What the worksite looks like in action 💪 . Our volunteers will help with the grunt work, like making the cement! Since we are not skilled builders ourselves, we leave the structural building up to the local engineers. . Along with the community members also apart of our projects, many hands are apart of making it successful! All working side-by-side to maintain sustained project management locally and seeing it through to completion. . Swipe to see this home compeled in less than three weeks! 🙌 . #givenicaragua #givevolunteers #volunteerabroad #teamhuman #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment #communitydevelopment #empowerthecommunity #travelwithpurpose (at Jiquilillo, Chinandega, Nicaragua) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bznpl0BH6AC/?igshid=fqd87315uq6o

Advice from Zita Cobb Of @fogoislandinn - if we have labelling of nutritional value on something like a tea bag , why don't we hold our other suppliers/ products to a similar standard? When you buy a chair, where was it made, and where did the money go? Fogo and #shorefastfoundation focus on #community and #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment . The women of Kairo are becoming quite the strong entrepreneurs 👊 . Over the years, these women have expressed that they would like more opportunities to make their own income. So without hesitation, we are ALL IN on the female empowerment wave happening in the village. . The women students are now selling their own handmade soaps, teaching weaving classes, and offering henna to earn an income! . Our volunteers are now offering beginner businesses classes for the women to build more knowledge in how to grow their entrepreneurial initiatives. We are SO stoked to be apart of their journey! . 📷 : @lauraaasloan #givetanzania #givevolunteers #empowerwomen #educatewomen #girlpower #femaleentrepreneurs #volunteerabroad #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Zanzibar, Tanzania) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx-g840nvDZ/?igshid=ymjr6l2f7gtj

Our Zanzibar boys are being trained in permaculture farming!!! 🌱 Take a look at the photos sent over to us today from their permaculture course! . We are starting a permaculture garden at our partnering school, Skuli Ya Kairo GIVE! 🙌 We are so thrilled for the opportunity our students will have to learn how to grow their own food and eat nutritiously. And most importantly, that there will be sustainable leadership of this project year-round. . Lots of good vibes to MC, Boi, Ibro, and Juma! We can’t wait to get this project started! . #givetanzania #givevolunteers #gogreen #permaculturegarden #permaculturecourse #localleaders #growyourownfood #bethechange #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Zanzibar, Tanzania) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv4pXy9gepw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pfqa7b9op2w

The roots of change. What does that mean? By no means are we the heroes in this story of community development. The roots of change develops and flourishes with the community leaders. . In order to develop these roots & achieve sustainable travel internationally, GIVE has adopted the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model, which is a set of proven best practices in sustainable development that mobilized a community’s own assets and resources as the basis for development. . Much like our Laos program coordinator, Touy, in this photo laying eco-bricks for the dorms, he is the leader & we are assistances financially and physically to create opportunity. . Our volunteers are the supporters and learners through this whole process. We are all Team Human, mobilizing positive change. . 📷 : @jacobonahill #givelaos #givevolunteers #volunteerabroad #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment #internationaldevelopment #empowerchange #sustainabletravel #ecobricks #teamhuman #travelwithpurpose #goabroad (at Ban Sôpchèm, Louangphabang, Laos) https://www.instagram.com/p/BthEU6_gI_e/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1czt7rcwrm9lv

What’s more empowering than learning how to grow your own food? Teaching a schooL OF KIDS to grow their own nutritious food! And sustain its growth after our volunteers leave. . The permaculture plot in Thailand is continuing to grow and prosper, thanks to the local leadership within the community! 🌱 We recently started another perm plot and plan for it to be as epic and abundant as the first! . Who is as stoked on perm as we are?! 🌿🥕🌾🍌🥭 . 📷 : @yunglili_ #givethailand #givevolunteers #growyourownfood #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment #permaculture #permaculturedesign #permaculturefarm #alwayslearning #travelwithpurpose #volunteerabroad (at Muang Khong, Sisaket, Thailand) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtG4DWHgq83/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jmq3atc98q5v

With the goal of making a sustainable impact abroad, it's essential to pursue a path of development initiated by the community themselves. GIVE's programs are rooted in the practice of Asset Based Community Development. What is that exactly? We're glad you asked! . The theory behind Asset Based Community Development is grounded in the idea that community empowerment happens from the inside out. It ascribes to the belief that communities are strong and full of individuals who are very capable of helping themselves and their fellow community members reach their goals. While the ABCD Model acknowledges that some outside assistance may be necessary at times, permanent positive change will not be achieved without the community taking primary ownership of driving this change. . GIVE guide, @jakewmuniak, was featured as a guest writer on the @gotravelandtalk blog highlighting how Asset Based Community Development. To read how this method has proven to be effective in bringing sustained opportunity in our partnering communities, find the link in our IG story. . 📷 : @danihavel featuring the legend Ay’Phon of our GIVE Laos program . #givelaos #givevolunteers #gotravelandtalk #volunteerabroad #responsiblevolunteering #sustainabledevelopment #communityempowerment #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Ban Sôpchèm, Louangphabang, Laos) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8KiBYTnVG4/?igshid=1mzs5u92hkg3o

Studies show that educated woman is most likely to invest back into her family. To earn an income that supports the health and education of her own children. We are very proud that this space has allowed for the women of Kairo to have a choice to pursue further education or go back to school. Development like that doesn’t come without the initiative from the community themselves. We are thrilled to grow and learn together through these years and years to come. . . . #givevolunteers #givetanzania #educatewomen #educatedwomen #empowerwomen #womenempowerment #womenleaders #zanzibarwomen #accessibleeducation #volunteerabroad #responsibletravel #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Zanzibar, Tanzania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6tV0CEnRMw/?igshid=19yg71n8iorad

Our permaculture farms in Thailand are thriving thanks to our local leaders! 🙌 🌱 . Here are photos of P’Somchai’s farm & the Wangmariew’s agricultural center! Since our volunteers left in August, there has been a wealth of growth due to the outstanding community ownership. . Shout out to GIVE legend, P’Au, for sharing these photos and overseeing the maintenance of our projects in Muang Khong. And big love to our leaders Kru Ratchagan, P’Pat, P’Pong, and P’Somchai for keeping things green in the off-season! . Our Permaculture Director, Dave, says, “The soil biology will only improve, this will attract the curiosity of outside locals, and hopefully cause a change of heart. Healthy food leads to healthy body. Food security leads to peace of mind. There is more to be done but we have all contributed to a force of positive direction.” . Our next round of volunteers arrive in Thailand tomorrow! We can’t wait for them to contribute more progress alongside the community. . #givethailand #givevolunteers #permaculture #organicfarm #sustainableagriculture #localownership #responsibletravel #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Muang Khong, Sisaket, Thailand) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6EWfRBHtaw/?igshid=ghk41ecs8p2t

Swipe to see the progression of the Langtang community school reconstruction ➡️ . The 2015 earthquake triggered a massive landslide in the valley of the Langtang community. They haven’t had a school in their village for the past four years, so the children live far away from home to get an education. . When GIVE collaborated with the community leaders, they expressed the goal of reconstructing the school to bring their children back to receive an education in their home village. . So in June, the team hit the ground running! Our volunteers assisted the local engineers to have a lot of hands on deck to efficiently complete the construction. And folks, we did it! . The Langtang community has accessible education again, setting a strong foundation for a future of growth. . Interested in partnering with communities to achieve their development goals? Our Nicaragua program made a major accomplishment this summer of building a home from start to finish. . Our GIVE volunteers worked alongside the Jiquilillo community to build a home for Doña Socorro who had been waiting for a home for over 13 months. She is the mother of a family who lost their home due to rising sea levels. . Everyday, Doña Socorro showed up giving it her all and working alongside our volunteers. Our volunteers from beginning to end were really able to see what it takes to build a home. We put in long hours alongside Dona Socorro and the engineers to complete this project - without them we truly would have not accomplished any of this. Now this family is living full-time in this home! . Yes we built a house together, but more importantly this team built a sense of community. . Swipe through the photos to see the project from start to finish! . #givevolunteers #givenicaragua #discovernicaragua #physicalcapital #volunteerabroad #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Jiquilillo, Chinandega, Nicaragua) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2HnwErHp9N/?igshid=16p4nuvqz1pv9

Namaste from Nepal 🙏 this summer was an incredible season of building many forms of physical infrastructure and social capital. We’re excited to share what we accomplished alongside our partnering communities of Gorkha & Langtang! . The Paslang village of Gorkha was at the epicenter of the 2015 earthquake. This destroyed 30 of 32 homes in this community, taking their means of shelter and source of income through home-stays. . Through our first year of partnership, the community requested support in restoring their homes in order for them to recreate this hub of home-stays for tourists. So we pulled up our sleeves, grabbed our shovels and got to work! . With the Paslang community members, local engineers, and our volunteers working together - all 32 homes have been restored again! 🙌 With the additional project to update the Community Center where gathering are hosted and women cook together. . The second half our summer was spent in the Langtang Valley 🏔 Due to a massive landslide in the valley, their school was damaged and unable to host students any more. The community initiated the process to restore the primary school with the help of our volunteers, officially completing the school - now the only school in the region, with the ability for children to return to their homes and receive an accessible education again. . With providing education opportunities and infrastructure, these two communities are on the rise to gain control of their own economy and future again. We are so thrilled to learn from these resilient communities and excited to see where their leadership continues to take them in their development 🌱 . Double tap to send a virtual high five to these projects! 🖐 . #givenepal #givevolunteers #rebuildnepal #responsibletravel #empowerothers #volunteerabroad #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Nepal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2FVTaNnLxm/?igshid=20gqo8pmdlyx

Oooh man. What another amazing summer in Sop Chem. Are you wondering what we accomplished in our Laos program these past few months? We’ve got a full update for ya!👇 . We made insane progress with the permaculture plot in the community! Starting from scratch from a bare piece of land, we cleared and mulched with the chop & drop method! Next we dug a swale to stop, spread, and sink water throughout the plot (swipe to see the beaut!). With time, we were able to plant and harvest our own ORGANIC FOOD 🙌 . A highlight of the summer was selling this first harvest at a subsidized cost to the community, offering accessible and nutritional foods to this remote community for the first time ever. . Within the education program, we’ve implemented agricultural learning within our English classes. The students have made so much progress with their English skills this summer! . We are so proud to expand education opportunities to ensure literacy among all our students, everyone is at a point now where they have the foundational skill of reading. We had our first men’s class ever! And our advanced students have blown us away, excelling in conversation & grammar. . We offer an attendance-based system to qualify for financial support in education. This season, 90% of our English students received the top scholarship to fund their school supplies! As well as three full scholarships to Khmu students in the village. These students are eager to grow their education opportunities and we are here to cheer them on! . Seriously, what an incredible time of planting seeds and growing the roots of change. Comment a the love for the Sop Chem community below! . #givevolunteers #givelaos #communitydevelopment #responsibletravel #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment (at Ban Sôpchèm, Louangphabang, Laos) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2AOjH-Hxl8/?igshid=t0rz4zjj28ml

This is Ay’Phon. Most may know him as a GIVE Laos legend and local guide, but his achievements and good vibes span much farther. . Ay-Phon is a new father, adventurer extraordinaire, and proud Khmu man. In between his worksite games, insightful Lao/Khmu language lessons, and sharing laughs with our volunteers, Ay’Phon spreads his positivity through that big ol’ smile of his! . If you’re comin’ to Laos, he will be guiding our volunteers on the worksite, in cultural activities, and contributing to the learning opportunities within group discussions. . He is someone that brings the best out of everyone he meets and we are incredibly humbled to work with such a benevolent guide, teacher, and father. We’re lucky to have you in the team Ay’Phon! . #givelaos #givevolunteers #localleaders #assetbasedcommunitydevelopment #immersivetravel #volunteerabroad (at Louang Prabang, Louangphabang, Laos) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz02EPrnKJ9/?igshid=t7vw0cd7tljd
