark and deeper than it has any right to be.
