𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐀 reassurance for the soldier, riley's attempt at comfort. they're learning, albeit slowly, just how 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇 he cares for them, what he's capable & willing to do for them in the effort of taking care of them, which has always been a foreign concept to the soldier. he gives affection unconditionally, & they find themselves leaning into it more often than not, somehow 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 that warmth even if their head actively alerts them to the dangers of lowering their guard. of all places, riley & his apartment is the safest to land, were they to fall ― but they have no reason to contemplate this, as the very concept of being capable of something like that has consistently eluded the soldier.

❝ do you really 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄 that ? ❞ they ask, seemingly innocuous question in reply to other's assertion. it's not the first time that they've let him close following a hard night, but it is the first that they've actively sought him out for comfort, & he must be reeling with what that 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐒 right about now. it's a sentiment that seems pleasant, but which strikes them overall as foolish : they're meant to be someone who does not bow to the varieties of emotion, the ebb & flow of humanity. they're meant to be beyond, even 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐕𝐄, it all. (they don't know if they've ever believed that themselves, but it's what others have told them for as long as they can remember.) ❝ thank you, ❞ they say finally, stiltedly, as if the act of providing gratitude is something novel ― and it is. ❝ we're not so sure about that, ourselves. ❞
