astroboy 2003 the ramblings
So i convinced two of my friends to watch astroboy 2003 with me and here are some of my highlights and ramblings.
we saw the dub version of our country (brasil) which unfortunately lacks a lot of original context and scenes from the original anime, with that said we still had a lot of fun despite the lack of content in some places, mostly thanks to the voice acting and the adaptation done with the material that the voice actors had.
Note : currently I'm still watching the subtitled version and the extra materials so I can catch most of the content that I might be missing.
The voice acting is quite aggressive and ironic at some moments and we love every second of it.
We are all pinning for tenma. (Ochanomizu too)
We want to give Atom some clothes because he looks adorable with them.
My friend gave Uran a gun.
We actually really liked some of the secondary or episode only characters and some of my friend's complaints were about wanting to see more from them, especially Atom's friends which i agree and i did want to see more from tamao and Shibugaki individually in a similar way to what we got from the microbear episode.
we didn´t saw the denko episode thanks to it not being avaliable in the dub version, i have no idea why is that and this also created a problem while viewing the intro & backstory for atlas/daishi, the translation changed too much of the dialogue and this combined with the editing mad everything really unclear for us.
Pluto's arc probably has the same problem.
“He has a pimp's car.” - me seeing tenma's car
“Tenma is kind of a chad.” My friend.
We stan tawashi.
i have a unreasonoble love for tamao and i want the best for the lil guy.
“Please don't kill off atlas again.” my friend seeing Atlas about to be kill for the 3° time.
“2000s anime girl.” Friend about Epsilon.
"i don't blame the blue knight." friend about blue knight.
At some point the dubious website we are using was out of air so we watched the 2009 movie with an audio modifier.
For context this movie is still remember was some random pirate DVD movie most of us 2000 kids saw that for some reason has a tv host providing the voice for atom, is really bizarre but at least is very hilarious thanks to the memes we count use during our watch which included bass boosting the audio when tobio dies.
"noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" friends seeing the robot on the volcano flashback.
we finish our watch with a made up amv because one of us was playing linkin park on twitter and he decided to play it over the opening of the show, it sycronizes for whatever reason and is funny af because the op is too happy.
end of ramble

I have a cup for you :)
"Evolution" in AB stories and elsewhere are liken to a shuttlecock. I chuckle at the use of such bio-centric concepts in sci-fi and how well they are applied with massive hits (The Borg) and misses (Tenma). That and as a child of a trekkie I felt your ST ft. AB posts to be a call to nostalgia.
I think Tenma would be more afraid of merging with something as collectivist as the Borg and I think even he wouldn't want Atom to be part of it either as it would be a two fold issue: Tenma is still very attached to Atom intellectually and emotionally and his egoist self would leave him hyperaware of the possibility that someone else outdid his work. The Borg would just add someone elses genius on top of Tenma's and eventually, his genius would just not be there.
Star Trek AU thoughts percolating.....thinking about Tenma in next generation and how he would feel about the Borg. On the one hand: this is the next stage of evolution to him. Bio-machine entities that evolve by assimilating new species into their collective consciousness? Forever improving? He would be obsessed
But on the other hand: collective consciousness. I do not think he would be willing to sacrifice his individual self even if it meant becoming a "higher being"

[ I liked the idea of what would have happened to some of the characters if they had survived. I already have some developments with Tobio, but I haven't even thought about this guy. And it's more likely that if Tobio had survived, Daichi would have survived too. I think so. in this matter relying more on the 2003 manga. ]
Now to the ideas. I can’t speak with 100% certainty yet, because everything is very raw.
1. Dr. Tenma never lost his son, so he never sought to replace a human with a robot. Neither Astro Boy nor Atlas were ever created.
2. Daichi is serious injuries after Katari pushes him off the highway but survives. He is quickly found and taken to intensive care. Advanced technology and his father's money save his life and guarantee an almost complete recovery, even if some body parts and organs had to be replaced with artificial ones.
3. A serious talk with his father is inevitable. Eventually, he will have to take responsibility and become the president of the Tokugawa company.
This is where the character background ends, and then the main plot (which is in development and in disarray).
[ Below I was just fooling around, because while I was drawing, I was very inspired by "Blow Back" by Akira Yamaoka. Probably, the lines from there convey Daichi's state at that moment. ]
then there was the design. uhh, up until that point I didn't really have a clear idea of what exactly I wanted to achieve. maybe after a while I'll have a better idea, but for now we have what we have.
Here Daichi is about 26 years old, and his father passed away a few years ago. So Daichi finally has a little more freedom, which he no longer knows how to use. He does his job well, even if his methods are... unconventional. and even if he himself jumps into the thick of things, risking burning out completely.

i think astro's va could have done a good job but she was terribly terribly directed
also you frogot to mention tenma's va, he rocked
the brazlian dub is fair superior, it stil carrys on some of the issues of the english one (not to mention cuts and soundtrack) but its overall much better (astro sounds perfect there, an adorable brave and inocent hearted little boy)
but i think the biggest changes on the dub is the inpact
going back to the dialogue i think the changes are subtle but they make a big diference
the characters may say smilar things but they way they put it changes
as i say the dub lowers the inpact of some moments significantly, i didnt care much for episodes 11 and 12 when i wached them dubbed but their dubed versons left a mark on me (espetialy episode 11 that made me kinda emotional) i think that's the way you can put the dub's changes: subtle and small but they make a big diferençe overall
but nothing is nowere near as bad as the dub's soundtrack
GOD THAT SOUNDTRACK!
its just generic sifi-ish background music! they lower the inpact of the scenes greatly in a way that's even kind of funny tbh
i hate espetialy the song that plays in the credits (and some moments in the anime)
it haunts my nigthmares
anyways that's all i have to say for now if you wanna wach it dubbed wach the brazlian dub if you dont know portugese then im sorry
posible astroboy hot take
i think i sould have said this in my post about toshio tenma but i forgot so ima gonna say it here:
i think some pepole overexaggerate how bad the 2003 anime dub is
yes its pretty bad cuts are always a bad thing but hear me out for a second
yes they cuted tobio's death and changed atlas's story but those are the only major plot poits cuted/changed
also a good chunk of dialouges where fatefuly translated
the REAL problem with the dub to me is the voice acting and ESPECIALLY the soundtrack
err...that's all i have to say!
