I saw one of these stories on the Sailor Moon subreddit yesterday and thought it was just a Chibi Moon joke, but I guess it's real.

"Second Moon" / "mini moon" discussion:

A tiny asteroid named PT5 will wander close to earth and temporarily be in orbit. Some people are calling it a "mini moon" since an object in orbit around a planet may be called a moon.

And of course, people seeing headlines about Earth getting a "second moon" are now running to their Astrologers and asking "WHAT DOES IT MEAN"?

From an astrology perspective this isn't really a big event. Small asteroids are plentiful and numerous, and not all of them even have names, much less astrological Correspondences. Not every object in space is considered relevant, astrologically. Small asteroids have temporarily orbited earth before, but it is unclear whether any astrological data was collected at those times, and if so it wasn't deemed highly significant by the astrology community.

There's actually a lot of things happening in space all the time, and not every Astronomical occurance is considered to be Astrologically important. We can certainly pay attention and see if any distinct events arise, and then collectively discuss whether those are related to a stray asteroid. I'm not fully discounting the possibility of some significance- but while this is a neat Astronomical occurance, the Astrology community itself isn't really talking about it. Hardly a whisper about it on the main Reddit Astrology channels. The only reason we are really talking about it is to respond to the general public who are asking us "what does it mean?". And to respond to the clickbait sensational influencers that are trying to tell you it's a BIG DEAL (the same people who try to sell you on Lion's Gate energy portals)

Look, it's eclipse season. We just had an Equinox. A lot of outer planets are retrograde. Venus just moved into intense Scorpio. There's lots of time-tested astrological events that are contributing to why you feel so tired and grumpy. The approach of a tiny asteroid swooping by for a quick hello isn't over-riding all these other astrological influences.

In the link below, i found one astrologer explaining that we don't really have any profound astrological correlations with this tiny asteroid and haven't yet assigned any special meaning to the occasional ocurance of an asteroid being pulled into a temporary earth orbit.

The space rock, which has been named “2024 PT5,” has been traveling along its normal path around the sun, but will be temporarily pulled into Earth's gravitational orbit later this month. The object, which is around 33 feet long, was first spotted by researchers in South Africa, who wrote about it in the journal Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society this month. The moon, the closest celestial body to Earth, will have a new neighbor starting next week: a second moon. An asteroid will begin its 57-day orbit around Earth, giving Earth a "temporary second moon." NASA started watching 2024 PT5, the asteroid, on August 7th. The asteroid originated from the Arjuna asteroid belt, a collection of asteroids with orbits similar to Earth that are 93 million miles away. Next week, it will momentarily mimic our own moon's orbit around the Earth, and it's roughly the size of a bus.

Apparently this mini moon is 300,000 times smaller than earth’s primary moon, and as a younger sibling whose older sibling is 7 inches taller than me, saying the mini moon is my favorite is neither difficult nor emotionally taxing. Younger sibling solidarity!

i’m so glad earth only has one moon, if there were more i’d have to pick a favorite and that sounds too emotionally taxing to even fathom

The asteroid 2024 PT5 will orbit earth for approximately 2 months until November 25. According to NASA this temporary capture will start right at this moment (September 29, 19:54 UTC) if tumblr queued this right. source link
