There’s this unskippable Google AI ad on YouTube where this girl consults the robot about how to cancel dinner plans with the people across the table in the most annoying voice (likely because I have seen this ad now and had to listen to her asinine questions 20 times at least) and this ad, right here, speaks to my frustration around AI:

It disincentivizes critical thinking.

I know the ad is a joke and meant to be lighthearted and I’m only this annoyed because it’s unskippable and irritating af, but every time I see it all I can think is “if you can’t manage enough creativity and critical thinking to come up with your own excuse to cancel on your friends, maybe you shouldn’t have those friends.”

I have a relative who is firmly in the ChatGPT camp and, for example, yesterday I was trying to figure out how to compress a video file and was venting to them about it. They sent me back something I didn’t read from ChatGPT. Meanwhile, I looked up a YouTube video and figured out how to do the rest on my own, and getting the file compressed was immensely satisfying. Far more than mindlessly and thoughtlessly consulting the robot.

“It’s just like a YouTube video!” They’d told me.

No, a real person put time and effort into that video. That robot stole their content without their consent, didn’t credit them, and spat it back out. I used to patronizingly refer to ChatGPT as "the magic conch" and now I can barely do that anymore because that metaphor is becoming all-too real.

While I can understand the barriers it lowers—like if you struggle with writing the robot does it for you, or if you need a piece of art and are too poor, you can generate it for free. Mindless, repetitive tasks that eat up creative juices that can just be automated by a robot, too (even though everyone can tell when a response is canned and artificial and no one appreciates talking to a machine).

If you keep consulting ChatGPT for how to articulate what you want to say, or just straight-up having it do the hard work for you, you’re never going to learn. Yes it’s taken me 8 years to reach the quality and skill of writing I have but as another Tumblr post out there said: The time will pass anyway.

I can’t draw to the skill level that I’d like to. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to keep practicing until I get there. I thrive off that sense of accomplishment. There’s no little hit of dopamine from typing in a prompt and clicking a button and I certainly don’t appreciate the final product scalped without consequence from real artists.

Or, like when I had to fire a beta reader for flagrant abuse of AI in her work: I can copy-paste my manuscript into ChatGPT, too. I’d paid her for a human response, not garbage feedback that couldn’t understand what I was writing beyond that there were words on the page. I wanted so badly to ask her why she does a job in a creative field if she's just going to have a robot do all the fun parts? I beta read at a great loss of profit because I enjoy beta reading and it's a fiercely competetive market. Surely if she wanted to scam people, she could have done so in so many other ways. You don't need to know how to pen complex prose in your every day life, but by god, you do need to know how to effectively communicate, contextualize, and argue your perspective and this ridiculous ad joking about cancelling dinner plans sure is funny, until it isn't.

And I know the people who made AI probably did so with the best of intentions but people can be lazy and cheap and we love taking shortcuts to save money and I stand by this: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

So. Yeah. This is a writing advice blog and this post has almost nothing to do with it, but that ad annoys me to no end and I had to say something somewhere about it. Bottom line: Robots were supposed to make the hard jobs, the monotonous jobs, the overcomplicated jobs, the belittling jobs easier, not make us all into pudding-boned Wall-E people. If you want to write, learning is absolutely free - write on the back of your grocery receipts for all I care. If you want to draw, pick up a notebook and pack of pencils from the local dollar store and start drawing.

What you made will always mean more to you than something that didn't cost you time, effort, brain power, or even money to obtain.

Addressing the multi-shipping and probably how confusing that love triangle is(no it isnt a triangle. Its THE LOVE pentagonoctogonexagonurfamilygone)

SO BASICALLY:

Everette and Kikita are meant to have a real complex relationship that can borderline seems like romance(but its just for fun since Everette is a gay homophobic)

BUT then we joked abt how Michael6 was a simp for Kikita, but Kikita having a crush for Everette leading for us to label the “love triangle/angle”.

Then Henry and Conch made their appearances, Henry gay for Everette but Conch gay for Michael making things even more messier to my pure chaotic delight

BUT at first I planned to make Kikita have a crush on Norman for the plot, but I don’t know if I’ll keep it.

BASICALLY:

its a big mess, so there will be lot of ambiguous relationship between Kikita and Everette/Michael. Maybe I’ll show who will be the official ship yet?

That is not my conch shell, but it is a conch shell that I am a groupie of — I am in the conch shell fanclub, one might say, rather than being the conch itself (idk what lives inside conch shells but i assume its a conch)

Hullo! Welcome to Conch's ask blog!! This is a blog for my LOTF oc, so here's some things about him!

His name is Conch (obviously) but at the moment he doesn't have a last name or a nickname. But feel free to give him an nickname! As long as its not anything weird :)

He's a pretty reserved, quiet, and at times immature. He's also a pretty smart person when it comes to certain things, but he is slow at picking up on new/unfamiliar things. He can also be blunt at times. However, further into him being on the island, he's grown curious of everything around him and likes exploring with the different types of plants and flowers.

A little known fact is that he's Romanian, with that, he has a strong Romanian accent. He also was born in Romania, but moved to the UK when he was five. However he was picked on a lot in school, which is the reason why he's grown to not trust anyone. Like even someone saying "trust me" makes him hate them even more.

He's also albino!!

Conch also hates the conch shell on the island because finds it annoying and hard to keep up with. With that he also hates Ralph and piggy, and pretty much everyone. He likes being left alone and to do his own thing without anyone on his tail about it.

Later on- he does joins Jack's group in pure spite of Ralph. However he barely does anything, he doesn't really go hunting as much and pretty much explores the island and climbs the tree's and takes naps. He loves taking naps... Cough cough me too cough cough... But, he wasn't there when Simon was killed (he was sleeping) but he was there when piggy died.

Bonus: the only real friend he has on the island is my other oc, Mango. Which they had a strong bond, but Mango was killed by an unknown person (who later was Jack and his group) and Conch fully believed that Ralph killed him because of Conch not being there when Mango was killed, and him believing that Ralph hated Mango this whole time and had this plan about it. (Which wasn't true obviously.) He was basically going through the stages of grief and taking it out on Ralph.

…Okay that might’ve been a little rude, but come on! All of these kids….They need someone to look after them! I’ve given up on some of them….ugh…I learned their names so far at least! There’s the choir kids: Jack, Roger- which are the two that are uh…..not being nice to that fat kid, his nickname is Piggy, but I asked him what his real name is and he said “Peter” so I’m going to use that when I talk about him. Anyways, continuing: Maurice is a little goofball…I think he’s either trying too hard to be cool or is the “funny” kid at school. I like Simon, although his little….”faints” scare the heck out of me. He’s nice though…much more than the others. They’re loud. I feel bad for him….There’s also Henry, which is a littlun, he left the cry- I mean Percival alone with Maurice. I think there’s….Robert? Wilfred? Can’t really remember the rest of the choir….Anyways… there’s Ralph! The boys tried to make me leader but I said no, so they had a vote and Ralph won. Ralph’s….interesting. He tries his best, I’ll admit. It’s annoying when he blows that conch though…The sound hurts my ears. Pigg- I mean Peter, he’s a very nice kid! He’s a tad annoying but he does it for the right reasons. The others don’t understand him…They make fun of him and his “ass-mar”. How rude.

Oh yeah I forgot about the “sin” teenagers! I met all of them properly this time- earlier, “Sloth” kinda….fell out of a tree in front of me- Anyways….He’s….a nice fellow. Lust keeps on trying to run around….completely naked. He’s…definitely queer in both definitions. Wrath’s a little….intimidating so…I don’t think I’m going to try and talk to him much yet…Pride and Greed are both extremely rude so definitely not befriending them. Envy seems like Simon, very quiet and soft spoken….Maybe I’ll try and talk to him more? Oh and then there’s Gluttony! He’s um….always hungry! Hopefully he doesn’t eat all the food on the island…Maybe I can like, plant seeds from the berries here and grow more of them? Berries grow quickly, right? I mean….we won’t be on this island that long, will we? Haha….sorry I tend to ramble when I get nervous. I mean- Ah…forget it. Maybe Envy will understand if I try to talk to him…

Yep! I have an industrial piercing and a helix piercing in my left ear, two lobe piercings in both my ears, both my nostrils are pierced, and I used to have a septum piercing, but I took it out when I started law school and I'm planning on getting a second helix piercing and a conch piercing soon. I miss my septum so much, but I'm doing this thing where I try to get professionals to respect me.

This is a lot of pressure for me. Maybe ambitious? Thoughtful? Curious? That's what I'm going with, ambitious, thoughtful, and curious.
