how did you first get into ancient rome? you've been putting SO MANY really cool comics and posts about it all over my dash that i'm like, i need to get more into this, but it just feels like there's so much stuff that i don't know where to start (ignore my copy of spqr that's been sitting my shelf for the last year 😭)

Thank you for asking! So, I've always been mildly interested in Ancient Rome and Greece, and then was looking for a new language to learn a couple of years ago, and started playing with Latin on Duolingo (which is actually terrible, not recommended at all...) and got completely hooked in spite of the limitations of Duolingo! Then went through various Latin courses until I found the wonderful Satura Lanx (highly recommended if you want to learn Latin), meanwhile getting deeper and deeper into Roman history, especially the late Roman Republic (think Marius through Octavian).

SPQR is very much a classic, but it actually didn't quite click for me for some unfathomable reason - I am loving Mary Beard's Emperor of Rome right now... I enjoyed Tom Holland's trilogy (Rubicon, Dynasty, Pax), though I would recommend it only as a starting point because it is fairly superficial and has a tendency to interpret statements from ancient historians as facts... I loved Mike Duncan's The Storm Before the Storm, about Marius and Sulla - it might be a good start? Anthony Everitt's Cicero was also very clear and informative. And honestly, I am absolutely loving the primary sources (I will talk your ear off about Sallust's Bellum Catilinae), though granted I am finally at the level where I can read them in Latin :D

If you are more into podcasts, I have thoroughly enjoyed Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series on Rome (disclaimer - he is not a historian, and he is very much into military history, fortunately, so am I): Punic Nightmares, as well as Death Throes of the Republic. Mike Duncan has The History of Rome podcast, which is quite highly regarded, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it.

For historical fiction, I would recommend Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa, which is a mystery novel series set in the late Republic that openly addresses slavery, has non-heterosexual characters, etc. Catilina's Riddle is especially good because I am clearly biased and I loved his take on Catilina. A lot of people enjoy Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series, but it felt too drawn out for me.

Honestly, though, the most important part is to explore and have fun! History, literature, primary sources, fiction, Tumblr community, it is all part of enriching ourselves, finding new inspiration, connecting with people, and often, creating new art... and always feel free to throw me random Roman ideas! Or, perhaps you'd feel like joining the tiny fandom and writing some fics? :D (The fandom would be blessed by your talent!) Enjoy! <3

It took me a little while nonnie, but I got this for ya. I also wanted it to be the last thing for October, closing the month on a soft note. So here you go, Nanami atercare.

Nanami x Reader. 990 words. implied NSFW, so please still no minors. otherwise, just fluff

"Is the water warm enough for you, love?" Nanami's voice fills the empty bathroom, being met with only a muffled hum as an answer. he watches you getting comfortable on his chest, eyes closed as you sit in the bath, back resting against him. it's peaceful, and it's good to see you relaxed, even if he can still see the purple marks he left on your body peeking from under the water.

Nanami feels a bit bad whenever this happens, whenever he loses control after a particularly bad day at his job. he knows you let him do it, let him use your body for relief, do as he please with you. you could use the safe word, and you haven't yet, but he still feels bad - worried that he might have actually hurt you. so when the deed is done, and you are left exhausted, bruised and leaking his cum, he always makes sure to take care of you.

His hands are gentle the moment he touches you again, giving soft caresses to your face and wiping away any tears or cum that may be staining your skin. Nanami is always good with aftercare, always loving and tender, but it's doubly so on the nights he is rougher. he apologizes in whispers against your lips before even checking the damage, he doesn't care if he has actually hurt you or not, he needs to get the apologies out anyway.

He only leaves for a minute, and only to get the bath ready - turning on the warm water and lighting your favorite scented candle. when Nanami comes back you are already more aware, but he still doesn't let you set foot on the floor. just as he won't for the rest of the night. he carries you to the bathroom, strong arms lifting you up with ease. the sweet, comforting smell of the candle meets you, and soon enough you are enveloped by the warmth of the water.

Nanami doesn't enter the bath at first, he always asks you if he can. you always say yes, but he still asks anyway, on one hand, you never know on the other, he wants to hear your voice just to make sure you are ok. when you invite him, he finds a space behind you, enveloping your body between his legs and holding you close to his chest. most of the time the water is too hot for him, but it doesn't matter, so long as you feel comfortable.

Gently he washes you, large hands tending to each part of your body, carefully scrubbing your skin, lacing his fingers with yours when he reaches your hands. there is no rush, Nanami kisses your neck and face, whispering sweet nothings and soft praises in your ear as he cleans you. the deep sound of his voice fills the space around you as he murmurs against your skin - "You were so good to me, love. Took me so well, I couldn't ask for someone better. Let me take care of you now, alright." if you want him to, he'll wash your hair, massaging your scalp with the tips of his fingers as he praises the beauty of your locks. Nanami pretty much worships your body through the bath, and he thinks you deserve nothing less than that.

He only gets you both out of the water when you feel like it, letting you soak for as long as you want. once again, your feet never touch the floor, Nanami dries himself off before wrapping you in the soft towel and carrying you to the bed without as much as a huff. he sets you down and gently dries the water off of your skin with a spare towel, kissing along your arms and legs as he makes his way up.

When you are dry, Nanami rubs lotion on your skin, and that's the moment when he takes in the damage he has done, being careful around any bruises and scratches, peppering them with gentle apologetic kisses every time. he won't apologize again, not right now, and not with words at least. there is nothing he can show with words that he can't show a hundred times better with his actions. if you let him, he massages your sore muscles, large hands carefully working to release any tension and pain. he likes the sounds you make, the moans of relief and the mumbles of praise and thanks - he should be the one to thank you, but he lets you say whatever you feel like.

By this point you are generally more talkative, feeling less tired and more in tune with the world around you. he likes to engage in conversation, anything will do so long as Nanami can hear your voice, make you smile, hear you giggling at anything or nothing at all. those sounds are healing for his soul, bringing home the certainty that he hadn't pushed you past your limit yet - that everything would be fine.

Nanami will bring ice for your bruises if they are too bad, make sure to clean up any scratch that could look too ugly. he will apologize if anything hurts too much, and then bring back water for you to drink and anything you may want to eat. if you ask him to order food he will, just name your desire, even if he has to drive and get it himself that's not too much to ask. he will give you an entire candle lit dinner if that is what you fancy, no such thing as too much for the woman he loves. though, more often than not, by the end of it you'll just be calling his name. calling for him to come and cuddle with you, so you can talk about anything and nothing until you fall asleep in his arms, Nanami's voice whispering in your ear being the last thing you hear - "I love you."

Re: wizarding population iirc Rowling stated the wizarding population of the uk is about 3000 which is insanely low to sustain an economy never mind a whole government. I think she also said the population of hogwarts is 300 which would mean 10% of the population is age 11-18. I know she’s bad at math but these numbers are absurd, so like…do whatever

Yeah, I found quote about 3000 wizards. I also found quote where she suggests there's 1000 students in Hogwarts (lmao), but alongside those there was occasionally mentioned "statement of Rowling" about 1:10 ten ratio, which I, now, am beginning to suspect is fake.

But thank you for writing in! I am planning to make a list of all ways you can deduce or adjust wizarding population based on information given to us in books and films. (For example, you might want to state that Hogwarts isn't the only wizarding school in Great Britain or recalculate GB population based on amount of students in Hogwarts)

Oh my goodness do I have THOUGHTS.

First, let me say that I have never been on the Link x Jo train. I’ve been pretty sure that the show was heading in that direction since Link and Amelia fell apart but I have been hoping desperately that they would change course. I always liked Link and Jo as best friends. They have such a good history and they always worked wonderfully as best friends and nothing more and honestly, I don’t think they’re all that healthy romantically.

So with that being said, I knew as soon as the Sam Sutton storyline was teased that it was going to serve as the final push for Jo and Link, but I was really hoping it wouldn’t be. I loved Sam, even though we didn’t get to see all that much of him. I think he would have been really good for Jo, and I thought their dynamic was really fun and refreshing.

Even worse is that Sam was Link’s patient, and Link was arguably a bad doctor to him all because he was jealous? That’s a level of insecurity that I just cannot get behind. Link is a selfish person, in ways that I think are detrimental to his interpersonal relationships, but it’s never really affected his ability to do his job before. This was a really bad look on him and to be honest, I’m appalled at his behavior.

Also, it’s so ugly to me that Jo and Link we’re out there making out in the rain while he was literally dying. That’s horrific, and I can’t even put the blame on Jo because that was Link’s patient. Link was the one that should have been there.

This is getting a little rambly so I’m gonna end it here. The tl:dr is that I’m wildly disappointed with the entire storyline. I think it was unnecessary and dissatisfying and I’m so sad we won’t be seeing more of Sam. I’m really not looking forward to seeing even more Jo x Link and I’m honestly mostly just focusing on the interns for the time being because their storylines have been way more interesting.

Why no RPG characters exactly?

I have 0 experience with RPGs and thought there would be enough characters I don't know anything about in the bracket without adding to their number

But, I've decided for this tourney to let participants decide when I can so if the majority wishes to include them, I'm flexible (not on MCYT characters, though, the line between real/fictional being to thin for my taste here)

If you want, you can start submitting them and I just won't count them if the 'no' option here wins but I'll let the submissions open for at the very least three weeks anyway if you'd rather wait for the final results

🐎 I broke my leg and ruptured my ACL in a fall from a horse 2 years ago, and after surgery and a tonne of rehab, it’s still not normal. I really want to ride again, but part of me is terrified of doing all that damage again.

👶 I was born in one state, but moved when I was 10 months old. Since then I have lived in several different states, and even though I’ve been where I am for now for more than 20 years, I still don’t consider myself a local.
