Interview
BB: welcome back everyone! So good to see you all here today! We're back for a 3rd time here on BB Channel! Like before we're joined by the lil cuties of Ed and Mari. But this time their parents have come to join!
Rex: hello...
Quetz: Hola!
BB: that wasn't a very strong greeting Rex!
Rex: I'm tired right now. Can't this wait?
BB: time waits for no one and neither does BB!
Mari: already this is super annoying! *sigh* so why'd you decide to bring them into this anyways?
BB: the people who follow this blog need to see how they're doing so long after Chaldea too! You two have had the spotlight for a while, so now you should share.
Ed: I mean... guess that's fair.
Mari: should anyone be dealing with this?
Rex: I'd rather not be here either.
BB: aaaww, don't be like that! This will be fun!
Quetz: that's a very hard sell BB.
BB: just humor me at least.
Rex: ...fine
Quetz: what are we even doing anyways?
BB: some of your interdimensional buds have sent in questions about how you guys are doing, and I'm here to get those answers for them!
Quetz: that actually sounds nice...
BB: what'd I tell ya!?
Rex: yeah yeah, pls get started.
BB: fine. First few are from my precious bombardier beetle! First one she asks: do you have any pets?
Mari: oof! Do we!
Rex: currently we have four dogs: 1 German Shepherd named King, a Pitbull named Sparks, a Dogo Argentino named Duke, and a Corgi named Marshmallow.
Quetz: but also we have a habit of adopting older dogs who aren't likely to get a home because of their age or rescues to give them a nice place to stay.
BB: aaawww, well ain't that wholesome?
Mari: we also have mom's bigass pterosaur!
BB: less wholesome. Next one from my dear yellowjacket: favorite foods?
Rex: PIZZA!
Mari: CAKE!
BB: whoa! Pump the brakes you two! No need to get too excited!
Quetz: ...honestly? I don't really have a favorite food. Just a bunch I like to eat and some I don't. If I had to choose, I'd say chocolate.
Ed: I'm a steak man myself.
BB: 2 sweets, and 2 savories. Next up! Who wakes up earliest?
Rex: Quetz
Ed and Mari: Mom
Quetz: ...I guess it's me... hehehe.
BB: honestly I'm not surprised. She's so damn athletic and even used to be a professional.
BB: next! Where do you all like to go for vacations and such?
Ed: mom and dad have a vacation home in Alaska.
BB: Alaska?! Why?
Mari: when warm weather is the norm for you it's nice to go to the cold to change things up.
Rex: yeah, it's actually very nice. Not too many people and beautiful nature sights.
BB: well to each their own. Another from my dear antlion: how long does it take to pick a movie or TV show to watch?
Quetz: hehehe, we're all so indecisive it takes ages to pick. It's not uncommon for us to give up after taking so long.
BB: you should work on that. This next one's interesting. My precious army ant also suggests a round of common household jobs and the like from each member.
Rex: hmmm
BB: she gave an example of like, who does the cooking?
Quetz: well it's both me and mi amor in that case. The kids aren't very creative.
Ed: hey! We're plenty creative!
Mari: no we're not, don't lie.
Rex: we only really ask that the kids clean their rooms and any messes they make. We handle most everything else.
BB: they should really show some independence tho. Can't coddle them forever.
BB: in the next one, Cadence asks about a house tour and if there's a jacuzzi.
Quetz: a house tour feels like it should be it's own thing.
Rex: yeah, but we do have a jacuzzi dude, so don't worry.
BB: next one's from Reen: she asks what would life be if you weren't in chaldea,
Rex: y'mean like now? I mean... it's a relatively normalish domestic life? With less work tho.
Quetz: si, I've made plenty from my lucha career before retirement we don't have to worry about money much. But mi amof still makes money just in case.
BB: well after that she asks: how was your life before and after meeting each other?
Rex: ...kinda sad. Aside from chaldea and saving the world, I was kinda just... stagnant. Go to work, go home and so on. Not much to my life before then.
Quetz: ...honestly, for me it was the same. After the age of Gods ended we didn't do much of anything. We mostly watched over humanity, I've been summoned in modern day before but that was rare and infrequent.
Rex: ...after I met Quetz tho... I dunno things felt... better? She kinda forced her way into my life after I summoned her and... I was more then ok to accept her... before long we had something beautiful...
Quetz: aww, mi amor! I'm so happy to hear that!
BB: ain't that sweet? Like me and my dear centipede. Final one from Reen: if you could build a dream home then where? (Can be in fantasy)
Rex: I mean... where we are now is good.
Mari: yeah, right at the border of a huge rainforest in the Yucatan sounds fine.
Ed: but what about the fantasy bit?
Quetz: hmmm... we don't really look at fantasy much. But maybe a castle of some kind?
Rex: or a Mayan temple? But with electricity and Wi-Fi.
BB: that's fair. Need those memes in your life. Now some from Kaz! First she asks: what kind of gifts do you give each other?
Rex: uuhh, well I like getting mi corazon custom things. Like some personal clothes, or even a portrait of the two of us.
Quetz: ehehehe, I like to spoil mi amor with extravagant things! Golden treasure and the like!
Mari: concerning...
BB: next, how would you spend the day if it's raining outside?
Rex: I actually enjoy rainy weather, so I like to chill near a window or even on the porch listening to the rain.
Mari: it's very soothing.
BB: how quaint. Last one from Kaz: whose good at cooking and baking?
Quetz: hehehe, that'd be me. Tho it might be considered cheating since I use my goddess power to help.
Mari: well no one else is the greatest normally so it's fine.
BB: a good 'ol better then nothing kinda attitude! Now we're back to Cadence but with more relaxed questions: what's the current house look like?
Rex: ....big.
Mari: like three stories tall with a DEEP basement.
Ed: like... 5 rooms too many.
Quetz: we also have an indoor pool.
Rex: the outside looks almost gothic, but partially taken over by nature.
BB: all this near a rainforest?
Quetz: si! Despite the size, all the nearby trees still tower over it.
BB: nature can get scary. I've seen worse and have been worse but still. Another one: how do family events function? Any specific holidays?
Quetz: ...most family events are just us... going somewhere nice to eat nice food...
Rex: do they mean bringing extended family? My family lives too far to visit often
Quetz: ...and I'd rather not speak of mine... things have gotten rocky as of late.
Mari: right, well for holidays we celebrate most standard one, like Easter and valentine's and such. For October we kinda try to combine Halloween and Day of the dead.
Ed: but Christmas is the most important for us! Mom and Dad always make the biggest celebrations for Christmas!
BB: gotta love the holidays! Especially when your mom is santa... still weird to say that. Next one! Any plans for the future?
Rex: eh... not really? I mean I want to prepare Maria to continue the family magecraft, since Ed has no interest.
Mari: someone has to continue on this lost practice.
BB: good to know it won't be lost to time like we thought. Next one! Daily life?
Rex: I wake up, eat, work on magecraft, spend family time, spend time with Quetz, go to bed.
Quetz: I wake up, workout, eat, workout, spend time with mi familia, lovely time with mi amor and then I sleep.
Ed: I wake up, take a walk, eat, practice soccer, spend family time, sleep.
Mari: sleep, sleep again, dragged to breakfast by mom, eat, eat again, mess with magecraft, eat, sit with everyone else, scroll thru my phone for hours, sleep.
Quetz: *sigh* mija, you need to change your priorities.
Mari: mmmmm... No.
BB: bad habits there Mari. Next they'd like to know if your in contact with anyone from chaldea? Other then me!
Rex: here's a real quick list: Marie, Mash, Kiara, Penth, Astraea, Martha, Ishtar, Gorgon, Jalter, The twins, your kids BB, etc etc.
Quetz: too many to list...
BB: nice you haven't lost contact! Next! About that Wedding?
Rex: well... it was eventful to say the least. Not long after completing the china LB. Most of the servants were invited, and most of Quetz's family showed up.
Quetz: si, Martha officiated it for us. Most of my family were so nice at the time... too bad that hasn't lasted.
Rex: let's not mention that...
BB: it was such a nice wedding! You two were so "nervous" you had trouble with your vows! How adorable!
Mari: why the quotes?
BB: no reason... now we're at the home stretch! Good 'ol Ash has some for stuff that technically hasn't happened yet, but you should still be able to answer! What responsibilities will Rex take on when he joins the pantheon?
Quetz: ...well he'll be largely a guardian of life on earth. Authority over things like the jungle itself, volcanos, and even snow... for some reason.
Rex: well it still snows in mexico... occasionally.
Quetz: and we'll be sharing authority over Venus! I wanted to share it with mi amor!
BB: cute! Hmmm, not sure if you cananswer this one just yet? Adjusting to God hood?
Rex: well I got to try it out a bit. Summoning lava and snow is... interesting. But also... my mind felt... odd... but also clearer? Not sure how to put it...
BB: I'm sure when you get there you'll get it... took me a bit after servant fest. And how did the other divinities react?
BB: actually I have some recordings of that to answer, so play the clip!
A screen appears showing recordings of some servants, one at a time.
Ishtar: eh! She's turning you into a god!? ...I guess you've earned it master...
Eresh: what!? Can you do that?! ...guess I won't see you in Kur... then again I don't think you have any link to Kur anyways.
Kama: do you really think your cut out for it? I mean... if it's just for you two to be together then I guess it's fine.
Astraea: godhood is a very big responsibility master. Are you certain you're up to it? Saving humanity is also a big task but at least that has an end point. This is... eternal.
Qin: oh! So you have decided to go for immortality after all?! Tho not the same as my methods, it is still good to see you two will be happy together!
Scathach: immortality? I've strived for death for so long... to see you go for immortality... Hopefully you'll find happiness, where I couldn't...
The screen turns off.
BB: very interesting! Most seem hesitant of it all... I for one think it's cute! Imagine in a thousand years you guys have a double date with me and my dear stag beetle!
Rex: ...a thousand years...
Quetz: still having trouble processing it all?
Rex: yeah... maybe when I get there... it'll be easier.
BB: now for today's final one! A scenario! One of you two goes berserk! What does the other do to calm them down?
Rex: well that has happened before... usually a nice hug is more then good enough.
Quetz: si! I've almost destroyed a few servants a few times until mi amor caught me in a hug! I can't bring myself to harm him... so I stop!
BB: sounds too easy... but I've seen that before so... I'll let it slide.
BB: well that's all the time we have for now! Hopefully you all are satisfied by the answers! We'll be doing this again, seeya!
Screen cuts out, the show's over.

hewwo can i please get 1, 31, 36, 38, 46, and 51 for sable, saint, fáelán, novix, marie, and astraea?
oof there's so many of them!! the rest will be under the cut for ease of reading 🥰
why did they choose their class(es)? their subclass(es)?
sable: she wasn't emotional enough to be a barbarian, so she wound up settling for extremely good tracking and expertise in the area around her
st. valentine: oh well saint's was out of necessity, in that the group needed a more powerful spellcaster than a bard could be, and choosing school of enchantment was the closest thing to being a bard but with more powerful spells (although my first time playing a wizard being a bard multiclass is....interesting)
fáelán: it was what the luxon gave to her, and a being of light in a city of darkness granting someone the ability to thrive in darkness? pure twilight cleric love and exactly what she needed
novix: his was entirely a bartering tool to get him out of a bad situation, aka, being with the cult in the underdark
marie: her gifts came to her when she was younger, and then her deal with zaïre helped to make her more disciplined and powerful with her abilities, but being a
astraea: her circle saved her life, and she wouldn't turn away from their offerings, even after she left their presence
they’re given a blank piece of paper–what do they do with it?
sable: crumple it up, uncrumple it, and crumple it again until it becomes super soft
st. valentine: write song lyrics onto it with doodles of hearts on it
fáelán: lots of doodles, hearts and "mrs. mcintyre" written onto it
novix: folding it into different shapes, making one of those fortune teller box things
marie: more doodles, lots of spider webs, maybe new ideas for tattoos
astraea: a combination of folding it to make a paper star, and then unfolding it and folding it all again the exact opposite way, until the paper has threadbare joints
what’s a secret they’ve kept?
sable: mila smells very nice
st. valentine: ze doesn't really have a lot of secrets? the biggest one just came out, that ze is zhentarim, so there's that
fáelán: it never came out in the campaign, so i guess that counts as a secret, but fáelán is a lil trans girl
novix: he's not actually all that angry at his parents; it's just easier to say that he was angry at them than it is to say he's just a scared little boy so he ran away
marie: she's someone who has spent her entire life chasing immortality, but if anything were to happen to james and she couldn't bring him back, she would take her own life (although idk if this is really a secret)
astraea: her entire childhood and the abuse she endured 😔
what do they smell like?
sable: mint and thyme...a march snowfall under a full moon....spiced cider clinging to the back of your throat
st. valentine: cherry candy...hearing your favorite song for the first time...maraschino syrup fingerprints on a chin
fáelán: strawberries...a spring night with your lover....something sweet and ephemeral that you can't remember
novix: bergamot and cigarettes...a dark forest beneath a new moon hidden by rain clouds....the morning dew droplet where the world looks upside down....
marie: cocoa butter and incense...a charged moment where you're alone with your crush and don't know who is going to make the first move....your favorite satin negligee
astraea: vanilla and incense...spa body wax melting in a ceramic dish...starlight on the lake's unbroken surface
what do they deprive themself of?
sable: common joys of townsfolk, because she feels like she should preserve the ways of her people, even if that means doing things in more difficult ways
st. valentine: cern
fáelán: acting her age, if that makes any sense? like she takes on a lot of responsibilities for someone so young
novix: again, acting his age, but that's moreso because he's trying to seem cool to the elf he's traveling with
marie: once again!!! being able to act her age!! she runs a business and got her degree a year early just so she could get back to her home life, and like, nola makes you grow up early but still. she could use some relaxation
astraea: i think she could use some self confidence, to be quite honest, which may seem rich considering how astraea is, but it's driven from self loathing, not self confidence nor compassion
what is the most beautiful thing in the world, for them?
sable: the cubs playing on the ice floes and learning to swim for the first time
st. valentine: the rainbows caused by a spotlight cast upon hir when on stage
fáelán: the luxon beacon in the bastion, lit up during moments of prayer
novix: a thunderstorm in the forest, or kellen with a flower crown
marie: james' bedhead in the morning, because it means he got to spend the night long enough to have bedhead
astraea: it honestly depends on the mood, but most days it's a moment of solitude somewhere where she doesn't have to be "on" - usually at home, but sometimes an empty office
#inbox#kesselins#dnd: sable#dnd: st. valentine#dnd: fáelán#dnd: novix#dnd: marie#dnd: astraea#thank you!!!!#these were so much fun

ScotsSwap 2020
Bombycine
Recipient: Jo (@notasapleasure). I hope I’ve done Jerott justice. It’s been absolute torture not talking to you about writing this <3
Prompt: Philippa and anyone as a BroTP, ‘Take the words 'sharp' 'alone' 'close[near]' 'missed' and give me some Pain :’)’ - it’s mainly alone and pain really, although Jerott has had some close encounters with sharp objects in the recent past. I hope it’s still delicious angst, even if it has wandered a bit off topic.
Setting: St. Mary’s, early autumn 1560.
Characters: Jerott Blyth, Philippa Crawford, Francis Crawford.
Relationships: Philippa + Jerott, Francis + Jerott, Philippa/Francis.
Rating: I’m not sure? References to things that happen to Khaireddin, but nothing explicit.
Summary: Sleep is not kind to Jerott Blyth.
Word Count: 2986.
Note: This is broadly compliant with this and this, mainly so I could squeeze Astraea the cat in there.
Spoilers: Non-specific spoilers for stuff that happens in Checkmate.
*******************************************************
The pain rose up to meet Jerott Blyth, mingled with the waters of the Middle Sea, and he drowned in the scent of spikenard and jasmine, in roiling fumes and obscene kisses and all the stench and horror of battle. Even as he fell, half-blind from the blow to his temple that had swept him overboard and the haze of gunpowder that hung, cloying, over the churning blue-green waters of the Mediterranean, he heard behind him the low, animal noises of the foundering ship.
The pain at shoulder and temple and thigh howled in awful harmony with the tortured screaming of overstressed timber and the crack of snapping lines. Flashes of light filled his failing vision, amber and gold and cornsilk-fair, yet, through them all, he could see glimpses of palm and pomegranate beneath a blistering African sun; the smell of storax and benzoin clung to the aching tissues of his throat and curdled in the saltwater filling his burning nostrils.
Although Mehedia lay more than a hundred and fifty miles distant, set on its strangling neck of land in the shining sea, passing vistas reached him through the sheet of blue water and yellow fire. He thought he could see flashes of gnarled grey-green olive groves and fields touched with the blush of new barley and smell the sun-warmed earth and the fetor of bombyx mori. Even as the roiling waters of the Middle Sea saturated his padded gambeson, drawing him down and down into the currents that eddied and swirled around him, down into the vortex of the foundering ship, he thought he could feel the splintering wood of a burning hut beneath the tips of his blistered fingers. Even as his useless arm hung wavering and limp as storm-wracked kelp and a ribbon of blood like scarlet silk wound through the water around him, he touched the soft, pliant curve of a child’s back and the damp weight of of amber hair tacky with cooling blood.
İpec böceǧi, called the dry, whispery voice of the old woman, and Jerott Blyth flinched. For this wast thou born? What lack is there in Scotland that her sons grow so feeble?
The saltwater again burned in Jerott Blyth’s nostrils and, with the sudden clarity of the sleeper and the man nearing death, he knew that the sea battle and the olive groves alike were the mere conjurings of a mind caught in a drugged stupor. Slitting open stinging eyes against the fetid, poisonous fumes of burning silk cocoons, tasting bitter almonds like charnel flesh on the back of his tongue, he saw with little surprise that he lay beside the discarded body of a fair-haired child on the rough floor of the warehouse belonging to the silk-farmer’s sister in Mehedia. The marks left by the mutes were livid on a face touched also by the griefs of a short life twisted and warped against itself.
The great impulse to live that dwelt within Jerott Blyth’s sturdy flesh took fresh flame, and, even against the will that cringed against it, he drew a dragging, acrid breath and smelt the cloying, indecent reek of the perfume that clung to the boy-child’s cooling flesh.
The cornflower-blue eyes were open and far-seeing beneath their heavy, slack lids as they had not been beneath the merciful bindings of Amiens or in the wreckage of a shattered face on a Northumbrian hillside. The soft, kitten’s mouth, still bearing the last, revolting brush of paint, formed words without breath, as parched as the desert air. İpec böceǧi, for this wast thou born? Is there no failure thou hast not encompassed?
*******************************************************
The gasping breath that woke Jerott Blyth was his own, rasping like poison in his chest, and his outflung arm howled with pain. For a moment, he thought he could feel the raw burns of Mehedia licking its length and he was back in Djerba - the Djerba of some seven years past - with Onophrion Zitwitz’s jellies melting on his tongue and the golden warmth of the North African sun spilling through the latticed windows of his convalescent room. For a moment, he burned again with fever on the boat fleeing the carnage of Djerba with Giovanni Andrea Doria fretting and fuming at the prow and Danny’s hand clasping his own and the utter failure of the Knights of St. John sour in a mouth that cracked and bled. With a blink against the enveloping darkness that admitted neither sunlight nor the deadly fire of an overturned brazier, he recognised the shadow of the bed curtains and the dim glow from the last embers of the fire dying in the hearth. A dint on the pillow by his head suggested the recent warmth of a cat, but he was utterly alone, neither prisoner nor knight.
With a hollow, awful noise, half sob, half laugh, Jerott buried his head in his shaking hands, feeling the trembling weakness in the injured arm and the aching memory of the old burns. It seemed to him that, like the silk moth which has no organs by which it can nourish itself, he lacked in that moment any means to sustain himself, and could merely exist in the labouring of his lungs and the eddying horror of the dream. Khaireddin, who he had failed to save; Marthe, whose death he had caused, however unwitting; Francis, who might have died by that same act of mercy; the boy Diccon, weeping before a father who turned an implacable face to him, the warm light of the afternoon gilding both their pale heads.
Although he had regretted his hasty words as soon as they were spoken - Damn it, Francis, he’s not one of your men to browbeat. Can you not show him half the pity you gave the other? - he felt the previous day’s anger kindle again at the memory of the cool displeasure in Francis’s eyes and the flat, uncompromising line of his mouth, even as his infant son tugged at his silken hose and begged to be held.
Mo cridh is a good little boy now, said the voice of that other child with the pitiless clarity of memory.
With no more conscious thought than the doomed silk moth, Jerott swung his legs over the edge of the bed, groping with chilled toes for the slippers that had been set out for him. Although the day had been warm for Scotland on the cusp of autumn, a decided chill hung in the night air and he shrugged into the borrowed robe, feeling it pull across the shoulders where it was cut for a slighter man.
In the near total darkness, he let his feet and memory guide him through the corridors of St. Mary’s, grateful at least that although the house no longer maintained its martial aspect, Francis’s taste did not yet run to endless trinkets and furbelows to trip the unwary. At the head of the stairs, something sleek and pale regarded him curiously from a ribbon of pale moonlight where a shutter stood ajar, but, before he could do more than peer blearily back, it disappeared into the recesses of a court cupboard made monstrous by the shadows.
Once, on a night such as this, Jerott Blyth might have sought the wine cellar and all its bottled comforts; once, Lymond might have locked it against just such an eventuality. Tonight, however, Jerott wandered through the silent house with no goal in his mind save to put as much space as the night permitted between himself and the fading echoes of his dream. His slippered feet padded softly across the expensive carpets and he recalled with a shudder the carpet painted with red and white in the in the selamlìk like a terrible exchequer counting out life and death - say goodnight to the dark.
Despite his meandering path, Jerott was not overly surprised when he lifted his eyes and found himself in the passageway leading to the great, vaulted kitchen. There would be fresh water there to wash the taste of bitter almonds and smoke from his mouth, thanks to some mechanical contrivance of Lancelot Plummer’s, and the cool of the Scots night under cloud-veiled stars through the door beyond.
He had already stepped through the door when he realised that long room was not empty; the faint glow from the banked hearth was matched by a candle flame and in its light a slim figure moved briskly from table to cupboard. Jerott froze, for a startled moment half-fearing some apparition from his dream, or, worse yet, an encounter with Lymond for which he was ill-prepared, but as the figure turned to greet him, he saw the fall of dark, unbound hair swing out around slender shoulders and recognised his hostess in a robe de chambre belonging, like Jerott’s own borrowed garment, no doubt, to her husband.
‘Jerott!’ Philippa came more fully into the light, her smile warming with more pleasure in the encounter than Jerott thought strictly reasonable for some time after two in the morning. ‘Couldn’t you sleep either?’
‘No,’ Jerott said shortly, and wondered what else he could say, but Philippa seemed unperturbed.
‘She gaue him milke, the slepe fell in his hede,’ she pronounced cheerfully. ‘I was making myself a posset, guaranteed by Kate to knock out half the county - of course, that’s in England. Would you like some?’
About to demur, Jerott was shepherded without delay to a seat at the well-scrubbed board and had an equally well-scrubbed lemon deposited in his nerveless hands. Half-hysterically, he found himself thinking that Djerba might have gone better with Philippa Crawford and not Giovanni Andrea Doria commanding the massed forces of Christendom. Taking the knife presented to him, he set to paring dutiful curls of zest and listened to the surprisingly comforting sounds as Philippa clattered around the kitchen, collecting the milk and cream from the cool slate and the sugar and nutmeg from the spice chest. As she worked, she hummed to herself, a fragment of Salve intemerata virgo, a snatch of a filthy ditty that he had heard on the docks at Leith. In short order, he found himself in possession of a steaming goblet of spiced posset aromatic with lemon and nutmeg and the Crawfords’ good French eau de vie, and being appraised frankly by the appallingly candid brown eyes of Francis’s child-bride.
A child no longer, he conceded with a shade of reluctance, although he could see the ghost of the scrubby and dishevelled adolescent alongside the the elegant courtier in the lines of her face as he squinted against the flickering warmth of the candlelight. A single lock of brown hair fell in disarray across her high brow, but, even in the dim light, it was glossy and well-trimmed, and the thin-fingered hands cupping the second goblet no longer showed the effects of diligent adolescent gnawing.
‘So,’ Philippa said conversationally, pushing a plate of sweetmeats towards him. ‘You saw Diccon’s argument with Francis.’
The posset soured in Jerott’s mouth. ‘Argument? He’s a child. He was crying. God, Philippa!’ Francis’s retort had, as ever, raised an angry and impotent resentment within him only made worse by the recognition that he was over-matched.
‘He’s Francis’s child,’ Philippa corrected gently. ‘He could pick a fight with a fencepost and is as highly strung as a papingo at a fair.’
Jerott subsided sulkily into his chair and eyed a sticky square of something dripping with honey and jewelled with candied nuts.
‘Baklava has many curative properties, but the banishment of nightmares is not one of them.’
As so often with Lymond, the softly spoken words left Jerott feeling as if he had been flensed and scoured raw, but there was a kindness in Philippa’s face that Lymond rarely permitted himself to display, and Jerott consciously relaxed the fingers clenched bitingly tight around the goblet until the ache of the healing wound in his shoulder subsided.
‘What, then? What possible reason could Francis have to treat his own son like that after… after…’
‘After losing Khaireddin? But if Diccon’s offence was no grave matter, neither was Francis’s.’ And in quick, amused words, Philippa sketched the outlines of a scene quite different to that which Jerott had seen - or thought he had seen: the tired, overexcited child; the hand tangled in the cat’s inviting fur until she awarded the barest scratch to her tormentor for this impertinent ambuscade; Francis’s insistence that Diccon should render his apologies to his feline friend before any consoling cuddle; child and cat alike falling asleep in Lymond’s lap even as he himself drowsed in the late sunlight. The light in the cornflower-blue eyes that had been not cold anger but a carefully corralled excess of emotion.
Philippa licked a crumb of honey-soaked semolina from her fingers and continued in a quieter voice, recalling the outspoken, stalwart child that Jerott remembered from the long-ago voyage, the terror and exhilaration alike of playing for Roxelana Sultàn, the dawning fear she had felt in the sultana’s gilded and grilled listening post above the Divan as she saw Jubrael Pasha for the first time. Kuzúm’s whipping and the despair of her wedding night in the French ambassador’s residence and the long journey home.
As if it were drawn out of him like a skein of silk unravelling, Jerott found himself responding in kind, telling the story of his ill-fated foray to Mehedia, the horror that he had found there and the coming horror that he had been unable to prevent. Just a quarter-hour’s difference, just a little more wit to see the danger surrounding him, just a little more strength in his arm… Remembering the obscene travesty of the kiss pressed into the crook of his neck, Jerott looked away, into the shadows that crowded the corners of the kitchen, but Philippa’s fingertips pressed lightly against his own, a benediction of a kind, as cleansing as any priestly absolution. In a flash, he remembered the calm of Francis’s face set against the crispness of his pillow in Amiens, the blind, blank eyes and bloodless visage and quick, expressive features shorn of all emotion.
İpec böceǧi, for this wast thou born?
And - no; they had stood as well as they might against a malicious and terrible will and had found beyond its bounds some place of refuge, though it had driven them over distant lands and wide seas. It had made of them something which none of them had been able to contemplate, both for good and for ill, and, as storm-wrack, they lay upon its farthest shore. If there was grief here in plenty and a lifetime of Graham Reid Malett’s ill works to be unravelled in Scotland, there was no shame in that.
Perhaps he was not formed as the horned worm of India, unable to sustain life even in others.
With a start, Jerott realised that the goblet was empty and cool beneath his fingers, the plate reduced to a scattering of crumbs and the first faint glow of dawn spilling through the high, narrow windows. The cat perched on one end of the long table, glowering at them through narrow green eyes and batting at a scrap of honeyed pastry with a desultory paw. Blinking against the sting of tears, as caustic as any poison, Jerott saw that Philippa’s lids were drooping, her chin propped on one hand and the other laid lightly on the curve of her belly suddenly revealed beneath the fine lawn of her shift where the embroidered silk of her gown had dropped away. ‘You must forgive Francis, you see,’ she said in a voice warm and soft with sleep. ‘It is difficult for him at the moment.’
‘I - yes - there is nothing to forgive,’ Jerott said, and found that he meant it. Perhaps, like the pelican, Francis would sustain these children with the last of his own heart’s blood, as he might have sustained his firstborn, were it not for Gabriel’s schemes, but the stubborn light in Philippa’s drowsy dark eyes suggested that she had decided opinions on the matter. And, with abrupt solicitude, ‘You should go to bed.’
‘A moment longer. Goo to Morpheus; thou knowist hym well.’
Rising to his feet against the protesting ache of his own muscles, he was surprised to find himself swept into a hug comprised half of peacock-embroidered silk and half of flying dark hair that filled his nose with the scent of chypre. Cautiously, he let his own arms close around Philippa and felt a great flood tide of weariness sweep over him, as if all barriers to sleep had been swept away and that welcoming sea rushed in, bearing all before it.
Disentangling himself with only a little difficult involving Philippa’s hair and the carved horn buttons fastening the sleeves of his robe, Jerott padded sleepily from the kitchen, the cat weaving lazy patterns around his bare calves.
*******************************************************
‘Well, yunitsa?’ asked the figure lounging in the entrance to the larder, a sleepy, sardonic smile crooking one corner of his long mouth and pale linen sleeves falling back from his sinewy arms as he brought his hands up to frame her face.
‘Well,’ Philippa confirmed, and pressed a kiss to the scarred wrist. ‘He’ll sleep tonight, at least. And you?’
‘I see Astraea has absented herself, so I suppose we will find ourselves the next targets of the infant’s hair-pulling fervour in far too short a time, but for now my sleep, like justice, requires a witness.’
‘Then let me be witness by sight and by sign.’ Philippa smiled up into his face, smoothing the fingers of one hand through the disordered silk of his yellow hair. ‘Come to bed, Francis. There is nothing more to put right in the world tonight.’
*******************************************************
Notes
The first three paragraphs draw heavily on the description of Jerott’s approach to Mehedia in Pawn in Frankincense, pp. 111-112.
İpec böceǧi - ‘silkworm’ in Turkish (I hope).
‘Like the silk moth which has no organs by which it can nourish itself’ - some version of this is repeated at various places in Pawn in Frankincense and also in Checkmate.
‘Mo cridh is a good little boy now’ - Pawn in Frankincense, p. 445, aka the most distressing line in the entirety of canon (and, let’s face it, there’s plenty of competition).
‘She gaue him milke, the slepe fell in his hede’ - John Lydgate, The Fall of Princes.
‘Goo to Morpheus; thou knowist hym well’ - Geoffrey Chaucer, Book of the Duchess.

The Hogwarts Gazette
I crown myself Queen of the Halloween party, a worthy win considering none of you peasants even made it close to what I achieved. Now, the runners up, or the Queen’s court if you will, are as follows.
Leighton Avery swayed her hips into the hall with a ‘B’ necklace that could have stood for ‘Bitches beware’ instead of ‘Boleyn’. The girl turned many heads with her short skirt and low-cut bodice. My Mother personally taught me the phrase ‘chest OR legs’ but clearly Leighton’s mother taught her the altered ‘Chest AND legs’. Either way, the girl made an impression, and just like the great lady herself Anne Boleyn, many of the male’s heads did indeed roll (across the room watching her).
Pandora Fortescue, or should I say Lady Selene looked like she was dripping with stars. She captured the elegance of the moon perfectly with a full-length tulle gown that almost had constellations sewn into it. The look was finished with sparkly shoes and makeup and a head piece shaped like a moon, so even the most dim-witted Hufflepuff knew what she was. If anyone came up to you with the annoying question of “so what are you supposed to be” I hope you smacked them over the face with your moon hat.
The next in line for my appraisal is one Mary Conrad. She came as the Lioness of Brittany, not that you should need reminding, the tight black corset and shiny red lips should haunt a lot of your dreams. She looked drop dead gorgeous in her outfit, plus, points for historical accuracy, some of you could take notes on how to do a historical figure correctly from Mary, you know who you are. The only thing that could have improved her look would be a grand entrance upon a ship, but she already knows that.
My next selection may cause a bit of controversy, but who am I to shy away from drama. Madeline Maestro looked like molten silver in her evening gown and diamond accessories, real diamonds, not costumes ones, please take note. Her depiction of a Veela was perfection, an already stunning girl made herself almost too desirable with the dewy makeup and alluring red lip. And yes, I am aware that she doesn’t actually attend Hogwarts, but for those that may have an issue with it, please take it up with yourself and your lacking costume rather than spamming my owlery.
The last female on my list is Astraea Burke. The younger Slytherin entered the Great hall and stole almost as much attention as I did. Her costume left us all in shock, a far cry from her couple’s costume of Babbity Rabbity and her cackling stump that she did with her brother the year before. She was covered in head to toe gold and she has never looked so good. The dress was a work of art, and her shoes, where did you get them? It was all topped off with a pair of golden wings, a girl after my own heart it would seem.
And now for the male population, Benjy Fenwick put almost as much effort into his costume as I did, and it really showed. He walked through the hallways, making the first and second years scream with fear, the mark of a truly scary Halloween costume. The all black suit and face mask paired with the hat and purposefully worn doctors bag made it known to everyone what he came as. Another perfectly executed historical costume, I applaud thee, half for the costume, and half for the scaring of little kids.
Elliott Borgin and Richard Wilkes came as a pair. They are seen almost everywhere together; it would seem even the cells of Azkaban. The pair of runaway convicts looked exceptional, going all out with fake tattoos and prison numbers. They looked the perfect mix of hot teenaged boy and ruffled bad guy that would make the lesser females swoon. I must say however, if they need a place to hide from the law, they could always use my bedroom.
It would seem the Burke siblings made the right choice to not come as a couple once again. Although he stuck to his favourite book of ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ Tristram Burke went solo this year and it worked ever so in his favour. Coming as the Warlock from the ever-loved fable ‘The Warlock’s Hairy Heart’ he looked the epitome of a true gentleman. His clearly custom-made outfit reeked of wealth and looks, luring in the entire female population of Hogwarts. The dedication he had to his look impressed me, any boy that carries around a hairy heart all evening deserves to be mentioned.
My final mention is one Landon Boot. Although the boy clearly likes drama (See Rita’s article for more) his costume was simple, dignified and executed perfectly. To the untrained eye, which is most of you, he was just a boy covered in blood, but to those superior beings, like myself it was more. The charms it took to create that never-ending stream of blood was well beyond the talents of most of you, and a pair of perfectly tailored trousers never goes amiss. The boy chose his look and did it well.
I would also like to give a special thanks to all those boys that came topless. Thank you for giving us a distraction from all those that came in a less fortunate costumes, some were truly a sight for sore eyes.
To conclude, I’m going to offer you some much needed advice, a word of caution even. To the rest of you uncultured swine’s, who clearly can’t put two items of clothing together without help, no one enjoys asking the question ‘so who are you meant to be’. Save your vague muggle references and half-arsed concepts for family gatherings, the Hogwarts Halloween party deserves better than that, come on people, we’re not at Beauxbatons, DO BETTER!

THE ZODIAC: VIRGO THE VIRGIN
Date of Rulership: 23rd August-22nd September; Polarity: Negative, female; Quality: Mutable; Ruling planet: Mercury; Element: Earth; Body part: Solar plexus and bowels; Colour: Dark brown, green; Gemstone:Sardonyx; Metal: Mercury or nickel.
Up until now, the formative forces expressed by the zodiac under the signs of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and Leo have been orientated towards the inner realm of self-expression and self-actualization, and particular an expression that doesn’t wish to be hindered by external influences or contingencies. This all changes with Virgo, a sign whose potency derives from the ethereal element of earth and mutability. Virgos are quite like a combination of metal oxides, minerals, and organic matter otherwise known as clay. They adapt quickly to the pulling, pushing, thrashing, twisting, folding, and overturning caused by the protean elements of the environment through sharpened faculties of common sense and level-headed thinking. If Virgo were a cosmic process, it would be an accelerated version of natural selection; if it were an animal, it would be a rainforest chameleon; and if it were a person, it would more than likely be a molecular biologist. The three just mentioned things partake of the same methodology when it comes to encountering reality and the world: they all start by apportioning a state, condition, or situation into its respective subcomponents; then studying the composition of each piece, its practical purpose, its relation to the other parts, and all possible forms of interaction; and finally pondering all possible outcomes and consequences should any unforeseen mechanistic failure or breakdown in communication between the parts ensue. Moreover, the mutable energies of Virgo are meticulously practical and conscientious; they will measure, demarcate, and map out their worldview before ruffling through to weed out items of information that are superfluous, insignificant, of no intellectual or creative interest, or of no practicable use. Virgo is a focused sign and sees no value in going off on wild goose chases or intellectual tangents that are merely products of curiosity rather than data aligned into a chronological tree of final causes.
Thus Virgo is the “analyst” of the zodiac, the sentient filter that gathers, stores, retrieves, analyses and prioritizes information in a mental filing system designed to sharpen the conscious will and force the ego along its chosen path and trajectory of evolution. To arrive at this state of being, Virgo had to sift through an array of primary characteristics from preceding signs and single out the ones it wanted: from Taurus it borrowed willpower, diligence, and focus; and from Cancer it acquired the desire to mother and nurture others, especially those beings that seem helpless and in need of protection or attention. Virgo’s innate tendency towards analysis, its sedate disposition, and its agenda rendered the traits of the other three signs–Aries, Gemini, and Leo–both undesirable and incompatible, and hence it bypassed the lot without a second thought.
“You know guys and girls, I’m a bit like extra virgin olive oil,” says Virgo. “I am well aware of my own composition, texture, colour, and taste. I know my own essence, what I mix well with, and what I don’t mix with at all. I can also tell you without the slightest doubt that I’m good for you, and that I probably know what’s best for you better than you do. The endeavour that we call life is best approached from an angle that involves formulating plans and putting them into action. Throw in a bit of salt and pepper in the form of self-discipline and hard work and you have a recipe for instant success and satisfaction. It’s as simple as that. Those of you who say or do otherwise are either naïve, ill-informed, delusional, or plain stupid, and you can be certain that I’ll be giving you the “I-told-you-so” lecture somewhere down the track for taking detours onto dirt roads which lead to oblivion. We never, ever let our hearts usurp the position held by our heads–this sentiment extends to all areas of life, including family, love, sex and relationships, profession and career, finance, and so forth.
In any case, if you’re not quite sure as to how the mechanics of this little secret works I’d be more than happy to forfeit some my own time and give you a demonstration. There’s nothing more satisfying than giving to a fellow projection of the conscious universe, a brother or sister, and you can be more than certain that God, salvation, and peace are to be found in such moral, selfless, and loving acts. I do have some insight into my own psychic makeup, and understand that my love of perfectionism, my sense of righteousness, and my “know-it-all” approach can intimidate, irritate, and anger others. This has nothing to do with conceit or being up myself but rather a love for the world and my devotion to it. Why can’t people wake up and realise what’s good for them I say? Why do they make the same mistakes, over and over, without learning from them? How can the most intellectual of earthly creatures be so incompetent and inefficient sometimes? We need to listen before we speak, prepare before we do battle, and look before we jump. If people adhered to these very simple guidelines, there’d be a hell of a lot less grief in the world!”
From what we can see, Virgo is obviously a reflective sign that places a colossal emphasis on education and learning. And what Virgo aptly sees in this temporal and sometimes chaotic world of change and evolution quicker than any other sign is that self-preservation is dependent upon doing things in moderation. When physical, mental or emotional energies are utilized to extremes for prolonged periods of time, the individual will manifest wear and tear that inevitably leads to burnout. The best way to avoid hitting a wall, according to Virgo, is to engage in periodic exercise, eat a nutritious diet high in protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre and coloured vegetables, and cordon off a few hours each day for solitary endeavours intended to cultivate the soul. Learning new skills and refining natural talent is way more important and meaningful to a Virgo than being a social magnet or an energy vampire. From this perspective it’s easy to see why the Virgo man or woman admires, respects and holds in the highest esteem individuals who are intellectually and academically inclined.
In neural physiology, we might align Virgo with the rational, mechanistic, and dominant scientist that lives in the left hemisphere of our brains. Like the latter, Virgo is only interested in knowledge pertaining to reality that is collected by the sense faculties and categorized through deductive reasoning. Unlike the latter though, Virgo discriminates between knowledge collected on the basis of its usefulness. If theory or knowledge cannot be applied in some concrete way to improve the present conditions of life, then there’s no point in even knowing about it. As far as Virgo is concerned, anything abstract and speculative or anything that evades human comprehension and classification is simply not worth any vested time or effort.
There are two symbols associated with Virgo the Virgin. The first is a reclining woman, an obvious allusion to the Great Mother Goddess in all her guises (i.e. the virgin, the crone, the good mother, the temptress or seductress, the whore, and so forth). She is the stellar goddess of innumerable names: for the ancient Babylonians and Assyrians she was Ishtar, the all-encompassing deity of love, war, fertility and sex; for the ancient Egyptians she found expression through the feminine triad of Nut-Hathor-Isis; for the ancient Greeks she was a triune spirit encompassing the Olympian deities Artemis, Athena, and Hestia; and for the Imperial Romans she was Ceres, the maternal goddess of agriculture, grain crops and fertility who was always depicted holding a sheaf of corn. One would have to say that the most recognized religious iconography associated with this zodiacal sign is that of the Christian Mary, the Immaculate Virgin and Queen of Heaven who brought forth the incarnation of God the Father in Jesus Christ the Son.
In classical mythology, the stellar constellation of Virgo was inextricably linked with Astraea, the goddess of justice and innocence. According to the Hellenes, there was a time when the immortals were thriving alongside the mortals on Earth. Back then the world was largely devoid of diseases, plagues, burdens, and other conditions detrimental to general health, wellbeing and contentment. This was to change with the curiosity of Pandora, who made the tragic mistake of opening a cursed box gifted to her by the immortals themselves for the sake of testing her willpower in consort with her ability to toe the line and follow simple instructions. Save for being the source of all misfortunes for mankind, Pandora also became the reason for the gods and goddesses to desert their corporeal posts. Even Astraea, the most tolerant and patient amongst them, surrendered all hope of a swift redemption for mankind and fled to the mount of heaven when she saw that the ravages of war had escalated to a degree of barbarity that left expired mercenaries without dignity. It is said that Astraea will descend from her celestial throne to Earth again when the human psyche returns to its former Adamic state of spiritualization.
The second symbol, an astrological shorthand for the zodiacal sign, looks like the small letter ‘m’ with a curved projection linking the top and bottom parts of the third leg. As a sygil, it bears a great many resemblances to two subsequent signs, Libra and Scorpio, both of which are intensely concerned with the collective social and psychospiritual evolution of humanity. On a great many occasions we find that the uroboric loop formed by the final leg is represented as a fish, the Piscean totem. Therefore we can infer that the glyph is denoting an ethereal condition where spirit or vital essence is in the process of incarnating in the dense, lower world of physical forms.
Both symbols together recall characteristics central to the Virgo archetype–discrimination, intelligence, refinement, serenity, self-control, dedication, assiduousness, orderliness, and self-discipline. Over and above the positive connotations linked to them, these qualities are typical by-products of highly evolved and spiritual states of consciousness mediated by Virgo’s formative energies. We can be certain that both signs place immense emphasis on ascension and specifically the ascension of the human soul because the totemic figure is often shown with a pair of angel wings. The position of Virgo on the great cosmic wheel also reveals that both signs have to make do with maternity and fertility, as well as the condition of having fulfilled all prerequisites leading up to any undertakings meant to test physical, psychological, or spiritual parameters.

Thy Kingdom Come
FCGCT Commentary: Mother of All Creation was Jesus as one of her last incarnations in her attempt to ascend the planet. All religious texts and scripture flipped this so that all energy would be sent to a masculine figure, a further representation of how the Cabal has attempted to write the feminine, Mother God, Source, out of their teachings.
Thy Kingdom Come
By Alison Dhuanna via Mahala’s Astrology
There has been so much incredible transformation of consciousness within humanity in the past few years it has at times been difficult to capture it in writing. Alongside these big shifts have been challenging events in Britain threatening to tear families and communities apart which have been some of the most challenging issues in terms of what to do or not do. This has mirrored the election of Trump in the USA and marks a turning point in history. It is in many ways a time to allow ourselves and others to grieve for lost worlds and ideals as we approach the Pluto Saturn conjunction in 2020.
What has been central in my world has been anchoring the 7th Violet Ray of the Atmic body (the auric ‘Thou Kingdom Come’) into the physical body – when this occurs it brings a deep sense of peace, purity of heart and stability and the more spacious thoughts of higher consciousness are able to permeate more and more of daily life.
Energy gathers around the heart centre and it becomes easier to let go of the things bothering or agitating the mind and emotions. Many people are experiencing this already and this will be accelerated at this New Moon 3rd June by the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ movement of billions of people across the globe praying for peace
At this New Moon at 12 degrees Gemini there is an alignment to Aldebaran one of the four Royal Watcher Stars. You may recall the extraordinary story of Saul who was a persecutor of the followers of Jesus and a military leader of the corrupt Roman State which had just executed him. On the road to Damascus Saul experienced an epiphany which threw him to the ground from his horse and left him blind. His healing three days later describes “scales falling from his eyes”. This is what this New Moon offers, the clarity which flows through the ‘Eye of the Bull’.
The north node is aligned with Juno, Goddess of the Sacred Marriage in watery Cancer. There are many dimensions to understand Juno, and an important one for now is to perceive her as a core energy opening the Seventh Seal of Solomon. As we approach the Mayan Day Out of Time this year it is a year of special significance for the number 7, and also there are important movements of Venus this year which resonate to the number 7 (see below for more on this)
In the past few years you will have heard me say many times that I perceive the opening of the Holy Grail codes through the conjunction of Astraea (Spear of Fire) and Hygiea (Grail Cup). Today however I want to refer to them as the energy of Communion, as an understanding and embodiment of the mysteries of the Eucharist and a profound experience of abundance and togetherness as One Body of life which transcends all religions, nations or even our planetary consciousness. At this New Moon Venus lies in Taurus between these two Goddess asteroids bringing a dancing, creative feminine energy and enhanced experience of Gaia’s profound beauty piercing our collective numbness. Together they are aligned with the Pleaides, the Seven Sisters.
Revelation 2.1–7
‘To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands:
This is a profound moment in time where the divine feminine really makes her mark, and to illuminate the way in which the Creator unfolds the great mystery I’d like to return to the story of Paul.
Having had his momentous experience, Paul sets out to be a very unexpected but effective apostle of Christ. He was a military man, so no doubt he had a very well thought out plan for the spread of these teachings across the world. Let us just remember for a moment the revolutionary nature of these teachings; every cultural norm from women’s’ position to cleanliness had been challenged by Jesus.
Paul’s plans though were changed after he had a dream and was sent instead by God to Macedonia in Greece. There by the river he met Lydia, a woman of substantial wealth and independence who traded in purple cloth. She, with her sisters regularly worshipped by a river. When Paul told her his story and that of Jesus, she became the first Apostle of the Western world in what must have been a most holy of places (there is still a church there to this day). Lydia’s story really moved me because she embodies so much of what I have come to know through so many years of struggling to embody these incredible Goddess Asteroid energies. Her sovereignty, royalty and wealth are very much resonant with Juno. Her independence and devotion very much resonate with Vesta the Priestess (in Aries at present moving into conjunction with Uranus). Her ability to take the ideas out into the world with such ease and grace really resonates with Pallas Athena (in Libra at the moment). It is not the first time Jesus takes his teachings first to women Apostles – think of Mary Magdalena at the tomb. Its quite astounding that women have been excluded from some areas of ministry for so long – though I am happy to say there is pretty much a gender balance now in the Church of England. When the male and female work together with dignity and respect miracles happen and this it seems from the story of Lydia, was always God’s plan. We have been wondering around in the desert for a long time figuring that out it seems. The Goddess Asteroids are the heavenly bodies which in some mysterious way transmit these ways of being to us.
Time as we know is fractal and holographic, and I feel a great deal may be learnt from how things have unfolded before and these patterns repeat themselves down the ages. Christ consciousness is here among, it is the Communion and feeling of deep belonging in the web of life.
In this next week as part of the Global Thy Kingdom Come movement, I would like to invite you to pray for 5 people every day who you would like to know the compassion and true nature of the Creator; for the scales to fall from their eyes. We can create amazing synergy in this way in the web of life and praying for others is one of the best ways I have experienced of truly connecting with the suffering and experience of humanity, and not getting too caught up in our own emotional turmoil. These prayers may be body prayers or art works, poems or stories.
Above is a painting I did of Lydia’s baptism with her sisters and the second painting below that was swimming in an Iodine infinity pool recently and feeling a complete sense of surrender and the Aqua ray of this feeling of “communion”. I’ve heard of a few others experiencing this Aqua ray recently and I feel it is very much connected to this new level of energy anchoring heaven to earth, all around and everywhere in the web of life. The number of Christ Consciousness is 33, another number which may pop up for you this year.

🚌 and 🥀 for astraea, marie, val, and sybil please!
🚌 - what haunts your muse? is there any event in your muse’s past that they can’t move past?
astraea is haunted by her childhood, and can't really move past that. the memories with her principal and her father just really formed who she is; and also she never got apologies from them, so she's really holding on to that.
marie is rarely someone who lives in regrets, however her pregnancy scare is something that shaped who she is and how she approaches intimacy with other people, so I would have to say that.
val can't really move past failing the matron the first time around, and she's terrified of what's going to happen this time if she fails. (she's also terrified of what happens if she's successful — like if she succeeds at beating the giants at their own game, then what happens to her? will she remain on this plane or be sucked back into the shadowfell? who knows! not her! and that scares her!)
sybil's heartbreak at the cause of their patron is something they can't quite get past, I would think. it motivated them to leave the feywild in the first place and pursue planar magics, so i think that would be the catalyst for the rest of their life, that they can't really move past because it put them on the path they're currently on.
🥀 - what are your muse’s standards for a romantic partner? are they realistic? why do they have these standards?
astraea prefers a woman who can keep her grounded and accept her as she is, which is (prior to rafa) not something that she had ever really thought would exist for her. i think she has these standards because she was never really accepted by her family nor by society at large when she was growing up, so it makes sense that she would try to treat that wound with seeking it out in adult relationships.
marie wasn't looking for anyone to be her romantic partner until james entered her life and then suddenly there was another person who mattered to her. a golden retriever gamer boy, perhaps, but still - someone who mattered to her. i think she wanted to remain by herself as a protective measure - and after seeing her parents love story, she wasn't sure there was really anything that could compare to that. but now she has james and everything's perfect.
val is demi which heavily influences those she can think about in a romantic context. for her, romance and sex are inseparable, and she can't picture romantic notions without sexual ones following or preceding. with that being said she enjoys someone who is competent in their chosen field, challenges her to be better, and is there to help her when she's feeling down, whether it be quiet contemplation or raucous laughter. she's got these standards from looking at marriage a thousand years ago and thinking that's what it has to be like nowadays too - and instead, she's found herself as far from conventional as she can.
sybil's romantic needs are varied, and it depends on the person that they're finding romantic notions with. with their patron, there was always a degree of worship that isn't going to be present in mortal relationships. i think they want someone they can dote on and take care of, while also keeping them in their place, iykwim 😌

Do I have a favorite.... well, I mean, I MIGHT be a little bias toward Thomas and Alex! Just a little... a healthy amount... yeah, let's just say that lol
After Thomas and Alex, Bryce and Olivia jumped to #2 with Mal and Daenarya at #3.
In the future, I'd be interested in writing M!Trystan x F!MC, and maybe Immortal Desires (though how does one pick between M and F Cas! Both is good!!!)
I have an idea for an OTP3 with Mal x Daeny and Nia which I'd be interested in writing. bUt who knows.
I also had plans at one point to write Zaid x Ines and Baz and a F!OC, as well as Maxwell x F!OC, but who knows if or when any of those will ever come about.
Anyway! Thanks again for hosting this event and for being such (a) lovely host(s) by keeping people engaged by asking questions. Love this event idea so much!

Was Mary, the mother of Jesus, based on the Egyptian Goddess Isis? Um, NO, and here is why.
Isis was a major goddess in the ancient world, being first worshipped before 3000 BC. Originally worshipped in Egypt, Isis later attained a following in other cultures, including the Roman Empire. Her cult became one of the “Mystery Religions” during the Christian era, one of the competitors of early Christianity.
She was often depicted holding her infant son Horus (though Horus in ancient Egypt was most often depicted as an adult). It is believed by scholars that her cult and some of her iconography (mother and child depiction) were adopted by Christianity to a certain extent, though instead of venerating Isis, of seeing her as the ideal mother, they venerated Mary and saw her as the ideal mother. This would have been a very useful tactic to lure pagans in the Isis cult away (Just as St. Patrick took the Irish pagan sun symbol (a circle), put it with a cross, and thus made the Celtic Cross, a symbol the Irish could rally behind (remember, the symbol of the cross in no way derived from the Irish Sun Symbol). This, among other things, led to the end of the cult of Isis (though she has made a comeback in neo-pagan circles).
However, it must be stressed that, though the Virgin Mary was used to help win converts from the cult of Isis, she is NOT (repeat: not) considered a goddess. We must also remember that it is one thing to say that the early Church used Mary as a replacement for Isis, but quite another to say that she was actually derived from Isis. Indeed, do we say that Jesus was derived from Jupiter (the King of the Roman Gods), because the church, through evangelism, made Jesus a replacement for him? Do we say that the cross was an invention of the pagan Irish, because it was used by St. Patrick to replace their simple circle of the sun symbol? Are we going to say that the Bible was based on the works of Homer and Plato, because it replaced them as THE texts of the western world (The Bible is not one book, but a library of ancient texts)? Indeed, why would a devout Jewish sect take a pagan goddess and turn it into a first century Jewish woman?
Still, Jesus Mythicists will insist that Mary was a fictional character based on Isis. Well, let’s see how wrong they really are, and to do so, we need to compare both.
First, let’s look at Isis.
Isis was a mother goddess who, like an angel, was depicted with wings. She was the daughter of the god Geb and the Goddess Nut, one of a set of quadruplets or quintuplets, depending on the version of the myth (her siblings being Osiris, the Elder Horus (not to be confused with the more popular Horus. In some versions he is not her brother), Nephthys and Seth). Isis and Osiris had SEX…while still in the womb.
You heard me, Ron. In some accounts, this is how the elder Horus was conceived and born. Isis eventually married Osiris (while outside the womb) and…well, what happens on a wedding night? What do married couples um, do now and again? Hint:
Later, Seth kills Osiris, only for Isis to resurrect him. While he is resurrected, Isis and Osiris have (guess. GUESS!)...SEX!
Who would have thought?
Thus, Horus the younger, the more famous Horus…was conceived.
In another account, Isis conceived Horus by means of a divine fire, but this still doesn’t change the uncomfortable fact that Isis and Osiris had sex before they were ever born, and no doubt would have sex while married.
Jesus Mythicists will protest, saying that a relief on the Luxor Temple in Egypt shows that Isis was a virgin. Well…no. There is no such inscription. They also try to make a connection between Isis and the constellation Virgo (meaning “virgin”) but this also fails. Because, you see, though Isis was connected to the constellation Virgo… the reason why we call it Virgo or “The Virgin” is because we refer to constellations by the names that the Greeks and Romans gave them. They, not the Egyptians, called it Virgo. Indeed, the reason why the Greeks called it that is because they thought it was the goddess Astraea, the winged Virgin goddess of justice. She grew tired of humanity’s sinful ways and decided to leave the world behind, thus rising into the heavens and becoming the constellation Virgo.
Though both Isis and Astraea were both winged and goddesses, they otherwise have little, if anything, in common. They’re about as similar as The Incredible Hulk and Wonder Woman (who are both comic book characters and have superhuman strength. Like Astraea and Isis, they have two things in common, so they must be the same hero, right????????).
If the US called the Big Dipper constellation “The Incredible Hulk” and Greece called it “Wonder Woman”...would that mean that Wonder Woman becomes a giant green skinned monster if she gets angry, and was a nuclear physicist who gained her powers when exposed to Gamma Radiation? Would it mean that the Incredible Hulk is an Amazon from Themyscira who flies, has an invisible plane, a rope that makes people tell the truth and wears a bra?
Would it make the Hulk a DC comics character?
Would it make Wonder Woman a Marvel comics character?
Then why would the fact that Isis and Astraea were both identified with the constellation Virgo...prove that Isis is a virgin?
Heck, though the constellation “Ursa Major” is seen as a bear, the most visible part of it is called the “Big Dipper”, referring to a long-handled cup.
What similarities do bears and dippers have?
Well, both are physical...and both are found on earth...so I guess that both bears and dippers are used by people to dip with? Or that dippers, like bears, hibernate and are mammals?
Indeed, the Big Dipper is also called “Wagon” or “Saucepan:, “plough”, etc. Does this mean that all of these latter things are designed to dip?
Likewise, to say that Isis was a virgin, because she was associated with a constellation that the Greeks thought represented one of their virgin goddesses, would be like saying that Osiris was a giant hunter, because he was associated with the constellation Orion, whom the Greeks identified with the giant hunter named …Orion! So I guess we are free to fudge the facts and combine Osiris and Orion into a hybrid known as “Osirion”, the giant hunter god who is killed by a conspiracy of Seth and Artemis (using a scorpion, in some versions an arrow), only to physically resurrect and become the constellation Orion!
Trying to take aspects of a Greek goddess identified with the constellation Virgo and apply them to Isis, because she is also identified with Virgo, makes a grave, grave error (especially when we consider the fact that both are from different religious traditions).
Indeed, the Greeks didn’t identify Virgo with just Astraea : they also identified it with Dike (a goddess of justice who, to be fair, was identified with Astraea and who was also claimed to be a virgin, though in another version of her myth, she was the mother of the goddess Hesykhia) and Persephone, who of course was NO virgin (she was the wife of Hades. Oh and BTW: in the Orphic tradition, Zeus raped her while in the form of a snake).
So…are we going to say that Isis was a goddess of justice who was kidnapped by Hades (who married her (she was already married to Osiris, making our hypothetical Isis a bigamist) and was raped by Zeus in the form of a serpent? Most would consider this to be an absurd description of Isis.
Therefore…why borrow mythological details from Astraea and give them to Isis, especially when the Egyptian myths make clear that Isis was having sex before she was even born???
Thus, Isis was no Virgin.
She was however a great teacher, helping to civilize Egypt and teaching people the art of medicine. She even brought the concept of marriage to humanity.
Now…let’s look at Mary.
Mary was a peasant Jewish woman who lived from the late 1rst century BC to the early 1rst century AD. Like other Jewish women, when she was a girl, her marriage would have been arranged by both her family and that of her potential groom (in this case Joseph). Jewish marriages would have been generally arranged while the potential couple was still young. Once the arrangement was made, the couple was betrothed, which was more binding than our modern engagements (if you wanted to break off a betrothal in ancient Israel, you had to get a divorce (Matt 1:19)). Once a girl had her first period, wedding planning would commence (remember this point). Girls usually got their first periods around 13-14, though considering that the legal age for marriage in ancient Israel was 13 for boys and 12 for girls, sometimes this happened even earlier. Considering that Mary went through an entire pregnancy during her betrothal, and that she had been betrothed to Joseph before she became pregnant (Luke 1:26-30), this would lead us to the startling conclusion that Mary hadn’t had her period yet when she became pregnant. Now, it is possible for a girl to get pregnant right before her first period (due to ovulation occurring before periods, the first being no different). Keep in mind, such pregnancies are rare), but not only is the period between ovulation and periods roughly two weeks (with ranges anywhere from 7 to 19 days), the time between the beginning of puberty and a girl’s first period is usually 2 years. Thus, for nearly two years after the onset of puberty, a girl is usually incapable of getting pregnant.
Why are these biological facts important?
Rashi, a Medieval rabbi whose commentaries on both the Bible and the Talmud have left a great influence on Judaism, noted that some scholars believed that the mother in Isaiah 7:14 (the passage that foretells the virgin birth of Christ) was “a young girl and incapable of giving birth.”
In other words, a girl too young to have a baby.
Taken together with the New Testament story of the Annunciation, this would imply that Mary conceived either during the early stages of puberty before ovulation occurs, or even before she reached puberty. Considering that the Hebrew word translated as virgin in the passage (Almah) both refers to a female adolescent and originates from a Semitic root that refers to entering puberty (in other cases an animal coming into heat), the former would be the correct conclusion. Mary became pregnant before it was naturally possible for her to be pregnant.
Thus, the virgin aspect of Christ's conception wasn't the only miracle mentioned in Isaiah 7:14.
Given all of this, we can conclude that Mary could have been in her teens, or even 11 or 12, when she became pregnant with Christ (remember, the legal age of marriage was 12, not the legal age of betrothal). And remember, even at the time of Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph were still betrothed (Luke 2:1-7).
Mary was a biblical hero of faith. Later, she was said to appear in visions and perform other miracles, but these beliefs and reports post-dates the New Testament (Mary performs no miracles in the New Testament). So…what do Isis and Mary have in common? 1. Having children at an early age?
Only in some versions of her myth is Isis claimed to have gotten pregnant with the elder Horus while still in the womb. In others, she only gave birth to Horus the Younger, and this occurred after Isis and Osiris were adults. Mary certainly had Jesus at an early age, but this parallels Isis only in some myths, and nowhere (I repeat NOWHERE) near enough to show that Mary was based on Isis. 2. Virgin mother?
Mary was a virgin mother. Isis was not. Even in accounts where she was impregnated with Horus by means of a divine fire, she still had a track record of having something we like to call SEX.
3. Were both winged? No. Mary wasn’t a mutant.
4. Both goddesses? No. Mary was mortal.
5. Both performed miracles?
Mary was said to have performed miracles…in tales and reports that post-date the New Testament.
7. Both taught civilization, medicine and instituted marriage? No, these things happened long before Mary was born.
8. One of a set of quadruplets or quintuplets? We have no evidence showing that Mary was one of a set of quadruplets or quintuplets.
9. Resurrected the dead?
No, Mary did not. Her son, however did.
10. Both called "Mary"? Though Jesus mythicists will claim that Isis was also called "Meri" or "Isis Meri", there is no evidence of this.
11. Immortality? Like every other human, only Mary’s spirit or soul is immortal. Her body was not, and she passed away in the first century AD. Isis, being a goddess, was considered immortal. Oh, and keep in mind: Mary is from a Jewish Background, while Isis is from a far older Polytheistic background. We need to consider Christianity’s Jewish context, not pagan myth, in order to better understand Mary.
So…what do they really have in common???
Hardly anything.
Now remember: the novella “Futility/Wreck of the Titan had numerous, numerous similarities with the Titanic disaster, which occurred 14 years later. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket” has numerous similarities with the Mignonette sinking, and of course, Alexander the Great has more than thirty similarities with the mythic Achilles. Nobody honestly believes that Alexander the Great, the Mignonette disaster and the Titanic disaster were fictional tales based on earlier works of fiction. And yet…we are supposed to believe that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a fictional character based on the Egyptian Goddess Isis...even though their so-called parallels are practically non-existent???????
No, Mary wasn’t based on Isis.
She was the flesh and blood historical mother of the historical flesh and blood Jesus Christ, the savior of mankind.
Case closed.

Talking Christ #2
𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗕𝗬 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗜𝗥𝗖𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟
𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗔𝗡 𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗫 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗞𝗜𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗧
Kiersten Fraust: Welcome back to Talking Christ, ladies and gentlemen! And we're here again in our lovely squared circle confidential studio ready to talk about the going ons on the first episode of CCW. The name alone is a topic worth discussing, but we have a great show to talk about, right Logan?
Logan Fenix: It was something, plenty of crazy things happened throughout the show and it was truly some edge of your seat content.
Kiersten Fraust: Not only that. We also have a very special guest that will be joining us later on in the show.
Logan Fenix: And that special guest may have a surprise of her own, I have it on good authority she came with a plus one, Kiersten! A plus one! But first, where do we start with episode one, Everytime We Meet at the Wrestling Ring Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes? What a title.
Kiersten Fraust: It's unique, I will say that. Personally, it's one of my favorite episode titles for a show. Everytime We Meet at the Wrestling Ring Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes just really gets in your face and screams, you know?
Logan Fenix: I think it was named after Winters’s head nearly exploding at Greatest Wrestling With Christ, but anyway, we opened up strong with Chellsea and Daequan announcing themselves in charge of the show… and then came Anwar and Chellsea had an interesting stipulation for his upcoming Saudi Arabia Championship match, too.
Kiersten Fraust: I just have to say that Chellsea was bringing the slay in her outfit. Now, the Saudi Arabia championship may or may not be changed to the CCW television championship this upcoming show. Will Anwar win and the championship name remains or he loses and the championship changes. Pretty high stakes for the championship Anwar carries so proudly.
Logan Fenix: Then, of course, you can’t forget the strange situation with Neve Marx seemingly being abandoned by Astraea, who had been watching her back for the debuting Rimadonna. Astraea seems apologetic but, Rima not so much… that might all come to a head soon.
Kiersten Fraust: Well, Astraea asked for some time in the ring to apologize to Neve and if you think she's truly sorry then I'll give her a chance. It wasn't really cool of Astaea to leave Neve hanging like she did after the fact that she had her back. As how you are... what do you make of the whole situation?
Logan Fenix: I think Neve is a good girl and good girls are boring. Remember, Astraea was one of the most vicious competitors we’d ever seen and now with her makeshift alliance with Neve… that had sort of lapsed. I think Rimadonna appearing when she did is good, and I hope we see the vicious Astraea again, not the boring ‘friend’ Astraea.
Kiersten Fraust: To me, Astraea is being who she is all this time. We wanted to believe that Astraea was being good because she wanted to genuinely help Neve, but since Rimadonna showed up, she's just been helping herself. And I know she owes nothing to Neve but show a little class once in awhile.
Logan Fenix: We’ll agree to disagree and go to the featured contest, which was Santana Johnson vs. Jason Van Owen vs. Lisa Seldon in a stabbing match, which, did not work how you’d think. The person who was stabbed the most actually won… why did they just not stab anybody and draw? We may never know, but this was… another strange contest, Kiersten. Put it into words, do it.
Kiersten Fraust: I never thought I would ever be saying a stabbing match in my life, but I keep having firsts when it comes to CCW. Obviously I will never forget what I watched that night. It was literally a bloodbath of stab wounds and complete chaos.
Logan Fenix: 174 stab wounds and somehow, Santana is still alive. He is a tough son of a gun for sure.
Kiersten Fraust: Santana's been around a very long time doing what he does, I'm sure he's use to it. From one extreme to the next, we saw the golden ticket champion and championship on the first episode. It was unusual than most of the ways some people won the championship. Rivers was mauled by many cats until Belle Valentine found a hose and sprayed them.... Please stop me now.
Logan Fenix: Somehow Allister got the title though, somehow. Evil cats. As if we don’t have enough to worry about… then, of course, we have the announcement of Winter Drell’s newest opponent. Tedmund Montgomery, who is clearly looking to clean up what he perceives as indecency here in CCW.
Kiersten Fraust: I like him. Tedmund seems like a stand-up guy who wants what is best for the business. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the girl power and Winter has been killing it but maybe her time with the CCW championship will come to an end. That is always the possibility and it’s strong.
Logan Fenix: I think Winter has proven herself to be a dominant force, she’s overcome the first CCW Heavyweight Champion in Constantine Jr. She’s overcome Jacob Kuntz. She’s overcome all of the American Pain Experience. Tedmund has an uphill fight for sure.
Kiersten Fraust: No one is selling Winter short. She has done it all and has beaten them all for sure. It's gonna be a great match that I can’t wait to see.
Logan Fenix: And then at the end, Lisa Seldon just like, left Santana to be eaten by zombies as he begged for help and screamed about his fear of heights. Jason Van Owen also died, rest in peace.
Kiersten Fraust: Lisa really did leave Santana with his fears. But yeah, R.I.P. Jason Van Owen... unless he's like a super serial slasher monster and we all think he's dead and he's really not. I mean it could happen since all this other insane stuff happening in CCW.
Logan Fenix: It probably will… but that’s our recap for the show, other than that. Tune in to episode 2 of CCW TV, and of course, catch the premiere of Christ Centered Combat on Grapstream a swell… now, I think we can get to our guests, right?
Kiersten Fraust: Oh yes! My favorite part of the show. Please welcome the beautiful and distinguished, Angel McMaster.
Angel McMaster emerges from the back but then her father comes strutting out the only way Mitch McMaster knows how. Shortly they join Kiersten and Logan at the table exchanging pleasantries and getting comfortable.
Kiersten Fraust: It's great to have you two here. Mitch, welcome back to the show.
Mitch McMaster: Oh honey, call me daddy, please. Mitch is so formal.
He winked at Kiersten as he sat by Angel, adjusting himself in his seat, trying not to show any sort of weird old man bulges.
Angel McMaster: What my dad was trying to say is that it's great to be back, right? Because I'm very happy that I was invited to the show.
Mitch McMaster: She should have been invited a long time ago, my baby girl is the best of all time for a reason.
Logan Fenix: She’s certainly getting up there, even with a recent string of bad luck against the current Christcore Champion.
Angel McMaster: You like to forget a lot, Logan. Did everyone erase the time C.J. spent in WEW? I mean she would be the one with the bad luck if it took me six or seven years to win my first championship, too. But you'll just sweep everything under the rug and that's fine. C.J. got the better of me and I will not challenge for the Christcore championship again. That just means I get to move up the ladder a little bit more.
Logan Fenix: But the ladder is pretty full, Angel. Tedmund has been announced as next in line, are you saying you want I guess… in the line up with everyone else? Willie Pete and Jacob Kuntz have also been arguing about being in the line too… and Deirdre Evans has made some of her intentions clear, too. You’re painting a target on yourself.
Mitch McMaster: She’s always had a target, she’s a McMaster, but you will all marvel at her when she ascends to the top where she belongs. Just watch and be amazed.
Angel McMaster: You see, I'm gonna do whatever the hell I want. Not because I can get away with it and not because Mitch McMaster is my father... I'm gonna do it because I feel like it. Tedmund, Willie, Pete, Jacob, Mary, Joseph, Paul. No one can stop me because they'll do what mostly everyone else does, and that's overlook someone. The way I see it- that's an opportunity right there.
Kiersten Fraust: You've seen the dominance of the current Champion and the ones who are vying for the same championship. How do you plan on getting your name into that conversation?
Angel McMaster: You'll have to tune into the show in a few days to find that out.
Mitch McMaster: But that show is then, and you honey…
Mitch pointed to Kiersten, a smirk on his lips.
Mitch McMaster: You are invited to a show, TONIGHT. The Mitch McMaster show. I’m gonna show you what a Modern Marvel can do.
He slid his arms around Kiersten who was giving Logan a look like ‘help’.
Logan Fenix: You kids have fun.
Kiersten Fraust: I, uhmm... busy tonight. I gotta feed my dog.
Angel rolls her eyes annoyed.
Angel McMaster: Before I was so rudely interrupted by Kiersten trying to pick up my dad, when the second show of CCW comes around you’ll definitely know what my intentions are. Everyone better watch out.
Mitch McMaster: We’ll talk later about you bein’ my 44th wife, Kiersten. My daughter is trying to illuminate the world so let her shine. Keep going baby.
Logan Fenix: Yeah does your perversion know no bounds, Kiersten? Hold it in.
Angel McMaster: A very wise man once shouted into the camera back in the day, McMaster spells disaster for you.
Mitch McMaster: You god damn right.
Angel McMaster: Is that good enough for you?
Angel looks Kiersten in the eyes as her dad nearly had her in a headlock. She drops the microphone on the surface of the table before getting up and walking away.
Kiersten Fraust: That's it for us. Until next time.
The show comes to an end.

Ellen Page Talks LGBTQ Fundraising, Not Watching Movies
Actress and social activist Ellen Page recently witnessed history repeating itself while revisiting acclaimed classic Casablanca. Page noted the 1942 film’s eerie modern-day relevance, “the Nazi presence, but the sort of neutrality of people,” while watching the fraught and tense events – as well as “the romanticism of sacrifice” – unfold as Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine, former freedom fighter and nightclub owner in Casablanca, protects his old flame, Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa, and her husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) from Nazis. What stood out after taking another look at director Michael Curtiz’s WWII-set romantic drama: “You have these scenes in this cafe where they’re being shown respect because there’s these officials, even though, needless to say, they’re completely disagreeing.”
Page and writer-filmmaker Jason Reitman, who directed the actress in her Oscar-nominated breakout role in 2007’s Juno, set out to reimagine Casablanca for our Trump-led times, which are similarly fraught and tense for those desperately seeking life in America – and for disenfranchised groups already there. Simply titled Live Read of Casablanca and part of the Live Read Series, this is what Casablanca looks like in 2018 thanks to the diversified scope of Page and Reitman’s Dec. 13 live-read of the classic film at Los Angeles’s Ace Theater: female-led, and very queer. Before the event, a benefit for Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, a philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQ human rights around the globe, Page was eager to perform with an “inclusive” cast who are “fucking awesome.”
“It’s one of the most iconic love stories with some of the most memorable lines of any film ever,” says the 31-year-old actress by phone. “It just seems perfect to sort of recreate it in the way that we are.”
Live-streaming future reads to reach a larger audience is a “good suggestion,” she acknowledged, but for now, “I really encourage people to go to (Astraea’s) website and learn more about their work and what they do, and if they’re able to support in any way at all that would obviously be really amazing.”
Page’s queering and feminizing of Casablanca marches in line with a Hollywood movement bending to minorities as they occupy the narratives of famed and noteworthy but classically cisgender, straight, white works, from the all-black cast remake of Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias to the Latinx-led One Day at a Time, on Netflix, and women taking on roles first depicted by men in Ocean’s 8 and Ghostbusters. “In some ways, people are almost just realizing it,” Page remarks on efforts to portray underrepresented minorities on screen. She says, until recently, the “privileged” American public (see: white people) “haven’t been cognizant” of giving every kind a seat at the table.
Page, who came out in 2014 and married professional dancer and fellow Canadian Emma Portner in 2018, is forthright about the lack of diversity in some of her own films.
“A movie like Whip It, you know, should be more queer,” she says, blatantly. “It’s just that simple.”
youtube
Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It featured Page as Bliss Cavendar, a Texan teenager living in a fictional town called Bodeen and joining a roller derby team, which includes derby girls played by Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Eve and Juliette Lewis. “It wasn’t a realistic reflection of the derby world, and I wish that was different,” the actress says. “I love that film, just wanna be clear. Love that film, had a fucking blast, met two of my best friends in the universe on the film. But yeah, of course looking back on that, that’s a bummer.”
Released in 2009 by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Page adds, “It’s a reflection of the time. I’d like to think that it would be different now, and I think it actually does show not much has changed, but some things have.”
As demonstrated in recent years, it’s not too late for past works on the wrong side of diversity, so perhaps the unrealistically heterosexual-laden Whip It could be remedied: “If you made a sequel, I would love it,” Page enthuses. “I wish there was a Whip It 2, and she was lesbian.” She giggles, delighted by the thought. “And living in Austin.”
Cut on roles in 2005’s Hard Candy and Juno, Page’s career has dipped into multiple genres: high-budget thrill rides (two X-Men films, Inception), zombie dramas heavy on queer subtext (The Cured), and gay-themed true stories. In the 2015 lesbian biopic Freeheld, Page portrayed Stacie Andree, the partner of Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), a gay police officer who fought to have her pension benefits transferred to Andree after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Early the following year, the actress’ collaboration with gay friend and co-host Ian Daniel, Viceland’s Gaycation, aired. The show had the activists traveling to countries like Japan, Brazil and Jamaica to investigate the horrific challenges and distinct cultural characteristics of being LGBTQ abroad.
After two seasons, the show returned in April 2017 for a special presentation that examined LGBTQ life in America post Trump. No more episodes are planned, Page apologetically reveals, but she and Daniel are in the early development stages of “a different project that’s similar,” but “less in terms of a travel show, more focused stories.” She adds, “Not that they’ll be in America, by any means.”
Looking back on Gaycation, Page was humbled by the experience, which she says “changed me.” “I mean, you’re meeting people who, every day, are risking their lives, are activists spending their lives doing that, and sacrifice so much to do that. That’s a level of bravery and courage that I’d like to think I’m capable of, but I’m probably not.”
Meeting transgender activist and famed Stonewall rioter Miss Major for the first season’s finale was an unforgettable moment for the actress when thinking of “a force and a person who is someone who’s ultimately been responsible for so much change for the community.”
After Gaycation, Page has continued to tackle projects that are extensions of her own lesbian identity, such as this year’s The Cured, an allegorically queer zombie film from out filmmaker David Freyne. Recent LGBTQ films evade her simply because “I’ve, like, literally barely watched movies. It’s been a problem.” She immediately retracts: “Not a problem – but the last year or two, quite frankly, I don’t know, but just for some reason I haven’t really watched movies.” Apologizing for missing this year’s impressive slate of LGBTQ films (she did ask for recommendations), Page says she thoroughly enjoyed the “stunning” Tomboy, a 2011 French drama she says is still fresh on her mind.

Seemingly more queer-content creator than consumer, she just wrapped shooting the revival of Armistead Maupin’s 1993 TV adaptation of his Tales of the City books, where she joins original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis in the 10-part Netflix series, due in 2019. Page refrained from sharing specific details as requested by showrunners, but Netflix’s contemporary Tales is set 20 years later, as Mary Ann (Linney) returns to San Francisco to her ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross) and daughter Shawna (Page), as well as Anna Madrigal (Dukakis) and a motley crew of other 28 Barbary Lane residents.
“I have a love interest, played by Zosia Mamet,” Page says of her co-star, best known for her role on HBO’s Girls. “Zosia’s amazing. She absolutely blew me away. I had such a wonderful time working with her. She is such a phenomenal actor, so yeah, that was awesome.”
And acting alongside Dukakis and Linney: “It’s crazy, right? Yeah, walking in and working with someone like Laura Linney, who is absolutely one of my favorites of all time – and, of course, Olympia – I felt so welcomed,” she says. “You couldn’t be working with more lovely, sincere, they-do-this-job-because-they-just-fucking-love-it (people).”
Says Page, “It’s about connecting with another actor, not to sound all actor-y and cheesy, but that is such a joy, to be in an environment like that. So to have the opportunity to be able to work with someone like Laura, and to be a part of this in terms of the stories and the narratives and the representation, yeah, I feel very lucky that I was included.”

2 for astraea, marie, and 4 for astraea, faelan, lyssa, nimue, sable, marie, bear, novix, oberon pretty please! for the fairy ask!
When picking a suitor, would you test their wit, their intelligence or their kindness? (Bonus: how?)
Astraea: she would absolutely test for wit, because she's fine being the smart one in the relationship, but if you can't go toe-to-toe with her with snark, she's not going to be all that interested. she'd test with banter, and seeing how well it goes
Fáelán: kindness is the test she embodies, since she has truly so many qualities that can be seen as infuriating or annoying, but the aspect she would consciously test for is intelligence, just from having conversations with the person about real world things that are important and seeing how well they can keep up - but if their answers are cruel or rude, clearly they aren't that smart, since she does not value those aspects
Lyssa: she'd test for intelligence out of a need for someone to balance her out. she's insightful and good with people, but she wants someone who can keep up with her. she doesn't particularly care if she has a kind mate or not - if she's picking a suitor, then it's an arrangement and she has little choice in the matter
Nimue: kindness, and intelligence of the self-awareness kind. like, are you aware that there's other people around you that may be coming from different places in this world, and are you treating them kindly when the system is not?
Sable: intelligence, although the things sable values as being intelligent are different from what most people would value as intelligent, so there may be some disconnect there
Marie: wit, because she refuses to have dry and boring conversations with men who think they're better than her. there would be a lot of back handed compliments and comments
Bear: kindness, absolutely. how you treat others who can do nothing for you says more about you than the books you've read or the banter you can espouse
Novix: wit, for similar reasons to marie - he just doesn't want to be taken advantage of by a dull brute, and if they can't keep up with him, then he'll use it to his advantage
Oberon: intelligence, because that is what one should value. they can make something work with wit or kindness of various degrees, but intelligence is what they would search for

New Moon in Gemini, June 2019 ~ Thy Kingdom Come
New Moon in Gemini, June 2019 ~ Thy Kingdom Come
By Alison Dhuanna
