“I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings

Asoiaf Readalong - Arya's Friend
I had forgotten just how hard Mycah's death hit Arya. It's not a one and done thing; she keeps dwelling on it. Her grief is only exacerbated when everyone calls him "the butcher's boy" or forgets about him entirely. She has no one to turn to with her grief, and it threatens to break her.

I'm up earlier than usual and with the BF sleeping, that means I get some quiet reading time!

I really have loved the #asoiafreadalong hosted by @books-and-cookies and I’m so glad I got was able to find all the books second hand to annotate.
GRRM puts so much deliberateness into this story; hardly anything is just filler, even if it’s tedious backstory and names. Names mentioned once seemingly in passing play roles later, everyone is connected somehow, and characters get things wrong (Robb calls Ser Beric Ser Deric, Sansa calls Sers Hobber and Horas Slobber and Horror). And the DREAMS! So much is hinted at in dreams, there are so many supernatural elements that don’t seem supernatural at first.
There’s a reason this is one of my favorite series and I’m so glad to be able to follow along and see other people’s thoughts.
Onward to Clash of Kings!

My copy of A Game of Thrones, found in the bargain section of Barnes & Noble for cheaper than the paperback costs. I was trying for a complete set, but this is the only volume in the series I’ve found.

A dark photo for an equally dark book series...
I’m joining in on the ASOIAF read along! I still have 13 days, so hopefully with reading before bed I’ll be able to make it. So many people have finished already! I’m still debating on notetaking/annotations, or if I should just go with my original plan of stickying every single death...

A Song of Ice and Fire logic
the ice zombies are killing us all if only we had known
*every brother of the Night’s Watch screams in frustration from the afterlife*
//
surely no dragons can come from a massive continent we know nothing about which was the original birth place of dragons  - every Westeros lord ever
//
surely the slaves we beat and torture every day and which outnumber us 10 to 1 wont dare rise against us eventually  - every Volantene slave master ever
//
surely building our entire civilisation on active volcanoes and actively mining into them wont end bad, cause we're the lords of fire - every Valyrian ever
//
i'm sure the ever increasing amount of maniacs and psychopaths sitting on the throne isn't a result of my ancestors inbreeding for centuries - every Targaryen ever
//
i m sure Walder Frey who is known to hold a grudge forever wont try to harm me after shitting on his honour - every Robb Stark ever

I wonder if this is GRRM’s way of throwing shade at the nipple Batsuit.

Asoiaf Readalong - Rob Stark
Rob is hardly even in the books but he is one of my favorite characters none the less, and I think I know why: He listens. I noticed while rereading A Game of Thrones when Bran is worried that he will call the banners after the fiasco with Eddard and Jaimie in the streets and reminds Rob that "Father always listens to Maester Luwin." And Rob replies "I listen to him; I listen to everyone." I realized then that it was true. Seriously, I can't think of any other leader in literature that listens to council half so well as he does. He has the humility as a fifteen year old high ranking noble to trust others more than himself, especially when it's all on the line. Think about that for a second. That isn't to say he won't risk himself when called to; he wouldn't ask anyone to do something he hasn't proven he is willing to do himself. He leads as he would want to be led: with humility, courage, and wisdom. And I love him for it. The scene later that chapter (GoT: 37-Bran) after the confrontation with the wildlings is worthy of its own spiel, should anyone wish to hear it.
