MWW Artwork of the Day (3/26/22) Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigerian/American, b. 1983) Dwell: Aso Ebi (2017) Acrylic, transfers, colored pencil, collage & commemorative fabric on paper, 243.8 x 315 cm. Hayward Gallery, London
In composing her works, Akunyili Crosby combines sources from different worlds, mixing family photographs from Nigeria with an interior of her own apartment. Each element is broken down into constituent parts (figures, furniture, background, surrounding spaces), transferred onto transparent films, and projected and retraced onto the final support. During this process she considers and finalizes crucial decisions about the details of the scene. She also makes deliberate and complex use of transfer prints, using a mineral-based solvent to transfer photocopied images from newspapers and product catalogues, magazines and books, onto the support. Akunyili Crosby layers these transfers, creating dense patterns that may move from a figure to parts of a piece of furniture, a background wall, a carpet, or an architectural element, creating an atmosphere of tension and instability.

The V&A’s Next Blockbuster Show Will Celebrate African Fashion – & It Wants Your Help
The Victoria & Albert Museum is globally renowned for its blockbuster fashion exhibitions, having taken a deep dive into subjects as varied as handbags, kimonos and underwear, and hosting retrospectives on the likes of Christian Dior, Frida Kahlo, Balenciaga and Mary Quant. Today it announces that its next major show will be a celebration of African fashion.
Opening June 2022, Africa Fashion will be “celebrating the irresistible creativity, ingenuity and unstoppable global impact of contemporary African fashions as dynamic and varied as the continent itself.” Curated by Dr Christine Checinska, curator of African diaspora fashion, over 250 objects sourced from the personal archives of contemporary African creatives will sit alongside the V&A’s in-house collection of textiles and photographs – many of which will be on display for the first time ever.
“Our guiding principle is the foregrounding of individual African voices and perspectives,” Checinska said in a statement from the museum. “The exhibition will present African fashions as a self-defining art form that reveals the richness and diversity of African histories and cultures. To showcase all fashions across such a vast region would be to attempt the impossible. Instead, Africa Fashion will celebrate the vitality and innovation of a selection of fashion creatives, exploring the work of the vanguard in the twentieth century and the creatives at the heart of this eclectic and cosmopolitan scene today. We hope this exhibition will spark a renegotiation of the geography of fashion and become a game-changer for the field.”
Focusing on the first generation of African designers to gain global attention – from Shade Thomas-Fahm and Chris Seydou to Kofi Ansah and Alphadi – the exhibition will “trace their rise and impact, their creative process and inspirations, brought to life by real stories from those who loved and wore their distinctive designs.” Much like the Mary Quant exhibition, the V&A is issuing a call-out for the general public to submit their garments and personal testimonies to bring the show to life. Items the museum is looking for include:
• Rare and early designs by Shade Thomas-Fahm, Chris Seydou, Kofi Ansah and Alphadi. • 1980s experimental garments in bògòlanfini by Chris Seydou. • Twentieth century kente, bògòlanfini, khanga and commemorative cloths from the independence and liberation years that connect to personal stories. • Family portraits and home movies from the independence and liberation years showing African and African diasporic fashion trends of the day. • Made-to-order garments, including aso ebi, co-created by local tailors, dressmakers and their clients, worn at festivals or to mark significant personal milestones, from 2010 onwards. • Copies of Drum Magazine from 1950-1970.
“Help us tell this visually compelling story of unbounded creativity, agency and self-fashioning,” Checinska says. “Check attics, trunks, family photo albums and home movies for the chance to feature in our exhibition.”
Though it’ll be some time until we’re able to visit galleries and museums safely, news of the thrilling Africa Fashion exhibition is giving us something to look forward to.
The call-out for Africa Fashion is launched today and will run until 1st May 2021. Anyone with objects that fit the description is asked to get in touch by email at [email protected], and to share their pictures and memories using the hashtag #AfricaFashion.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

Lagos Traditional Wedding Party Like Cynthia and Michael's
https://youtu.be/7sU1Mqf9eHs A complete Lagos traditional wedding party, when done in a day, comprises of the three stages namely, Engagement (Trad Wedding), White Wedding and reception. Some couples set a date for their engagement and another date for white white wedding. It is basically done according to your preference. Anyway, many couples prefer to do the two stages within a day because it is cost-effective. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); What are Saturdays for, in Lagos? Look all around you from the streets to the road, all kinds of colours come alive, indicating active social activities like Lagos traditional wedding parties and other events are drawing to people to themselves. They are days when we have our ‘owambes’ and everybody is wearing a uniform called the ‘aso ebi’ and are ready to hit the dance floor of all the wedding parties taking place at various event centres in lagos metropolis. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); A slice of all the busy numbers looking pretty in their native attire attending one event or another, making Saturday look like Monday rush hours, have made it a ‘mission possible’ to be present at Cynthia and Michael’s all colourful Lagos traditional wedding party.
It all started on a good note; a wedding photographer getting the hug of his life in the early hours of the wedding day because he came early enough, from the bride, who, didn’t spare any emotions on seeing him even before her makeup session started. You can bet it wasn’t my assistant that was hugged. I would question him for insubordination if he got what rightfully belonged to his boss. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); The groom needing almost no attention from the makeup artist and photographers, man is just good to go. In fact, Michael was already doing the engagement rites while Cynthia was getting ready with make up and other stuff. We know how preparing the bride for her wedding eats into the official time of the event. It is an opportunity for any good wedding photographer out there to take some concept shots of the bride, and the groom, if time permits. As expected, I became a co-culprit in using up some of that time of the event doing some really good portrait shooting. For a Lagos wedding photographer like me, conceptually photographing the bride’s beauty accessories, ‘aso ebi’ and her makeup session, is the early morning ritual before the commencement of their Lagos traditional wedding party.
You expect an average Lagos traditional wedding party to be colourful, elegant, cultural and traditional, yes, Cynthia and Michael’s traditional wedding won’t disappoint you. Open your eyes to a pretty gallery of what a beautifully Lagos tradition wedding looks like. Starting from beautiful traditional wedding accessories of course. Traditional Wedding Accessories You wonder why the Nigerian bride look beautifully unique on her wedding day. You will escape your bewilderment if you can come to the terms with the fact that simply embracing one's own traditions and culture and looking the part, sets you apart from everyone else. These are some of the accessories that set the Nigerian brides apart from other brides in the world.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
Groomsmen With The Gele Of Life What would you do at your wedding reception party without your fun-loving friends to grace the occasion. Michael's friends, the groomsmen, came gallantly to have their gele tied and looking everything like how Nigerian ladies appear at weddings looking like stylish ornaments. These guys are definitely giving all Nigerian ladies a run for their money in the looks department. By the way, What is the life of a wedding party/reception without the fun part.

DOWNLOAD: The Wedding Party (2016) – Nollywood Movie
The Wedding party follows the shenanigans that go on during the planning of a wedding in Nigeria. Dunni, a 24 year old art gallery owner and only daughter of her parents, Engineer Bamidele and Mrs Tinuade Coker, is about to marry the love of her life, IT entrepreneur Dozie, the handsome son of Chief Felix and Lady Obianuju Onwuka. The couple took a vow of chastity and are looking forward to a ground -breaking first night together as a married couple. Between matchmaking attempts on the bridal train, a wedding planner on a mission to succeed, the unruly behaviour of some ‘village’ guests much to Tinuade’s horror, Dunni’s uncertainty about her new husband’s faithfulness during the time of their courtship, amidst colourful aso-ebi, eclectic music, small chops, and souvenir drama, we begin to wonder whether Dunni and Dozie will get through their wedding reception unscathed. Nigerians love a good party, no one can deny that. Why else do you think movies that show lavish parties like The Wedding Party and Chief Daddy, often leap to the top of the box office? Well, outside the Mo Abudu touch, there’s the fact that these events portrayed on the big screen, mirror the over the top nature of 80 percent of Nigeria’s parties.
A huge part of our party scene is the Aso Ebi culture. From birthdays and funerals to weddings and naming ceremonies, it’s hard to attend a party with jollof rice, that doesn’t also have a myriad of colors. The booming market of Owambes and Aso Ebis has successfully employed a large number of Nigerians, from the tailors who have a proclivity for disappointing you and rushing your outfit, to the Aso Oke weavers who seem to up their prices monthly. In the end, we push through these constant disappointments and account drainers, because what doesn’t kill us, gets us a plastic souvenir at the next party.
One celebrity who seems to have her Owambe style on lockdown is Skinny Girl In Transit’s Sharon Ooja. The actress who broke out from the NdaniTV show has become a staple at celebrity weddings and events. With the body of a model, and a face perfect for “bridal make-up”, it comes as no surprise that Sharon always gets 10s across the board whenever she serves us an owambe look.
The key to looking good, is knowing your body and what works for you best, as that helps boost your confidence when you step out. Sharon knows her body and what style flatters her the most. This is why we trust Sharon to help get us ready for this weekend’s long list of events, and church service too.

Get Ready For This Weekend’s Owambe With SGIT’s Sharon Ooja. Nigerians love a good party, no one can deny that. Why else do you think movies that show lavish parties like The Wedding Party and Chief Daddy, often leap to the top of the box office?

Meet Daniella Down: All You Should Know About The English Actress In Wedding Party Movie
Deardre flew all the way from England to watch her friend Dunni walk down the aisle and, possibly, meet her own African prince. No movie has ever achieved the success achieved by The Wedding Party as far as casting is concerned. Let’s talk about Deardre Winston (Daniella Down), she is one of the bridesmaid.
For the first time in Nollywood movies, the white actor actually could act! Obviously, The Crew of Wedding Party did not just go to China Town to find ‘a white person’ that ends up just moping around in the movie, frustrating the efforts of others. The way Deardre fought for the attention of Nonso Dozie’s brother is quite hilarious but very real! Daniella began her career in contemporary and physical theatre in the UK, having attained a first class degree with honours in Performing Arts. She toured self-devised pieces such as ‘Havisham’ with her co-founded theatre company En-root and performed in ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Woyzeck’, and ‘OldBoy’ with FullTilt.
Daniella returned to her hometown Hong Kong to work in film, most notably ‘Drink Tea Ghost Man’ and Chinese TV series ‘Spring in The City’, as a voice over artist dubbing Chinese and Japanese cartoons and film into English and voicing commercials, and as a writer. Work and a passion for travel took her around the world, to London and then to Amsterdam where she has continued in film and voice work. She is known for her role as the flighty American Ellie in ‘The Conversations’ (Haider Zafar & Marcus Flemmings, 2016), which has one best film in 3 international film festivals and as Sam in the Nigerian-British quirky comedy ‘Mum, Dad Meet Sam’ (Tony Sebastian Ukpo, 2014). It was during this film she was introduced to the Nollywood when the film did a cinema run.
Last two year saw the success of The Wedding Party (Kemi Adetiba, 2016) breaking Nigerian box office records, in which she played Deirdre Winston. She is returning to The Wedding Party for the sequel, Destination Dubai as the principle female. The sequel is scheduled for a December 2017 release. Daniella’s projects are varied and reflect her passion for traveling. ‘The Shell Collector’ (directed by Kevin Tadge) an American-Hong Kong film, will release later in 2017. Other creative projects include an underwater music video (Coldplay Ghost Stories Live Tour), experimental short films such as ‘The other Violence’ (directed by Michael Sewando), playing Elizabeth Bennett in a Hong Kong theatrical reworking of Pride & Prejudice, and many creative writing projects. Trivia (2) Daniella grew up in Hong Kong, after moving there in 1997. She is one of 5 siblings. Daniella specializes in physical and experimental theatre, and she has been involved in numerous original and classic plays and physical adaptations, including ‘Old Boy’- a physical interpretation of Chan-wook Park’s film. She is also a trained voice over artist.
