Subverted in The Devil’s Revenge in which Kaichi spends half of the episode being locked away in a birdcage in the Underworld, partaking in joining Lexie and Natty snarking off at the Devil, going as far as to mock him about his “pitch-spoon”.

Expressive Ears:

Expy: When Gemwing2010 first made him up, she had picked up many inspirations for his design and a few of his traits.

He is heavily inspired by the old ornament collection, Pocket Dragons, mainly by his pocket size and love for cookies.

He is also inspired by Sparx the Dragonfly to be Katie’s sidekick

Fairy Companion: Make that a Fairy Dragon companion. He is often seen at Katie’s side to the point of being portrayed as the Sparx the Dragonfly to her Spyro the Dragon.

Fairy Dragon: In some sense. He’s a tiny fairy-sized dragon like species called a Sprigon (the name of his species is a combination of sprite and dragon).

Floating in a Bubble: One of his abilities is to encase himself inside an air bubble when he needs to travel and speak underwater.

Making a Splash: He’s an Ocean Sprigon and he has some water-based magic.

Mascots Love Sugar:

Meaningful Name: His name means “Sea” or “Ocean” in Japanese, which is fitting for an Ocean Sprigon.

Nice Guy: While he does have his snarky moments and has a somewhat mischievous streak on some occasions, he is genuinely a sweet kid who’s always got his friends’ backs.

Non-Human Sidekick: He is a small Fairy Dragon and he is loyal companion.

Our Dragons Are Different: He’s a small Fairy Dragon with fur instead of scales, has a busy fox-like tail, long rabbit-like ears, antlers instead of horns and his wings are more flowery than feathery or the traditional bat-like stature.

The Smurfette Principle: Gender-inverted. Since Aster Cyra came, Kaichi is currently the only male Sprigon in the company of the Dreamstones.

Sweet Tooth: Sprigons have a fondness for sweet foods. Their diet is mainly on fruits and berries but they still have a soft spot for cookies given Kaichi often snacking on them and trying to sneak one on separate occasions is of any indication.

Trademark Favourite Food: He really loves cookies, mainly chocolate chip and Oreos.

Undying Loyalty:

You Just Had to Say It: Kaichi had said those exact words to Cuphead when the Devil appeared to either steal Lexie and the cup’s souls and Natty’s wand or attempt to kidnap Katie the moment Cuphead utters out his Catchphrase, “Eh, I ain’t to worried about it”.

“Oh, He’s certainly attractive and more importantly has double what a human husband could offer me.” Princess Haridra observed the elegantly painted portrait of her betrothed. Kyr couldn’t focus; the usual conversations of perversion, beauty, or scholarship couldn’t reach him. “Kyr? You seem more unfocused than usual. I know this desert heat might have fried your brain but…” Aster spoke before quickly being silenced. “Kyr must remain focused for our protection. These lands, despite being owned by our kingdom, are lawless.” Haridra spoke before returning to the conversation of trade agreements and marriage. It was an unspoken acknowledgement among these few women that Kyr was their guardian. A wolf hidden among sheep… A warrior hidden among royals… A man hidden among women.

Kyr could smell an unusual scent which lingered attractively inside the plums of warm desert air. Perfume. The scent didn’t belong to soldier or animal but to someone or something stalking them from afar. Kyr thought the unique scent might belong to a dragon, perhaps one secretly protecting their Prince’s Betrothed, but that wasn’t the case. They didn’t smell of fire. They smelled of blood…

Kyr wrinkled his nose upon noticing a glimmer among the sand. “Down!” He declared using his body to shield the women who coward upon the floor as an arrow broke through the stained glass window. Thankfully, the colorful glass wasn’t sharp enough to pierce his corset. Kyr wasn’t allowed to carry a weapon, this human kingdom didn’t allow women to openly defend themselves, a foolish law. A law Princess Haridra intended to revoke upon returning with her husband's army. Kyr could smell blood and the scent of battle. Their guards weren’t winning.

“Sorry!” Kyr snatched a hairpin from Aster. One coward rushed to open the door but Kyr moved faster than before. He slammed the door into the traitor’s stomach before stabbing him with the hairpin. Kyr wasn’t overwhelmingly strong but extremely fast. He snatched the sword from the man’s hand and finished him off. Protecting the carriage until blood covered him completely. There were so many enemies to slaughter… Their guards fell but the smell of dragon fire was close.

considering how embarrassed keroli was about wearing her dress the first time we see her dressed up as korumu, her & iruma actually have a pretty similar reactions to the thought of being an akudol. lied & amelie both say they’re embarrassed at the akudol games, too. like even though i was complaining about how iruma as a show treats gender nonconformity a few days ago there is kind of this implication that everyone just inherently finds the idea of being an idol a bit embarrassing whether or not you’re a girl or a guy. everyone just does it anyway because it’s also kind of fun

143. An Unkindness of Ghosts, by Rivers Solomon

Owned: Yes Page count: 349 My summary: Aster has never been one to be quiet and take abuse. Unluckily for her, she lives on the Matilda, a space ship carrying the last of humanity to the Promised Land, and a highly segregated society. Following her dead mother’s footsteps, Aster believes she might have found a secret that can change anything...if she can live to see it. My rating: 5/5 My commentary:

This book blew me away. I’ve read one of Solomon’s books before, The Deep, and picked this up on the same virtual shopping trip largely on a whim. I didn’t expect to be as gripped as I was. ‘I couldn’t put it down’ is a bit of a cliché, but I literally took an extra ten minutes on my lunch break the other day purely so I could finish reading the last couple of chapters of this. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it’s a really intelligent and emotional look at the deep scars racism and slavery have left in our society, and the practical effects of prejudice on the world. So, uh, trigger warning for that.

Aster is our protagonist, an autistic scientist from the lower decks of the Matilda, who spends her spare time offering help where she can to the people on the ship, while also dealing with the harsh conditions. She has a certain privilege in her relationship to the Surgeon, Theo, a mixed-race man and the illegitimate child of the previous sovereign, who nevertheless enjoys a higher status than Aster and those on the lower decks. It is, essentially, antebellum slavery - the darker-skinned people on the lower decks are forced to do hours of backbreaking physical labour under cruel overseers, while the light-skinned people on the upper decks get to enjoy freedom and leisure at their expense. Aster is a complicated person - she is practical, logical, and literal to a fault, but that doesn’t stop her trying to help those around her. Her not-explicitly-stated-but-obvious autism doesn’t stop her from feeling and being an empathetic human being, but it does make things like communication hard for her and often causes her problems and escalates the dangerous situations she is in. Her point of view is unique and interesting; in the sections where the narrative flitted away from her POV, I found myself itching to return to her. (No shade to the other characters, I just really love Aster.)

She’s a person marked by trauma, holding onto the people in her life who are important - her friend Giselle, her Aint Melusine, Theo - and trying to help those she can, but with the realistic view that her efforts aren’t always going to bear fruit. She is prone to acting rashly and acting out against the guards and those who would try to harm her and her people, which often causes more problems than it solves, and leads to even harsher conditions and punishments. At the same time, she’s been trained by the society she’s in to accept the horror around her. My heart went out for her every time she got backed into one of these corners - and, no spoilers, but some of the stuff that happens later in the book is intense, to the point where I was actively visibly wincing reading it.

This society is a really interesting one, in a horrifying sort of way. Solomon doesn’t just transpose 17th-19th century slavery into space, they come up with a whole living, working society. One of the details I really liked was the different languages used across different decks, as well as the cultures of the different decks. For example, on Aster’s deck, everyone is assumed to be a woman unless otherwise specified - on another, every child is referred to with they/them. Gender is actually something that’s played with a fair amount - Aster voluntarily had a hysterectomy and a mastectomy when she could to make her infertile, and ends up crossdressing to get by on higher decks. There’s a lot going on here and if I were to talk about it this post would be a book in and of itself, but it was all really interesting and nuanced and multi-textured and honestly, this book is incredible, please seek it out if you have the chance.

the gender nonconformity of An Unkindness of Ghosts is rooted not just in personal identity but in the desperate need to break out of a binary of victim/victimizer. Aster chooses a hysterectomy to get out of a eugenic breeding program, and crossdresses to gain more freedom of movement. Theo’s non-manhood and obsessive pursuit of ‘goodness’ are connected. they each, very badly, want to meet each other on neutral ground, without an unwanted power dynamic between them, whether it is gendered or racialized.

Favorite possession: During a pop-up carnival date, Aster expressed a desire for one of the ducks at the ‘pick a duck for a number’ game. He couldn’t care less what prize they won, he just wanted the stupid duck. He picked his numbers, and while the person was getting his prize, Ash took off with lucky number 57. It is something that goes with him everywhere if he can guarantee its safety. He keeps it for good luck, and makes Ash kiss it to recharge it.

Equipment: Most of the time he doesn’t carry any weapons, as he can be absentminded and clumsy at times. Especially if he is allowed near any artefacts tied to Cthulhu. He does have a ritual knife named Ph’N’Gha that seems to constantly be moving, tentacles wrapped around the blade. It has an eye where the crossguard is, and the blade itself transfers anything cut with it to R’lyeh.

Grooming habits: Aster has to be physically pried out of a bath or shower. Otherwise, he will stay under the water for hours, spaced out if he isn’t with Asher. Otherwise, he shaves his legs, arms, and armpits, shampoos and conditions his hair, and washes his face in the morning and at night. He stays fairly clean, he assumes, and washes his hands more if he deals with things that get them dirty. If Ash is doing something towards his grooming, Aster will usually join him.

He and his family gather for meals together, even if the twins have to make their parents breakfast in bed in the face of their father’s pain and their mother’s unwillingness to eat.

Secrets: For a while, he wanted to keep his relationship with Ash a secret, but he loved him so much he couldn’t. For the most part, he doesn’t keep secrets, because it feels like lying to hide things from people. However, he did keep the secret of why he brought them back in time from Ash for fear of his reaction.

Fears: Losing Ash somehow, losing himself to let Cthulhu move into his body, Valentino’s cruelty

Worries: He constantly worries about Ash, whose sole purpose is caring for him. He wants to be there for him, too.

Eating Habits: Unlike his parents, Aster has a fairly healthy appetite. He snacks a lot when he isn’t sure when dinner will be done.

Food preferences: His favorite foods that aren’t human or Ash include softshell crabs, snow crab stew, and salmon prepared any which way.

Sleep preferences: He sleeps best if Ash is with him, otherwise he won’t sleep. Sometimes, he doesn’t want to sleep even with him there.

Work preferences: He needs a quiet, dimly lit place with soft music playing to be able to focus. Being held or touching Ash in some way boosts this effect.

Book preferences: He reads a lot of texts in R’lyehian, but also likes horror stories with romantic elements. He always gets mad when the girl won’t get with the killer/abductor.

Temperament: He can be very mild and jovial, but his temper is always hiding just under the placid surface. He will jump from happy to extremely pissed in seconds.

Perception and outlook on life: He is an optimistic Nihilist. He knows life is meaningless but that doesn’t make him give up. He wants to experience everything he possibly can in life.

Desires: He wants to do anything he can with Ash. Eventually, he wants them to get a nice apartment or a house on the beach and live out their days together.

Regrets: Learning what his mother wanted to do, taking him and Ash back in time.

Habits:

Verbal quirks: Aster has a weird habit of slipping into random accents when he’s comfortable with someone. Favorites are Posh British, Eastern European, and Australian.

Physical quirks: He is always, always, always touching Ash in some way. Ash likes to drape around him and he will joke that he has a very nice scarf.

Gestures: He bites the inside of his cheek when he’s nervous. He tends to talk with his hands when he’s excited about something. Dramatic sighing indicates his unwillingness to do things.

Work habits: If he is interested in something, he will focus on it for hours. Especially if Ash is there, he focuses better. If he is uninterested, he will find everything else to do. He has ended up cleaning Disigi’s tank in order to avoid doing something he didn’t want to do.

Sleeping habits: Aster has a habit of sleeping like an octopus. He curls up on his side against Ash, puts his arm over his chest and his leg over his hips. Ash holds him with an arm under his head, and sometimes they hold hands. He will do this every single night. He usually wakes up facing away from him, vacuum sealed to his side.

Annoying habits: He wanders off so quickly and easily that he often gets lost. He sometimes just makes noises with his mouth. It isn’t exactly a tic, he just cannot handle silences. His favorite sounds to make are explosions sounds. When he’s nervous, he taps his fingers on his thumbs or shakes his hands.

Irrational habits: He is somewhat superstitious and will not speak if driving past a cemetery, or he picks up his feet, holds his breath and touches the window of the car when going over train tracks. He washes his hands every time he gets something on them and so they dry out quickly. Ash has to put lotion on them or he won’t do it and then his thumbs crack.

Eating habits: He will mostly only eat if Ash will feed him. He is more picky when Ash isn’t around. As long as he can sit on Ash, he will eat, even if Ash won’t feed him. He also enjoys feeding Ash and alternating who gets fed.

Healthy habits: He brushes his teeth after eating even if he has to do it in a public place. He washes his body every day and his hair every three days. He practices his instruments once a day, alternating between the three.

Unhealthy habits: He cannot function without Ash. Period.

Mannerisms: If he isn’t touching Ash, Ash is touching him. He needs constant attention and validation, and will seek it wherever he thinks he can find it. If Ash is not with him, it’s likely Disigi is. He is very grabby and needs something to hold at all times.

Drinking habits: A lot of the time, he will drink laying down. He also has a habit of drinking soda over water, unless he can put lemon juice or salt in it. He also will ask to sample from his father’s flask when he drinks.

Vices: Ash, cough syrup, Disigi, his dietary restrictions, his allergies, the anemia

Objects Kept In - And Why:

Their closet: Other than his and Aster’s clothes, he keeps his skateboard in the closet to keep it from being on the floor and a safety hazard. He also has some of his witchcraft items in there to keep them safe.

Their bedroom: A tank of some of the creatures he vomited up one day, because he wanted to care for them. Clothes everywhere because he doesn’t like to hang things back up when looking for something to wear, if he even gets them hung up. A set of taxidermized hands that Firkle thought looked similar to his and Asher’s, holding hands. He thinks it’s a really sweet gift his mother gave them.

Their purse/bag: He doesn’t usually carry the bag, Ash does. He forgets it constantly. Mostly, he uses it to hold neat things he finds and wants to keep, but it also has his medication and spare tins of sardines in it in case he has a problem with his anemia.

Their fridge: He keeps a stock of cherry Sprite because he likes it, and makes sure they have strawberry ice cream at all times. They are his favorites to make floats with.

Their car: He doesn’t have one.

Their desk: A feather pen and jar of ink for writing, along with a notebook with thick paper. A neon orange rubber ball filled with flour as a stress relieving toy. Most of his makeup and nail polish to keep it separate from his parents’.

Their pockets: His phone, for obvious reasons. A bone he found the day they got there on the street. He thinks it’s a squirrel’s. His wallet, and a bracelet he doesn’t want to wear with his allergies and anemia on it in case something happens.

Their junk drawer: Everything he touches is a junk drawer.

Their glove compartment: No car.

Their backpack: His school books and homework that he either has not or has done, for school. Several books he’d rather read at school. His calculator he’s only ever used to fuck around with and never for class. A sketchbook for wasting time.

Their locker: Six coats he keeps forgetting in it, and two shirts for the same reason. What school stuff he doesn’t need at the moment so he doesn’t have a fifty pound backpack. A mirror and pencil holder on the door in case he needs them. A spare black mirror in case he needs to be contacted at school.

Their car trunk: No car.

Their wallet: An emergency $20 just in case he ends up needing to eat when he’s out. His insurance cards and an ID in case he has to go to the hospital. A medication list for the same reason. A photo set of him and Asher in a photo booth being dorks together, with the last one of them kissing. He loves just pulling it out and looking at it from time to time.

Their suitcase: Whatever he needs for going out of town, usually. He doesn’t keep one packed.

The Guardians all knew of the prophecy. One day, there would be a winter spirit, a male bearer who has the capability of dethroning the Guardians for nearly a century. The sprite would join their greatest enemy, Pitch Black.

Hope you like these. Please feel free to correct me on these. *~*~*~*~* These are cute. Not sure if it’s just me, but it feels like these play differently to a western audience. Amane’s pretty campy by western standards and deaging people to younger or childlike states might not play well with western tastes. It treads dangerously close to “effeminate/crossdressing/queer child predator vibes because the west has a really bad history of combining queer and pedophilic as evil traits in media because of the Hayes code so making your character “double bad” involved making them BOTH queer and a pedophile and that’s left kind of a bad stain on media literacy. I think it’s cute, but with the wave of anti culture going around, I can 100% see how someone could misread this (deliberately or not) as either playing into a bad stereotype or “being absolutely accurate representation of nasty filthy shippers!” I can definitely see Amane as being a character I’d main. I seem to gravitate to buff bara dad-types like Darunia or effete waifish colorful guys with femme traits. Catch me in DnD any time with a twigman tiefling bard just being tall and skinny and slutty as hell. I think Emil turning into Aster is a good way to sidestep the age issue. Because Emil’s actual “age” is hotly contested. Ratatosk, being several thousand years old and probably born either fully formed or like Corrine where his initial form wasn’t really an infant. If Emil is Ratatosk’s age, the de-aging won’t really affect him. And since we don’t know Ratatosk’s true form or at least previous form as Onshuu only shows him as humanoid and bathed in light, he can’t de-age into a previous form. Emil as a personality only existed for 6 months to a year depending on how long you think the journey in the game takes in real time. De-aging him in that sense would make him not exist, turning him to just Ratatosk. And in that case we again run into the true form problem. So transforming into Aster as being the “true form” or “parody” rather than de-aging seems like the best bet for Emil. I know realistically that Alice possibly or even probably had a happy childhood before everything bad that happened, but Zelos being self-aware about the transformation while Alice seems to actively regress to a childlike state seems... odd to me. While the game did show some characters embracing it and some wishing to return to normal, they all seemed more or less aware of their transformations. Having Alice regress doesn’t quite seem right. If anything I think it might be better if she had a toy rocking horse (or Decus doll) that she could spank with a toy riding crop. Also, and this is probably just a personal preference, but I think Richter de-aging and just sighing like “Goddamnit, puberty again?” Would be incredibly funny.
