As a Wonder Woman fan, what's your exact opinion of Yara Flor? I see she's been received quite negatively in some parts of the internet (namely South American portions).
This ask is making me once again think about how every single piece of Yara Flor concept art is god-tier and the concept of introducing "an Amazon from the Amazon" was absolutely galaxy-brained and then DC just RUINED it by making her an adult from Idaho and doing absolutely nothing with her supposedly indigenous Brazilian mythological roots.
I'm actually super angry about how Yara was handled. Yara was the first new major Wonderfam character in 20+ years, had a ton of hype and reader buy-in, and had a fantastic initial concept; she was a desperately needed new legacy character and DC just fumbled it in every way possible. Yara could have been a vital addition to the lore, especially since the core Wonderfam is so heavily white and we've needed a new Wonder Girl for ages. But instead of creating that added dimension, we got......that.
I just...there was SO MUCH MOMENTUM AND EXCITEMENT for her, and then she absolutely bombed because no one at DC sat down and planned out who she was or what her story was going to be, then gave her introduction solo to a woman whose lack of research and care is offensively tacky at best and outright racist at worst. Joelle Jones' awful writing for Yara's initial solo combined with the bait-and-switch of introducing her not as an indigenous teenage girl from Brazil (as advertised) but as an adult woman from Idaho completely torpedoed Yara's hype and sustainability as a character.
Jones failed to define who Yara is, what she cares about, and why she matters to the rest of the Wonderfam despite having 12 issues and an event comic to do so. She also didn't do the research and DC refused to put someone on the book who would or had lived experience, and it shows. Yara's backstory was bungled horrendously, her lore is offensive, convoluted, and contradictory to the already established Amazonian lore, and she has no real, lasting connection to either the Themyscirans or the tribe she supposedly hails from. All of which were huge mistakes.
The Esquecidas (the Amazonian splinter tribe Yara is theoretically from) have successfully been integrated into the larger Amazonian mythos (thankfully), but Yara herself is just kinda there because she's effectively a dead character. There's nowhere for her to go since her introduction was fumbled so badly. I'm sure there's a lot of scrapped plans sitting around at DC while someone tries to figure out how to make her into a workable character, but at the moment she's basically unsalvagable as-is and needs a bottom-up revamp.
tl;dr most people, including me, like the concept of Yara. We like the execution a lot less, for a variety of reasons (mostly racism and cultural ignorance issues, but also narrative incoherence and a lot of missed opportunities). She's technically fixable, but she's fundamentally not sustainable as she's been built thus far.
anyway, forever thinking about the sheer wasted potential of not introducing Mainverse!Yara as a young teenager so she could actually reasonably be titled "Wonder Girl," be in Jon and Damian's age group to give her a natural group of friends, and have a natural narrative path forward for her stories
#it's been 4 years and I still can't believe DC has Rafael Albuquerque on speed dial and didn't put him on Yara's solo#asks#dc comics#yara flor#wonder girl#wonder woman#wonderfam#dc fanwank#joelle jones#this is a joelle jones hate blog

ABBOTTS' ANGELS - THE CREW OF 'THE SERAPHIM'
The first all-female flight crew to grace Thorpe Abbotts airfield, the crew of The Seraphim - affectionately nicknamed 'Abbotts' Angels' - come as a unit. Attached at the hip, even in spite of their differences, there is no doubt that every single one of them would put their own life on the line for their team if need be. And, as the war takes its toll, their camaraderie becomes the only thing keeping their heads above water as impossible circumstances threaten to rip them apart forever.
I'm going to be writing one-shots and taking prompts for these girls, so be on the lookout!! (tagging everything with #abbotts angels)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1a3edabbbc59080852513b3ff98f5bd1/b76eb9351f726ce4-d0/s540x810/40d70341a5f980a50a089edd0a7d6d6c5277c1bb.jpg)
-> KATHLEEN 'KIT' MCKENZIE [PILOT]
A native Californian, Kit's family never recovered from the ravages of the Great Depression, and as a result, she's been going at it alone since the age of seventeen. Working countless dead-end jobs just to keep herself alive, nothing in Kit's life has ever come without her having to fight for it. Desperation leads her straight to the B-17, where her newly discovered knack for flying - and a borderline reckless willingness to do whatever command throws at her - earn her a position as Lieutenant. With a knack for starting fights she can't win, Kit has never been daunted by impossible odds, and will make damn sure no one ever looks down on her, or her crew.
-> DOROTHY 'THEA' GRAVES [CO-PILOT]
Born to middle-class parents, Thea has seemingly been handed everything she could ever want - a comfortable New York apartment, a doting high-school sweetheart turned fiancé, and a teaching position at the local elementary school. However, nothing in her life has ever been able to satisfy Thea's fierce sense of justice. So, when the opportunity arises, she jumps at the chance to fight the spread of Nazi powers, finally taking things into her own hands. Despite their somewhat tense relationship, Thea and Kit are an unstoppable force from the moment they enter the cockpit, forging a wartime bond that will see them through to the end.
-> YARA KATZ [BOMBADIER]
A Jewish legal secretary from New Jersey, Yara has a more personal stake in the war than most. After her father's family is wiped out during the Nazi invasion of Greece, she is swift to enlist herself wherever she can do the most damage, using her keen intelligence and quick thinking to her advantage. Unyeildingly serious and generally void of humour, Yara quickly becomes an integral part of the crew, her dependable nature making her a trusted figure in any crisis. Although she may appear distant from the others, she is as much a part of the Angels as anyone, and will stand up for her crew no matter the cost.
-> SYLVIE GAO [NAVIGATOR]
Raised in England until the age of eleven, Sylvie and her mother travelled to America following the death of her father, where her half-Chinese heritage made it difficult for her to fit in. The 'baby' of the crew, Sylvie was fresh out of high school when she enlisted, putting her keen sense of direction and meticulous attention to detail to use as a navigator. Upon joining the crew of The Seraphim, she finds herself a new group of protectors - although the extent to which she truly needs protection remains to be seen. However, Sylvie's sweet facade is put to the test when survivor's guilt (and a budding relationship with the mechanic Ken Lemmons) begins to pull her in every direction, forcing her to question who she is away from her squad.
-> NORA RAFFERTY [ENGINEER]
Born into generational wealth, no one has ever expected Nora to become anything more than a socialite, living off of her parents' money until the day she dies. As such, it comes as a shock when she develops a passion for mechanical engineering, forging her own path as she pursues her degree, and enlisting with the Air Force upon graduation. Never quite able to escape people's assumptions, Nora is stuck fighting to prove herself just as capable and dedicated as those around her. And, when faced with the direst of circumstances, she seizes the opportunity to step out of the shadow of her upbringing and fight to bring her crew home.
-> MAISIE 'WILCO' FLYNN [RADIO OPERATOR]
Growing up in small-town North Dakota, with no family but her father, Maisie had never been much of a social butterfly. Despite having no real interest in radios, her father's obsession has taught her everything she needs to know, making her as proficient in the machines as the most practised of experts. A natural people-pleaser with an anxious nature, she finds herself affectionately dubbed 'Wilco', derived from the radio shorthand for 'will comply', as she never seems to have a bad word to say about command, no matter how insane or dangerous their missions become. However, when disaster forces Maisie to face the world's harsh realities, she will have to summon all the courage she has to make it home alive.
-> MARTHE 'MARTY' JARLSSON [BALL-TURRET GUNNER]
Almost six feet tall, with a passion for competitive rowing, Marty is used to being seen as intimidating and unapproachable by her male colleagues, so the opportunity to join the first female bomber crew at Thorpe Abbotts never strikes her as daunting, but rather a chance to ditch her day job. When the car factory she's spent the last several years toiling away at converts to plane manufacturing in support of the war effort, Marty realises she can do more good elsewhere, jumping headfirst into her training. With a jolly personality and a penchant for dirty jokes, she brings a sense of life to The Seraphim - but she's not afraid to use people's assumptions to her advantage when the time comes to protect her friends.
-> SADIE BAUER [WAIST GUNNER]
The middle child stuck between two brothers, Sadie is beginning to realise she's never done much of anything with her life aside from playing her guitar in shitty, run-down bars. Through her day job at a university cafeteria, she unexpectedly finds a best friend (and possibly more) in Ivy Heron, a girl with which she couldn't possibly have less in common. When war comes calling, Sadie is struck with a desire to finally make her mark on the world - and when she enlists, Ivy comes too. Scared that her own ambition was the decisive factor in her best friend dropping out of college, Sadie swears to protect Ivy from anything the war can throw at them - a promise that will take them further than they could have ever imagined.
-> IVY 'ANGEL' HERON [WAIST GUNNER]
Born in Salt Lake City to Mormon parents, Ivy grew up as the oldest of five siblings, used to always being told exactly how her life was going to go. But after abandoning the church and running away to live with her aunt at the age of fifteen, Ivy is left with seemingly endless opportunities, travelling to university to study literature and dive head-first into the books she had never been allowed to read as a child. Nicknamed 'Angel' for her baby-faced appearance, she provides the moniker for the flight crew and The Seraphim itself, taking comfort in the community she has forged for herself among the women. Despite her sugary demeanour, Ivy is far from a damsel in distress, and the war will prove the ultimate test of her resolve when she is forced to fight the odds and find a way to safety for herself and those she loves.
-> DAWN DAVIS [TAIL GUNNER]
A natural-born artist, Dawn's love of flying has always been about freedom - about rising above her responsibilities and taking the world at its simplest. War promises to change this. Competitive and impulsive, Dawn had originally only enlisted in an attempt to one-up her sister - a Red Cross volunteer. Even to the most reckless members of the team, she stands out as a rash decision-maker, seemingly unconcerned with anything as material as danger or permanent as death. But beneath her careless exterior, Dawn is simply afraid of what the war will do to her if she lets herself feel the peril of every mission, and denial gives her a way to stay level-headed and alert in a crisis, able to keep her crewmates alive in even the direst of conditions.

If you had the power to write a storyline for one DC hero and one DC villian, who would it be and why? - 🌻
Imma be excluding Jason for this one bc I decided he's an antihero and I have way too much to say about my gum drop.
Hero definitely Yara Flor, I feel like having someone who's brazilian write her would solve a lot of issues I have with her character and how brazilian folklore is portrayed, I also know a bunch of indigenous creators from my community and know they would be down for it.
Villain Punchline, there's so much to do with her character and I feel like having her being a Red Hood antagonist/villain would be a great way to not drown her in-between Batman's rogue gallery, the idea of someone so obsessed with Joker having his "biggest victim" as her opponent is delicious.
thank you for the ask 🌻 !!

Yara😢 what's next Ama? Are we not able to have a maternal figure in our life? Curse?!
I'm thinking about the other female characters who might offer maternal wisdom and the only one I can think of is the healer who helps you after the fainting spell/Atses' Heart incident 👀😅 So I suppose not. But I mean, if you're fine with politically motivated and possibly stab-you-in-the-back maternal figures, there's always Sovereign Amera and Princess Lamahu 😆

i've read that they have dropped (correct me pls) her series but she'll have her roles in other comic plots. is there any sign that she will be back? was the decision based on sales?
yara flor is my most favourite wonder women because joelle jones adds charm to any female heroe she draws and her character and background are interesting. hope she gets her series back
Hey! So, about Yara... she first appeared in Future State, but it was pretty clear from the get go that DC was really invested in the character, she had a solo series that ran for 7 issues from 2021 to 2022, then she was part of the Trial of the Amazons, a Wonder Woman focused event... then her solo series was cancelled and her appearances dwindled getting more and more scarce, it was all pretty quick, she burned bright and fast, going from Hot New Character to background cameo in two years. She was even supposed to have her own CW show, but that was also dropped hard (and I don't think that would really help her after all, I mean... what did the Naomi CW show do for her? - most people don't even know about that show / character).
As for the sales, I have no idea, I don't pay attention to the sales of comic books and I usually stay away from the forums that debate such matters as in my experiences they tend to be less focused on the creative side of comics and that's my main interest in this medium. That being said, I can only speculate on how DC's heavy investment in Yara failed in the long run, instead of taking a more subtle approach, hinting at her arrival and generating organic interest in the character, they threw her in the spotlight out of nowhere, why should the reader care for this new character? Particularly when other beloved Wonder Girls are forgotten? Yara deserved a better introduction into this universe, instead she was pushed so hard that it might have created a backlash from the readers who rejected the hype without really paying attention to her potential... It's a shame because Yara is an interesting character and offers a distinct perspective in the Wonder Woman mythos. Joelle Jones did a nice job in developing her, her Wonder Girl series is not perfect but it is still a pretty fun and entertaining read
Nowadays Tom King remembers Yara and will occasionally use her in his current Wonder Woman run, I won't go into the merit of whether his portrayal of her is good or bad, the thing is... She's still around, so we can dream of a new Yara series one day... Maybe even a Wonder Girls book with Yara, Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark having adventures? I'd like that

Hi, Here I am to ask
6 and 12 for the sillies (Ved and clement because they are the only ones I know)
SO, I also leave 5 and 11 for any skykid that you really feel like talking about and introducing to curious people like me
6. How does your skykid feel about the Elders?
Ved is a Herald, a people that were Megabird's first attempt at cleansing the corruption on the world and restoring the balance between Light and Darkness. In general Heralds didn't hate the Elders and Ancestors, but they didn't view the Elders positively and thought of them as rather foolish and/or selfish. The one who raised Ved had a kinder outlook on them, so Ved sees them as authority who made big mistakes and are paying the price for it. Not the most positive, but not entirely negative either. They don't really interact with any of the Elders aside from Tsadi on occasion and Lamed (since they lived and work in Vault). They were the ones who let Ved into the Vault where they stayed for thousands of years. Ved respects Lamed for looking after them and because they're their boss. Ved doesn't really go into the Prairie, Forest, and Valley Temples and has no desire to meet with their Elders. Out of all the Elders, Daleth is the one they feel most sorry for.
Clement has a light core but he is not a Child of Light. He is a Witch, created by the God of Earth. Witches are a neutral third party between Light and Darkness. He doesn't really have much of an opinion on the Elders, and respects them in the way a diplomat would respect the leaders of a different nation.
12. Skykid’s feelings on dark creatures?
Ved has seen a variety of Dark Creatures that live in their native Darklands when they were young, and thinks they are rather interesting and beautiful animals. The "Dark Dragons/Krill" in this story are deeply changed Light Creatures. Ved feels pity towards them but understands that they are dangerous and will not hesitate to harm one if needed.
Clement was born after the division of the lands and has only seen smaller more harmless Dark Creatures that stayed in the Lightlands or are brought into the Witches Forest. He secretly thinks the small ones are kind of cute. When it comes to eating them, he gets overly vigilant about making sure they're safe for consumption.
5. How does your skykid feel towards the ancestors? Do they have a favorite? A least favorite?
Mei is a historian and an archivist and thinks the Ancestors are very interesting. Despite being spirits, many of the Ancestors live and work alongside Skyborn. To her they're almost like literal living memories, but regular people at the same time? A lot of the Ancestors remaining memories and stories have already been recorded as much as possible by the time she started working at the Vault, but there are always some small overlooked discoveries every few years. Mei's focus is on the era of the Heralds and always tries to consult the Ancestors on her research as the Heralds are all gone (Ved's identity as one is a secret). Her favorite is Wise Grandparent, who always rambles but looks out for the archivists
11. Skykid’s feelings on light creatures?
Yara loves animals, especially Light Creatures. She first tried applying to jobs that involved them: manta trainer, messenger (works with birds), etc, but it ended up that they would always play too much for a work setting so in the end she became a Guide assigned to Prairie instead
Send asks!

How about... random facts about ace and yara ♥
aksjdasdkjs Portada my beloveds <3 thank youuuu honestly I could talk about them endlessly
Yara will never, EVER admit this, but she found Ace attractive from the beginning. In an objective sense, or so she would insist. She did legitimately find him irritating as well, but he's a good-looking guy-- she can't really deny that the thought crossed her mind when she first saw his picture in the newspaper Whitebeard showed her about the young upstart pirate who turned down the Seven Warlords.
The Spade Pirates took bets all throughout the development of Ace and Yara's relationship. When they would officially get together, when they would share their first kiss, when they would have their first time together, when Ace would propose, when their first kid would be born... (Ace definitely knows about their little betting pool, Yara does not)
Sometimes Ace does stuff wrong on purpose so Yara will correct him. He gets attention and she gets to feel smart, so it's a win-win.
Yara uses Ace as her personal space heater when she gets cold. She doesn't tell him that's what she's doing, but he definitely notices she becomes uncharacteristically clingy whenever they're travelling through a winter island area. Ace doesn't mind. He gets even more cuddles, so he's actually thrilled XD
I saw a post once about how Ace tends to get along really well with other characters who have daddy issues, even if neither of them are aware of that fact. And when it comes to Yara... let's just say the daddy issues vibes she gave off were so powerful that he instantly developed the strongest case of sexual/romantic attraction he had ever felt LMAO
Seriously I don't know how Yara fought off developing a crush on him for so long LOL this girl has a will of steel (but even she couldn't resist his charm in the end). She knew what he was doing to her and she hated it.
Ace refers to the day that Yara told him she loved him (which led to them sharing their first kiss) as "the best day of [his] life".
Both of them had kissed people prior to each other, but neither had been in love before. Neither of them had ever expected to fall in love, either-- or, perhaps more accurately, that anyone could ever fall in love with them.
Sometimes their method of resolving disputes (e.g. what to have for dinner) is for both of them to call Kotatsu over and whoever Kotatsu chooses wins the dispute. Kotatsu hates being put in this predicament, though, and sometimes he runs away rather than having to choose between them.
Ace carries a copy of Yara's bounty poster around with him, like he does with Luffy's. His brother and his lover are two topics he can-- and will-- talk endlessly about.

D6/Existential Crisis with Della while she's stranded on the moon?
Went a bit too far with this one haha
Emotions and palettes are here
ID in alt and under cut
[ID
A colored full-body digital doodle of Della Duck from Ducktales 2017, done in a limited palette of shades of blue.
She is wearing her flight helmet, goggles, a flight jacket, scarf and shorts.
Her hair is long, and part of her jacket and shorts had been torn, leaving her right arm bare, save for bandages around her forearm and a fingerless glove on her right hand. Part of her robotic leg is missing.
She sits on the surface of the moon, facing the viewer, behind her are rocks, black space with stars and the Earth. She rests her hands on the floor, hunched over slightly. She looks very upset, tears are flowing from her eyes.

Made a post about my 3 things I want to see with every Wonder Woman adaptation, despite needing to do some catching up myself. Related, do you have a link to a Wonder Woman reading list?
https://at.tumblr.com/paigeoforacle/1-keep-fights-to-a-minimum/k7nbubhe1qws
Nice list!
As for my Wonder Woman recs list....technically, yes. I made a Wonder Woman starter recs list way back in 2017 right after the movie came out. However, it's outdated, I've changed my opinion on some of the things I said there as I've read more Wonder Woman comics, and it also fails to include several good comics. So here's my current Wonder Woman starter recs list:
Starter comics: These are great comics to read if you're new to Wonder Woman comics or only have a passing familiarity with her:
Wonder Woman: Year One, by Greg Rucka
Wonder Woman (1987) #1-62, by George Perez
Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia, by Greg Rucka
JLA: League of One, by Christopher Moeller
The Legend of Wonder Woman, by Ray Dillion and Renee De Liz
Wonder Woman: Historia, by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Wonder Woman (1987) #170, by Phil Jimenez (the Diana-Lois 'Day in the Life' issue)
"Generations" from Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman, by Michael Jelenic (Issue #12 digitally, Issue #7 print)
Wonder Woman: Our Worlds At War, by Phil Jimenez (warning: this oneshot ties into the "Our Worlds at War" event, so the frame story will probably be confusing, but the majority of the story is a solid retelling of the collective Amazonian history up to that point)
Second-level comics: read these once you have a baseline familarity with Diana and her supporting cast:
Wonder Woman by Phil Jimenez, including Paradise Lost/Paradise Found (which I don't think are in the current Jimenez omnibus)
Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka (his first run on the title), with a particular call-out for the Medusa arc
Wonder Woman: The Circle and Ends of the Earth, by Gail Simone
Wonder Woman Rebirth (2016), by Greg Rucka (Rucka's second run; everything except Year One fits here)
Wonder Woman: The Twelve Labors (WW 1942 #212-222), by Len Wein and assorted other writers
Wonder Woman/Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour, by James Tynion IV
Wonder Woman: Lords and Liars by Mariko Tamaki
All of the comics on both lists are great; I have no hesitation recommending any of them. However, I will give a blanket warning for sexual assault in the Amazons' backstory, particularly during the seminal Perez run (which is very dated in how it handles the topic, unfortunately), and put a general note that while I can't think of anything outright offensive, various social issues are not always handled with grace (especially in the older runs).
Comics featuring the Wonderfam supporting cast:
Tales of the Titans (2023) #3, by Steve Orlando* (for Donna)
New Teen Titans: Who is Donna Troy?, by Marv Wolfman*
Titans (1999), by Devin Grayson (for Donna)*
The Return of Donna Troy, by Phil Jimenez (collected in The Death and Return of Donna Troy)*
Titans (2023), by Tom Taylor (for Donna)
Wonder Woman: Lifelines (WW 1987 #105-108) and WW #109-113, by John Byrne (Cassie Sandsmark's introduction)
Young Justice (1998), by Peter David (for Cassie)*
Nubia and the Amazons, by Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala*
Nubia: Queen of the Amazons, by Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala*
Wonder Woman: The Contest (WW 1987 #0 and #90-100), by William Messner-Loebs (for Artemis of Bana-Mighdall)
Artemis: Requiem, by William Messner-Loebs (Note: this is not actually recommended reading. It's utterly cursed and I wouldn't put it on here if it wasn't absolutely necessary to understand how Artemis isn't dead after "The Contest." Read everything else on this list before you read this mini)
Wonder Woman: Gods of Gotham (WW 1987 #164-167), by Phil Jimenez*
Red Hood and the Outlaws Rebirth (2016) #1-24, by Scott Lobdell (for post-Flashpoint!Artemis, who's basically a different character)
Future State: Wonder Woman, by Joelle Jones (Yara Flor)
Wonder Girl (2021), by Joelle Jones (for Yara) (Note: this run is "just okay" and I'm reccing it with several reservations. However, it's also Yara's most prominent comic to date)
I've starred the ones on this list that I actually recommend as "good comics to read" and not just "decent starter comics for the character." Warning for depictions of sexual assault, bad art if you're looking at a pre-2000s comic, and being forced to engage with Scott Lobdell and William Messner-Loebs' writing.
I also recommend DC Bombshells by Marguerite Bennett; it's an Elseworlds comic set in WWII that co-stars Diana and it's delightful. There's certainly others that are solid reading, but I think this is a solid starter list if you want to understand Wonder Woman and how she should be written.

saw that you were talking about wanting to say more about your pcs, so I figured an ask might be appropriate... can you tell me about yara? it might just have been because I haven't dug all that deep, but I'd love to know how she is personality wise, what sort of jobs and skills she likes/excels at... etcetera

@bloodspick
aaaaaa ty for your interest in my girl..!!
she works in the temple by day and at darryl's by night! and she sees no conflict of interest here :)
personality-wise she's kind of a weirdgirl, but she tries to play it off as being aloof and cool. and she's known for being promiscuous, a delinquent, for drinking and partying... so her status as a nun + her stellar reputation at the temple might take one by surprise!
even more surprising, probably, is the fact that she joined the temple on her own, without any input from sydney. why? who's to say :)
as for her interests, she has a genuine love for theology. she likes history and literature. she also likes drinking and dancing and getting way too intimate with her friends (though she thinks nothing of it. she has chronically poor boundaries).
she's also extraordinarily catholic despite being quite bad at it. sad little gaygirl full of so much catholic guilt... that's not gonna stop her from sinning though ofc! <3
#sorry this took so long. i wanted to draw something better to go with but my wrist isnt cooperating ; w ;#thank u for the ask it made me giggle and yippee#btw i love ur pc also she looks so neat... need to look into elsie more....#it's so hard to try to make a primer/overview of her character because there's so much i want to ramble abt LMAO#yara the hypocrite#dolgl#xiba.art#xiba.ask
