New Hollow Knight OC (because I have a problem) Please say hello... to TYNE! (and Chk!)
I have had a long standing problem of never really being able to connect with vessel ocs myself. I LOVE other people's, and I love interacting with others' vessels, but I just never could make one 'click' for me. That's since changed with Tyne though I think, and their maskfly companion :)
Tyne is a very heavily root-influenced vessel, and during their journey from the abyss, they found themselves wandering through Greenpath. Due to the nature of their inherent god-magic, Tyne used to spread the white-bulbed plants that you see in the Queen's Gardens, which I HC are related to the White Lady. Unn took notice of WL's influence spreading into her lands, and went... None of that please-- and gently coaxed Tyne to the depths of her domain, where she could confine them.
Unn didn't have it in her to cull this little vessel, both as a life goddess and as a goddess uncertain of the political ramifications of murdering your allies' weird child. But she couldn't let them continue to spread WL's essence into greenpath either. So, Tyne grew up in the barrows of Greenpath, with Unn as more or less a maternal figure in their lives. They grew to have a great awareness and fondness for her nature, her green dreaming, and when they were able to form their own thoughts on the matter... Asked Unn if she could take away WL's influence. So they would stop hurting her greenpath.
Unn agreed, and burned away the White Lady's pale light with her own acid. Tyne's branches have been burned off to avoid them growing uncontrollably again, and their right 'eye socket' is the site in which Unn poured forth her magic into them. Their mask/shell is the warped texture of burned wood, though they still retain the pale coloration inherent to all vessels.
Once they were no longer propagating the White Lady's magic, Tyne was welcomed into Greenpath by Unn. They consider her their mother and patron goddess, and as such, Tyne stays within her greenpath, defending it from all who would see harm done to it.
They have a deep curiosity about animals and beasts, and often prefer them over people. Tyne's maskfly, Chk, is named so because 'Chk!' is one of the few audible sounds Tyne is able to produce to call it.
Tyne also has a mix of Unn's magic in their void abilities, and manifests thorn whips instead of tentacles, and can spit acid similar to an aspid.

ive been playing an absurd amount of risk of rain lately and ive started to wonder about a BW au where they ended up on petrichor V (maybe the preds replacing the contact light and the maximals replacing safe travels?) so heres my altmode ideas for the cast
rattrap: blind vermin > spitter
depth charge: one of the wandering vagrant variants (maybe the juveniles from the first game)
inferno: beetle guard (megatron has the queens gland?)
megatron: scorch wurm > magma worm > gilded wurm
dinobot: elder lemurian (dinobot II can be acrid cause i love acrid)
optimus primal: stone golem > stone titan > aurelionite (he fuses with him instead of prime)
tigatron: mini mushrum
airrazor: swift/alloy vulture
tigerhawk: kur ska the heretic (idk just makes sense to me)
cheetor: wisp > greater wisp > ancient wisp
rampage: void devastator (sand crab could work too but i wanted him to be a boss to point out his power)
blackarachnia and tarantulas: mechanical spiders
waspinator: aspid
terrorsaur: blind pest (different from vermin, pests are fliers)
quickstrike: lemurian calvary
silverbolt: evolved lemurian
scorponok: sand crab
ravage: imp
rhinox: bighorn bison
i mightve forgotten one or two of them.. oops

Holidays of Hallownest
So I just saw an absolutely gorgeous art piece by @mebis-art-dump which in addition to be being completely fantastic(please check them out) also asked about what holidays Hallownest would practice. It really got me thinking.
Wyrmalia: Basically just a Saturnalia expy name wise but actually is pretty far diverged in practice. This is a holiday celebrating the death and the Wyrm and the rebirth of the king. During this holiday bugs swap out their masks for different ones and hold a small funeral for the previous owner of the mask they’re wearing. Generally the masks worn are those which belonged to dead family members. It’s thought by wearing their masks it gives them some semblance of life for a single day. During this time the mask wearer takes on the identity of their mask in full. It’s a celebration of past lives and accomplishments while also being a way to symbolically lay ghosts to rest.
The Festival of Lights: A celebration of the bright gods and higher beings of Hallownest. Pale lanterns are released into the city of tears to drift until the festival ends. Generally the festival lasts the equivalent of a week in our time. The King and Queen would generally make an appearance in the city and from there go on tour throughout Hallownest during this festival. It’s customary to burn small offerings to whatever higher being you follow in addition to the traditional sacrifices given to the king(generally some sort of live non sentient bug-some bugs believed a more vicious sacrifice like aspids or in rare circumstances garapedes would gain the kings favor.). During the festival most bugs would swap out their cloaks and clothing for brighter colors, and the upper class would generally wear pale cloaks.
Rootsday: A day celebrating the bountiful harvest the White Ladys boon provides. This is effectively thanksgiving and the feasts would generally last the entire day, with preparations being done in the weeks leading up to it. Unn actually benefits from some of the worship from this holiday as well. She was worshiped by many of the farmers of Hallownest in addition to the pale lights. Stuffed gruzzers and boiled gulka are staple foods of this holiday.
Dawnsday: Nearly completely erased by the Pale king in his effort to kill the radiance only a few faithful moths even remember this holiday. Those who do make a pilgrimage to the crown of Hallownest at dawn(or dusk) to worship at the last shrine to the old light. It’s said this holiday was originally a day where dreams and reality mixed and one’s wildest fantasies could come true, now it’s merely a way to keep the Radiance alive.
The Day of Sealing/Day of mourning: This holiday only came to exist after Hollow was sealed. All bugs in the kingdom wore black or pale white cloaks and went about the entirety of their day in silence. Not many bugs really knew what the holiday was for beyond paying their respects to the Hollow Knight and dreamers who had saved them from the infection. Silent prayer sessions for the Dreamers and Knight were held at the black egg temple. This holiday actually served as a supplemental means of strengthening the seals and prevent the dreamers from dying, the residual power of these prayers is what elevated Hollow to godhood and allowed the dreamers to persist past the fall of Hallownest. This holiday largely ceased to exist once the infection returned.
Deepnest has its own holidays too, but I think I’ll probably make a separate post for them and for greenpath and maybe dirtmouth.
Happy holidays y’all!!

Foods in Hallownest:
I don't know why I'm putting much thought into it but after writing a fic and writing a scene where two bugs are eating, and I kept writing what I think would be the Hallownest equivalent of some foods and what would even be eaten.
Crops:
I think that pretty much any fruit or vegetable that could be grown in most climates could be grown in Hallownest. For example: apples, pears, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, corn, ect. Pretty much anything that could be grown in the Midwest. Most of the crops are grown in Greenpath though some places can grow other stuff as well. Howling Cliffs could absolutely grow potatoes as potatoes like to grow everywhere. Dirtmouth could also grow potatoes along with wheat as soil in Dirtmouth is a bit better and it's less windy there. Ismas Grove and Queens Gardens grow special herbs used for medicines.
Meats:
Now figuring out what meats are eaten is a bit weird as bugs would be eating bugs but they aren't eating sentient bugs, but it's also not really canablism. Anyways here are bugs that would be eaten in Hallownest:
-tic tics
-crawlids
-aspids(not common as aspids are hard to cook. So pretty much the Hallownest equivalent to a pufferfish)
-Duranda
-mosscreeps(very unpopular as it is the Hallownest equivalent to eating a dog)
-vengflies
-Mawlk(not common and is equivalent to eating elk)
There are some location specific meats and meats that are only eaten on one location:
-dirt carver&hatchers(Deepnest)
-Garpede(Deepnest)
There are also some foods that are taken from other locations and hunted and are eaten by guards, office officials, or used for storage and rations:
-Hopper(kingdoms edge)
-Boofly(Kingdoms edge)
The only thing I can't really fit in is how Fungal Wastes fits into all of this as the Mantis Tribe is there and they are the only enemy in that section that is actually a bug. Everything else in that section is fungal based and mantises are carnivores. Sure they could eat their mate after doing it, but they aren't doing that often. My guess is that the Mantises travel to Deepnest(Illegally), or Greenpath to hunt.

Note
How many hours have you played hollow knight
I think its just over 18 hours now
(I dont exactly know how much of that was just me repeatedly losing to the False Knight and Hornet . I think I died to Hornet literally close to fifty times in a row before beating her)
Abd I havent even gotten to the HARD parts of the game (Path of Pain, Nightmare King Grimm, Radiance, Pantheon of Hallownest, etc)
Now imagine me trying to do this on STEEL SOUL, let alone SPEEDRUNNING it
But to be fair I am doing significantly better than my first playthrough of Hollow Knight back in like 2021
That playthrough was an absolute trainwreck.
I had played for about three hours and thirty eight minutes
And in that three hours and thirty eight minutes the only things I had DONE were get the Map and Quil, and defeat the three aspids outside the first hotspring.
And thats it.
I just kept running around lost like a dumbass for over three hours, constantly either going to the hotspring or to the Husk Guard above the Crystal Peak. Over and over again trying to find literally anywhere else to go
I didnt even get the Wayward compass because I kept dying and losing my shade the entire time so I couldnt get any money. And the worst part? I was hyperfixating so fucking hard on Hollow Knight that I SHOULD'VE had the map memorized
And yet I didnt
Because seventeen year old ace was very stupid.
So Im doing much better now (beaten the False knight and Hornet, got five charms, got the Vengeful Spirit and the Mantis Claw, got the Hunter's Journal, got maps for the Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath and the Fungal Wastes, I've been to the Fog Canyon and the Queen's station, I can kinda pogo now and if it werent for the Fungal Wastes being awful I wouldn't have lost my shade even once)

*cracks my writing knuckles bc my artistic patience isn’t enough to fill the ambiance and tone properly*
2K WORDS. JUST FOR YOU GUYS
Was their ire and spiteful nature exclusively directed at the Pale King? Some retainers of the palace would say yes. Others would object and say it extended to the Five Great Knights as well since Ogrim had yet to hold onto his charm for longer than a day and Hegemol continued to wield a pole instead of a mighty hammer.
Well if you asked the source, they would simply stare at you silently, but you might get the impression that they had strong opinions (a wild thing for a vessel to have) on a few individuals other than the King.
Which is why the Feral Vessel is currently running for their life with the Great Nailmaster Sly hot on their back.
“Give it back you impetuous brat!” Sly roars behind them as he bounces off the walls at unfathomable speeds. Ghost, now going by Feral, is only surviving thanks to their knowledge of Sly’s moves from the Godseeker’s Pantheons. Sly’s jumps are still wildly unpredictable to them, but their now longer legs help them meet the speed needed to dodge the flea’s grabs.
Why are they doing this in the first place?
Well because when a rule is made that the Feral Vessel isn’t allowed a nail in the palace, or in any location in Hollownest, the only reasonable way to follow that rule, if you are said Feral Vessel, is to obtain nails of increasing ridiculous sizes. They first took their sibling’s old nail after the Pure Vessel grew out of it, and then they continued from there. They thought of borrowing Sheo’s nail for a day, but they quickly realized after finding the three Nailmasters that they were still the three Nailstudents. They were adorable but small and didn’t have their nails.
So Sly was there and Feral had some lingering rage left over from the Pantheons and well, the decision wasn’t hard to make. Two aspids with one stone. Now they were finding out that conceptualizing that plan and executing that plan were completely different things.
How do they get him off their back!? They already tried losing him through the maze that is the White Palace but they could not build any distance between them and Sly to make the endless corners and hallways useful. They need something- anything-
A-HA! One of Hornet’s web traps! (ingenious sticky things that clung ruthlessly to the clothing of the royals that walked this palace.)
Feral musters up their soul to push themself into one last burst of speed. They dash over the top of the trap just as they hear Sly zooming right at their back. With a twist of their leg and a firm grip on the oversized nail they spin at the last moment and swat the flea with his own nail into the poorly hidden nest of sticky silk.
The indignant yell of rage made that whole marathon worth it.
Not wanting to squander their momentary freedom from Sly’s wrath, they quickly turn and hightail it out of there.
Left. Straight. Left. Right. Straight. Straight. Up. Up. Right. Left-
That should be enough, right? Feral slows down and leans against a wall to catch their breath. Great Pale Beings they have not felt that much adrenaline since the first time they danced with Grimm. They were safe, for now. Feral straightens up, adjusts the greatnail onto their back and looks around.
...
They glance back from where they came.
Where... is this? They know the palace like the back of their hand, even without the buzzsaws. This corridor isn’t familiar. There is only one open doorway with a shining pale light gently leaking into the tiled hallway. Curious yet cautious they approach. They had a sharp greatnail after all.
They step into the light and freeze as they see the towering form of the Queen leaning like a drifting tree over a lush bush. Her back was turned to them, maybe they could-
“Vessel,” her voice, even though a whisper is loud enough to seem like she’s speaking at normal volume. Feral had noticed that with all of the higher and pale beings they’ve known. They all whisper.
Still, they had conflicting feelings toward their mother that they hadn’t yet put into words. They were avoiding her. They still want to avoid her.
“Come, garden with me,” she says, not lifting her head an inch from her work. Feral itches to disobey, but the urge feels wrong. It doesn’t carry the same gleeful note that comes with directly ignoring the King’s orders. They don’t have a solid reason to dislike their mother and it doesn’t feel right to force one either.
It’s not often they feel hesitant, but the Queen has a fae-like air about her. She could hide cruel remarks in what seem to be compliments. They had seen her pick apart arguments to the letter until her opponent had nothing else to say. She wields her words like she would a nail, and a battlefield of diction is an area Feral is massively lacking in. Hopefully she doesn’t want much. Hopefully she wants them to retrieve some confusing herb or something.
Carefully, they enter the room— a green house— and slowly make their way over to the White Lady’s side. They peer over at what she’s tending to. It looks like a bundle of dozens of little blue buds. Her hands glow underneath and the flowers respond by drifting up gradually and opening their delicate petals.
Feral watches quietly.
“They are not what they make themself appear to be,” she says after a long pause. Feral tenses. She reaches to her side where a basket of tools hangs from a kingsmould that Feral didn’t realize was there and picks up a humorously small pair of scissors compared to her massive hands. She carefully begins to snip the bases of those small flowers, collecting them in one hand as they fall, “My senses may be fading as things do with time, but I am not yet so blind to see that they know things that they should not.”
Feral never tried to hide their emotions and personality when they emerged from the Abyss, but they found themself smothering their nervousness before it could leak out of them.
“… they are nervous?” The Queen finally turns to look at Feral with her slightly glassy blue eyes, “I did not intend my words to be a threat, but their reaction proves my thoughts correct.”
Feral maintains as much eye contact as they can before turning their gaze to the floor. The full force of a pale being’s attention wasn’t a thing most bugs could endure. She watches them. Silent. Considering.
“It is odd. I have wanted children of my own for so long, yet what I have received from this world is curious,” she turns back to the blue flowers and snips two more into her hand, “one offspring that is meant to be empty, yet wishes to be a child, and one offspring that acts like a child, yet has experienced more than a child should have.”
Feral feels an odd twisting in their gut. They want to leave, yet they now also want to stay. The Queen is perceptive, that was never a doubt and perhaps another reason why they avoided her. The fear of being known. Yet… now they are known and it’s more of a relief than anything. They slowly look back to her as she places the scissors back in the basket.
“I have wondered why, but I cannot come to a conclusion that satisfies me,” she places three flowers in her spare hand and begins to braid the stems, adding flowers as the braids start becoming short.
“Why do they hold their branch as if it were the familiar handle of a nail? Even though they are forbidden from holding their own?” More flowers are added into the craft she is making. It’s beginning to look circular. Feral watches quietly.
“How do they know to get charms and spells on their own?” She glances over at them, but doesn’t meet their eyes. They sense her gaze on their horns. She looks back down at the flowers and makes some sort of adjustment.
"Why do they stare at things that are not there?” Feral’s throat tightens with that question- or observation?
The Queen finally finishes whatever is in her hands and takes a step over to the Feral Vessel and leans down with an alien-like grace. Feral blinks as she threads the circle of flowers over their horns to then rest right at the base of their horns. They do not know why she is doing this, but they would not dare fight it. They have no desire to.
Her hands drift down from their horns to their face to gently cup and hold. Their eyes gently flutter. The warmth from her root palms seep into their mask as if they were sitting in a hot spring. With the warmth comes a feeling of peace. Understanding. Their eyes close and before they can catch themself they lean into her touch. They miss how her eyes soften as she rubs one of her thumbs against their temple.
“I thought I had been mistaken before, but I have noticed that their pranks on my beloved Wyrm have grown half hearted,” Feral’s chest sags in a mock-sigh and, not knowing why, they nod.
“Has the novelty of his frustrated yells gone stale?” They shake their head, shoulders lightly quivering as if laughing. They crack their eyes open to catch the end of a smile from their mother.
“Why is it then? Why have they lost their fire?”
Feral stays silent as that was all they can do, but the tightening of their brow and the way they pull away from the warm comfort of their mother’s hands speaks hundreds of unspoken words. They glance at their hands, clenching and unclenching them.
When they re-awoke at the bottom of the Abyss surrounded by the thousands of masks of their dead siblings they thought they had dream nailed the black egg at the bottom of the Abyss again, though they did not know how. Soon they realized after getting to the top alongside their sibling that it was not a dream, but reality. To their delight, they could act on their spans of anger and spite they had toward the Pale King.
They thought that once they had their fun they would go and defeat the Radiance by finding the Godseeker in the trash pit. They would scale the pantheons and destroy the infection before the Pure Vessel was sentenced to waste away in the Temple of the Black Egg. It was simple so they didn’t think hard about it.
Until they realized they didn’t have the dream nail. They stressed for a bit, but then thought they could go find the seer and ask for it again! When they made their way to the Resting Grounds however, her little burrow was nowhere to be seen. They truly panicked then, scouring Hollownest for any moths they could find, but the few ones they found were not the Seer. When they held up their, admittedly, crude drawings of the dream nail they were met with confused stares.
They felt scared, frustrated, anger, desperation and then numbness.
They had been trying to run away from these thoughts, but now they were back and plainly showing on their face for the Queen to read like a tablet. There is a long silence between them before her melody-like voice whispers once more.
“Do they know how to write?” She asks.
They shake their head. No. They barely knew how to read and that was from noticing patterns in the tablets and signs they stumbled across in Hollownest. The Queen stands up and with her Feral’s eyes follow.
“I will teach you my child. Come, and perhaps while you learn you may give me your name. Feral is such a harsh word to be called by.”
Feral watches the White Lady as she walks deeper into the greenhouse. Did she just… say she was going to teach them how to write? They would never have a voice to speak on their own with, but to have the power of script in their grasp…
Excitement sparks their step as they quickly run back to her side, looking up at her with such strong wonder that she can’t believe she ever doubted her offspring weren’t hollow. The crown of flowers bounce on their head with each eager step.
“Now it will take some time for us to get the right writing utensils, but perhaps the first thing you could tell me when you can write is how you got that massive nail on your back.”

hmm, well I would think that most Hallownest bugs that live in Forgotten Crossroads would have a more meat heavy diet, seeing as there isn't a whole lot of plant life there, same for Dirtmouth. Greenpath recipes would probably have a lot more fruit and vegetables in them, because I'd be surprised if there wasn't tons of edible plants there. Maybe they have a nice stew recipe. Meanwhile a hive cookbook probably calls for a lot of honey, and maybe bugs living in kingdoms edge? like hoppers. Now-
[ -I wonder what aspids would taste like now, are they poisonous? Are the yummy? (is it like a juice box to some bugs) Do you think there are recipes that call for the more sentient bugs as well, like ants or bees or pillbugs? What if certain bugs are considered a delicacy in some places due to how rare they are? What if Tiso is considered a delicacy in some places, oh god. -Weird Headcanons Anon ]
Yeah, if there were any plants, most had been gotten rid of after the roads were paved in. The bugs could just go get things from Greenpath instead. The Queen’s Gardens were off limits for harvesting from, at least to the majority of bugs.
The Hive is mostly honey, yeah. But hivelings will come back with plants and meat, which can then be added.
Before the infection, aspid juice was probably close to something like alcohol, or even something carbonated like soda. Right now it’s not a good idea to drink the aspid juice. It tastes like rotten oranges.
There are probably recipes that call for sentient bugs, Deepnest has them, the Hunter came up with some, and it’s possible even the Mantises have some.
According to idiotwithnointerests, Tiso is a delicacy you can prepare with 2 easy steps. Don’t eat him. Spit him out right now.

Ok Here’s that Hollow Knight Four Swords AU heehee
So basic gist of this is what the Four Swords crew would be like if they were bugs in Hallownest! (This AU would lie just before the infection starts up, and then cut to in-game) I’ll put this under a read more because whew boy did I pour out my soul into this
First lets start off with Green!
I’m thinking that he’d either be a Mantis, or a leafbug, def something green (but lets go with leafbug for now)
I think he’d live in Greenpath (heh) helping out the Mosskins just to make sure that the pilgrims traveling to the City of Tears don’t go where they’re not supposed to
He’s helpful though! offering up his services as a guide if anyone got lost
He’s loyal to Unn, because he got separated from his parents when they were travelling to the City and a few Mosskins adopted him instead. So they taught him to be wary of Hallownest and its King
He learned how to wield a Nail from them and also uses a shellwood sheild.
Once the Infection starts up, he and the Mosskin family that adopted him decided to try to travel deeper into Greenpath, thinking that the Infection was caused by contact with other bugs, not dreams
Sadly, the Mosskins he was with ultimately fell to the Light, and left him alone to fend for himself.
He then keeps to himself, thinking that he’s better alone (Kinda like the start of the Manga when he’s just Link) until he ventures out of Greenpath and stumbles into Blue! They fight until they both realize that neither of them are infected.
He tries to stick with Blue, because he really doesn’t know the biomes of Hallownest that well, but they butt heads often.
Now onto Blue!
Blue in this AU is a Blue Mud Dauber
He lived in the Hive, then later in Kingdom’s Edge where he would test his strength in the Coliseum of Fools
He’s still arrogant and a bit hot headed, so he decided to leave the Hive since he kept butting heads with Hive Knight on how to be a better guard.
He first trained in the Hive using a stinger weapon (Like Hive Knight) before picking up a club when one of the challengers from CoF died
I feel like he and Oro would get along somewhat, though Blue doesn’t appreciate how training is behind a pay wall of Geo that he just doesn’t have.
He would occasionally fight in the CoF just to prove that he’s strong, but he’s stopped at the first trial (He’s still young and a lil bit scared of what would happen if he lost)
Once the Infection started up, Blue decides to steer clear of the CoF due to the fact that more Fools started being hyper-aggressive in the fights, so he looked for a better place to go that wouldn’t kill him (He doesn’t know where to go though, so he decides he’s going to leave Hallownest entirely to go look for another fight ring)
He found a way into the Royal Waterways through Isma’s Grove (Though it wasn’t called that just yet) and into the Fungal Wastes near Mantis Territory
He skirted the Mantis Village (This would be the time that the Traitor Lord split from the other Mantises) and found himself at the entrance to Greenpath from Fog Canyon
That’s where he stumbles into Green and they spar, he then tells Green to get lost before continuing his travels (With Green following behind lol)
Next up we got Red!
Red is a ladybug (I couldn’t find a better bug but if anyone else has a better idea for Red please let me know!)
He grew up in Dirtmouth as an orphan due to a mining accident killing his parents as they worked in Crystal Peaks
Luckily he was taken care of by the town and he became a baker’s apprentice
(Ok I like to think that the Grimm Troupe came to Hallownest before the Knight summoned them since Grimm knows about the vessel plan)
When Grimm and his Troupe pay a visit to Hallownest, Red was one of the only bugs brave enough to see one of their shows.
He became absolutely enchanted by the circus and it left an impression on him
When the infection hits his mentor and kills them, leaving Red without a job or a home, he decided to join the Grimm Troupe
When he does, he’s given a mask and a new name “Rouge” and learns how to be a fire dancer.
Rouge is a bit more daring that Red was, trying out highly dangerous stunts, but he’s still a kind soul, helping out to pitch tents or help mend costumes or cook food for the Troupe.
His primary weapon as Rouge is a Flame Staff
Once the Grimm Troupe is summoned by the Knight, Rouge is tasked with collecting Nightmare Flames for the Ritual.
(This is going to go through the Banishment Route just so that there’s an excuse for why Red stays behind) When the Knight banishes the Grimm Troupe, both Brumm and Rouge stay behind in Hallownest as Nymm and Red because of Red’s attachment to Dirtmouth (Ig? Idk I just need Red to stay)
As he now has no memories of either his past or his time with the Troupe, he decides to stay in Dirtmouth and sometimes wander into the Forgotten Crossroads before it gets infected.
He meets up with Blue and Green when they make it up to Dirtmouth for a supply run, and he decides to travel with them (much to Blue’s chagrin)
He’s still a capable fighter! Now he wields a staff he made from the metal scraps from ruins of the old village in the Crossroads
Now for Vio!
Vio is a Purple Emperor Butterfly
He lived in the City of Tears as a burgeoning scholar, planning to work for Monomon’s Archives once he was done with his studies.
He prefers being alone, holed up in a library pouring over the history of Hallownest.
When the infection starts up and the City is blocked off from the rest of Hallownest, Vio panics and decides to hole up in his apartment until the hysteria calms down.
Once most of the panic dies down, there’s a big struggle over finding supplies and food among the citizens of the City, with the nobility hogging most of it
In the scuffles, Vio stumbles into the Soul Sanctum, hoping that the Sanctum has food/supplies
He instead finds a container, and in that container is a Shade, a near to melting Shade
He decides to break it out of the container it was in as a sort of act of pity, and gets the hell out of the Sanctum, not knowing that he was followed...
(I’ll explain why Shadow can do all this stuff once we get to them but) It turns out that the Shade he freed now resided in his shadow as he traveled into to the Ancient Basin after stealing a Tram Pass and traveling to Kingdom’s Edge
He finally notices Shadow and promptly freaks out but slowly learns that Shadow is just chillin, and he tries to communicate with them to an extent of charades
They soon become good friends, with Vio telling them stories about the different subjects he learned about and Shadow trying to mime out what had happened to them, causing Vio to learn that their shell had split open and they needed a new mask to keep staying alive outside of their container
Not to mention that Vio started experiencing Void exposure due to Shadow leeching off of his life force to stay corporeal (Like the Bug from the Queen’s Garden, the “Too long spent together we became as one”)
So now with the both of them up against the clock, Vio decides to do something hella risky, head to Deepnest where the supposed “Mask Maker” lived and hoped that a new mask would save the both of them
They head to Deepnest, almost die, but make it to the Mask Maker where it seemed that he was already expecting them.
Bada-bing bada-boom, Shadow now has a new mask and a new form, and Vio stops feeling the effects of Void exposure
They both decide to go up and out exploring, hoping to leave Hallownest behind
So they travel together, and actually run into Blue, Green and Red in Dirtmouth, and decide to stay for a bit to at least advise them of the dangers deeper below.
Oh before I forget, Vio wields a crossbow, and practiced target shooting on the Primal Aspids in Kingdom’s Edge (hehe)
They join the little band of travelers and wham! Four Swords Squad is united
Now onto our final character, Shadow!
Shadow is a vessel! They have two horns on their head that curve in a wave behind (Like his hat in the Manga)
Shadow actually escaped the Abyss after it was sealed, since they hatched after the Pure Vessel ascended, they along with a few others took the tunnels out into Deepnest.
They encountered Nosk before simply running out of its lair, not looking back to see if their siblings needed help (It’s not because they’re cruel, it was simply a flight reflex taking over before helping type thing)
They somehow slipped into the tram and ended up in the Ancient Basin and into the City of Tears.
None paid them any mind because no one knew what Vessels were except for the Dreamers. So they slunk around the City just marveling at all the new senses they were experiencing
But there's a reason that Vio finds them as a Shade. They had just so happened to be near the Soul Sanctum when they were captured by its denizens
Vaati (Yes he’s here but he succumbs to the infection real quick) is one of the Soul Twisters that tries out a new experiment in hopes of gaining favor from Soul Master.
He decides to try to leech Soul off of Shadow without turning them into a husk, thing is, Shadow didn’t have any Soul to begin with, so the process breaks their shell and their Shade pops out
But due to the nature of the container being able to hold intangible things like Soul, and Shadow’s will to live being super strong, Shadow’s Shade stays trapped in the container
Vaati decides to keep them in there and simply monitor how they react to Soul, and even Infection exposure
It goes like this for a while before the City shuts down and chaos erupts, with the Soul Master instructing his minions to capture more bugs for more Soul, leaving the Sanctum pretty empty....and thats when Vio shows up
Vio breaks the container, and with no where else to go (unless you count the Abyss but Shadow did not want to rest) Shadow dives into Vio’s shadow as a last ditch effort, being able to cling to Vio’s soul reserves to keep them from truly fading
You know what happens next, they both live in Kingdom’s Edge for a while, and Shadow used miming through the shadows reflected on the walls to try to puppet out what had happened to them when asked by Vio.
Once they make it to the Mask Maker and get they’re new mask, they finally are able to experience the world again, this time with someone trusted by their side. Vio promises to try to learn sign to help teach them so that they can communicate now that they actually have hands
Due to the fact that they had been in Vio’s shadow for a good while, they’re naturally clingy to him, either by leaning against him, or holding his hand (with Vio being a bit flustered at the contact) and they’re very wary of the other Four Swords at the start, but soon warm up to them little by little
Now it’s canon that all Vessels are genderless, so Shadow in this AU goes by they/them, later on once they’ve been with Vio and the Gang long enough, they decide that they like He/Him pronouns too, so Shadow does go by They/He
Shadow has no weapon, but they do know Shade Soul and Desolate Dive from being experimented on in the Soul Sanctum so cool spell combos along with the Gang’s fighting style
And there you have it folks! If you have any questions or any suggestions please don’t be afraid to send me an ask! I love interacting with people who share my interests!

Hello! For HK ask meme: Cornifer, The Hunter, White Lady, Nightmare King, Godseeker
Hello, hello! Your art is neat!! :D Thanks for the ask!
Cornifer: Favorite area in Hallownest?
Funny enough, The Queen’s station. The place struck a cord with me, both because I didn’t expect such place there and stepping in it in silence that was then taken over by distant noises of what it was like when it was busy, as stations are... I think I just stood or walked around it for longer than necessary.
Then, City of Tears has so much to offer and maybe most lore oriented? Lots of tidbits~ I am always so curious about how the life was before the fall of the kingdom, the city (and the crossroads) really offer some idea~ I love mantis village too and Shaman sub areas~ (Am I a sucker for tribal stuff? PERHAPS)
The Hunter: Favorite/least favorite enemy you encounter? What is your favorite journal entry?
Least favorite are primal aspids, I don’t think I have to explain why XD Also those large, charging flukes, I forgot how they’re called :T OH AND FLYING PETRA MANTIS, with their mechanic breaking flying scythes fffff they made my garden exploring a living hell
Favorites hmm... I know Nosk is a boss but I kind of find his enemy design and mechanic as my favorite, got weak spots for mimics (even if they mess me up every time because I’m naive haha...).
Honestly, how Hunter describes Ooma and Uoma are funny to me, I can just imagine him being confused XDD I also like his opinions of rich dead bugs from the city
White Lady: Do you have any theories about the Higher Beings in Hallownest?
OH BOY DO I~!! *clears throat and sits down, taking out notes*
Metamorphosis plays a big part in their abilities and power and depending on how much they cycled in their seemingly (but not really) endless lifetime depends how much they change/molted with each new form. I like to think every time a new form comes along they get more powerful and closer to god beings BUT with that also MORE FRAGILE, decreasing their life span. So the molting/changing part is only a necessity, at least for bug like beings like the White Lady or Pale King (but also like to think Radiance went through similar very early and that Nightmare King keeps doing that but with a repeating cycle of his dance).
As for none bug beings like Unn, while they don’t have these cycles, they veeery slowly and gradually grow in power and get closer to god like beings. I guess I should also mention that, thanks to Pantheon, I believe even regular bugs/beings can become gods IF they manage to figure out how to get that powerful and climb the Higher Being ranks. If they can get as strong as some bosses in Hallownest alone (*glances at Silksong*) by means of spells, souls, nail art etc, why not have for any bug having a chance to become as powerful. It’s just... risky, deadly and takes a lot of time :’D being birthed as a higher being such as (what I believe) Hornet and the vessels are is probably easier *pats Ghost as Lord of Shades on the head*
Aside from that, I don’t think they’re immortal or anything. Powerful, through kin or experience, yes, but not immortal (RIP Radiance).
I think that’s all for now!
Tumblr media
Nightmare King Grimm: Which boss battle was the most intense for you? The most satisfying to defeat?
RADIANCE ;n;
RADIANCE >:}c
Godseeker: How far have you made it in Godhome?
....... *cricket noises, muffled cough*
U-uh... I checked out the place... hmm.... fought some awakened bosses... uh.... I failed the first binding.... mmhm. that’s it. I nopped out of there and said “that’s a second playthrough me problem~” HDSJHFDKSGHFJ
