THE SPACE BETWEEN them is quiet as julian works to clean & bandage astarion's wound. in truth, the pale elf could have done it himself, & perhaps would have preferred to, always reserving hurt to be examined in private. but julian had swooped in to help before he'd gotten a chance to retreat in privacy, & astarion finds himself on a strange middle ground, where he would prefer to leave, but also realizes that he doesn't mind staying, either.

the vulnerability is almost overwhelming, & it takes some grounding for astarion to remain present, ears twitching just slightly as julian presses on tender spot to bandage area. lips purse & then the vampire spawn gives a soft exhale, almost a sigh, & looks at julian. ❝ you know, you don't have to do this, ❞ astarion says softly, though the point is moot now that julian is almost done. almost a fruitless attempt at stopping him, showing inner reluctance. ❝ i can handle myself. ❞

❝ I DIDN'T KNOW, if i'm being honest with you, darling, ❞ the vampire spawn says as he comes closer, a slow saunter while keeping crimson gaze locked on julian's shaking figure. other seems to be having a hard time processing what he has almost just done, & astarion isn't one to comfort in these situations, but he does feel a sliver of empathy for the other. he can recognize himself as a young elf, scared & taken by the person who would come to make him a slave.

the recognition pains him, but it's necessary ― it fuels his response, as he reaches for the other, attempting to steady julian with what he hopes is a grounding touch to hands. ❝ you're alright now, i took care of him for you. it's not your fault that you can't do it. killing is not for everybody. ❞ it's a rich pep talk coming from him, but it's all astarion can think of to try to calm other down. ❝ you're safe now. no one is going to make you hurt anyone else. ❞

OTHER MAN'S BARE SHOULDERS gleam in the moonlight, reflected in the lake he's sinking further into. it's a rare occasion that their group finds themselves close to a body of water this large, & others have already taken advantage, having dipped into the warmer waves earlier in the day. now, at midnight, it's just the two of them ― and astarion won't lie to himself & pretend like julian's invitation isn't enticing.

❝ with an offer like that, ❞ the vampire spawn purrs, smirk coming to lips, ❝ how can i possibly refuse ? ❞ he tugs off his own sleep shirt and trousers before following other into the water. it's cooler now without the sun's influence, but just as pleasant, in astarion's opinion ― the cold doesn't bother him, as it might others. he makes his way over to where julian's waiting, coming close & into personal space, intent on making a statement of his own. ❝ is this what you wanted, darling ? time alone with me ? ❞

a soft chuckle escapes the vampire spawn at the obvious bluff that he senses on other's part. julian tries to play it off like he isn't afraid, but astarion can hear the way his heart beats hard in chest, the way blood races through veins faster with his proximity. crimson gaze finds and holds the bard's gaze as astarion takes a pointed step into julian's personal space, unrelenting. ❝ no ? are you sure about that, darling ? ❞ smug smirk comes to lips, knowing that he's proving his point. ❝ then why is your heart racing so fast, hmm ? ❞

❝ you won't get another opportunity like this, julian. ❞ vampire spawn seems displeased with other's reaction, at least for the time being. astarion doesn't see why he has to make a case for other's company; it should be a given that he wants to spend time with julian, given their growing bond. anticipation of rejection courses through veins, making mood sour. crimson gaze is sharp as it evaluates other, resting on features in attempt to determine true thoughts. ❝ i'm not going to ask again. do you want to come with me, or not ? ❞
