thoughts on "tradwives" as a 19th-century social historian
It's great until it's not.
It's great until he develops an addiction and starts spending all the money on it.
It's great until you realize he's abusive and hid it long enough to get you totally in his power (happened to my great-great-aunt Irene).
It's great until he gets injured and can't work anymore.
It's great until he dies and your options are "learn a marketable skill fast" or "marry the first eligible man you can find."
It's great until he wants child #7 and your body just can't take another pregnancy, but you can't leave or risk desertion because he's your meal ticket.
It's great until he tries to make you run a brothel as a get-rich-quick scheme and deserts you when you refuse, leaving your sisters to desperately fundraise so your house doesn't get foreclosed on (happened to my great-great-aunt Mamie).
It's great until you want to leave but you can't. It's great until you want to do something else with your life but you can't. It's great. Until. It's. Not.
I won't lie to you and say nobody was ever happy that way. Plenty of women have been, and part of feminism is acknowledging that women have the right to choose that sort of life if they want to.
But flinging yourself into it wholeheartedly with no sort of safety net whatsoever, especially in a period where it's EXTREMELY easy for him to leave you- as it should be; no-fault divorce saves lives -is naive at best and dangerous at worst.
Have your own means of support. Keep your own bank account; we fought hard enough to be allowed them. Gods willing, you never need that safety net, but too many women have suffered because they needed it and it wasn't there.

Would you be ok with indivituals using some of your fallouty unique deathclaws and other creature drawings as references when theyre running a private Fallout TTRPG campaign amongst friends?
Totally ok if youre not fine with that! I just wanted to check.
it may be possibly time for another long-winded explanation that will enrage precisely two people who will send me weird anon hate over it because they don't understand the notion of transformative works but - It's hard to state in plain terms what I am and aren't comfortable with people using my art for, because even for me there's a lot of handwavey 'am i really uncomfortable with this or is it just a kneejerk reaction' kind of thing with a lot of caveats
there's often a pretty big disconnect between what people view as references - some people will view it as a single image, like "for reference, this is what it looks like" and slap the art down on the table for their players to go WHOAAAA over (repost blogs tend to do this). For an artist doing this, it's usually as a study, or results in a pretty obvious 1:1 because the idea they're pulling from isn't diluted across a range of things.
The other use of reference is several images and enough of your own personal touch to put a unique spin on all of them in a cohesive artwork or design. This is the bit that a lot of people stumble over, because they go 'but I like this thing only' and don't want to venture beyond that. If you're able to not only pull a range of artworks, but a range of artworks by different artists, immense kudos to you. The way I construct deathclaws is from an immense knowledge of weird animals and different media. For instance, Spectral makes use of a deathclaw, a ghost leviathan from subnautica, a xenomorph, and the understanding of vestigial limbs, bioluminescence, diaphanized tissue, and opalization. Transforming this in a tabletop might therefore look like the image itself, but then adding say the aquatic spinosaurus theory in there and making it swim out of an irradiated lake with a paddle tail and a huge back crest. And a bigger mouth with worse teeth that can strip a human's arm down to the bone in one degloving bite. You don't necessarily have to be able to draw it (I'm in a bit of a niche and therefore shouldn't hold everyone to my same standards) but it also says good things about your ability to host a tabletop game if you're able to be creative with the unique ideas you put in it and your ability to visualize and describe them. Embrace that. (Some of the kickback against this was people going 'well artists do this all the time, they take other artists' works for their references, that's part of the industry standard' but that's the point of transformative works and not typically modern tabletop gaming. I'm also just one person doing this. I'm not an industry professional, I'm not a huge company for which my works are publicly available in an immensely popular IP. It may be fanart and I don't own deathclaws, but I still own all rights to the art itself. Some people (that one really furiously angry anon in particular) hold me to the same standard as if I was representative of Bethesda Softworks itself and therefore it's right and proper to take my shit, because it's deathclaws, and all deathclaws are Bethesda's, and I wouldn't be this popular without that, I should expect people to take my stuff, it's the internet - I am just one person making fanart. and I am very tired.) I think the biggest problem I have with people taking my designs for TTRPG assets is that it's the only reaction they have sometimes. the 'wow cool! can I take this?' reaction akin to a little child shoving things in their mouth. That doesn't reflect well on you, and for the artist it doesn't feel good. And most tabletop gaming these days is casual sessions that usually center around getting the campaign itself done with little creativity beyond what the players bring to the table, which results in using other peoples' art they found on google without being creative about it at all, which is why you'll see a lot of artists who have beef with it, because it also doesn't feel good. All this to say - if you ask and are respectful and credit back, it still feels weird to me, but like... sure! I do this for fun and to express creativity, so if it encourages other people to also have fun and express their creativity, I'd feel bad saying no to an earnest request! It's fanart, we're all fans here, etc But also most people who aren't respectful won't ask, won't be creative, or will get mad when I say Can You Don't, so I'm kinda preaching to the wrong crowd here - to those people, you're right, I can't stop you from doing it anyway. but it will not put you in my good books

The most bonkers moment in Earthspark doesn't involve a villain or a fight, it's when the animators tried to pass off a deformed goldfinch as a trumpeter swan

Waiting for a call about paying my tribal enrollment fee (I'm not worried, it was submitted at the beginning of the month and processing is 6-9 weeks) but that means that I'm actually answering unknown numbers and realizing how many of them are medical debt collectors.

it's wild talking to liberals because i said something like, "isn't it fucked up how this huge percent of living spaces in urban areas are rented and not owned" and someone snaps back with "no actually it's GOOD because people who work in big cities are constantly turning over their jobs and coming and going and migrating anyway and so there NEEDS to be a big renting population to accommodate them!"
my good bitch...why do you think they're constantly turning over their jobs and coming and going and NOT settling down...? *gasp* it couldn't possibly be the lack of affordable housing!

#I've had the most incredible couple years career wise#and like there have been some pitfalls etc#but like overall the amount of growth and how much money I've saved and established myself financially is insane#it would send 2019 me into a fucking coma#but everything and I mean EVERYTHING is just tumbling down down down#idk how I feel about touring I can't decide#and the music industry is dead until March anyway#my Etsy shop is effectively dead#I just lost a graphic design gig and like the person they hired instead of me did an undeniably 10x better job#and I feel like I have kind of lost the language in that regard like I used to feel like I was pretty Up There in terms of skill#but Ive just fallen very far behind people as new technology becomes available and I don't adapt and I lose track of where to get assets et#and couldnt find them if I did because. algorithm and social feeds and how rapidly we are losing the ability to archive in this internet ag#this is also true for my photo work and editing#so I genuinely don't know WHERE people are learning from#and idek WHERE to go to learn to get my knowledge up to date bc all search engines are bad and fucking algorithm-y#it's been too long since I've bartended I feel like I've lost the muscle memory of those skills#and idk if I could get rehired at a place like my bar in Melbourne short of a miracle because that whole place in my life WAS a miracle#and like idk what tf to do#I feel like I'm just floating through time and space with absolutely no purpose right now#and no income either! like what the fuck do I even do#how tf do I even fix this when I feel completely directionless#and all the things that fuel me have dried up?#and after how good things have been and how BAD things were for me 5 years ago#I like physically cannot process how fast I am free falling down down down rn#like I am headed towards that again pretty fucking rapidly and I can't even wrap my head around it

i wish there was more in the whole shepp thing,, even the character just bringing it up would be nice lol sometimes i forget that was a thing i had to do and considering it was like. The quest for the ceremony and took a long time? boooooooo
here are some ideas/wants i have!! going down in how hard it would be for the devs to add
a special quest with the shepp where you go on a little adventure and they have dialogue teaching you about majiri and kilima culture (and maybe their paths/interests too). ideally this would work similarly to the temple quests where you get to unlock a new place. maybe add a building that you can't get into until you complete the ceremony and fully become part of the kilima community? visit another town? idk man just something nice and rewarding
a separate shepp relationship level alongside the friendship and romance ones. it would just be with your shepp (obviously), and increasing it would involve conversing with them using the shepp option (dialogue would include teaching you about majiri & kilima culture, their path, their life experiences and beliefs, etc) and Maybe leveling up in their path if that's possible with them (ex: reth with cooking). for certain levels you get gifts that are unique to the character and their path. this would incentivize players to really think about who they want their shepp to be and not just choose their fav blorbo!
you talk to them after the ceremony and they gift you a placeable guidebook about majiri and kilima culture that they wrote themselves (so unique to each character's personality) and that you can actually read (like the books that you can read around the map)
a weekly challenge related to their path/interest. i'm not sure how they'd implement this for characters like caleri or chayne since their paths aren't part of the gameplay like cooking for ex but,, it'd be cool lol maybe for those characters they could add like a,,, talk to that character x amount of times challenge?
add casual dialogue centered around them being your shepp like "hey remind me to teach you about this thing" or "have you heard about this thing that we do" or "hey you've learned a lot blahblahblah" and maybe dialogue from other characters about them being your shepp (similar to the romance ones). they could give their opinions on that character or even ask you how it's going
literally bro just anything it's so weird to me that this was SO important at the beginning and so meaningless immediately afterwards. please devs pleasepleaseplease
