#ask me about reggie and lydia
Note
astra!! do you have any hcs for dad regulus when his daughter is older?? you’ve shared lots about reggie and baby, but i’m curious now about reggie and toddler/preteen/teenager
RHEJAJSJDJSKD YES
reggie and toddler — they’re both horribly clingy to one another. she latches onto him, and when james suggests daycare, she and regulus start to cry (james cries too when they drop her off for the first time). he makes her one of those growth chart things where she stands against the wall and he marks her progress with a pen, always saying, “at this rate, you’ll tower over me someday!” to which james responds, “it’s not hard to tower over you, baby.” regulus helps keep her soft toddler curls all nice and fluffy, absolutely pampering her with a morning curl routine they do together. he buys her so many cute little outfits and has her do fashion shows all the time (there are polaroids everywhere immortalizing this), and she always asks him to sing to her and read her stories <333
reggie and preteen — he’s constantly getting worked up about how much she’s growing. james is too, but sometimes he’ll walk in on regulus sobbing over his old ultrasound pictures and be like😀. god once she hits ten it’s over for him. she’s like “papa you’re embarrassing me!!” but he just squeezes her tighter until she’s gasping for air and he’s gotta let her go so she doesn’t suffocate. of course, they start to get into little spats, but they always end up laughing at the end because one of them will say something ridiculously sarcastic. he and james both try to be “hip” with the new kid slang, and oh my god it mortifies their daughter😭she’s just trying to get through her primary school choir concert and they’re like “YEAH LITTLE STAR YOURE BITCHIN’!!”
reggie and teen — constant bickering, but in an endearing way. they can get into explosive arguments, but it’s just because he’s really not ready to let her go yet, and it’s hitting him so fast that he has no idea how to respond. when she has a bad day, she still asks him to sing to her, but now they sing together and read some pretentious novel or other. he takes her to see all the hit movies (he waits on heathers, but once she’s old enough, they both become obsessed), and she turns into a total winona ryder freak because of it. she’s lydia deetz every halloween for like five years. when edward scissorhands comes out, regulus wants to bash his head into the wall from how many times his daughter plays ice dance on the piano. she definitely goes through a grunge phase, but jegulus are all for it; regulus helps her with her makeup, and they buy her tickets to all the concerts she wants to go to — though regulus draws the line when she asks him to learn “lithium” by nirvana on the piano💀when she moves out, he’s a fucking wreck, but she never goes far, and they have weekly dinners forever and ever and ever. also she absolutely teases him when he starts going grey (salt-and-pepper regulus🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤), so he gets revenge by temporarily charming her hair grey one day.

Malachai and Cordelia: 25. What moves do they know work on the other? 26. What are their favorite parts about physical affection/sex? 28. Write a ~300 fantasy one of them has about the other. 29. What are each of their signature foreplay moves? 30. Write a short exchange of dirty talk between them.
Welp, I guess it’s time for me to start developing their sex life.  Here goes nothing…
25. What moves do they know work on the other?
Malachai’s pretty much always ready to go.  All it takes is a look from Cordelia, and he’s ready to yank her into the back room of the bar.  Even more so if she does something badass like stand up to some douche-y guy.
Cordelia’s a little harder to get going.  She’s always been somewhat reserved when it comes to sex since she takes a really long time to trust someone.  She’s much more likely to melt in his hands after soft kisses and sweet words.
26. What are their favorite parts about physical affection/sex?
In addition to just really liking sex, Malachai likes the fact that it lets him get out of his head for a while.  When he’s in bed with Cordelia, she’s all he has to think about.  He doesn’t have to worry or be stressed, he can just be with her.
Cordelia’s kind of simillar.  She likes that she can let down her guard, that for at least a little while, she knows Malachai’s going to take care of her.  It’s the one time of day when she doesn’t have to be an independent bad ass, and she can just be Cordelia.
28. Write a ~300 fantasy one of them has about the other.
I think I’ll save this one for later since I don’t have any good ideas.
29. What are each of their signature foreplay moves?
Malachai: This guy is huge on making out.  Kissing, biting, a little grinding, all before any clothes come off.  He loves littering her body with hickeys, kissing every inch of skin as he takes her clothes off.  By the time they’re naked, he wants them both to be ready to go.
Cordelia: She knows how much he craves her reaction, and she’s happy to give it. All she needs to do is tell him how good it feels, how much she wants him, and he’ll be ready.  When it comes to foreplay, she’s a master of getting him going with nothing but her voice.
30. Write a short exchange of dirty talk between them.
This may or may not be a super rough draft of a semi-important scene from some part of the fic.  Sorry it sucks.
“Fuck,” he moaned, his lips trailing down her neck. “I thought you said this wasn’t going to happen.”
“And I thought you said you were done with drugs,” she panted, her chest flushing.
“Point taken.”
“Good, now I really fucking need you to take your pants off.”
“Are you sure, Cor?  I know–”
“Malachai, it’s been four fucking years.  Just shut up and take your pants off.”

Prince Protection Program AU!
Tumblr media
"We didn't get your name,"
"It's Julie," she huffs, annoyed.
"Oh okay. Well I'm Lucas- er, Luke now I guess. And this is-"
"Reginald of Solaria," the dark-haired one waves, "But now Reggie of Montana. Hey!"
"And-"
"Alexander," the blonde one introduces himself, "Used to be Prince of the Grybrian Isles. Just- Just Alex right now. How’s it... going?"
“Ba-da?” Luke ends in a flourish of his hands.
Her shoulders slump, but her flared temper remains.
"Okay," she growls out before stomping off in the direction of her house.
She finds her dad at his office (why he didn't meet her at the door to tell her is beyond her).
"Oh mija, good you're here. I want to get your opinions on these photos I took-"
"Dad!" she cuts in, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Her dad winces, setting down the photos, now appearing sheepish, "Maybe I was sort of waiting until dinner time to break the news to you?"
"Oh my god," she groans, pacing the length of the room, "I can't believe this."
"Julie, I knew you'd react this way. I thought about easing you and Carlos into the idea later. Why do you think I set them up in the studio?"
"So, like, just to be clear," she points out the window, "They are staying here?"
"Yes. For the time being,"
"Until when?"
"Until it's safe for them to go back,"
Her eyebrows knit together in confusion, "Safe? What do you mean by safe? What happened?"
She rushes at her dad, checking him for any injuries he might have sustained from his most recent 'business trip’.
He gently guides her hands away, smiling sadly at her, "I'm fine. We're fine. We'll all be fine."
Julie shakes her head. She couldn't believe how calmly her dad is taking everything. Also, even after all these years later, Julie can't wrap her mind around what her dad does for a living. And why he still does it even after her mom died.
“Someone’s trying to take over their kingdoms. In a... non-peaceful way. And it’s my job to protect them. So,” Her dad shrugs, “They’ll stay here. No one would think of finding three princes in Los Feliz.”
Life's already been so rough since then without her. Julie can't bear to think of what might happen if she had to lose her dad too...
Julie couldn’t really... argue with him on that. And she was starting to feel a bit guilty with her harsh welcome, but come on! Three princes? Living here? And just when she was trying to survive school and the whole music program mess...
“They’ll be... normal, right?” she has to ask, “Like chill and everything?” She swears she would pull her hair out if these princes were a bunch of freeloaders who didn’t know how to do anything for themselves.
“Well that part I was thinking to trust you with. Help them adjust to life as normal American teenagers,”
“Dad-”
“Please, mija?” he begs, busting out the puppy dog eyes and quivering lower lip, “For me?”
Julie sighs, no match for her dad’s persuasiveness, “Fine.”
“Yes!” he cheers, retreating to the kitchen to prepare dinner, “Thank you! You’re a livesaver!”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” she waves off, “I better get knighted or something for this...”

You’re Gay, Right?
Alex Mercer x Platonic!Reader
Tumblr media
Request from @kmsmedine: I would like to make a request :) maybe Alex is friends with the reader who also happens to be queer. Based off of the relationship, Reggie and like SERIOUSLY question wether Alex is fully gay or not (he is, they just act like they’re dating) if you could keep Alex gay that would be great because I don’t feel comfortable changing that lol. SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG
A/N: Alrighty! A platonic Alex x reader, let’s see how this goes! I hope you enjoy and I hope it’s alright, I was planning on writing more but I really just wanted to finish the requests and so I didn’t want to ramble lol. I love reblogs and feedback!

“Are you busy?” Alex’s head perks up at the sound of you barging into the studio unannounced as he looks down to the magazine of Julie’s he found.
“Why? Do you need something?” He raises a brow at you. You nod before smiling innocently, hoping he’d be more inclined to help you if you were nice about it. “Then yes, I’m very busy.”
Your act drops quick. “You suck.” You narrow your eyes at him and move to sit next to him on the couch. The magazine was pulled out of his hands and dropped on the table next to you as Alex sighs.
“What do you need now? A liver transplant?” He jokes and you smack his arm playfully, making him chuckle as he leans back on the couch and gives you his attention.
“Dating advice.” You admit sheepishly and Alex’s brows furrow before shooting up in surprise.
“No way! You and Lydia?” Alex’s grin was infectious and you nod quickly.
“She asked me out during class today and I swear to god, I almost lost my shit.” You smile at the memory. You knew something was wrong with her when she came into class with an uneasy expression on her face and once you asked her if everything was alright, Lydia just blurted it out.
“Well, I’m happy for you.” Alex says as he pats in your leg with a smile to which you give him one in return. “What do you need from me though? I mean, dating advice?”
“Yeah, I’ve never been on a date before.” Your voice was quiet as you rub your neck. “I figured no one better to ask dating advice from than my best friend.” Alex can understand that. He’s dated before and he’s dating Willie now, but you haven’t dated anyone.
“Well, what do you need to know?” Alex asks, wanting to be as helpful as possible.
“Umm, how do you… no, what about… hmmm…. no” you stutter as you try to think about everything you need to know before you groan in defeat and sink into the couch. “Everything?” Alex laughs at you and you roll your eyes before getting up. “You know what, I’ll ask Julie instead.” You decide and start towards the door but before you could get there, Alex appears in front of you, making you cross your arms. “It’s not fair you can do that.” You grumble.
He chuckles at you before leading you back over to the couch, tugging on his fanny pack as he smirks at you. “I’ll help you out Y/N.” He assures you before wrapping his arm around your shoulder. “How about you come by after rehearsal and we can have a practice date?”
“A practice date?” you ask with hope in your eyes. Alex nods and you wrap your arms around his torso. “Oh god, that would be perfect. Alex, you are literally the best. I love you so much.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Alex’s cheeks lit with his blush at your compliment. “I love you too.”
In the middle of his sentence, Luke and Reggie appear behind your back, their faces contorting in minor confusion after seeing how tightly you were holding Alex and paired with his statement of affection. “Uh, hey guys.” Luke says before falling into the chair behind you, making you jump out of shock.
“I’m buying bells for you all. That’s- I can’t do this anymore.” You shake your head, earning chuckles from the guys, but you were all too serious. You push yourself up, Alex standing as well and pulling his drumsticks out of his back pockets. “Okay, I’ll let you guys rehearse. I’ll tell Julie you’re here.” You pull out your phone and quickly send a text to your close friend before heading toward the door. “See you after, Alex.” You call out before you were gone and Alex tosses a smile at your retreating figure.
“What are you guys doing afterward?” Reggie asks out of interest as he moves to his bass, Luke moving to his guitar and both of their backs turned to Alex.
“Oh, we’re doing this date thing.” Alex shrugs and plants himself at his drums. As he started his playing, finding nothing odd about his statement, but to Reggie and Luke it was the opposite.
They turn to each other, their brows furrowing as they both mouth at each other, “date?”
Wasn’t Alex gay?
Like completely gay?
Didn’t he only like men?
Julie’s excited bouncing pulls their attention as she’s ready to start rehearsal, but the confusion never leaves them.
---
It’s been a week since Reggie and Luke’s first stroke of confusion in Alex and your relationship, and unfortunately for them, the two of you weren’t quite clearing things up.
The second time they were severely confused was when you and Lydia had a fight, something about her not shutting down someone who was flirting with her until almost 10 minutes had passed and you had shown up, trying to figure out who was this chick sitting with her breasts practically hanging out of her shirt and taking to your girlfriend at the coffeeshop. Lydia tried to play it off as nothing, but you weren’t stupid.
After her and your date, you went over to the studio, thankful to find Alex banging away on his drums to relieve some stress and relax. As soon as you walked in with a frown on your face, he came up with a different way to relax. This led to Alex and you using Luke’s old bed in the loft to practically cuddle in as you tell Alex everything that happened and he told you all about his day having to deal with the children called Luke and Reggie. He always managed to cheer you up and it wasn’t a shock when you managed to doze off with your arms around him and he was holding you back.
Reggie and Luke chose that moment to enter the studio.
“Alex?” Luke calls out when he didn’t see the drummer anywhere. Alex glances down at you, hesitating to yell back at him and settles for a whisper yell.
“We’re up here!” he says and you squirm in his arms, but don’t wake up. The plan to call again was discarded as Luke and Reggie appear at the foot of the bed.
They look at you first. Then to each other. Then to Alex.
They didn’t ask any questions, but so many thoughts were running straight through their brains at rates they couldn’t even control.
---
The last time Reggie and Luke were confused on Alex and your relationship was a month after the first, when Lydia and your relationship became quite evident it wasn’t going to work out and you and her broke up. You were heartbroken and Alex hated seeing you so upset.
While you and Julie were at school, the boys decided to head out to check out some of the stores they haven’t seen since they’ve been back. Sure, they didn’t have any money, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t look. Well, Reggie and Luke just wanted to look. As soon as Alex saw a necklace with a mini drum set, he knew there was no way he was walking out of the store without it for you. A reminder of your friendship with him, something you always swear keeps you sane and Alex figures this will be perfect.
“Whatcha looking at?” Reggie comes up to glance over his shoulder, moving his attention away from the cute pair of cheerleaders he had been pretending to flirt with for the last few minutes.
“How wrong would it be if I stole this for Y/N?” Alex asks him and Reggie furrows his brows, not because Alex was thinking of stealing something, but because he was thinking of stealing it for you.
“Uh, I mean- Yeah, I think she’d like uh, I think she’d like it.” Reggie stutters out and for the first time, Alex catches on to Reggie’s confusion.
“What’s wrong?” Alex makes the decision and nabs the necklace of the hook before shoving it into his fanny pack before anyone could see a floating necklace.
Reggie just hums and focuses on Alex’s questioning state. He didn’t know if he should bring his curiosity to light or not. He hesitates before shaking his head. “Nothing.” He settles on but Alex narrows his eyes.
“No, tell me.”
“What’s going on?” Luke asks as he approaches the duo, seeing the different states between the two boys.
“Alex is getting Y/N a necklace with a drum set on it.” Reggie says quickly and Luke’s face turns to the same expression Reggie had when Alex first told him.
“And there’s something wrong with him that he’s not telling me and by that look, you have the same problem. What’s wrong?” Alex tries again. Luke shakes his head, like Reggie he was unsure whether he should say anything. Alex gave them a thin-lipped look before the three of them appeared back at the studio. Luke and Reggie were sitting on the couch and Alex was already pacing in front of them. “Okay. Okay, tell me what’s wrong with the two of you, especially when I mentioned Y/N because I’ve seen the looks you give me every time I mention her, so what’s going on?”
The two boys exchange looks at Alex’s speech and decide it’s better to get answer than to assume. Luke clears his throat. “You’re gay, right?”
Alex stops his pacing at Luke’s obscure question. “What?”
“You like guys, right?” Reggie continues, shifting in his seat. “Like, only guys?”
Alex looks between the two of them and straightens his back. “I’m not attracted to girls, if that’s what you’re trying to ask.” Sighs escape the two boy’s mouths. They were right. Alex was gay. 100%, fully gay. You and Alex were just friends. Alex senses their relief before it hits him. “You thought I was dating Y/N, didn’t you?”
“No.” Luke says the same time Reggie says, “Maybe just a little.” They share a look, embarrassed not to be on the same page of their answers.
Alex scrunches his face. He could never have even imagined dating you. Not that there was something so awful about dating you, that one fake date he set up for you went well only because the whole time he was poking fun at your lack of knowledge of what to do on a date. He just never imagined it because he liked boys and you were a girl, and you were never interested in him in more than a BFF way. Nothing about the two of you would work out romantically.
“You know she just broke up with her girlfriend like yesterday, right?” Alex asks the boys and they both freeze.
“Wait, she had a girlfriend?”
“Wait, she likes girls?”
They share a look, suddenly realizing they don’t know much about you and Alex stares at them. “You guys really don’t pay attention to the right things, do you?” When the “assumption twins” shrug, Alex rolls his eyes and pulls out the necklace, glancing down at it with a smile before disappearing to Julie’s room, hoping to find a small giftbag or something he can borrow to be able to give you this “feel better” present tonight, along with a very interesting and funny story.

Dad!Luke Patterson
no one asked for this but @willexx and I wanted angst but said “no! dad Luke vibes only” so we accidentally invented Emily Rose Patterson and here are the head canons that no one asked for but you’re getting anyway bc she’s wrapped around both of our fingers so:
Luke and Julie name their daughter after their mothers respectfully bc they would
they don’t just call her Emily they call her “Emily Rose”
before she’s born, Luke writes her a song
little Emily Rose used to sit on her dad’s knees while he plays her his guitar and sings
She loved music when she was little, but bc her parents are so incredibly talented she never felt like she could live up to their expectations and legacy so she grew up to hate music
Emily Rose is a skater bc she always felt like an outsider and bonded with Uncle Willie through that
This frustrates Luke IMMENSELY
he’s venting to Julie one night when they’re getting ready for bed
“how is she my daughter? HOW IS SHE MY DAUGHTER AND NOT LOVE MUSIC?"
Emily Rose overhears him and she ends up running away that night bc she just can't take his disappointment but Luke isn't disappointed he just really is genuinely confused
She runs away to the skatepark and when she introduces herself to new people, she says her name is Rose Molina because no, she’s not Luke’s daughter
She’s also MEGA talented like her mom so all Luke wants for her is to recognize that she’s a WRECKING BALL and to step into her greatness
he immediately knows she ran away when he goes to check on her and she’s not there
"i lost her, jules. i did this. and i can't even blame her because i did the EXACT same thing when i was her age. i was so scared of becoming my parents, that this is exactly what i did." and he doesn't even realize how many "i's" are in that sentence
Luke’s relationship with Julie is strained but she’s there to guide him through this
She’s the only one that can remind him of his own mother and how that made him feel and understands where he is coming from
she doesn’t support it, not at all, this is their daughter they’re talking about, but she knows how one track minded Luke can be when it comes to music; it’s how he’s wired
He goes to the studio to blow off steam and Julie is there to play with him but she helps him realize that he needs another form of communication
bc he just doesn't know how to communicate things with emily rose bc he's always communicated through music
and tho julie blows off the steam while playing music with him she also helps him realize that that's where the issue lies. he needs to learn a different way of communication---it's gonna be hard but it's for their daughter
he takes baby steps too like literally just asking her how her day was
when he finds Emily Rose at the skatepark they sit on top of the ramp and have the heart to heart
he's like "but you gotta be patient with me, ok? im gonna be asking the stupidest questions i literally don't know how to communicate unless it's through music, but i'm going to try, ok? i'm gonna try because i love you so much and you and your mom are the most important things in my life--"
she cuts him off "i thought it was music?" with a smirk and luke rolls his eyes "ok second important," and emily rose is like  and he's like "im kidding im kidding really i am it's you and your mom. that's it, music is second. always"
she has a skatboarding tournament a few days later and invites luke to it (which he goes to) and he's SUPER impressed bc she actually is really talented
and he goes to some random dude "that's my daughter!!!!!!!"
he ends up booking a gig for the next tournament and she's super upset bc once again her dad is going to outshine her
but she learns to convey that disappointment and she tells him and he’s like "ok--i'll cancel the gig. i'll still be there, but just as your dad,"
Emily Rose goes to his next gig, which she never does, but bc it’s about the compromise
and now she's the one that's like "damn maybe my dad IS cool"
some girls are like "ISNT HE SO HOT" during the show and emily rose is like "idk he kind of looks like a dad to me"
she hates music sure but she loves getting to stand on top of the amps when her dad does a guitar solo bc "wow so this is what it's like to be tall"
one day julie can't perform bc she's sick and they have a really important gig and luke is HEARTBROKEN so emily rose takes the lead spot since her dad has been so supportive recently
Luke cries
Emily Rose, Reggie, and Alex are always there to tease him so bad
"god luke, really??? why are you such a family man now?? it was bad enough when you just had one girl wrapped around your finger, but now you have two???"

The first time he saw her was Freshman year during football tryouts. While he was on the field, trying to pay attention to whatever the coach was blabbing about, she was running around it. Her ponytail whipping around her head as her feet pounded against the red gravel of the race rink. She was a flash of pink and brown hair, but it was enough for Luke to become infatuated with her. He didn’t even care when he became the quarterback that year. All he cared about was her. He needed to know who she was and ask her on a date, even if it were the last thing he did.
The first time he ever spoke to her was a few days later, after their first game in Freshman year. She was sitting in the bleachers, cheering on the team, and Luke couldn’t help but feel his heart flutter as this beautiful girl cheered him on with every touchdown he scored.
After the game, she came down to say hi to Bobby, the team’s Running Back and the girl’s best friend. Luke knew this. He had seen the two of them together a lot during lunches and in the hallways, but never dared to ask the boy that became a friend of his too, what this girl’s name was or what her deal was.
But the fact that she came to say hi to him, gave Luke an opportunity to talk to her, too. “Hey, Bobbers, nice touchdowns,” the girl teased her best friend, who hadn’t scored any today. He did assist on some of Luke’s touchdowns.
“Oh, shut it, y/n,” Bobby muttered and shoved her in the shoulder. He turned when Luke patted him on the back as he joined the group. “Good game, Patterson,” he said to the floppy haired boy next to him. The boy who couldn’t keep his eyes off his best friend for one second.
“You too, Bobbers,” he repeated y/n’s nickname for her best friend, earning an eyebrow raise from the girl he’s been crushing for a week straight now. Even her eyes were captivating. The dark brown reflected gold in the setting sun.
“You making fun of my nicknames, Patterson?” she asked, one corner of her mouth tugging up into a smirk. The boy became a stuttering mess at the teasing tone in her voice.
“No, I uhm… I-I…” he scratched the back of his neck at a loss for words. “I’m Luke, by the way.” Y/N giggle reached his ears like a sweet lullaby. She shook her head at the boy.
“Oh, I know.”
Her straightforward reply haunted his brain for years to follow. He never knew what it meant but it became the thing that started a blossoming friendship. A friendship that made them the infamous ‘it-couple-that-wasn’t-a-couple’ by junior year. A title neither of you wanted, being in the ‘popular’ clique was already too much.
“Chicaaaas!” Luke called out as he and Bobby walked into the student lounge where y/n and Lydia, her best friend and captain of the cheerleading team, were having some tea and chatting about girl stuff -- as Luke himself liked to say. “Party tonight at Alexis Bryan’s place, are we going or?” he rubbed his hands together as if he’d just concocted the greatest scheme of all time.
Y/N smiled up at both boys and said, “Lyds and I were actually talking about having a sleepover tonight and making a puzzle together.” The two boys groaned and rolled their eyes at her answer. “What?” she asked.
“You sound like two grandmas!” Bobby exclaimed and ran his hand through his dark hair.
“Hey! No hate against grandmas!” Lydia exclaimed with a scowl on her face. Bobby raised his hands in defense before everyone turned to Luke, who was looking down at y/n.
“I don’t know, Luke… I really don’t feel like running into Matt tonight.”
“Come on, y/n. I’m literally nothing with my party partner in crime!” His eyes begged and pleaded, which was something y/n hadn’t quite learned how to resist yet. She’d tried to. Many a time. But she always had to give in eventually.
Even now. “Fine,” she said. “But you’re gonna have to promise to dance with me!” Luke rolled his eyes at the compromise, but couldn’t help the smile finding its way to his cheeks. No matter how hard it was for y/n to say no to Luke, it was twice as hard for him to say no to her.
“Fine,” he grumbled.
That night, as y/n took her scalding hot shower in preparation for the party, she reminisced over the past few years and how much her life changed since she started high school. Her mind wandered over the first day, when she clung to Bobby’s bicep because she was so scared of all the new things around her. She remembered how tiny and scared she felt, but all of that washed away when Bobby reassured her he wouldn’t leave her side. Only when he went to try out for football and she tried out for the running team. Then her mind jumped to the day she met Luke at the football game and how he immediately caught her attention. Ever since that day, her life had become this big-ass chaos. If it weren’t for Luke, she would probably just be part of the sprint relay team. But thanks to being so close to the quarterback, y/n was popular by association. Though, she wouldn’t change it for the world. What she would change was how all her dates had always been scared of Luke. All except for one. Matthew. He somehow managed to get through Luke’s and Bobby’s shield of brotherly protection -- as they called it. The two had been together for a few months until the whispers started. Whispers about Matthew cheating on y/n, or y/n cheating on Matthew with Luke. None of which was very healthy for the relationship, so they broke it off.
It would’ve been friendly if she didn’t see Matthew the day after their break up kissing one of her teammates. That’s when she knew the whispers about him weren’t just rumors. Even up until this day, she wondered if her sister ever had a thing with him, like the whispers suggested.
As her Ace of Base CD played on her stereo, she started to make a move-on with her outfit and makeup. She opted for a black body con dress with spaghetti straps that accentuated her curves in just the right places. For her makeup, she decided on a neutral look and swiped the light browny color across her eyelids.
By the time she started applying her mascara, there was a light tapping on her window. She turned around to find Luke on the small balcony at your window. He was wearing his Screams from The Attic band tee with the sleeves cut off and his trusty black jeans, decorated with the infamous chains and blue rabbit’s foot.
She opened the window door to let him in and turned to grab her shoes. “Hey, you re--wowza!” he cut himself off when his eyes took in every inch of the girl in front of him. A blush crept to y/n’ cheeks as she strapped the black heels on. “That’s a fly outfit, girl.”
“Thanks, Patterson. Let’s bounce, yeah?”
Luke climbed over the stone enclosure of the balcony and carefully let himself hang down from the bottom before letting go and landing gracefully on his feet. He whispered a ‘yes’ under his breath before looking up to find y/n climbing over as elegantly as she could. Though, with that dress on, she was about to flash someone and the lucky recipient of the little sneak peek was of course Luke.
“Is today a special occasion?” he asked. Y/N turned her head to look down at Luke while hanging onto the balcony for dear life. “You only wear red lingerie on special occasions.”
“Why are you looking down my dress, you creep?” The giggle that followed the words reassured Luke that she wasn’t offended by it. It was a typical thing to bicker about in their friendship.
“You flashed your knickers at me, Peaches, don’t blame me.” He held his hands up in defense, shooting her a sheepish look. Y/N scoffed at that and rolled her eyes before dropping down to hang from the balcony the same way Luke had done.
“You are so lucky I love you,” she mumbled and then screamed, “Patterson, think fast!” She let go, and hoped Luke would be fast enough to catch her since she wasn’t going to stick the landing on her heels quite as much as Luke did. Thankfully though, Luke’s fast reflexes made him move underneath her just in time to catch her, bridal style.
Their eyes locked for a moment, both of them suddenly realizing how close they really were. A smile made its way to y/n’s features and she leaned in to press a kiss to his cheek before flicking her legs out of his grasp and patting his chest twice.
“Thanks, buddy. That was like a crazy trust fall.”
Leaving Luke behind to reflect on whatever just happened, y/n skipped towards Bobby’s car and got into the passenger’s seat. She planted a kiss on Bobby's cheek and then turned around as Luke got in the back, finding two other boys she knew all too well.
“‘sup homies?” she grinned cheesily at the blonde and brunette she knew as Alex and Reggie. The two other members of Sunset Curve, the band Bobby and Luke formed when they met in freshman year.
The two boys smiled back at y/n while Luke gave her a glare, probably because she stole his seat in the front. However, y/n didn’t care or notice, for that matter. Her mind was wrapped up in something else instead.
“So, Alex…” she started, capturing the blond guy’s attention. “How was your date with Driss?” she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, and it sent a scarlet color up to Alex’s cheeks. Even though his parents didn’t care for his sexual orientation, he was glad his friends supported him, even if that meant y/n’s curiosity in his dating life.
“It was okay…” he replied humbly, but y/n wasn’t y/n if she let this slide.
“Where did he take you? What did you do? What did you wear?” she gasped, “Did you kiss?” The boys collectively chuckled at y/n’s antics. All of them had endured her searching for cute date stories.
“He took me to this really pretty lake where we had a picnic and we screamed into the dark,” he reminisced dreamily with a tender smile on his face. Y/N’s heart melted at the sight of Alex’s happiness. It was about time he got a happy ending too.
“Did you kiss?” she repeated her question.
Alex exhaled, a pout forming on his face as he said, “No… But! He did ask me for a second date tomorrow!” Y/N’s face lit up entirely as she clapped her hands giddily, making Alex laugh.
“I am so happy for you, Alex.” She reached out her hand between the two front seats, and Alex grabbed it, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.
The car abruptly came to a stop, causing y/n to lose her balance a little. “The hell, dude?” she asked Bobby, glaring at the driver.
“We’re here, so unless you wanna continue this little tea party, get out of my car!” Y/N glanced at the other boys, who were equally as confused about the boy’s sudden behavior.
“Someone needs to get laid tonight,” y/n muttered while she unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of Bobby’s jeep, the boys following suit. She came to a halt in front of the house, looking up at the castle of a house. Music was thumping through the white brick walls and people were bustling about on the front lawn, smoking, drinking and talking.
“You ready?” Reggie asked, placing a hand on y/n’s left shoulder while another hand grabbed her right one. Looking up, she found Alex smiling down at her with that reassuring smile of his. When she felt another hand on her right shoulder and a kiss to the back of her head, she knew she was good to go. She had all her best friends with her. She would be fine, even if she ran into the devil’s spawn.
“If you wanna dip, just give us the sign and we’ll bounce,” Luke told her as he stood behind her. Slowly, but surely, y/n began to nod her head, mentally preparing herself for what’s about to come.
She'd made up a million of scenes where she’d confront Matthew, coming up with the wittiest comebacks she could possibly think of. The perfect monologue that would forever be stuck in her head since she was too much of a shy girl to actually say those out loud. She might seem like a clever, obnoxious popular girl, but deep down, she was still the little geek from Middle School at heart.
“Good to go,” she mumbled and started her way up to the house with Alex’s hand still in hers and the other boys safely surrounding her.
As they walked into the house, they turned a few heads and with it began the rumor mill, like it always did. There was always something to spill about the group, it seemed.
“Y/N!” a loud shriek brought y/n back out of her thoughts. When she looked up, she found Lydia walking up to them with arms wide open. As she hugged her best friend, y/n could smell the alcohol on her.
“Hey, Lyds,” y/n chuckled, “Been here long?” She pushed the strawberry blonde hair off her and took in her presence. She was wearing her lucky red dress with the plunging neckline, which was enough information for y/n to know her best friend was drinking for some courage to get a boy into her bed.
“About an hour,” she slurred, and then her eyes fell on the boys behind y/n. Another shriek deafened y/n as the girl stumbled into Reggie’s arms for a hug. The boy giggled, steadying the tipsy girl. Each on their turn, the boys handed the drunk girl off to the next, knowing she wouldn’t stop until she had hugged every single one of them. “So, what are we thinking, shots?” she asked as she leaned on Bobby’s shoulder for balance.
“I think you need some soda,” Bobby replied before grumpily grabbing Lydia’s hand and leading her towards the kitchen. Y/N’s eyebrows furrowed as she watched the two walk off. Something wasn’t quite right with her best friend, she just couldn’t place a finger on what it was.
“What’s gotten his panties in a twist?” she asked the others, who all simply shrugged.
Within the first ten minutes, the group was split up. While y/n was talking to her running team, Alex was occupied with Driss, Reggie was playing beer pong with some people and Luke was, unsurprisingly flirting with some girl.
Luke was notorious for his flirting with girls, so it didn’t surprise y/n too much when her eyes fell on the popular quarterback, surrounded by a bunch of cheerleaders. Though she had to admit, she loved it most when the flirting was directed at her instead of other girls.
When their eyes locked, Luke shot her a wink with that overconfident smirk on his face that made y/n roll her eyes. After blowing him a kiss, y/n walked back into the kitchen for a refill of her beer. If she was going to survive this party, she was going to need some more party fuel.
“Hey, y/n!” a familiar voice sounded from the other side of the kitchen. When she looked up, she found Astrid and Alexis Bryan, hostesses of tonight’s soiree. It was Astrid who’d called her name. Y/N raised her red cup at the girl as she made her way over to her, leaving her sister by herself. “How you doing?”
“Pretty good. Nice party you got going on here,” she answered, nodding her head to the dancing students in her living room. Astrid chuckled and sipped from her own beer while leaning against the counter.
“Yeah, it is pretty rad,” Astrid mumbled, “Though, we have to thank Alexis for that. Could never have done this myself, but she did, so…” A snicker left y/n’s body as she softly tapped her foot to the beat of the music and her eyes scanned the party.
“Let’s go dance, hm?” Astrid held out her hand for y/n to take, which she gladly did, and let the girl lead her towards the dance floor while sipping her beer.
It’s about time y/n let loose for once. She always used to get so worked up at parties, knowing Matthew was going to be there and she’d tell the boys she wanted to leave before it ever got any fun. But this time, she wasn’t going to let a boy ruin her fun. She was here now, she looked bomb and was having fun with some of the girls from her class.
“Y/N!” Lydia’s voice shrieked once more as she joined y/n on the dance floor with a red cup in her hand while the other landed on the back of y/n’s neck, pulling her in to kiss her on the cheek. “You know I love you, right?”
Y/N glanced over at Bobby, who was keeping an eye out for Lydia from a few feet away.
“I tried to give her soda,” he shrugged. Y/N rolled her eyes as an amused smile made its way to her cheeks. “It’s your best friend,” he added with his hands raised in defense.
Y/N reached out and grabbed Bobby’s wrist, pulling him into the group to dance. He was hesitant at first, but eventually gave in and sang along to the song at the top of his lungs while supporting Lydia in a dance.
Soon, Reggie and Alex had joined the group too, and y/n just knew tonight would be amazing. All she ever needed were her friends, some good music and booze.
“Having fun, sweetheart?” Y/N’s skin crawled upon hearing the voice and feeling the familiar hands on her waist. That amazing night did not include him.
She stopped moving all together and stepped away from him, only for him to pull her closer.
“Let go, Matt!” she yelled and tried to step away again. He twirled her around, leaving his hands firmly on her waist. His bright blue eyes looked down at her with that familiar smile of his playing at his lips. A smile that used to make her heart swell now felt like a violation.
“Ah, you still remember the sound of my voice,” he cooed. One hand came up to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. “I’ve missed you, y/n. I know we broke up, but I realize now that it was a mistake. We’re perfect for each other…”
Y/N almost melted as the words reached her ears until she was reminded by the past they shared. Until she was reminded of what he’d done to her and how much it  had hurt. All the pain and sadness suddenly came back to her. She was feeling all of it again.
She took a step back, finally freeing herself from his claws. She said, “Don’t.” Her eyes were dark and angry, her face stoic. A whole new side of y/n Matthew had never seen before. As he muttered her name, he took a step closer, wanting to hold her in his arms again. “Don’t take another step in my direction,” she said, now a lot firmer than before. “Don’t ever think you can apologize your way back into my arms, Matt.”
The commotion had grabbed everyone’s attention so much so that even the music had stopped abruptly. Luke got up from leaning against the wall with a girl pinned against it, when he heard y/n’s voice raise, while her other friends perked up too.
“Please, y/n… You’re the only person I ever loved. You’re the only person I still love.”
Y/N scoffed at this and shook her head in disbelief while kissing her teeth. “Do you think I’m naive, Matt?” Matt looked up at her, pleadingly. “You really think I’d fall for your lies? After everything we’ve been through? After everything you’ve done to me?” She didn’t care who was watching, she needed to get the monologue she’d thought of in the shower out of her system. It’s now or never.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, y/n… I thought we broke up as friends?”
A collective gasp fell over the whole entire room, followed by the usual whispers.
“Yeah, we did. Until I found out you already had your tongue down Sam’s throat the day after. The day after, Matt! I know you were seeing her and so many other girls while we were dating. I hear the whispers too, you know? And I thought, I really thought you were speaking the truth when you told me none of the whispers were true.” Her voice wavered, but she took a deep breath and bit back the tears. She had to stay strong.
“Fine, the rumors were true, but so what, y/n?! The whispers about you were true, too!” The volume of his voice grows, his tone sharper, firmer. Back when they were dating, y/n got scared whenever the volume of his voice rose, but not this time.
Y/N shook her head, her tongue gliding over her teeth. “You hear whispers from people around you, saying I slept with Luke when you know damn well that Luke’s like my brother and we don’t look at each other that way. When you hear whispers, you have to scream and you’re screaming at me for being disloyal when the only one who was ever loyal in our relationship was me. I know about whispers, Matt. I saw the way you looked at my sister. At Alexis. At Amber. At Sam. So don’t you dare say I was ever the only one you loved. Because you, Matthew, don’t love anyone or care about anyone but yourself.”
Luke jammed his hands into his pockets as he listened to y/n’s words. Even though they hurt, he couldn’t help but feel proud of her for standing up to her oppressor. He watched as y/n said her final words before running up the stairs, leaving everyone confused and in a humble of even more rumors and whispers. Shaking his head, he followed y/n upstairs, finding her on the balcony at the end of the hallway.
“So, you finally did it, huh?” His voice made her jump slightly, but she calmed down straight away when realizing it was just him. “Your monologuing in the mirror paid off.” He went to stand next to her, leaning against the concrete enclosure.
Y/N wiped the tears away with the back of her hand, chuckling. Of course Luke would know she’d been practicing in her mirror. This had been brewing for a while and now that it was finally out in the open, lingering in the air in that living room down there, she didn’t know if she should feel relieved or scared.
“Hey,” Luke nudged her with his shoulder, shooting a small smile, “I’m proud of you.”
Her lips curled up into a smile before she wrapped both arms around his bicep, her head resting against his shoulder as she took a deep breath. “I can’t believe I said all of that in there,” she chuckled.
“Yeah, me neither,” said Luke and he pressed a kiss to her hair before laying his head down on hers. “Did you see Matt’s face though? He was genuinely scared of you just then.”
Y/N scoffed and let go of him, making her way to the small bench in the corner of the small terrace. “I doubt he was scared of me. What he was, was shocked because I never talked back to him whenever we fought.”
Luke turned around, but kept leaning against the fence, crossing his arms. “I’m glad you finally did. That asshole needed to know that what he was doing wasn’t cool. He needed to know that that’s not how you treat a woman.”
Y/N raised her eyebrow at him, leaning back on her hands. “And you know how to treat a woman.” Luke wasn’t sure if it was a question or a statement, so he didn’t answer straight away. He mulled over a good answer as he walked up to her, taking a seat next to her on the bench, their shoulders touching.
"You know how I’d treat a woman?” he asked.
“Please, enlighten me,” she replied.
Luke inhaled deeply before the words poured out of him like he’d been the one monologuing this in front of his mirror. “I would treat her like a goddess. I would build her temples out of words and love and affection. I would make sure she was happy and satisfied before my own needs were fulfilled. I’d write songs to her and she’d be my muse for my music. I would build empires of paragraphs, castles of melodies inspired by her. I would flood her senses with words and make sure she knew all of that was for her. I would build her a whole new world. I’d grant her a universe filled with words and music of love.”
Y/N let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. “Woah, Patterson…” Luke shrugged and offered her a shy smile before looking out into the dark night in front of them. “Careful or you’ll make me fall in love with you.”
“That’s the intention,” he muttered, but his words were overpowered by Lydia’s shrieking.
“Here you are!” she yelled, then turned her head to someone inside. “Bobbers! I found our love birds!” She turned her head to the two on the bench and smiled. “Come on, you guys! There’s a party downstairs! We need to celebrate y/n’s greatest victory ever!”
“We can dip if you don’t wanna go back out there,” Luke told her as she stood up.
“I think I’ll be okay,” she smiled thankfully at him before reaching out her hand for him to take. “Come on, let’s get jiggy!” Luke smirked before gently placing his hand in hers and letting her pull him up to his feet.
Together, the two of them followed Lydia and Bobby back downstairs to the party, their fingers laced together as they made their way through the crowd. As if on cue, the people started to whisper again as they passed, but y/n didn’t care. She had her best friends with her, she just stood up to her ex-boyfriend, and she found out her best friend was a feminist. There’s no better night than that. She was not going to let it get ruined by a few whispers.
For the rest of the night, y/n danced and partied with her friends until the sun came up again and it was time to head home. Like every other party night, the six of them ended up in Bobby’s garage. Luke and y/n snuggled up on his couch, Bobby and Lydia in a sleeping bag together, and Reggie and Alex spooning on an air mattress.
Can’t get more perfect than that.
New week, fresh start, people always said. Y/N used to think of it as bullshit, but this time around, she could actually feel it. She felt refreshed, as if a whole new world opened up to her. As if she’d started a new chapter, nay, a new book. One with a happy continuation. One without Matt.
Monday also meant practice after school. For all of them. The football team had practice out on the field while the sprint relay team ran around it and the cheerleaders practiced on the sidelines. It was the one extracurricular they did together without actually doing it together.
“Hey, y/n…” a voice she recognized as Sam’s made her look away from the boys on the football field. Her voice sounded ambivalent, which confused y/n as the girl would normally be chirpy and cheery.
“Hey, Sam. ‘Sup?” y/n gathered her long hair in both hands and tied it up at the top of her head with a bright pink scrunchie.
“I just--I wanted to apologize for what I did…” she mumbled, her eyes cast on her fidgeting finger. Y/N had never seen her teammate like this. The otherwise lively sport nut now sounded guilty and like the light had been snuffed out of her. “I knew you and Matt were together and I still let him…” she trailed off as though saying the words would make them true.
Y/N flinched at the mention of the boy’s name. She had hoped it wouldn’t have been brought up and besides the occasional whisper she’d caught during lunch, the objective had been quite successful. Until now.
“I really don’t wanna talk about him right now, Sam,” y/n muttered, and when she looked up at Sam, she knew she had to say something to ease the girl’s mind. “But this wasn’t your fault. Matt should’ve not tried anything with you. He was the disloyal one, he was the one that cheated on me, not you.” A teasing grin played at y/n’s lips when she continued, “You know, unless you’re gonna tell me now you doped yourself up for practice and are gonna make me lose.”
Sam worriedly looked up, but when she noticed the grin on y/n’s face, she immediately calmed down and couldn’t help but laugh.
She shook her head, “No, I’m no cheater.”
Y/N’s lips curled up into a smile as she grabbed Sam’s hand and squeezed it, letting her know the two are on good terms. Nothing should ever break up the team, especially not a boy.
“She's talking about you, y/n?”
Speak of the devil…
Y/N turned around to where the voice came from, finding a tense Matt in front of her. She should’ve known there was no way of avoiding him all day today.
“I knew you were lying to me. I knew you and Patterson were a thing and you cheated on me with him.” His voice resounded across the entire area, attracting everyone’s attention with the sudden commotion.
The football team stopped their exercise half-way, much to the coach’s dismay, and the cheerleaders broke up their human pyramid to find out what was going on. Luke, Bobby and Lydia were the only ones of each team to give incentive to the rest of the team to walk up to the ex-couple fighting.
“And you just kept on guilting me because I was the only one to be disloyal,” Matt grunted, shaking his head in disbelief. “I heard the whispers, y/n. I heard what happened the other night!”
Y/N’s eyebrows rose, unimpressed at his outburst. “What did you hear this time, Matthew?”
“You and Patterson getting dirty on the balcony at Bryan’s party!” he spat, and drops of saliva actually found their way to y/n’s face. She kissed her teeth before wiping her cheek with one forceful finger.
“Have you learned nothing, asshole?!” y/n shouted. She wasn’t going to keep her cool anymore. Ever since Friday, she learned that she was able to stand up to herself, no matter how scary Matt could get.
She stepped forward, erasing the space between the two as they stood chest-to-chest. Seeing this, Luke halted and averted his eyes. He thought this situation would actually give him a hand at finally asking y/n out for real, but it seemed like the two were about to make up.
“Didn’t you learn about whispers being just that, whispers? Nothing happened between Luke and me. Not when we were dating, not at Alexis’ party. And the fact that you even dare to insinuate I would be capable of cheating just shows once more that you don’t know me and you don’t care about me.” She pressed her index finger to his chest harshly. “You are a selfish, self-indulgent prick who doesn’t deserve all the wonderful women that have thrown themselves at you. You don’t deserve anything and--” y/n flinched as she watched his hand come up and two hands pulled her away from Matt.
“Patterson, stay out of this,” Matt growled. Y/N opened her eyes at the mention of her best friend’s name, finding him between her and her ex now. As she turned her head, Bobby was standing behind her, his hands on her shoulder.
Matt turned back to Y/N, the growl persistent on his face. “No,” Luke said, capturing Matt’s attention once more.
“No?” His voice was abrasive, a tone y/n had gotten used to over the years.
“No,” Luke repeated. He glanced back at y/n before jamming his hands into his trousers and looking at Matt again. Though Luke was a lot smaller than the broad, tall teenager in front of him, his confidence was twice the size of the other footballer. “Technically, you’re pinning me down as a home wrecker, so you pretty much pulled me into this yourself.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows at the new-found confidence. Luke was cocky and flirty around girls, but he’d never been this overly confident version of himself towards his teammates. It was refreshing to see this entirely different side from her best friend.
“Well, yeah, because she clearly did cheat on me with you. Why else would you guys be fooling around after her little outburst to me?” The overconfidence Matt normally carried had now washed away. He hadn’t seen this side of the quarterback yet either.
Luke let out an airy laugh, and retorted, “Yeah, well, see, that’s where you’re wrong.” He tilted his head ever so slightly, his green eyes looking up at the big, burly footballer. “There’s this misconception about our relationship, you see? Y/N and I are the best of friends, and I get it we’d look super hot together as a couple, but the sad truth is -- well, sad for me -- that Y/N has always been too busy being loyal to an asshole like you to see that. So, despite popular belief, y/n and I are just the best of friends and she deserves the world, more even, she deserves a whole-ass new universe. Which is something you can’t give her.”
Y/N stared at her best friend in awe. She had never seen this side of him but she couldn’t say she disliked it. In fact, there was this attractiveness about an overconfident Luke defending her against her ex-boyfriend. And reciting the words in her mind, she realized something she hadn’t seen before. Luke was in love with her and he’d tried to tell her so many times before, but she took it as harmless flirting.
Moreover, y/n realized she was in love with her best friend too.
“But you, Matthew McSomething,” y/n chuckled at Luke’s name dig at the Scottish boy, especially with the added bonus of an attempt at a Scottish accent, “You are too self-indulgent to even give her a fraction of a world. So, unless you can actually give her more than that, stay away from her…”
“Or what?” Matt snarled.
“I’ll put you on the bench for the rest of the season. And we all know you can only get the girls when you’re on the field, don’t we?”
Matt’s eyes widened at Luke’s words as the panic set in. Matthew McGregor was nothing on the bench. Even worse, he was less than nothing. On the bench, he’d get associated with Bruce Frederickson, coach’s nephew who was just there because he was family and not because he was actually good at football.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought,” Luke murmured and then turned to the coach, who, too, had joined in the drama. “I think we can hit the showers now, can’t we, coach?” The tall man nodded his head slowly, unsure about what had just happened to his star player. He’d only ever got this confident on the field, never off. Even the coach knew that.
As all teams dispersed, y/n grabbed a hold of her favorite cheerleader’s arm, pulling her aside while Luke and Bobby walked away. They didn’t even notice y/n’s panicked rush.
“Lyds, I think I’m in love with my best friend,” she whispered. Her eyes were wide, her tone hurried and filled with panic. The strawberry blonde’s lips curled up into a grin as she patted her best friend’s hair.
“Oh, we know, sweetie…” she said, confusing y/n even more, “It’s about time you admitted it.” Y/N rolled her eyes and shook her head as she anxiously played around with the friendship bracelet around Lydia’s wrist.
“I’ve been dreaming about my knight in shining armour since I was ten, Lyds. I never thought I would find it in my best friend. My best friend, Lydia!” The girl let out an endeared laugh as she tucked a flyaway behind the other girl’s ear.
“I know, sweetie.” Her hand landed on y/n’s cheek and her thumb gently swiped across the skin. “Now, go! Tell him!”
“Yeah! Right! Right!” she vigorously nodded her head, but she didn’t move a muscle.
“Y/N… You’re gonna have to move if you wanna go and talk to him.”
Y/N opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out, so she shut it again. “Right, yeah…” she swallowed a lump as the fear sank in. She had never had to tell her best friend she had feelings for him. All of this was new to her. How does one even confess that?
“Sweetie, you can do this, okay? Just follow your gut.” Lydia’s tone was stern, but it was exactly what y/n needed to hear. “Like how you don’t calculate your moves on the track, but you just go! Like Gail Devers!” The mention of y/n’s absolute favorite athlete made her look up.
“Gail Devers was actually very meticulous,” she corrected her best friend’s metaphor.
Lydia deadpanned, “Not the point, y/l/n.” She placed  her hands on y/n’s shoulders and turned her around, pushing her towards the field. “Now go! Shoo!” She waved her hands in a dismissive manner, and after one more hurried look, y/n sprinted across the field. “Atta girl!” she heard Lydia yell before making her way into the school, through corridors until she reached the boy’s locker room where Bobby had just walked out of.
The boy glanced at her, and when he realized what she was there for, he nodded his head towards the closed door, giving her permission to go inside. He said, “He’s the last one in.”
Y/N kissed Bobby on the cheek before opening the door. She was met with the stench of sweat and deodorant, but it didn’t phase her. Not today. The girl was on a mission.
She weaved through the rows of lockers until she found him standing near a bench, zipping up his trusty black jeans, shirtless. Her eyes scanned his entire physique from head to to toe until she realized she was actually checking out her best friend in a way she hadn’t done before.
“Y/N?”
For a second, she tried to calculate her next move, but then decided to throw it all overboard, and instead marched up to him. She grabbed his face with both hands and brought him down to meet her lips. His breath hitched in his throat before melting into the kiss and bringing his hands up to her waist, pulling her closer into him.
“Give me that whole-ass universe,” she muttered as they pulled away to come up for air. Luke huffed, a relieved smile pulling at his lips. This was what he’d been dreaming of for so long; kissing her, holding her, cherishing her.
“I thought you’d never ask,” he replied before kissing her again. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for ages,” he added, his words disappearing into her mouth.
“Oh, I know.”
With the same words their friendship started, started a whole new chapter in their lives and their relationship. Everything would change now, but neither of them cared. They were granted a whole new universe.

here’s a lighthearted collab born of riffs with the one and only @lydias--stiles. warning: fluff. lots of it.
enjoy!!!
---
"It's decade day!" Julie hollers as she storms into the studio, Alex gasping in delight.
"Oh! Do a twirl!" She twirls with a giggle. Reggie joins in, excited.
 "Do the worm!"
Just as she's about to go on the floor, she falters. One, because she can't do the worm. Two, cause she's wearing a dress and no shorts underneath. Sending him an exasperated look, her gaze falls on the third boy who's remained silent all throughout.
This week is spirit week for the LF Arts seniors, today being Decade Day. Obviously, Julie chose to go for the nineties. Not only does she have a lot of clothes from that era in her closet, but it's a nice homage to her beloved band members. It's a simple look. A flowy, floral dress, fishnets, Dr. Martens, layered necklaces and a bit more eyeliner than usual. Her hair, for once, is allowed to be as messy as possible.
 And Luke? He is speechless.
"Uh," he stammers, a smile twitching between a grimace and a full on beam. It's as if he has no clue how to act anymore. In the end, he sticks his thumb up, eyes dopey and wide.
Awkward, Julie focuses back on Alex and Reg. "Okay then... so? Approved? It's 90s?"
"Hella nineties," Reg confirms, Alex smiling at her in that knowing way. She locks eyes with him, peering. He shakes his head and hums in agreement with the bassist.
"You look great, Julie." She lets it go. "Thanks. Then I'm off!" Casting one more look at Luke and hiding her disappointment - why didn't he compliment her? - she leaves for school.
Right as she's at the garden gate, Luke poofs right in front of her. Had she not been used to it, she would've screamed. Instead, a brow quirks up. "
You look rad," he blurts. "Like, really fucking dope. Like, girls I would-" He freezes, red tinging his cheekbones and then saluting at her, disappearing once more.
--
"Girls you would what?" she asks at the end of the day, during a songwriting lull. She doesn't need to explain, a soft smile playing on his lips as he tracks her outfit again. "
Girls I'd like in high school."
 "Oh."
"Yeah." His eyes avert, scribbling an annotation in his songbook. "Don't sweat it. Kinda digging the 2020 aesthetic too."
Her smile widens, giddy, cause Luke has a million ways to say he likes her and she loves each one of them. Instead of calling him out for it, she nods and hums and places her head on his shoulder.
 "Let's try that bridge again."
--
A week later, they're digging through some of his clothes. Julie promised that she would slip some of it in the laundry for them even if they don't sweat -- just for the gesture of it all.
But as they go through garbage bags, she comes across a starchy white shirt with neon orange letters across the front: NIRVANA.
"Luke, did you know you had this? This one is so cool!"
She's too busy turning the shirt over to glance at the dark purple SUBPOP RECORDS logo on the back to notice how quiet Luke is. He's just staring at the shirt - for what reason, she doesn't know.
"That one was from Bobby," he explains, voice suddenly quiet. Instantly, Julie drops the shirt to her lap and tries to gauge how upsetting the reveal is to him. It strikes her with guilt. "That's probably why it's here. I wore it around here all the time and left it here when I spent the nights just as much."
What does she say to that?
"I'm sorry," is all she can offer. But he still shoots her a smile.
"Don't be. It's sick. You should keep it."
 "But it's-"
"Anything that's mine is yours, Jules." He nods his head towards the bathroom in the back. "Go try it on. I wanna see it."
Swapping her crop top for the vintage tee, she admires the cool way it drapes across her body in the grimy bathroom mirror.
The fact that Luke wore it a lot causes a thrill in her chest. Is this... him giving her his clothes? Like a boyfriend would? Or is she reading into things?
She probably is. Don't overthink, she emphasises.
A smile blooms on her cheeks and marches back into the studio. She stretches her arms. "What do you think? It's cute, right?!"
His smile softens, warmth glimmering behind the green. Slowly, he nods and walks towards her. "We don't tuck it in though," he mumbles, pulling at the fabric by her waist and letting it hang loose. "We all had to pretend we didn't care."
Laughing, she stays in place and hopes the red on her cheekbones isn't visible.
 "Right. Looking sloppy."
"Looking cool," he bounces back. When he finishes the tugging, he doesn't move away either.
Even though she had done her best not to short-circuit when Luke's fingers lightly grasped the fabric at her waist and started tugging on it -- the current situation was not helping. Because now, he was just standing close, clutching onto the t-shirt like it's anchoring him to her orbit, and she's desperate to press his hands into the curve of her waist.
"Fine," she relents, a little breathless. "Looking cool."
Glancing down, it's apparent how far the material hangs from her body.
"But do I even need pants for this? Shorts, maybe, but it's more of a dress on me."
His eyes quickly flicker down to her jean-clad legs, but then back to her. "It's yours now. Whatever you want."
It doesn't take her long to dart back to the bathroom to try out the new style.
Yeah, Luke's kinda losing his shit, but he also kinda doesn't mind.
The shirt was nostalgic, but didn't hold any sentimental value. So sure, Julie could have it. Oranges and purples and whites looked good on her anyway.
Every colour looked good on her.
She's been saying she wanted some more grunge in her wardrobe too. He was doing her a favour.
A minor detail he forgot about was that Julie was, well, drop fucking dead gorgeous. If it looked nice on him back in 1995, it looked amazing on her now.
The fabric was well-worn (by him - he let her wear his t-shirt. God, he really didn't think this through) and hung on her body in that effortlessly cool way. His stupid feet had to bring him closer though. Had to thumb the fabric by her waist and feel the heat of her skin as he readjusted the tee. He could almost imagine her parading down the corridor; boots pounding on the linoleum tiles, music blaring from her headphones, fingerless gloves on her hands.
That t-shirt, loose or knotted up or bleached. She'd probably be the hottest girl in school. And then he stayed, cause of course he stayed, and let himself smile in ways that should be dangerous, and let her smile in ways that should get her in trouble. She said something about the length of the top and he replied something non-committal in return.
He realised his mistake a minute later when she appeared again - - - without her jeans.
Oh.
It was long enough as a dress.
Oh. Fucking oh.
His smile stuck, though it held a nervous edge. "Looking good, Jules."
"Thanks," she grinned. "I think I'll wear it to school tomorrow."
Head rolling back to the ceiling, he withheld a sigh. Yup. Hottest girl at school.

A Quick Announcement: The Vampire Reggie AU, Bad Breakups, and “Vampire Anon”
Tumblr media
Hey, everybody! I’m Lydia, thessalonike on AO3, author of a lot of fics for this fandom, including the Vampire Reggie AU, “kill your heroes (and then kill them again)”.
If you don’t mind, I’m going to get a little personal for a second. What follows is a description of mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts/actions, toxic relationships, and cyberbullying. All of that stuff is under the cut, if you want to proceed. It’s not my style to be public about this, but I’ve been given no choice.
This isn’t a callout post, but it is a warning.
Basically, the Vampire Reggie AU is going in a different direction.
I never intended it to get this long. Certainly not to turn into my longest fic — an AU I’ve put a lot of time, effort, and care into. You could even say love. I do love this fic — and I loved the enthusiasm someone in my life had for it. We met over this fic, actually; they engaged me in a whole friendship, based around talking about the fic (anyone remember “Vampire Anon”?); and eventually, as we got to know each other, it turned into a romantic relationship.
Does that sound a little weird to you? Yeah, maybe it was. There were times I even joked the girl was only dating me for my fics, or wanted to date Vampire Reggie more than me. (It was funny… at the time.) As time went on… this story became less about me, and more about her.
She had a very specific idea for where the Vampire Reggie AU would go: ultimately, she wanted Reggie to lose himself completely, to become a monster and kill Luke and Alex; then Bobby would be forced to kill him, and it would end in a whole bloodbath. Not exactly my style of fic, but… that’s what she wanted. And I cared about this girl. I wanted to make her happy. Sure, I said, I’d write the fic she wanted to read.
It’s funny how people can just… take control of the narrative. She’s good at that.
To be completely, brutally honest: our breakup was rough. I’ve been having a lot of problems in my personal life this past year. The deaths of family members and a turbulent home situation left me depressed and struggling with a lot of emotions, which I’ve used fanfic to cope with. My ex-girlfriend… knew this. She knew I was having a hard time… yet in our breakup, she still felt it was necessary to say extremely triggering things to me. “Your first instinct is always to hurt people; that’s the sort of person you are. You’re a bully. No one wants someone like that in their life.”
(Bear in mind, this was our first fight. I’d gotten angry she’d ghosted me all day after cancelling plans the night before; I said something bitchy out of anger. Once things had calmed down, I took accountability; I recognized I was out of line and had hurt her, apologized, and promised to do better in the future… but, none of this mattered to her. In her eyes, I was a toxic partner. She told me in order to continue our relationship, I needed to change how I get angry — that is, I needed to not react to my anger in any way that’s isn’t “pottery!” or “punching a pillow!”. She didn’t say “abusive” but the implication was strong.)
I had a breakdown that night. It was a long time coming, due to many factors, but… her words really pushed me over the edge. I… tried to kill myself. Failed, thankfully, or I wouldn’t be here! But… yeah, it was a rough time. I wasn’t in a good mental state for a while afterwards, and I’m still not… totally recovered. I am in therapy, I’m getting support from my family and friends, working through it… I’m in a better place now, but it’s been very rough. Things have been… really, really hard.
The day after my breakdown, I reached out to her, asking if we could talk. I also made the mistake of confiding in someone I thought was a friend — who promptly blocked me, and informed my ex what I’d done. My ex’s response to learning I’d tried to hurt myself over her words was to publicly announced to our shared Discord server, full of people who knew us both, that she’d broken up with me, that I was “gone,” and would not be coming back to the server or fandom.
She didn’t ask me if this was okay. She didn’t ask me if it was true. She chose to make our dirty laundry public without my consent, then proceeded to hoard sympathy from people we barely knew. When I tried to contact her over this, she’d already blocked me on all platforms.
I made my own public statement after she announced this without my consent: clarifying that yes, we’d broken up, it was mutual, and no, I wasn’t leaving the fandom.
Since then, I’ve just been trying to keep my head down and just write for the fandom I love, in the community I felt comfortable in. My ex and my former friend have contacted the mods of the server, claiming to be “uncomfortable” with my presence there. I believe My ex has been talking behind my back to other people, possibly even describing very personal details. She claims I’m “harassing her”. Now, I’ve only reached out once since the breakup, asking if she wants to talk. She’s made it clear she does not — by never replying, even when I asked “why are you doing this?”.
She just wants me out of the fandom, out of the space she’s claimed for herself. She’s still active in the community now, on Discord and Tumblr, and she has a right to those spaces. I’m not trying to drive her out. But she thinks she can drive me out?
Yeah. That’s not what’s going to happen here.
The stories I have written for this fandom are mine; the joy the JATP fandom has brought me is real, and not at all soured by her; and I still have a place here, even if certain people want me gone. This is my fic… not hers, not anyone else’s. This is my narrative, and she doesn’t get to take it away.
Sorry to get really personal in the author’s notes here. Ranting to strangers is not my style at all… but I haven’t had the chance to tell my story before, and, seeing as she’s been getting others involved, talking behind my back, and still trying to force me out, I have to set the record straight.
Vampire Reggie will continue (and so will I!). Hang in there, I promise — the ending will be worth it.

'Stupid Cupid, Stop Hitting On Me' by Bluefire510
Juke
Luke, a troublemaker cupid, meets Julie, who is also one of Love HQ's toughest cases to crack.
She claims to have no desire to fall in love.
But Luke is always up for a challenge.
Let's see if he could get Julie to fall for her Perfect Match by next Valentine's Day.... and maybe teach her all about love while he's at it.
*Operation Hashtag Rulie by where_you_go
Reggie/Luke/Julie
“Explain yourselves,” Caleb ground out.
“Uh…it’s not what it looks like?” Reggie tried, wincing.
“Oh really, Reginald? Because it looks like two of my most popular band members from a family-friendly band are fornicating in public!”
-
Julie and Reggie get caught up in a PR misunderstanding that leads to them "dating" for a few months. It's not a big deal, or at least it wouldn't be, if Luke would stop acting so weird.
*Unexpected by Phantom_Lover
Luke is determined to breeze through his senior year and onto mega stardom (which means avoiding school, and Principal Lessa, as much as possible). That is until he's forced to work side-by-side with quiet good-girl, Julie Molina, on the big end-of-the-year talent show. The two struggle to see eye to eye, and meeting the all-important deadline seems impossible until something unexpected happens between them.

Juke, Willex
Julie Molina has always thought it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate.
Unfortunately, she's right.
"Julie, Julie Patterson, I'm a maid here in the governor's household," she bluffs. And she wishes that Luke's name hadn't been the first that she'd come up with, because the long-haired pirate's eyebrows raise immediately.
"Luke got married?" he says, sounding oddly betrayed.
His blonde companion looks equally gutted. "He didn't even tell us."
Piss Off Your Parents (Date Me To Scare Them) by TheNameIsBritney
Willex
Alex Mercer doesn't want to go home for Christmas; but if he has to, he's certainly gonna raise a little hell. Enter: Willie, the cute guy in his history of English class who would be the perfect fake boyfriend candidate.
So if you wanna piss off your parents, date me to scare them, show them you're all grown up. If long hair and tattoos are what attract you, baby then you're in luck.

"Your soulmate must love music just like you do”
Julie is 3 years old, enthusiastically playing a small plastic piano, the first time she sees her string.
It makes sense that music would connect her to her soulmate.

Who Could Deny These Butterflies? by xxPrettyLittleTimeBombxx
Juke
“I know this is going to sound kinda crazy…but, could you maybe pretend to be in love with me for a few minutes?”
When Julie Molina approaches Luke Patterson at a bar and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend, she never expects to find herself in a position where she and Luke have to keep up the ruse for longer than five minutes. Figures that out of all of the strangers she could have approached that night, she’d gone and picked the one guy who just so happens to be in a rock band that’s on the brink of blowing up.
*relight that spark by @ruzek-halstead

julie molina has had nothing but a tough life. after losing both her parents early on, she was left in the care of her step-monster karen and her two step-daughters. while working at her late father's diner, completing household duties and being at karen's beck and call at all hours, julie was well on her way to getting accepted into the college of her dreams and having enough money to move out.
and then one day she received a text message from an unknown number. it started out innocent, crossed wires based on a flyer she put up three years ago.
this is the story of julie molina and her prince charming, and everything in between.

Thirty-two missed calls. Fifty-eight texts waiting. Over one hundred various social media notifications. A deep sense of foreboding took over. Julie swallowed. Slowly, she lifted the phone back to her ear.

After a night out in Vegas, Julie and Luke wake up to find themselves married. Hijinks ensue.

But it had to be today. Julie had this crazy feeling in her stomach. Not nervous butterflies. More like fireflies that were trying to zap her (Do fireflies electrocute people? She should google that). It felt like that moment her parents spoke about all the time. The day they met. And when they first spoke to each other. Her mom always says that an intense zap went through her whole body.
Are you new or nervous? Julie has been waiting a (short)lifetime to hear those words be said to her.
She walked down a few more steps in the auditorium and found a spot. It was one of the few seats left in the room that wasn’t all the way up in the back. She sat down and settled into the uncomfortable, hard, plastic chair and took a deep shaky breath. The prof was nowhere to be seen. But there was a cute boy in the seat next to her. He had sort of long brown hair that was covered with a grey toque. And he was wearing a cut off t-shirt and you could see his very nice arms. Julie’s breathing was still shaky, and his attractiveness wasn’t helping the situation.

Julie finds herself back in 1995 with a chance to stop the boys of Sunset Curve from ever dying at all. But will she be able to find her way home afterwards? Will she want to? Or has Alice really gone down the rabbit hole this time...

Julie and Luke talk about how he was the one who introduced her to rock. Then just fluff, more and more fluff.

After the whirlwind her life has been since the boys showed up it’s not that surprising that Julie would be a little tired. But is it normal that she’s more exhausted than she’s ever been? With Nick acting weird, Alex and Reggie both wrapped up in their own problems and her relationship with Luke still a big question mark, she has her work cut out for her if she’s looking to sit back and relax.
Basically my ideas and speculation about what season 2 might hold, or at least some of the things I would like to see.

Julie hasn't been able to make music after her mother's death. She lives in New York working as an assistant for Luke, working hard to move forward in her career.
Luke finds out he's about to be deported back to Canada. A panicked lie leads them to fake a relationship to get married so he can stay in the country. Despite working together for two years they aren't close but a trip to Alaska to visit Julie's family might change that

Rydia 9-16
Oooh, the angsty ones.  I’m into it.
9. Have they made each other cry?
Absolutely.  Lydia cries pretty easily, especially if she’s already in a bad mood.  There’s been many times where Reggie just didn’t think about his words in a fight, and then suddenly she’s crying, and he has no clue what to do. (She hates this because she wants it to be clear that she’s still mad, and he should absolutely not be comforting her right now.)
As for Reggie, he’s cried about Lydia, but never from something she specifically said or did to him.  It’s more like they have a fight, and loses it a little bit because he thinks it’s going to be the end.
10. Write a ~300 word argument scene for them.
I’ll leave it up for you guys to decide if this is something I came up with on the spot or a scene from something else...
“Lydia, you knew it was going to be like this,” Reggiesnapped, quickly losing his cool. “You knew what we were getting into when Iaccepted the scholarship.”
“Did I, though?” Her voice was level, but her green eyesradiated a level of fury he had never been on the receiving end of. “Becausewhen I moved my entire goddamn life to be with you, I assumed we’d actually betogether.”
“That’s not fair, and you know it.  You know how hard I have to work if I everwant to make it off the bench.”
“Work?” she laughed bitterly. “Is that what you call stayingout drinking until God knows when?”
“With the team,” he asserted. “The guys who I spend ninetypercent of my life with because they can help me get a fucking second ofplaying time.”
She laughed painfully, squeezing her eyes shut.  When she looked back up at him, her eyessparkled with tears. “Okay, I guess I do get it, then.  Playing time matters more than me.  I suppose that’s all I need to know.”Shrugging, she grabbed her keys off the table. “I’ll just head back then, and youcan call me when the season’s over.”
“Lydia, wait,” he said, his voice dropping apologetically. “Pleasedon’t.”
“Why not?” She was crying for real now, her voice shaky. “Iknow that you’re busy, Reg.  I really doget it, but—” She swallowed hard. “But I thought I’d still have a boyfriend.”
“You do, Lyds.” He reached for her, and she took a step back. “Please, stay.  This is my only weekend off until—”
“Until Christmas,” she finished. “Trust me, I know.  It’s just a damn shame that even that wasn’tsacred.  I’m going back, Reggie.  Maybe at Christmas, you’ll remember I’mcoming.”
11. What causes them to fight?
Usually stupid things, like someone leaving clothes on the floor or forgetting to walk the dog.  That, and their terrible jealous streaks when the other’s getting “too close” to someone.
12. Do they have differing political opinions?
Not as much as you might think.  Lydia’s pretty darn liberal, and Reggie gets a heck of a lot more liberal when he’s not living with his parents.
13. Name something they would never do for the other person.
Lydia would never compromise her values, hurt anyone, or try hard drugs.  Reggie won’t give up his dreams, and he absolutely won’t ask for help, even when he really, really needs it.
14. What would be a dealbreaker?
Cheating.  Lydia’s insecure enough around Reggie’s friends, and if he actually did something to confirm her fears, she’d never be able to look at him again. Reggie’s similar.  He’s been with a lot more people, but he’s never committed out of the very fear he’s not good enough.
15. What are traits they dislike in one another?
Lydia can’t stand his optimism sometimes.  Especially when she’s in a bad mood and he’s trying so hard to find a bright side.
Reggie gets annoyed by how closed off she can be.  Although she’s getting better at it, he really wishes she would just admit when something’s wrong.
16. If they broke up, what would be their opinions of each other?
They’d still have a ton of respect for each other.  They’re so different that both of them are pretty shocked they’ve made it this long.  Neither are vindictive people, so it’d probably be a very smooth breakup.

@valiantlyweepingdreamer asked: 9, 10 & 11, please, my friend. 😘
- - -
Okay! So:
9 - What’s a fanwork that made you laugh?
FERRIS WHEEL FIC MY BELOVED. I… never shut up about @julies-butterflies fics, so I’m going to try to pick some by someone else for once 😂 (but also the washing machine one omg) and whichever one she wrote “the idea flies through Reggie’s mind like a bird in a school gymnasium” (I think it was the Caleb murder investigation one? But either way I will never stop thinking about that line and she’s probably so tired of it LOL)
please don’t feed the dragons by firefall – literally just the summary of that took me out. Um… and now I’m realizing that I don’t read very many funny fics, most of my bookmarks are angst! But honestly another fic that made me laugh was my own, Alex Mercer’s Worst Nightmare.
10 - What’s a fanwork that made you cry?
I mean, obviously, We Found Wonderland. That’s actually the first JATP fic I read (and the first… anything I’d read in a while) that made me audibly SOB. And just when I was starting to get over it, @pink-flame dropped Promises Kept, and… yikes 😂
But another one – I also want to try to pick some older or maybe less-known fics for these asks – that made me Emosh™ was Lydia’s fic regenesis! (I am a Lydia stan 4ever)
11 - What’s a fanwork that made you squeal?
and I never saw you coming by @merihn
You’ve got a pizza my heart by @waiting-for-my-hogwarts-letter
3am by @astorytotellyourfriends
some stuff @flynn-taylor wrote in an upcoming Juke fic that we worked on together - but in the anna category, the delicate art of a floral fuck you and she swears the moon doesn’t hang quite as high as it used to!

‘A Flowery Back-And-Forth’- Juke Florist!AU
Tumblr media
Juke AU where Julie’s mom had owned the Petal Pushers Floral Company, now run by her Tía Victoria and she helps by delivering orders on her bike.
Another riff from the Triad Chat Vault. Happy JATP Appreciation Month!
"Alright, I'm on it, Willie!" Julie calls out, slipping the arrangement in her basket, foot primed to pedal-
"Wait!" Willie sidles up to her with a conspiratorial smirk, "Can you do me a teensy weensy favor?"
Her eyes shut, already groaning, "No, no. Willie, no-"
The skater sticks out his bottom lip, pouting, "Please? I'm willing to pay for the 'Julie Molina Special'"
Julie points to the sign hanging in the Petal Pushers shop, "Do you see a 'Julie Molina Special’ or arrangement up there?"
Willie presents her a wad of cash.
She eyes it warily, "You're shelling out so much for this, aren't you?"
"It's Alex," he says, eyes twinkling, "He deserves the best," he elbows her playfully, "Right?"
Shit. Romance isn't dead after all.
And Julie does need the money.
"Okay, fine," she pockets the cash and mounts her bike "One 'Julie Molina' delivery special coming up."
"Yes!" he hugs her from behind, careful not to squash the flowers, "Thank you. He'll appreciate it for sure."
"I'm doing this for you," she rings the bell and starts rolling down the street, "And you better properly introduce me to your boyfriend next time!"
"Here you go, courtesy of your boyfriend,"
"Will do!"
Julie bikes over to the address, not too far from her house.
“He’s in band practice right now, so take the flowers there,” Willie had told her.
She could already hear the music flowing from the garage as she pulls up and parks her bike. Carefully scooping up the bouquet, she knocks on the double doors.
It takes a moment for anyone inside to notice the knocking due to the loud music (which is pretty good from what Julie has heard so far. And she doesn’t really listen to much music anymore).
The guitars and drums are put to a halt. Then a voice calls out.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Petal Pushers Floral Company. I have a delivery for an ‘Alex Mercer’?”
“Cool. Come on in.”
Heeding instruction, she pushes the doors open and walks inside. She spots Alex immediately, by the drums. The blonde raises his hand and Julie comes forward with the large bouquet Willie ordered for him.
"Um..." Julie e starts, rubbing her hands together nervously, "There's more."
"Thanks!" Alex blushes, admiring the rainbow of flowers collected.
“And the card,”
Alex quickly swipes the card, eyeing his bandmates in case either of them would dare to steal it and read it outloud. He reads the note to himself and he blushes even more.
“Happy One Month, Hot Dog,” he recites an excerpt for everyone, to which they all go ‘aww’. Then Alex nods at her, “And you’re Julie, right? Willie tells me all about you. Thanks for coming by.”
“Really no problem. Just doing my job. As a delivery girl and his friend.”
Speaking of friend duties...
Then she looks around the room and shrinks in on herself seeing that she does have an audience, one that she recognizes.
There’s Reggie from her Home Ec class and the other boy, Luke, she thinks, the one she always spots with a guitar case in his hands.
"Um..." she starts, rubbing her hands together nervously, "There's more."
"Oh," Alex says, surprised, "Really?"
"Yeah..."
"I don't know what it is that makes me love you so...I only know I never want to let you go...'" she sings, snapping to the beat, trying hard not to look at anyone else but Alex.
I'm so gonna kill Willie for this...
She clears her throat. And goes for it.
"'Cause you started something, can't you see...That ever since we met you've had a hold on me...”" she starts moving around the space, spinning and dancing like an old-timey singing-gram.
Coming back around, she catches eyes with Luke, and she immediately averts her eyes, turning red.
No, Julie... just keep singing. This would all be over soon. So you won't have to keep embarrassing yourself in front of cute boys...
“It happens to be true.... I only want to be with you!" she finishes on own knee, with jazz hands.
She's met with a round of applause as she stands up, feeling awkward.
"Wow!" Reggie claps, "Your boyfriend got you flowers and a pretty girl to sing you a song."
"That was great," Alex beams at her, "You're really good!"
She blushes, waving off the compliments, "Not really a thing we do at the shop, but Willie insisted."
"What a shame," Luke finally pipes up, his eyes never having left her ever since she walked in, "I bet a lot of people will buy flowers... if they're being delivered like that."
Julie swears she's glowing red like Rudolph at this point, with the way he stares.
Julie walks her bike up to the garage, finding only Luke there playing away on his guitar.
"Thanks..." she mutters shyly, rushing out the door and towards her bike, “Have a good one guys. And you sounded great by the way.”
“We’re Sunset Curve,” Luke shouts after her.
“Tell your friends!” Reggie follows up.
Julie politely waves at them and bikes away, all too keen to continue on with her route and try to put this whole embarrassing moment behind her.
If only Luke Patterson was planning to do the same.
Ever since she made the delivery, the guy would try to flag her attention at school. With a ‘Hey Flower Girl’ and striking up conversation, which throws her off balance.
She tries not to associate with people in the music program as often, not since she left due to... personal reasons. (Flynn is a notable exception)
Julie would be friendly, to Alex and Reggie to an extent as well, (to Alex especially since he is Willie’s boyfriend), but she’s just trying to get by with her busy schedule of school and her job at the flower shop.
She goes to work after school two weeks later and makes her rounds with the deliveries Tía sends her on. Tía only gives her the remaining orders that the trucks couldn’t take, last minute ones that are within riding distance.
(Julie can’t wait until she’s able to get her license and really make a contribution to her family’s business).
She’s just about to call it a night when Tía surprises her with one last minute arrangement. A call made while she was out.
It’s about 6 at this point, getting darker and so she packages the bundle of peonies quickly, puts it in her basket and looks at the address. She rolls her eyes when she reads where it’s going and who it’s for.
She knocks against the door, bearing the small bouquet of peonies, "Ahem?"
It startles the boy and he fumbles with his instrument. He looks up to find her standing there and grins. Soon, the guitar is off his person and he's meeting her at the door.
"Hey," he greets.
"Hi," she smiles, although confused, "Delivery for 'Luke Patterson'?"
The boy glances around the empty space before feigning realization, "Oh! That must be me!"
"Looks like," Julie couldn't help but giggle. She gives him the flowers, their hands making brief contact during the exchange.
"You like peonies?" Luke sniffs the flowers, playing with the paper wrap.
She pulls back, clearing her throat. She wants to ask that question at the forefront of her mind, but she really shouldn’t assume anything about their customers. But she couldn’t help but wonder who the flowers are for.
So she just settles for: "Nice arrangement.”
"They're pretty, yeah,"
He tilts his head, "But are they your favorite?"
Julie purses her lips, "Nope. Not really."
"I swear you give me a peonies kinda vibes,"
"That's a thing?"
Setting down the flowers onto the table, Luke nods, "Oh yeah. Don't you try and guess what kind of flowers people would buy when they come in?"
"Sometimes,"
"But still," he pinches a peony from the bunch and offers it to her and Julie's breath hitches.
"For you,"
She crosses her arms, despite the butterflies. Instead of accepting it, she raises an eyebrow at him.
"I'm not one to take a customer's flowers,"
He shrugs, "Consider it a tip?"
"Why? ‘Cuz you don't have any money?" she jests, making her way down the driveway.
"C'mon, Julie," he calls from the open garage, "Here." he holds out the flower again.
Rolling her eyes, she mounts her bike, "I'm not a peony-kind of girl, remember!"
"I'll figure out what kind of girl you are," he says, almost like a promise.
"Good luck with that!" she shouts back, racing down the driveway and onto the street.
The last thing she sees is him grinning like an idiot in the doorway, tossing aside the peony, and watching her ride off into the evening.
Little does she know that this is only the start of their little flowery back-and-forth...

ok so i was thinking of the promposal idea (I forgot who came up w it but if you know tag them and tell them they have all my love and affection) where nick asks luke to serenade julie and julie thinks Luke is asking her to prom and i started ANOTHER fic but it’s a one-shot and I’m building up the courage to post it but here’s a snippet:
“Luke knew he should’ve said no. In theory it wasn’t hard to say: no. He said it all the time.
“Hey Luke, can you help me out Alex refuses to try the Ferris wheel.”
“I don’t refuse to! I said no after you said it would be romantic to jump and hang on to the safety bar because you saw it in The Notebook.”
“Hotdog, DIDNT you say you wanted romance I’m just trying to-“
“Romance not death! There are enough bury your gays as it is -“
“Yeah, no Willie you’re on your own man.”
Or when Reggie had wanted help fixing his amp in the rain.
“Luke it’s one sec, c’mon! Betsy just needs a quick tune up.”
“Reg, Betsy is going to electrocute you and leave us without a bassist. No!”
“But Betsy loves me! See! It doesn’t even -shoot! Hurt that much!”
Or all the times his mom had asked him to come home early or skip band practice completely. No. See, simple? He’d said it when Bobby asked him to do his homework in exchange for a new guitar strap. Fuck no, if he was doing any homework for a guitar strap it definitely wasn’t about to be AP Calculus and why was Bobby even in AP Cal if Reggie was the math genius?
But no, Nick with his all-American Abercrombie & Fitch charisma had caught him off-guard yesterday. They’d just finished a gig at their garage, well Mr. Molina’s garage but same difference, and were taking a break. He might’ve been looking at Julie a little too intensely when Nick appeared out of nowhere. Watching how her curls had gotten frizzy and clung to the sweat on her cheeks and forehead, and how she had been laughing at something Alex had said. How did she look so pretty covered in sweat? Luke felt gross, he smelled gross, but Julie still smelled like that peach and green tea body spray with glitter that she used before shows. And that’s how Nick found Luke, in a completely vulnerable moment admiring Julie’s wicked beauty which really wasn’t fair of him, and asked him to help serenade Julie as a promposal. And Luke, half stupid on Julie’s laugh, smiled and said “yeah man sure.”
He hadn’t even realized what he’d agreed to until Nick had DMed him on Instagram later on that night thanking him again for the help and giving song ideas. And Luke was so screwed because fuck Nick was genuinely nice and Julie was his friend and sure he lo-liked her but what if she liked Nick? He couldn’t back out now, she deserved an awesome promposal. But fuck, this was going to kill him.” - 🌙

Nights Like This
Luke hated nights like this. These nights where all he wanted to do was write, but nothing came to mind. No melodies rang in his ears. No lyrics whispered in the back of his mind begging to be let out. No "Ba-bums" echoed in his eardrums that would later be turned into a drum pattern for Alex. No. It was all empty; his head. And yet, it wasn't. There were still so many things swimming around like a whirlpool. Everyone around him often joked that he didn't think. And he didn't....most of the time. But, then there were nights like these, when the words and melodies were empty, that gave way for his thoughts to move in to the forefront of his mind.
When he was alive, the remedy was easy: go. That's all he had to do. Go somewhere, anywhere, away from where he currently was. That always seemed to get Luke out of whatever funk he was in. But, now that he's dead, there's only so many places he can go. Sure, he could go walk on the beach or around the darkened streets of L.A., but it just wasn't the same. Not when everything that walked and breathed right through him just reminded him of what he wasn't.
So, that's how he found himself sitting on the porch swing at half-past midnight on the Molina's front stoop, swinging gently, back and forth, to the rhythm of the light Los Angeles breeze, gazing up at the twinkling stars, trying to remember the constellations that his dad taught him when he was 8.
He couldn't remember many of them, the constellations. He only really remembered the Big and Little Dipper, but who didn't? Luke sighed. There were a lot of things he didn't remember when it came to his parents. He was just always so focused on music it was hard for his brain to think of anything else and that included family. Sometimes on nights like this, he wished things had been different. That he had never picked up that stupid guitar in the first place. Because then, he'd remember more about his parents and he wouldn't be...dead. His friends wouldn't be dead. He wouldn't be sitting here, alone--
"Luke?"
Luke sat up at the sound of a voice that was the equivalent of what Luke imagined stardust would sound like and found the source, which was much more magical than stardust ever would be, standing in front of him: Julie, the wicked beauty who should instead be a sleeping beauty.
"Julie? What are you doing up?"
"Couldn't sleep, thought I'd get some fresh air," Julie explained as she walked up the front steps of the porch. Julie didn't have to ask Luke to move in order for him to make room for her on the swing. And without much thought, he shifted so that his back was against the arm rest, his legs laying across the seat and against the back of the swing. Julie smiled and jumped up to the swing, copying Luke's movements so that they weren't quite touching, but were close enough to make Luke's non-existent breath hitch.
"What are you doing out here? Aren't you usually in the studio or roaming the streets or whatever it is you do? Actually, what do you do at night? You guys don't sleep right?" Julie asked. Luke smiled slightly at Julie's curiosity, but swallowed it back at the aching thought of passing all the lifers on the crowded streets.
"I try to write usually. But, everything up here is sounding a lot more like those crickets in cartoons," Luke joked so that Julie wouldn't worry. It seemed to work because Julie sounded a laugh that was music to Luke's ears.
"That's a first," She snorted. Luke shook his head and rolled his eyes.
"Ha, ha, very funny," Luke retorted and turned his attention back to the stars (Which really should be jealous of how bright Julie Molina shined when she laughed, or did anything at all for that matter). Julie must've noticed how quiet Luke was being for she broke the silence.
"Hey, you'd tell me if anything was up, right?" Julie questioned, placing a hand on his knee next to her; Luke froze slightly at the contact, looking down at her fingers he often imagined tracing down his own skin just as she traced the keys on her piano. The touching was still so new and yet--it always felt right.
Like whenever Julie brushed her fingers against his when they were writing, it felt like she was the literal key to his heart. Or when she laid her head on his shoulder when they would watch Friends in her room, it felt like they were puzzle pieces that were lost under the rug for so many years finally coming together.
Luke never really paid much thought to the idea of soulmates before he met Julie. If he did, it was in context to music. Music was always his soulmate, but lately? Lately, he was beginning to think he was wrong.
"What do you mean? I tell you that the sky is up all the time," Luke intercepted. Julie rolled her eyes and took her hand away from his knee in order to place it onto his hand.
"That's not what I meant and you know it. I just--you always tell me that I can tell you anything and I want you to know that it's the same with me. You can tell me anything, Luke. Whatever you have to say, whatever you're feeling? I'm here to listen," Julie explained. If Luke was able to breathe at all, he was pretty sure that he would've forgotten how. His chest felt tight and the place where his heart used to be, the place that always felt and sounded hollow, didn't feel so hollow anymore.
The reason why Luke told Julie, and even Alex and Reggie, that they could tell him anything was, not only because it was entirely true, but because he felt like he didn't have that in his life. He had the guys, yeah, but he didn't ever want to burden them. They already had so much going on in their lives he never wanted to add to that. And his parents....he could yell at them and they wouldn't even listen. To have someone blatantly tell him that they were there for him made him feel things he couldn't describe.
He never was good at that, but with Julie...he could learn to try.
Without even a thought passing by, Luke moved his hand so that it was on top of Julie's, leaned his body forward, and brought her hand up to his lips, placing a lingering kiss onto the back of it.
"Thank you," He whispered against her hand and even though the only light that danced around them was coming from one dimming porch light, Luke caught a hint of a blush on her cheek causing Luke to bite back a smirk as he placed their hands back onto his knees.
They stayed like that, their hands lying on top of one another, the L.A breeze swaying their bodies back and forth gently in the night. And as they sat, talking about everything and nothing all at the same time, their hands staying conjoined the way a lock and key or a puzzle piece seemed, Luke thought that maybe, just maybe, he could get used to nights like this.
