Some fic-art wips and yapping for you today <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been re-editing my early chapters of my ongoing Arcane story A Second Too Late while I work on making a fic guide for myself to make updating easier on myself.
The story is at just under 100,000 words of posted material so far, and it's just gotten to be too much to go back and reread every time I work on something new for it - and I felt like too many details/small plots were going to accidentally be forgotten.
Tumblr media
Now I have all my characters organized in order of appearance (Canon characters on the left, OCs on the right)
AND I've been working on doing character portraits (particularly for the OCs) as well as chapter-specific notes on each character when an important event/plot happens with them.
Example of the character portraits:
Tumblr media
I also have all the chapters broken down scene-by-scene, and any extra art I want to make upon editing gets it's own reference/planning sub-board as well >:3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been doing the thumbnails mostly in my sketchbook and finishing them off digitally which has been a really gratifying experience tbh, I really love doing my sketches tiny and in mechanical pencil bc it gives me the looseness and texture I love while stopping me from going to detail-heavy (bc small) & redrawing 40-billion times (bc tradtional).
Below is an example of the thumbnail sketches vs. the base lines :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just moved into a new place, and I don't have a monitor that displays color well, so I've been firmly in the b&w/lineart space with digital work right now, but I'm actually grateful for it bc it's forcing me to slow down and not hyper-focus on any one particular piece.
Idk how many chapters will have art, but I'm having fun with it for now hehe
Sometimes I get kind of down on myself for how slow I can be at updating, but something (I can't even remember what atm it's 3 a.m. rn lmao) resparked the feeling of happy fandom warm-fuzzies I had for years and years, and I just - this is fun. I'm so grateful this is like... a thing, you know?? Ik the internet can be A Lot esp. with the large influx of ppl into the community who haven't learned the culture yet but... idk I'm just feeling... happy about making things again in a very familiar way I had been chasing the last couple months.
Anyways, all this bts work has been a massive undertaking, but I'm really glad I've been putting in the time to do it. I think it's going to make the story a lot better, even besides all the personal perks for my own writing convenience.

Avery's Law makes organ, tissue donation automatic in New Brunswick — with some exceptions
Avery's Law makes organ, tissue donation automatic in New Brunswick — with some exceptions Province becomes 2nd jurisdiction in Canada after N.S. to move to this model Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon - CBC News Posted: June 19, 2023 Last Updated: June 19, 2023 1023401719 In New Brunswick, 65 people are on the wait-list for an organ donation. (MAD.vertise/Shutterstock) New Brunswick has become the second jurisdiction in Canada to adopt a presumed consent model for organ and tissue donation. Under amendments to the Human Tissue Gift Act passed last week, most New Brunswickers 19 and older will automatically be presumed to agree to donate their organs and tissues when they die — unless they opt out, also known as deemed consent. People with an intellectual disability will be exempt, along with anyone who has lived in the province for less than a year. ADVERTISEMENT It's expected to take at least two years before the new system can be implemented, the Department of Health has said. Under the current system, New Brunswickers who want to donate their organs and tissues have to check the appropriate box when they apply for or renew their Medicare card. 'Very good news' The new law is "very good news for New Brunswick," according to Dr. Rémi LeBlanc, head of intensive care at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton, and an organ donation physician. He believes it will increase the number of organs available for transplants and significantly decrease the number of people who die waiting. "The more potential donors we have, the more lives we save," said LeBlanc. "It will make a big difference." Dr. Rémi LeBlanc, head of ICU, Dr. Georges L. Dumont University Hospital Centre, organ donation doc Dr. Rémi LeBlanc, an organ donation physician in Moncton, contends the majority of New Brunswickers support organ donation but many haven't gotten around to signing their donor card. (Nicolas Steinbach/Radio-Canada) There are 65 New Brunswickers currently on the wait-list for transplants. ADVERTISEMENT Across Canada, out of the 4,400 people waiting for an organ donation, 250 people die each year. "What the new law will change on a daily basis is that everyone will be considered a potential donor in the event of a neurological tragedy leading to brain death and a declaration of physical death, according to very rigorous criteria," LeBlanc said in French. "It can also affect a neurological trauma without brain death, but with a patient in a vegetative state. We can then have the agreement of the family if the death occurs within a reasonable time." * *N.B. parents push for organ bill to pass after son died waiting 18 years for transplant * Ninety per cent of citizens are in favour of organ donation, but only 25 to 30 per cent have signed their donor card, said LeBlanc. An organ donor can save up to eight lives and their tissue can improve the lives of another 75 people, he said. ADVERTISEMENT Opposition bill sees unanimous support The bill, introduced by the Liberals in May , received unanimous support during third reading last Thursday , amid the political upheaval surrounding a review of Policy 713 . Bill 52, the Human Organ and Tissue Donation Act, is now known as Avery's Law. Michelle Conroy, the Tory MLA for Miramichi, suggested the name change in honour of Avery Astle , 16, who died after a crash  in Miramichi in April 2019, along with three other teens. Avery's parents wanted to donate  his organs and tissues, including his eyes, but were told no one from the donation team run by Horizon Health was available to retrieve his organs. "We've come a long way to see this bill finally come to where it stands today so I'm very excited to see this, especially after the last couple of weeks we've have in this house," said Conroy. "I certainly think that everybody can agree that it's nice to come together on something for a change. It's been a long couple of weeks." ADVERTISEMENT Avery Astle 2 Avery Astle's parents were hoping to donate his blue eyes. (Ed Hunter/CBC) Nova Scotia is the only other jurisdiction in Canada that has adopted a presumed consent organ donation model. The law change was passed in April 2019 , and took effect in January 2021 , once supports were put in place to handle the anticipated increase in donations. Health Minister Bruce Fitch has said he expects a "significant investment" will be required to implement the new model in New Brunswick. Among the changes needed is a new registry, where New Brunswickers can register their decision to consent to donate all or some organs and tissues, known as express consent, or opt out of donating. Adults who choose not to register a decision and are not exempt will be considered potential donors. Making the decision The legislation sets out that death must be determined by at least two physicians who "have skill and knowledge in conducting the specific medical tests established by the medical profession for determining death." A physician who has had an association with a proposed organ recipient that might influence the physician's judgment may not take part in the determination of the death of an organ donor. ADVERTISEMENT The chief coroner may allow the removal of organs or tissue of a person "notwithstanding that death has not yet occurred if … in the opinion of a physician the death of the person is imminent by reason of injury or disease." When a person dies in a hospital or in circumstances where the coroner would be notified , or is close to death in the opinion of a physician, the hospital or chief coroner must, as soon as possible, provide to the organ-donation program and tissue bank with information, such as the person's age; the cause, or expected cause, of death; the time of death, if death has occurred; and any other available relevant medical and social history. The law prohibits dealing in body parts. No person shall buy, sell or otherwise deal in, directly or indirectly, for valuable consideration, any human organ, tissue or body for use in transplantation, education or scientific research, it says. www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6881139?fbclid=IwAR0vEtJkUSsE3hRbPAQXyxuMx8esHenBoYf-lJwlw_sqQxEakCd8OoEH7FE Read the full article

ASTL is tomorrow and I just now did a fit test for Arina, yikes
Made the breastplate myself for Angewomon but it looks silly, so I really struggled to make Arina’s shirt work for me (normally, I only need one bust dart 😂)
I’m also padded! Two pairs of pantyhose and couch cushion to balance my silhouette out and make me looks less like P
Come say Hi if you see me tomorrow! I’ll post my full line up in the morning 💕

N.B. RCMP on scene of fatal collision between bus and car on Highway 8
RCMP in New Brunswick are currently on scene of a fatal collision between a bus and a car on Highway 8 near Astle, N.B.
Sgt. Andrew Griffiths of the New Brunswick RCMP confirmed that police responded to a fatal collision at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Griffiths says the driver of the car died at the scene, but could not release any additional information about the driver at this time.
No one on the bus was injured.
Due to a fatal collision, Highway 8 near Astle is currently closed. Traffic is being diverted. We appreciate your patience. We will provide more information when we are able.
— RCMP New Brunswick (@RCMPNB) October 24, 2021
Griffiths was unable to confirm if the bus involved in the collision was related to the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior Hockey League, who announced on Facebook that their bus was involved in an accident on the way to Fredericton, but no one was injured.
The Timberwolves were scheduled to play against the Fredericton Red Wings on Sunday afternoon, but the game has been postponed.
Highway 8 runs behind Miramichi and Fredericton. Astle is located about 60 km from Fredericton, and 115 km from Miramichi.
Traffic is currently being diverted as investigators remain on scene to determine the cause of the collision, and Griffith says he expects the road to be closed for 'a few more hours’.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Zellerndorf House
streckhof reloaded
urban planning The site is located in a settlement of detached single-family houses, characteristic for the 1970s. The traditional arrangement of functions for each storey: basement/garage; ground floor/living space; attic floor/ bedrooms; has been transformed into a linear order. the so called „streckhof“, the original farm model for this area has been adapted by stringing together different functions in one floor.
function different functions are summarised in three structures similar to container. The mainentrance from the street is marked by a conopy which leads to the fully glazed passageway and ends in an overhang at the garden side. Garages and storage space is located in the first of three containers. The connecting passage to the second container acts as porch.
The living space, gets natural light from three sides and is situated in the second container. A vegetable garden is connected directly to the kitchen.
The third container implies the intimate areas, far off the street and the entrance area. Two eastorientated children’s bedrooms share one bathroom lying inbetween. There’s the parents bedroom orientated to the west.
The terrace with the elongated pool is framed by the last two buildings and thereby wind and privacy protected. Access is possible from the kitchen, the living room the hallway as well as the parents’ bedroom.
The walkway consists of open and closed sequences that allow constant views into the half-open courtyards and each container. By planting both sides of the glazed passageway with vine the client, who is a hobby wine grower, gets his own piece of vineyard into his house.
construction To make sure that the client can build as much as he is able to on his own, the outsidewalls are planned as brick construction. Even the insulation and the facade made of acryl glass has been installed by the client’s family. The roofconstruction consists of prefabricated timberelements with a foil sealing. The connecting passageway, also made of timber, acts as a bridge. Its facade consists of structural glazing without any mechanical fixing.
facility engineering all living rooms are equipped with underfloor heating. The water is heated throuh a geothermical heating collector and two heat pumps. the fresh air is supplied via controlled ventilation with heat recovery. The swimming pool is heated by a solar collector on the rooftop.

[may '21] - the life update no one asked for (and some quick links)
Hello team! How are you? What a month it has been! But: we have had some proper sun, the days are getting longer, I have gin&tonic with me to give me fuel to write this and it is now the 30th of april - yay! I know I'm bending the rules of these monthly posts a bit there, by writing the may post by anticipation but I really want to focus on 'proper' writing this weekend, so I hope that you will forgive me :).
But, first, some quick links to different blog pages you might not see on mobile :
to read my fics [links to the hinny ficfest fics: one ; two ; three]
to read my original work
fic recs [new additions]
proper blog/site [that I never update but maybe one day I’ll bother]
[NOTE: i am currently accepting prompts for short ficlets on the hp fandom if you fancy. my ask box is open :).]
Everything else, under the cut (contains: ETAs for current WIPs - say, if you’re waiting for chapter 8 of castles, for instance... -, reading lists, and life update)
Tumblr media
Currently, I’m writing:
**Castles [HP - post-war canon]**
links extended a/n-s: chapter v ; chapter vi
This is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT the priority for the coming days. We are having a bank holiday here in Ireland on Monday and the main objective now is to get the first draft of next chapter done. I have the outlines (both general and particular) and have - maybe - around 15% of the actual chapter done. Due to external factors (more on that below), I've had quite a hard time finding the time and energy to actually focus on this over the past few weeks which is why I kind of booked out this weekend to Get Shit Done. Hopefully, it works. ETA for next chapter: 30th May.
**R O A R series**
Harry&Hermione one-shot [ETA: July probably]
An original horror/thriller story [ETA: this is the next thing (after castles chap 8 on the agenda. Considering the ETA for chapter 8 of castles, we're probably looking at beginning of June for this.]
Something to fill this silk prompt [ETA: TBD]
That Peaky Blinders fic I started and never finished [ETA: TBD]
** Hinny Ficfest **
I am very happy to announce that I'll have not one but two short stories coming out for the upcoming hinny ficfest. I obviously can't talk about them too much on here but here's what I can tell you.
- the first one will be called: [like fire in the rain] and answers to prompt 78 - "truth or dare". It's a short three sentence story (a format I used to enjoy but haven't done on tumblr in aaaaages) that's a bit angsty (you know me) and is set within the 'sunlit days' in year 6.
- the second one, I'm not too sure of the title yet, but right now I'm thinking of a line from a song by passenger called 'holes': [she said the wolf's just a puppy and the door's double-locked (so what'd you gotta worry me for?)]. this is (loosely) inspired by prompt 27 (Molly finding out about Ginny/Harry) the summer after the war, but has kind of grown into a what-if-castles-wasn't-my-headcanon kind of fic. It's currently just shy of 3,000 words. I'm considering posting it on AO3/FF as well by the time it comes out on here but I'm not sure. We'll see.
They're both fully written but need a bit of polish but will definitely be ready by the 10th :).
Currently, I’m reading:
Calypso by David Sedaris: I've finished this! It was absolutely lovely - would highly recommend if you're looking for a nice, non-fiction read. I'd probably give it four stars. Not magnificent but definitely worth a read.
I’ve started re-reading the Divergent series because I have the attention span of a five year old atm. -- Update: yeah, still there. I don't think I've picked this up recently.
I've also started Watch Her Fall by Erin Kelly. I really loved her thriller He Said/She Said so thought I'd give it a try. For now, it's fine but I've found it sort of hard to get into it if I'm honest.
I’m still labouring through Troubled Blood, the JKR/RobertGalbraith book (ugh), but I have made significant progress on this. I'm on page 789 so almost at the end. I cannot wait to be finished with it. On top of everything else, it's just way too long. And, that's coming from someone whose favourite HP book is OOTP.
In other news:
I have to say, this month's been a bit of a struggle. Not in terms of mental health but just a lot of things happening at once. I had my exams at the start of the month, obviously, then I went home to France. Then, Ireland decided to introduce mandatory hotel quarantine so I had to change my tickets, come back early to avoid it. Then, the day before I left, my mother had a stroke. I just - I don't want to dwell on this too much. It's over, now, she's fine, has (from what the MRI showed) very little damage to her brain. She's at home and living her best life. Frankly, she's a bit of a miracle. This being said, I can't explain to you the stress and anxiety and heartache of last few weeks, and of not knowing what to do. Of not being able to fly home, having to be in Ireland because I was starting a new job and couldn't afford the hotel quarantine; it was just a lot. I think I didn't even have words to put on it at the time, which is why I didn't write about it before. It's easier now, now that it's over. In the thick of it, I didn't know where to start.
Now, I also didn't want to mention this because I don't mean it as a sob story. I just feel like I should explain why I haven't been the best at putting content out, lately. For that first week after it happened, when we were waiting for the medical exams to come through, I had to start a new job, pretend to be 'happy to be here' and 'excited' like everything was fine and that alone kind of sucked all the energy out of me. I was texting her every half hour at the same time, anxiously waiting for a reply. She lives alone, you see, and she's the only family I have left. I feel bad about not being able to write, but it's been hard. I just couldn't focus. On top of that, while the new job is interesting (and it pays money, yaaaay!), it's just a new routine to get back into, so I've also been feeling very tired.
Additionally, the extrovert in me has been begging to see more of her mates, lately. The weather has been really nice and I'm so eager to go out that I have struggled to keep my resolutions of 'no, I'm staying in and writing tonight.' I used to get plenty of social interactions at work, back in the day, but now that I'm fully remote, all I want to do on my days off is see people (especially with the easing of restrictions in Ireland). I feel like overall, it's fair, though. Introverts have struggled in our society for years, now, it's fair that we, extroverts, during the pandemic, bear more of the burden. It's just that this sudden return of my social life has also not truly catered to much writing time, haha. Hopefully, May will be more stable.
I am feeling better, now. Mum is doing good, the results of her MRI were very positive and the only real thing that's changed is that she says she's 'exhausted' which I guess can be expected after a stroke, haha. She's a warrior and I love her. This week, I've been feeling finally more able to focus and with the bank holiday, I really hope to get some proper writing done. I just need to escape in the magic of HP again, haha.
Anyways, sorry for this rather grim update. I suppose I also want to be honest and say that it's not always rainbows and butterflies. Here's to May, though. Hopefully, it'll treat us better :).

England frustrated by New Zealand tail as Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner dig in

England frustrated by New Zealand tail as Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner dig in
England’s miserable winter ended in frustration when New Zealand managed to hang on for a nail-biting draw here to leave them without a win in 13 away Tests.
New Zealand took this two-Test series 1-0 after eighth wicket pair Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner managed to defy England as they threw everything at them until Wagner was out to Joe Root from what turned out to be the day’s last ball.
It still left New Zealand with two wickets left when play finally ended as near darkness descended on Christchurch with Trent Boult making his slow way to the crease and it was all the more frustrating for England to know that one of them in Tim Southee was suffering from a virus and would have only batted in an emergency.
England captain Joe Root drops to his knees to rue a missed chance to dismiss Ish Sodhi
England’s fielders react in unison to one of their missed opportunities on the fifth day
England appeal for the wicket of Neil Wagner but their shouts fall on deaf ears
Mark Wood reacts to a catching opportunity that goes begging as England search for wickets
James Vince reacts in the field after failing to take a catch on the fifth and final day
Joe Root reacts to a dropped catch as England see opportunities come and go on day five
Stuart Broad reacts to another close shave as England toil in their pursuit of the last wickets
Ish Sodhi, dropped on nought, ended up the New Zealand hero as he hung on for more than three hours to finish unbeaten with his third Test half-century after coming in to the side for this Test in place of the injured Todd Astle.
It will go down as the match that gave England their worst ever run of away Tests without a win but it was also a big day for New Zealand as it gave them only their fourth Test series win against them.
This was an agonising day for Joe Root as England looked certain to end their winter of discontent on a high note when they had New Zealand six wickets down with fully 54 overs to go on this final day of the final Test.
But New Zealand’s lower middle order and tail-end could not be budged on what remained a decent Hagley Oval pitch with England adding to their own problems by missing four more chances to add to the one they shelled on the fourth evening.
Mark Stoneman missed no fewer than three of those chances while James Vince was culpable in the other day and while none of them were straight-forward England could only blame themselves for their carelessness.
They will now make the long journey home with much to contemplate for Root and coach Trevor Bayliss as they contemplate going backwards in Test cricket over the last two years.
And Root finished both metaphorically and literally on his knees as he fielded close to the wicket slumped on his knees in a desperate bid to cling on to low chances that never came his way.
There had been controversy over the failure to start the last day half an hour early, apparently because of concerns over morning dew, but in the event the sun shone down on Christchurch and a perfect stage was set.
Another hands on head moment for Joe Root as the ball rolls away for New Zealand runs
Mark Stoneman unsuccessfully appeals for the wicket of New Zealand’s Tom Latham
New Zealand batsman Neil Wagner ducks a bouncer as England searched for wickets
Joe Root spent time fielding on his knees as England desperately searched for the wickets
When play eventually did start England made a sensational start when Stuart Broad took two wickets with the first two balls of the fifth day.
Broad, who has been revitalised in this series by the remodelling of his bowling action, struck immediately when Jeet Raval turned what was an innocuous first delivery of the day straight to mid-wicket.
Then, even more dramatically, Broad had Kane Williamson for the first golden duck of his illustrious Test career as two New Zealand wickets had gone down even before the Barmy Army had burst into their daily rendition of Jerusalem.
It left Broad on the verge of becoming the first man in history to take three Test hat-tricks but Ross Taylor, the man he has dismissed 10 times, played out the third ball of the day comfortably.
Broad, on one of those irresistible charges that have marked his career, could have had Taylor on six but James Vince dropped a difficult chance at third slip, just as he had dropped Tom Latham on the fourth evening.

Remarkably, it was the 36th dropped catch off Broad in the last three years, more than anybody else in world cricket in that time.
But Taylor was not to last as he became a first Test victim for Jack Leach, top edging a sweep to short backward leg just after Joe Root, who had been criticised for his handling of Leach by Graeme Swann, moved Alastair Cook there.
When Henry Nicholls became the fourth New Zealand wicket in the first hour, driving at Jimmy Anderson and being held by Cook as England began to dream of their first victory in 13 away Tests.
Mark Wood, who had made a decent return to Test cricket without gaining any rewards, got in on the act after lunch when he went round the wicket and immediately saw BJ Watling flick him to leg-slip.
Leach, growing into Test cricket and now gaining assistance from the pitch, gained his second wicket when Tom Latham top edged a sweep and this time Vince took a good catch running in from deep square leg.

Joe Root himself bowled a number of overs as England desperately searched for wickets
The first signs England had blown it came when both Colin de Grandhomme and Ish Sodhi were dropped by Mark Stoneman – both very sharp chances – off Leach but just when frustration was growing Wood forced the big man of New Zealand into a pull and Leach held a good catch at fine leg.
That proved to be England’s last hoorah as Sodhi and Wagner resisted everything Root could throw at them with the ball stubbornly refusing to move off the straight. And England cannot blame the failure to start early as the light held and they were able to bowl 103 overs in the day after losing 24 to bad light and rain on the fourth evening. But it was all to no avail.
England will rue those five missed chances – three of them from Stoneman and two from Vince – that ultimately cost them that elusive first win of the winter. And their mood will not be helped by the knowledge that the ill Southee would have been severely restricted had he been forced to bat. In the end it was another hugely disappointing Test for England.

Nasser Hussain's player ratings: Time to drop Moeen Ali

Nasser Hussain's player ratings: Time to drop Moeen Ali
England’s miserable winter of Test cricket continued on Monday as they were thrashed by an innings and 49 runs by New Zealand.
Having been skittled for 58 on the first day, England did well to push the contest to the final session of the fifth day, though almost two days were lost to rain in Auckland.
Sportsmail’s NASSER HUSSAIN rates and slates both sides’ performance in the first Test…
Alastair Cook failed twice and needed to play more ahead of the first Test in Auckland
Alastair Cook 2
Failed twice. Some will say he was unlucky in the second innings to be caught down the leg side, but when he’s out of rhythm his head falls over to the off side and he becomes vulnerable to those deliveries.
He’s the kind of player who needs to get into a groove, but two weeks before he came out to New Zealand he was lambing on his farm. He needed to play more before an important Test series.
Mark Stoneman 5
He’s made a few starts now in Test cricket, but hasn’t made more than 56. That was a disappointing way to go in the second innings: he must have known Neil Wagner would bounce him, and there were men out for the shot.
He needs to convert one of his starts in the second Test at Christchurch. If not, he’ll be looking over his shoulder.
Joe Root 6
He made a gutsy half-century in the second innings, but his dismissal in the last over of the fourth evening left the door open for New Zealand.
And he was one of many to play a loose shot on that horrific first morning – an expansive drive against the swinging ball wasn’t a great option. He should also take some responsibility for England’s attack.
He said before the game that his team needed to do things differently after the Ashes, then went in with four right-arm seamers of roughly the same pace.
Joe Root has to take responsibility for selecting four seamers of roughly the same pace
Dawid Malan 4
He basically got out to a couple of prods. He’s been playing the ball late, which is the right thing to do, but he wasn’t moving his feet, so it looked as if he was playing French cricket.
He’s looking a bit vulnerable outside off stump, like he did in England last summer.
Ben Stokes 6
Another bloke who suffered from a lack of preparation, though for different reasons. But to expect him to go out at No 5 against Trent Boult and Tim Southee was a big ask.
He played well second time round, but then got out just before the dinner break.
Perhaps the problems he was having with his back meant he felt he had to take on Wagner’s short stuff, but it was a wide ball and he could easily have left it alone.
Jonny Bairstow 5
He kept well, but had a couple of soft dismissals. He was out driving on the up in the first innings, then pulled a long hop straight to midwicket in the second – not long after pulling a long hop to mid-on and being dropped.
Jonny Bairstow kept well but was guilty of a couple of soft dismissals with the bat
Moeen Ali’s bowling was innocuous and he did not look like he was watching the ball either
Moeen Ali 4
His bowling was innocuous yet again, as it has been all winter, and I think it’s time for a change now – which could mean a Test debut for Somerset’s Jack Leach at Christchurch.
He missed a full-toss in the first innings, and I’m not sure he’s watching the ball properly – maybe because he’s worried about the short delivery.
NEW ZEALAND RATED
Jeet Raval 2, Tom Latham 4, Kane Williamson 9.5, Ross Taylor 4, Henry Nicholls 9.5, BJ Watling 6, Colin de Grandhomme 5, Todd Astle 7, Tim Southee 9, Trent Boult 9.5, Neil Wagner 8
Chris Woakes 6
That was a good effort with the bat on the last day, but his bowling has been a concern this winter.
In a way, he mirrors England’s problem: he was excellent in the one-day series, when batsmen come after him, but toothless in the Tests, when they can just wait for the bad ball. He needs to find nip and pace with the Kookaburra.
Craig Overton 6
His first-innings runs meant England avoided being bowled out for 30, but his bowling just looks a bit samey – he’s the fourth right-arm seamer in the team, and probably the slowest.
He’s symptomatic of England’s lack of X-factor in their attack, which is why they may look to Mark Wood for Christchurch.
Craig Overton is symptomatic of England’s lack of X-factor in their seam attack
Stuart Broad 7
Despite the work he’s put in, I’m not convinced he’s moving the ball away from the right-hander.
His wrist still looks to be in more or less the same position to me. It was nice for him to get to 400 Test wickets, and he might have had a couple more but for dropped catches.
Jimmy Anderson 7
He bowled pretty well, even though he’s not a big fan of pink-ball cricket when the lights aren’t on. He’s going to be around for a while yet, but he needs others to back him up.
It worries me that even with four England greats in this side – Cook, Root, Broad and Anderson – they have lost nine of their last 10 Tests away from home. They need to start planning for the future.
